Circle Disney – Parental Controls Filters Your Family S Wireless Devices (circ001) 129

Review for disney parental controls filters

Price was $99.00. I'm a father of four teenagers, a husband, and a technologist, and a strong advocate with my extended family and community for circle with disney. I've spent the last decade and 1/2 looking for ways and methods to better control device usage in my home, and of lately, how to best protect my children from the myriads of inappropriate things that lurk on the internet. Circle is a phenomenal tool for parents and guardians who would like to have some control of what content children are exposed to, and to better manage and limit device usage and screen time. In my opinion its greatest strength is that you do not have to be a technologist like me to configure, manage, and monitor the devices in your family's network. Its simple, very intuitive mobile interface puts this level of management in the hands of mothers and fathers with little to no technical aptitude, in the ease of three to four steps on their cell phones, without minimally compromising the feature richness that puts that full control in our hands. For the three months we have had circle in our homes, conversations at the dinner table have become a lot richer as devices are easily paused to capture the attention of our very connected teens, bed time has become more predictable, as schedules can now be better enforced, while allowing for some flexibility on weekends, and when, in those rare occasions when behaviors must be corrected, nothing is easier than a simple pause, to help tempers cool off, and reset. Excellent work circle team, just excellent! . . Circle with disney

Foreword

I like this product a lot. The app to control it (runs on iphone) is simple and easy to figure out. My chief complaint is lacking some resource-level controls. There are certain applications that check in on a regular basis all the time. It's not possible to exclude those from online time calculations or bedtime restrictions. The software only allows domain level restrictions. . The automatic application of bedtimes and time limits is awesome. I love that you can quickly and easily pause a device, or a whole house of devices. . For my work, it's useful that i can exclude devices from being managed so they function all the time as they should. The Best disney parental controls filters ( Nov 2019 ) | Circle Media-Wireless Accessory Review Included Circle with Disney - Parental Controls and Filters for your Family’s Wireless Devices Manage every device: circle recognizes and manages every device on your home wifi.. Filter content: set individual filter levels by age (pre-k, kid, teen, and adult) for each member of your family.. Circle With Disney - Parental Controls And Filters For Your Family S Wireless Devices Review (circ001)

This device is amazing, it has enabled me to parent what is coming into our home, and at what times it comes. The kids only needed to see the internet paused on time, and they usually get moving when i tell them that i am going to pause the internet. I love that i can put time limits on specific services, and specific devices. I recently had problems because it was blocking my apple tv from seeing the itunes store. Placing this device on the unmanaged list fixed it all. Love my apple tv and would recommend it to everyone -T. Jessica

Circle Disney Parental Controls Wireless Wireless

PROS
  • Very cool - powerful and flexible. Only works for internal internet access without the accompanying monthly service unfortunately, it lacks the ability to create multiple profiles per shared device or limit access to apps without internet usage.
  • We have had our circle for about a week. It was super easy to set up, only took a few minutes. So far it's been great. I have used it to limit my kids time online and on certain apps like youtube. I also like the awake and bedtime feature. Wifi automatically turns off for them. You can pause the wifi for the whole house or specific devices. It also show what websites they have gone to. Wish i had known about it sooner!
CONS
  • I wanted to love this product, and the idea of it is perfect for times like today (with social media, tech). However, when connected to my wifi it would stop the internet/wifi from working which was frustrating. I wanted to give circle the benefit of the doubt, and i moved it directly next to my modem & main router, but the issue still occurred. What was confusing was that my guest wifi (same network; mesh network) worked fine. Regardless, i will have to wait and see if another generation or firmware update comes out to fix the bugs & then i'll give it another go. In the meantime, i'll be returning this in case that does not happen. . Some other comments, i do agree that figuring out which device was whose & what was a bit of a pain, but matching up the mac addresses seemed to work & rename the device in circle. I also wish circle showed more detail such as what websites or what youtube videos are being watched versus just "30 mins youtube". Again, i hope this improves with the next gen or updates
  • Final update: i really want this to work. And when i first set it up it worked. It was easy. Final update: well things didn't work out for me. I'm not sure it was circle's fault or not. They were eager to solve the problems. The head of support worked with me for days trying to solve problems. About two weeks later i had a complete internet shutdown on my provider's side. Was the problem with the provider all along? i don't know. I just bought a new router that had some parental controls and free app-based controls from anywhere in the world i went that route (no put intended) instead. I would say - give it a try. With online store's amazing return policy you have nothing to lose. When it worked it was very smooth. Pros: detailed control over every device in the home. -support is polite but sometimes not up to speed. -set up was relatively simple - still some bugs but they are working those out. . Cons: device doesn't adapt to real life problems wel. -single button control works well on phones not on routers. -some information is very difficult to find on website. -support is on pacific time - matching schedules is a problem. -real time support, therefore, is sketchy. . Great people, great idea, worth a try.
  • I would probably wait until they have more support for this. It's a great idea, and works fairly well, but for the price it should have been a little more polished out of the box.

disney parental controls filters Circle with Disney - Parental Controls and Filters for your Family’s Wireless Devices (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

This is a must have! i have three boys 10, 14 and 15 and it has been a great way to limit what they can see, when the internet turns off/turns on each day, providing the ability to turn off certain apps (netflix, snapchat, ect. ) when they should be studying for exams, ect. It is easy to set up and love the way you can pick the age appropriate settings for each child. I also pay the $10/month for the circlego and have been generally pleased with. In general, this devise provides guardrails for kids who aren't ready for the full internet and social media. I have recommended to many friends and will continue to do so.

Click to see NoticeCircle Disney - Parental Controls Filters Your Family S Wireless Devices (circ001)"This may be the best purchase we have made all year. Much to our children's disappointment, it has given us the chance to easily monitor what they encounter online. We are able to pause their access when need be and grant it back when earned. We can reward them with additional online time or extend their bedtime access. My favorite part is that we are able to limit time or designated sites, such as youtube. It puts the control in our hands and helps us to keep our kids safer in the online world. With no monthly or recurring fees, this is a winner in our books! disney got it right again!"

(0) Question: Would this work in a classroom to manage the devices on wifi?

