Review for kindle ereader glarefree touchscreen

Price was 79. Pros: anti-glare book-like screen(should have been a bit brighter though). Eye-friendly. Quick reach to dictionaries and translations. Word-wise is a good feature. Easy reach to wiki. Havent used x-ray so cant comment on that. Light weight. Easy to use. Handy. . Cons: almost none if you look at it as an e-reader. A small brightness setting would have helped :d

Introduction

Great ereader got it in the prime day sale for only $50. I do recommend getting a light maybe a case if you are going to travel, take it to school, or just clumsy like me. The reason i gave four stars was beacuse when reading inside with a light i still got a glare its not bad enough to interup my reading but it is a disappointment. If you have a light close up it can glare but outside or with a ceiling light it is great! it also depends on the angle with close up lights the last pics are with the same light as second just different angle. I wish that i could turn off one click payment on kindle store. I had to turn kindle store completely off in parental controls so that if my kindle got stolen the couldn't use my one click payment method. I just get books on my computer instead and send them to my kindle. Kindle e-reader, 6 glare-free touchscreen display, wi-fi - includes special offers previous generation 7th Review (b00i15sb16)

I am working on an ambitious project to study and learn five languages. Happily, i have been able to download over 900 free foreign language kindle books and purchased the new kindle to help eliminate distractions from reading on a computer. . The kindle is much darker than i expected. I had hoped to be able to read wikipedia on the device but that is out of the question even with reading glasses. I can read books fine because i can increase the font size. A positive to the dark screen is that i can only see the picture and the title on the ads, so they won't have any affect on me. . I find it more comfortable to use the blunt end of a pen than my fingers. When i press on a word for a few seconds a dictionary will pop up in the language of the book i am reading. If it is a dual language book, like spanish/english, only the definitions for non-english words will show up, which is not a problem for me. Of course, if it is an english language book, definitions in english will come up. If you have wifi you can also have foreign words translated into english or a choice of over a dozen other languages. Very nice. . When searching for a book you can't simply flip through the pages of all of your titles. You either have to enter an exact page number to go to or you have to type in the first few letters of the book title. This is especially cumbersome when you are sifting through hundreds of books trying to put a collection together. . For under $3 i was able to purchase a previous generation online store kindle touch olive green genuine leather cover from ebay. The new kindle snaps into the cover perfectly, however it is thicker than the last version so the cover doesn't fully close. There is about a 1/2 inch gap at the opening but the cover will still protect the device if you slip it into a side pocket of a purse or backpack. The covered device feels great when held open like a book with the leather exposed on the back or when flipped in half like a magazine and the inside fabric of the cover is what you feel in your hand. . I wanted a basic e-reader and that is what i got. I won't be able to use wikipedia but the dictionary makes up for that. None of the other features interest me nor were they a selling point when i made my purchase. -Z. Kelly

PROS
  • I've been using the kindle (7th gen) for about a week now. I used to use an ipad to read, but i sold that and decided to purchase this kindle because it was on special for $59. I love the size and portability of this device. It is so lightweight and easy to transport. I love the viewing of the screen because i can use it not only inside but outside as well. I have no complaints about this device. I have added a photo to show you guys the size comparison to a standard notebook.
  • I previously had a kindle keyboard that served me dutifully for five years. That is, until my habit of reading in bed before falling asleep ended up with me planting my knee right in the screen in the middle of the night and cracking it. . Looking for a replacement, i didn't really want anything fancy. I just needed a simple e-reader that wouldn't hurt my eyes with the ridiculous amount of time i spend glued to the screen. This kindle isn't all that different from my previous version. I do notice the text seems crisper and consequently slightly easier on my eyes. No, this doesn't have a back light. But i don't really want one. If there's not enough light to read by comfortably, i probably shouldn't be reading in the first place; my eyes get enough abuse as it is. The page turn buttons are gone, but i don't really miss them. It's actually easier to lightly tap the screen as opposed to the buttons on my previous kindle, and makes for a more fluid reading experience. I'm also slightly thankful my old kindle broke and i could justify the purchase of a new one. The touchscreen makes everything so much simpler and faster, especially typing. Thank goodness they don't make the keyboard anymore, haha. Even if i do leave fingerprints everywhere. The internet browser, while hideously slow and really not meant for browsing the internet, is also a bit faster than the previous version. But this is an e-reader. If you're looking for something that does it all, i'd look at the more expensive models. For my purposes, when i just want to look up an article online that i meant to read later, it does just fine. Navigation through the different features is straightforward. Everything's easy to find. Plenty of storage too. . One thing i do miss is the ability to listen to audiobooks. It doesn't seem to have any audio output at all. . So for an entry level e-reader, this is great, and the price is reasonable.
CONS
  • I had another kind of kindle before this one, the one with the keypad at the bottom, the one that allowed pages to be turned by pressing buttons on the side of the kindle. That one was stolen, and i was very disappointed to learn that that style was no longer available. It was so simple to operate, and had none of the extra sensitivity that this touch-screen model has, which frustrates me a lot. You have to touch it with just the right amount of pressure or it does something you don't want it to do. Everything is different about this kindle and i don't like any of the difference. It is not an improvement as far as i am concerned, quite the opposite. But, i had no choice, and i don't like that either. I find it difficult to touch the screen just right and in the right place to go to the "home" site, and an incorrect touch often brings up a message of some sort that i did not want. I've had it for three weeks and still don't feel comfortable with it. Is this enough of a review? one more comment: i hate it!
  • I have been a happy online store customer for over a decade, with a purchase history of six kindles for myself and family, but this touchscreen display kindle is not in any way an "upgrade" from the previous version with buttons on the console. . First, the kindle will, for no reason whatsoever, simply change the font size, usually from my preferred third smallest to the largest or, occasionally, again for no reason whatsoever, to the absolute smallest. It's a pia. . More an obstruction, however, is the sensitivity of the touchscreen. You can touch the right hand portion of the screen with your finger, in order to advance to the next page, but if your finger hovers a second over the screen, it will quickly advance numerous pages (as much as 10-20 pages), which makes determining where the hell you were immensely difficult. I am in the habit of reading my daily new york times on the kindle, and this causes perennial problems. . Another troubling aspect with sensitivity is how, by just holding the kindle, if your thumb or a finger touches the screen, you change the page or call up some feature. . The touchscreen is such a problem that i have considered buying a used older version (that no longer is offered new), but the battery would be so old that battery life would likely be almost non-existent. I know that you can buy replacement batteries but that is a lot of work just to get a decent previous version of a kindle because the newer version is sub-standard. . Online store, you aren't apple. I won't be buying your technology if it's introduced faulty from the get-go, especially when i can use other readers to do what the kindle does. . I am leaving this review with two stars, not because i am pleased with the reader, which i have had for two months, but because i am managing to still use it, despite the impracticalities, although i will buy either a new non-online store replacement or an online store working upgrade soon. . Caveat emptor.
  • I've had a kindle keyboard for years and when it quit on me i bought the new generation 7 touchscreen. I wish you still made the kindle keyboard. I am not at all happy with the new one. The new way you have set up to deal with collections sucks. If you are holding the device in your left hand you have to turn the page with your right hand. That's just a couple of the problems with the generation 7. I talked to one of your chat line people and was told that there have been a lot of complaints about the new "7" and that the engineers are working on a software update to fix some of the problems. My recommendation to you is to make a "new generation" kindle keyboard and make it exactly like the original. You would sell them like hotcakes. I would personally buy a half dozen just so i would never have to go through this again.

kindle ereader glarefree touchscreen Kindle E-reader, 6" Glare-Free Touchscreen Display, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers (Previous Generation – 7th) (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

I've used tablets for years to read my kindle books using the kindle app for android. But recently, i bought a kindle paperwhite for my sight-impaired dad and i liked his so much that i bought a kindle for myself. I'm finding the advantages to reading on a dedicated ereader over an all-purpose tablet well worth it. For one, i've been having a lot of issues lately with eye fatigue from working on the computer all day and reading on my kindle is far easier on my eyes. Reading on a kindle is very similar to reading the paper pages of a physical book. I can see it definitely reducing my eyestrain. . The other thing i like is that the battery on my kindle stays charged so much longer. I had to plug my tablet in every few hours to recharge the battery. It's so much better to read my books anytime i want without having to worry about a low battery, especially when i'm out and about, in the waiting room at the doctor's office, etc. At home, i keep my wifi turned on at all times and the battery still loses only about a fourth of its charge during the day with me reading maybe a couple of hours a day. I turn the wifi completely off on my dad's and he reads mostly all day long and his battery still stays charged three-quarters of the way. Both kindles even came with about a half-a-battery's worth of charge already on them, so you can set-up your kindle before doing an initial charging, which ended up taking only a couple of hours, instead of the four that it recommends for a completely discharged battery. . Initial set-up of your kindle is super easy! if you're an existing kindle user, online store already has you connected to your online store account when you receive your kindle. Even connecting to my home wi-fi was easy. Just remember that if you've got a secured home network, you need to enter your encryption key code not the regular network password. It's a one-time entry. You can then connect and disconnect to your wi-fi at any time and it will remember your network, unless you delete it from your kindle's wi-fi settings. Your user manual is right on your kindle and it contains everything you'll need to know about using your kindle. Also, if you don't have a pc to plug your kindle into to charge it up, you will need to buy a usb wall charger, because all that comes in the box is the kindle and a usb cable. I also ordered the omoton kindle smart case cover, sold here on online store by dealbarn, for both my dad's kindle and mine. They are well-made, lightweight and fit the kindle perfectly. Closing the case cover automatically puts your kindle to sleep, opening wakes it up, so no having to push the on/off button. Easy-peazy! but be sure to order the omoton for the 7th generation kindle, not for the paperwhite, because the 7th gen kindle is just a fraction of an inch wider (4. 7-in as opposed to 4. 6-in for the paperwhite). . I ordered the glare-free kindle (the one without the backlight) with the special-offer ads to save an extra $20 on the purchase price, but i don't mind the advertisements at all. You get a different ad on your splash-screen every time the kindle goes to sleep. They're almost always kindle-related and actually a few of them i've clicked on because they were good deals on kindle books or accessories. And if i want to read at night in the dark, i can always read on my tablet, because you can keep your books synced on all your reading devices with online store's cloud. The only negative about the kindle, and it's not really a negative to me and might not be to you, is that with the glare-free, paperwhite and i think also the voyage kindles, the book pages are black-and-white only - no color - similar to reading a paperback book. However, like i said before, when i do want to read in the dark or see the illustrations in color, i can just read my books on my tablet. So i actually have the best of both worlds! i love my kindle!

