Dual Band Ac1900 Repeater Extender Rp Ac68u (Asus) 2870

Review for dualband repeater range extender

Price was $64.26 - $904.56. Update 5/17/16: asus contacted me after leaving the initial review and explained how to get the ssids combined. It may work in access point mode but i didn't try it since i changed my setup. The lack of led indicators or a legend (that i could find) explaining what slow blinking wifi lights mean makes it confusing as to what the box is doing (rebooting, confused, factory default). The easiest way to control it, regardless of you endpoint, is to connect to the generic wifi ssid it puts out initially so you can control it and not get stuck in the repeater. Asus. Com loop. It should have been easier over a wire when you already know the ip address but it wasn't. See my review of the ac3100 for a comparison. *. Original review. I used this in conjunction with the asus rt-ac3100. I never could get it work as an access point in my system and i don't know why. I have google fiber box providing dhcp. Every time i changed it to access point mode i would lose connectivity to the box or if i connected wirelessly to it i never got a dhcp address. I never found a way around this. I would pass on that you must be patient with this box when making changes. I could not find a clear way to figure out what the box was doing. Most of the time it was rebooting when i made changes but i had no way of knowing. The setup assistant would just say "connect to your extended network. " but in reality the box was rebooting and nothing would work. Once you figure out your ip address for the box write it down. Next time you make a change, don't assume it failed until that ip address isn't available for a couple of minutes. After that i settled for repeater mode and it works fine. The range is excellent and throughput is very good. Depending on the speed test i get up to 75/100 down/up with fiber. As a comparison, i get 350mbps down if i am connected wirelessly to the rt-ac3100. I have not done much with the roaming/beamforming etc. I knocked two stars off for the 6 hours lost trying to set it up which includes 42 minutes on the phone with asus support that was not helpful at all. Polite rep but clearly had no idea based on the amount of dead air between us. I gave up an said good bye.