(1) Question: Our kids use my wife's mac desktop. would this be used with that machine, or am i better setting up user accounts on that mac?

(2) Question: Is this a one-time purchase or is there a subscription model?

It's been very cool so far, sometimes even a little too restrictive. It needs to coincide with the fire kids tablet restrictions and with the xbox age restrictions. Other than that, it's really great to have another piece of mind for safety with a 14 and 7 year old at home. There was a little hiccup with alexa dot, but once i moved it to the 'unmonitored' section, alexa worked fine again. Pairing it with mothershp and choremonster has been awesome! it really gives the kids incentives to do the chores and it's fun to come up with rewards together to shoot for.

Great technology, now i can restrict content and set individual bed times for each kid. And i can shut them down with the pause button pending them finishing their chores. A great way to pull it in with the devices.

Love the ability to manage devices and the built in filter works great

K. Kelly, Illinois

Where have you been all my life? this device has made my control of the internet and all the devices on it easy and painless. I love this product and highly recommend it!

M. Crawford, Louisiana says

I rave about circle all the time now to my friends. I work in technology and this is a marvel of functionality and simplicity. I am proficient to mange a router and networking options, but this is like magic. You don't need to change anything on your network. We were up and running with all our existing networks and profiles for the 9 and 12 year old boys and my wife and i in about 5 minutes. . I read another reviewer mention that the best plan is to get a home day for everyone and add exceptions to all the minecraft servers or game servers that you want them to be able to still access.

H. Matherly, Tower Hamlets

As our kids are more and more exposed to the net and you tube and google etc, we wanted a way to screen out the things that you can eventually end up on in google or you tube. Our kids are at the age when they do some homework on the web and have laptops and ipads etc. I had heard this device was coming out and a family friend told us they had one. I immediately picked one up and installed it yesterday. Set up was pretty easy. We have a tri band router so the first thing i did was change all the keys to the different bands just case. Also we had 22 devices hitting the router so you have to know the wifi mac address of each device if you have not named it. We had most of our named since i divided up the three bands for our devices. I then set up profiles for everyone. I used the teen settings for our kids although they are not quite teens yet and tweaked some settings and put time limits on you tube and of course ad blocking and safe google search. For my wife and i, i used the adult setting but still blocked adult stuff etc. Some devices are on the home profile such as online store echo, two network printers, out samsung smart tv, apple tv etc. . I tested the search by googling things that they should not see and it worked very well. I also tried to go to sites that are blocked from their access and they did not come up. I also tried the pause feature and that worked as well. So you can feel a bit safer know thing that they will not end up on a graphic site accidentally or intentionally. . You can also use it when not connected to the network, for example to pause it while away from home. I am sure that more updates will bring more features but for some protection for your kids and allow you to monitor the sites they are visiting etc, i recommend the circle device to those who have the needs i described above.

L. Delgado, Indiana says

This thing is amazing. Many of the concerns from the earlier reviews have been addressed. The app design is simple and awesome. It is easy to use and beautiful. You can see every device in the house easily and all of the internet sites visited. You can turn off the internet at the flick of a switch. I don't think the "timer" is super reliable or useful because a lot of time is spent on apps that are "always on" and i have other issues with how they calculate the time. But overall the app is incredible. My biggest complaint is i'd love to see a more robust way to identify and track devices since i often get notifications about devices but have a hard time figuring out what they are. Also it would be good to have a simple way to track shared devices (like the tv) and most importantly, i'd like to be able to easily figure out which of my child's 4 devices he used for the websites visited or time spent. (the ugly way around this is to set up each "device" as a profile, instead of assigning devices to a human profile. But that causes other problems). . All in all, this device is incredibly powerful, simple and beautiful. And they seem to be regularly updating the app and firmware to make it better - which is basically everything you can ask for.

I. Guest, Blackpool

This is a great idea and it mostly works great. If you have an xbox or wii it doesn't count the time on the one logged into the device. The time goes to the user the xbox or the wii is assigned too. I was told today that the programmers are working on an upgrade to account and place the correct time to the one logged in. The tech support people are great. Very impressed! i'm an it guy myself so i do appreciate them a lot. There was some issue with the circle that required rebooting the router a lot more often than before the circle was on line. Not sure if that was the circle or the router. My thought is the circle conflicted with the router and locked up all devices until a reboot was completed. Overall, we like it but can't wait til the update to account for xbox login time per user.

X. Williams, Tennessee says

Probably one of the best investments i've made in the past year. Setup was a breeze and it has been a great way to manage internet access for my three kids (all under 11). I've used different internet filtering systems in the past (open dns, etc. ); however, this has been the best performing i've seen and i love the ability to setup website specific time-limits. Highly recommend. . Note: this will only manage devices while they are connected to your home wi-fi network. You have to download a separate app to manage cellular devices, and it's a bit clunky at this point.