Click to see NoticeKindle 6 Inch Previous Generation 7th (b00i15sb16)"I've had this kindle for a while now. Many of the reviews say it all so i don't think i could add much. But i feel like i need to speak on behalf of this kindle to shield it from reviewers and owners who seem to have no idea what they bought. If this could help clear up any confusion for a first time buyer then writing this is worth it. So i have to begin by asking reviewers that confuse us all? . . Do you have any clue what you bought? let's all say it out loud: this kindle does not have a light! it is an entry level model with no light. Online store has always sold non lighted kindles, and i still have many of them. They are a cheap way to get into the e-reader scene. Can you read a real book in the dark? of course not. So these non lighted kindles are not epic failures for not having a light just as the last novel you bought was not an epic failure for not having a built in light. It is ridiculous to buy this kindle then give it a 1 star review because it doesn't have a light. Read the product descriptions. This kindle has no light, the paperwhite and voyage do. . Scream all to the heavens: this kindle does not have page turning buttons! to buy this kindle then give it a 1 star review because your old kindle had page turning buttons and this one does not is insane. Could you not see when you clicked on "buy" that this kindle had no page turning buttons. Sometimes i think there are two kinds of kindle owners: those who want page turning buttons and those who don't mind moving their thumb a nano meter to turn a page. If you can tell by my sarcasm, i belong to the latter bunch. . Then of course there are the technically deficient that have no clue what wifi is, are unable to sign on, and blame it on the kindle. Bam! another 1 star review. Well i feel for you on this one, if you are new to the scene all kindles come wifi ready, ready to sign on to your wifi set up at home. When this is done you can buy book from your kindle or computer. All of your purchases are held in that magical storage space called "the cloud" and you can access those from any kindle registered under your name. . Now for my two cents. This is a great kindle. The software is the latest, similar to the paperwhite. It's quick, has any feature you could ask for from an entry level kindle. I don't understand the hate for touch screen. You should embrace it. See that word on the page you don't know? touch it with your finger and a dictionary pops up giving you the definition. How many clicks on the kindle keyboard would this same function take (still have my keyboard and love it, but probably like one loves an antique typewriter). As far as page turns go, see my nano meter thumb comment above. Once you get used to it it's a piece of cake. Hey, the first time i picked up an iphone to type a text message "how are you? " it came out "lskdlj eiieoi c; ? " you need to acclimate yourself to a touch screen. Once you do those page turning buttons will start to feel like cheap little bits of plastic that will eventually stop working. . Under a lamp or in natural daylight the text is bold and easy to see. Some fonts are bolder than others. This is also a very light kindle. I've found kind of a sweet spot for holding kindles. Pinching the bezel to hold it is awkward. I place the bottom left corner in the middle of my palm, rest the back of it on my four fingers, and tilt it slightly to the left so it doesn't fall in my lap. My thumb is perfectly free to move that nano meter to turn a page. . So let's sum up:. *this kindle does not have a light. *this kindle does not have page turning buttons. *this kindle (like all kindles) has wifi capability. When you are home on your wifi you can buy and download books from the kindle store. If you go to the beach, you cannot. If you want this then get 3g. This is like a cell phone. Personally i've never needed to buy a book outside of my home so never felt the need for 3g. . If this helps one person it was worth typing."

Kindle Paperwhite E-reader - Black, 6 High-Resolution Display 300 ppi Built-in Light, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers

Yes, i really like my new kindle paperwhite e-reader. I already have (dare i say it. ) a nook reader from that other company but - and this is a big deal for me- what i really like about the kindle is that i also now have a membership in the kindle unlimited program. It's like a lending library. I pay a flat fee and can borrow up to ten books at a time. When i'm done reading them (things i want to read but don't want to own or re-read) i can return those borrowed books and get more. I've read through the kindle unlimited catalog (alright, most of it, it's massive) and there are a lot of books i want to read but not necessarily own. I also get a daily email from bookbub listing what books are available for special pricing (somewhere between $2. 99 and free). I've noticed that in many instances books i might to read are available via online store/kindle and not available for my nook. In a bit of irony, i was able to buy a kindle paperwhite how-to manual and a user guide for my nook so when setting up my paperwhite i was able to read the manual on one device to set up the other. As i'm technically challenged i need to see and then do. I need the instructions at hand. I'll definitely keep up my kindle unlimited subscription. That is what i am enjoying. The only wish-it-were-better item i have is that i wish the paperwhite screen was just a little larger. That's all. I've read some of the other comments about turning pages. No issue. Just tap the right side of the screen and you page forward. Tap the left and you page back. It fits into all of my purses. I love it.

Kindle Paperwhite 6 Inch 4gb Ereader (b00oqvzdjm) FAQ.

getting a kindle to read with changed my life. For 50 + years i read a book every 2 days or less. As my eyes got worse, for many reasons, i just had to quit. Reading a paperback was hard and after 10 minutes of reading i simply gave up. With a kindle i can adjust the font style and size and read for hours a day. The best straight forward reading tablet i previously owned is the kindle paperwhite 2013 version. This new release improves in an area that i want and one that i paid to upgrade my tablet for. The new 2015 screen has 300 ppi versus 212 ppi for the 2013 version and the screen resolution is almost twice as good as the older kindle. The change is from 768x1024 to 1072x1448 pixels and that is a tremendous improvement and luxury for those with older eyes. . One downside is that the new kindle paperwhite does have a lower battery life when compared to the previous generation. The battery life has dropped from 8 weeks at ½ hour of reading per day to 6 weeks at ½ hour of reading per day. That is due to the additional energy required for the higher resolution screen and the power to render the higher resolution of text. I don't like the reduced reading time but for me this was not a big deal as it is still 21 hours of reading time (it was 28 hours on the 2013 version) and it charges quickly in 4 hours. Heck, my expensive ipad battery only lasts about 8 hours and the eyestrain is pretty tough to handle using the ipad for more than 30 minutes to read. Some people may not like this but i just recharge my kindles every three or four days. Since the unit has a lower battery life i do believe that online store should have included a usb charger as someone that travels may not be carrying a laptop computer with them to charge the kindle paperwhite. This omission of a usb charger is still a sore point with many people. I wish online store would just raise the price $10 and include the charger as a standard feature! . . I have added a video of the kindle paperwhite 2013 compared to a kindle paperwhite 2015 and a kindle keyboard. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me and i will try to answer them. . Things to do with your new kindle paperwhite:. . * get a simple light weight case that will turn off the screen when you close the cover. It will help save on your battery life and protect your tablet. * enter in a device pass code to protect your tablet in case you lose your tablet. This prevents someone from using your tablet and even from buying books using your account. * yes you can use just about any usb charger for this kindle paperwhite. I use the one that came with my kindle keyboard unit and it works fine. . I own multiple kindle fires, hp tablets and apple ipads and android tablets but the best reading device is a kindle paperwhite. Why? it is simply because i can read it outside in the sunlight, inside and at night with reduced eyestrain when compared to any other tablet i own. It is the read anyplace best tablet for reading hands down champion! . . I just love this new tablet. It offers the perfect balance of a lit screen with reduced eyestrain and high clarity and contrast of the text and a good price. It is truly a step up to a better reading device. The new reading font called bookerly is very good for my eyes. It is crisper and bolder on the screen and i can read for longer times than before. Toss in the higher screen resolution and you have a new reading experience. . I am always looking for improvements in the text and screen quality as for me that is a major issue. The print on the screen is blacker and crisper and it is easier on my eyes. Side by side with my kindle paperwhite 2013 the older paperwhite text looks grey and the screen slightly yellow in comparison to this newer version. There definitely is a good improvement and that relates to more reading comfort for my eyes! . . This newer 2015 paperwhite has a few new features that i like:. . * 300 ppi versus older 2013 paperwhite at 212 ppi. * new reading font bookerly that is bolder and designed for use on a digital screen. * 4 gb of memory versus my 2013 version that was launched with 2 gig (not enough for me). . Reading was my number one hobby my entire life and i just loved it. The kindle has brought back that reading experience and now with the crisper text, better font and no glare lit screen i can enjoy my reading in every type of environment. In my video i compare the kindle keyboard, kindle paperwhite 2013 and the kindle paperwhite 2015 side by side. The improvements are amazing. . The new screen clarity is where this paperwhite design really is outstanding. With better contrast, lighting and custom designed fonts, the text just pops out of the screen like you have not seen in an e-reader before. With 300 ppi (pixels per inch) this screen provides a 1072 by 1448 pixel screen that just makes the old kindle screens look old fashioned. . My favorite time to read is the last two hours of the evening before bedtime. I also read during the day during breaks and even at my grandson's outdoor swim meets. It is impossible to read in the sunlight with a kindle fire or an ipad. There is simply too much glare. At night time the kindle paperwhite soft lit screen is unobtrusive and for me my eyes do not get tired of reading like they do on the kindle fire and on the ipad. I can actually read for hours without the same eyestrain i get with other tablets. You also have adjustable brightness to suit your own comfort levels and ambient conditions. . There are multiple font sizes and you can pinch and zoom on the kindle paperwhite screen to expand the font size or decrease it like you do on a powerful tablet, this is a great feature. There are 7 different font styles and they are baskerville, bookerly, futura, caecilia, helvetica, caecilia condensed and palatino. I think my favorite is bookerly. I love the new dictionary feature that creates a vocabulary builder which is a list of the words that you looked up and you can review the list and use flashcards to enhance your vocabulary and reading skills. . There is a minor learning curve of learning where to touch the screen if you are transitioning from a much older kindle tablet but the changeover was fast and easy. The capacitive touch response of the screen is very nice. It makes the new paperwhite respond quickly to finger touches, menu changes and page turns. What i like about the kindle paperwhite is that it is a dedicated e-reader and it combines the best features of the kindle e-ink and the ipad/kindle fire. . * ultra lightweight at 7. 2 ounces and easily held for hours with one hand. I love the size and weight as it is comfortable to hold for long periods of time and you don't find yourself laying down the paperwhite like i would be doing with my ipads. What i love is that it still weighs 7. 2 ounces with 1000 books loaded into it! . * lit screen for reading in poorly lighted areas like the ipad and kindle fire but without the eyestrain. The lighting level is adjustable. * high clarity of the text and contrast for easy reading. The screen has 16 levels of gray scale available. * fast charging time in 4 hours. * ability to be easily read in the sunlight with no screen glare. * wifi connectability. * battery life of 21 hours (of reading time) depending on the wifi usage and screen brightness used. You can turn off your wifi to prolong the battery life. This specification dropped from 28 hours on the kindle paperwhite 2013 version. * touch screen control. * easy page turning and access to the onboard dictionary, access to wikipedia and x-ray. * easy to access menu and setup was a breeze. * fast response for loading books and page turning thanks to a faster microprocessor. * small, thin and highly portable. * able to carry 3, 400 books. * my favorite feature is the adjustable text size and font style! . * custom tuned fonts add clarity and crispness to the quality of the displayed text. * since i review a lot of books i love to highlight sections and text as well as take notes on the screen. * translation of foreign language that is used in the book. * web surfing is possible but still slower than a good tablet. Who cares, this is my portable ebook reader with 3, 400 books in it (depending on the book file size). I have other devices to browse the web and read my email. * i like the rubberized feel of the back and it is similar to my kindle fire. It makes the kindle paperwhite easy to grip and hold with one hand and just have it lay in the palm of my hand without a case. . This tablet gives me the best reading conditions in the daytime and also in the night. It has a lot of great features but i wanted to post a review that provides a strong comparison between the new kindle paperwhite and the last kindle paperwhite 2013 version. . -kindle paperwhite 2013-kindle paperwhite 2015. Screen size: - 6 inch-6 inch. Screen ppi-212-300. Resolution: -768x1024-1072x1448. Weight: -7. 3 ounces-7. 2 ounces per the manual. Overall size: -6. 7"x4. 6"x0. 36"-6. 7"x4. 6"x0. 36. Battery life in hours of reading: 28 hours-21 hours. Charging time: -4 hours-4 hours. Eyestrain: -none under all reading conditions-none. Memory: -2 gig -4 gig with 3 gig available for the user. Number of books: -1, 100-3, 400 approximately. Included charger: -no-no. Wifi connectability: -fast and easy-fast and easy. Speakers: -no-no. . Other considerations:. * no distraction from email. * no distractions from text messages. * no distractions from phone calls. . Pros:. * you can use a capacitive stylus on the screen to help keep the screen clean. * great battery life and fast charging. * perfect form factor for size and weight for a hand held portable e-reader. * i don't need to use the stupid book light that never worked well anyway! . * faster page tuning which for me really makes a difference. * connection to the wifi was fast and easy. * downloading my book library was fast and easy. * even though the screen has slight texture to it is does not show fingerprints as bad as a glossy screen like a kindle fire or an ipad. * increase of the standard memory size to 4 gig from the older versions 2 gig. . Cons:. . * the battery life has dropped from 8 weeks at ½ hour of reading per day to 6 weeks at ½ hour of reading per day (roughly 28 hours to 21 hours). That is due to the additional energy required for the higher resolution screen and the power to render the higher resolution of text. For me this was not a big deal as it is still 21 hours of reading time and it charges quickly in 4 hours. * it still costs extra money for an ac wall adapter. It comes with a usb to micro usb cable that you can use for charging and connecting to any ac usb wall adapter or computer usb port. I don't need another usb power adapter but not getting one just makes online store look cheap in not supplying one with the product. * they charge extra money to remove push ads to your kindle paperwhite. * no speakers and no ability to have the book read aloud to you using text to speech. . Summary:. Overall considering all the issues this is a great e-reader. It is the best available at this time when you consider the price and the features. So far i have not been able to justify the price jump to $199 for the kindle voyage for the small differences with the new kindle paperwhite. I do feel that online store always gives some things and takes away others. Things like text to speech, speakers and ac wall chargers disappear from new products and sometimes return in others. I also don't care for the ads still being pushed in our faces. This is still a solid 5 star product and you can't go wrong with buying one. It is just that sometimes the things you lose seem to mean more to users than to online store. I don't mind them saving some money but raise the price $10 and put in all the features that users will need like a charger. . This kindle paperwhite is still working well. Best ereader available. -Notice from . Campbell, Bournemouth

