Preface

After reading a lot of positive reviews on these cameras i decided to go with them. I have the 1080p camera system with 8 cameras. After planning out the placement of the camera it was just a matter running wires and hooking things up to the dvr. The software is fairly straightforward i didn't have any problems setting it up. I haven't had a chance to set up the internet connectivity yet though. The picture quality is great and daytime video is awesome. I can read license plates across the street. The night vision part of them is ok. Outside lighting really effects quality. It could be from camera placement as well. It looks like some of the ir light might be reflecting back to the camera from the walls or eve's. They seem to work better the darker the area is and if the camera doesn't have anything really around it. Overall i'm very impressed with this system. The cameras and dvr are great. Setting up remote access and other features is easy due to amcrest having some helpful tutorials online. My biggest complaint is the supplied cables. If you use them, just know signal quality is usable, but degraded. If you use an extension, forget it. You will suffer horrible signal degradation and drop outs. This is a quality system, but the supplied cables are cheap and useless. Do yourself a favor and get a spool of proper rj59. I had to replace all my cables with rj59 and only then did i get the pristine quality that i expected out of this system. -O. Mary

PROS
  • Excellent product. Packaging was superb. It took me a whole day to set up the entire system, most time was spent mounting and feeding the wires to the cameras. Typical. The 1080p hd cameras are very good and the ir night vision is just a bonus. The image quality is really outstanding, especially viewing from an ipad/iphone where you can zoom in. The difference between the sd and hd view option in quite remarkable, and very welcome. The option to view on your iphone while adjusting the cameras to just the right angle, was a nice and made set up quicker. The cables are "thin" enough, that i was actually able to feed them through my window frames (with a little adjustment) and still retain the window seal, rather than snake though the attic. In my situation, it made it a much easier setup but that may not work for everyone. . The only thing i don't like about the system is the 8 bnc connectors are so close together, that it makes it hard to connect all eight, but it can be done and they seat in secure. Bad design, should have left just a little bit more space and it would be ok. But its not something you will be plugging and unplugging all the time, so no big issue. Just make the next one better. . The software is fairly easy to get going but the manual could be written better, (what's new) but at least it covers all aspects of setup. I love the option of attaching an external hard drive to store images or using the cloud rather than the internal hd. . This was exactly the home system i have been looking for, and the monday after i got it all set up, my cameras captured the big wind and rain storm that knock my tomato plants over in my back garden! (see the picture attached, that i took with my iphone in front of the tv screen as i watch the playback). The other picture is the 4 camera view (in hd) from my ipad air. . Aecrest seems to have a winning product here. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.
  • System works great so far easy to hook up, unit is not loud like some people stated, calling into amcrest sometimes takes awhile before they answer, but they are very polite and never rush you off the phone.
CONS
  • The system itself is excellent, however the users manual is almost useless. You need to be knowledgeble of these systems before you can get full use of this system.
  • Video is good the only thing is i can not hear anything and i can not see any port on the receiver to connect any mic in order to hear any sounds.
  • Good camera system, but i'm a little disappointed in some issues. First was an issue regarding password complexity that was eventually fixed with firmware. Second is the fact that motion detection has a long way to go - at least on this system; when night time comes around, the detection is so sensitive to areas not even chosen on the grid. I had to turn all motion detection off. Third is the flimsy wiring at the bnc connectors; multiple cameras have just stopped working to find out that the wire needed to be wiggled on the back. . Finally, is an issue where they put a cheap made-in-china fan in this case that is super loud. The forums say to replace it with a $13 fan on online store - i ordered one today after trying to silence the one that is installed. I expected more for a $1000 8-camera system with 4. 5 stars review. Amcrest should be focusing less on features and more on quality with user comfort in mind. Seriously, the fan issue is just embarrassing.

Love the system, dvr and app. Thought it was a good value since it came with everything necessary all in one kit. Easy to operate and install (although time consuming if you do it right. I. E. Run the cables through the attic, drilling holes to run from attic to dvr. But there was an option to have them installed. ). Major con: expect to shell out (i think in total we had to pay like $75) extra money on other cables. The cables that came in the box are trash. Picture is terrible and jumpy. We bought a 4 pack of their name brand cables (for extra length, that in the end i don't even think was needed, but was a good thing we did) and those are great. Clear and stable picture quality. My husband works a lot. So big projects around the house take. A. Lot. Of. Time. "if a man says he will do something, he will do it. No need to remind him insert exaggerated amount of time . ". Hubs installed 5 cameras the first day (months ago, about a month after we got the system) only one was with the provided cables, thank goodness! but of course it's the one for the front door. So he will have to rewire that one, one day. We now have 7 of the 8 installed plus still need to rewire the one with the cheap cable (we tried all the other ones in the box and the connection with the same disappointment) and had to order another 4 pack of their brand cables. I just don't get it. It is the same company's cables but the ones provided are garbage. Still 4 stars because the system itself is awesome. But expect to pay more for their working cables.

Click to see NoticeAmcrest Hd Analog 16 Channel Megapixel Smartphone (amdv4m16)"I received the shipment in good time. It was packaged appropriately and was undamaged. All parts and good bits are there. I scanned through the quick start guide. It will help. I spent more time looking at the user manual. This is 200 pages of detailed specifications, tips, instructions, and all around deep geek goodness. The quick start guide would be all that i (or anyone) need to set up a generic system with all cameras in place and some customization to suit my property and security needs. A one size fits all solution that would be good enough no doubt in 80% or more cases. I'm not going generic. That user guide (and youtube for sure) will enable the customization of this system so that it will fit like a bespoke saville row suit. I made this purchase based off of weeks of online research across many websites. I've also spent many hours going through the reviews to identify the dogs that i don't want as well as problem trends. And there was one very well written and detailed review about an amcrest system that i'm going to go find and give tribute to. It was persuasive in leading me to this purchase. This system is a good enough, better than a lot, well thought out system that can be quickly put into operation. It also has the flexibility to be customized to fit. And hey, i didn't receive s* in the way of a discount or freebies or even much in the way of a thank you for buying this system. I've got to look into how everyone seems to be getting free swag to evaluate. Some of these people are not so literate. Anyway, so if something is shoddy, cheap, stupid, not working, or just irritating about this thing i'm going to call it out. Likewise if things work as designed and the whole thing comes together like its supposed to, i'll sing some praises here. And anything odd or noteworthy in the build i'll document so that i might help others. The first thing i really like is that user manual. We are going to spend some quality time together. Updates to come on an unpredictable but fairly rapid timeline."

(0) Question: How is the night vision? clear or grainy? any examples?

(1) Question: Can i mount the "bullet" camera on the ceiling or it has to be on the wall?

(2) Question: Can you change the internal hd to a wd purple 6tb surveillance hard disk drive?

Purple Surveillance Hard Disk Drive (Western Digital) FAQ.