Q. Candy, Northumberland

My kids hate the circle. Does that tell you what you need to know? . . It took me several tweaks before i had my circle set up correctly, but now, two months into using it, i have come to really love it. . For reference, we live in a large house with one router and two extenders (which only means that there are multiple "networks. ") i have four kids, and their ages range from 7 to 14. They have iphones, ipods, ipads, 2 xbox consoles, playstation3 and playstation4. I have tried several different flavors of net-nannies and i have set up parental controls on several different routers over the years, but nothing has ever been worth the hassle of it all until this circle. This gives me more flexibility and customization than anything i've ever used, and it is also visual (on my iphone) so i don't need to be a computer programmer to make sense of it. Really, this thing is easy. And if you need help to get it set up properly, just ask on their facebook page because they are incredibly committed to helping people. I've never seen this degree of helpful facebook customer service before, on any kind of product. . The beautiful part of circle is that every device that is connected to the internet automatically appears in the devices for your circle. Some of them are easy to identify (e. G. "jimmy's ipad") but some are more difficult (e. G. "humax device" or t0108000357180). I started with the things i could positively identify, and then the rest became obvious over time. Anytime a device joins the network, circle will give you a notification. So, if you unplug and replug your online store fire stick, or put your iphone into airplane mode and then switch it back, you'll be able to identify and label the device in your circle. . Once i figured out what each of my devices was, i assigned each one to a person. If the device was used by all of us (like the tv in the living room) i assigned it to e (for everyone). One son has an iphone, ipad, xbox, and another child has itouch, ipad, and mac. Another one has a mac, an ipad, and an xbox. The fourth one only has an ipad and a fire device. Now, with devices set for each child, i can pause one kid's internet (on each of his devices) without messing up all of the other kids' internet. Also, if my son is allowed to use his computer (for homework) but not his xbox, i can pause only the xbox, and leave everything else connected. (also, if i have said, "no xbox for you! one week! " but then forgotten to actually put a pause on the xbox. I can pull it up on my phone and see if he has turned it on. ) likewise, if i have gone to work and forgotten to turn someone's internet back on, i can easily correct that and get him back in business. The best part is that i can do all of it with an app on my phone. I can do it from the front yard, the bank, the airport, or from another state. Instantly. For me, this is where circle really earns its stars. . Simply stated, circle will allow me to pause the internet for the entire house (say for dinner). Or, it will allow me to pause the internet for one child (who's grounded) or for all the kids individually (until each one gets homework finished - and then individually i can give wifi back to them as they earn it. ). . For content, there are filters. Using the settings for filter level, i have set up my youngest as kid, and my three older ones as teen. I am able to completely disable youtube for my 7 year old, who was pretty addicted to disney collector and family fun pack before circle came along. On the teen filter, i have the option to shut down many apps individually (e. G. Instagram, hbo, twitter, tumbler, snapchat, youtube). I can give some or all or none to each kid, individually. Separately, there is a custom option on each filter which will allow me to add in any specific website they are visiting that i don't want them to. If i click on insights (and this is on each child's profile) i can see every website he has visited today and how much time he spent there. . Time limits have proven to be my ace in the hole for discipline. My young teenager is now on a plan where if he doesn't cause any disruptions in the house he gets to maintain his internet time, and if he gets in trouble for something he loses an hour. Wow - what a changed kid! it is effortless for me to change his limit (i just pull up the app on my phone) so he knows that i won't get busy and forget. For once, i have a parenting tool that is super easy for me to wield. If he does something sweet, i can bounce him up an hour. It doesn't cost me anything and it actually has a value for him. . Bedtime does just what it says. It shuts down their internet at bedtime without me having to realize the time and run around the house snatching electronics at 7:30, 8:00, 9:00 and 10:00. It allows me to let the big kids have their internet later on weekends, but still have a limit so they don't watch netflix until 2:00 am. Week night bedtime limits can be set at a different time than weekend bedtime limits. If one child always has thursday night projects for school that take him past the regular bedtime, i can remove thursdays from the bedtime limit or turn bedtime off (when he asks me about it) and then back on when he is finished, easily from my phone. . My favorite part of circle is that (now that i have it set up properly) i can easily control each device, or each child's devices from my phone with one or two clicks. I feel like it has given the power back to me. I know that there are sophisticated router setups that are also supposed to do this, but i haven't had luck with any of them. I have read reviews from people saying that they couldn't set it up, or that it crashed the entire system, and i just don't have any idea where they are going wrong, but trust me, they are doing something wrong. . As an aside, the day after i set up my circle, we had a problem with the internet and of course i blamed the circle and unplugged it. Let me tell you that it stayed on. It has a battery inside, so if your kids ever get the bright idea to disable the circle and run amok on the internet, their attempts will be foiled! as it turns out, the problem with the internet was that i hadn't paid the bill (oops! ) and it had nothing to do with the circle. However, i forgot to go back and plug it in (after everything was resolved). It worked for a month before it started sending me messages on my phone that i needed to plug it back in. . Also, with regard to the extenders. I thought that the circle wouldn't work if the kids just moved from the regular router to the extenders and i believed it to be a serious flaw. However, i have since learned that if i pause the device, it doesn't matter which network the kids plug into (because the extenders feed from the actual router). The device will pause regardless of the network name. . One other thing is data on the iphone. There is a plan to control your child's data use, but i have not taken advantage of it. I realized that the myatt app has a place where i can easily disable data, so for my one rebellious child, i just shut down his data when he's at home, and then he is forced to use the wifi, and my limits placed in circle will keep him in check. If i want him to have data (vacation, etc. ) i just turn it back on in the att app. If you child's device has access to data, you will only have so much control over it with circle. . Also, it is true that the ipad will allow you to block some apps and some sites. Circle isn't the only way that you can get the job done. But for me, it has absolutely been the easiest.

I love everything about circle. There are some improvements that could be made on the circle go but this is a new product and the bugs i'm sure are being worked on. I love that i can control the phones see what my kids are on and what they are using while on their phones.

V. Lindsey, Picardie

Love it. Brought sanity back to our house. We have a set schedule that internet comes on in the afternoon, but not until all chores are done. We can be miles away at work and pause or unpause the internet. Kids hate it, we love it.

E. Shirley, Coventry says

We've had our circle hooked up for about a week now. We love it! (well. My wife and i love it. The kids not so much). From reading reviews i was a little worried about some of the specifics in how it worked and if it was going to end up causing more trouble than it was worth but that all proved to be unnecessary. I'm thinking that maybe over the time since it was released they have upgraded the firmware? all i know is that some of the negative reviews mention problems that i haven't seen. So either those folks didn't know how to use certain features or the features were added after the original review was written. We have the circle plugged directly into our router (well, actually it's plugged into a switch that is connected to the router) and haven't noticed any issues with it slowing down our internet. We have two kids in two different age ranges and setting up the specific filter levels was very simple. And within each filter level there are lots of specific settings that you can toggle on or off (ad blocking, safe search, etc. ) initially, i did have to go in and 'allow' a couple different sites that were being blocked by default but that was incredibly easy. Also, we have several different devices that are used by more than one person (kids share an ipad. That kind of thing). I was worried about how we'd deal with that but it hasn't proven to be an issue. You simply go in the app and move the device from one person to another. It takes 5 seconds. Even more than the actual filtering, the time limits was one of the reasons we decided to get this device. Especially since we're going into summer and i was worried about the kids sitting around on their electronics all day if i wasn't paying enough attention. I get a little popup on my phone when one of the kids reaches their preset time limit and the circle cut off the kids internet, this is immediately followed by a "nooooooooo! " from somewhere else in the house. I love it!

