Amcrest Ultrahd Video Security System (amdv3m4) 2677

Review for ultrahd video security system

Price was $189.99. It's important to remind anyone reading this review that it's very old and very dated now. Technology changes fast and i have since replaced the entire system (which to be clear, i spent over $500 out of my pocket on . The manufacturer only chipped in for an empty dvr box and 1 working camera). In the 2 years since this review i've also kept up with evolving technology by replacing my phone, tv, home media center, cameras and car . Things change. I left the review because most if it is general useful information which is not specific to amcrest or the model i had. I bought a different brand recently that has a lot of features amcrest is missing, i am definitely not married to their brand which i think is lagging right now. After i've lived with my new system for a while i'll circle back and add some comparisons to this review. . . Before getting in to this review please note that the seller offers several different models at this page, all under the same heading. Therefore some of the reviews you read may be intended for a different model other than the one you are interested in. To be clear, this review is for the model amdv960h4 which is what i ended up with after buying the rest of the components. . A friend recently installed a very similar home video security system that is one of the most popular models being sold at the big membership warehouse club. I was able to compare this one feature-for-feature with that model, which sells for about the same price. Read on to learn what to look for when you are shopping for a video security system. . In a consumer electronics industry where "bigger is better" is being pushed at us all the time, is that the case with a home security system? for example, do you really need hdtv cameras and a 3 tb hard drive? do you want a completely wireless system? which features are "must have" and which are gimmicks? . . Here are a few basics if this is your first video security system. These pointers are intended to help you choose the most basic and important features, you may want or need other options to suit your particular installation:. . 1. Highest resolution - not a necessity, the higher the resolution the more hard disk space it takes and with some systems the more it will cause your smartphone to stutter or freeze. You are not producing a hollywood movie; however you do need enough resolution to be able to identify intruders or license tags. The resolution of the camera sensor is not always an absolute indication of how sharp the picture will be, the optical lens also has a lot to do with it. The amcrest has higher-than-average resolution and good optics. Edit since then camera resolution has taken quantum leaps. By 2017 some security cameras look as good as a good hdtv. What really is worth noting is that they are getting much better at packing more resolution in cameras without taking up immense hard drive space or bandwidth. . 2. Largest hard drive - this one is one of the major fallacies of choosing a security system. For most people a hard drive that records for 30 days is useless on modern systems that alert you immediately of an intrusion. You only need video evidence of an intrusion, not a month's worth of no activity. How will you possibly be able to review a month's worth of footage? even 1 week is too much for most people unless they travel a lot for extended periods and may not be able to "check in" from remote locations. The best choice is to set the system to record only when a camera detects motion and record that for evidence while alerting you via smartphone. Also be aware that if the drive gets full and there has not been an intrusion, it simply goes back and records over the now unnecessary footage. This model amcrest i am reviewing records for 6 days before starting over. Amcrest has models that can record more more. Edit since i wrote this review digital compression technologies have gotten much better so they are able to pack higher resolution and the ability to use more cameras into the same amount of hard drive space. Now in 2017 a good size hard drive to have is between 1tb - 2tb. . 3. Color at night - useless. Most systems can be set to switch to monochrome at dark. Even then don't expect the infrared led's to give you a highly detailed picture beyond about 20'. Be sure you can switch from daylight to night modes, including remotely from your phone. The amcrest cameras give me a view of my entire back yard at night and i can read license tags of cars parked out front. Edit still true, color at night is still unacceptable in full darkness but b&w sensitivities and resolution have improved a lot. This system was rated at 65' which it just barely did, newer cameras can produce a better picture up to 100'. . 4. Lots of cameras - for a typical house, even a large one, four cameras should cover basic security needs. Be sure to include entrances and windows but don't point the camera right at any window or you will only end up with a silhouette of the intruder. Try to point it 90 degrees to the window so you can include the whole act of entry. The same is true of direct or reflected sunlight, it can make id'ing a suspect impossible. You may want additional cameras if you need to monitor intrusion to outdoor buildings like sheds, to check on pets, media rooms, etc. Edit while this is still generally true, increasing crime rates in my area and more stringent demands from judges for positive id from security cameras has altered my opinion. I now have 8 cameras. Once again, better digital compression has made this possible. . 5. Camera visibility - there are two schools of thought here. One is that someone seeing security cameras will move on to the next house and not risk the chance. Another is that the presence of security cameras equates to valuables and they will try to find a way to disable them. Put the cameras where they will be the most effective of catching someone before they break in to your house. Don't install the camera at the front door pointing away to see who is approaching but rather point it at the front door so you can see if they are breaking in or stealing packages left at the door. Edit once again, because of increasing crime and stricter judges i've increased front door coverage a lot. . 6. Ups - no not the parcel delivery service but an uninterruptable power supply (a backup battery). Video security systems record on a hard drive and in many ways are like your home computer. A sudden loss of power or surge can destroy the electronics. And when the power comes back on they may not start up properly and resume recording. That makes them useless to you. Invest in a ups that will keep the system running at least for a short time during a power outage and will help perform a soft shut-down. By the way, a favorite trick of burglars when they see video security is to shut your power off. If your system is still recording on battery power at least it can alert you of an intrusion so you can call authorities. To have that happen it will be necessary to also plug your modem and router into the usp (not a bad idea anyway). . 7. Wireless - home security cameras are a major project to install, how nice it would be to just screw a camera into a wall and have it work. Someday maybe. While wireless cameras sound like the perfect solution, remember you are protecting the security of your home. You need a dependable system. Wireless systems are not dependable. The amcrest systems use dependable hard wires. Edit i still believe a wired system is much more dependable. One thing to consider is wireless (wifi) cameras still need a power source. The newest cameras carry the video, power and even audio on one cable. It's worth the extra time to hard-wire a security system if you really want to depend on it. . How does the amcrest stack up? . . All things considered there is very little lacking in the basic and advanced capabilities of this system. Documentation is very thorough and well-written and presented at a level most first time users will be able to understand. The controls are very intuitive, almost automatic, and the cameras produce very clear video. At 960h (higher than average) the amcrest is better than more expensive competitive brands. The physical installation is on a par with every other brand, none of them would be considered easy to install, that's the nature of this type of product, but the setup installation is far easier than my friend's system due to it leading you step-by-step through the process. It comes with everything you will need for an average home; including an hdmi monitor cable and mouse (you supply the monitor). You get enough cable for a typical home, and longer cables are available, usually at your local big-box hardware store. The entire list of what's in the box is shown above in the product description. Note that you will need an available physical port on your router to use the network-based features. The quality of construction is about the same as more expensive brands i have seen. The size of the controller box is smaller than i expected and there were no specs at the online store page, but it is 10" w x 8. 75" d x 2" h. . Summary:. . This system is a good value for the price and should suit the needs of many people who want/need home video security but don't want to pay double or triple the price. Amcrest is related to foscam who has a very good reputation with video security and monitoring cameras. Edit i read a news story lately that indicates that amcrest makes more "brands" than i imagined, although what they sell under their own name seems to be more targeted to lower-budget systems. . Bottom line:. . Is this the best video security system available? no, but in fairness the going price of top-end models from other brands is substantially more than the asking price here, which is what makes this a 5-star system based on its value for the price. It delivers on quality, dependability, ease of setup and versatility all at an affordable price. There are no tricks or gotchas, it does what it should do (and much more for the more advanced enthusiast). When shopping do keep in mind that there are a lot of advances being made in video technology and, like tv's, the quality will continue to get better and the prices continue to come down. Everything you've read here was based on what was available at the time this review was written. Also note that amcrest supplied part of this system (the basic bare-bones box with no drive and two cameras, one of which arrived with a cracked lens that i had to throw away . I ended up spending about $500 on a hard drive, cameras, cables, etc. For a full working system to review) in exchange for a fair honest review which i did. I didn't fault the seller for the cracked lens as it likely occurred in shipping. . Bottom line. . This system rated highly when it was new and at it's current price it is still a good bare-bones entry-level system from a brand-name company. The rating is based on the system as it was reviewed in 2015, not by today's standards which makes this a rather dated system now. 5150+ comments 2, 786 people found this helpful. Preface

Great camera system. Impressive video quality at a great price. The included software is pretty elaborate and takes some time to tinker with. I'm having a hard time viewing remotely because i don't fully understand all the instruction manual. The instructions are very vague and leave you scratching your head if you're not a computer guru. Ddsn, ipv6, ftp, p2p. All kinds of settings, but nothing in the manual tells you exactly what these protocols are used for. I also don't understand why this system is not offered with 4 dome cameras. The specs on both styles i believe are the same, but typically bullets are for wall mount, and dome are for ceiling mount. I wanted all domes because they stand out a little less. The first time i checked the recordings i found 1 skunk, 2 raccoons and one teenager jumping the neighbors fence into my yard. He must have spotted the cameras, pulled up his hood over his head and ran off! The installation process was a very simple process of plugging things in the right spot. I did have issues with a cable that came in the package, once their customer services were made aware of it through their own quality control methods, because i did not inform the company that there was an issue with the product. They immediately took care of it issued me the replacements to make sure the system is working fine. They have amazing customers service and their product is very easy to install set up and use. I would definitely recommend buying this product. -W. Jarvis