I got this to increase my recording capacity for my directv dvr hr44/500 along with the anker usb 3. 0 & esata to sata external hard drive docking station the install was a breeze, just slide the wd purple hard drive into the anker or the docking station of your choosing, connect the esata cable from the anker/docking station to the directv dvr esata port (make sure dvr is turned off by unplugging it), turn on the anker/docking station, then plug in and turn on the directv dvr. You'll see the dvr find then format the new drive and you're all set. If you have any issues after you restart the dvr just press the small red button (reset button) located behind the small door on the front right side of the dvr hr44/500 where the access card slides in. This should fix any issues you may have so try this first before trying any thing else. Now enjoy the extra storage capacity. Why do it this way instead of buying a standard external hard drive? most external hard drives are not designed to run for long periods of time but the wd purple drives are designed to run 24/7 and it also handles video and multiple streams of video better than the standard external hard drives. With recording multiple movies/shows at a time and hours of recording and playback this setup will last a lot longer than the standard external drives. If you read the reviews for external drives that are being used with dvr's you'll find a good many of the bad reviews complain about failures occurring within the first year. After a lot of research for something that was dependable and verified to work with my directv hr44/500 dvr i found this setup on several online forums along with numerous recommendation for the western digital red and purple hard drives. Just keep a couple of thing in mind. First when you press the power off button on your dvr you just put it into standby so recording and guide updates can be done. That's why you need to unplug the dvr or you can run into issues. I do recommend using the reset button after you install and format the drive just to make sure everything is working as it should. Also the internal dvr hard drive can not be seen or used while you have the external drive connected to the dvr. The internal hard drive content does not get deleted when you install an external hard drive. To switch from the external drive to the internal drive you need to unplug the dvr, turn off the external drive, then restart the dvr. Now you can watch whatever you may have on the internal drive. Keep in mind anything you record will record on the internal drive until you switch back to the external drive. This setup is not just an economical alternative for a standard external hard drive but it's far better than any standard esata external hard drive you could buy in this price range. One other tip i learned is the only thing that seems to fail on the docking stations is the power button. Many recommended to unplug the docking station instead of using the power button. I have mine plugged into a battery backup with surge and it also regulates output to a consistent 120 volts so i'm not worried about causing any issues by unplugging and then plugging it back in rather than using the power button. You could use a power strip and turn off the power strip instead of using the power button/switch on your docking station. -Notice from B. Shawna, Minnesota

First of all, i knew from the start that i was going to buy a wd drive. Of my past 30 consumer grade hard drives, all of my wd drives lasted until i decided to take them out of service for larger drives. This compared to the two hitachi and two seagate drives that either developed bad sectors or component level failures. . It was really a toss up between wd red and wd purple for me. I wanted to try the new drive out and have been pleased thus far. One key factors in my choice to purchase this drive was that it supported tler. I don't currently have it in a raid, but i didn't want to limit myself. . Gary e peterson said it best in his wd red review explaining tler, "time limited error recovery - where the hard drive assumes it is part of an array, assumes there is redundancy, and is not afraid to quickly tell the host controller that it just can't complete the current i/o request. ". . Both wd red and purple have tler. They both have 3 year warranty. Red has a listed mtbf of 1, 000, 000 hours and purple is not listed. Purple is rated for 300, 000 load/unload cycles vs red's 600, 000 cycles. Purple edges out red in noise, 26 dba vs 28 dba while seeking. . This drive is very new to the market and my drive bay. :-) i will update my review after a while of using the hard drive.

- R. MathisI have this in a dvr connected to four surveillance cameras. They aren't hd cameras so using this hard drive gets me over a month of storage before having to make room for new recordings. . I previously used a couple old hard drives i had laying around. They both starting having lots of problems before too long, like losing recordings because i had to reformat the drive over and over again. That led me to searching for a drive made specifically for constant use. I've had this for about six months and so far no problems whatsoever.

I purchased this drive to supplement my amcrest nvr and 4 camera setup. The drive installed in perfect condition and was simple to install. The packaging was retail quality and i've had the drive recording my cctv setup for the past 3 weeks with absolutely no issues. The drive seems to keep up with all of my camera feeds and playback is as good as i had hoped. I would definitely recommend this disk drive to anyone installing their own cctv system.

Purple Surveillance Hard Disk Drive (Western Digital) FAQ.

This is an excellent plug and play product for a video security camera system. The only thing i wish they supplied are the mounting screws. Most systems with an optional hard drive do not supply mounting screws. Either way, excellent product. -Notice from T. Sheila, Rochdale

So far so good. I got this hardrive for my blue iris security cam system. Ive had no problems or and video glitches. . *update*. I found an issue writing directly to the drive from the cameras. The files are 100% fragmented and cause glitches in recording as the drive fills up. Im not sure i would blame the drive though. My solution was to get a small 128 gb ssd to use for the "new" folder in blue iris, then set the "storage" folder to the wd drive. Since i have done this i have not had any more issues.

- F. EvelynDrive is well packaged, part number ordered matches that on the drive, and it's "smart" codes are consistent with a new and non-defective drive. . I only wish the original device i purchased had a "purple-class" drive, as this is my usage. But, that doesn't reflect this purchase, which is very positive.

This item came package extremely well to protect it from the rigors of shipping. The price was adequate for the quality and specifications, and shipping was pretty haste. So far it is working flawlessly. Installed in a surveillance system for 24hr recording and it plugged right up and worked immediately.

- X. ImeldaI purchased this drive to go with my new netgear centria n900 dual band gigabit wireless router with 3. 5" storage bay (wndr4700). I have this set up as an internal wireless lan at my home and store all my video and music content on this drive. With the n900 wireless this does for me more than any dvr out there can since i can access it from any device in my house including my desktop. Great combination. My plan is to add in a couple wireless surveillance cameras to the setup in the near future, and i expect it to continue to work just as good for that purpose as it does for my multimedia streaming.

I now have two of these drives, and have had zero issues with either of them. I use them in a nvr, which is what they are made for, and they do the job. My total storage is now 6tb, and that holds a lot of 1920x1080 video, i can go back weeks or months, as i have my cameras set to record motion only.

WD Purple 6TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 128MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD60PURZ

It is a surveillance drive for nvr applications. I am assuming that anyone who knows the difference will understand this & the different build construction of different drives. . It is quiet, no obvious noise, i have it running in an amcrest brand nvr which it fit perfectly, screw holes lined up well, the cable connectors fit perfectly. I cannot measure the temperature during operation, but the nvr does not run hot or even warm, so that is a good sign to me. . Longevity - it has not been running for very long, but the wd specs give an expected life (mean measured value, i assume) so i expect it to meet the mean life expectancy. Anything past that is a bonus. . Use it for surveillance & it is fine, these are typically important pieces of stored data, but not normally mission critical, if they are, they you are probably an it expert & you know what to do to back them up anyway (i am not an expert, i just have enough knowledge to be dangerous :-). ). . Overall i have had good luck with different wd drives over the years & i expect no less from this one. . I did not get paid, reimbursed, of given anything for free (never do as i am not important enough online! ) so you are getting my own unbiased, honest opinion & nothing but that. :-)

Capacity:6tb style:new generation surveillance hdd wd purple drives are built for 24/7, always-on, high-definition security systems. With a supported workload rate1 of up to 180 tb/yr. Using all frame 4k technology, wd purple drives improve ata streaming to help reduce errors, pixilation, and video interruptions that could happen in a video recorder system. 1workload rate is defined as the amount of user data transferred to or from the hard drive. Workload rate is annualized (tb transferred (8760/recorded power-on hours)). Workload rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.

Purple Surveillance Hard Disk Drive (Western Digital) FAQ.

I needed to upgrade my tivo hard drive and after doing some research i decided on a survelillance drive as it is made for large video files and is made for fairly continuous operation. With 3tb of space i don't have to worry about shows being deleted. I can save all episodes of futurama and other favorites. Drive seems quiet and after a couple of months, i have had zero issues. So far so good. -Notice from G. Jarvis, Prince Edward Island

It took a lot of web searches to untangle the vague marketing from wd and find out what allframe technology really means. In a nutshell, the hard drive firmware on this drive will prioritize the timeliness of video streams instead of trying to make sure that the data is absolutely correct (which can lead to long pauses and dropped video frames). . The idea is that it would be better to have a bit of imperfection in the data (the video stream) rather than the whole image dropping out for a moment. This is accomplished through the "ata streaming command set. ". . The slow 5400 rpm rotation means that this purple drive is very quiet (this is its best feature, if you're using it for a home theater system and need a super quiet environment) and it generates less heat than a 7200 rpm drive in continuous operation. . The wd purple nv drive is almost identical except it has a few more enterprise level features such as vibration control and a more durable outer case, and support for double the number of video streams (64) through the ata command set. . I also highly recommend a raid 10 configuration with a good adaptec (or other reputable brand) raid controller card to ensure that you can write the video streams to the hard drive fast enough when you have multiple surveillance cameras and/or high definition resolution streams.

