Review for kindle voyage ereader highresolution

Price was $199.99. The kindle voyage is significantly smaller, thiner, and lighter than kindle paperwhite. It's very comfortable when holding in hand. The page turn buttons make it much easier to turn pages and the vibration feedback feels terrific. Texts are more sharper than ever - its ppi is even higher than ipad. This is by far the most exquisite e-ink reader on the planet.

Prologue

I think this is the first time i've owned a piece of technology and felt unsure that it could be improved upon. It's that good. . That's probably oversimplifying it-there are flaws here and there-but what i mean is that the experience of reading a page out of a book is about as good as it can be. . My only other kindle was the 1st generation kindle touch. I liked it well enough but i definitely kept my eye on the new ones coming out. The first thing i had to have was physical page buttons. A touchscreen is great for highlighting but i hate it for page turns. Next, i hated the slowness. And finally i was ready to try the lit screen even though i didn't think i'd use it often. . The pagepress buttons are simply perfect. By including the haptic feedback, online store has executed this idea to perfection on the first try. On the one hand i think it would be useful to feel where the buttons are when you're reading in the dark and can't see them. On the other hand, i never have a problem hitting them. You just know where they are after a while. Having them on both sides is incredibly useful. I use the buttons exclusively and never turn the page on the screen anymore (which you can still do). . Regarding slowness, i never notice it with this model. The browser is a little slow but i'm not expecting miracles there. . And, the light. It's too bad that everyone is seemingly having different experiences with this. My voyage has no splotches and no off-colors. It's actually better than i expected it to be. I thought i'd always be turning it off when i had ambient light, but it improves the readability so much in all lighting conditions that i've never considered turning it off. In fact, the light sensor/time adjustment features work so well that i can't remember the last time i've even adjusted the brightness. Perfect, no room for improvement. . Sometime in september i got a software update that adds a new font and a new rendering engine. The page layout is much better now, so if this was a downside of the kindle line for you before, you should give it a second look. . My biggest con is the browser. I'm not expecting this to be a wonderful experience for facebook or browser games or anything like that, but there are situations where you might want to read long sections of text on your kindle rather than an lcd device. As a web developer, the kindle browser is nearly impossible to work with. But, i didn't buy the device for this and i'm not too worried about it. For what it's meant to do, the kindle voyage is nearly perfect. Chris gives it five stars. Kindle voyage e-reader, 6 high-resolution display 300 ppi with adaptive built-in light, pagepress sensors, wi-fi - includes special offers Review (53 002680)

I use my voyage all the time and love most of its features, but i do have a couple of suggestions for future models. - i borrow ebooks from my public library and would love having overdrive integrated to the voyage (as goodreads is) to make selecting and downloading library books easier. I would also like to be able to see the status of my library books directly on my voyage. - could the manage content function also be integrated to the ereader itself? . . This would make life easier, as i would not have to run to my computer to do these tasks. . Update: since using my ipad app s latest version, and my husband s fire, i am finding that my reading experience greatjy enhanced on these devices. I wish dedicated e-readers had the the follwing functions:. Ability to change background; white, sepia, black. Page animation. Full color. Text to speech and audible. Full access to kindle store. I do like the no glare glass on the regular kindle line. My next ereader will be a fire, but it will be used as an ereader, since i already have both a tablet and laptop for computing and media needs. I hope you will consider integrating the technology in your kindle apps into your line of ereaders! -T. Morgan