Foreword

I got both this and the tp-link ac1900 desktop wi-fi range extender w/ touchscreen interface (re590t), and did a little bit of testing to figure out which one was better. Hopefully this will be helpful to others making the same comparison. . The quick summary of pros from the asus standpoint are:. * great firmware - asus uses the same firmware for all their routers, so it is a familiar user interface. * lots of features - if you like to customize your network setup this offers a lot more options i definitely fall into this category . * cool design - the overall style and led is nicely done. And the cons (which explain why this is not a 4 star review):. * weak antennas - compared to the tp-link range extender you are not going to get the same distance from the base station. * funky modes - the whole express way thing seems like a great idea, but it is really a niche feature that most folks don't need. * buggy (at times) - if you do much reconfiguration, be ready to give it a few extra reboots. My experience is when it first comes up whatever changes you made might not show peak performance. . I did some testing in my local network environment with the asus ac1900 and tp-link range extender at the same distance from the base station. There are a lot of modes for the asus router. And i meticulously tested every single one to see how performance stacked up. Got a few surprises that i will talk about after the data. . (numbers are down/up in mbps). Tp-link 5g: 123. 82/30. 14. Tp-link 2. 4g: 40. 00/11. 13. Tp-link access point: 237. 43/30. 13. Asus dual-band 5g: 112. 21/30. 50. Asus dual-band 2. 4g: 67. 60/29. 85. Asus express way 2. 4g: 92. 77/30. 21. Asus express way 5g: 82. 42/30. 32. Asus media bridge: 239. 23/30. 02. Access point 5g: 257. 12/30. 19. Access point 2. 4g: 116. 01/30. 35. . Just for kicks i repeated the 5g/2. 4g tests with the repeater 10 feet away from the base station (2 bars). Of course the results were much better:. Asus dual-band 5g wifi laptop test 235. 53/30. 25. Asus dual-band 2. 4g wifi laptop test 111. 78/29. 59. . Oh, and just for the record, the maximum speed of my network is 300mbps down and 30mbps up. . Some of the interesting things i discovered doing all this testing were:. 1. The antenna on the asus is just not as good as the tp-link. I also confirmed this by walking around my house and testing the rssi numbers. So if coverage is your primary consideration (which it really should since you are purchasing a range extender), go for the tp-link. 2. Express way is not that great. In theory it sounds cool to have 100% of your bandwidth dedicated to each connection, in practice it means your network can only be as fast as the slowest performer. In this case the 2. 4ghz band only allows around 100mbps, so you are going to be stuck with that. Splitting the 5ghz channel beats that easily. So the only case you might want to consider express way is if you have a lot of 2. 4ghz devices and you want to exclusively use the faster 5ghz channel for communication. A very niche case. . I ended up keeping both routers. The asus is serving as an access point / night light (did i mention the led is bright! ), and the tp-link is actually serving the purpose as a range extender. But hopefully for folks not planning to get both some of this info is helpful in your decision. PROS
  • To start off, i had my eye on this device coming out the pipeline from asus for a couple months. I saw it was in fcc approval a while back on a major tech website and waited as it just looked too promising to pass up. My first impression of this device upon receipt was that it looks like solid quality, but know it is a bigger footprint than many repeaters out there, but worth it as i will explain below. I have been using the asus rt-ac66u as my home router, but in some areas of my home including my office the wireless range was dismal. I also wanted to ability to host a external hard drive onto the network, however my router is wall mounted in the master bedroom closet and there is no place to locate a hard drive. This device was the perfect solution! . . I will continue to update my review as time goes on and let people know how the device is holding up, but so far so good! . . - setup -. In my home i do have some wired ethernet ports so i initially tried to plug this beast into the ethernet port as put it in access point mode. The issue i ran into is the "quick setup" is designed for range extension "repeater mode" for picking up the existing wireless signal and rebroadcasting it (this uses allows use of the wps button on the back of your router and the range extender). The problem that quickly occurred was this device and my asus router were both on 192. 168. 1. 1 by default. The instructions claim that repeater. Asus. Com will direct you to this rp device, however it did not work the first couple tries. After multiple attempts to get this device online with no success, i finally decided to see if it worked the "quick setup" way. I went and plugged it in as a wifi only repeater and pressed the wps button on the router then the range extender. Sure enough, worked like a charm. I still wanted it setup in the office which is not quite the best range for it to be in this configuration mode so i went back and now tried it again with the access point mode by plugging it into the ethernet, worked perfect! now by going to repeater. Asus. Com it was on 192. 168. 1. 224 and i could login to the console and off i went, set-up exact same ssids as the router for both 2. 4ghz and 5ghz and the system is working perfectly since. The ui is clean and very similar to the one i am used to from the asus router. All in all i see this as a minor frustration and not worth dinging the product as in the end it works perfect. . - range/functionality -. The device offers repeater mode, access point(ap) mode, and media bridge mode. I am now setup in access point mode but had easy success as mentioned above with repeater mode. One of the primary reasons i picked this up was i wanted another asus wireless devices that will seamlessly extend wireless coverage in my home without the need for more ssids. The timecapsule from apple was great in providing a wireless ap, but if i put it on the same ssid i ran into major problems of jumping around and dropping connections. By having this device with an asus router it is seamless and i have zero drops. There is a setting in the control panel of this device and my asus router for "roaming assistance" that is can be enabled. I believe this improves the hand-off between devices. I have enabled it on both of my devices. As far as range and performance it is outstanding! i have 100mbps cable internet in my home. This ap to my iphone 6 or laptop on 5ghz puts out over 100mbps when i am about 10 feet away, and hits somewhere in the 115mbps range (clearly capped by isp). With a laptop i see it easily extend over 100+mbps. I can get across most of the house and still maintain the 80-90 range. Outside stucco exterior i am still picking up 70mbps. Obviously with 2. 4ghz you get the expected drop in speed of about 50%+ but the range is stronger. I intend to mainly use the 5ghz from this device though. Bottom-line, it performs at the level it should given the technology and nothing less! . . -size/footprint/physical information-. While this device has a decent size footprint, it is actually pretty light weight being under 2 pounds. However, if you want the ability to drop a device down to really put out some 1st class wifi in a dead zone all the while providing additional ethernet ports (5 port switch) and usb 3. 0 then the size is totally worth it. I personally have mine in the corner of the room setup next to an apple time capsule which i show in the attached photos and they are roughly the same size. I can confirm it is 7inch x 4inch x 4inch. Be warned it glows red, personally i think its awesome looking, but if you don't want a nightlight in the room, find a different spot or steer clear. . -packaging-. Solid packaging, very "apple-ish", comes with one ethernet jumper cable, power cord, and the device itself. Not much else to add. . - hosted hard drive - (with explanation of how to get usb 3. 0 to work). This device has a single usb 3. 0 port on the back that is perfect for hosting the contents of a hard drive on your network and even on your ddns website offered free with your asus router. I plugged my usb 3. 0 hdd in to the back of the asus rp and to my surprise, no device was detected in the control panel. I tried multiple times to power up both the hdd and the rp but still no luck. After some forum searching with similar asus technology i found a setting under wireless advanced settings, that is enabled by default, that blocks usb 3. 0 interference. Once you disable this setting the hdd was detected immediately and everything worked perfect. Honestly, asus should give a warning to customers about this as it is very hidden and you expect by default a feature like usb 3. 0 would be functional. The media servers can be turned on and allow all kinds of remote access to documents, etc. Through their aicloud 2. 0 app and it offers a built in itunes server. I am planning to setup the itunes server to host blu-ray content to my apple tv downstairs, but this is still in the works.
  • Has some issues, but could just be me not being able to configure it properly. Everything else works great though, but docked one star because its too expensive.
CONS
  • Ok, so got it today and plugged up. All the other reviews were dead on with the lack of set up instructions. I wanted to set up a repeater with the same ssid so i didnt have to reconnect walking through my house. This took a couple of hours because i had to slowly figure it all out. Im tech savy but the expectation from asus that the average person could figure out how to utilize all the stuff they advertise, is absolutely ridiculous. . Here is my cheatsheet for next time:. 1- had to make sure my asus routers' 2. 4 and 5ghz networks had the same ssid and password. 2- have to go within each network settings and make sure roaming assistant (and beamforming) is enable. 3-then set up repeater. 4-change both 2. 4 and 5ghz networks to the same ssid. 5-go into both the 2. 4 and 5ghz and enable roaming assistant (and beamforming). . This took a couple of hours to figure out. Asus could have (and should have) had better instructions. Or better yet, have this stuff defaulted in repeater mode. And something on my asus router i could click to optimize a repeater. . Im unlikely to change the review to 5 stars because of this, 4 stars maybe if the performance is great.
  • Thought i was buying an item of quality. Poor extension to the outdoors, specifically why i bought it.
  • I don't normally write reviews, but if i can save someone from this product i hope this helps. I purchased this and have had it for a few months using it in access point mode (wired to the home network) with nothing but problems. And unfortunately i am out of the online store return window. Our family has several ios devices using the wireless and much of the time they cannot connect to this access point even though the signal is strong. They connect but just report "no internet connection" in settings and are unable to get a dhcp address from the main router. No matter what i change on the advanced settings nothing works reliably. A reboot usually temporarily fixes the problem but i can't constantly be rebooting the ap. My main home router is another asus model with no problems. I've flashed the firmware and restored to factory settings multiple times. . From what i read on the asus forums they've known about this problem for over a year and have done nothing to correct it with what i assume would be a simple firmware update. It's not a hardware problem as people have obtained replacement units with the same results. My only hope is that they will eventually come around with an update, but as it's been 8 months since the last one, the chances appear slim. If they do i'll update my review.