PROS
  • Here are a few helpful tips to save you time and money:. . -buy longer cables - it's easy to underestimate the length you'll need, and these videosecu 4 pack 150 feet pre-made all-in-one video power cctv security camera cables with bnc to rca adapter connector 1oa were affordable and work well. . -unless you're putting the dvr unit right next to your modem or router, then i highly recommend buying a wifi bridge (tp-link tl-wa801nd wireless n300 2t2r access point, 2. 4ghz 300mbps, 802. 11b/g/n, ap/client/bridge/repeater, 2x 4dbi, passive poe). This will transform the system into a wireless system. It's very easy to configure and basically acts as a wireless adapter for the dvr unit. . -if using an iphone/ipad to remotely view the feed, do not buy the "pro" version app - it does not support this unit. However, the free version does, and works very well. . My only gripe is that one of the cameras is not working. Amcrest says they'll send me a new one when i send it back. Depending on how that turns out, i may be adjusting the rating. . See the pic for the view from the iphone app:
  •  this is a first class 4 channel security system. It comes with 4 cameras that can record in 720p video in color during the day and in b/w during the night using excellent night vision capability. The cameras are made of aluminum and very high quality and they are rated to ip66. That is dust tight and water tight to a stream of water at 26. 4 gallons per minute at a pressure of 14. 5 psig. There is a plastic sun shield on the camera that is adjustable. . The dvr contains a 1 tb hard drive that can record 360 hours of video using four cameras at 720p. That is 15 days. The unit features a recording wrap around feature that automatically overwrites the oldest videos when the drive becomes full. There are also two usb ports that you can add external hard disk drives to extend the recording capability. The internal drive is also replaceable with a larger size of hdd. All of the programing options are programmable to suit your needs. You can record continuously, record on motion, record on alarm or record per a predetermined schedule. . What's in the box? . * 720p 4-channel dvr. * four 720p bullet cameras rated to ip66. * mounting hardware for the cameras. * 1tb hard drive already installed in the dvr box. * two 60ft camera cables. * two 100ft camera cables. * a 4ch power supply for the cameras. It is ul approved and it is rated to operate at 100 to 240 vac and 50/60 hz. Its output is 12 vdc rated at 3 amps. * a power splitter to be used to power all 4 cameras. * a dvr power supply that is ul approved and rated to operate from 100 to 240 vac at 50/60 hz. Its output is 12 vdc rated at 2 amps. * user manual and quick start guide. * a set of four window stickers advising intruders that you have an video security system. * a remote control for the dvr that operates on two aaa batteries that are not supplied. * a software disk that has three manuals/quick start-up guides on it plus software. * a good printed instruction manual. * a usb optical mouse that you can use for setting up the system very easily. * 1 year warranty when purchased from foscam. . In my video i show the parts and also the inside of the dvr. I also show the amcrest view light app for the apple devices. You can also use android devices using the android app. After plugging in the internet cable to the dvr you can register it and then use the app to shoot the qr code for the serial number of your device, when the qr is shown on a computer monitor screen. Then you can remotely view the security video while you are away from home. I show this working in my video. . I tried to cover a lot of detail in the video to help you select this unit and to set it up. The unit has a lot of features that i could not cover but it is a very well designed and powerful security system. I rated it at 5 stars and i recommend it to you. . I was supplied a sample for test and evaluation. A review was not promised to the supplier in exchange for the sample but i stated that if i provided a review that it would be fair and honest. . Update: this is installed at my son's home and it is still working perfectly. It is connected to the internet and they can view it while away from home. They caught three teenagers stealing from their home and a neighbor walking his dog down to their home to do his daily business.
CONS
  • The picture quality is very good and besides the annoyance of having to run wires, the system was relatively straight forward to setup. The on-screen user interface is easy to use and overall pretty logical and intuitive. However, the issue i had and the reason for knocking a star is that the remote access setup process is not properly documented in the user manual or quick start guide. They could have really just put a paragraph or two into the quick start guide or user manual and saved me (and probably others) an hour of banging my head trying to figure out why remote access was not working. . Essentially, you have to make sure the dvr is connected to the ethernet cable and that it is assigned an ip address properly from your router before attempting remote access. The default setting on the dvr is set to dhcp and my issue was that dhcp was not working for whatever reason. It took me a good while to realize this was the issue and that i had to manually set a static ip address on the dvr and set the default gateway to my router's ip address. Again the problem here was that this was not documented anywhere and i had to figure it out myself by trial and error. Once the ip address had been set to static and the default gateway set to my router's local ip, i was able to finally get remote access working by enabling the upnp feature and connecting to the wan address via my web-browser. Upnp is located in main menu settings network upnp. . For smartphone access, i was able to get this working after the ip address issue by going to main menu settings network pnp - and then scanning the qr code with the amcrestview app. . Overall its a good system and i would have rated it 4 stars but for the lack of documentation on the remote access setup.
  • I have to say it does its job but needs a few improvements. Good: cameras are easy to install(if you consider camera installs easy in the first place), wire length included should work with most household installation(i have a two story 2200sqft house), 720p is quite clear on close range objects, diy cameras, very extensive book included, online support (if you get on google or youtube), playback wonderful, phone app is free. Bad: wire quality poor or camera (some of my cameras flicker on and off randomly then reset themselves so i suspect its wiring), system randomly resets itself( i still have not found a consistent pattern to the shutdowns), no expandability unless you order another, booklet should be model specific not all inclusive, ptp setup is best left to the pros, phone app could use some improvement for the more savvy user(i only use for checking in). Ugly: as i stated random resets of main unit, unit blows ports on my internet router every time there is a rainstorm( its up to 3 now), for the price this thing really should be able to add some extra wireless cameras, cords require power for every camera so prepare to get a 8-16 port power strip, and the motion sensitivity is waaaaaayyyyyyyyy to sensitive outside (example: wind blows it goes off, spider drops it goes off, leaves fall. You guessed it, it goes off). . Overall this is a quality unit which despite the kickbacks keeps itself running!
  • Item comes packaged well. Installation was not hard, but i am very well suited for it. A person will need a handyman if they have no technical experience. Everything is fine except one major thing! the video resolution is not good. The cameras are able to capture movement, but if it's someone being captured from 10ft - 20ft away you cannot make the person out. Especially at night, the infrared is bad paired with the resolution of this set. If you want clarity upgrade to the 1080 hd cameras this brand has. Make sure the cameras have atleast 2mp each for great picture and clarity.

I ordered this 8ch surveillance system and i received it within three days. I took it out of the box and hook it up for a test run and it worked great. One of the 100 ft. Cords was faulty and i did not receive the remote control with it. I contacted amcrest through there website explained the matter and within three day i had the remote and a replacement cord. So far it has been work very well and it is as clear as your own eyesight. I'm happy i went with the eight camera instead of the four. Again no complaints here so far. . Oct 14, 2015 this is my second write up on this system. The system is working fine and every once in awhile around two am the system seems to reboot itself and wake me up to a alarming noise. One of my cameras will flicker and blink and also goes out for a few seconds and then comes back on. I have a feeling i will need to purchase another camera in the future. Other then that it is still a nice working system. . Jan 31, 2016 i've had this system for a little over five months now and a few things i do not like. First; i have one camera that goes out when the temperature goes below 35 degrees, and a second one flickers in cold weather also. Second; in the morning around seven o'clock the system will try to reboot itself to locate the camera that it has lost its signal in the cold weather. Sometime i will turn the dvr off until it warms up outside for the camera so i will not here the beeping every 5 minutes. Third; you can hear the hard drive while it is running with a humming sound. Overall it is a good system so far, and very clear during the day and night.

WD Purple 3TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD30PURZ

Before reading any review read this: there is a key problem with the way this section is set up. For some reason it lists a very old (2014) model of this drive along with the same new generation improved model. What makes that bad is that the user comments are both mixed together, so any problems with the original drive appear right on top of the list and may be misleading. It s very important then to look at the tiny print at the top of each comment and see if the user is talking about the old generation style or the new generation style. To be clear, i am talking about the improved new generation style. . If you are not already familiar with the difference between a general purpose hard drive and one designed for video security let me start with a very basic comparison. This comparison is very broad and not a textbook definition by any means. . How it works. . Computers write and read their information to a hard drive in tiny chunks that are scattered randomly all over the disk, so the recording/playback heads are constantly jumping from place to place. Speed of access in a computer is extremely important. On the other hand video surveillance recorders write and read their information more like an old-fashioned tape recorder, pretty much just like what the cameras are seeing in real time. The recording/playback heads are only required to jump to another spot on the disk when you want to play back an event. So random-access search time is far less of a priority than the non-stop grunt work of recording dependably 24/7/365 without a hiccup. The two processes are entirely different job tasks. . Comparison: brand a vs. Brand b. . There are two major brands of specialized video surveillance hard drives. My nvr is one of the most respected out there for users who have a lot of experience and they chose to use the other brand of hard drive. Kudos to them because many other video security manufacturers believe you ll never know what s inside so they install the cheapest no-name generic hard drive they can buy. I ve been buying this brand of security system for years and have been very happy with it and when i wanted to increase my drive capacity from 2tb to 4tb i had no idea if switching to a wd brand drive would make any difference at all. Engineers told me that the two brands are not identical in their design philosophy, each brand considering certain design parameters to be the slightly better way to go. . Is there a difference. . Because the nvr software, firmware and other factors play at least as much of a role in performance as the hard drive i was looking to improve these things:. . 1. Drive noise. 2. Drive heat. 3. Stuttering (when the image suddenly jumps or drops a few frames, usually on playback). . I measured the operating temperature both drives in real-life use in identical conditions using a precision instrument. The original drive was operating at 97. 7 f and the wd measured at 91. 6 f. That 6 degree difference is significant but not substantial. . Likewise i used a calibrated sound level meter for each drive. The original drive came in at 47 dba. The wd was at 46. 9 dba, virtually identical. . The last condition is more difficult to quantify because stuttering is sporadic, so in my opinion i would classify any differences in a typical use scenario as atypical, was i experiencing fewer or more instances of stuttering or about the same? i tried to make my comparison without prejudice for or against either brand because i really don t care whose name is on it. I bought the wd primarily to double my recording capacity and hence the number of days it would record events. That being said in real-life everyday use i have to lean slightly toward the wd as having fewer instances of jumping, stuttering or frame dropping in my particular system and it does seem to handle a few second backspace more smoothly than the original drive. Maybe another way of putting it is that the wd seems to be playing nicer with the nvr s software/firmware than the brand the manufacturer originally spec d. . Will it improve my security system. . The short answer is not really. Any differences in operating temperature and noise level are too close to be significant and both brands are optimized for video security so abnormalities like stuttering are just that, and are not completely attributable to the hard drive. We can say categorically that the brand or type of hard drive you use will not improve the image resolution (picture quality) of your system. . Bottom line satisfaction. . All things considered the wd is consistently a few bucks more than the other brand and i m not a big fan of ever paying more if i don t have to. So based on the few things i could measure and one that i could only perceive i have to say i do like this drive and i believe i made the right choice.