I had the previous paperwhite and liked it well enough but ended up losing it somewhere. My only quibbles with it were that the lighting was somewhat uneven, darkening towards the bottom, and that the text wasn't as sharp as i'd like. Both of those things surprised me somewhat, but the advantages still made this far better for reading than an ipad, computer, etc. . With this new version, the lighting is perfectly uniform and the text perfectly sharp. Yes! so for me the paperwhite is an absolute home run that actually makes me glad i lost my last one. The upgrade is actually huge imo. . What's great about the paperwhite in general:. 1) light and easy to hold. 2) backlighting is less jarring than a typical tablet making reading more pleasant in general. 3) works out doors in the direct sun. 4) many days between charges. 5) less fragile, less heavy and thus more easily portable than tablets etc. 6) and now crisp sizable text and perfect screen uniformity

- K. KellyOnline store help pages actually tell you that you can't use borrowed library e-books with the children's freetime feature that let's you track the amount of time they read each day (see attached image). In fact, even some customer service representatives tell you it can't be done. . Luckily, it can. And it makes for a wonderful combination for parents who want to track their kids' reading while still taking advantage of free library loans. . Here are the steps after having checked out the book:. 1. Go to "manage your content and devices". 2. Click on the "actions" button (labeled ". ") next to the library-borrowed book. 3. Choose "manage family library". 4. A small dialogue box should pop up with your child's freetime profile. Click the "add to library" button next to it. 5. Sync the paperwhite. And the book shows up in their freetime account! . . I've confirmed this with a borrowed e-book on my son's paperwhite. . Now online store needs to update their help pages and give these instructions.

I love my kindles. I have had two basic readers with the keyboard under the screen. When my last reader died, i was just going to get another. I liked the buttons at the side to move through the pages, i like the size of that kindle, i love the fact that i could read in bright sunlight, but then i saw the paperwhite with the built-in light and thought maybe it was time to trade up. . When my latest kindle with keyboard died, i began using my kindle fire for reading. It works. It has a nice, big screen, but it's heavy to be reading in bed with - like the difference between a hard-bound book and a paperback - and because it's a tablet rather than a reader, it eats up that battery life much, much faster. Oh yeah, and the lit screen also lit up the bedroom. . This reader is smaller than the original kindle and it has a smaller screen, but, it is also lighter and it has that built-in light. I haven't had it out in the sunshine, but it is advertised to have a clear, readable screen even in bright sunlight and i'm sure it does. The pages turn easily with a touch at the edge of the screen, and the function menu drops down from the top of the screen. I haven't really played with it much to see what i else i can do other than pick a book and read it, but it seems to have all the bells and whistles necessary, and then some. It came with a half-charged battery. I've been using it for a week and i haven't noticed that available battery indicator move. . For those who compare the $120 spent on a kindle paperwhite with the price of a book - don't. I have a kindle library with hundreds of books in it. A paperback will cost you between $7. 00 and $13. 00. It doesn't take a math genius to figure out how many books it would take to meet the price of a kindle paperwhite. For me that's about 4-6 weeks of reading material, so i guess you can say that i read for free for the rest of the life of the kindle paperwhite. And, you can carry all those books with you when you travel in this one little, light-weight, reader. . I'm a fan and will buy another when this one dies, i'm sure. Now i just have to buy it a jacket.

Got these for my kids and they love them of course! now for the parents concerns i definitely recommend these fire tablets strictly because of the control you have over children's access along with with strict guidelines you can set for your child's time on the tablets. You can set up the child's profiles to where they have time limits and it automatically shuts them out. Also, you can set it up where they have to do something educational for certain times before they access other apps. Parents can also block sites, apps etc along with monitor what they are doing exactly at that moment from your tablet wherever you are. So yes love these tablets.

- Z. Carolyn online store has just updated their bargain priced fire tablets. While these latest models are only slightly better than the preceding generation, i believe that they still represent the absolute best value tablet on the market. It s still hard for me to adjust to the fact that a tablet device can now be purchased for just fifty bucks, and it s such a good all-around performer (for the most part)! . . I purchased both the 7" and 8" fire models because i wanted to see how they compared, and i was curious how they performed. They are both shown in the video attached to this review. I will focus here on the 7" model, to try to help the potential buyer decide whether or not the more expensive 8" fire tablet is worth the extra money (and if the 7" model is worth purchasing on its own merits). . I've given this 7" model a 4-star rating after further consideration and largely because of the very mediocre quality sound output (see detailed comments below). It is still a terrific bargain at the price, but i do want to be clear that it is not ideal for all uses. . Summary. . - these new models represent minimal changes compared to the previous generation fire tablets:. - same display specs as before (online store says the 7 model has an improved display), same processors (1. 3 ghz quad-core but a newer model that is probably slightly faster in operation), same standard and available storage (7 8 or 16 gb; 8 16 or 32 gb). - new colors. - the 8 model is $10 cheaper. - the 7 model now has dual band wi-fi (previously single band wi-fi) for better connectivity. - kids edition now available for both models (previously only the 7 model). Note that the kids edition is only sold with the higher storage (7 16 gb; 8 32 gb). - both models can use up to 256 gb microsdxc expansion storage (previously max 128 gb for 7 ). - both models offer online store s alexa digital assistant at the touch of a button. - both models are physically the same size as previously but slightly lighter the 8 has lost 1 oz of weight, the 7 is 0. 6 oz lighter. . - both 7 and 8 models are suitable for:. - web surfing using online store s silk browser. - watching streaming movies or tv shows *. - listening to music *. - reading kindle books (the 7 is roughly the same size as a kindle). - playing games and other apps (within the limitation of online store's own ecosystem). - kid use both offer the ability to set up child accounts with restricted access. - * note comments below regarding sound quality and volume, particularly for the 7" model. . - in addition, the 8 fire has:. - slightly larger and higher quality display (but i found both displays to be essentially equivalent in quality). - larger standard storage (16 gb vs 8 gb). - better sound dolby audio, stereo (7 has mono speaker) *. - larger battery / longer life between charges (online store states up to 12 hours, vs up to 8 hrs for the 7 ). - * note comments below regarding sound quality and volume, particularly for the 7" model. . - what don t they do and what are their limitations? . - neither model will display 1080p video. - camera specs are poor compared to most current phone and higher priced tablets, so don t expect high resolution photos. - sound quality and volume ability is a limitation - see next paragraph. - with limited built in storage, they both rely upon the expansion slot to store larger amounts of photos, videos, or music. Responsiveness using memory from the expansion slot is not quite the same as with a tablet that has greater hard wired storage built-in. - all fire models are limited to using online store s own silk web browser, which is less flexible than the regular chrome or firefox browsers that can be used on regular android or apple tablets. . - the sound quality and maximum volume capability is a weak point. - accepting the fact that these are very low cost tablets, they do offer the ability to listen to videos and music and so the built-in speakers will be relied upon by many users. In my opinion the most significant difference between these two fire models, aside from the screen size, is the difference in sound quality. But i first want to say that neither model has the ability to provide much volume of sound, even at the very highest setting. This is a disappointment. - the 7" fire has a single speaker located on the rear of the device, near the bottom. It is weak and produces a very low quality sound. Also, depending on how you are holding the tablet, or if you're using a case to hold it in landscape or portrait mode, the speaker could be covered and even further muffled. - the 8" hd fire has better quality sound - two stereo speakers located on the side, positioned so that they will be at the top when the tablet is supported in landscape mode. It also has better sound processing ('dolby atmos'), and the sound quality is noticeably better than the 7". Still, the maximum volume capability is modest. - bottom line - if you plan to use either model for listening to music or videos, then ear pods or headphones or an external speaker is probably going to be necessary in order to get satisfactory sound. Sound quality is not going to be something owners of these small fire tablets will be bragging about. . - my impressions of both models and how they compare. I purchased both models and illustrate them side by side in my video. They re obviously very similar in feel and appearance, and the quality is excellent. I also like the matching online store cases that protect the screen when not in use and prop the tablet in either landscape or portrait orientation to make it easy to set it on a table to read or watch videos. The cases work exactly the same for both sizes. . The display is the most obvious difference not only size, but the slightly greater display content and resolution. At least that is what the online store specs suggest, but to my eyes they are both pretty much the same. I did find that the 7" model seemed to have a slightly brighter display, and the 'whiteness' of the display also seemed to be better. . The other difference i wanted to evaluate was the sound quality, since the 7" model has only a single speaker and the 8" model has two (stereo) speakers with dolby sound processing. For anyone using this tablet for watching videos or listening to music, i thought that would be an important difference. . What i found, as also mentioned elsewhere in this review and with respect to the sound quality, was that the limited volume ability of the built-in speakers makes ear pods or headphones or the use of an external speaker almost mandatory. If those considerations are acceptable, then the higher price of the 8" model is probably well worthwhile for users who will use the table very much to listen to music or videos. . For reading kindle books or those who prefer the smaller and lighter size, the 7 model is just great (either model is fine, really). . By comparison, the latest small ipad mini has a 7. 0 display and is roughly between the 7 and 8 fire tablets in size (width and height), quite a bit thinner, and about the same weight as the 7 fire. It s considerably more powerful and has 128 gb storage standard, but think about it you can purchase eight 7 fire tablets for the price of a single ipad mini today! that is really a striking difference. . Further thoughts. . These two models are the 7th generation online store fire tablet the first generation was introduced in november, 2011 as the kindle fire, offering the same screen size and resolution but a considerably less powerful processor, and selling for $199. Along the way they ve offered models of various sizes and specifications, and for a short time (generations 3 and 4) their fire models included the more sophisticated (and expensive) fire hdx model that may have been intended to be a more direct competitor to apple s ipad. . Then, in september 2015, online store introduced the $49. 99 fire 7, and since that time it seems that they ve been happy to offer these bargain priced tablets that do everything that most people really need on a day-to-day basis. They make great kids tablets, too, particularly the kids edition models that come with the more protective case and 2-year replacement guarantee, just in case your kid drops it in the, ah, swimming pool or some such! . . Warranty. . The standard warranty for both fire models is a short 90-days. Longer warranties - 1, 2 or 3 years - are available at extra cost ($10. 99, $14. 99, $16. 99 respectively). Compared to most devices this is a very short standard warranty. . Camera quality. . Both fire models have a 2 mp rear-facing 'hd' camera, and a 'vga' front-facing 0. 3 mp camera. These are very mediocre cameras compared to just about any smart phone or tablet currently available and anyone wanting to take photos or videos with their tablet is not going to be satisfied with the quality that can be obtained from these fire models, but they do suffice if all you want is to take a photo to make a visual note of something for future reference. . Included accessories. . Both fire models include a 5w wall charger and a very short usb cable (just over 3 ft long). . As with pretty much all online store fire and kindle models these days, you can purchase either of these tablets either with or without special offers . The $15 difference in price eliminates the ads that show when the screen is locked (but disappear when unlocked). . For anyone who wants a smaller and lighter weight tablet, these fire models have become the logical choice. The prices are now so low that they can be a casual purchase for many people, not quite disposable but something easy to pass on when the next new model comes out. . I will continue to add more details here as i use these tablets more and have thoughts and comments to share.