PROS
  • This is my third kindle. The first was the one with the keyboard. It got me hooked on reading the ebook way. It was just a little awkward to hold, being just wider than i could comfortable hold in a single hand. I replaced that with the basic, ad-supported model that had buttons. That was way more comfortable and had better contrast, but i couldn't read it in the dark (and the wife keeps telling me to turn off the light when she wants to sleep! ). I thought about getting the paperwhite but i really, really like the buttons for page pushing and didn't see myself tapping the screen for page-flipping. So i waited until the voyage came out with the best of all possible worlds - high-contrast, self-lit screen with buttons! . . And you know what? i don't really use the buttons. I'm a screen tapper after all. I suppose that could mean that i would have been just as happy with the paperwhite, but man, this screen on this looks so good! between the resolution, the contrast, the auto-adjusting light levels and the snappy screen refreshes, the voyage has spoiled me for anything less. . Do i miss that this isn't a color lcd tablet? heck, no! those are heavy, hard on the eyes, require constant (ok, daily) recharging and are full of distractions to keep you from reading. Give me a dedicated ebook reader every time!
  • I had the first generation of the paperwhite for the past year and was very happy with it. This is not revolutionary in the sense that it changes the experience, but it does perfect what was already great with the paperwhite. . I'm very satisfied and glad i purchased the voyage for these reasons. . 1. The screen is crisp, looks beautiful and there is more contrast between the background and the text. The paperwhite is good, but this is super great! . . 2. It's fast. I know it doesn't matter much with books, but opening books, changing pages has no delay, highlighting is easier without delay, etc. . 3. Light is so wonderful. I leave it on auto and it does a great job of being right brightness. I love the auto dim feature that slowly gets less bright as your eyes adjust in dark room. . I was able to give my wife my paperwhite and now she's converted from paper to kindle reading. Which has resulted in her reading more often. I guess i mention that because it helps justify my upgrade. Bottom line is this is a great product and reading is so much better for you than candy crush that i love having a dedicated e-reader.
CONS
  • I thought this latest kindle would eliminate the irritations of the previous ones. Btw, i own all of them. The voyager periodically skips to the list of chapters or a different page in the middle of the narrative as does previous kindles; with the other editions it was frequently impossible to find my page because swiping down the list of chapters was impossible. As soon as i wanted to scroll down, swiping automatically opened a chapter on the visible page without letting me go to different pages. It is true that it is now easier to find chapters with the control button but, sadly, i rarely use it. Pressing the forward button frequently doesn't work when the kindle in resting on something such as a counter, the flat book space on my treadmill. I have the pressure settings on low to facilitate the kindle's page turning controls. There is virtually no difference between low and high. I have to press these controls quite hard and this requires my holding the kindle with 2 hands. Pressing a control/button to turn the page was the main reason i bought this kindle. The voyager is easier on the eyes because of the higher ppi. I do read a lot and the battery on the earlier kindles usually lasted about 7-8 days. I have to charge the voyager every 2-3 days. And, yes, airplane mode is always on. I didn't get the 3g feature, which i have on a few of my other kindles, to save a bit of money. I wish i had. I also don't like the. Special offers. I shall probably fork over the extra bux to get rid of them. Bottom line. I don't recommend buying this "new" and "updated" kindle . It's not worth the high price. . Update: i have now used this new kindle for 3 months. The forward and back button press is now easier to use (i assume the last update fixed this) this is the best reason to get the voyage . I don't use the automatic built-in light because it doesn't really help me (people are different so this may work for others). The battery lasts as long as the battery on the previous paperwhite (at least i haven't seen any difference). The 300 ppi is ok. Bottom line, i like it (what's not to like) but the mammoth price increase is really too much for what you get. I'd wait for the price to go down.
  • This is my first experience with kindle ownership. In the past i have owned a sony prs-500, a kobo ereader, a kobo touch, multiple nook simple touches, multiple nook simple touches with glowlight, and a nook glowlight. My point is this; i have had years of experience with e-book readers. I am shocked at the quality control issues online store is having with the voyage. . I have purchased nine kindle voyages. Every single one has had a bad screen. They have all had a yellow tint near the top. Some have had pixels that are stuck in the uncharged/off state. Some have had glittering points on the screen. . I purchased five of the units from best buy and returned each one. I purchased four through online store, and am finally keeping my last one, even though it still has screen issues. Why i am keeping it? any time i get a new e-reader i gift out my old one. So, i have nothing to go back to. . Now that i have that out of the way i can say this: the voyage is a great e-book reader. It has some great features like page press buttons (nook simple touch had these four years ago), front-lit screen, (nook had this first too), goodreads integration, landscape mode, and x-ray to name a few. However, that doesn't excuse a poor screen on every single voyage i have had. This isn't an isolated issue in any way. It beggars belief that by chance i received nine out of nine with bad screens.
  • Before i give my cons, the device was speedier and ux is always improving. I was impressed with the snappiness relative to the older models. . I was excited for this and thought they finally addressed the form factor for folks like me who want to hold the device across the back (i. E. With thumb on one side and fingers gripping around behind to the other side. Using the side of my thumb to page forward and my pointer finger to page backward - this is a comfortable and secure way to hold. ) i don't like the hold method of pinching between the thumb-pad and palm (using my thumb to press buttons) - it feels insecure to me especially when lying down. . Well, holding across the back on this device doesn't really work. I sort of got it to work by squeezing my grip hard (causing enough pressure with the side of my thumb to hit the side sensor) but that was not comfortable at all. . So i gave another shot at gripping with my thumb pad and palm. But this device is worse at this (imo) than the old paperwhites without the side buttons/sensors because you can't use your thumb to stabilize the device w/o touching the page change sensor. I tried resting my thumb on the sensor, thinking maybe it will not change the page until i put more pressure on the sensor (and i did adjust the pressure in the settings) but this just confused the device and sometimes the page changed and sometimes it didn't. Worse, when do this, back-paging by sliding up (to hit the page back sensor) just didn't work; it usually went forward a page. . The other thing that kills it for me is that they still don't let you turn off the backlight (i know that online store markets this as "front" light but from the perspective of your eyeballs it's light emitted from the device just like a backlight. ) i like reading by time tested low wattage incandescent light, not the indigo-greenish-grey luminescence (you see in the dark) that the device does. I like the option of backlighting, and in a pinch i'd use the device backlighting, but i use the device mostly in my bed at night before sleeping where i can setup the optimum reading light. Of course i tried the dimmest backlight setting but since i m already using the dimmest ambient light i can get away with (to better induce sleepiness) the device light stands out. Raising the ambient light is not a solution if the point is to induce sleep. I realize that there are holy wars about this from the paperwhite era but i have no idea why online store didn t solve the issue in the voyager era by just allowing the backlight to be turned off. . So i returned it. For now i m back to my old cheap kindle with side buttons and no keyboard (if they'd just make a screen touch version of this one. ) sucks too because i really want a touch screen for definition lookups, endnote links and typing scenarios. But i believe that side buttons or rocker-bars still work better for page changes. But i'm not married to buttons - i'm hopeful some new shake or roll gesture, or maybe an inset touchpad on the upper back (i could rest my pointer finger on and flick up/down or right/left) or something(? ) could address this. . All the best, . Dave mcpherson

kindle voyage ereader highresolution Kindle Voyage E-reader, 6" High-Resolution Display (300 ppi) with Adaptive Built-in Light, PagePress Sensors, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