Purple Surveillance Hard Disk Drive (Western Digital) FAQ.

I needed to upgrade my tivo hard drive and after doing some research i decided on a survelillance drive as it is made for large video files and is made for fairly continuous operation. With 3tb of space i don't have to worry about shows being deleted. I can save all episodes of futurama and other favorites. Drive seems quiet and after a couple of months, i have had zero issues. So far so good. -Notice from W. Jacqueline, St. Helens

I purchased this drive to go with my new netgear centria n900 dual band gigabit wireless router with 3. 5" storage bay (wndr4700). I have this set up as an internal wireless lan at my home and store all my video and music content on this drive. With the n900 wireless this does for me more than any dvr out there can since i can access it from any device in my house including my desktop. Great combination. My plan is to add in a couple wireless surveillance cameras to the setup in the near future, and i expect it to continue to work just as good for that purpose as it does for my multimedia streaming.

- J. JulianaI'm using this in my hikvision surveillance system. So far so good. Plugged two of them in and fired up the machine. Set it to initialize them and they've been working ever since. Just what i needed. . Remember, if you are using hard drives for surveillance systems, you will need to get something like this which is specifically designed for constant write access. If you want one for your computer, this isn't needed. Just get a regular one.

I have purchased several of these. I have not had one fail yet. The are twice the storage i could get just a few years ago and half the price. Just remember that if you are running a 32 bit os on your dvr you can only use 2 tb of the storage space.

I wish i could give this six stars! totally impressed with this system especially for the money. My tech savvy is hovering around zero and i was able to install this four camera system in one afternoon and remotely access my surveillance video from my cell phone and tablet. So user friendly that i didn't even need tech support. Picture is crystal clear on 1080, and night vision is great considering we are in the country and its pitch dark at night. I couldn't be happier with this system, it comes with everything you need to set up a higher end home security system for a fraction of the price of hiring a security company to do it. I am disabled and was still able to install it in about 6 hours. Only thing missing is a tv or monitor, i recommend at least a 50" to take full advantage of the higher definition, but any size will do. Love that i can access it from any place from my phone and check on the place. It records about a week, but i also have an additional 4 cameras hooked up for a total of 8. It has served me for over a year and i am very pleased with it

Smart, safe and secure, seagate skyhawk hdds are engineered for 24x7 video recording. They feature 3x the workload rating of desktop drives and can store up to 10, 000 hours of digital video on capacities up to 10tb.

Bought the 2 pack of these 150ft cables and i'm very happy with my purchase. Needed these to have cameras on my garage that is not connected to my house so ran them thru pvc and buried 6" deep have one camera covering my alley and one inside watching my toys. Don't seem to have any signal loss compared to the other cameras that are on shorter cables and closer to dvr so overall for the money if you're looking for long cables can't go wrong with these.

Just delivered 8/3/17, got them on the next day. Already happy with them. The 1080p is much clearer and a better investment. I had the 960h 4ch model and wished i bought this the 1st time. The pros: lense is wide, the night vision is good and so is the playback, can see faces in day/night and license plates on playback, the design is nice with a rod with a ball on the end to angle the camera, they dont look cheap, and 2tb hdd. Cons: probably just the amcrest view pro app, a little complicated at first and drains my phone battery.

This system is unbelievable for price, quality and even packaging was top quality . Cameras were very easy to hook up to dvr . , image quality was excellent during day night is equally good to the range of emitter. Only complaint would be the lack of good detailed set up and explanation of programming options . The system is capable of doing way more than i am able to figure out. There are features i would like to use but need to spend more time online researching programming. Would however recommend this product to anyone without question .

I called support to help me reconfigure my router and its port forwarding so i can get to the dvr from my iphone and ipads. I was dreading wrestling with the thing, but it was crazy how easy it was, basically configured itself into my network. Gary took over my laptop and worked miracles. This dvr has worked out great for me. I was upgrading an older system that had 4 cameras, so this unit which came with 4 cameras and 8 inputs was perfect for me to have 8 total. I will say that this system does work fine with off-brand coaxial cable cameras, but my older cameras resolution is not nearly as sharp as the ones which came with this system, so i may upgrade the others to amcrest video cameras as well later on. . The mobile app for my phone was easy enough to set up and can be used to check the cameras pretty quickly. My wife is also able to use the app as well. The motion detection grid is very fine and adjustable and that feature works well. . About the only thing which is slightly cumbersome is that you can only review four channels at a time, not all eight, but for the price it is still a very great value. Highly recommended if you have existing coaxial and power lines for cameras, but this also comes with cable to run new lines as well, and power supply. If you have a large budget and are doing a new install, one of their network (poe) camera systems might be better, but i am very pleased with this system and this company.

This is a terrific drive. I have had great luck with wd drives and this one is no exception. I bought a mybooklive and a seagate black armor at the same time a few years ago. The seagate has been replaced twice under warranty and finally died out of warranty. I bought this drive and put it in the seagate box and it works great! i use this drive in a 24/7 operation and put a small fan on the case as seagate did not do that. It stays very cool with just a 30 mm ball bearing fan. The drive is quiet and fast.

- Q. JacquelineI needed to upgrade my tivo hard drive and after doing some research i decided on a survelillance drive as it is made for large video files and is made for fairly continuous operation. With 3tb of space i don't have to worry about shows being deleted. I can save all episodes of futurama and other favorites. Drive seems quiet and after a couple of months, i have had zero issues. So far so good.

So far so good. I got this hardrive for my blue iris security cam system. Ive had no problems or and video glitches. . *update*. I found an issue writing directly to the drive from the cameras. The files are 100% fragmented and cause glitches in recording as the drive fills up. Im not sure i would blame the drive though. My solution was to get a small 128 gb ssd to use for the "new" folder in blue iris, then set the "storage" folder to the wd drive. Since i have done this i have not had any more issues.

I have been running this hd on our surveillance system for about a month now. So far there have been zero problems or warnings of any drive problems. Accessing the video later is also not a problem. We have 6 1080p cameras and i am topping out at about 15 days before the video starts to overwrite. For us this is a good amount of time to have access and i don't see a reason to go larger. I normally do not write reviews, but i learned alot when looking a budget "home owners" security camera system, and i figured i would contribute to all the other great reviews i read helping me decide which system to purchase. A couple points to make, i narrowed it down to 2 choices, the amcrest, and the lorex. Both offered a comparable system for around $350 - $400 and have seen the lorex system in person and was impressed. I almost bought the lorex system because as it was an 8 channel system for the same price. (the amcrest was is only 4, always thinking of future expansion) both systems are 1080p hd, however, the lorex system only supplies 720p resolution cameras, the amcrest are 2. 0mp (1920 x 1080). 720p cameras are cheaper (hence why the can offer and 8 channel dvr) i wanted at-least hd quality for zooming. Now we can debate weather power over ethernet is better than coax. But as i stated before, $350 - $400 is the price range i wanted to be, and poe added a considerable cost. Lets face it, your cable tv feed is coax and has no problem with hd broadcast! the coax cables supplied with this system are really good quality, the termination ends are ok (don't take my opinion on the ends, i make my own cables and not a fan of pre-made cables) the cables are complete with video and power, so you will be running only one cable per camera. Not having any experience with camera systems, i assumed video and power were separate runs? keep in mind, you will have to drill a 5/8" hole to feed the bnc connector into you house, a little silicone. Done as i have siding and peeled the bottom layer back to achieve penetration. I am still learning how to fluently use the system. One review i read stated the onscreen qr code for the app didn't work, i would have to confirm this to be true i could not get that thing to work! , however, top front or the dvr there was a qr code sticker. Voila! my ios app is functioning well. Another review i read stated that once the cameras were mounted, you are limited to rotating the base. Not true! loosen the bigger screw more than you think you should loosen it, and the whole camera pivots with ease. Depending on where you mount your camera, the 90 degree viewing angle covers more 100 feet for on of my locations. This is great if you want overlapping coverage. One other point to make is upon powering up the system, the default camera resolution is 720 at 30 fps, you will need to change this to achieve 1080, but at 15 fps. Remember! this is a security system not a live feed tv show. At 15 fps, the motion is still fluid. And the dvr display needs to be changed to 1920 x 1080. All in all, you will be super impressed with this home owners budget system!

The reviews from other people are what helped me make the decision to purchase this product. So far it has worked great. I like having the flexibility to fine tune the motion detection and the various options for recording. This dvr has 8 inputs so i bought a few more cameras separately. One camera has audio which i plugged into the back of the dvr and now i can listen to the inside of my house with the android app.

- V. KimberlySo far it has been able to exceed my expectations. Not to hard to use with all the apple computers & devices. The directions are not in chinglish. Lots of utube example (windows) . The newer model is not able to save the configuration that i can find. The menu for this feature is not like the book/pdf. Would be nice to save the setup on a cf/computer hd for quick restore or setup. Good tech support. This is my third dvr an by far the best. I especially like the 1080p video resolution.