dualband repeater range extender ASUS Dual-Band AC1900 Repeater Range Extender Media Bridge Access Point with USB 3.0 (RP-AC68U) (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

So i bought this to pair with an rt-n66u that is , due to circumstances beyond my control, on the far side of my house from anything that needs it. The initial setup was a bit difficult between my own inexperience with extenders and the fact that the device was so new that asus didn't actually have any documentation on it. . I've been using this for months now and it's great. I don't have connectivity issues. I can't really say anything by way of bandwidth because my isp bites but in-network stuff is perfectly reasonable.

(0) Question: The plug seems to be a european plug. is this just the picture or does it come with a us adapter?

(1) Question: Can i use the wifi repeater mode while also connecting to my 88u via cat6? so i'd basically have a repeater as well as a switch.

(2) Question: Has anyone logged in the user interface? is it working properly ? i've tried and user interface seems to be broken even after manul firmware update?

The F.A.Q. for asus dual-band ac1900 repeater range extender media bridge access point with usb 3.0 rp-ac68u

We had problems with connectivity reaching our whole home. First we purchased and asus router but we still had the issue. Once we purchased the asus dual-band ac1900 repeater range extender (suggested by our computer repair person) all our devices were able to connect. My wife is now very happy that she can use her tablet anywhere in our home.

A number of questions have been asked here.

The ranger repeater itself is a good product to extend your home network. I did, however, end up returning this one because it was defective. It happens.

I love asus products and this is another great example of an asus item that works, works well, and is easy to use and setup. . Setup took me about 3 mins. Wps connection made connecting to the wifi network a breeze. Been able to extend network coverage in our office and have eliminated the many dead spots in the office. . This makes me look like an it wizard.

Just got this, very nicely built and provides a reliable connection. Upgraded from a linksys media extender which was having an intermittent connection. This asus just works and expands the wifi coverage by a considerable amount. This unit comes with 5 ethernet ports vs. Most that come with 4. The red led/glow albeit cool can be distracting at times specially in a living room but a plus is that is can be turned on/off.

Asus to the rescue again. The wps button setup didn't work, but it was easy enough to connect to the default network and go through the guide that automatically pops up. I was having issues with another adapter getting an hsm on my network (it lives in my garage and there is no ethernet there). Once i set this up and plugged in my hsm it worked great.

. Ophelia, Bolton says

Been using this one for about 6 months now. And, i have to say it does a pretty good job once configured. Wireless throughput is zippy-but-not-impressive. And, the configuration could be more flexible as the "wizard" type setup drives you through a simple path to connect to your 2. 4 and 5ghz networks. But, nothing else. Meh. Maybe i expected too much configurability. . My asus ac3200 router seems to get a bit confused with all the idevices walking in and out of our home and connecting via the repeater. So, more control over dhcp/ip assignments would be a welcome feature. But, this unit doesn't report its connections efficiently to the main router. This results in the inability to manage a single device from the router. For example my daughter's iphone is set on the main router to disconnect at 9pm and allow reconnect at 6am. But, i have found that the iphone "hides" behind the ip address of the repeater/extender. Therefore bypassing parental controls on the main router. This is because the connection is reported to the main router, as the repeater's ip and not my daughter's iphone ip. So, the connection is allowed to pass through at any time. Mac address options in the repeater would stop this problem. But, alas, there are no advanced controls to speak of. . I also wanted to use mac and or ip address to specify which devices would be using the unit at any given time (traffic control) but, again, advanced configuration options just aren't there. . A bit pricey for a basic range-extender without any ability to filter connections. But, i suppose i should have just bought a second router and created a vlan to do that.