The kindle voyage is easily online store's most premium kindle yet, but it's not without issues. . Pros:. . 1. ) feels absolutely great in the hand. 2. ) glass display still looks like paper - no mean feat! . 3. ) battery life is excellent. 4. ) the new magnetic online store cover you can buy for the voyage is quirky genius. 5. ) new high-res display is fantastic. . Cons:. . 1. ) expensive! . 2. ) the uniformity of the screen is still an issue. - this is a big one. Part of the reason i still tend to gravitate to my aging kindle touch is because there's no front-lighting system built in. That means that screen uniformity is excellent. Every paperwhite and kindle voyage i've used unfortunately suffers from an uneven front-lighting system. What this means is that parts of the screen tinge green or pink with the front lighting system on. This isn't generally noticeable outside or under strong ambient lighting. However, in bed or in the dark when reading - this color non-uniformity is frustrating to my eyes, and it's the biggest reason why the voyage doesn't come close to being a 5-star product. Having used several voyage devices, it definitely varies from voyage to voyage, but i've yet to see one with a perfectly uniform display. . I hope the next iteration of voyage can improve on this issue, because until then, - yes it's the best reading device out there, but i wish it were better! . . 3. 75 out of 5. Recommended, with caveats.

Click to see NoticeKindle Voyage 6 Inch 4gb Ereader (53 002680)"I upgraded to this when my trusty second generation kindle went mia. Even though i already have a tablet, i still prefer reading on an e-ink display. I find it easier on the eyes, and i love not having to worry about the battery. I can go weeks without plugging into a charger. . If you haven't used an e-ink based kindle before and are wondering if you want one over a tablet, i would recommend it if you are more than a very casual reader. If you want to save money, the paperwhite looks like a perfectly capable e-reader, although i haven't used one. For either, you can't really beat the online store experience for e-readers. . For those of you looking to upgrade from a previous generation kindle, here are the things i like coming from my 2nd generation kindle:. - size: the screen is the same size as my old kindle, but the overall size is smaller, so i can now shove it in my coat pocket. - the touchscreen is a great addition, and makes the overall experience much nicer. - the backlighting is a nice touch. I never really missed a backlight on my old one, but the added flexibility with the backlight is appreciated. It can even help readability when it isn't too dark to read but more light is helpful. - legibility is improved. It wasn't bad with the 2nd generation, but i notice an improvement. . The things i don't like are minor. The dedicated "buttons" for going forward and back aren't as good as i would like, and the buttons are one of the reasons i went with the voyage over the paperwhite. They work, but i find myself just using the main touchscreen sometimes because it is easier. I would prefer something a little nicer. I also miss the headphone jack. Since i have my cell phone with me all the time it isn't a huge deal, but i do miss it. . For me the big question was voyage or paperwhite. I ended up going with the voyage because i figured it would last me for years and the price difference wasn't much. After using it for a few months i am quite happy with the voyage. If you are dedicated user of an ereader the voyage won't let you down."

Kindle Paperwhite E-reader - Black, 6 High-Resolution Display 300 ppi Built-in Light, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers

I've only had this thing for about 5 days, however i am absolutely in love with it. I've never been one to read much on my iphone or ipad, i just didn't like the way it felt and looked. I work in a school district so i have the summers off and i have been doing a lot of reading this summer so i asked for a kindle for my birthday hoping that i would be able to get the same satisfaction out of the e-reader as a book. I wanted it to feel like i was reading a book rather than looking at a screen. I didn't want it to be too heavy that it made my hand tired to hold it, and i wanted to be able to lay on my side in bed and read it, which was always annoying with a regular book because there was no good way to hold it without my hand getting tired. It fits all my criteria. When the brightness is off, it is as if i am looking at a piece of paper straight out of a book. However, when i am reading in bed in the dark, i can easily turn the brightness up and don't have to worry about getting a book light or having a lamp on. It is very light weight, i haven't made my hand tired yet holding the kindle and i've read about 6 books in the last 5 days, so basically my eyes have been glued to it. It's easy to connect to wifi and just as easy to download books. It is small enough to fit in my purse but is big enough to feel like i'm not reading on a tiny screen. I seriously can't think of anything i don't like about it.

Kindle Paperwhite 6 Inch 4gb Ereader (b00oqvzdjm) FAQ.

I fought myself over the idea of buying this because i did not like the idea of all my books being digital. I love the feeling of a book in my hands and looking at my library shelves filled with hardback books. What i found though is with the kindle it is much easier on my eyes to read this and it is so convenient when i am traveling for work that i can just take this with me on the road and i instantly have access to more books than ill ever need on that trip. I still purchase hardbacks of books that i find truly amazing after reading them on the kindle so that i can support the author and keep building my physical library but thanks to this kindle i have been able to read far more books and much cheaper than ever before. You will find that thanks to it being easier to read you will read far more and with less strain. I highly recommend getting the leather case as it will feel similar to a leather bound book in your hands and it will not feel as foreign to you. If you have been fighting buying one of these for some time like i was you should buy it. After a few book purchases at 2$ the kindle will pay for itself and if you have online store prime you will find plenty of free books that are great that you can read. Worth every penny. -Notice from V. Jacqueline, Mississippi