I'm revisting my previous review on this purchuse. It took me some time to get it all installed and cameras adjusted, it was my first time working with this type of product. I love it, just 4 cameras works for me but i would suguest the 8 channel system with 4 cameras to start, then you can add more as needed. The 1080p 2mp cameras have a clear sharp image, i bought a 20" stand alone monitor for the system and built a shelf in a closet in our spare bedroom. Its hidden away but easily accessible when i need it. Now i just need to spend time working with it in order to learn all the fuctions. Watching it on my smart phone is also pretty cool. First vision tec. Was the way to go they'll help you out if you get stuck. 00

I bought the 8-channel system, but currently only plan to use 4 of the cameras. Installation is probably going to be the biggest challenge for most people. However, if you are a competent diy'er, you shouldn't have a problem. The biggest challenge for me was how to get the wiring inside the house, because i live in a 2-story house and did not want to run wires to the attic and then down the walls. My solution was to pull the vinyl soffit above my porch and run the wires into my office that shared an outside wall with the porch. I drilled a 1" hole with a paddle blade bit, into the top plate and then just fished the wires down the wall (with a fish tape) in between the insulation and the drywall. Inside of my office, i cut a rectangle in the drywall about the size of an electrical box so i could cover it with a wall plate when finished. I did this because all of my cameras will be monitoring the front door/porch/driveway and the 65' of wiring that this system comes with was plenty to cover that area. If you use this method and are removing any vinyl soffits or vinyl siding, purchase a vinyl siding removal tool and a fish tape, they saved me a lot of time and were instrumental in the completion of the project. . Ok, now the product itself. . Dvr: the dvr comes with an hdmi cable, an ethernet cable, and a mouse. You need to provide a monitor and i just hooked it up to an old flat monitor i had with a vga cable which is not provided. The dvr is compact and comes with a qr code sticker that has the unit id on it. (this will help when you set up the ios or android app. Connecting all of the wires on the back of the dvr is self explanatory. . Cameras: the cameras seem to be made of pot metal but otherwise are of good quality, the screws to mount them are cheap aluminum screws and will strip easily if you are not careful, the same goes for the set screws that are used to secure the camera to the arm and the angle bend in the arm. The cameras are not black but more of a dark metallic grey. They look great and i didn't have an issue with the color. One suggestion i have is that before you mount the cameras, set up the entire system and test the cameras before you begin installation. That way you can determine that all of the cameras are set up correctly and are working before you mount them. . Software: in other reviews i read that the documentation was lacking and people had issues setting up the system software. I read the online manual from the amcrest website and also watched a few youtube videos produced by amcrest and have to say that they made it easy to set up. If you are not sure what the menu is for you can always google the topic and figure it out. Example: setting up a ddns account to be able to view your cameras via the internet. They do not explain everything you need to know about this, but you can look it up. I'm ok with that. So the combination of the youtube videos and the online documentation from the amcrest website are your best bet for simple set up. Just go to the amcrest website and look up your model and everything you need is on the product page. . So far i have one of the cameras mounted and will finish the installation of the other 3 today, but i wanted to write a review while it was fresh on my mind. I will update later with any additional information i have about the system.

Since we moved into our home several years ago we always thought that having an alarm system (vivint) was all we'd ever need to protect our home. We also put up several yard signs indicating that our home was indeed protected by an alarm system and that would be burglars should find another home to plunder. . Nevertheless, our home was burglarized and when the police arrived the very first thing they asked us was if we had a video camera that possibly got a picture of the bad guys or their vehicle. That's when it hit me, if you don't have a camera system keeping an eye on your home when you are away then you are blind to anything that happens at your home when you're away. . The next day i ordered the amcrest 720p hd 4ch system. . The most difficult part of the installation by far having to run the cabling through my attic. Dripping in sweat, covered in insulation, and working in very confined spaces almost got the best of me, but i knew that in the end that it would be worth it. . When the cabling was finished and i started up the system and saw the hd quality video feed i was immediately impressed. For a little background on myself, i'm a network engineer and i'm used to working with cisco routers, switches, etc that cost tens of thousands of dollars. The thought of purchasing a complete home video surveillance system (minus monitor) for $325 had me initially thinking that this wasn't going to be a quality product and i must say that i was wrong. What an excellent product this is and a great investment for only several hundred bucks! . . Take it from me and buy an amcrest system to supplement your existing home security system. You will be glad that you did!

Amcrest 720p:. 1) cameras are heavy-duty metal, not plastic. 2) set-up was pretty easy. I learn more from visual examples instead of a manual, so if you are like me i suggest you review the various youtube video's instead of the manual. Most folks don't read instructions, but at least check out the video's first. 3) iphone app was fairly easy, but had to make adjustments in the phone settings for it to work. Problem is, i have too many internet users at home, so my supply of internet won't support all of the users and the hdcvi. Not a big deal because when you're away you can simply connect it up to the router then. 4) had a small technical issue five days after installation, but amcrest made it right and very fast. 5) i purchased the 4 camera system, but i highly suggest you buy the 8 camera system because once you see the cameras in person, you will want more viewing angles. Since you can't add cameras to a 4 camera system, you are better served getting the 8 system and only use the number of cameras you want/need. I now wish i had the capability to add 2 more cameras. The system works just fine with 1 hooked up or all connected. So it's better to have the ability to add more if needed. 6) the most impressive thing is one of the cameras aided the police to identify burglars in the neighborhood only 12 hours after initial installation! when the police came to review the footage, i had to "learn up" quick on how to review the recorded footage. . Bottom line is most electronics are made in china, but i believe there are certain grades of products made there. The amcrest 720p is not the cheapest grade and probably a higher grade than you would find at your local box store retailer or home supply warehouse. I like the 720p over the 960h because it's much clearer and has a wider viewing angle. . I will be referring this product to my friends.

Why i bought it:. My wife wanted to purchase a security monitoring service and after doing some research i was unimpressed with reviews and the cost for the services from many companies in my area, so i decided to buy and install my own. The quality of this product is great for what i was needing and i now have my own personal monitoring system around my home. . I have absolutely no experience with video security systems and this was incredibly easy to install. I honestly did not even read the instructions because it seemed pretty straight forward, and it was. The hardest part of the install was moving around my attic with the wiring, but that had nothing to with the product. It took about six hours to install all 4 cameras with most of that time being spent crawling through tight spaces in my attic to connect the wires into the video cameras. The time spent setting up the equipment was maybe 30 minutes. I was also very happy to see that i could hook this up to my television and now with the push of a button i can see all four cameras on my television screen. This is great for checking the front door when there is an unexpected visitor, or to see what the noise was in my backyard. . There is also an app for this video security system that works perfectly. From anywhere i can instantly check on my home. I have used the app every day since i installed the system and i have never had any problems with it. . I honestly do not have any complaints with this product and my wife is satisfied with these security system in place of a pricey monitoring system. This has saved me a lot of money and i am completely satisfied (i really wasn't expecting something this great considering how affordable it was). I would recommend this product to anyone in search of a home video security system. Feel free to ask me any questions you have.

3 start, just because i haven't hooked it up yet. . Very sturdy cameras, metal framing yet, light enough to mount on exterior walls without special "heavy duty" mount/anchors. . I just had electricians run the power and cable for the entire home setup, 4 cameras outside on all 4 corners for complete coverage. . 4 cameras on interior, ceiling mounted for 100% coverage. These domes are also heavy metal casting housings like exterior bullet cameras. . The dvr unit is compact and seems like a nice unit with external monitoring capabilities via app or online (? ), not too sure yet. . I'll have them up and running this weekend and i will update with results and hopefully some photos and possible videos. . If all goes well, i will give it 5 shining stars. . Update: 11/06/2016. Just got the system hooked up last night and setup. . Since this is our new home, we still have no internet access so, this is just a update on system operation and video quality. . All 8 channels are functioning and video are crystal clear. Although i have audio enabled, i could not hear anything sibce there is no speaker connected yet. . Motion detection working good, with csmera pointibg out on drive way, it will sense other vehicles driving by. . I will update on complete system performance once i have internet access, to include amcrest mobile app and remote monitoring on my desktop. . Update: 03/03/2017. . I've had this system running for some time now and found few things i like and few i don't like. . Pros:. 1. Infrared lighting makes night vision video recording possible automatically. 2. Fairly good quality video out of the box. 3. Sturdy hardware, cameras are not cheap plastic like some. 4. Easy hook-up and programming. . Cons:. 1. No audio. 2. No zoom function. 3. No panning of video cameras. 4. Touchy/sensitive infrared. 5. Software don't work as it should. To elaborate, when i have the system to record on motion trigger, it works fine. When i disable the motion triggered recording, cameras record anyway, day and night. . So, there is actually no "off state" on cameras which fills the drive in few days and need to be cleared at least every 4-5 days. . That makes this system useless when you go off on vacation/trips lasting more than 4 days or so. . In comes the app. Nice part of this app, is that you can monitor the system away from home and keep tabs on hdd and clear space as needed. . Although sometimes app won't connect on first try, i did not have any issues connecting other than hsving to try multiple times occasionally. . So, my rating will remsin the same at 4 stars.

Excellent system, i messed with installation couple of hours due to my attic. The system gives you immediately pictures of all cams. I set up cellphones to monitor cams when i am not at home. There is a free app, amcrest view lite. If you install a system like this, you must hide the dvr or a burglar will take it along with the other stuff and you would get burned twice. . Install it on a place where you can permanently install it, not in your living room or computer room! pick a cabinet or something you can put in screws to block access to the doors!

This review is for the 720p 4channel product here:amcrest 720p hd over analog (hdcvi) 4ch video security system - four 1. 0 mp weatherproof ip66 bullet cameras, 65ft ir led night vision, long distance transmit range (1, 640ft), pre-installed 1tb hd for 360 hours 8ch recording 720p 30fps, quick qr code smartphone access, usb backup and more. . I really like this purchase. This has been installed for about a month now and it works very well. The options presented to you by the software in this dvr are so many that they can be overwhelming! there are lots of pros to this product in my opinion:. . Pros:. - it's complete! cameras! cords! power supply! you don't need to buy anything else! (as long as you have a monitor to borrow for a minute). - mine is 720p and seems like enough clarity to identify someone. - if you have the right app (the *right* app is important), you can scan the qr code on the base and talk to the dvr with your phone in seconds! . - powerful, easy to use software. You have more options than you can handle! . - someone who answered the phone right away! . . Cons:. - 1tb hard drive will not have evidence if you leave for over a week. - fan is noticeable, not really loud, but it's there. . I was having trouble getting my phone (galaxy s4) to get on with my system. I called the help line and was told very quickly i had the wrong app (they have several). I got the right app on there, s canned the code and was changing settings right away. . You can even set the system to send messages to your phone is there is motion, masking (flashlight, paper, etc covering the whole picture), or even face detection! all for less than three hundred bucks! . . Tl; dr just buy it. Powerful.