- C. AprilWorks perfect . Put this in expandable system firstrend 8ch 1080p wireless nvr system with 4pcs 1080p hd security camera, p2p wireless security camera system for indoor and out. Works perfect ! no problems at all. If you do happen to get this security system they do support up to 6gb hard drive ( which wd does have at a great price ! )

I use both the wd purple 2tb and 3tb hard drives in several different security systems and believe they are one of the best surveillance system hard drives available from any manufacturer. The wd purple 1tb is an excellent choice for security systems with a dvr of 960h resolution in either 4 or 8 channel dvr systems. I use the 2tb for ahd/dvr/nvr security systems with sata ii (maximum hd capacity allowed is 2tb) hard drive systems for 720p or 1080p resolutions with 8 camera channels. I use the 3tb for sata iii systems with 16 channels for 720p or 1080p cameras. The wd purple drives are reasonably priced from online store and should provide a long and trouble free service life for critical security systems. With any cctv security system, the hard drive is one of the most critical system parts and must provide dependable service (this is one part you do not want to scrimp on or depend of the typical computer type hard drive). Highly recommended!

Needed these for installation of security system. The included 60 ft cords were adequate for most of the job but these were a welcome addition for where they didn't suffice. Great product and fast delivery.

- I. WilliamsGreat cable system. Bought these to replace another set that broke when installing. Can see no difference in video quality when using the original 50 foot cable or these. Actually, i had to join two of these together, and even at 300 feet can see no difference.

Used these with my ezviz system and they are working great.

The F.A.Q. for amcrest ultrahd 4mp hd-analog 16ch video security dvr digital recorder, 16-channel 4 megapixel 15fps, hd analog, hard drive & cameras not included, remote smartphone access amdv4m16

Bought the four camera 1080p system with the dome cameras. I turned everything on and made sure it all worked with no issues. Then i paid an electrician to run the wires to the four cameras. For the record it cost me $1200 in case you're wondering but it looks professional and no wires anywhere. Ran the dvr into the master bedroom and it's done. The dvr does have a fan noise, about the sound of an older pc cooling fan. Not terribly annoying but definitely notable. . I was most worried about configuring remote access. Turns out i found an amcrest video on setting up the p2p for remote viewing on my phone. With a three minute video i was up an online viewing from an android and an ipad in about five minutes. I was really worried i'd have to get into static ip etc. Etc. Stuff but i guess i didn't need to. . I was trying to be cheap and bought the four camera system, i think the ideal set up would have been buying an 8 camera dvr with four cameras that gives you expanding ability later, but i'm fine for now.

A number of questions have been asked here.

This is the best camera system when it comes to image quality and software. These guys have really put work into making a reliable product. A few things:. . - the software is the best i've seen so far. I've used many surveillance systems and of all, amcrest is the most reliable. The playback functionality is the best i've seen so far. I am able to download clips very quickly, and unlike other surveillance systems, the clips i download are actually playable. - the image quality was better than i expected. When i first installed it, there was some latency when watching live video, but this went away after tweaking a few settings. There's also no latency when watching over mobile app.

Great system pictures are super clear. But you end up ordering the all in one cords your going to get lines in the picture use the double siamese cords the system comes with or if you need longer like i did go through online store and look for him and make sure that they are the double siamese cords produced by amcrest. Other than that i have nothing but great things to say about the system i did spend however almost two months doing my research on multiple surveillance systems and ended up choosing this one because of the quality and overall rating and reviews of this product

At full resolution you will only get 11 days of 24 hour coverage. I wish it was more but we need to see every detail. But, the clarity of this camera video system is incredible. Cameras 12 feet away and we can still zoom in on a license plate. We can zoom in to see a serial number on a $20. 00 bill. The quality is very good. It's like watching tv. I have purchased two of these. And plan to purchase many more for our other businesses to replace our older systems. I did purchase my first one directly from their website, cause it was a little cheaper with the coupon code they send with the email newsletter. I have purchased 5 different brands of camera systems over the years, this is the only one we love.

. Medina, New Jersey

I started out the security camera endeavor by buying 5 wireless ip cameras from amcrest and trying to hook them all via a separate ethernet switch. This was a month long annoyance with constant connection dropouts, having to reboot several cameras multiple times a week, sometimes multiple times a day, having to install 2 separate apps to control them (view pro and amcrest cloud), the hilariously bad compatibility between those 2 apps (cloud will overwrite the view pro settings you spent an hour setting up). . After one camera finally stopped working i said screw it and returned all of them for an all-wired dvr camera system. The experience could not be more night and day. The dvr hooked up incredibly easily by comparison, all the cameras fired right up without any hassle, the setup-wizard was a breeze, and setting it all up in the app was as easy as you could want. The only complaint i have is that the view pro app is not as clean-looking as the cloud app. While the cloud app is awful in so many different ways, the user interface was nice and streamlined and going to a specific video was easy, as well as saving that video. With view pro, not so much. You can get there, but it's not as easy. Having said that, the amount of customization is really great, even if they don't tell you what any of the items do (would it kill you, amcrest, to have hover-tips like every other piece of software ever? ). The video quality is great, and i'm especially happy with the night time video. The ir leds work great and really light up quite a large area (pictures included). Full disclosure, the 2 driveway pictures i included have 2 small ir blasters supplimenting the camera ir lights, but they're pretty tiny. In the truck picture, one is shining on the mailbox. In the front door picture, one is shining on the front door. The back porch picture is only using the camera ir. . As for the hardware, definitely can't complain. The video looks great, the cameras seem well-built and sturdy (with the exception of the terrible screws they give you, i used my own for the install), and the dvr itself has a lot of great functionality and io. I did not encounter the loud fan issue that many seem to notice. This is placed in a spare room that does not get used so it wouldn't have mattered anyway, but during setup i did not notice that the unit was any louder than a laptop at normal operation. Maybe they fixed it, or maybe i'm just going def, who knows. The included cording is fantastic, the two 50'ers were enough for the garage cameras, and the 100' i used for the back and will be using the other 100' for the back when i get the post in the ground to mount the camera to. . All in all, i'm very glad i didn't give up on amcrest and ordered a wired, dvred camera system. Don't waste your money on wireless cameras, it's not worth the hassle. For all the money i spent trying to get those stupid wireless cameras working and then buying ethernet cable when the wireless kept failing, i could have bought 1. 5 of these dvr camera systems and saved myself an enormous amount of hassle.

. Powell, Indiana says

The interface is really weird, but once you get the settings all sorted, this is a really fantastic setup. The quality is perfect. Viewing the cameras on my laptop is super convenient. The mobile app isn't the best of quality, but i love how quick and easy it is to check if anyone is home. . Just a few days after setting it up, it caught someone coming into our yard and siphoning gas out of our trucks. The video was good enough to identify the man and now he is jail.

A. Glenda, South Carolina

Camera quality is top notch. Setup for remote view is quick and painless. Highly recommend!

. Alexia, Darlington says

The main reason why i bought the amcrest video security system is due to its continuous video recording (cvr) feature. As the owner of arlo security system, i am very frustrated that arlo doesn't start recording for about 2-3 seconds after someone walks by and by the time it starts recording, the person is gone from view. It makes the arlo camera pretty much useless since it takes that long to detect motion and record. The af-2mbc-varib, bullet camera is my answer. It has a solid feel right out of the box. There s a thick metal housing, with an all-metal mount. The joint system that has a ball and socket adjuster that makes repositioning the camera simple. It s waterproof and weatherproof with ip66 certification. So it can stand up to whatever elements mother nature throws at it heat, humidity, rain, snow and freezing temperatures. What i like most is its excellent image quality. The camera is 2 mp, with a resolution of up to 1920x 1080p with built in motion detection, an up-to 90-degree viewing angle. The quality of the images is well sustained even in lower light, thanks to backlight compensation and infrared illumination that kicks in automatically as needed. The reason why this camera has good night vision exposure adjustment is due to led placement and a true ir cut filter. There are no strong hot spots interfering with night vision. I compared its video quality with slightly cheaper model annke c11db camera. This amcrest definitely outperforms every aspect of annke camera, which tends to have rainbow effect picked up at certain lighting conditions (see photo). Since all i want is a camera with high quality images, even in low light, and something sturdy that s going to stand up to rain, snow, and other adverse weather conditions, at a very affordable price point, the amcrest bullet camera is a great choice for me.