Much improved screen! . . It turns out that the $49. 95 fire 7 version released two years ago didn't have an ips screen. . Now it does. . Technically, both the old one and this new one are just 171 ppi (pixels per inch) but this one seems much "crisper" than the first generation "$49-er". . My eyes don't lie. Ips makes the screen a lot crisper! . . There's also a stunning improvement in color quality with the new screen. Now it holds its own with the 62% color gamut original ipad mini; before, it wasn't anywhere near. . Mind you it's not current apple screen quality, or current high-end samsung screen quality - but what is? it's only $49. 95, and it's good enough. Heck, at $49. 95, its more than "good enough", it's great. It blows away just about any entry level consumer laptop screen, that's for sure. . I pulled out my 2015 first-gen, $49. 95 fire 7 - the one this replaces - and placed it side by side with this new one. The colors (including a horrific green tint on white backgrounds) on the old one weren't video-worthy - ok for casual videos on facebook and youtube, maybe, but not good enough for netflixing and online store prime. . This new one, though? it's movie-worthy, especially with earphones (ok, only with earphones). I'd prefer 720p over the fire 7's 600p (600p is better than 480p dvd's, but not ask good as even entry-level - 720p - hdtv quality), but overall even at 600p it's eminently watchable. . By the way, for me streaming video content on online store prime instant video has been noticeably sharper than streaming youtube. I think online store prime adapts to 600p (max for this tablet) while youtube is is probably delivering only 480p (remember youtube's defaults are 360p/480p/720p and up). . So the short-and-sweet advice is try this out on your favorite video sources when you get it, and make sure you are getting the video quality you want; also, use netflix's fast dot com web site to check your internet download speeds. If they aren't high, even online store prime won't be able to deliver sharp video. . Tip: due to the limited 1gb of onboard ram, try not to multi-task for zippy performance. After my fire os updates were completed (which slows down everything while they are downloading), there was no lag in any app, so long as i wasn't background running another app (like music). . Tip: there's only one really usable brightness setting, and that's all the way up. This is not a screen with "extra" brightness in reserve. The best tablet experience with this is setting the brightness level to "11. ". . Tip: if you don't have a spare lying around, order this with at least a 16gb class 10/uh1 micro sd card (i like samsung evo select currently under $15 for 32gb). Go into settings (or follow the alert that pops up) and have apps and content default store to the micro sd card - online store now allows downloaded videos and books to go there, making the 8gb model very usable. At just $49. 95 and with the ability to download both netflix and online store prime movies and tv, you shouldn't fly without this. . Tip: there's only $10 difference between the 16gb version of this new fire 7, and the entry level of the brand new 2017 fire hd 8 - which already comes with 16gb, plus 1. 5 gb ram vs. 1gb on the fire 7, plus actual hd video quality (720p). So for a mere $10 more you get a whole lot more. . Of course if you can live with 8gb storage - i have my tricks! - nothing beats $49. 95. . Tip: great for kids since online store says it survives drops better than even an ipad mini, and online store has the best kid control settings in the business. $49. 95 vs. A couple hundred dollars counts for a lot too. But apple continues to rule the roost in terms of maximum number of education and game apps for kids. . Tip: the speaker is adequate especially if you cup your hands behind it to reflect the sound forward. But you are better served by a budget online storebasics bluetooth speaker, or by earphones. The online storebasics won't sound that much better, but it will be easier to hear and easier to hold the tablet; with earphones, you'll think the tablet cost several hundred dollars! (that's thanks to the magic earphones work vs. Tiny built in speakers on any tablet. ). . Tip: screen resolution is about the same as the entry-level online store kindle e-reader, so apart from the e-reader's unparalleled ability to deal with bright sunlight without washing out the screen, you are probably better off with this more versatile $49. 95 fire 7 table than the $59. 95 (current sale price) e-reader. . Tip: "blue light control" saves your sleeping if you kindle read a lot; just select the option from the swipe-down menu on the home screen. . Kudos: really compact, useful, and safe charger (it's online store, not mystery-sourced). It only puts out 5 watts (some phone chargers on low-end phones actually put out less! ) but it's plenty for the modest battery in this $49. 95 tablet. It seems very well built, works with the other phones and tablets i have (both apple and android), and the cable (detachable) that comes with it feels really solid and sturdy. Nothing flimsy or fly by night here. . Caveat: you do know this won't run classic google apps or apple apps (like music), right? (yeah some users "hack" it do do so, but i'm talking about the rest of us. ) this limitation is just online store going it's own way. Fire os is a legal "clone" of android 5. 1. 1, a solid android release, with online store "skinning" (putting its own book cover on) the usual android home screen etc. Online store has been very good about security and version updates with fire os, but i and many others long for the day, hopefully not too far in the future, when online store bites the bullet and releases regular android on an online store tablet. And, btw, when that day comes, i hope it's still $49. 95, but gets a bump to 720p. What a sales success that would be! (and by all accounts online store already has huge sales success with fire tablets. ). . Kudos: alexa! you have to hold the button though, it's not always listening like a standalone alexa speaker. . This is 5 star if you don't care about google and are a big online store fan, 3 star if you love google apps and think online store turns the fire line into "all online store shopping, all the time" sales tool, and for me about 4. 5 star based on its price, build quality, and durability. A good $49. 95 tablet is now great thanks to the ips addition to the screen!

I already have a kindle e-reader and bought this while it was on sale for prime day. I love this device that much. There is an user guide and dictionary in the device library. A booklover's new best friend thin and light for one-handed reading the all new kindle is 11% thinner and 16% lighter than the previous generation kindle, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving text and image quality. Battery lasts weeks, not hours kindle doesn t need power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge. Unlike tablets, no blue light to disturb your sleep recent studies have shown that evening exposure to blue light from devices with backlit screens like tablets and smartphones can suppress the body s production of melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that helps the body fall asleep. Love the new kindle! priced right (with an extra $20 off! ), even smaller in my hands than the kindle with keyboard. I was sad to lose my old kindle, but this one is just terrific.

IKross Black Dual LED Clip-On Reading Light Nook, eBook Readers, Tablet, Book, Textbook more

I do want to start by saying this a very nice light and i would recommend it to anyone looking for such a device. With that being said there are two things to consider. 1) the control for low/high is very loose. I do not believe mine is defective in anyway it is just pretty clear you will have to engage with it to make sure it is set to low if you want. It does not have a very clear feeling on the knob between the two setting. It takes maybe an extra 2 seconds but again this is just for clarity sake. 2) the clasp is a bit unusual as it will stop being able to grab pages when you have about 50-60 pages left in a book if it's paperback. It just is not designed starting with zero gap. With this very very very minor gripes aside i have been very pleased so far. Give it a try!

A durable long-lasting book light that is very convenient to use and store. It allows your night reading / writing easily. A book light that is bright easy to carry. A suggested book light for night reading or writing and or on the go. Simply clip on your reading device, tablet, and or notebooks. A smart intelligent compact design. Useful for: e readers such as nook, kobo and more tablets such as ipad pro, ipad air, samsung galaxy tab and more laptops notebooks computers textbooks books magazines & much more low power lighting 3 soft white lower power usage led's for broader lighting that will maximize battery life. Shielded to reduce glare and help diffuse light adjustable brightness off / weak / or high brightness switch make it easy to conserve power and make the most of the battery life flexible gooseneck can be moved and positioned for better angles and targeted lighting that will not obstruct the screen slim & compact design lightweight and easy to carry in bags, purses, or toolboxes. Ikross Reading Readers Tablet Textbook (885157913584) FAQ.

I've had about every kind of clip-on light ever made and none has been even close to this one. I'm a dedicated reader and hate it when there is not enough light available. I bought this one to clip onto the cover of my kindle. Didn't really expect it to be all that good but. Oh well, the price was right. Was i ever surprised. It is bright on bright and provides excellent reading light even at its low setting. If you are looking for a clip-on reading light for your kindle this is the bargain of the year for sure. Delivery was prompt as well. Enjoy! -Notice from Z. Clara, Blackpool

I have been using the light for 2 weeks. Works great. The reading light arrived in about a week intact and working very good as advertised. I use a book cover on my new kindle 7th generation and the mounting clip for the light would not open wide enough to include the kindle and the front and back thicknesses of the cover. So i had to squeeze the mounting clip inside the cover and mount directly to the kindle. It was difficult to push/force the battery compartment inside the back of the cover. I may wind up cutting a rectangular clearance notch in the back of the cover for the battery compartment of the light. The light switch for the two light intensities works great. I have found that the light glares off my kindle screen, especially on high intensity setting. When this happens i either tilt the kindle toward me, switch to the lower intensity or position the light off to either side and twist the light itself so any glare is directed to the opposite side and not at me. I use 1 or 2 medium strength rubber bands around the whole kindle to hold the light down against the kindle for traveling. Excellent value for the price.

Ikross-reading-readers-tablet-textbook-(885157913584) set picture

- R. ImeldaGreat little light! i have a smaller kindle and my husband has a larger one and it works for both. It is small enough that i can just throw it in my travel bag and it doesn't take up too much space. I can also clip it on to my laptop if i need some extra light. Haven't had it long enough to talk about battery life but even with aaa batteries it is still lightweight. It is very bright on the high setting so i have mainly used the low setting. I'm thinking of getting a second one so that i don't have to share with my husband!

Great seller, very fast delivery. . The light itself is good. It's bulkier than i would prefer, but i'm used to my old skool kindle case with a built-in light. I wish they still made those, but they don't, so this will have to do.

Elsse For Kindle 7th Gen, 6 Glare-Free Touchscreen Display - Folio Case Cover Kindle 7th Generation , Black - will fit previous generation Kindle devices

Fits like a glove on my kindle 7th gen, 6'. Be very careful to buy the correct cover for your kindle - they vary in size and shape depending on the generation. If you're not sure, go here: the difference is mainly in the shape - there is a photo sensor that wakes up your kindle when you open the cover and puts it to sleep when you close it. If you get the wrong cover that sensor will not work so you might end up having your kindle on even though the case is closed and you're not using it. This will drain the battery and the more you charge it, the more you shorten your battery life. . A part from that, the cover is real leather and good quality. It has a little pocket on the side where you can store loose cash or a credit card when you're out on the beach. The cover closes with a little button that is tight enough not to open on its own. And best of all - this cover is only a fraction of the cost of the equivalent online store version. I haven't seen the original but i doubt the any increase in quality can justify tripling the price.

Protects your kindle with just enough padding and remains the light weight.

- U. GuestI love this cover. It looks great and keeps the kindle protected. I would buy it again to give as a gift. It's a great product and fits perfectly.

This fits wonderfully, i love love this case. It looks much more expensive than it actually is. Bought one for my mother too and she loves it! when you close the case, it puts the kindle into sleep mode which i love. Have had it for 8 months now with pretty regular wear and tear with no issues.

Protective Cover Kindle Generation (53 003140) FAQ.

This is a 'barely-there' cover in that it protects the kindle without adding much bulk. The cover folds back flat and flush. The only problem is that it doesn't have any way to hold itself closed. If you need it to stay closed, you'll have to use a rubberband or something. -Notice from C. Kristen, Arizona

Keeps the kindle pretty protected and i love that it snaps in but i don't like that the cover just kind of flaps open. I keep it closed with a ponytail holder and i think it makes it look kinda tacky but it works and i don't know what else to use. It should come with a thing to keep it closed. I like the texture of it and the purple is a really good color but it gets marks kinda easily.

Protective-cover-kindle-generation-(53-003140) set picture

- M. CampbellI needed the cover for protection as i wish to carry the kindle in my purse. The cover fits perfectly and when you close the flap, the kindle goes to sleep. Nice protection and all of the buttons are accessible.

This cover is perfectly functional. The design is simple which is what i wanted, and it adds just enough weight to this super light kindle which i bought recently and am still adjusting to (in contrast to the older models that were a little heavier). I'm fine with it. All that said, i wish i had noticed in the pictures that the online store logo branded on the front bottom corner was there; i probably would not have bought it if i'd seen that first.