So far i am loving my new e-reader. I had the older non-touch screen version (that had a keyboard! ) previously and i traded it in through online store's program to get credit for the purchase of this new e-reader. I thought i would miss the page-next buttons, so far though i really do not. A small part of me wishes there was a kick-stand feature (as in the next model up where there is a fancy case for such uses), but i didn't want to spring the extra cash just for a kick-stand. When i don't feel like holding the e-reader i prop it up on a dish (i am usually having some tea or coffee when i do a lot of reading so there is a dish next to me that had a scone or something too) or even my phone. . I was able to save a few bucks by reusing the original charger unit from my first kindle (remember when the kindles actually came with a wall plug, who would have thought, right? ) and it works just great. . I am glad i didn't spring more cash for the upper level kindles (there are two other options "above" this one). Definitely recommend. . Fwiw i read about 30-45 minutes a day now and my eyes enjoy the new reader very much. I have been charging this regularly every week (plug it in saturday morning, it's good to go by saturday night) and haven't had any issues.

- R. JosephineLet me preface this by saving that this is my review on online store evahhh! i'm a prime member and their customer service is second to none. Now on to the kindle paperwhite. . I have an ipad air and love it. I downloaded a ton books over the years and i rarely ended up reading them. Why? size in my hands and the glare when reading outside. I took a chance and got the kindle. Guess what? i'm reading all the time! i read at the beach. I read on the throne (tmi), and i even started reading when i go to bed (again after many years). . It takes a little getting used to regarding the navigation of the device but the helpful digital how-to booklet included got me on my way quickly. Honestly i really love this device. It's the perfect size in my hand, zero glare, lightweight but sturdy, great battery life, yada, yada, yada. I miss the colors of the ipad but there's also something old school and soulful having it be in black and white. I'll call it digital nostalgia, (i just made that up). . I read some reviews about the screen being beige, etc. Mine has none of that. It works great and i couldn't be happier. Highly recommend.

This is the one to get at such a reasonable price. And add a case to cover it and your set. Had an e-reader for over six years. The one with the keyboard. Liked that and the ease to use. Well this one is like buying a rolls royce and the other was a chevrolet spark. Had no idea i could transfer my old books. Did and in came 200 off my old e-reader. Pleasant surprise. The picture is clear. You will get the exact font to you liking. Light with an abundant of features. To many to list here. Just read about it and it is a easy read for all the things you can do with it. Had no idea i was so far behind and got mine on sale as well. From junior high on up schools should have these for the students for free use.

I didn't what to expect. I wasn't sure i would like reading on a kindle but it's great. It is very convenient. It does not strain my eyes. It weighs less than a "real" book. I can read lying down on my side without an issue (it's not that easy with a paperback book). . I also love the fact that i can rent e-books from my local library - it's a lot easier to pick up and return this way! . . Overall, i love it. The only downside is that e-cookbooks don't always compare to their paperback counterparts (table of contents, black-and white pictures, etc. ). -Notice from D. Suzanne, Gateshead

I was unsure about this product at first; it was not what i expected. In today's world of enhanced technology and hd, i was initially unimpressed by the black and white and the "ghosting" that occurs when browsing or attempting to scroll. I thought the kindle was defective at first. I debated if i should have purchased a kindle fire for the same price. But after thorough research, i decided this version is for me. The gray scale is easy on the eyes (great since my work already requires me to stare at a computer all day), you can read in direct sunlight, the battery life lasts days, it offers less distractions as it is solely for reading, and it's lightweight. I don't know why some have complained about the ease of page turning; the transition seems smooth to me. It would be nice to browse for books in color or from a more enhanced web browser. And i cannot see book ratings as readily from goodreads on the device. But otherwise, i love my kindle. It's my first e reader! it took some getting used to, but i love that i now have thousands of books conveniently at my fingertips.

- N. CunninghamThis is my first time with online store kindle after i have been waiting for more than 5 years to finally found the right one with features i need. I kept looking at the previous version of kindle from time to time and didn't like some design like the page turn button or physical keyboard and finally these recent versions have interested me until decided to own one. It is very simple to use device, nothing complicated during the set up, device synchronization is very clever as i already have kindle software installed on my samsung mobile phone. Even with this device at the entry level but the display resolution is just sharp as it should except when the battery nearly run out. Holding it in one hand is not fatigue at all even 2-3 hours of reading. Touch screen responds naturally just as i expected. The one star i did not give to this device is because the way kindle refresh the page which is a little bit not smooth, it always blink once or twice when i press the power button to wake it up from its sleep page. However, if you can overlook this one down side, the overall of the device is very impressive. Thank you for creating such a brilliant product for us.

I've had a nook ereader for the longest time and when i receieved their newest version (nook glowlight plus) i spent hours trying to set it up so that i can download ebooks from the library. Guess what. It didn't work. There is an apparent glitch that they knew about since november. The employees in the store won't tell you about the glitch. In total, i wasted 9 hours trying to set up the newest nook just to be able to download ebooks from the library. 3 1/2 hours on my own - then an hour in the store - then another 4 1/2 hours wheni got home. I was so mad! that is when i turned to the online store kindle. . I was so happy when the kindle showed up at my house :). I set the kindle up within minutes and couldn't believe how quickly i have a book to read! it's simple to connect to the library system (as long as you have a library card). . When i'm ready for a new tablet i'll tell you that i won't look any further than kindle's version. . Spend the extra few bucks on a kindle. It will be worth it!