I can't emphasize enough how awesome this product is! the setup is simple and there is a customer service line where someone actually answers the phone and helps you! it simply allows you to control access to the internet in your home. I am able to set a total amount of time on the internet for my pre-teen. After the allowed time is up, it simply denies access. I can pause the internet at any time, as a consequence or give additional time for chores or good behavior. It also easily allows me to turn off the internet at night for bedtime. Additionally, i have a complete log of sites accessed so that i can check what is going on during homework time. Not all kids/teenagers have the self- control to self-regulate technology. This is an indispensable tool for our family!

. Paige, North Somerset

In our family we have three kids, ages 8 and twins that are 11 years old. Naturally they also have friends coming over all the time, many of the bringing their "devices" so they can all play minecraft, clash of clanes etc. After using open dns (free) it has become clear we needed something with a better ui, preferably with an iphone app that can remotely control the internet experience. I settled on "circle" and it has now been installed for 2 weeks. Here's the good and bad:. . 1. Installation: as some fellow reviewers pointed out there is no traditional user manual in the package, which makes total sense since the manufacturer does not want to print a "dated" card for a product that by its design will evolve and constantly add new features. So, instead of looking at a printed card you only need to download the free app and follow the easy set-up instructions. Basically it took 15 minutes to set up and add all the devices in the house (couldn't believe we had that many devices. ). However, this is just the beginning. . 2. Configuration: each device must be added to either a "personal profile", "home" or "unmanaged devices" (see screenshot). This is quite logical and very much follows the concepts used on any mac os x or windows computer. On each profile you can then be set with the appropriate filter setting, along with a start time and end day daily. As many reviewers have pointed out it seems very strange that the developer have not added unique start and end times for weekends, this as ios completely supports this functionality. Also the absence of "home work time" versus "play time" is missing. However, i am quite confident these two settings will be added over time as the app development work proceeds. They are the two only truly annoying features. . 3. Setting up exceptions: this is the most tedious part of having a truly well functioning circle experience. I would strongly recommend to make the initial set up on a day when everyone will be home for the full day. After installing circle and adding their device to their profile, sit down with each child and ask them to go to every website, open every game and do anything/everything they want to do on their device. This way you can easily sit next to them and create the "exceptions" they need to the standard filter system. Simply open the highly useful "custom filter" option and add the main url as approved and they are set. This needs to be done for each "profile". Plan on spending the better part of a day adding tons of these "custom filter" exceptions and the kids will embrace the circle instead of having a bad week receiving calls to work where the child is upset. Because the are "blocked" on a harmless site. There is no way around this as unfortunately internet url's never was set up with "pg 13" or "r" ratings etc. . 4. Unmanaged devices & home profile: in our family we have set my wife's and mine cell phone and tablets to be "unmanaged devices", which means there is no block or limitations. The computers in the house are on the "home" profiles as multiple users log on to them and there is no technical way to tell who is on the computer even if they open their own profile on the imac for example (not circle's fault, just technical limitations). . 5. Pause button: this is the "secret sauce" in this product! with the "pause" button you can easily pause the internet for either all managed devices or for an individual profile (all devices attached to this profile will pause). With this powerful tool in my hand (iphone with app) i simply need to say "dinner in 2 minutes, internet is going off when the clock hits 6:15 (for example). Prior to having circle this was a simple threat that was not heard with multiple follow-up threats happening. Now everyone immediately "saves" and logs out of their activity as they know that the internet will indeed be shut off. The kids all despise this new level of control but as parents we smile as we are finally in charge again! press "paus" a second time and internet is back on. . Summary - negative points: the app lacks 7-day individual scheduling of times and the ability to do multiple blocks of time during each day. . Summary - positive points:. Overall this is a tool that every parent should have and i have been wanting for years. If nothing else it gives us control of what is being watched, when and by whom. It also serves as a great way to the kids away from "tablet trance". I told the kids this will stay "on" as long as i am paying for them:-). - the app is very simple and easy to use. - pause button is a "killer app" by itself for parents. - the profile system is logical and nicely laid out. - the hardware is compact, looks nice and features a terrific "backup battery" (kids already unplugged it twice).

I was looking for a way to manage my sons' electronics usage in the summer. During the school year it is easier with activities, but more free time means more screen time. Circle allowed me to take control of the wifi access and set further controls on their devices beyond the ones provided on the devices. . The only down side is that there are not more increments for allowing time. I allow my boys 2 hours, but beyond that they have to earn time and the circle jumps to 3 hours rather than allowing 15 minutes, 30 minutes, etc. I would prefer that. Also, if your child has data freedom then they could sign off wifi and not be subjected to the restrictions. Fortunately at my house mine are mostly wifi users.

Circle with disney - parental controls and filters for your family's wireless devices. . This device is rad! with the simple push of a button from my phone i can end any one of my teenagers worlds as they know it. Muahahahahahah. No chores done? bad grades? smart mouth? buh-bye internet! i also love that i can see what they are doing online, i can control any device in our home including the nintendos, xboxes, smart tvs, etc. Super easy to set up! . . Also worth mentioning is that my kids hate this device! especially my 13 year old daughter. Oh the drama, might catch her on video one of these days, she would be great advertising:) i get them to do a ton more chores. Once they have used up their daily time limit i set they beg for more time and will do just about anything. Comes in handy with spring cleaning here:)

This is definitely helping me monitor my family's internet usage. The only reason i gave it a 4 star instead of a 5 because it is a bit difficult to set up. However, once it is set up, this has made me a lot more comfortable knowing what exactly they can see. I don't think there is a way to set up multiple profiles for each device through this but i am trying to figure that out. I have figured out to make our laptop to kid setting and for all my children, no matter their age, there is 1 profile set up. Either way, this product has given me more internet safety options that are easier to understand for both mac and pc than other products i researched.