The F.A.Q. for kindle e-reader, 6 glare-free touchscreen display, wi-fi - includes special offers previous generation 7th

E-book readers occupy a very unique corner of the technology industry. While every other form of technology benefits from better performance and higher specs, this rule does not apply nearly as much to e-book readers. Just give me something that shows me words in black and white. This is why the base model kindle shines and is, in my opinion, the best kindle currently available. . I am coming from the first generation paperwhite. I actually had a very negative experience with it. The first problem i had was with the build quality. The bezels on the paperwhite were very poorly glued on, sitting slightly askew. The uneven lighting didn t help either. I m pretty ocd about things being perfect, and these aspects really bothered me. Furthermore, the rubberized coating felt pretty terrible when my hands got a little sweaty. Overall, i was not satisfied with my paperwhite. . The new 7th generation kindle solves most of the problems i had with the paperwhite. The bezels are much more evenly glued on with this kindle. The lack of an uneven front light is also an improvement in my book. The material used for the kindle is a hard, textured plastic, which i actually find much nicer than the paperwhite s material. The thicker edges make it easier to hold while reading, and it actually feels more like a real book for some reason. . There s small details that i appreciate as well, such as the kindle logo being black. This makes it nicer to read with, as the kindle icon blends in with the rest of the bezel. I originally thought the new kindle had a capacitive touch screen, and it was almost a deal breaker for me when i realized it was infrared. However, the touch screen is actually much better than i expected. It is implemented very well in this device, and it is as responsive as on the paperwhite. The bottom bezel is also bigger than the paperwhite s, making it a good place to rest my thumb while using the kindle. . As for the new kindle voyage, my main gripe is the price. There s no way i m spending $200 for a single purpose device. The glass display also means it doesn t have the lay on the table design inherent to the standard kindle. I don t care too much about the higher ppi or haptic feedback or any of its other selling points. . I purchased my unit on black friday for $50 from best buy. At that price, this thing is a steal and is almost an impulse buy. As long as you're ok without a built in light on your e-reader, the basic kindle is highly recommended. I guess there s a reason half of all kindles are purchased as presents, but that s not for me to talk about in this review.

A number of questions have been asked here.

There are nearly 2000 reviews already written on this device. We wouldn't have bothered to add our comments except that some of the reviews that come up first because they are suppose to be the most helpful. Have what seems to be inaccurate information. We have had a "kindle keyboard" for years now and we subscribe to both prime and kindle unlimited. We still love the "keyboard" which for those who are unfamiliar is actually a "third generation" kindle which was originally released at the end of july in 2010. Even after four years the "keyboard" is still quite useful and the battery is still strong. In addition to being a normal e-reader it also has audio output. It can read books to you and play mp3 files. It is a quality device and if taken care of. It will last a long time. Our experience with it is the primary reason we trust products with the online store name to be quality items. . We actually love our newest little kindle which is actually a "seventh generation". We weren't planning on buying one because our "keyboard" is still going strong, but there was a promotion where it was $20 off and it came with a 6 month extension to our "kindle unlimited" subscription which was $30 off. So our plan was to not open it and then sell it on ebay and keep the 6 month extension to our "kindle unlimited" subscription. But curiosity got the best of us. So a few hours after it arrived we opened the box and took it for a spin and a side-by-side comparison with our beloved "keyboard". . So first. What did we find inaccurate in the other reviews. The screen, it does give a very good first impression. Online store and nearly every reviewer claim that it is whiter, brighter and has better contrast than previous generations of kindles. We have always been happy with the screen on our "kindle keyboard" and were not sure why it needed any "improvements". When we put our kindle keyboard next to the new kindle under the same light to us the screens look nearly identical. The only real difference we noticed is that the font on the new one seems more refined and is better to look at. Not only that. There are several fonts to choose from. Side by side there is no question that a book on the screen of this latest generation kindle looks better than a book on the "keyboard" because of the new fonts, but to us the screen itself doesn't appear any lighter, whiter, brighter or have higher contrast. We have tablets with high resolution screens with incredible color, contrast and brightness, but we have always appreciated our older kindle because it's screen is as close to a paper book that we have found. So we are more than a little relieved that the "improvements" to the screen are pretty much all hype. The screen does refresh quicker than our 4 year old "keyboard" to the point where it is hardly noticeable when changing pages but to us it is the new fonts that make the experience better. . The next thing we noticed is that even though we are used to clicking buttons to navigate on the "keyboard" the touchscreen really is much faster and less frustrating. I can't tell you how many times we have been clicking the down arrow repeatedly to get to a menu item on the "kindle keyboard" and then accidentally have touched the back button which is right below it and literally had to start all over. Even after all of these years. It still happens fairly frequently. . Then there is the "home button" and page turning buttons that some people seem to think that they cannot live without. We don't get it. On the "keyboard" we do like the dedicated buttons, without them navigating would be a bear, but with the touch screen. They really are not necessary. For example. To get to your "home screen" you tap at the top of the touch screen, then you touch the "home icon" in the top left corner and you are there. To change pages you can either swipe forward or back or just touch the edge of the screen. Personally, we prefer to use one of those little rubber tipped tablet pointers so we won't get finger prints on the screen but as long as you haven't been eating some kind of greasy food it is not much of an issue. . We also like the newer software combined with the touch screen and faster processor. Everything feels smoother and more intuitive as compared to the "keyboard". We have to admit that we use our expensive tablets a lot with the kindle reading app especially with books that have color pictures. So we are used to navigating with touch screen devices with powerful processors, but there is something about the kindle e-reader experience that we still appreciate with our older kindle. With this newer kindle you still get the dedicated e-reader experience without having to give up the more intuitive nature of a touch screen. . The only other thing that we wanted to mention was the "special offers". Our older kindle did not have that and we like all the interesting literary screen savers that come up on it and will miss them on the new one. But the "special offers" occasionally have some interesting ads. Yesterday, an ad for some reading glasses with three levels of magnification came up and we found them quite interesting and reasonably priced. We will miss the old screen savers, but the "special offers" don't really seem to be a problem at all. If they become irritating to us it costs only $20 to "unsubscribe". . My wife and i both have expensive tablets with beautiful screens and fast processors. They are incredibly useful to us and have dozens of apps that do just about everything from video conferencing to playing games. These tablets also have a lot of personal account information and other valuable data stored on them. They are also quite attract to thieves. If we lost one of them it would be much more than a minor inconvenience. It is nice that as of now this latest little kindle contains nothing that isn't saved to the cloud, it has little if any personal information. If it were lost all we would have to do would be to log onto online store and deregister it from our list of devices. We would probably also change my online store password just to be safe, but my point is. It is nice to have a small dedicated electronic device that is incredibly useful, but wouldn't be devastating if something happened to it. . We like the way that the online store e-readers have continued to evolve. This "seventh generation" kindle is lighter, faster, has a touch screen, better looking fonts and has refined software. It is a pleasure to use. We weren't planning on getting another tablet like device, but this little guy is a winner. We are keeping it.

Best kindle 6 inch previous generation 7th (b00i15sb16) in review

I had a second gen kindle previously and upgraded to the touch with special offers. Offers aren't intrusive, just when i turn the kindle off. I'm willing to accept that for a lower price - plus it exposes me to new material i may be interested in. Size is perfect. I can carry it in the front pocket of my suit coat while commuting on the train or through the airport. Also, you can now use the kindle at any point in your flight and no longer have to turn it off for taxi and landing. I thought i would miss my physical buttons, but the device is small enough to operate single handedly and tapping the screen. . Only minor issue - front screen once again shows more books i may be interested in purchasing and only leaves a single row for items i've already purchased. . Edit - thanks to the helpful comment, my minor issue is resolved! . . "go to settings, then device options, then personalize your kindle, then recommendations and offers, and turn cover view recommendations "off. "

This is a great little device. I feel the need to defend it from its detractors by echoing what some other reviewers have said about it: don't blame your kindle for you not having read the product description. It doesn't have a light. You turn the page by touching the screen. You need to be connected to wifi to download a book. If you understand that, you'll enjoy it. Pros: long battery life. Good amount of storage. Awesome price. It would be kind of nice if there was a "help" option on the device itself instead of having to go to the online store website, but that's a nonissue once you get the hang of how to navigate everything-the setup tutorial it goes through when you first turn on the device is pretty thorough. . If you're not concerned about your kindle having a light or 3g access, buy this model (the complaints about no page turning buttons are ridiculous and shouldn't even be a factor).

P. Shirley, Wyoming

I bought this kindle because i love to read and my first generation kindle died. It was easy to upload my unread books, load some more and head to the beach. I don't mind the ads because they aren't too obtrusive and i tend to ignore them. I didn't see the need to pay extra to exclude ads. This kindle is compact and fits in a small purse. . I also have an ipad but it is impossible to read outside and it doesn't fit in a small purse. In the picture below, the kindle is upright so it can be seen but i can lay it down and zip the purse.

I. Cageen, Illinois says

Perfect for what i got it for. Reading outside. Hello, beach, here i come!

I got this kindle during a black friday sale at best buy last year. They had this kindle and one of the kindle fires discounted and i was torn between which one to buy. I finally went with this one because i don't really need another device on which, essentially, to watch netflix! while i am an avid reader, this was my first e-reader purchase. I'd read entire books on my laptop and smart phone before so i'm not one of those "i'll only ever read a real book because that's how it's meant to be" people. I think e-readers are great. I'd just never made it a point to buy one with all the unread books i already have lying around the house. That being said, i love my kindle now. Since november i've probably read close to twenty books. It's just so easy. Using this particular kindle also has the added benefit that it's just an e-reader. Not a tablet, i. E. A trove of distractions. I am delighted by the fact that i can just take trip with my little device and have more books than i need. It really makes me feel like i am living in the future. I find it amazing every time that it's a saturday night and i find out about something i need to read immediately, i can just get on the kindle store and buy a new book without ever having to leave my house. I also love the size. It fits in any of my handbags or coat pockets. I think it's intuitive and easy to use. I love that it's glare-free because i tend to spend a lot of time outside and i can see the text no matter how bright the sun is shining. The battery life is great. Since owning it, i've probably charged it three times. I would highly recommend the cover online store has for this model. It's really handy. I'm attaching a picture to show what a lovely addition kindle with the cover makes to an already wonderful day. I'm definitely glad i bought this over a tablet. It's perfect for me.