. Eleanor, Wandsworth

I originally purchased the 960h set. I hooked one of the cameras to the dvr and couldn't read a licence plate from 10 feet directly behind the vehicle. I promptly returned that system and bought the 1080p hdcvi system. I work as a building engineer and have a lot of experience with cctv systems and let me tell you, the 1080p system is worth every penny! very crisp hd video. I was worried that the video would be over compressed when viewing from my phone and it is great. The default view on the mobile app is sd, which shows a pretty decent, uninterrupted video. When you switch to hd, it is just that, great hd video, however, the video is a little choppy at times but not so much as to make it unusable. Installing this system properly can be a chore depending on your application but the peace of mind you get with a wired system vs the potential risks associated with wireless systems makes it worth the work. The cameras that came with the 1080p system were much more robust, and the ir led's were bigger as well, giving me a much better night vision over the 960h system. Overall, for the price, i don't think you could find a better system.

V. Dorothy, Washington says

Good camera. Clear picture. I tried a bunch of other dome cameras and returned them all and bought another one of these.

K. Meredith, Dorset

I am an electrician that often installs security systems and recently found this brand, so i put a 1080p system to the test on my latest installation. Most of my customers prefer to have a closed circuit system with no internet communications enabled, so i will have a somewhat different perspective than most other reviewers. . Pros:. 1) the picture quality for the 1080p system is phenomenal. I try to talk most people into getting the best picture quality for the money. I have found that most users who opt for the inexpensive units are generally unhappy with the picture quality once they go through the time & effort. Both my recent customer and myself were very impressed with amcrest, and ite quality for the money since most if not all of the cheaper systems are inadequate, and in my experience most customers are not very happy was a bit of a shock seeing the night vision quality practically look like it was daytime at midnight (given enough ambient light, otherwise it is black&white in full infrared mode). 2) installation is basically all about strategic camera placement & adjustments and running cables, but it is basically all plug and play after that. I would highly recommend using the quick start guide as well as enabling the navigation bar, then it's pretty easy to get things going from there. 3) packaging is well done and there is little doubt the items would get to you in good working condition barring any packaging damage along the way. Everything looks and feels like it is solidly built with some heft to it. 4) no wi-fi functions to bother with. Yes, this is a pro because wi-fi generally has poor picture quality and has to be one of the most insecure communications technologies available, but you can always look for a different system with wireless if you want someone to hack your system and see what you see. You also run this risk by enabling internet communications, but not as much as with wi-fi. . Cons:. 1) the manual is a poorly written chinese translation into english and very choppy with little coherence. If you are a programmer it might be ok, but setting advanced parameters will likely prove frustrating and time consuming to most. If you use the quick start guide more and rely on calling customer service to walk you through any issues, the manual issue can largely be negated. 2) there are some bugs and glitches in the software when using advanced functions such as motion detection and alarms. I tend to use these functions little if at all, and i usually keep it closed circuit by not connecting anything to the internet, but again this issue can largely be negated by contacting customer service, and keeping it simple. . Overall i'm very impressed with this system for the money and will continue recommending it until something better comes along. Most of the consumer oriented or diy style kits like this still have issues, especially with the software, and there will be some major advancements in this style of technology over the next year or two that will hopefully work out most of the bugs, but without resorting to spending thousands on a professional system, i think it's a great value that will continue to impress. . Update: for those who find the ventilation fan operation to be too loud, it can easily be upgraded with one of these. There is also a cpu fan, but the ventilation fan replacement usually handles most of the noise complaints and takes about 15-20 minutes if you are a handy type. Update 3/18: there have indeed been some major improvements in the last few years. During my latest installation a few months ago i noticed that the ventilation fan operating voltage had changed to 12vdc instead of the former 5vdc and now runs much quieter out of the box, so i no longer have to default to changing it. Amcrest has also upgraded their manuals and other documentation, and there are plenty of good tutorial videos as well as an expanded product line, even though i still usually don't bother with motion detection & alarms and the 1080p system remains an overall favorite. All in all, it seems the folks at amcrest are still at the top of their game as of this writing.

. Colleen, Midi-Pyrenees says

Bought this system after our neighborhood had two break-in's in one month. I had reviewed several different brands and amcrest seemed to have the best rating with great customer service and support. Everything was easy to setup. Install wasn't too difficult. The most time consuming part was running the cables in the attic and porch overhang. Also purchased 4 square ip65 waterproof box for protecting the cable connections an mounting the camera. Chose the white bullet cameras to blend in with the siding and be less obvious. May have been overkill but i'm definitely satisfied after it is all said and done with. I have had this up and running now for about a month. I utilize the mobile app to view the camera when i'm away. Image quality is awesome and span of view is great. Definitely would recommend this product!

W. Ruff, Derbyshire

We have this system in two of our restaurants. Never fails! we have a lorex system in another restaurant, which constantly goes out on us and we're forced to reset it to get it going again. With so much going on in running a business, it's nice to have something we never have to worry about - it just works! when we need to capture video evidence of an incident, the video is in amazing quality. I have to hand it to them for making the remote viewing setup of the system as painless as humanly possible - a preschooler with a smartphone could do it! well done amcrest, keep it up!

J. Lara, Colorado says

We installed this system at our former home in wv after some rural neighborhood disturbances. I found it easy to set-up and understand. After several months of operation, i concluded that higher than 2mp cameras would be better for those positions with a view of the street, or longer distances across the yard. However, we sold the house before i could upgrade any cameras. . We connected the system to our wireless network, and could use our phones/ipads to view the grounds while we were gone. I used the computer app, as well as the direct dvr controls. I found there was a bit of a mismatch between the various control modes (mobile, pc or dvr) in terms of setting up the motion zones for recording, alerts, etc. The pc version seems to imply the greatest resolution of how the zones could be set-up, while the dvr controls were less resolution (larger blocks across the screen). . When we sold the house i returned the system to the default settings so the new owner could set up as his own. However, he later reported that the default administrator log-in no longer worked. So he would have to call amcrest to get more expert support.

F. Aldana, Illinois says

Received my amcrest camera system today, and just finished a test hookup and did the initial dvr setup. . Setup was intuitive, all cameras are working perfectly, and lightsensor/night leds turn on as they should. . Will update review when i get system mounted properly and start using it, but for now it is a 5/5 for me :d. . Followup:. . So i finally got all the cables routed in the attic, and 3 out of 4 cameras installed (the fourth is going where there is a hornets nest at the moment. ). . So far this system beats every surveillance ive encountered in my many years as a store employee, the pc based ones have been slow and resource hungry, this just works. Boots straigt to cam view no trouble. . Setup was a breeze. Followed the initial setup first time and checked 'do not show' second time as all settings are available whenever you want. . First thing i tried after hookup was the lan or wan connection through browser which also worked immediately. But after toying with the remote web access settings, namely changing port from 80 to xxxxx i could not get in via lan afterwards. Found out i had to add the new port number to lan ip too, so 192. 168. 1. 64:xxxxx and then it connected again like a charm. . Playback directly on dvr is flawless, but when playing back on web interface i have not found out how to move cursor on all 4 cams at the same time, each cam has its own slider and they get out of sync. Probably just a user error ; ). . I spend alot of time in my basement where both computer room and home theater is located, and look forward to having that extra watch over what happens outside meanwhile. Im also having 3 weeks vacation in a few weeks, and it will be liberating to not run to the window to look for the dhl van every 15 minutes :). . This sytem comes highly recommended, (only downside is that i wish they had offered 8 ch dvr with only 4 cams so that i could expand in the future as i dont need 8 cameras, and that bundle was almost 2x the price :( )