Parents, just get this already. . Best cost effective method for seeing what your kids are up to, setting internet connectivity time limits and limiting some app platforms that use the internet. It does need more features, but they just released a lot of good ones. Check out the complete details on their website. . My four girls are young 4-9, but while they are at home, they are guarded. There is also an online option for them as well so you can keep them safe away from your wifi as well. . We have some teens at our house using our wifi as well, if they get onto content they should not, it just sends them to a polite page letting them know they were filtered. As far as i can tell it does not report exactly what they were looking for - but i could be wrong about that. And most of the time, i don't want to know.

Z. Pamela, Franche-Comte says

Extremely easy to setup and to manage. Gives great peace of mind knowing it covers all devices connected to our home internet. It takes literally seconds from my phone to switch the ipad assignment and filter settings from kids mode (with no youtube, social media, etc. ) to my wife or me when necessary. Highly recommend for all parents.

G. Pearson, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

I purchased this a few months ago when it came out and have come to rely on it as much as i rely on my smartphone and the internet. This review will not apply to those who restrict (or think they restrict) their kids access to the internet, but for families with good kids that are allowed some freedom within limits, this might be for you. Without getting into a super verbose review, here are the things that are critical to me:. . 1) my kids are pre-teen and have access to multiple internet connected devices in our home, including computers, iphones, ipads, playstation, xbox, etc. With unfiltered internet they could have been stumbling, even accidentally, into some of the crazy stuff on the internet. As they get older they could seek that stuff out intentionally. Either way i feel much better knowing that all of those devices are subject to the central filtering at all times. 2) related to point 1, my kids have friends over and all of their friends have devices. The first question upon arrival to our house is always "what is the code for the wifi? ". By default all new devices on the wifi are put into the home category on circle and filtered from the bad stuff, so i have a lot less anxiety about what kids visiting my house are doing. The next step is to survey all of my kids' friends' parents to see if they are being as cautious. 3) youtube is the new television. For years all i heard was kids watch too much tv. My kids don't watch tv, they watch youtube. Circle gives me granular and complete control over both types of internet usage and internet usage in general. If i ask one of my kids to do something and they don't because they are on a computer or device, my first move is to pause their internet with circle. It works every time. 4) the bedtime feature works wonderfully and my only issue lately is that too much of my son't middle school homework is required to be done online and he asks for bedtime extensions because he is still finishing the homework. The answer, of course, is that he start his homework earlier, and we are working on that. Who said parenting was easy, right?

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

I think this has the potential to be great! my husband programs software and we have found there are a lot of nuances in the set up process. Use the circle disney crew as a resource. But once it is set up, it is a great tool for limiting time (we did not have a problem with this before but i can see it as a perk), filter the content, filter website and tailor each device to specific settings.

J. Noguera, Rhone-Alpes

I received two circles. The first's firmware wouldn't update, nor connect over it's wifi signal with my phone (which is how the circle is set up), so it was returned. . The second was in a different case, and obviously a different model. It needed no update to the firmware, and the wifi signal and setup was great! very easy to use. . Unfortunately the wifi signal from the stupid thing was so strong that it prevented all devices within our house to even connect to it. *shrugs* so we definitely sent it back. Great idea, not great implementation.

. Carolyn, Haringey says

I thought this would be the answer but it was not. I'll recap my experience, but ultimately, i had to return it because it does not work if you have a wifi extender. Even when i called and asked about it, i was told it would work as long as the wifi extender had the same name and password - which mine does. But it didn't work. Depending on where you are in my house, we have to hook up to the wifi extender because of dead spots. It's not a huge house, but a two-story house and our router has to live in the basement. So if a device is using the extended wifi, i can't pause it. Which is the main reason i wanted this product in the first place. Eventually, my tech-savvy kids would have figured this out. . My other complaint is that it doesn't come with many instructions. So i took a shot in the dark and plugged it in and hoped it would figure itself out. But it wasn't as plug & play as i had hoped. I downloaded the app from the itunes store, but it wasn't working. The tiny booklet that came with inside the package provided some set-up instructions and featured a picture of the app. But it didn't look anything like what i had. I called customer service, who explained that there are actually two apps. The one i needed has a different name - not specified anywhere. Not even on the website. The one i downloaded, which is the one the website sends you to in the itunes store, is actually the paid subscription app. Once i downloaded the app i needed, it worked. But then i discovered the wifi extender problem. So i called customer service again who said it should work (see first paragraph). But, alas, i got tired with all the fiddling and gave up. And the only way i'd be able to manage my daughter's cell phone, once she went off wifi would be through this paid subscription. . In the end, this was not the product i had wished it would be.

T. Kimberly, South Dakota

Don't bother, piece of junk. Claims to be super easy to use, but you basically have to be a complete nerd with lots of free time to get this working. Did not recognize some devices, does not give enough info about most devices so you can figure out what's what. If you have more than one wi-fi feed like the sneaky xfinity guest wi-fi, you can't manage them. If a friend drops by their phone gets added to the devices, and does not leave when they do. If your kids have a phone they will simply use data not the wifi. If your kids are teenagers they will simply go around it. You have to pay circle $10 per month to get in front of their phone and text lines, can probably do this thru the phone company for free.

P. Wilson, Sandwell says

Somewhat of a pain to get set up, and was unable to connect the app on more than one device. But, the kids are angry, so it must be working okay. ; -) the app could use some improvements to add flexibility for shared devices and homework. However, if we are not able to manage from a second device then we will be returning it. Edit: customer service is very prompt and provided tips to connect the app on a second device. We also ran into troubles with battery usage on filtered devices. Customer service was again prompt. But the only solution was to disable filtering for the device. If there was a log file to show blocked sites then it might have been easier to identify which blocked app caused the battery drain.

E. Perez, North Somerset

By design, this gadget tries to dominate your whole network. Any new gadget that shows up will be silently blocked from internet access until you add it to circle. Doesn't seem to have an option for making new devices "unmanaged". But it really should. Highly annoying for guys like me who work from home with a constant stream of new wifi devices. . But apart from that, it delivers and it's stupid-easy to use.

O. Benton, West Virginia says

This product has a lot of potential. One problem i have is figuring out what devices are what when plugging it in. It basically took over everything and shut down our tv and computers when we first started. We had to unplug it. Along those lines, its easy enough for a child to just unplug it and all of the power goes away. I still can't trust this product because it randomly seems to grab devices we don't want/need controlled and shut them down with little to help identify what the item is from the control panel.