Amcrest 720p over analog hdcvi - 4 channel. . This is my personal review for the amcrest 4 channel 720p hdcvi unit. I ordered this to install in my mothers house for video surveillance/security. It fulfills this need very nicely. . Hardware - the dvr fan is loud but not too crazy loud. All the cameras functioning perfectly with crisp clear images. The night vision is adequate but its not military grade. It more a middle of road night vision. Images within 10 feet are clear so it serves my purposes great. Night vision really depends on the sensor and available light sources to augment it. The day light images are of great quality though. I feel for the price of the unit its biggest bang for the buck. . Software - the dvr software is not elegant but it is very straight forward if you have ever used a computer or setup your own wireless router. You can interface with the dvr through a mouse *(i used the mouse with separately purchased monitor as this unit does not come with a monitor)*. I find the monitor to be useful for ongoing monitoring and light troubleshooting. . Smartphone access - i found the amcrest lite view app pretty good in usefulness. It functions both on iphone and android per my testing. I did initially have issues with the p2p connection (this is the barcode scan and quick connection you use on smartphones). I placed a quick call to amcrest support and a representative named jono was able to quickly troubleshoot the issue for me. I will say it appears the amcrest software is finicky when it comes to user passwords. Hint to the wise don't use numbers or crazy characters as for some reason those caused issues for me. . Computer access - to access the security camera from home or away you will need to use the ddns address from the dvr setup. If you are having issues please uninstall the webview and resintall it. . Helpful hints: amcrest has 3 short easy to follow youtube video that help you setup the dvr. I highly suggest following these in order, it really eliminates most issues you will face. . In conclusion, i will say that this is my first diy install of a security surveillance system. The biggest issue i faced was running the wires in a older house. The software issue i face was quickly resolved by jono at amcrest support. I am really pleased with the product and my mother can view her house from home or while she is away. The 1 tb harddrive included provides decent storage also and it automatically overwrites older files. Also please upgrade your uint's firmware to latest firmware which is available for download directly from amcrest support webpage. . I have attached a smartphone picture of the monitor so you can get a general feel for the picture quality. Happy securing and best wishes.

M. Linda, Iowa

Now that the system s up and running properly i can give it a complete rating. . Pros. 1. Good picture. 2. Not too complicated to navigate system functions. 3. Picks up the slightest movement on camera. . Cons. 1. Night vision doesn't extend the distance it claims. 2. When i use my tv remote for my personal tv it changes the screens on the dvd. 3. Tech support is nothing more than a customer service rep reading glasses from a screen (not a actually technically inclined person. . Indifferent-quality of dome camera seems to bee better that billet style.

A great, simple security system. My home was burglarized and i had this installed less than two days later thanks to online store. Very easy set up if you have a moderate understanding of technology. The included cables are plenty long enough for my application, reaching the 4 corners of my 1800 sf home. The user interface doesn't really look like anything i'm used to and took a little getting used to. There are many settings you can tweak to get the desired results. Love being able to see a live view of my home from my phone. Or playback video from when i get a motion detection notification. I can't see beating this system for the money. If i was buying again i'd only want more, i would have bought the 8ch 1080p. With these 720p 1 mp cameras you wont be able to make out someones eye color, read their tattoos or even get a clear shot of a license plate if it's more than 25 feet away or so. The included fan in the dvr is a bit loud if you plan to keep in in a living area. I quickly replaced mine with a premium fan.

U. Zelda, Lincolnshire

My first outdoor security camera system and straight up this is what sold me on this one over any others on online store. 1. Picture quality is great 2. Night vision is amazing. 3. I have an app on my iphone and works great every time. Last thing that really sold me was i called a couple of customer service companies phone numbers to ask questions about the product and amcrest was the only one who answered the phone every time and answered all my questions. Great product very cool to see on my phone all the cameras from work.

B. Mable, Languedoc-Roussillon says

The setup was fairly easy, as i have read in other reviews, and using it is relatively easy also. I am over 50 and, although i use a computer and a smart phone, technology does not come naturally to me. I bought the system because we have been experiencing vandalism outside our home. Once i figured out what i was doing, it is fairly easy to playback the recorded video and watch in normal, fast, or slow speed, and jump around to particular times. For the price, i am quite impressed with the product. Video quality is good, particularly during the daylight hours. Watching the nighttime video is hard on the eyes, but the quality is pretty good.

Q. Denise, Utah

We originally bought these cameras because we had unruly neighbors. They would fight and argue outside, scream and yell, etc. We needed proof of their shenanigans in case anything happened. Flash forward to nye, our truck was stolen from in front of our house. We live in a rowhouse. Not only did we get a perfect video of him with a crystal clear picture of his face. We also got his cohorts on video who came to scope our place out initially. We pray we get the truck back. But the cops are all over these guys now. Im extremely impressed. Their customer service is also fantastic. These are pictures of my monitor, so they dont give it much justice.

. Angelica, Wandsworth says

Cameras are very clear. Needed to buy an additional ir spot light for over the driveway but that's okay. Installed the camera system just in time to catch some kids stealing stuff out of the cars. System interface takes time to get used to. But great product.

. Meredith, Victoria says

Very simple review. This system has everything you need and would want in a security system. It comes with everything necessary except long wires if you need them. My phone connects seamlessly to the system wherever i am. Setup was easy, so easy. The hardest part is running wires in the attic. Night vision is great. Very good visual quality. The visual quality on the phone is less then that on an actual monitor hooked up to the system. . Really to put it in one sentence, this blows away the competition cause it does what it's suppose to do and is easy to use/ setup.

D. Irene, Knowsley

I purchased the system on prime day. The mailbox was demolished with fireworks over the 4th so i now needed surveillance to keep and record video of the vandals. I read the instructions and was a bit overwhelmed but in actuality it was very easy. You need a monitor for the setup, and i didn't want to run ethernet cable, so i took a recommendation and purchased a tp-link extender, i have only hooked up 2 cameras off the garage but they work great. I had initially set them on all the time, but have since changed them to motion. The last 2 cameras will require me to attach them to the soffets and drop the lines from the attic to the basement where the recorder is located. I can check everything from my smart phone from the amcrest link app. So far, so good - day time recording is great, night time is ok but can give you some strange sights, i get some reflected glare from a spider web on a illuminated driveway. Overall, it came together a+ and the price couldn't be beat. Update 9/23/16, i'm reducing my stars to 4, the reason being is that while the app works, and the software works on my mac pro notebook, there is no way to review a recording using a 'fast forward ' option because it doesn't exist in the software. To review using 'fast forward ' you have to be in front of the hdd unit and then use the supplied remote, max is 16x and using a remote monitor plugged into the hdd. Amcrest told me that they are aware of the issue and working on it - bummer. Update 10/15/16, finished hooking up the last 2 cameras, front door and rear deck, every thing went smoothly, had to run the wires down from the attic to the basement through a wall, cut the sheet rock top and bottom, drilled hole through header and base boards, ran the wires, then put back the sheet rock and retaped. Attached the cameras, set up the motion area that i wanted covered, had the wife and dog go out the back door and then went back to the main unit and did a review playback, everything worked just fine. Installation book could use some clarity on the instructions. Bottom line, correct install with hidden wires takes some thought time and some physical work, items work as stated, overall clarity is really decent, daytime better than total darkness, but the night is decent. I know i made the right choice with the wired cameras, because the wifi cameras require a 115 outlet for the power transformer. The front and rear cameras are mounted on my soffets and we have a raised ranch, not something i want to have to climb a ladder to do very often. Just leave slack in all of the wires, attic in case you need to replace a non-working camera, at the hdd unit in case you need to change the camera power supply. Bottom line, think things out, draw up a plan, have the necessary tools, drill bits, stud finder, tape compound, etc. I would give it 5 stars if the instructions were better and you could do a review from my iphone/smartphone with a fast forward. Latest 7/17 upgraded to 3tb hd - wired is way to go, wireless cameras can be hacked.

This is an absolutely fantastic product. Installed and configured right out of the box with little hassle. The cameras are very clear, and while i'd prefer stronger night-vision capbilities, i understand that for the price this is very good, and i have turned on more "always-on" outside floodlights to help the units. The android and iphone app works flawlessly, and i can see my business from anywhere in the world now. . I also really like that you can set a motion sensor alarm for certain hours/days. So when it's triggered i get an alarm email on my cell phone along with a still capture of what triggered it. I also love the playback functionality on the mobile app, so i can go back and see any camera's activity from a certain time/day. . I know there are more robust systems out there, some from this same maker. But this 4-camera system covered the inside and outside of my business perfectly, and i couldn't be happier with it.

For the money, this is an excellent hd system. I had tried several others, lorex and night owl and had tons of issues and the lorex was awesome and had a great picture but it was loud and would lock up, even on the replacement they sent me. Besides being almost twice the price. The access on your smartphone is pretty good, but getting a connection is not 100% reliable, although it works most of the time. Overall, i cannot say anything bad. I hope the system stays this way and continues to work this well. Also worth mentioning is that the cameras seem to be wide angle, which is great, compared to others i tried where it was too zoomed in. One single camera gives you a wide field of vision! very happy! customer support is decent too. They didn't get back to me right away (within 24hr), but they did get back to me within 2 days and were helpful and seemed to want to help. My father in law was so impressed that he just bought the 1080 one. But at twice the price, i was fine with this one

F. Paula, York says

The picture quality is decent for the live view. If you access the "playback" feature (where you can see video from hours or days ago) the video quality gets clearer. It was very simple to set up and all of the items needed were shipped with good packaging. You get four cords for the four cameras to connect. Two of the cords are shorter (60') than the other two (100'). I saw a review about the dvr being loud, but i don't think it is. It's quiet enough for me. It sounds almost like the sound a computer cpu would make while it's on. I did not receive any circular stickers showing where to drill the holes like the amcrest video tutorial online shows. You might have to measure the holes yourself.