I am writing this review to dispel the notion that this system is too complex to set up. I actually purchased this back in march and i just got around to setting it up yesterday. I simply pulled everything out of the box, connected the power supply to the dvr and to the cameras, connected the cameras to the dvr, connected the dvr to my router (internet) with cat5 cable, and i connected the dvr to a computer monitor. The first thing i noticed was a helpful start up 'wizard' that automatically appeared on the monitor. That process took about 5 minutes to complete. Then i noticed that the cameras were all showing on the monitor. (i did this in my living room. ) then i downloaded the amcrest view pro apps on my smart phone and ipad. I clicked on "add a device", and then 'p2p'. It asked for my amcrest password (that i set up on the wizard), and then it asked me to scan (using the app) the qr code that is on a sticker on top of the dvr. All of a sudden i could see what the cameras were looking at on my devices (phone and ipad). It was that easy. The whole thing took 15 minutes. My initial impression is that this is a quality system with a lot of complex capabilities. Now that i have everything working i'm going to look at the manual (which i downloaded on my ipad because the little manual that came with the system was difficult to read) and learn all of the complexities. Of course i also have to hang the cameras in their permanent location. The cooling fan in the dvr is a little loud (and i did purchase the recommended replacement fan), but i'm going to install this system in an upstairs closet so i don't think it will matter. I'll connect the system to the internet using a wifi 'bridge' or 'extender'. I'll update this review once i've installed the cameras in their permanent locations (i'll use my phone or ipad to 'sight' them in), but i'm thinking that this is going to be an awesome surveillance system, and i'm excited to permanently install it. Now i wish i hadn't procrastinated so long. I guess i had been intimidated by all of the reviews that to me implied that you had to be a computer engineer to get the thing up and running. Trust me, if i can do it, you can too.

The best part of this setup is getting the app to work on your mobile phone - just scan the qrcode and you are up and running - just worked with michael on the support team and we have resolved the issue of accessing the cameras on a wan. Only works in mozilla firefox but they are working on a fix for edge and chrome. Michael has the steps to insure web installation is successful. Couple of issues - the bullets are harder to mount because of the mounting swivel - you have to be careful to see what you are looking at to make sure you have a great angle to look at. The domes are much easier to set the viewing area but you have to caulk the 3 other holes that your wire is not using - i'm rural and the yellow jackets found the holes and made mud nests in the holder of my old cameras. Easy setup - great picture from the cameras and excellent night vision - also you can zoom on the cameras in the phone app by spreading your fingers - very cool.

I've read other accounts of why home video surveillance was a great idea, then we found out first hand. Today's home receives a much higher number of deliveries than homes of the not so distant past. Interestingly, it was one of our overnight surveillance videos that enabled the police to identify and correct an unwanted visitor and his nightly rounds of "activity". The only thing i can add to this review is the advice others have given. Four channels are good. Eight channels are better. We debated getting white cameras (to help them blend with our white trim), but the plainly visible camera where packages are delivered offers a bit of a deterrent for any who might find the packages attractive objects of desire. . A bit about customer support: although the information on line and information included in the box were a bit lacking in clarity, the people of amcrest (chat, email, and telephone) are all dedicated to helping you get your system up and running and helping keep it running. We had a small issue with our system about 7 months into the set up, and they were very fast in helping us to correct the issue. Response times to emails are very fast. Each person at amcrest seems personally invested in maintaining their very good name. From set up, to product questions, to expansion or even product issues, the people of amcrest work very hard to make sure every customer is satisfied. . Best images, even at night that i've seen. Certainly a bit of a challenge to set up, but once you figure it out, it has excellent image quality. Great capture of activity day and night. Works well an a variety of weather conditions. The night vision was the most impressive for us. The images are clear, and the infrared lights for the night vision images have a surprisingly good field of view/distance range. Excellent memory capacity. Great recording features. The night time photos have had the license plate blocked out because the image quality was so good, we actually had to block it out of the photo. My snapshot camera does not photograph video screens very well, so please understand these are for illustration purposes to get an idea of the quality of the night vision cameras. There is one color shot in the bottom left of the "night" photo, because the system is so sensitive, it continued to pick up the "blue" sky after the sun had set.

One of the main reasons i have held off from purchasing a home camera system was the belief it would be difficult to install and setup for mobile viewing. So, after some painstaking research i ended up with this system - and i'm glad i did. . What i liked:. 1. The entire set-up is very "plug and play" and was seamless. 2. There are videos online to review to learn how to set-up the system. 3. Everything worked (knock wood) the first time. 4. The camera connections are simple and cables are identified clearly. 5. The remote/mobile setup was shockingly simple and worked well the very first time. . What i would recommend to others:. 1. Be prepared to dedicate at least 1/2 a day to running cables. I figured this and besides a good workout in the attic, all is well. 2. You will need a drill and large drill bit to run the cables, as well as some type of "snake" guide. 3. Spend some time in advance thinking about where you will put the cameras and dvr first and before you do anything else. . My complaint:. 1. This is minor and was mentioned by others, the dvr fan is loud! i'm going to purchase the other fan and try to install and see if that helps. . I would highly recommend!

1080p motion detection is excellent contrary to many of the reviews i've read. When i first installed the camera the motion detection was garbage, it recorded about 22 hours out of the day but i changed the sensitivity and threshold, set up multiple zones per camera and it is working perfectly. If you look at my first picture, you can see the distance between the yellow lines (recordings from motion detection) are spaced out. For those who are having problems with the motion detection you need to read the manual and configure your cameras! . Video quality is an 8/10. The cameras are very clear but i cannot read any of the license plates on cars that go by my house. This was disappointing but besides that i have no complaints. The picture is very sharp and clear (don't settle for 720p cameras you will be unsatisfied! ). Wiring this system was the most difficult part of all. We own a large home and 3 of the cable runs were pretty long. Approx 130ft (bought a different cable), 80ft and 60ft. It took me 7 hours to run the wires correctly(hiding them so the only exposed wire is to the dvr). I knew what i was getting into though, if you buy a wireless system chances are you will run into connectivity problems. I worked in home automation for about a year and all of our wireless systems would have issues. We would never get called back after installing wired systems though. It takes a lot longer to set up but they are better and more reliable. The network configuration for remote viewing was pretty easy, as was modifying the settings/zones for the camera. You will need to reference the manual to configure your cameras! i cannot emphasize that enough. I work in it and have experience setting this stuff up but each system has its own software. They differ system to system. If you have any issues configuring the cameras give their tech support a call, i've read from other reviews they are helpful. Lastly, the phone/web apps. Here is the main reason i bought this system. Amcrest has top notch remote viewing. The only issue i've seen is their phone app lacks playback(doesn't work for my wife and i) but really playback should be limited to your internal home network anyways. With that said i'd rate their apps at a 9. 5/10, the only flaw is the playback issue. . Overall i rate this system a 9/10, it is hard to beat imo. You'd have to spend a lot more money to beat the quality of this system. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I like this (8 camera 1080p w/dvr) security system as the video quality is awesome and ease of install was a breeze. My only complaints are the software takes some getting use to figuring out how it works, having to use the included mouse to login into the dvr (which makes the remote basically useless as you can't access the alphabet on it), and lastly the app tends to crash a lot. With the app i wish it had a logout feature, in order to not have to complete a full setup feature on the app, when it crashes then i wouldn't have to delete it and install again with the setup of the dvr access again. I think they've done pretty well with the hardware now they just need to put some more time and money into new software for the dvr and a better app. All in all i'm happy with my purchase and hope amcrest is able in the future to alleviate some of these faults so my system can be better off and new people don't become discruntled with some of these issues.