Recommended home run! this was sooo easy to set up we are getting wired speeds 60' from the router in a very crowded environment. We did however put this on a ups power pack to protect it from summer lightning strikes and power outages just for good measure. Set it up in about 10 min and it is rock solid. For best results, do not use the dhcp instead go for the static ip address. We are using this as a wireless bridge with an asus ac router, and are getting speeds beyond what we were hoping for. It never drops the connection it is rock solid, with these speeds we have some future proofing built in. We paired it with the asus dual-band wireless-ac3100 gigabit router (rt-ac88u) these two items are so well paired to each other that getting the max speeds was easy as pie. We did leave the old wifi n-router in place to serve the older devices on the 2. 4 band. This freed up the asus for 5ghz service on ac band only with the newer standards, we turned off the 2. 4 band. It seemed that serving older devices really pulled the speed to a crawl, so the kids, guests, ipads and smart phones get to use the older n-router. This really freed up our bandwidth and seems to make max use of our internet connection without interruptions. We have a voip, computer and printer hooked up to this as well as a media center, with no lagg whatsoever. Did i mention this is set up 60' from the source router? take a look at the speed test. Well worth the money. September 2016 update. Flawless, and stable! has not been offline since set up. I do have it on a ups power pack in case of power outage, and am using static ip so no issues there. We live near large office complex, very crowded air space. No issues! forget the negative reviews, they have not done the set up correctly. Recommended. Thanks asus. Vote thumbs up if you found this helpful

It works good but i have noticed it likes to drop the 5g side every few days and i have to restart it. Haven't had time to diagnose the issue.

Bought this last week and finally had a chance to test it out. I have a 4500 sq ft. House with a detached garage. I'm running the asus ac-3200 wireless router in a network closet in the center of the house. Isp att gigapower- average 900 mbps. . My wireless in the house is fine. But in the garage i had trouble getting reliable signal (80 ft. Away through 2 brick walls. Image that). Set this up in a 3 car garage and now i'm getting excellent wifi. I set this up in wifi repeater mode. So it is not as fast as my central wifi. But it is still better than before (running a cable in the future to set in ap mode. My electrical is old so power av adapters don't work). I had a netgear and linksys and would never get above 50 mbps on ac. . The main reason i bought this was for the "roaming assist" feature in the asus products. I work in it as a systems analyst for a school and having a good "mesh wifi" is essential. It allows a user to roam from room to room on the same ssid and bouncing to different ap's without loss of connectivity. I've tried other network extenders. But have always run into the same issue: they all want to create a 2nd wireless network with "ext 2. 4" or "ext 5. 0" which always drove me crazy. All the devices will disconnect and reconnect to the extended network which can take some time (noticable on voip or video calls like skype). This device allows you to use the same ssid and enable roaming assistant to create a more reliable/seamless transition. It does follow the same principle of setting up a 2nd network. But you can rename the wifi to your existing name and have seamless transition. I set roaming assist to disconnect -70dbm on both router and range extender so my devices will "leave" the main router and jump to the extender when the signal gets too weak without me having to manually switch. . The wifi strength indicators are nice since it allowed me to position it, without my laptop, in the "2nd bay" of my garage and get 2 bars on 5. 0ghz and 3 bars on 2. 4ghz. Now i can get 100 mbps in the drive way about 40 feet outside the garage (through a brick wall). . Currently i'm testing with universal beamforming since i run a mixed network of mac and pc. Other reviewers have said that mac's have issue with the beamforming. So i'll flip next week and see how it goes. . Overall: happy with the product but it is a bit expensive. If the price point was closer to $129. I would have bought another.

A. Susan, Louisiana says

My husband had a little trouble with the install but within one evening everything was up and running. Our main router is in a far room behind our garage in a colonial style house and this extender sends the signal to the basement and the farthest bedroom.

Q. Kelly, Staffordshire

Currently using it as a media bridge to 4k tv xbox one and nvidia shield tv. Absolutely awesome solution to the powerline adapter i was using. I'm subscribed to a 300mbps package and can get 250mbps to the devices downstairs, the powerline adapter connected to a dumb switch only provided 30mbps. 4k streaming with ultraflix and netflix is perfect. Tried the repeater mode and it worked perfectly but was not necessary for my intended use. If running a cat6 cable isn't possible this is the next best solution. Av2 powerline is good but dependent on the wiring in your house, placement, and isn't intended for multiple high bandwidth devices.

. Audrey, Bexley says

Fast setup and great coverage, but no real manual in the box or online. I have a large home, and the asus rt-ac5300 router (a beast) still did not provide adequate coverage (but it is in a corner of the home and not centrally located, so really not the router's failure). The standard setup adds 2 new ssids, adding "rpt" to the end of your existing ssid in both channels (2. 5 and 5ghz). There is a "roaming" capability that allows both units to share the ssid and hand off to one another (i am not sure, but this may require both units to be compatible asus units). Setting the feature up requires connecting the unit to your existing router from a few feet away, then logging in from your computer, changing the default log-in and password. From here, keeping in mind this is a two channel router, you enter in the network map tab the ssid for each channel and password (these import automatically if you successfully set up using wps, so all i did was delete the rpt suffix so it shares the same one ssid for both channels), and then going into advanced settings. Here, for each channel, you turn on roaming assistant and beam forming, and then there are some odd settings that have no guidance: a "reducing usb interference" setting that is on/off (left mine on), and a cutoff for low signal when handing off to between routers (left it at default of -70db). Too bad there is no setup instruction or setup "wizard", that would make this unit perfect. I will update after i have had time to test the functionality and see if i have problems, but so far, amazing.