The F.A.Q. for kindle voyage e-reader, 6 high-resolution display 300 ppi with adaptive built-in light, pagepress sensors, wi-fi - includes special offers

First of all let me state that i am an avid reader, at least a few hours each day, and it took me a long time to justify the cost of owning a dedicated ereader, more so with purchasing the most expensive one on the market. But, after a few years ereading, starting with the original ipad, then an ipad mini, then a kindle fire, i finally decided to take the plunge and buy a kindle, specifically the voyage with 3g. Why after so many years? i think the increase in resolution and the frustration with compromise during my many hours of reading made the choice ultimately an easy one. . In comparison to the kindle fire:. . It is smaller. I have the 7" hdx, and even that feels incredibly bulky next to the voyage. The resolution is so similar that the eye cannot really discern the difference (323 ppi for the fire vs 300 ppi for the voyage). My one complaint about the fire was that i generally hold the reader with my left hand, making a page turn a two handed evolution. The voyage corrected this shortfall with the pagepress sensors; i can't say enough about how this small change has drastically impacted my reading experience for the better. Another aspect that discouraged me from buying a dedicated ereader was the lack of color; i thought that books looked lifeless and bland. I wanted the cover to show the rich colors of a real book, and that is still lacking in the voyage, but the eink display feels so much more like reading an actual book it more than makes up for this shortfall. While reading, which is 99. 9% of the time, this is not even a factor. . Once the libraries began the digital lending the kindle was a must buy for me, hence the original fire. . Would i make this purchase again? without a doubt; it is my favorite tech purchase of all time and i would give up my phone and tablets before i gave up the voyage. Well done online store!

I have had my kindle voyage for nearly 2. 5 years now, and i love it! i use it all the time. The light is nice and bright, though i usually keep it dim. I usually read just before bed, when i want the light to be dim not to keep me awake, or in well lit places, when i don't need device light. The books download quickly over wifi, assuming i have a good connection. . One con would be that it's a bit *too* thin for me to hold comfortably. But that problem is easily solved by keeping it in a case. . Speaking of cases, i love the online store origami case. When i got this device, that was the only case available. I thought i would hate it, but i *love* it! i do a lot of reading at a counter, and i can just set the case and kindle on the counter without having to hold it. It's so convenient. Sometimes i use the folded case at night, as well. When the angle is not great, i simply flatten the case and prop it up with one hand (which i use to turn pages). Thanks to the page turn "buttons" on either side, i can use whichever hand is more convenient.

Best kindle voyage 6 inch 4gb ereader (53 002680) in review

I received this on april 8th, charged it. I figured i would use it through a full charge to write a review, and am astounded that it finally gave a low battery warning today, may 1st, almost a month. I also read on a phone away from home, so that's not all reading, but it is still astounding. And wifi on all the time, screen about 10. . My primary likes:. . - very thin, very light, very nice texture and feel in the hand. . - as mentioned - terrific battery life. . - extremely easy to see in all lights - i worried with the complaints of uneven or colored light, but i mostly read in the dark (in bed) and at all illuminations the light is very evenly colored and evenly spread over the screen. The auto-adjustment works well. I can't tell if the night-time dim-down-as-eyes-adjust does anything, i never notice it (it is turned on), but what it does do works great. . - crisp, clear screen. . - big surprise: i bought with ads, planning to be annoyed. I don't even notice them; they appear primarily on the screen saver and . So what. I'll keep my $20. . Pointless feature: to me i find the pressure sensitive, tactile feedback pointless. I can't seem to hold it for any period of time, one handed, so as to press there. 99% of the time i just touch the page (often with the one-handed thumb holding) to turn the page. No big deal, just not something i find useful at all. The good news is it's not so sensitive as to cause problems. . Dislikes:. . - probably not specific to voyage, but i find the menu structure a bit annoying; it's ok, but it is not intuitive where to find things. . Would i have been as happy with the paperwhite? maybe. Though having held both, the slight weight/size advantage is more significant than it might seem. I look at it this way - i'll spend many, many hours, and probably lots of money for books, reading this. The price difference over its life is kind of lost in the noise. I'd rather spend that than wonder "would this be more comfortable to read on the voyage". . Update 6/6/15: i continue to be amazed with the battery life, i have now charged only 3 times including the initial. I took it on a brief vacation and used it in more difficult situations, bright sun, riding in a car, various places in hotels, etc. It adjusted the light each time quickly and the result was a near ideal amount of contrast. It is really a pleasure to read. I still find no use for the touch-sensitive page turners, and just come to think of them as a non-slip grip. I frequently read on my smartphone with the kindle app when out without the voyage, it is readable but not nearly as pleasant - however the auto-sync between is very handy, i don't have to plan ahead or carry a paperback (or voyage), if i have some downtime i just pick out the phone and can pick up reading wherever i was before. No regrets at all.