I am writing this from the perspective of being a long-time experienced kindle user vs. Someone brand new. From an overall perspective, considering the pricing of the kindle with special offers at $79 vs. Higher amounts for the different flavors of kindle available today, this one is a bargain. If you have wanted to get your kids a kindle to encourage reading as well as sharing of books but hesitated because $119 to $400+ is a lot of money to risk with a child, maybe at $79 this is your price point. . From a size standpoint, the reading screen is the exact same size as the other e-ink kindles. It is slightly thicker - but slightly lighter - than the kindle paperwhite, but to me it's not really a noticeable difference when you're holding it in a protective cover. . Opening up the box, included with the kindle is a micro-usb cord but no power adapter. That's really annoying. Interestingly, and it seems rather chicken of online store, a power adaptor has to be purchased separately for $15 if you purchase it at the same time as you purchase the kindle (or $20 if you purchase it later), so if you already have a micro-usb charger handy i wouldn't order one of the chargers. . There are no page buttons - no buttons at all except for the power button - and turning the page is as easy as tapping the side of the screen with your thumb while you're reading, or swiping the screen with your finger. . Reading is easy on this one: in comparison to my kindle keyboard, the previous version of kindle, and a kindle dx the letters on the screen are much, much darker and easier to read: the display is crisp and dark. Looking at the display side-by-side in the same location of an ebook against the versions of kindle mentioned above, the text on this kindle is much darker and reads a lot better. Compared to a paperwhite it is not as dark but those results are to be expected since the paperwhite has 25%+ more pixels per inch, but at this price point that's not too big of a concern for me as each new version of the kindle gets better and better with the fonts and screen display and this one is pretty darn good - you want to be able to read what you're supposed to, right? . . If you like the text-to-speech feature of previous kindle models or listened to music with your previous kindle, please be aware there are no speakers nor is there a plug for headphones. . Web surfing speed with the wireless is about the same as with other versions of the e-ink kindles: slow as christmas! my usual test of the connectivity on a kindle was hitting the main pages of the mobile websites of fox news, cnn, and google. I pushed "go" or "enter" buttons / icons at the same time on each and did not see a visible difference in the load speeds start to finish: i was about 50 yards away from my wireless router at home with a couple of walls in the way for the wireless test, with similar results at my office after the kindle arrived. I did try to check one of my google email accounts but it crashed. I learned a couple of years ago to not try and surf the internet with an e-ink kindle because it's so darn slow; besides, i use the kindle to read a book and i can surf the internet or check my email on my other devices. . In comparison the previous version of kindle this one is replacing, other than the crisper text / fonts from the improved screen display, as far as i can tell this new version of kindle has the same technical specifications of the previous kindle: about the same size, same internal memory. If you had a precious version of the kindle this version is replacing, that means you can use the same cover as the previous version. . Battery life is supposed to last ". Weeks on a single charge" but i doubt it: i charged it up 100% late yesterday afternoon and, 24 hours later, the battery meter is indicating about 50% left. This was with the wi-fi left on but the kindle not being used overnight as i left it in the office in sleep mode. Time will tell if this is going to be a problem or not. . It did take a few minutes to get this model up and running as, in addition to the normal making sure it is registered and going through a mandatory tutorial on which areas of the screen to tap to perform various functions, there is a lot of online store marketing you have to weed through: do you want to sign up for goodreads (an online store affiliate), would you like to sign up for kindle unlimited (for a monthly recurring revenue stream to online store), would you like to link your facebook and twitter accounts so your're friends / family / perfect strangers can be voyeuristic on what you are reading (absolutely not for me). . You can also sign up for parental controls with this version which i think is a great idea - sometimes you don't want your children to read what you are reading. . One annoying thing (to me, at least) is the automatic import of the various categories / collections you have linked to your online store account onto this version and links to the books in the cloud that you can immediately download in the same category on the new kindle. If you're replacing an older kindle with this one that could be handy, but if you have other people on your account / family in households with more than one kindle, that can be a pain in the neck because, for example, my wife and i generally have different tastes in books - i don't want her books cluttering up my kindle's screen and she feels the same way about mine. It's not a deal killer, but it does make you wade through a lot of stuff. . Despite some of my nits above, as a parent whose children can be hard on electronics i likethis version, and think with this $79 price point it will help to continue to explode the ebook revolution even faster as they get in more people's hands. If you have not purchased a kindle before due to price, need a cheaper replacement than the other versions, or maybe a relative or a friend has hesitated to get one this one is in your price zone, i would recommend this one!

I seriously love the case and i wish i could give it like a 4. 8 but they don't have that option. The only problem i have is that you slide the kindle through the top but there is not way to secure it in there afterwards. The top part is just exposed. Not a deal breaker though! great price and it's sturdy. The color turned out a little darker (pink) than the picture but that's okay because i like the color better! i like this case better than most of the others i've seen so i highly recommend it. :)

No, once again, there is no light! why are you not reading the description, those who are so offended by some reviews? here, i've taken a screenshot for you. No. Built. In. Light. Clear, now?

I love having moved from the buttons to this value priced touch screen with two exceptions. First, i didn't realize how much i was depending on the texture on the back of my old kindle to keep from dropping it. The cheaper plastic on this new model is super slick and dropable. I added some textured stickers on day two of ownership. . But much more important, brush the screen with the edge of your sleeve or, heaven forbid place it face down in your lap for a sec and your font size will be changed. At first i thought, "no big deal" but i have been using my new kindle for two days and i have probably fix the font 100 times. That's getting old fast, and apparently touch kindle users have been asking for a font lock for at least two years.

I finally got a kindle because i had to take a 3-week trip to rotterdam from california. I knew i would never be able to carry as many books as i would need, especially since we were going to need to carry a number of things back with us. It was a long flight with layovers both ways, and sleeping was nearly impossible in the cramped plane. . I loaded the kindle with e-books (i had a collection by one of my favorite authors, and there are lots of free books to download, and i decided to try kindle ultimate while i was at it) and packed it into my computer bag. It saved my life during the flight and the trip both. My husband thinks i should have gotten the one with its own lighting, but now that i'm home again, access to a reading light is not an issue. . The text is amazingly clear-really, my graphics geek husband marveled over it-and being able to adjust the size means that even if i've forgotten my reading glasses, i can still read. (they don't always make it from one room to the other. ) the faint gray tone to the background seems odd for a moment, but then completely natural. . Battery life has generally been very good. It helps to actually turn the screen off when not reading. I don't mind seeing the ads, but they do use up power. I left the wi-fi turned off the entire time i was in rotterdam, and i think that helps save power, too. . I got the power adapter, but since that only works in the us, i just charged the kindle by connecting it to my computer. Now that i'm home, i have the power connector next to my bed, so i can charge while reading. . I expect to be buying e-books rather than paperbacks from now on, which is just as well, as even my abundant shelving is starting to overflow. I only wish i could "rip" my existing book collection to kindle format.

My kindle is great. But when reading sometimes the book page flips 2 pages at a time when the screen get touched. Please fix this bug. Overall i'm very satisfied with my kindle and i think i'm not going to read books with my ipad anymore.

On cyber monday i bought this kindle and i'm very happy to report how pleased i am with this easy to read e-reader. That very day of delivery i read a nicholas sparks book that i purchased. Love having a book at the touch of my fingers. Easy to turn pages, just a swipe with your thumb. The kindle is so lightweight. Easy to use, easy and quick to download a book. It came charged also , which made it easy to immediately begin using. I love all the handy features that it provides. There is not a backlight, you won't need it. It has a glare-free, easy on the eyes screen. Which is great for me. Reading on a computer is very hard on my eyes because of a backlight. It can cause my eyes to become bothersome and dry. A backlight is hard on your eyes and can also keep you from sleeping peacefully. Should you purchase this e-reader i believe you will also be very happy and find what a well made device it is. What a cyber monday deal! wow!

As has been the case for years, online store sloooowwwwly adds new changes and features to the kindle. This one is no exception. If you've used a kindle in the past, you're not going to notice much of a change with this one, but since there are some minor upgrades and so forth, i'll briefly go over them:. . * screen *. . The new kindle is touchscreen and has the typical matte finish with the slightly gray/off-white paper looking background. It's certainly not bright white, but it's also not lcd looking (dark gray. ) it does not have buttons for page-turning as the older generations do. If you simply must have the page-turning buttons, please search for the older kindles that offer that. One last thing regarding the screen: this is not a kindle paperwhite or voyage where you have a back-lit screen. This has an unlit, off-white kindle screen. I will say, the text is noticeably crisper and bolder than i've seen with previous generation kindles and i believe that's because online store is using e-ink's new "carta" displays instead of the previously used "pearl" displays. I love that and have been waiting for years for e-ink, the taiwan based company that makes the kindle screens for online store, to improve them. It looks like they're finally getting it! . . The new kindle's screen resolution is 167 ppi which is slightly lower than the kindle paperwhite which is 212 ppi, and substantially lower than the kindle voyage which boasts an impressive 300 ppi (individual pixels at this density can not be distinguished by the naked eye. ) price-wise though, the base model paperwhite runs $99 at the time of this review, and the voyage base model runs $199 so you can see, the more you pay, the better the resolution and features. 167 ppi is fine though. In fact, most webpages are 72 dpi to give you a comparison. . * special offers or not *. . Like other kindles, you have the choice of purchasing one with "special offers" which is simply a marketing tactic online store uses, which, although some people may find annoying, i actually like as it recommends books that i'm actually interested in versus random crap i'd never buy. . * on-board storage and processor speed *. . One upgrade the new kindle has is the amount of on-board storage which now allows you to hold thousands of books and of course, it also comes with a slightly faster processor which online store claims is 20% faster although honestly, i don't notice the increase in speed. Pages turn quickly and that's all that really matters to me speed-wide. The on-board storage is 4gb, although you also have unlimited access to the online store cloud so there really shouldn't be any worries about storage. . * battery life *. . Even going back a few years, the kindle paper white bragged about a battery that lasted a week versus a day. For very casual reading, that was true with the paper white although with regular daily use, it was more like 4 days or so, not a week. The new kindle has a similar claim in that the battery lasts weeks, not days; that appears to be true. You can easily go two weeks with casual reading and most of that is attributed to the fact that there is no on-board light draining the battery. . * wi-fi capability (not 3g! ). . Books are downloaded quickly through wifi, usually in less than 30 seconds, and definitely under a minute, unless you have really crappy internet service. This is not 3g so you cannot download books unless you have access to wifi. I have never found this a problem as i download my books at home in advance of leaving for a trip or something. Besides, nearly every mcdonalds, starbucks, and hundreds of other retailers and restaurants now offer free wifi so if you simply must download that book while travelling, go park in a mcdonalds parking lot and download the book. It's not worth paying the extra money for the 3g access, especially when it oftentimes raises the product price by $50 or more. . * dictionary and highlighting features *. . Like all new kindles, the touchscreen has some major advantages, one being that you can click on a word you don't know and pull up the dictionary to learn what it means. Also, you have the option of turning on the "highlight" feature where you can highlight important text and see what areas of text others have highlighted the most. For someone reading a book for research purposes (writing a paper, review, etc. ), this is a nice feature as the parts of the book people find most helpful are usually highlighted, alerting you to its importance. . * online store prime benefits *. . As is the case with all kindles, subscribing to the online store prime service is going to give you a lot of bang for your buck as you can "borrow" thousands of books for free, and also get special pricing on some items. . * access to your books *. . Books are stored in the cloud and are accessible by any kindle device registered to you, as well as from your home computer which gives you plenty of options for reading. Some people use a kindle paperwhite or voyage in bed because of the backlight (as i do) and then have another kindle that they use for daytime reading. Very rarely do i use my home computer to read the books but it is a nice feature to have for some people. . * if this review has helped you in any way, please let me know. You can also post comments or ask questions in the comments section below. I try my hardest to include all the important information about the product to help you make an informed purchasing decision and feel comfortable with your purchase. Thank you for taking the time to read my review! *

If you've used a kindle before and just want the simplicity of a great base-model ereader then this is for you. No keyboard, no 3g, no fancy color screen, no backlight, ads to offset the cost (and you can pay to remove if they bother you). I don't use it for apps or games or internet browser (i've got my iphone for that). I love that you can add your own ebooks. I use "calibre" to manage the metadata.

R. Nellie, Ohio

This is my first kindle. I own a lot of gizmos, but never owned a tablet or an ebook reader of any kind simply because i never had the need. My smart phone, laptop or desktop suited my needs just fine and there was never a need for an in-between device. This has now changed as i have found myself reading more ebooks and finding my smart phone screen too small and my laptop too unwieldy and too likely for my short attention span to stray into doing something else other than reading. . The good: opening the box the kindle was smaller than i thought it was going to be, even though i knew the size - it's not a bad thing. Having used it for a while it does feel about right to me. Another thing i was surprised with was the quality of the touchscreen. I was expecting it to be frustrating to use but it was rather pleasant. Further, i thought i was going to feel annoyed at having to touch or swipe the screen instead of using the side buttons as on previous models, but i have actually found myself not minding it. . The set up was fairly straight forward and so is the general use of the kindle. Getting around is fairly intuitive for the most part and i think overall the kindle has been put together well (though for some reason i find myself tapping the centre of the screen to get the navigational menu up instead of at the top of the screen which inadvertently causes me to skip forward. I don't know why i have this inclination, but it's annoyance. Not the kindle's fault at all, merely frustrated at myself). . The bad: these are minor gripes, but i still feel i need to state them. Firstly, i'd like the power button at the top of the kindle. It seems really weird to have it at the bottom. Secondly, this isn't as annoying as the first point, but having a home button would be nice too. Having been trained by various smart phones and tablets to use the home button to get to start of something, i think this gripe would be probably shared by most even though it is far from a deal breaker. In any case, neither point is a deal breaker and i'm still really happy with the device.