G. Anonymous, Liverpool

This is a great range extender - i used to have problems with my wi-fi tv in my family room, not any more! i have the asus rt-ac68u, so this is a perfect match. Not sure if this will work as well with other brands, but i'm very satisfied.

P. Juliana, Arkansas says

Works very well. I am using "ap mode" which means i used a cat6 cable 100 feet to the other end of the house and setup wifi using the same ssid name as my main asus router and the speed of data transfer is full speed. It works as advertised and has some advanced features. . For those who are using this to extend their wifi signal remember that you lose 50% speed times the connections because this device have to connect to both the main router wifi and your wifi and it was max speed of let's just say for example 100mbps so it will have to split it to 50mbps and if some one else is also connected and streaming then it drops down to 25mbps. "ap mode" is the best choice since there is a physical dedicated connection at high speed to the main router at 1gb/s so this device don't have to deal with playing with signals. . With ap mode the main router assigns all the i. P and all device can see and communicate with each other.

Smooth transaction , great product and price

T. Sherry, Northern Territory

Great product. Pretty easy to setup. It's default ip is statically set, so you'll have to connect it to a laptop to configure it manually. A nice number of feature, t even has a telnet server. It even allows you to use separate wpa keys for this repeated ssid. The only thing that disappoints me about it is its web server: it doesn't seem to support ssl. This means that if you want to configure it wirelessly, you're transmitting your username and password in cleartext. Granted, wifi frames are encrypted by the wep/wpa key, so not just anyone can be listening. But anyone associated with the device can easily capture your frames and see the password. Same goes for telnet (wish it supported ssh), but alas. . Also, i recommend changing the default username and password asap. They're both 'admin' so anyone can easily just hit it's ip and login. And if they have physical access to the device, they'll be able to connect to the nic port, guess 'admin/admin', then navigate to the wireless page and see your wpa keys in clear text. . If you had an airbnb guest, for example, and you aren't providing them with the wpa key, then with just a bit of knowledge they could easily get it.

C. Paula, Haute-Normandie says

Arrived pretty fast not as easy to set up as i had hoped, called their help and not sure he knew what to do either. Had me reboot then i figured it out myself. Seem to work ok now.

O. Meyer, Warrington

Excellent, excellent support staff. Turns out networking is very quirky and if your 2g and 5g passwords are different it makes things complicated a very patient and competent live rep via phone worked with me and we took our time and discovered this quirk. Great job! see my review of a netgear similar product which i returned. All about service!

I. Rose, Calderdale says

Works great. For some reason the wps did not automatically connect to my asus router so i just connected to the ssid for the extender and a configuration page loaded and i was able to put in my password and select the router to repeat. Works great for extending my inside network to the yard outside. Seems to cover at least a hundred feet outside the house. I keep it outside in a water tight box on an extension cord.

. Isabel, City of Bristol

Very easy to set up with my asus router. Able to stream 3 tv's at once. I have ben sold on the asus products, have used their mother boards for years building my own computers !

M. Miller, California says

I have this setup in repeater mode. It works great! i had needed it since the wireless signal was weak in the front of my house. I have my dish dvr hooked up via one of the gigabyte ports in the back. I haven't had any issues with this. I did have some early issues with setup but everything is all good since i changed it to a static ip of 192. 168. 1. 2 and my router at 192. 168. 1. 1

. Denise, Slough

(updated - f/w fixed my issues as of 6/17). . I setup the asus rp-ac68u in ap mode, connected it to my asus rt-ac68u router via 1 gbps rj45 ethernet cable, i turned off dhcp on the ap (allowing my router to exclusively issue all dhcp addresses) in this config mobile devices (ios and android) do not work well. Wireless dhcp times outs often to wireless devices and its super frustrating. Asus support has not been helpful, i have a ticket in their system since last year, and no one is taking me seriously. From the very beginning i have updated to the latest firmware (3. 0. 0. 4. 378. 394) and did a factory default, still have the issue. . Others sites are reporting this same issue, but online store does not allow external links, google "rp-ac68u" and dhcp, you will see several threads with the same problem. All users have given up! i believe this can be corrected with a new firmware release, but i cannot recommend buying this device until this issues is fixed. Stay away! . . (update) after months of complaining, asus fixed the ap mode. A great device now that it works. 100% recommend

. Joanna, Maine says

Extremely easy to set up. Exceptional access point that connects wirelessly to my router and provides extended/reliable/fast bandwidth to my 2500sqft 2-story house. Asus has done it again!

. Helen, Oregon

Pricey, but it does the job and is really easy to set up (at least if you have an asus router as well, i didn't try mixing brands). My neighborhood of quarter acre lots is a bit of a wifi war zone so we needed a little boost in one corner of the house which just happened to be the living room where a lot of time is spent online.