J. Pearson, East Riding of Yorkshire

This is the first security system that i have bought, installed, and used. With that being said, when considering the price this is a great system to have whether you are a small business owner or homeowner. . The cameras themselves seem to be high quality and sturdy for a consumer product. I especially like the fact that they are constructed out of aluminum. Now when i read the manual online and the one that came with the system, it mentioned the use of set screws to secure the position of the dome camera when mounted. However, the cameras that i received do not employ set screws and instead rely on a system of what appears to be rubber pads that, when you screw in the camera into the base, apply pressure and prevent movement. To be honest, this is most likely does not lead to a significant decrease in the tamper resistance of the overall system, and you can setup alerts when the camera is masked, which would most likely have to occur if one wanted to change the position of the camera, but i personally would have liked to have the system of set screws. . As for the receiver, the quality of the device is good for what it is. However, as many have mentioned, the fan(s), depends on which system you buy, is/are very loud. As a result, i highly recommend replacing them with the noctua nf-a4x10-flx 5v fan. While replacing the fan, i did notice that the hard drive is a surveillance hdd and is from a reputable manufacturer, mine is from seagate, which, to me, was very reassuring in terms of reliability and longevity of the device. . I am not a fan of the software, however, used on the dvr. I spent a lot of time fine-tuning the settings for the motion detection, alerts, etc. And ultimately turned some of the features off for certain channels as i could not get it behave how i wanted it to. But if you did not completely read the manual, you will be spending even more time going back and forth between the screen and the manual when you go to setup the more advanced features of the system. Even still, the manual is not that much of a help when it comes to explaining a lot of the settings of the more advanced functions of the system, e. G. Email alerts, etc. So, i suggest having your computer or phone ready so you can search through the amcrest forums for answers, which you will most likely find. Also, if you can, have a friend help you out when you go to setup features like motion detection as it will save you time and the hassle of running back and forth. . Overall, the system is great and certainly exceeds my needs. Despite the difference in the design of the camera (no set screws), the lack of acknowledgement of said design change in the manual, and what i find to be an antiquated software on the dvr, i find this system deserves five stars and have recommended it to several friends already.

I have had this dvr for a little over a year now and it's been very good. I have 6 of the amcrest cameras, and two dahua on it. Mostly, for the past year, i have watched the raccoons, stray cats etc, until last week. There was a druggy / prowler hanging around the neighborhood. I had vid of him during the day, and also when he tried to get in at 2 am the next night. My dog scared him away, and then he went on to break into 3 more homes. . The cops that came said it was the best home video they had ever seen and with the daytime shots too, were able to make a positive id on him and caught him.

april 9th, 2015 update: i purchased the amcrest 720p hdcvi 4ch 1tb dvr security camera system back in mid-february (when there were scant reviews about the company & product. Within 2 weeks after writing the favorable-review (shown below), the price jumped from $349. 00 to $379. 00. A couple of weeks later, the priced jumped another $20. 00 to $399. 00. . As many have stated - customer support from amcrest is adequate - if you're willing to wait days for an e-mail response, or have the endurance to spend hours on-the-phone. I feel that many of these tech-support calls could be avoided/remedied by amcrest/foscam putting more effort into their installation/instruction booklet. I would hope that amcrest/foscam would be content with increased sales generated by favorable reviews, and not see it as an opportunity/justification to increase prices. . . I purchased the amcrest 720p hdcvi 4ch 1tb dvr security camera system - received it in just a couple of days. The packaging of the equipment has been well-cover by others, so i'll just say "it exceeded my expectations - by far! " i took my time installing the system and cameras - overall, basic installation, setup, programming, recording, smart-phone app for remote-viewing was pretty straight forward. I'm working on the e-mail notification setup right now - it's a bit more involved, but nothing too tedious - i'll update more on this aspect when i'm done. Let me say this - i owned a lorex lw491 wireless system before this amcrest - returned the lw491 within 2 weeks! - the camera resolution between the lw491 and the amcrest is like trying to compare a 300 dpi dot-matrix printer to a high speed laser printer - simply no comparison! . . Some folks were asking how to setup email notifications (and attach snapshots/video) - watch the video for the steps (email notification isn't clearly addressed in the amcrest instructions - a minor critique, but overall, a great product!

Bought this system back in sept 2015. Amcrest was one of the better reviewed companies offering 720p cameras at an affordable rate. I went ahead and bought the 4 channel for $329 (it has subsequently been reduced to $299. ) but i waited until the winter passed before i finally got these bad boys up. When i cracked open the box i was impressed at the wires made available, containing 2x60' and 2x100' cables. The cameras were packaged extremely well and the dvr came with a 1tb hd in it already (i read you can upgrade the hd size and after opening the dvr up i saw how easy it was to swap out for a 2 or 3 tb). . Getting the cameras up were easy, i made the mistake of not looking at the tips of the wires. Be warned, each wire end is specific to a camera plug and a dvr plug. Two of my first 3 wires hung were backwards, luckily, the hardest wire hung was correct. After getting up the cameras i saw a 4 power supply contraption that wasn't mentioned anywhere in the literature. Come to find out it's what the other end of the camera wire plugs into to. One end into the dvr and one end into this power supply which powers each camera. The cord really isn't that long, make sure you have an extension cord if you plan to have the dvr any distance form an outlet (mine is hidden away and not near an outlet so a cord was needed). . The video feed was great, but my cousin brought cat6 cable to run the dvr into the modem. Bad news, after running the cable through the attic we come to find you need to use cat5e cable, not cat6. After finally swapping out all the ethernet cable we had flashing lights at the modem and the dvr! unfortunately, for some reason. I was not able to login to the cameras via the app nor through the web portal. I made sure all ports were forwarded and yet still nothing. I must've watched 10 videos on youtube from amcrest and still no luck, though their videos are very helpful and walk you through everything quite well. Finally, i threw in the towel and called tech support (something i hate doing). Luckily, a young lady named ashley richardson was able to remote desktop my computer, reset my password, delete the old account, do some hocus pocus (i was working in my wood shop with the phone on speaker while she was working her magic). When i finally tried to login with a new password, voila! i checked my tablet, my phone, etc and all logged in no problem. . Was a little weird she asked me to do an online store review and even took me to my purchase via remote desktop, but i was gonna give a 5 star anyway. Just seemed strange they literally walk you to the online store webpage. Either way, 5 stars were earned and i'm quite happy with the purchase.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

Cameras could be a bit better, but great for the money!

U. Cortney, Hartlepool

This unit represents a great entry unit with some very positive feedback. Overall i'm happy with the unit and would rate it 3. 5 stars if given that option. There are some reasons that i can't overlook even despite the price. . Pros:. Very easy setup. Includes all cables needed to view unit (minus a monitor). App on phone works well enough and required minimal setup. Some peace of mind included. . Cons:. Camera quality could be better. Nvr software is very dated and lacking. Firmware update caused a return on the unit. . We purchased this unit like a lot of other people due to security concerns for our house. I reviewed a lot of different units and wanted something that was good quality without breaking the bank. Overall i'm happy with what i have, but a few things drive me crazy. Unpacking the unit and reviewing everything was easy enough. I was a bit concerned that the 60' cables included would not be long enough to run where i wanted to, but it was easily long enough. So advice 1 is prior to purchasing other cables check first. One thing to state for the record is i was unclear how the unit was powered. A kind reviewer answered this question for me. Power for the cameras goes through the coax style cable. There are two plugs to power the security camera. One for the dvr and a pigtail type device to power the cameras. Each camera needs to be plugged into power and the nvr to review the video. . So to get started there is a guide that i immediately discarded because that is what you do. I unpacked everything and plugged in the nvr as i was supposed to. First thing i tried to do was run one of the cables from approximately the point where i wanted the camera (longest run) and where i placed the nvr. It had approximately 15' to spare so that was a relief. From there i tested each of the cameras to confirm that the unit functioned, and it did with no problem. Honestly it is as simple as plug and play. Just plug it in, turn the unit on, and you have a camera. Of course you'll want to change the passwords, but this comes on with the wizard automatically. . Next step i had was running the cables. This is the most tedious and longest part. I ran the cables through my attic space to keep them as hidden as possible. I dropped the cables to approximately where they would be, then went to the outside of the house and fetched the cables. Each of the cameras has a sticker where holes need to be drilled to mount on a house. So that means apply the sticker, drill the holes, and then mount the camera. What i did after this is to adjust the camera while yelling at my wife. I strongly suggest that you want until later to do this. Hook the camera up, and its going to work. If you did your test earlier you'll know if its working. Get the cable runs completed first. Adjustment of the cameras is far easier if you download the app and do it that way. . Once you get all of the cameras mounted, i went back to the nvr until and performed the setup of the app. I was hesitant of the app due to the permissions, but it really works well. After i have the until fully plugged in and the app downloaded, just scan the qr code (via upnp) and you can get to the app. Once you can view the cameras then go back and try to adjust them. The key here is adjust both of the axis and move it where you want. I was a bit dumb on this and didn't realize you could twist the camera around a circle and move it left to right. Figured that out of the 3rd camera. So stick it wherever you want, its easy to adjust. Do this for all of your cameras, then go back to the nvr and finish the setup. . So whats bad about it? the software is pretty bad. You want to type something? haha sucker, hope you enjoy using a mouse to click letters on an alphabet. You want to set a password. Haha sucker hope you enjoy only using digits. What kind of garbage is this? its pitiful that you can't use a password. The network wizard is really easy to setup the cameras, but with typing with a mouse it makes it very tedious. The wizard will also detect any other cameras running network video protocols and attempt to add them. It didn't work for me at all (more on that later). Once you finish your initial setup you can go to the cameras and setup the names, zones to watch, alarm/alert settings and the like. . I played around with the alarm settings with some email and some pictures, and found that it is less than desirable. Another reviewer said that the cameras themselves do not do any motion detection, its the nvr software. We found that its far too sensitive and sends too many emails to make it useful. I was hoping to find a sweet spot to set it off for someone that was close to the house, but haven't found that just yet. Also at distance, i have found that the pictures are not clear enough. The fact that it comes in at the price it does, i can't complain much. But some higher resolution would be great. . Last shot and a big subtraction is the ability to add other cameras. It would be great if you could add other cameras to this nvr via the network and to watch them over the feed. But i can't get it to work. Documentation is very sparse on this, and the closest i found to it was off of a home depot site. Basically its supposed to automatically detect them and add them if you supply the user name and password. I tried this many times with no success. I was even so desperate that i tried to update the firmware to see if it would work, which resulted in an nvr failure. I had to email the company support and had to send the unit back. They did supply a replacement unit so good on them. But i did have to send it back and that took some time. . Overall i dont regret purchasing it, and i don't regret it at the price. Bang for the buck its a lot of piece of mind. I wish it had a larger hard drive. I wish it had better resolution. I wish it had better software. But getting all those things would certainly come with a higher price. Maybe in the future i'll look into a higher end camera + nvr system as i've already got some cables ran. But for now i'm good. Hopefully this helps anyone else on the fence.