I purchased the new (oct 2014) basic kindle. I just wanted a simple e-reader so that i can have all my books with me to read where ever i am. The resolution doesn't seem as crisp and bright as my previous kindle touch but it gets the job done. I notice that everything is now stored on the cloud and you have to transfer the books over to the device. I transferred all my collections over to the device but in doing so the books remained in the cloud. I had to take the added step to add the books within the collections to the device; making this kindle for me rather clunky to use. Finally, at first this new kindle felt awkward and too chunky in my hands but it fits perfectly in my old kindle touch case and now i don't mind it. . I have owned two kindle touches before this kindle. Both of them just stopped working one before the warranty ended and the second just after the warranty ended. I have never dropped my kindles nor do i abuse them, so i decided this time to buy the basic kindle on sale (thank you black friday) and when it dies then at least i will feel as if i've gotten my monies worth. . I am disappointed that this kindle doesn't have speakers and no longer offers the text-to-speech (tts) feature. I was going to return it to purchase the paperwhite but found it no longer offers the feature either. I was so happy with all the features of my kindle touch. It was such a pleasure to discover all that it did. I could understand if online store decided to make a base model that didn't have all the goodies but to redesign kindle models to take features away from us, so that we have to purchase the highest priced kindle models for the tts feature, just seems like online store is adding value to some of its customers by taking from the others.

Love it best purchase will never leave home without

I am very happy with this purchase other than the fact it didn't come with a wall charger. I am using my nokia 520 phone wall charger with this kindle 6". As you can see this kindle uses a micro connecter, which most cell phones use. The screen is a light gray and the text is clear. It doesn't have any back lighting, speakers or headphone jack. This kindle has a touch screen. You will have to go through the "difficult" task of swiping your finger across the screen to turn pages. If you have shakiness or tremors this in not the kindle for you as it would cause you a lot of frustration. If you are new to the kindle world be aware that there is a learning curve. The users guide answers most questions. If you are stuck and can't figure out what to do call the kindle customer service. There is no phone number only this online site address. They are great to work with. . . If you have books on your computer, unless they are epub files the kindle should be able to handle most files. Nook uses epub (files) and kindle uses mobi (files) i easily transfered most of my books from my computer to the kindle smoothly with out a hitch. Fyi you can not transfer entire folders only the files in side of them. I would definitely recommend the kindle 6".

Top kindle ereader glarefree touchscreen Review

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

F. Valdez, Bretagne says

I ordered this for my 90-year old father who has had 2 kindles other to date. This was to replace his previous version, which after a year experienced some sensitivity and irregularity in page keys. This touchscreen version did not work out at all for him; he would accidentally hit the screen, end up pulling up a menu/task bar and lost in how to find his way back to his book. The instructions are too cryptic and assume an advanced user- therefore no help for him (or me. ). He just wants a simple way to read a book via kindle- i gave him the one i bought 4 years ago and it still does the trick. Forget all the bells and whistles.

E. Hayward, Vermont

I had the awesome keyboard kindle that had 3g wireless and suddenly it froze and stopped working. So i went to replace it and this is what came up as the replacement. I'm not a real touch screen person because if you handle this kindle anywhere except on the edges. The thing advances or backs up! i also didn't see the small print that said this replacement or "upgrade" kindle was wi-fi only which is a pain when traveling and the wi-fi needs to log in even in "free" wi-fi zones. Without the 3g (which is 3 times as expensive as my original keyboard kindle and this wi-fi only reader), i have to really plan ahead when purchasing my books and cant just order up the next book any time anywhere. This kindle has the ability to read the screen in the sun, but i don't think this is close to being an improvement on the keyboard kindle that i adored.

Y. Audrey, Knowsley says

I had an old original-type kindle with the keyboard at the bottom, and the screen messed up. This new one is more like an ipad - touch screen, cloud storage, etc. I asked and asked about getting the categories, books, games, etc transferred to the new kindle - no help there. I was told everything will be available - no it's not. I don't care for it, the actual reading screen is a little smaller, all my books are in the 'cloud, ' my categories are gone, and none of my games transferred. I have been unable to get any real help from the customer service people. They only speak broken english and don't understand what i am asking about and put down in their notes a problem that is what not what i said at all. The games i had were scrabble, kindle word games, and solitaire games. I've tried to purchase new games, but i've been unable to get them for the new kindle. Everything is for the older one. I can't even find where i had customer service add the new device and mark the old one as gone, deleted, etc. . If you've never had a kindle, this would be fine. If you like an older kindle, it is not the same. I have an ipad and wonder if i would be better off getting the kindle app for it.

O. Meyer, Yukon Territory

I purchased this kindle for my father after he broke his kindle keyboard. He used his kindle now and then and after talking with him we decided on this version instead of one more expensive. Very quickly we discovered something rather upsetting which took nearly an hour of online digging to confirm: it has no speakers. My dad started collecting audio books and would listen to them at night. No where on the product page does it state there are no speakers. Had i known this before i would have gone with a paperwhite, which i myself own. Both of us have struggled with this kindle's touchscreen. I use touchscreens all day long, including a paperwhite, with no problems. There are delays between tapping and the reaction at times which prompts you to double tap. Besides these two things the kindle works as advertised. I would like to see online store drop the current shape and material for the slimmer, more rounded design they used before. While i wouldn't count that as a negative it is not a positive either.

W. Debra, Worcestershire says

I was really looking forward to the touch screen, but it's ended up being really annoying. I like to read holding the kindle one handed, but even holding it with both hands, or even holding it in one hand and using the index finger of the other hand (the most careful way to tap the touch screen) when i tap the right side to advance a page, it often jumps forward several pages. And it is incredibly annoying to have to page back to the page i was trying to get to in the first place. Jerks me right out of the book. It's annoying enough that i wish i'd kept my old, non touch screen kindle. It seems to be confined to page turning, so when i need to use the on screen keyboard it works great. And that's the reason i upgraded. Still, having a hard to use keyboard is *much* preferable to this "jump ahead several pages" thing. Oh well, live and learn.

K. Kathlene, Kingston upon Thames

It's so frustrating having an entire library at my fingertips, yet have it be worse than useless as a tool of study. My kindle just lost all my notes on 60 pages of the book i'm reading. Highlights, notes, bookmarks. All gone. It might be fine for kicking back to read some leisure fiction or whatever, but between the data loss and the extreme lock in, this is a lousy learning tool.

Q. Rochelle, Georgia says

The more "gadgets" they keep adding, the less convenient the device becomes as a reading device. . - touch screen: why? the big buttons we had on the side worked great. Now, i can't remove a flick of dirt from my screen without turning pages, i can't turn pages with gloves (or my elbow for that matter), i have to touch the screen all the time leaving smudges that i can't clean without turning more pages! :(. . - kindle store: in the older versions the kindle store pages for books were "standardized" to fit in a single screen, where you could see all important info. Now "the processor is faster" so they make you scroll to see the rest of the info. The "customer review score" requires a scroll, the "product details" (number of pages for example) requires a lot of scrolls, and some things i just can't find at all! :(. . - (edit: there was a rant here about the book list being "cover picture" form. I was shown that you can actually change the list back to the original text form from the menu so i removed the rant). . I hate this device. The only reason i replaced my old one is it broke down. But this isn't a good replacement. It doesn't let me "just read". Instead it distracts me with "bells and whistles". . The touch screen is the most annoying "feature" as it actually interferes with the reading: you keep touching (so smudging) the screen, and you can't clean it without stopping so you try and keep reading with all the smudges. And you can't really read while eating anymore as your hands are dirty and you don't want to touch the screen. . But you can't get a kindle without a touchscreen now :(. . Whose idea was it to use a touchscreen for a book? ! and whose idea was it to force people to use touchscreen? !

L. Irene, Sunderland

It has a scratch on the screen. The thing is usable, but just not the one you would be happy with.

N. Judith, Rhode Island says

Was very excited to finally have an e-reader and not have to have my laptop to read books. This was very nice and in great condition but the point of an e-reader. Is to read the book! the screen is not back lit. Yes, i knew that but i also assumed that i would be able to read a book on it. The screen brightness is nothing even close to the listing picture. I can't believe the customers photos. I wish mine was even a little close to how bright & easy to read their photos show. The screen is so dim that i have to have the e-reader in sunlight and the font set extremely large to make out the words. No, i don't need glasses. My son had the same 7th gen kindle reader and his screen was very readable. Also, there are some glitches. The screen jumps back and forth every so often, and the entire things kinda just tweaks out when you are going through it looking for books. The good, condition of kindle itself was great and very easy to drag and drop books from my desktop into kindle folder when usb plugged in. Other then that. Now i basically have a paperweight. Not happy and would not buy again.

G. Colleen, East Riding of Yorkshire

Not happy. The old 5-button kidle was better. The screen is too sensitive at times and not sensitive enough at other times. When you shut off and return the book you're reading isn't moved to the top of the list. You have t remember the title to reopen the book. I had to try five times to remove a book from the device. In general i don't like the new kindle.

. Mays, Wyoming says

Don't buy this kindle! . Do you have a lot of time to re-boot this device over and over again - if you put the book (kindle) down for a few minutes? . Do you want to increase/decrease screen brightness? sorry, it doesn't do it. Only read in well lit spaces. Would you like to change the go-to-sleep time? if you go attend food on the stove while reading - you've got maybe 2 or 3 minutes - until you have to re-boot this kindle. . Here's the big problem with this (must be 1st version kindle); none or the device performance features that you would expect with a typical 'smartphone' are available. . First major inconvenience - situation:. Say you've got to put the book (this kindle) down for a few minutes to check my clothes dryer. Food in the oven, etc, when you get back, the kindle has 'timed out' - and it must be restarted. (booted up again). There is no kindle setting for this idle time to reboot period. . Because of a little 'idle time' the kindle must be re-booted -is time consuming: this consists of holding down the power button and waiting for 10 to 12 seconds - and then waiting for the 'boot' screen'. From there you get a boot time odometer then runs for about 15 to 30 seconds. Conclusion; so, just this complete reboot - until you can read again - is for 2 to 3 minutes. . Screen brightness:- there are no controls what-so-ever, you can choose is text style and size, that it. End. No brightness, paper color, nothing. You cannot read this in a darkened room, a paperback although heavier - is still a little more convenient (easy to see) that this kindle. . This kindle has good 'synchronization' with an online store account, wi-fi connection settings, and other social media liking features. But compared to even a cheap cell phone - nothing, zero. . I would not purchase have purchased this kindle knowing these deficiencies - i would have spent an additional $40 just for the basic features (like available on all current cell-phones) in order to prevent having to spend time, time, and time again - re-booting this kindle between small breaks. I can read fine with it. It loads my e-books perfectly. I can link to my online store account(s). It's just that most settings you would expect for such a device are just missing? common device settings! as a reading device, it's great, as a replacement for a paperback book - it sucks. . Regards, . D. Dogoood

Everything is good except that the screen display of scanned pdf file is even worse than the previous version. My old kindle displays the pdf files perfect, while the letters on the new one are thinner and some are dropped

C. Edith, New York

I had the kindle a generation before this one which i loved, but it broke one day after a friend sat on it. I thought that the new generation could only be better, but i was wrong. The last generation was thinner and lighter. Though this generation is still pretty light, its heavy enough for me to feel that itd slip when only holding it with one hand. (granted i have small hands. ) also, the black framing looks thicker and the screen looks smaller. I feel that the touchscreen is unnecessary for a simple ereader, especially if you use it mainly for reading and not for taking notes, which is what i do. I loved the buttons on the side used to change pages in the previous version, but they have been changed to swiping. The layout of the home page, etc is more cluttered now if i'm remembering my old kindle correctly. It might be weird that i'm complaining about it having more functions, but i feel that a kindle ereader should stay simple and do its job: be as portable as possible, be efficient to use, and show me my books. Anything else is superfluous and you might as well buy a tablet.