Last updated may 27, 2017. . Please note that i am not a 'verified buyer' because i bought my circle before it became available on online store but was prompted by circle to write a review. I periodically update my review to make sure that it is current. . A bit of context. I previously used a router based parental control called skydog. This was by far, the best solution that i have seen, . However, that company was bought out by another company and skydog is no longer supported. Since i was in the market for a new router, i decided to buy circle to augment the very poor parental controls on my new netgear router. The reason that i mention the skydog solution is to point out that what i am requesting below is technically possible, has been done before, and can all be done through the router itself. I have a technical background and have been very careful to not comment on anything that i might want but isn't capable of being done through the software on the circle itself. For example, i don't expect this device - which is network based device - to control offline behavior such as downloaded apps. . Overall:. Circle is an easy to use but basic parental control device. But, i am hopeful that given the support of disney that they will move to improve the device quickly. So i am sticking with them despite the list of things that drive me crazy which i will share below. I have talked to the company at their request and i find them to be quite pleasant to work with. They are very open to hearing feedback (you will actually see the company responding very nicely in the comments of this post). However, i am not sure how feedback is prioritized and i am still struggling more than a year later. . Below, i describe what you can do today and what i think is missing. This might be enough for you. . As a parent, i would want to:. . Control the amount of total time my kids are on the internet each day (true-ish). Circle can allow you to group devices together and to set a time limit for internet access for that pool of devices. This works if each kid has their own set of devices but doesn't work for shared devices like a gaming console. To be honest, i wouldn't expect a router based device to determine which kid is using a single device. . Control the amount of time that my kids access certain categories of internet sites (kinda true-ish but not really). Above, i mentioned the ability to control the total amount of time. Here i am talking about categories of sites such as social media, gaming, videos, etc. Circle does allow you to do this. There are many pre-configured groupings and you can set an individual amount of time for each one. However, each of these time limits work individually. So, you can't say something like "i want my kids to have 90 minutes of "fun" internet time each day which includes gaming, social media, and videos". You would have to give them 30 minutes of each of these which isn't the desired behavior if they wanted to do something like watch a movie. What is sorely missing here is an ability to easily group together activities that you consider "playtime" and other sites that you consider "homework". This means that i have to set times for each individual "fun" activity and if i want to change that time, i have to edit each and every one of them individually. (sigh). . Control my kids ability to access specific sites or categories of sites (true). So, as with the time limits, you can control an individual site or category of sites such that they have no access. This works fine for my purposes but my kids are older so i don't really block them from much. In fact the pre-configured settings were really problematic for us (blocked things that we couldn't figure out why) so we set everything to adult and then just shut off a few important items (porn, gambling). Someone with younger kids might find these controls to be harder to manage because they will need to block more. . Control my kids bedtime (true). Ensure that the internet shuts down at a certain time. Although this might seem like an important feature for little kids. It is pretty important for big kids too. Especially since i often end up going to bed before my teens do. . Shut down internet access for a kid if they are grounded and need a nudge (true). With circle, you can press the "pause" button on the whole house, a single profile, or a single device. This has come in very handy on multiple occasions when i need to "ground" my kids for a couple of hours until they get something done. . Control the internet even when i am away from home (true). I am often at work or even traveling and i like to be able to see what is going on at home and i need to be able to edit the controls from the road. I have a samsung device and although it originally had issues with samsung, it works great now. Just like being home. . Control the internet differently on weekdays vs weekends (true-ish). Circle has had the ability to control the bedtime differently for two blocks of days per week (weekdays, weekends) and more recently has been able vary the amount of time for different activities by weekday and weekend as well. This mostly works. But the ui is bizarre and there are some points of frustration. For example, you can only vary the time controls - you can't only allow an activity on the weekend. The best i can do is to set gaming to 15 minutes during the week (you can't set it to zero). . Provide my kids with extra time as a reward (true-ish). Circle provides the ability to reward your kids with bonus time or even a late bed time. This mostly works except it must be done individually for each and every rule. Again, this goes back to the lack of ability to group together activities into a bucket. . Add controls to any router (true-ish). One nice thing about circle is that you can use it with any router. It isn't it's own router. However, sometime after we got it, circle starting hijacking my second router which has been unbelievably annoying. When new devices are added to circle, they go into a central profile. I leave this profile on pause which keeps the kids from sneaking new devices into the house. (yes, they are that tricky. ) now, even if a device comes onto my second router, it ends up being seen by circle and gets blocked until i move it to a profile with access. This is as designed but not what i would really like. . Ensure that they have playtime at the end of the day after (i hope) that their homework is done. (can only do manually). With circle, internet time is controlled by day. However, that isn't how the world really works. I want my kids to be focused on homework when they come home from school and then only have 'fun' time later in the day. To get around this issue, i manually reward my kids gaming access after they text me to tell me that they are done with homework. This is cumbersome because i have to individually reward gaming, netflix, social media, etc. (again, there is no "fun" bucket). Also there is a small issue in that you must have at least some time allocated to an activity already in order to be able to reward it. So they have 15 minutes of each fun activity by default. . Individual sites are hard to manage. Circle has a handful of sites that you can control time limits on directly. (for example, you can limit facebook to 1hr). However, for other sites that they have not set up. You only have the ability to block the site or not. You can't put a time limit on it. . Age based limits are too inflexible. Rather than providing recommended settings for each age group, circle actually limits the settings that you can set at each age group. So, for example, there are only a few options for control at the pre-k age. And many at the adult setting. So, in order to get more granular control, i had to set up both kids as 'adult' and then tweak down. It would have been much more secure if i could have only added access as necessary. . Closing comments. I really do believe they are trying to improve things. However, i am curious whether they have the resources of disney behind them or just the logo. . There are a million other things that parents might want that i didn't mention in the review. However, i believe that the list above is practical and technically achievable. . My two biggest issues at this point are:. - inability to manage a set of activities in one pool. (i want to group social media, netflix, gaming, and other activities into a single bucket called "fun". - inability to set a time limit of zero minutes. (this effects rewards and weekday/weekend access)

Y. Elizabeth, Telford and Wrekin says

I'm disappointed that this is not working for me. Downloading the app was easy but identifying the various devices on our wifi was challenging and frustrating because of the opaque labeling. There must be some deciphering codes that could be made available to help identify the actual devices we want to add. We had to do a test to figure out which cell phone was for my husband and which for my son so i would only add my son's phone. I got a bunch of emails from the company in the first week of purchase but they were totally unhelpful. The product is limiting the daily time my son can spend on certain websites, such a youtube, based on my selections, but this product is not keeping my son off the internet after the "bedtime" limit. It is grossly underreporting his time on the internet on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. A dashboard with an "insights" category shows "0 mins today" when i know for a fact, my son has been online for nearly 2 hours, as i write this. Not insightful at all! he spent way more than "2 hours online last week, " which is what the app reported. Also, my son decided to switch to using data on his phone to get around the youtube and gaming time limits, so we are back to hiding the phone. I do not recommend.