Finally got around to installing this a month after i purchased it. Mistake on my part because now it is out of return/replacement period. System works as advertised with the exception of one of the cameras nightvision not working well as pictured in the screenshot. Everything else worked great but i am displeased with the nightvision not functioning on one of the cameras

. Alexia, Texas

I got these to use at home. They were easy to set up. The picture quality is good but not great. If you know who the person is, fine, but it would be difficult to identify someone from the video. . Pros. - easy to set up and worked right out of the box. - night vision works pretty well. - camera angles are tight, you can only adjust/move them with the provided tool. . Cons. - interface is awkward, and you have to keep entering a password by clicking around with a mouse, and it's difficult to wade through playback looking for something. - no sound. The descriptions mentioned toggling sound, and the box is wired for sound, but the cameras do not have microphones. - not expandable. 4 cameras is all you can have. - picture quality is not the best. - cameras are kind of big and obvious

Update: bought in jan. 2015 and still working more than 2 1/2 years later. . I did a lot of research before buying this unit and am very happy with the quality and the setup was easy. The service line also is great since i've had a few questions since i purchased the unit. I bought an audio cord so i could hear audio in addition to the video. Audio only works on one camera location. I had some young vandals come to my house shortly after installing these cameras and i called the police and showed them the pictures. They found the two vandals nearby and the camera images were so clear the police asked what brand of cameras i had. . Update 2018: only two cameras of the four original ones still worked. Got one replaced a month later by amcrest and just bought a second one to replace another bad camera. Both replacements were 1080p cameras, better than the 720p i had before. But in talking to tech support they were inept in figuring out problems and making software adjustments. They must have changed tech people since originally it was top notch. Very disappointed amcrest has slipped on tech support and lost people knowledgable and willing to really help. The people they have now are unreasonable and do not listen when you ask them about an issue. Maybe it's a language barrier but they treat customers like they're stupid and have attitude.

Y. Donna, North Carolina

Happy with purchase although i wish i had bought the higher resolution and more channels. We bought the 720p 8 channel model. There was an unknown vehicle in our driveway about 20 feet away from the camera and the license plate was not clear. Be aware that a monitor is required and not included. It was easy to install but the program could be more intuitive. Setting changes such as the date after daylight savings have to be changed on the unit itself rather than on the website or they will not take. The website says that changes are saved but they are not. We bought a second unit with 4 channels for a rental property and our tenant has not been able to get the app to work on his android phone. We had no problem with our iphones.

S. Kimberly, Haute-Normandie says

Have to give them 3 stars. They are great for what they do. The simple installation and technology involved such as being able to view the live feed from your phone. The only complaint and its a big one is that from a distance you cant view fine details such as license plates.

E. Mable, South Australia

I read a lot of reviews etc looking for the right system for me. I planned on getting a second system if i liked it for another section of my property. I received the item and a word of note: plug the whole system in and do a functional test before installing. I did not, only to find the dvr had no video out on either hdmi or vga. Tech support was awesome. They have an online chat function for tech support and when the frustration for the tech of the system not functioning correctly set in, he responded with a telephone call. Ultimately i received a defective unit and had to process a warranty claim which is a slow process, but amcrest has been great in their communication and they did cover the shipping for the return. A word of caution. One of the troubleshooting steps was opening the unit to do a reset on the pcb board. It appeared the date of the unit was manufactured in 2014 which means this unit has been sitting on the shelf for 2 years - disappointing. I await the new unit arrival to see if it will work. 2 weeks later and i received the new unit and it works as it should.

J. Josephine, West Berkshire says

It serves the purpose of a surveillance camera. It sends email with capture images etc. It was very easy to install and configure. However, the motion capture sensitivity is something that requires alot of adjustment. . I should have done more research before going with this setup. Given the chance, i would opt for the higher resolution system.

H. Whiteman, Rotherham

Excellent system fairly clear picture just keep in mind if you want hd quality purchase a 720 or 1080 system this one will still be a bit grainy but good for the price. This system lost 2 stars in my book because of how complicated it was to set up the remote access app and because the system comes with an hdmi cable with no possibility of using it unless you first connect with a vga cable and go in the settings and set the resolution to 1080. This makes no sense if it won't work out of the box with the hdmi why not include a vga cable? so i had to go out and purchase a vga for a very over priced amount and then i had to go to a friends house and borrow an old computer monitor. Vga displays are obsolete to most people in an age of laptops and tablets. To avoid future customers from having this issue i hope they change this setting in a firmware update.

C. Beale, Redcar and Cleveland says

Works good enough. The cooling fan makes quite a bit of noise. Louder than i anticipated. Wish i had purchased a unit with higher resolution. Had a connector and a cable that were defective right out of the box. Amcrest replaced it immediately. After several months the hard drive crapped out. Amcrest sent me a new hard drive under warrantee. Fairly quickly too. All has been working well since. Would buy from amcrest again, but not this unit. I'd go with a higher resolution version. Hopefully a less noisy unit also.

D. Candy, Oklahoma

Do not get the domes unless you only want to see in the day time or 5 feet in front of a light source. They do not see the same as the bullets at all. Plus the rings that screw down for mounting are a mother f'er to get off and on. They feel like you're grinding rocks while turning it. And no i did not cross thread them but that is what they feel like. And the fan is a little loud for what it is. Nothing rediculous but you can hear it

V. Cindy, Bedfordshire says

I ordered this system about 2 weeks ago, started having issues with the cameras randomly losing signal and displaying video loss signal. The only way to get the cameras back online is to reboot the system, but you have no clue of when this occurred so the system is rendered useless. I tried everything, and with support came to the conclusion that i must have had a defective dvr system. I returned it, reordered it, installed it, and again am facing the same problems. I will try one last time to completely isolate the system, which i am certain that will not help bc the wiring isn t the problem. If that doesn t work. I will be switching to a different system!

M. Sherry, Texas

I bought this system due to good reviews and price. I also wanted a wired system in case i had issues with distance from unit to cameras. The hardware setup was easy. I did run the wiring myself and it took some time, but at least i won't worry about signal problems. Now, the software was another story. I tried to configure the dvr and system settings per the instructions. It did not work. The instructions would have been better if they showed step by step how to do each setting. It assumed you knew more about it stuff than the average guy. I spent 24 hours on and off playing with it. I was ready to send the system back when i found a link on online store for professional help. I contacted one of the listed companies and paid them $70 to remotely log into my computer and set the configuration. The it guy who does security systems as a full time job even said it was not that easy. But after two hours he had it all working well. If you are not knowledgeable about these system pay the money and save the headache. So far after four days i like what i have for the price i paid. Day or night it looks good.

. Hayward, Wisconsin says

Buy the 720p version instead. Much better quality for about the same price. Amcrest is a great company and i like the product.

A. Lewis, Maryland

So far it's been okay. I like the footage this provides, but unfortunately there is one camera i've changed twice that is on one opposite end of the house that captures light from a street light in front of my home which i think keeps it from changing to night vision. I've almost given up and have left it for now. Haven't even tried dealing with customer service or anything. Maybe i'll consider doing an update once i commit to find out the issue.

O. Monique, Alaska says

Really like the quality of the camera resolution and the actual hardware has been great. I have two 8 camera systems in my retail store and i wish that both of them were these amcrest systems based on the image quality. My other unit is a swann. . While the swann unit has had it's fair share of issues, we've had to get two replacements. Setting up the software and getting it enabled for remote viewing has been fairly easy and it's supported on my phone, tablet and over the network. It's a great feature and i love having the access. . The amcrest unit i purchased i have never been able to get the remote viewing to work. I've tried several times to enable and set it up. I've made several calls to tech support and have never been able to get it resolved. Every time we've dealt with amcrest support too, it's honestly been big disappointment and not very helpful. We've had them hang up on us. We've had them tell us they would schedule a callback the following day and never do so. We've left messages with no callback. And then when we have had them on the phone they were not very helpful or had any ideas on how to work through the network issues. . I'd give this product a solid 5 stars if i could just get the remote viewing to work. I've essentially given up on the idea since installing it month ago and am just living without it.