L. Evelyn, Connecticut says

I love the design of this product. If you have to have a repeater in your living room, why not get one that looks like a miniature supercomputer? it's gorgeous and it works great.

. Noguera, Newham

I needed to connect an ethernet product with my network, but the router was too far. I actually have a laptop, media server, and nas connected to each other via an ethernet switch. I then connected this switch to the asus rp-ac52 via ethernet, and now this mini network connects to my router via wifi. It's been working great so far. Fast and easy setup. I'm using this product in media bridge mode.

K. Lindsey, Baden-Wuerttemberg says

I bought this repeater to match it with my newly bought dual band asus router. I have installed it in a three storied brick and mortar house, and so far, it has helped me expand my wifi to places where i needed to place surveillance cameras. It has worked very well. It seems that the 2. 4g band is more stable than the 5g band. I do not know the reason for this.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

G. Hadley, Hillingdon says

All i can offer is a timeline of my experience this evening:. . 5:30: arrived home and opened the box. 5:35-5:45: connecting via the wps mode did not work. 5:45 - 7:00: - on phone with asus technical support (edward). After this much time it became clear that edward had little or no knowledge of the product. I had to read back to him from the asus website the roaming assist feature that i wanted to enable. He had no idea how to set this up. I asked to speak with a supervisor. 7:10 - after being on hold for 10 minutes (total silence, no hold music or indicator), edward returned to the phone. He began speaking about not being able to hear me, and hung up. . I am left with a brand new extender that 1. Took an hour to setup and 2. Does not appear to work as advertised.

B. Wimbish, Stockton-on-Tees

I have an asus rt-ac88u router and when i compared the performance of the 5g router vs. The 5g asus repeater on speedtest. Net the repeater was 3 times slower. 230 mbps vs. 79 mbps download. The repeater was 1 foot away from the router so it was not related to distance or interference as best i know. I could not justify having such as expensive repeater that was so much slower than my router. I called asus tech support and they were not much help. I'd pass on this one.

. Harrison, Blackpool says

Do not buy this extender. I have been trying to get it to work for almost a week. It will connect to the router asus rt ac5300, but no internet access. I have upgraded the firmware, change the router settings and everything else i or people in forums suggested. I am a it professional with 15 years experience. The product is a 300 dollar brick. I am really bummed because asus always makes such good reliable stuff.

A. Eva, Alabama

Only worked for a few hours. Spend more time setting it up and trying to reconnect it. Very disappointed in customer service for asus too. I. . Updated. It should be zero star review. I returned the idea and did not get a full refund.

X. Alice, South Dakota says

Not reliable hard to setup. I have tried multiple times to get the device to work in access mode. The connection is unreliable, and often drops. Avoid this product.

H. Erickson, California

The item covers your ac outlet completely, really not suitable for a family house with techie kids. The wifi range did not extend as far as i needed it to. Will have to find something else that works.

Q. Cageen, Arizona says

I'm so disappointed in the asus ac1900. I have the ac5300 router and you would expect that connecting the ac1900 repeater to another asus device would be seamless. I had tremendous difficulty trying to get the repeater to perform its initial setup. Had to contact asus support, they couldn't get it to work. They gave me an rma to ship to them to be repaired. Once i received the "repaired" repeater back, the same issues occured. The router works great, has for a year. I'll be returning the repeater.

J. Guest, South Tyneside

I am not a fan of the configuration of this unit. I could not get it to work the way i wanted. That said, it does work and i kept it.

S. Guest, Oldham says

Overall, i found this product to be less than expected as the router in the same series was amazing. I had problems accessing my router once this was setup (using the same ssid for a seamless network feel along with the disconnection feature that should essentially ensure you are alwyas on the strongest connection) and eventually disabled a log of the features that were key selling points. The device is huge and is fairly tacky is placed somewhere other than a gaming room / office.

M. Courtney, Tennessee

Does not hook up and work as a wap as of yet. I had a network jack in another room as the "extend" was to far away to work. Have been going back and forth with support on trying to get it working as an ap. Using an asus router so expected it would just work easily but not working yet. Wasted too much time and effort. Latest thing to try is to reset my router but i shouldn't have to do that.

E. Jacqueline, Sefton says

Thought it would be a bit more seamless with my asus ac1750 router, but seems to need to be rebooted a lot.