After reading other reviews i was fully prepared to have to return my voyage due to the lighting problem. Very, very few reviews had no problems. So when my voyage arrived march 7th i almost jumped for joy! no problems at all, just a lovely white background all over. I don't know if being a later adopter helped or not. I haven't seen anywhere that online store fixed a problem that they were definitely aware of. The voyage is sleek, feels much smaller than my paperwhite 2 (smaller than the dimensions given) and is so light to hold. I was taken aback by the redesign of the home page but i think that i'm getting used to it. It still seems a nuisance to have to swipe for downloaded books. I don't find the cloud very helpful either as it set up like my kindle hdx. Truly i'm glad that i have my preferred book listing on my paperwhite. I haven't used the auto light, i prefer to suit myself. It came pre-registered to me and i was able to quickly change it to read deb's voyage. The screen is nicer than the paperwhite's, less glare but smoother. I love the way the bezel is flush with the glass. I don't know if i have weak thumbs (lol) but the forward page turning doesn't seem to work for me. I am left handed but hold the voyage in my right hand. The back page i'm able to use without problems. Battery charge time for me is equal to the paperwhite, but i read a book (2500 pages) a day. Being retired enables this. ! these are the items that stand out for me. With the constant lighting over the page i am able to give this e-reader 5 stars.

I had one of the first generation kindles years ago, and it finally died a while back. I really like reading but find that i don't really like reading on my iphone or ipad for some reason. The kindle voyage doesn't disappoint - the display is clear and crisp, i can sit outside in bright sunlight and read, and i can lay in bed in the dark and read, and it's just a really pleasant experience. . I am getting use to the physical page turn buttons on either side on the screen. They can be configured to provide haptic feedback which works ok unless you have a case on the device (i have the origami case). With a case, the feedback even on the highest setting is a bit difficult to feel. I also though may kindle was defective because the left-hand large page turn button doesn't turn the the previous page, it turns to the next page. You use the smaller dot-shaped page turn buttons to go back a page, i found this unintuitive and i wish kindle could be confirmed so that the large page turn buttons could go forward and back. . The backlighting is excellent, with a wide enough range of manual adjustment to suit most any reading conditions. The auto backlight feature works ok, but not stellar, i tend to manually set the brightness level since the automatic system doesn't always get the level correct. . Still, i'm giving this 5 starts because it is an excellent version of the kindle product line, and it gets out of the way when i'm reading and lets me focus on what i'm reading, not on the device itself.

. Alma, Blackpool says

This is my third kindle device in almost 3 months. After getting tired of the eye strain of reading kindle books on a smartphone device, i decided to bite the bullet and purchase an actual ereader device. During the time i decided to make my purchase, i happened to see the kindle oasis advertised. Since it was marketed as being the best kindle ever and i had not had a kindle before, i decided that i should just buy the best one on the market. . I did not like the kindle oasis. It was a nice device as far as reading (extremely light, ) but it was almost uncomfortably light and too thin. I also did not like the physical page buttons as i could never comfortably get my fingers to line up with the buttons. . Fearing that the kindle voyage would be somewhat the same as the oasis, i decided to get the paperweight instead. Unfortunately this device proved to be too heavy and not comfortable to hold in one hand. I finally decided to give the kindle voyage a try and was pleasantly surprised on how light and easy to hold it was especially with the origami case. I have found the kindle voyage to be a nice midpoint e-reader device that was not too expensive and light enough to hold comfortably. The only issue that i have with the voyage, and it is a minor one, is that sometimes pagepress is not responsive. However, i do not mind touching the screen to turn the page as it does not hinder my reading experience at all. All in all i'm very pleased with this purchase.

After 2 1/2 years my nook simple touch finally gave out so i started looking for a new e-reader. I have the ipad mini, but do not enjoy reading on it. I read an average of 2 hours a day and sometimes more. I liked the nook, but i believe that bn has stepped out of the eink industry as they have had no significant upgrades for quite sometime. I compared the kindle paperwhite and the voyage at bestbuy and if i'd already had the paperwhite, i most likely would not have taken the voyage. But given that i was at ground zero i went with the voyage. If cost is not a factor, go with the voyage, it is a step up all the way around from the paperwhite.

O. Campbell, California says

If you're a dedicated reader and have a voracious appetite for good books then the upgrade to a kindle voyage is worth it and more! . . I was coming from a second generation kindle paperwhite which i loved, but the increased resolution, thinner and lighter design, high-quality construction, edge-to-edge glass, and ambient light sensor were all reasons i upgraded. Just further perfects the reading experience. The nightlight and ambient light sensor are very welcome additions so that i don't have to constantly adjust the brightness myself any longer. . One thing to note is the light sensor is in the upper left-hand corner of the frame on the voyage. Be careful to not cover this with a finger or thumb or you will notice your screen darken even in a bright environment. Can be a minor annoyance if you're not aware of this, but very easy to avoid once you know it's there. . I went with the wifi only, special offers version and unless you don't have broadband (and a wireless network) at your home or if you don't frequent businesses or establishments which also offer free wifi there is no reason to get the 3g version. With most tablets or phones being able to become hotspots these days you can always use your phone or tablet as a wifi hotspot if you need to download some new books in a pinch. Save yourself some money and forego the 3g model. Also, save yourself some initial money and go with the special offers version. If you get tired of the adds you can always pay online store a one-time fee down the road to get rid of them. I did this on my last kindle, but think i won't do it on this one. I actually like some of the offers and they're very unobtrusive. They only appear on the "sleep" screen and on the initial home screen. This is the way to do an ad-supported device right. . All-in-all i'm wicked satisfied with the voyage and if you're like me, you may own tablets, laptops, smart phones, etc. And i also still collect first edition hard-cover books, but for reading every day and ultimate portability nothing beats the pure reading experience like this kindle. Very little fatigue reading this in bed and i just love that it's such a simple and seamless experience. . Yes, it's way more money than any kindle before, but it's way more of a refined and high-quality product. The care is magnesium, the edge-to-edge glass is micro-etched to reduce glare. It's very "apple" like in its attention to detail, material quality, and design. Which i think is a huge compliment! online store has to be losing on every one they sell hoping to recoup through ebook sales because the engineering and material costs alone would be way more than just $199. It was expensive internals and materials. If you're on the fence, get this kindle! it's worth the upgrade and if you're a first-timer to the kindle family and a dedicated book enthusiast and reader you won't be disappointed.