N. Meyer, Cornwall

I guess i can sum the whole upcoming review up with the old saying: "you get what you pay for. " oh, and the modern corollary to that saying: "someone has to subsidize the freeloaders who write the 'unbiased and honest reviews. '" this is a decent camera system. But, i broke my rule of never purchasing anything that utilizes paid reviews, and this lapse in judgment meant adding a month to completely install the system. . Three of the four "bullet-type" cameras worked as intended, the fourth would not shift into "night mode" when the lighting got low, so we exchanged it. The remote was also doa. Thankfully, we tested the cameras before crawling through the attic and installing them. The seller was very nice about exchanging our defective components, but we spent nearly a month sending the defective merchandise back, and waiting for the new parts to arrive. I guess i'd rather have everything arrive and be ready to use. I guess you have to receive it for free to get a fully-functioning set on the first try. . This set ships with (theoretically) everything you need to get the system set up and functioning. The four cables that connect the cameras to the dvr are all 60 feet long; if you have a large house or will be locating the dvr in a room that's not near the center of your home, you'll need longer cables, which aren't inexpensive. The hardware that's included for the actual installation of the cameras is made of some sort of cheap and mysterious chinesium alloy. The head of the screws strip readily, and the heads of several of the screws were completely stripped off. So, a trip to the hardware store was necessary before we could finish the installation. . Once the installation was complete, programming the cameras was pretty easy. The cameras can be adjusted individually with regards to sensitivity, and they can be adjusted to be more or less sensitive during different times of the day. Each camera has a matrix that allows the user to turn the motion detection on or off in a specific area of the field-of-view. This feature is handy if there are trees that move with the wind, or if there's a swimming pool where the waves will trigger the motion detection alarm. The user can also turn the motion detection alarm on or off; if it's set to "on" there will be a beep from the dvr unit whenever the motion detection is triggered. Once the settings are dialed in correctly, this feature is very helpful! . . The cameras have a day and night mode. The day mode is in full-color, and uses natural light; the night mode is in black and white, and utilizes the light emitted by the ir lamps that surround the lens of the camera. Both modes work surprisingly well, the ir does allow the user to see fairly far, and the close-up picture is actually quite detailed. Overall, the quality of the cameras is really good, especially for an entry-level system. . Once the system is connected to the internet, the user can view the cameras remotely via the smartphone apps (both ios and android), or via the website on a pc or mac. This is a nice feature that allows the user to view the cameras live, or past footage without needing to be at the same location as the cameras. . Once we got over the initial hiccups and had the entire system installed, we were pretty happy with it. One star off because it's not expandable, and another star off because it took a month to get the complete system to us after needing to exchange defective parts. It was very easy to install and its use is quite intuitive. I'm glad that we didn't pack it up and send it back after i realized that the seller utilizes paid reviews.

. Nicole, Leicester says

The system is a good i must say however i only gave it three stars for the following reason. . The features are limited. . This system does not allow you to lock specific channels from users. . This was installed at an organization where there is rent space. Landlord wanted to have each client to have their own login and be able to access specific cameras as not all cameras should be accessible by everyone who has a login, however this system does not allow for that configuration. . With that said, overall the system is a good one as it is user friendly, compact and neat and also comes with a remote and batteries. I have had no issues installing it, it works great.

G. Alberta, Michigan

Good cameras but software and tech support is a problem. Picture is clear. Hardware setup was simple (plug and play) but setting up remote viewing was another story. The included instructions don't help. Actually tells you to go to youtube to get more info. After about an hour i was able to review remotely on my phone and tablet. Everything was fine but after 4 weeks, i couldn't view remotely. It then took about 4 weeks of phone calls and emails to tech support before i finally got someone i could understand and who could make sense of what was happening. The final explanation was that the problem was that i was using a wifi extender and that sometimes causes a problem even though he didn't know why. We then set up port forwarding and i can now view through the ip address.

Z. Anonymous, Utah says

The cameras work great. I have my doubts about the dvr. I purchased two systems. The first would not power up so i returned it. The exchange took way too long (6+ weeks) as the company was out of replacements. I am considering returning the second dvr as the cooling fan is way too loud. When working properly the system seems to work as advertised. Turning on the motion detection functionality is a challenge.

X. Guest, Colorado

A couple of things: the reviews are for all the amcrest products not just the one i purchased, the 960h. So if you get excited about 1000 + reviews, look closer. I bought it because of the reviews and the pictures of the night vision. Found out that was taken from the 1280p model. Set the system up and make sure you get the software to work before you install it. I almost had to put mine back in the box and return it. The first problem i had was during the initial set up. I cant get the security settings to allow this device to send emails from my gmail or yahoo accounts. I had to lower my security settings in my email and still having problems with that. Next was the mobil app. I loaded the pro version and could not get it to link up. If this happens don't spend to much time messing around with the network settings on the dvr. I loaded the basic app and was able to get it to work but wasted several hours watching videos to only uninstall the one i installed on my phone and reinstall the amcrest link basic. The pro version sets up exactly the same way, not sure why it didn't work. Thankfully the image quality is very good both at day and night. I love the system. I would recommend taking all the video wire off the spool before you run it through rafters or where ever you are going to put them and run your hand over the cords to erase the cord memory. This is done by lightly pulling the cord through your hand. Because it is tightly wound on a small spool the cord memory causes the cord to pinched if you are running it any distance you will have knots or even damage the wire. I bought another 120' and it was pretty hard to run with all the twists in it. The 60' were worse. If i had taken them off the spool first it would have been much easier. . This should be a 5 star product. The instructions do not help if something isn't right. The videos are basic and helpful if there is a problem. It has taken me 8 hours to relocate my internet modem, run the wires into the ceiling and out to the ends of the house through the attic. I expected this would be a permanent install and be usable for quite some time. Its a great value, i don't see the need to have higher resolution. Its very nice at night, just what i wanted. A lot of work with the cords to do it right.

T. Courtney, Thueringen says

Took me a while to get this out of the box and set up, but now that i have the default password does not work. I looked it up and others have had this issue and called customer service and received a "superpassword", whatever that is. I don't think my unit is new if the default doesn't work. So far i am not happy at all with my purchase. Also there's a vent on the side where it looks like a fan is supposed to go but no fan is present. I noticed this because the unit gets incredibly hot. I already installed the cameras otherwise i'd just send it back. Hopefully i can get my "super password" and start changing the settings. Its ridiculous that if i needed to review a recording that i can't even access my dvr new out of the box. If its even recording at all that is.

W. Bullock, Lorraine

Terrible terrible software. Not compatible with chrome browser and you won't be able to watch playback in internet explorer either. It just shows you a black screen. . I had to contact ambrest tech support to see why one channel on the dvr keeps on going black randomly, and the only way to get the video feed back is to power cycle the device. It was not an issue with the camera or cables as i swapped the camera's around, but only channel 1 shows a black video feed until i reboot. Amcrest tech support suggested that i can try "slapping the cable gently, and the camera too. ". . Nvr interface is horrible. You cannot connect a keyboard to type, so you have to use a mouse and slowly click on the onscreen keyboard to type in your admin password. Clicks sometimes do not register, so you must click very very slowly and watch the screen to ensure that it registered your mouse click. . 3mp camera quality is decent, too bad the software is horrible and i seem to have a faulty dvr.

. Annette, Bromley says

System works okay. The problems that i have encountered are as follows. The night vision switch in each camera were all faulty. They would turn on the ir leds but the camera would stay in daytime mode. I discovered this by purchasing and installing a direct replacement camera. The replacement worked correctly. I then replaced the other 3 cameras as well. Once that was remedied, i decided to add a wireless ip camera to the system. It would search and find the network camera but it would not display the video. It displays it as off-line despite the fact i can see the camera online with my cell and tablet. Amcrest cs tells me they are working on a solution. The third issue is one of audio. It claims to have audio abilities but after purchasing microphones, it would not work and again, amcrest cs informs me that feature is also faulty and that they are working on it. . I guess you get what you pay for. . I purchased the 960h system on online store. I've bought 4 replacement cameras, an additional ip camera and microphones all to little avail. I should have just bought a better quality brand with better technical support. . Live and learn as they say. . Buyer beware!

You should really want video surveillance to act as a deterrent, especially for your home. But if you are trying to "solve a crime, " you probably want to buy the hd system. In broad daylight, outside of a range of about 15 feet, you can probably identify someone you already know. You can tell color, size, height, gender, etc. Faces will not be very clear though. You will never be able to read a license plate if needed. At night, the ir looks pretty good but not great. System setup is fairly easy. In my case, i used an attic to run the wires from outside to a central location for the receiver. I specifically purchased a kindle fire to travel with for remote viewing of the camera system. Should have read the reviews about the amcrest view lite app because it doesn't work on. Kindle fire tablet. If you are investing in camera surveillance, considering the effort (or extra cost) to install, you may want to buy a better system. That means more expensive. You may be dissatisfied with the picture clarity of this system when it's all said and done.

Over all it's nice, good features, picture quality is good, mobile app is good. Buuuuuuut. . I've had this for less than a year and so far i've had to replace the following. - dvr has been replaced 3 times. - two cameras have been replaced (they sent me the wrong color 3 times). - i've had the camera and dvr power supply box replaced twice. - the most annoying was when a camera cable went bad and i had to run the line again across the house. . Tech support is over seas. I've waited as long as 40 minutes to talk to someone, 3 days to get an email reply. . I'd say pick your battles. It's a good value but looking back at all the time i've spent on the phone, replacing things and having the system down for weeks trying to get a replacement the value starts to go away. . I think once the warranty runs out on this i'll be looking for other options. Maybe the same company but a higher end product but who knows. I'm not super impressed.

Well i bought this 9 months back when i bought my new house, finaly instaled today, video looks nice , clear wide angle but i am very disappointed that the cameras are not audio equipped, wtf , the dvr has audio in and out but cameras dont? most systems ive used in the past allow audio from at least 1 camera and all cameras were capable , not sure what good video is without audio in a residential use. . Also apears to be a zoom function that does not work with these cameras? and pan function? again wtf

L. Joanna, Nebraska says

Initially, i was thrilled with the camera system. However, we have had it less than a year and are experiencing total video loss. Nothing happened. They just went out at 8:16pm last night. We did not have a power surge. No one was messing with the unit. The unit is plugged into a battery back-up surge protector system, which checked out. All connectors were checked as this appears to be a power supply issue to the cameras as the dvr and monitor are working. I might give it a pass if i could get any help, but i have been on hold for over an hour now without speaking to one person and i actually have other pressing things in my life to take care of. The product sells with a promise for support -one that i have yet to experience other than excessive wait times (i consider wait time a part of customer service). I don't know if i will ever get through and if this issue can't be resolved, the unit is worthless. If i can't get through, then the problems are reliability of the unit. Obviously one would demand to have reliability with a security system. The second issue is lack of effective customer support. I understand that amcrest has videos and youtube videos, but that is not the fix for everything. If someone can't pick up the line, then either there are many issues with these units and their support staff is overwhelmed or they have not hired enough people. . Update: i got through eventually to a very abrupt tech support person that said to unplug the system to reset it for a half an hour, which should work in over 90% of cases. He said if that didn't work to call back. I told him i was on hold already for over an hour. He didn't seem to care at all. So, the call was disconnected. I proceeded to unplug the unit for the half hour. Guess what? it didn't work and i have called and am on hold.