. Cathy, Manchester

We bought this and it did not work well and made many calls to asus to test it and it still had many issues. We returned it but was not told that they would not refund all of monies. If we would have known, we could of sent to asus to repair under warranty

U. Margaret, West Berkshire says

Doesn t work well. connection is intermittent

W. Paula, Barnet

When i plugged it in to set it up, the signal strength lights did not stop blinking. I followed directions to reset the unit. I went ahead and followed the wps connection directions anyway. Neither worked. I searched for the reason, and found out the reset button on some units does not line up with a plastic tube on the base leading to the reset button. The sides of the tube keep the reset button continually depressed. Sure enough, my unit's reset button was offset from the hole. I contacted asus support and received no help. Jerry a referred me to web pages that did not apply to a repeater. His second response was to return it or find some technician to look at it, but in frustration i had set it aside for too long. . So, i followed the suggestion posted by a fellow buyer: i pried off the rubber feet which hide screws and unscrewed the base. I then used my variable speed multi-tool on low speed to shave off the plastic tunnel. I re-installed the base and was able to connect the repeater following the wps directions. . If you have the same problem, look through the reset hole and make sure only the black reset button is visible (it is the same size as the hole). I knew i was voiding the warranty, but i was so frustrated with asus support that i took the chance that i could fix the manufacturing defect. . I do not know how effective the repeater is, as in the meantime, i purchased an ac1900 router (netgear r6900) that provides an excellent signal to my upstairs. I replaced a three year old n router with the ac router. I could not believe the difference in signal strength and speed. I plan on saving the repeater for future use, now that it works.

O. Meghan, Halton says

The installation is not as easy as i would like this to be. And although i was able to extend both 2ghz and 5ghz wireless, the extender is not using both to communicate to the router. Changing the extender to communicate using the higher bandwidth cause the repeater unable to communicate to router. For now i am using the default 2ghz on 2 (out of 3) of my available wifi. I am bummed because i am using an asus rt-ac5300 which is a triple bandwidth router.

P. Alma, Wolverhampton

Pros: connects to 2. 4 or 5ghz wifi 802. 11ac. Great for older ethernet-only media center items or if you have something stuck on 802. 11a/b/g that you aren't ready to replace yet. Having multiple ethernet ports means you don't need a bridge and a switch to hook up all your items - saves a plug. . Cons:. Slower than other similar systems - mac mini right next to it, same 5ghz network, gets 175mbps throughput (our isp max), but wired going through the bridge on the wifi, gets only about 130mbps. Still plenty for streaming hd movies, and faster than legacy wifi though. . Bigger than it should be. Feels like it's mostly empty space inside. I wish they would have shrunk it an inch in every dimension to make it blend in more. . The pictures i saw don't show it but those red stripes are not painted. Those are led strips. And the whole top of the block is a red led too. So when it's powered up it's basically a bright red light bulb. With two wifi signal strength leds flashing white, each about the size of a dime. This is weird, because their router, which most people sit in a closet or office and never look at, has a button to turn off the leds, but this media bridge - to go in a media center - where people watch movies and tv in a the dark, is really bright, so bright even if you put it behind a large flatscreen, the whole edge of the tv is surrounded by a glowing red wall - very distracting. . There's no documentation on if/how you can turn it off, and nothing in the admin console software, but after some googling found a clue from another user looking at the same issue - secretly, you can tap the asus logo at the bottom left of one side, and that turns off the red lights. Still need to mask the wifi signal strength beacons, but the red was going to make this go back if i couldn't disable it somehow. . The other big downside is the software - it took several attempts to pair it via wps with an asus current model router, and once enabled it defaulted to wifi repeater, not bridge, which wouldn't be a big deal except flipping the system from one to the other took several attempts. Saving one tab would reverse settings on another tab and vice versa. There was also a troubling screen that said it could only be setup as a media bridge when using another identical rpac68u, rather than the router i had, but i just ignored that message and wrote it off as a bad translation or out of date screen, and it seems to be working. . On a basic item like this at this price, there should be a way to set this up using a wired connection, app, or something in addition to wps, and the settings should just work, and the docs should be polished.

C. Moore, Staffordshire says

Do not buy this product. When used in access point mode it works fine for about 5 minutes, then gets into a mode where connected wireless devices continually cycle through losing connectivity and reconnecting, over and over and over. . Asus technical support is useless. They make you change settings and run the same tests each time you contact them. I tried to get an rma but all i got was a runaround, being passed from person to person, and eventually they completely stopped responding so i gave up. . I am an experienced software developer with decades of experience working with computers and network equipment. This is, by far, the worst product and experience i have ever had with computer equipment in my life. . I ended up purchasing a netgear wac104 instead. Much cheaper, and it actually works!

Z. Russell, Nottingham

It is ok. Despite 802. 11ac, connected on 5g and main router wireless speeds of about 500 mbps, i generally get about 70 mbps speeds off this repeater. . It has also been finicky with the connection, and connecting to it directly for setup is impossible without resetting the device and starting from scratch

. Anonymous, Kensington and Chelsea says

I spent 1/2 hour with tech surrort just getting the rep to understand the model number! i figured out how to address the problem i was having. Tech support as bad as the old days! i'll go back to belkin, cisco. Rebate offer a joke. All peoperwork and wanting too much of my personal life

L. Ruff, Cambridgeshire

If you're looking for a wireless access point, look elsewhere. Works as a repeater, but not as an ap.