I started looking for a standalone cctv system after we had a few security cameras installed on the inside of our house (vivint). We really like having the ability to pull up our cameras from our phones anywhere, anytime. So began our hunt for a more in depth system. I, like many other reviewers here, did tons of research on many different types of systems and based on the sheer number of solid reviews and reviewer's images we decided on the amcrest 1080p 8ch tribrid hdcvi. We knew we wanted the highest resolution possible, 8 cameras, infrared, and mobile access capability. This system has it all. Be warned: installation is tedious and can be tricky. By that i mean the running of the bnc cables. I ran mine through the attic which is the best way, in my opinion, to avoid tampering. It will be time consuming, frustrating, sometimes downright painful, but is worth it in the end. Anyone not familiar with a home's construction should certainly hire someone to install this system. On the other hand the setup is super easy. If you don't plan on hiding wires, this system could be set up and running in about 10 minutes if you were to pull it out of the box, plug it in, and quickly run through startup. The user interface is fantastic. It's very responsive with no lag in video feed. Setup of the network setting was easy after i jumped online. Amcrest's channel has some great setup videos that made this process problem free. The quick start guide and the user manual lack pertinent information and can be slightly confusing. ( videos made setup a breeze). The only downside i've found (not that big of a deal really, but worth noting) is that the fan is noticeably louder than i was expecting. Not deafening, but our dvr is in our bedroom and the sound is the first thing we notice when we walk into our room. I read one review that said this part is easily replaceable with an aftermarket cpu fan, but i think we're going to leave this one as is. Again, not a big deal, and wouldn't stop me from purchasing this unit again. So far, this system has been rock solid and has exceeded my expectations in almost every way. (best surveillance picture i've seen). This has absolutely given my wife and i peace of mind and i would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a high resolution home/ office security camera setup but doesn't want to break the bank.

I love this product. I have been researching security system for a while. So glad a purchase this system. I can see my entire property 360 degrees. Night vision is also very good.

*update*. Amcrest themselves are taking care of me and will replace my bad dvr, i am very impressed at how they are going about making sure i am happy! thank you, carlos! . . I bought this in may, to replace 2 720p amcrest dvrs and we put our hard drive and 8 cameras on it. From there, in june we had to start buying cameras and wires because everything started to not work. Right now i have two cameras out after fixing two. Now we get it, it a broken dvr, when you put it on channel 8 it starts making crackling sounds. I called amcrest tech support and you can't even understand them first of all, secondly, they want remote access to my computer which won't fix what appears to be a short in the system. I will not let them access my computer, so they were going to email me a set of instructions, after telling them my email address 3 times i still never got the email. I emailed firstvision technologies yesterday and still have not gotten a response back from them. Not a happy customer, almost 200. 00 + the cost of the new wires and cameras i still don't have a working system.

S. Reed, Lincolnshire says

This is the third one i bought and find them to be reliable and really easy to remote view from. I use all three at the same time to monitor my property. Wait times to talk to technical support have drop to minutes. I just talk to tyler from technical support who did a great job on fixing an issue i was having. I would strongly recommend this system and will continue to buy all my surveillance needs from amcrest.

Y. Wanda, Greenwich

Very nice system. Only complaint was the missing remote in the box but their technical support sent one out. Great quality picture from cameras. Took about 15 hrs to install including pulling wires. Online videos on youtube were a godsend as their manual is pretty critique.

I wanted a no subscription video security system and these had good reviews. I toyed with going wireless, but the idea of changing batteries every (or every other) month sounded like a terrible idea to me, so wired it was. . Pros:. - 1080p - actually pretty good 1080p quality over the wire. - cameras all seem to have great aluminum housing construction - very solid. - online streaming setup takes some networking prowess to get setup, but they have great step by step videos on youtube that help you through the networking and router configuration. Relatively easy to setup in my opinion. - mobile app and web app do work every time i try and use them. - toggle between sd and hd over mobile and web apps so you can use lower bandwidth if you are on a limited plan. . Cons:. - dvr unit it quite big for the little amount of guts inside of it. It would be nice to have a smaller form factor since the logic board inside is less than 5". Nit picky, but that would be my choice. - the fan is loud. It runs at 100% all the time, so if you mount it on your office desk like i did, you will have the pleasure of hearing the whine all the time. - dvr unit gets pretty dang hot. I have it sitting on my office desk and i can feel the heat coming off of it all the time. I'm thinking about putting a static fin cooler on top and a micro quiet fan on the side to see if it helps. - the only web support is firefox. I am a 100% chrome user, so not having the ability to use chrome is a huge negative for me. Browser compatibility should be something they strive to cover, at least the main browsers, like chrome, edge, and safari. Firefox is more of a developer's browser and not everyone uses it. However, i can stream online; i just have to use another browser than my personal preference, so no star detraction. - i did have a defective unit that took a few months to get rmad, but they sent me a refurbished unit and it's been working great ever since. . None of the cons detract from the rating. They are more of not positives or side notes, than cons. . For the price point and features, i am 5/5 happy with it!

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

In hind sight i would go with a poe system for ease of installation. The 1080p is pretty good. Unfortunately the system looses online connectivity from time to time (confirmed it's a system issue) and it randomly restarts with an audible beep that no one seems to understand. The red eyes near the garage at night may be deterring the thief's as we have not had a break in on the vehicles since the installation. So that's a plus. . Update: this pos randomly shuts off and restarts and kumar in who the hell cares can help me no further with the trouble shooting.

. Alberta, Slough

Dead out of box. Amcrest says that they offer support, but even though i contacted them in the middle of the day, the chats kept transferring back and forth between amcrest people who were "off-line". I called and was routed to a support queue. Listened to music for 24 minutes before giving up. There are other companies to buy from - try one of those.

. Palmer, Wigan says

Image quality is pretty good. I've had the system installed for about a week and i've already had one camera go out. Haven't even started the warranty process yet. The software system is terrible. Not user friendly at all. The app to manage the system is terrible as well. I have been around a few other brands that are cheaper and are way easier to manage. If you like messing with settings and options then you would probably like this system. I prefer something a little simpler so i would choose something different next time. That's my 2 cents worth of info.

Really love the product. Would have given it 5 stars. After we had to order a hard drive separate. Which we did not know this product did not come with a hard drive. In which i specifically ordered this one because you did not need an additional hard drive. It was suppose to be included. But, once i ordered the hard drive, the product is excellent, and very easy to set up and use. But be clear. This product does not come with a hard drive. It will not work unless you order one separate, and install it after you receive it. It is really simple to install also. I'm not a tech, and it was super simple. Directions were easy to follow. Its a great buy so far.

N. Carrie, Oldham says

Sux that i didn't know or read (if it's listed) that it only has slot for one hard drive.