W. Finch, Prince Edward Island

I am giving my new kindle voyage five stars at this time but the rating may change sometime down the line as i've only had it for two weeks. I think it is important to say that i am a senior citizen with hand tremors in both hands. This makes it very difficult to perform the most common everyday actions like writing, eating and turning pages in a book. The voyage is just great (so far) as the bars/buttons are easy to press to turn pages forward and back and my shaky hands seldom screw it up. Also, when i press to turn the page the response is very quick and gentle, not so jerky as the last kindle i had. Sometimes that would make me uncertain if it had gone to the next page or the previous one. The size and weight are especially nice as i carry my kindle everywhere with me. I would advise you to buy a book-style cover for it because otherwise i think the screen would get scratched. The default screen color is soft rather than that bright white which hurt my eyes and always had to be adjusted, though i never found a color range that worked really well for my sensitive eyes. I'm still learning to use the other features so i can't give you any help there. But i've had several kindles and loved them all. I managed to wear the last one out. Call me a satisfied customer.

B. Wayt, Havering says

Hello, . What can we say that has not been said about this wonderful reader? we were hard core book readers with an average book taking several days. We always looked forward to the local book stores and costco. But, something happened to both that made us electronic readers. The book selection started to get weird and sparce, while the prices started rising so fast that it was not worth it to pay $16 for a book that takes several days to read. Plus, did we say the selection started to get bad? whoever used to select the books at costco must be on an extended vacation. It is just awful, now. But the selection from online store books for this kindle voyage is so much better and faster. The loading from online store is much faster and we can be anywhere in the house to download the selection. Before it took sitting in front of the wireless router to download the book selection. So, do we like this new reader? yes. 5 stars definitely. Lighter, brighter, handier and fits in any purse for on the go vacation reads. An excellent product and so much better than anything on the market.

The voyage is a huge improvement in both clarity of text and conformity of screen lighting over the first generation paperwhite. That being said, it is certainly not perfect. At this point, i am convinced that there is not a kindle voyage that does not have some level of the yellow gradient lighting toward the top of the screen, but i will certainly take that over the splotchy pink, blue, and green hued shadows that plagued the first generation paperwhite. The attached photos show a comparison between the voyage (left) and first generation paperwhite (right), as well as two solo shots of the voyage, one in a well lit room and one in a dark room. I think the camera slightly exaggerates the yellow gradient, but it is definitely visible in person. I also took the voyage/paperwhite comparison photos in a relatively low light environment, which makes both the yellow of the voyage and splotchiness of the paperwhite more apparent. At this point i think my eyes have adjusted to the gradual whitening of the screen, but if i flip the voyage upside down the gradient is very noticeable. I have considered an exchange, but i went through that with my paperwhite and ultimately ended up sticking with the original.

Display is flawless. Voyage has a nice sturdy feel to it but is very light. The back is made so it just kind of gets lost in your hand. Very comfortable to hold. And did i mention the display! gorgeous. . Now for the problems. The page press isn't nearly as great as i was expecting. I have it on the lowest pressure setting and still have to work it to get it to turn. It's not that different than touching the screen honestly. Second, the adaptive lighting doesn't work nearly as well as it should. I have tried it in many different degrees of light and it doesn't adjust it to a comfortable level for me to read. I've been setting it manually. . So the four things for me:. Display a+. Construction a+. Page press d. Adaptive light d. . Overall i would give it a b because the display is so pristine and i love the feel of it. Just disappointed in the other features. An $80 jump in price is a lot especially when the paperwhite has the same display now.

I switched from sony e-readers in 2014 to the kindle paperwhite and have not looked back. I love the weight of the voyager, the ease of changing the font and the background lighting. . I read everyday for hours. I find the battery lasts me two weeks with me reading at least 2-3 hours daily, half the time with the back light on. . I had to get used to the page turn in the position it is in, now i don't even notice it, whether i am tapping to turn pages or using the button. . One thing i don't like is, the library still does not alphabetize my books, which becomes annoying when i am reading books in a series. I had to get another cover as my paperwhite cover is too big, which wasn't a problem. Overall, i haven't touched my paper white in months and there isn't anything wrong with it. . I do agree that if you have the second gen paper white and don't have money to throw around, that one could wait on a new purchase.

My paperwhite was good to begin with, but the voyage is even better. It's a noticeable difference between my paperwhite and a huge difference between my other ereader (yes, i own 2 different ereaders). It's got such crisp, clean letters, like an actual book. The difference was so noticeable that it is difficult to go from the voyage to my other ereader (i'll have to upgrade my other ereader too) & i retired my paperwhite! if you read a lot, as well as many books at a time, the voyage is the best kindle choice between the paperwhite and the voyage! it's the closest to a real book but w/o the weight & bulk! the device itself is the right size and weight. It fits in my small hip bag & i never leave home without it! i can read it any light, indoor or outdoor, day or night! the backlight spreads out so evenly, that it's practically unnoticeable. I like that it can be set to auto or manual. That the light will turn on with the device, not have to be turned on separately, unlike other ereader i own. I find that it's the ereader i prefer to read with! especially when i prefer real books any day but sometimes that's just not feasible!