I love the circle, rewards, or discipline with the click of a button. Does shut down unexpectedly sometimes not a fan of that but overall a great tool for parents

Was a fun novelty item for the first few weeks, but that's about it. If you have wi-fi extenders, it won't work on those extended networks. Kids these days are tech savvy. I'm usually pretty tech savvy myself. Even my 10 year old figured out that if she connects to an extended wifi network, she doesn't have to abide by the 'circle' restrictions. $100 down the tube. Now i have a dust collecting accessory on my desk. 2 stars for my 2 weeks of entertainment and for it having a great concept. Can't give much more than that.

C. Yvette, City of Bristol

Edit: rewriting my review. . Adding circle to my home network created stability issues in my home wifi network that did not previously exist. Namely, lag and server connection issues in online gaming. . One of those connection issues prevented my use of in-game chat on a device that circle wasn't allowed to manage, which gave me cause for concern that circle's scope of monitoring internet traffic also extended beyond the permissions i had given it. . I run two wifi networks in my home and verified that there were differences between the circle managed network and non-managed by connecting to the other network. . I have instead purchased a new router that has the same basic functionality of circle.

M. Cathy, Indiana says

It created problem in wifi network at home. My isp technician told me that its creating problem to many customers. So i returned it.

G. Alma, North Tyneside

Decent but software/configurability needs expanded functionality. Great for shutting off the internet for all devices associated with a particular child. Don't know how well the filter works for "bad" websites as there is no way to tell when monitored devices attempt to reach blocked sites. The "insights" area is interesting in that it shows how long each site has been accessed per day/week/month. Time limits can be set per day, but not by day of the week. So it applies to both weekdays/school days and weekends alike, which is unrealistic. . Keep in mind that circle does not distinguish between different users on a device. So even if you have separate child logins/profiles set up on a pc or mac, for instance, the access privileges assigned and daily time limit cannot be split up by user. This is a major disadvantage in a house with multiple children sharing systems/devices.

We've had it a few weeks. I actually ended up disconnecting it as it was causing too many issues with our devices. Online store firestick, our normal computer, etc. It would block sites that made no sense (such as prodigy game (math game), my son's online math textbook for school, etc. ) and really caused some problems with other things. If i wanted to make sure something would work, i'd have to take it off the network. While it was good at blocking (very good), the filters have issue which kind of ruined the point. The troubleshooting tips did not help at all. At this point, our routers built-in parental controls are more effective.

I purchased this router in august and could not get the filters to work. I scoured the website for assistance and contacted support. Chad, the support person suggested that there is a work-around by setting up custom urls manually. This seemed bizarre to me because none of the filtering worked. I mean none! . . I'm a single dad, working full time and my ability to deal with issues like these are sporadic. So this weekend (december) i finally had time to do more work on it. I tried resetting the router and unplugging the direct connection usb that to the router. The problem still persisted. I went back to the circle support site and discovered that they published an new document listing routers that are incompatible with circle. It turned out that my router google onhub is incompatible. This was completely new information and nothing that was mentioned previously by circle i contacted chad at support about this and asked for a refund, because it was to late for online store to offer me the refund. Chad said that circle wouldn't provide me a refund, and therefore i am now stuck with it. $89. 00 down the drain. . I feel strongly that circle should accept the return and refund my money. They did not adequately disclose compatible issues in their marketing material, and at my time of purchase, on their website. Also, in looking at the support information that chad provided me, not once did he ask me what type of router i had, he instead suggested a work-around. I feel this is deceptive and cannot endorse this product.

Shuts down my internet as soon as i plug it in. Even without any filters.

V. Hannah, Washington says

Not a bad idea, but needs serious refinement for an end product. . The biggest issue i had was that i had paired it to an incompatible router; ok, fine. I have another router i then wanted to pair it with, but there appeared to be no way to reset the device. . So when the circle was on, it mounted a dos (denial of service) attack on my router, rendering all devices incapable of using it. There was no physical way to reset the authentication on the circle to prevent it from attaching to my router. Further, subsequent pairing attempts failed as the circle could not be reached during a critical step in the pairing process.

We got this, because other things that limit device time work for one device only. If the phone time quit, they would change to a laptop, or something else to get more time. We've had circle for a week and here are the things that i don't like:. . If you turn off the content filter, it also turns off the time limits and bed times without warning. My kids had a fun day that day. . You can have different bed times on the week days and weekend, but you cannot have different time limits for the weekend. We have to manually change it every weekend if we want them to have an extra hour on saturday. . If i'm away from home, connecting to circle is hit or miss. I have to keep pressing "retry" until it finally works. It works well when i'm home though. . Finding all of the mac codes is kind of a pain. I don't know how they could make it better though. . It seems to only find the mac codes for devices on 2. 4 ghz and not 5 ghz. I had to change everything to 2. 4ghz so circle could see it to set them up. . If i set up a custom filter for a website, there is a slider. Does the slider set to "on" mean that the website is blocked or allowed? i don't know. It doesn't tell me. . Bed times seem buggy. My daughter's devices said it was past her bedtime in the morning after the wake-up time. My son's devices did not stop the internet at his bedtime at least twice. . It only blocks the internet, which i knew. My kids just switch to using apps that don't need the internet, so we need other things to keep track of device time. . I like the idea though.