I am a well read, semi-electrical geek, and am very self reliant and way better than average mechanically overall. And just framed and prewired the house i built myself to include lots of smart "stuff", which was to include a video camera system outside as a deterrent. . First issue, no remote (with the 4 channel model) as indicated it "may" include. Second, there is zero indication when purchased that you also must have a permanently attached monitor to operate the system. That said, in the vast direction manual, each setup screen stipulates (paraphrasing now) "select the options you wish and click on next". There are about 100 screens, sub screens and such. Few of them are in generally known nomenclature, so i had to look up a few in google what the reference means, and still have no idea what many of the settings are for. So in most cases i left them alone in the factory settings. . Second, aside from the 3 point font in the manual (no, really! ), there is no mention on how to remove the ball camera to access the 4 screw holes from the inside. Had to figure that out (they pop out from underneath, with force, but readily. Then force "pop" back in after the base is installed). As mentioned, i had prewired the house with cat-6, 8-conductor wire, which the customer service folks confirmed would be acceptable instead of coax. I had to buy the bnc and power jacks, male and female, from another source as they are not available from this company. They send a boatload of wire with pre-attached end connections, and assume you're running it freely after the fact. Nope. Additionally, i installed soffit outdoor boxes with the equivalent to a light block to be a decorative termination point for the vinyl soffit at each box. Other devices are in the soffit areas with similar preparation and it really does dress it up. However, there is no option for connecting these to anything other than a solid flat surface with the wire stuck out of a side slot. Visible. Which was not my option. No base extender, base plate option for any soft of junction box, round or otherwise, was available anywhere. . Third, the cameras appear to work well enough. However the ability to have them zoom, pan etc. Is not an option with these cameras, and it would be useful if in the product description it gave an option to upgrade to this or that camera that could do that, offer a base flange, or remote control, monitor inclusion etc. . Lastly, the unit is now in place in a closet, where the router is located (distribution of all cable, ethernet and telco distribution takes place from this closet from in-wall panels, and the camera feed cat-6 is also prewired to a shelf in that closet with separate a/c for that purpose). The monitor is now in place on a wire shelf, allowing ventilation for the box and monitor, and the 2 tb hard drive whines like a child whose halloween candy had just been confiscated! i have 4 pc's and 2 laptops, and none of them make anywhere near that much noise. I can't imagine it lasting very long with the friction that is causing the noise, as whatever is causing that noise must self destruct sooner than later. . Note that setting the system up on your pc, setup on your android or ios smartphone and frankly the setup on an internal network will most likely require you go to the company youtube link found in the amcrest setup disk. But even with that it took 2 phone calls to get it right on the android so it was viewable live when needed. . The moral to this story, i gave the unit 3 stars because it functions well, reacts well to motion and works well in low light. The camera resolution is very good, the overall installation of the cameras themselves is not complicated once you figure out the orientation of the lens ball must have the little green led perfectly plumb to the ground (or your image will be skewed). So with overall product, support data and advertising aside, it's good. What remains to be seen is the longevity of the hard drive with the racket it's causing on it's own. So beware of this. . Good luck, and happy camera installing!

C. Whiteman, New Hampshire says

Originally this was the exact system i wanted. It ended up being a nightmare to use. So complicated and not user friendly at all. Missing settings to change motion detection sensitivity online. Amcrestview says the device is office. The app is a joke to use. No option to flip video for cameras installed on ceiling. What a waste of time. Getting a refund. My $100 system from zmodo at work was 100x simpler.

. Lorenz, Bremen

I had this system for a little over a year, but actually by the time i got it installed and going, it was operating for less than a year. The dvr was starting to get really hot at times and the system would shut down and reboot. I started to put an external fan on the unit to try to keep it cool, but eventually that would do no good. It turns out that an internal circuit board fried and i asked amcrest for an exchange or if they could repair it and they flat out refused because the one year warranty had run. Out. I'm not happy at all that i spent $500 for something that only lasts one year. All in all, the system was nice, although it wasn't the most user friendly system. My big complaint is with the terrible customer service of the manufacturer.

Q. Nicole, Auvergne says

Much more difficult to get signed into and to operate than it should be. Lighting at night is ok but nowhere near 65 ft out. They should really update that.

X. Cageen, Minnesota

Pro's:. 1) great hd video quality from the camera. . Con's:. 1) noisy dvr. 2) the manual is confusing and difficult to understand. 3) can't figure out how to set up the alarm zones for motion detection. 4) can't figure out how to transfer a saved video clip to anything useful in order to share.

H. Dorine, Haringey says

Do not buy this brand! after 11 months installed the dvr starting rebooting every 3 minutes. Called tech support and they could not fix so they transferred me to another department for a replacement. However, even though i have only had it installed for 11 months, i purchased beyond the one year warranty. Needless to say, they refused replacement and have no one in tech support to fix. They did offer a small discount if i purchased their faulty equipment again. Whoopee! i now have a $1500 worthless security monitoring system.

F. Shirley, Lambeth

Cameras seem fine. Interface is clunky to use. The cables are garbage. The 50ft cables gave slightly grainy images and the 100ft cables gave almost nothing. After a lot of troubleshooting, i ordered custom belden rf cables for my lengths and now have crystal clear video.

. Helen, Maine says

System stopped working after 6 months. It was stuck in a constant restart loop. Contacted amcrest, who suggested that it was most likely from the power supply. The sent a new one out which took over 2 weeks to get and it turned out to be the wrong power supply. After contacting them again they sent the right one out which took another 3 week. We tested it, same problem. Finally after a few emails back and forth they said they would replace it, but we had to send them our unit first. So, what the hell, it's not working any way. We sent it to them and they got it within a week. After confirmation that they did received the bad unit they told us that they are back ordered and we would have to wait. This took another month and a half. Finally back up and running and it has been only 4 months with no issues (fingers crossed). Like i said, it's a good buy if you don't end up in my situation.

B. Smith, California

I purchased this in june 28, 2017. I have not been able to use it at all. I'm now on my 3 dvr as received 10-27-17 and it still does not work. Amcrest have tried to charge me $ 15. 00 to return the defective equipment. Do not buy this unit. Also, the 3rd dvr was a refurbished unit that still does not work. Really, 4 months, and no one from amcrest will call me to help resolve this continued issue.

D. Mable, Rhode Island says

This was my first purchase of a security camera system. Everything was great and was as expected. I would give it a 5-star for hardware alone. Unfortunately, the software is dragging the points down. . Pros:. - everything is living up to the expectations - especially the hardware. The cameras and the dvr system are excellently built. - apps and software come in many different platforms. - picture is very sharp and clear in hd. It is great even when you are viewing it from a phone. - cameras can see far away in night vision. . Cons:. - lots of bugs for software. - everything is as expected; except for the specs you are expecting. - unable to identify model numbers in comparing to the manufacturer's website. That leads unable to update firmware. - very limited online forum supports from manufacturer. - the exhaust fan is loud. The placement of the fan is part of the issue. . I was going to subtract one star from the 5-star max due to software issues. However, as i continued to look into the issues i encountered, i started to discover even more hidden problems among the different software. One more point taken off. Yet, i would still recommend this product to others. This is simply because the issues can vary from one device to another. It is all about each person's luck. . Below are important details you may want to know. . Software/control interfaces - they come in at least five different platforms - android phones, tablets, iphones, dvr ui and browser ui. Each of them is individually developed. Some functions exist on one platform while some do not. Ex: pir function only exist on the android tablet platform. Also, amcrest collects usage data for performance evaluations. The opt out option only exist on the tablet platform. Dvr's ui, android phones and iphones do not have such option to choose. So, i can't tell if amcrest is collecting my usage data or not when i am using my phone. . Let's talk about each ui platform. This can be a turn-off for some people, but it is important for you to learn now. Dvr's ui - the interface is easy to use. It is very straight forward. However, there are many bugs. Some examples include, users are unable to save settings, motion detection can be buggy or not working as intended, some functions are known to have known bugs with no short term plan to fix, etc. Browser's ui - many people have a hard time getting this to work. That is including myself. I had the plugin installed on my window 10 pc. However, the app didn't load on my microsoft edge, chrome and firefox. The proposed solution is not living up-to-date. The app loaded up on my vista pc. However, the cpu usage killed my laptop twice. I had to hard reset my laptop. Therefore, i can't tell you much about my experience on this platform. Android phones', android tablets' and iphones' ui - their operations and ui layouts are very similar. They are way less buggy than the built-in software from dvr. I must say the only drawback is that the ui's are not intuitive enough. Some people find that 3rd party phone apps are more user friendly. My view on the software/control interfaces is that amcrest is trying to satisfy users of different kind. Unfortunately, it lacks the focus on making each platform great. Let's be fair. This applies to almost all hardware companies. . Let's talk about specs, model numbers and firmware. I decided to find the latest firmware for my dvr and my cameras. So, i looked at the packaging box and compare them to the manufacturer's website. Well, for my dvr, the model number was not found. Strangely enough, the device itself had a different model number. For my cameras, the model numbers shown on the devices do not even match the serial formatting as listed on the website. The packaging box doesn't even mention about camera models other than telling you that you are getting four bullet cameras. People have a hard time guessing which firmware to download. There are no words from the officials in resolving this. On the packaging box, it lists the cameras as ingress protection ip67. After doing a research on my camera models, they are actually ip66. I know a slight change on models and specs won't matter much. However, unable to identify the right firmware is a big issue. Let's assume that firmware is there to patch security issues. . Now, for the exhaust fan most people are talking about. Yes, the original fan is loud. Therefore, i changed mine with a new fan. The new fan was absolutely quiet. That was until i put it into the dvr. What i noticed was that the fan is not directly sticking to the case; there was a gap between the fan and the case. That pretty much amplified the air flow noises much like how a whistle works. If the original fan was directly mounted onto the case, the noises wouldn't be a huge problem. . With many of the negatives i mentioned above, i would still recommend others in buying this. You just have to hope that you get less bugs than most others. Otherwise, the devices themselves work very nicely. After knowing and jumping all these hoops, i am happy with what i am using now. . Good luck!