F. Michele, Warrington says

Asus customer loyalty: i have contacted asus support and was referred to the engineering team, back in late october, 2017. I was told to expect a call from them in 72 hrs. It has been over 30 days and well over 720 hours. I need help as this router is now a very expensive paper weight. . My review:. . I give this 2 stars only because i originally wrote a review of the product and gave it a single star, hoping that asus would see the review and contact me (see my point, above, regarding how my 'call back' from asus engineering has not happened. ). I noticed that asus customer loyalty has responded to other reviews when they have 2 stars, so hopefully they will see this and attempt to contact me regarding the failure of my asus rp-ac1900. . I own the asus rt-ac5300 router, and purchased this rp-ac1900 repeater at the same time so as to extend the reach of the rt-ac5300 router. I assumed it would be needed given my home layout. I have a home office on a separate floor, and my previous wifi routers have never been able to reach my office without significant loss of performance. . The logic behind purchasing the rp-ac1900 along with the rt-ac5300 was this: it was asus' best repeater available when i purchased the rt-ac5300, and i assumed that compatibility was a reasonable assumption given the fact that both are asus products. . The rt-ac5300 and the rp-ac1900 are, in fact, extremely compatible. The setup of the rp-ac1900, once i set up the rt-ac5300, was mindbogglingly simple! i have had to download the latest firmware for the rp-ac1900 (and for the rt-ac5300) and have done hard resets on both - each time i reestablished my home networks on the rt-ac5300, the setup of the rp-ac1900 was super easy and incredibly intuitive. My compliments to asus for having figured that out! . . Unfortunately, the rp-ac1900 turned out to be a bit of a problem child. . In my line of work, i often use my home office for video and audio conferences using web-based services, on my office pc/laptops, connected to the wifi network in my office (the very network from my rt-ac5300 which is repeated / extended by my rp-ac1900). I often, in fact every time i have a meeting using the extended network, loose internet connectivity and the meeting software has to reestablish my participation in the ongoing meeting. . My first response was, and for the longest time i blamed, my internet provider: "damn cable monopoly! shame on them for such crappy service! " - you know, the typical response one has to internet issues: blame your cable company. But, about 1 month ago, i happened to conduct a meeting from upstairs, logged into the network supported by my klingon warship (the rt-ac5300). My coworker and i spent 3 hours on a web-based video conference, sharing docs, our screens, consuming huge amounts of bandwidth, when my coworker noticed (out loud), that i had not dropped the whole time. He asked what i was doing differently, and it dawned on me that i was doing something differently: i was using the wifi network supported by the rt-ac5300. It's 8 spider like antennas were beam-forming all mu-minoie and my connection was stable, hell, bullet-proof. The klingon warship is strong, and it lives long and prospers. You get the point. It rocks. The rp-ac1900 was suddenly my new suspect. Com-c-a-s-t was temporarily off my poo-poo list. . So, i went into the admin app for the rp-ac1900 and searched for logs. And low and behold, there are records! the rp-ac1900 has been dropping and reconnecting for-ever. So, i updated firmware, i reset it, i checked the firmware again, and unplugged it, and plugged it back in, i rinsed and repeated for both the repeater and the router. I moved it to right underneath the klingon warship (the rt-ac5300) - so it was literally 7 feet away (and only separated by 3/4 inch white oak floors with 3/4 inch redwood sub flooring). The force was strong. Unfortunately - the repeater continues to fail. . I didn't figure all of this out until my warranty from asus had expired (of course). I bought the rp-ac1900 in aug of 2016 and figured out that it was faulty in late september 2017. Of course. I know, call me a dummy. I'm no mr spock. I fancy myself more of a doctor mccoy: "damn it jim, i'm only a doctor! ", but i'm not a doctor. Nor am i a network engineer. Nor am i a klingon. Nor am i a dude with lots of time to educate myself on wifi networking and how to interpret the very technical scrips found in the logs of a rp-ac1900. . Ships log: star-date late october, 2017: i contacted the asus help desk, spoke with a really cool dude who attested to the fact that "houston, we have a problem" with my rp-ac1900. He tried to figure it out and conceded that it would have to be addressed by scotty, the chief engineer. He took notes, and sent them to engineering, along with my cell phone number. With the intent that someone in engineering would call me within 72 hours. Scotty never called. I feel so used. . So - i have a very nice looking black monolith, kinda like the one in 2001 a space odyssey. Except mine is made by asus, and it doesn't work. . Help, someone, please.

T. Anonymous, South Carolina

It sucks. Continuously unreliable and finally failed since installation may 2016. I had a rt-n66u router that far outperforms this dedicated range extender as a repeater.

Y. Veronica, Iowa says

Short answer - get the asus rt68 and turn it into a repeater for the ac5300. This thing has horrible range and signal. Defeats the purpose when in close range around 25-50 feet to even use this. Asus tech support recommended this. Useless.

D. Pete, North Tyneside

Worst thing ever! would not stay connected and thats odd because i was connecting it the asus ac5300. Don't waste your time or your money. Most frustrating thing ever.

N. Noguera, Vermont says

I read the reviews, saw some of the negative comments about the unit not working but took a chance. I seem to have the same issue that many users have. I turn the unit on and the wifi lights keep blinking and the unit never is ready to connect/configure. I just got this today but ill be returning it back asap. I wont be taking chances on a replacement and will be getting a refund instead

V. Linda, Arkansas

Yuck. This was awful. Extremely difficult to set up and i really doubt that it worked. I trashed it after many attempts and just bought a powerline based extender. That works.