The circle was easy to setup and did exactly what it said it did. We were able to put controls and limits in place for our kids and everything was great. . Except for one problem. It interfered with other devices on our network that were supposed to be ignored. We don't have a wired home phone and instead just have mobile phones that usually stay connected to our wireless home network. We started experiencing dropped calls, text messages that wouldn't send and intermittent network problems on other devices that weren't on the circle. . I'm not sure why this was happening, but our house has multiple wireless access points and different sub-networks. We also have multiple devices on the network (lights, garage, sprinkler, etc. ). So it might be that for more complex home networks this isn't going to work for you.

Setup was fine, but i'm very techie. My guess though is for most average users, they may struggle initially with setup. Now i have this plugged into my extender so it's a direct connect vs wireless. I've set this up to control via my ipad. It controls my 2 daughter's ipads and one computer laptop. So far, it's pretty basic. It allows you to restrict by total time and by specific apps, i. E. Youtube, netflix, etc. . I agree with the other reviews that it would be nice to have the ability to control each setting on a daily basis so during school nights, i can have it shut off the internet connection at a different time vs the weekend. Same with the duration of each app. Ie. School days netflix may only be able to access 1 hour, but on weekends 2 hours. . It has made it much easier to take the devices away at night time. I have it set to shut off at 8:30 and it's only taken a couple days, and now both kids just put the ipad away and there's no argument or wining. Hoping there will be additional enhancements such as:. . Different settings for each day. Ability to add on the fly extended time for tasks being done. Ie. Complete your homework, quickly input a code that allows 30 minutes extra time for xx app. . Ok adding some additional comments and features that would be nice. . 2 outstanding issues i still wish circle would have are:. . Override button where i can either add time easily or gain full control over the device without having to shut each section down. Ended up having to do this to add another control app to bridge the gap that circle doesn't have. But in order to do this, i had to change the rating to none, disable bedtime (because i was doing this after the kids went to bed), disable restrictions, etc. Then had to re-enable afterwards. I orginally thought the pause button was going to allow this, but that's for another purpose. . Second feature missing is an area where i could place apps or websites that ignore the settings for example, educational apps, the kids can play on those without a time limit, but there's no way to allow them to go over the time limit setting. In fact schools are now expecting my kids to go to certain sites to enhance their math and reading, but there's no way to white list these sites or apps to prevent circle from counting it as time against them or limiting it past bedtime rules. . The picture for each kid doesn't work, tried zooming to frame my kid and it just ignores it and includes a corner of the photo. . I'm hoping disney moves a bit quicker on getting these types of added functionality. Other challenge is when the device is not at home, but say at a friends or relative. That's where apps have a leg up, but i do like the ability to control both pc and tablet devices. Right now, i'm using a combination of apps and circle to try to bridge the gap. For example, i no longer use circle's bedtime restrictions as i have an app that does this and allows for time to be added with a push of a button, something circle does not provide.

It keeps grabbing household appliances and blocking them from updating even though we tell it to forget them.

The disney circle is a good tool for a home with multiple devices that need parental monitoring. In our home, we have a mixture of devices that are used by teenagers and elementary grade students. If each child has their own device this product works very well. However, we have one laptop that is shared by the elementary students along with teenagers and adults. Disney circle is unable to distinguish who the user is and so it limits the device at the setting you set specifically for that device. That is a weakness of the product's ability to filter. . Another weakness is that the ip spoofing technique of the circle, formally known as arp spoofing, introduces some challenges for modern browsers. For example, there are many pages from yahoo, espn, online store that are linked to an ad which then redirects to the actual page. That redirect is not handled well by disney circle and the result is that it says page cannot be loaded. I see the issue happen across the three modern browsers of chrome, firefox, and safari. . The strengths of disney circle are its highly customizable filtering. I love how it can control youtube's restricted mode which cannot be manually disabled. It is very simple to setup which took less than 3 minutes. When pages are visited that are restricted by circle a friendly page will be displayed such as "you've been filtered" or "it is past your bedtime. ". . Overall i would recommend this product only because i don't know of any other parental filtering products that are this easy to use. It does have limitations that may frustrate the modern online shopper or news junkie. But it does do the job which is filter content.

Goes offline frequently, locking internet access to all devices managed by the circle when it does. At first, this was happening maybe once a day for about 10-15 minutes but since last night it's been offline more than it's been online. . Edit: after talking to support, i connected the circle directly to my router via ethernet cable. So far this seems to have resolved the network issues so i revised my rating to 3 stars. I took stars off because i've also had issues connecting to the circle during set up, have had trouble with it not recognizing some devices to add to the profile and taking repeated attempts connecting and disconnecting from wifi before they could be added, and with the mycircle app occasionally not wanting to load on my son's phone. Aside from these problems, i do like the ability to have one time limit across all devices.

This is a solid product, but lacking. We ve used it for a short time now, with a good amount of success. I only use it at home. My kids have devices with wifi, but no cellular service. I think it filters web content well, but it lacks in truly enforcing screentime hours if that is important to you. . Full disclosure, we are transitioning from a software solution that worked excellent on android devices, but not as well on apple ones. This leaves me wanting some of those features. Circle seems to work well for filtering appropriate web content and limiting access to web sites and online games. It does not however discourage use of games on tablets that require no internet connection. I mention this in case you are hoping the kids put down devices after time is up. They won t without prompting, they just switch to the unconnected local games. Circle does not notify the user that they are out of time or their use has been paused, they just can t get anywhere. The user cannot request more time via their device. Time limits seem to include background processes when tablets are left on, and also block background backups and upgrades that are scheduled outside of limited hours. . All in all, it does what it says, and quite well. I set it up with an older apple airport and a decent internet connection. I experienced none of the set up or function issues some other reviews dealt with. . Transitioning from software that let the user know how much time they had left, made the tablets useless after the time limit, except for any allowed apps (ebook reader, alarm, etc) has been challenging. . Kids don t like it, but don t hate it.

Good user interface (easy to setup and use) but adversely impacts internet speed and performance issues have occurred with various devices xbox, samsung smart tv remote, etc). At least i can pause my kids internet access when needed for excessive use, homework, dinner, etc.