Camera's for this system tend to die after only 1 year, being waterproof or weather proof may not be as accurate as stated. Also when system reboots it makes a very loud sound as if the entire system exploded? other than that it serves it's purpose

W. Rhonda, Ile-de-France says

Horrible camera. Does not work as tvi. Incorrect description, only black and white output, no osd, no utc. Waste of time.

G. Mary, Surrey

Terrible! the software that came with this is the biggest piece of junk. The hardware is awesome. The camera are really good and the quality of the image is fantastic but the box and the software is total junk, and doesnt work most of the time.

P. Fabian, Sutton says

I bought this same system about 3 years ago, worked as expected, and then died. I tried replacing the hard drive thinking that may be the cause, but it still did not work so i replaced the complete dvr (unit reusing the old hard drive). Oddly these systems are sold without hard drives. Anyway the hard drive install was easy and the system fired right up. Jared at amcrest support helped me redo the remote viewing options on my iphone. He did a good job with this support request. . My only functional critique is to make playback search easier. It's a unix based system, so it takes some effort to search for and replay previously recorded events on your cameras. Otherwise the unit works as expected with the advantages associated with hard wired systems.

Y. Guest, Birmingham

Excellent quality and easy to use! edit: after a few weeks, two of the cameras started to have major malfunctions and the box restarts about 10-30 times a day. The only reason this keeps 3 stars is because of the ease of use software and the easiness of setting up and the quality for the price.

1080p hdcvi 4 channel dvr. Pretty nice quality. Easy install. I could easily give 4 or 5 stars but clarity is not what i expected for a hd 2. 1 mp security system. Picture is about the same as hooking your tv to an antenna and getting a non hd channel. Night vision is about 3 stars as well. Good enough to recognize someone or to get make model of vehicles at distance but not tag s further than 45-60'during daytime (non movers) one note. If you are plugging into your hd tv and do not get a picture you need a lower res tv/ monitor to obtain a view of the menu. Then go in and change resolution output to 1980.

This amcrest dvr works but there are some things to make me deduct two stars. First off there is a a bad solder joint or something that makes it make a whining sound unless i apply some slight downward pressure on one of the video input bnc connections, does not seem to matter which one. The cooling fans are rather loud and always on, no temperature switch to turn them on as needed. . The last and for me the most negative item is the android app that amcrest supplies to view this dvr requires access to way too much information on my phone. Why on earth does a dvr viewing app need to know my identity, media files, access to the camera, microphone and device id and call information? ! ? on top of that the app sucks battery all day long no matter if i have the app shut down or not. Makes me think that, combined with the permissions it demands, that amcrest is spying on it's customers. Completely unacceptable for me. In fact i am seriously considering returning this dvr because of the spying app. . I will say that the app on the pc does in fact work well for me but again i have to wonder if it is not also sending private information to amcrest as it's running on my pc.

Pleased with quality of the camera itself but not the connectors attached to them. They can easily be damaged while installing. Once installed i noticed the ones on the front and back porches worked great at closer distances day or night. (very please). ://: i have one of the other cameras facing a shed witch is about 100 feet from the camera. Good coverage (wide angle) but would not be able to recognize anyone's face or tag numbers in the day. But defiantly be able to to see what they were doing and or what color and type of vechical. On the same camera facing the shed. The night time coverage is a lot lot poorer at night. You would probably see head light pull up or someone walking between the house and shed maybe 30 feet. But unless the shed lights were turned on. You wouldn't get any coverage. But they may have something wrong with that camera because the clarity between them at night is hugh. Hope this helps.

I am writing a "supplemental" review, as i purchased this system last year and have been using it for a little while. The system itself works pretty well, although the setup to make it work on your phone or computer is incredibly difficult. The instructions are for an experienced technician, and the interface is not very easy to use or understand at first. I also want to note that this company does not support free product exchanges in the case of defective products, which i am frustrated with. Out of the 8 cameras, one dome camera has not worked properly, ever. I've been in touch with customer service numerous times with the same problems and finally determined that the camera itself is defective, but when i contacted amcrest direct to replace this defective part, i was charged $15. Amcrest sent me this email:. . Nichole (amcrest)mar 14, 4:30 pm cst. Hi, . We have received your request for replacement and we'd be more than happy to assist you. In order to proceed with a warranty replacement, we require a $15. 00 shipping cost payment. This will cover your shipping costs both ways and we will provide you with a prepaid label. . I think that amcrest should be paying shipping charges to replace their defective parts and am less than happy with the support i've received since purchasing this system. Buyer be ware.

1) very important about selecting camera power/video wires length & quality:. 1) these cameras would turn black video if the wrong length or quality due to its 4 mp high speed data. I have both samsung 4mp and other lower resolution like 2 mp, & 960h camera that work fine on my samsung 4 mp dvr (analog system) using the same wires that didn't worked for these amcrest cameras. Replaced my wires made them working ok. I have good luck with 50 ft in length wires & using wires that have 2 separate wrappers/insulators for the power & video. I think the signal interference & the wiring length were the issues with these cameras. It is too sensitive to noises. . 2) the 4 mp day time video output is only in black & white - no color. I had to purchase 4 mp cameras from other vendors. Their cost is a little more ( $56) but they were ok for 4 mp color day time display.

False advertisement. I didn t even bother to check. I was getting ready to order another camera but i started looking at the pictures of other reviewers and i see they had ordering issues with the hard drive where it says 3tb. I decided to look at my order and i was screwed only 2tb buyers beware!

System works as advertised. Plug the cameras in and they just work. The clarity is good. Night vision is ok - not great. Dvr box fans are noticeably louder indicating a cost reduced or low cost design product for this application. I work in the it industry and recognize good user interface practice when i see it. This system's interface, while simple, is not that intuitive or well explained. If i had to guess, the ui was designed about 12-15 yrs ago. . Without some of the videos, it would have been more difficult. The instruction manual is not well written. It lacks definitions of terms and implications of various settings. For example, the for regions used to alter the alarm triggers on each camera could be explained a lot better. More specifically, you discuss threshold and sensitivity without clearer relation to object sizes and velocity correlated to those settings. You should use a table to describe this. Object, distance from camera, change in position over time and relative settings would be a start. Note to the maker - putting a lot of effort into a clearer well written manual is very important. Overall i like the product, but it has a look and feel that is over a decade old. Would really like to see an upgrade in user experience.

Two of the five i purchased stopped working within 2 weeks of install. Great starter camera for the price, but i am definitely trying other product options in the future.