After making this upgrade all my notes and highlights in my most frequented book have been lost. My techie son spent a long time researching this online & trying to beat the problem, but to no avail. What's up with this vaunted whispernet? when are they going to learn what a young bill gates figures out long ago-that customers care much more about their data than they do about some factory's next new widget! disappointed. . After submitting this mostly negative review, i was contacted by online store asking me to contact their customer support number. After a long discussion with a very helpful agent, they confirmed that when books are updated on their system, personal notes and highlights are lost. They gave me a website where i can go to see them once i'm logged in ( but they will never again show up on my kindle device. Strangely, my old notes & highlights show up on the kindle app on my iphone. New notes and highlights show up on my kindle. But i cannot see all of my notes & highlights on either my kindle device nor on my iphone. . I asked the online store agent if they never thought of allowing customers to elect to upgrade to newer versions of books they own with the declared risk that they may lose their own valuable data. The agent said they will put that into their system for consideration. . So, i reiterate what i said before. Personal data is more important that hardware. If online store wants us to stick with their hardware platform, they better find a way to protect my data. In the meantime, keep your notes & highlights on paper!

As a basic e-reader the latest kindle does a great job. I have no complaints for what it was meant to do but there is one thing that bothers me and that is the battery life. After only about a week of using it, it seems half my battery is drained after reading through 300 pages. . Naturally i was thinking that maybe i've gotten a faulty battery. There was no manual or technical details in the online store description to see the battery capacity. I then saw some very small wording on the back of the kindle itself to see "input 5. 25v max 500ma". It hit me, i've been using too high of a current to charge my battery and as a result have deteriorated the battery health. The charger that online store suggests to use has a 1a output, or 1000ma. . In my opinion, online store is pulling some form of planned obsolescence. Not only is 1a the most common output for a usb charger, but it's next to impossible to find one with a "slower" charge. I'm going to end up charging my kindle from my computer whenever i'm already on it from now on in efforts to keep the longevity of the battery. (computer usb 2. 0 ports output a maximum of 500ma)

Got this as a replacement for my keyboard kindle, which died of old age. . The pros:. Small and light enough to fit in my purse. Print is clear and easy to read, and customizable so you can pick the font face and size that are easiest on your eyes. . The cons:. 1: not really in love with the touch screen. It seems really sensitive. I've blown on it before (to remove a crumb) and the page changes. The kindle tends to get turned on in my purse, and when i take it out to go to lunch, it is on a completely different book and the font size is either huge or tiny as it gets touched by things in my purse. . 2: another "meh" to me is that the screen can apparently be "bruised" if something touches it too hard. There's a small smudge on the screen that is not removable. It's not really in the way, but it's in the perfect location to make me occasionally look at a word twice. . 3: and finally, i am so not in love with the interface. Making a collection is time consuming and confusing. And some of my books, for whatever arcane reason, show up in the book list multiple times. I cannot make it stop. I don't know if this is specific to this hardware of if it's a universal problem. But it's really annoying when trying to organize. . Overall not bad. I like that it's not backlit, since i work on a computer all the time and can get eyestrain. Wish i had my old keyboard though. If you get one, get a case though. And be ready to rebuild your collections. (i wish online store would create an interface on their website where you can create your collections that would transfer to a new device when an old one dies. Creating collections on a touch screen is a pain in the tail! )

This really was everything i wanted in a reader. All i wanted was a way to take multiple books with me when i travel, without the glare of an ipad screen or the short battery life of the ipad. It was great for a year, and now it randomly locks the screen and i have to swipe to unlock, which of course, 50% of the time it's non-responsive. I literally just read before bed - i'm not moving or anything, and the screen locks. I'm so frustrated. I've always kept it in a protective case, i've never dropped it or exposed it to moisture, heat, or children. What. The. Heck. . Pretty ridiculous for paying so much only to get a year of functionality.

- pros -. . 1. Since the kindle paperwhite is only a fraction of an inch smaller than this kindle, then this product can fit into a paperwhite case as long as it's not a snap-in case (which is really handy because it's almost impossible to find cases for this one. See con 1). It's a bit snug and the auto on/off won't work because the paperwhite mechanism is different, but at least it fits. Online store itself has made cases that fit this kindle, but as far as i know there's only about 6. . 2. Pretty much everything advertised. . 3. I can go on my library website and borrow kindle books for free. Works so easily and i've used it several times. Just get a library card from your local or main branch and find your library on overdrive. Com (at least, that's the site my library is on. Just ask a librarian if yours is different). . - cons -. . 1. Like i mentioned before, it's almost impossible to find a case specifically for this kindle. Why? because it's only called "kindle. " and all the other kindle models - whether it be fire, paper white, voyage, touch, or another - are also called "kindle. " all these models (especially fire, which is also in its 7th generation) are significantly more popular than this very good though rather badly titled model. Therefore, it is impossible to find the very few accessories for this kindle while they drown helplessly amid the several hundred results for the kindle anything-else-but-this-one. ; ) like i mentioned; it's a very good product. It's just fallen victim of a rather obvious but still painfully detrimental marketing misstep. . 2. It glitches every once in a while if i try to push too many buttons, and then i loose info like how many ages i read in freetime that day, but that's pretty rare. . 3. The battery only lasts weeks if you keep it on airplane mode, which is usually fine because it really only uses internet when you're shopping. . *6 month update*. . Con 2 is becoming a bit more prevalent. What does the glitch look like? well, the kindle stops responding without for a few seconds. I usually notice when i go to turn a page and nothing happens. A moment later the screen spasms in a display of black-and-white rectangles before going white. Another moment, and i see the "loading up" screen, which is a picture of a boy sitting under a tree with a progress bar in the foreground. After about 10-20 seconds, everything is normal except for the fact that it's forgotten my page number and has returned me to the spot i left off the day before. . My kindle glitches several times a week (i use it every day) and it almost invariably looses my place in whatever book i'm reading. It's not that big of a deal to find my place again, but it is a bit disappointing.

I have been very disappointed with my new kindle 6" glare-free e reader. I loved my old one and sorry it died. There are many times when it doesn't take actions as needed. I. E. , page turning, scrolling up or down. It will simply do nothing or, to my frustration, if your finger is near the page it will jump and sometimes it takes several minutes to find where you were. It seems to me that in this case, progress has taken a big step backwards in this new edition. I'm not very happy and would not recommend it. You need to improve this reader or remove it. . Bobbie

I returned this item because of a single major flaw: pdf rendering. It's great for everything else. . I use lots of pdf books, and a lot of them are scanned books, with pages in the jbig2 compression algorithm. This is the best b&w image compression routine ever invented. You can have a 300dpi book, 6x9" pages, 400 pages, all in maybe a 7mb file size. It's awesome. . But kindle can't properly render jbig2 compressed pdfs. It's like someone went through the book and randomly erased characters. Like to the tune of half a dozen characters from every page, just gone. "for e ample, im gine h w hard it wo ld be to re d somethi g with lots of mi sing chara ters! ". . I've used these same pdfs with dozens of other devices and software packages, and they always show perfectly. Except on kindle. Seems to be a universal problem with kindle pdf rendering engine, because i've seen the same thing in multiple kindle e-ink devices and even on a friend's kindle fire. . I know this is a very specialized problem, and probably won't affect a lot of people at all. But if you need good pdf support. Probably ought to look elsewhere.

This is my 6th kindle. I liked all of the previous models better that this one. The touch screen drives me crazy (it is way too sensitive), as the slightest hint of contact makes something, mostly unwanted, happen. Either it goes back a page, forward a page, changes font size or goes to a menu or function that i don't want . I've been forced to return my previous kindle to service even though it has reached a stage where it locks up occasionally and the screen is losing it's crispness (both reasons that i replaced it with this one). Not sure what i'm going to do about this. I am an avid read, and travel a lot and have come to be completely hooked on this type of vehicle for my library. The e-reader is the answer to easy reading, but i sure like the older (non touch-screen) models better. It's not that i don't use touch screen technology-i have smart phones and tablets, etc, that i use daily without problems, but i like to and need to be able to treat my e-reader like a book, and this one won't let me do that.

This is a whole library that i can hold in one hand! i love to read but have limited space in my house, so it is really convenient to have this ereader where i can access a world of books. It has my bible, dictionary and other reference materials and i can access almost every book ever published. I also find that many books are not issued in print anymore and i have them in my kindle collection. . Things you should know about battery life. I love that i can read for weeks with a single charge, but you have to be careful and use a kindle knowledgeably because there are a few basic rules you must follow to prevent damage to the battery. Just call online store kindle help before your first use and they will be able to help you get set up safely. You shouldn't over charge and you shouldn't try to use the kindle while it is charging. And you should never let it run completely down. These things could damage the battery. You should also know that a wifi internet connection drains the battery very fast. Only connect to the internet while downloading a book, and when done, disconnect from the internet for low energy reading. You cannot replace the battery on a kindle so when you've used up all your charges, you must discard this device and buy a new kindle. I think if they wanted to, they could make these to last, but there is no profit in that, so remember that kindles are disposable and your best course of action is to be aware of how to take care of your battery and give it maximum life. . Another drawback is that kindles are tiny. They are not a good choice for cookbooks or for color magazines or for an atlas that needs a large page size to appreciate. And kindles are black & white only. If you want a large screen and color display, you will have to move up to a tablet, but be aware that kindle reading is extremely hard on the battery life of a tablet. . One of my favorite features is that this particular kindle is the cheapest because it has no backlight. This is considered a negative by some people, but i find that hours of staring into a backlit screen causes eyestrain. This inexpensive kindle is the easiest for me to read and i wish people could realize what constant backlit screen time does to one's eyes. . I dont' think kindle will ever completely replace print books. I still have a small collection of my favorites in high quality hardbound editions. But for general reading, this is an awesome compliment to my print collection.

I am giving this a two-star only because when it worked it did all right. This is the second kindle i got. The first one was a gift of some sort and a 5th generation kindle. My dad purchased it at full price earlier and had no use for it. I took it about a year after unused and unwrapped. About five months later of pure joy with my kindle, i got a completely black screen. This led me to purchase a new one as the warranty was up. . As usual, i cherish the kindle for its long battery life i could utilize the kindle for a few days, for a few hours a day without a charge. I also enjoy the touch screen on this device in comparison to the old one i had. So i didn't quite mind paying extra for the device. Not to mention an additional 100 usd to ship it to my exact location at the time. . Unfortunately, after four months of use i noticed that the text in the screen began to get blurry. This gives off an impression of being an assembling deformity that results in the pixels in the screen "passing on. " the outcome was that part of the screen was white (looks somewhat like changeless lines on the screen). The rest of the pixels keep on functioning regularly. After a few more weeks, the kindle completely "kicked the bucket". As of today the screen is so blurry and defected that the device wouldn't come on anymore. I was very disappointed and now i have two kindle devices that had arrived at a cost of $249 that are completely un-useable after a cumulative use of a single year. I would be reading books of my computer from now on thanks to online store. . This is issue needs to be rectified!

Is my device faulty or it is normal for kindle to hang and get a messed up screen until you restart? . (see the attached photo).

I bought this to hopefully replace my 3-year-old kindle keyboard 3g. However, i had to send this new kindle touch back. Compared with my old kindle, this new version has much more visible pixilation in the text, something i simply cannot tolerate after not having to deal with junky text on my old kindle. The back of the new kindle is also poorly designed, as it has a ridge along that juts awkwardly into ones hand, unlike the smooth-backed kindles of old. I guess i will have to hope my old kindle has some more life left in it or that the kindle voyage turns out to be as worth the price. Having tried a kindle paperwhite and not been impressed with the fonts or backlight, the kindle voyage had really better be fantastic, otherwise i will definitely regret tying myself to online store with so many kindle book purchases in recent years.