Being an audible book fanatic, it took a long time for me to purchase an ereader and quite a bit of review reading before making my decision - kindle voyage v. Kindle paperwhite. I decided to invest in the kindle voyage wifi for the slightly lighter weight, longer battery life, and better screen. I also decided to go with a refurbished unit because it was much less expensive, but still backed by online store's fabulous return policies. The kindle voyage cost me $50 more than the kindle paperwhite. Was it worth it? i have nothing to compare it to as i had never tried the kindle paperwhite, but it has opened up the world of reading to me. Before i used my tablet for reading and found that eye strain hampered my enjoyment. Since getting the voyage, i haven't had any issues with eye strain - at night or during the day. Easy to hold for long periods, easy to operate - online store has brought the joy back to reading. I bought an inexpensive sleeve from bear motion to protect the unit when not in use. It doesn't need a screen protector or a case. And, my phone charger works beautifully. Do i have any "cons"? yes, but this is the best book reader on the market. It is not for audio, email, magazines, or newspapers. I'm really enjoying it.

E. Pearson, Tower Hamlets

This is the first e-reader i purchased. I am very happy with my choice and don't regret the price. I no longer have the space for more books on the shelves and it's not always convenient for me to borrow books from the library in person. . I use the auto light and more importantly to me the night light feature which allows your eyes time to adjust in the dark as the kindle gradually turns down the brightness. . My decision for the voyage over other options was for the following reasons:. . -the automatic light adjustment makes reading at night or in dim light a thought free process. . -it's comfortable and easy to read while laying down as opposed to worrying about the weight or light on the pages of a book or heavier e-book reader that lacks lighting. . -i enjoy using online store for most of my online purchases and their consistently good customer service and prices swayed me towards a kindle. . -overdrive through public libraries is an excellent source to borrow books and having a kindle to send books to from overdrive makes it a breeze. No more stopping by the library for me.

I was on the fence about purchasing the kindle voyage, then saw it on display at a local retailer and was struck by how gorgeous the screen was. After playing around with it a little at the store, i decided to get one. I like that the screen is a single piece of slightly textured glass, and i like the way the text seems to be at the surface of the glass, not beneath it. The higher dpi of the display is noticeably smoother and has better contrast to previous kindles and the return of the page turn buttons on the bezel is a nice addition, although i have enormous hands and don't really use them. All in all, i really like the device. I just have one issue which i hope online store will address in the near future. . It's time for a larger screen! . . I'm not talking some 10 inch monstrosity like the dx, just a slightly taller, slightly wider screen. Say 7" or 8". The kindle in all it's iterations has always, for me, felt a little cramped in the screen real estate department. Almost toy-like. I've always felt like i am constantly turning the page, turning the page, turning the page. Hopefully, online store will see the error of their ways and introduce a premium, voyage-like reader with a 7 or 8 inch display. I know it would be an instant buy for me. If you agree with me about this, like my review, or leave a comment. I am curious just how many other readers out there think the kindle's screen is just a tad too little. . They could call it the kindle voyage xl or something. . I would give this device 5 stars but to me the bezels are just a little too narrow, making it difficult for me to hold in my adult male size hands without obscuring the text or accidentally triggering a page turn. I've ordered a book-like cover for the thing (not the ridiculous flip-top origami cover online store is offering) so hopefully i will be able to handle this thing a little more comfortably with a cover to hold onto. . Sometimes, online store, bigger is better. The decreased weight doesn't really help when you've got to pinch the narrow bezel between your thumb and index finger to hold it. Maybe it's perfect for the average size person, but for me the ergonomics of the device is just slightly off.

I love my kindle voyage! i bought it on the 4-pay installment plan. Just like a home layaway. So, the user interface is much improved since my last gen 3 kindle touch. The interface is much more user friendly, and its far easier to navigate. I like being able to organize my books into folders by genre. It has a great battery life too. With moderate use i get about a month on it, and that's leaving the wifi running. Usually i turn off the wifi because im just reading and don't need wifi, and i dont typically use the backlight. That gets me an extra 2 or 3 weeks on battery. . The backlight is very nice. You can set it manually to the level you want, or it will automatically dim as the light dims. It works so well you don't know it's dimming. I love it for when i need it. . I recycled my folio from my old kindle touch. Its adequate, but the power button on the voyage is on the back. This means you need a folio just for the voyage with a hole cut in the rear for the button. For me, i just stick my finger behind the kindle and press the button. . Ive had a kindle 2 (old school white with keyboard) and generation 3 kindle touch, and this one. This thing is the cadillac of kindles. You won't be disappointed.

When i lost my paperwhite, i replaced it with the voyage e-reader. The biggest differences are that the voyage has a slightly smaller size and weight, the full charge time is 1 hour less and the font light adjusts automatically. I thought there were sufficient benefits to pay the additional $60 for it. . I have owned a kindle paperwhite and have enjoyed it immensely. It is far superior to my ipad. The difference is in the kindle e-reader back lighting. When using the ipad in the sun or shade, it is difficult to read. The kindle works great in all types of lighting. . Now, i realize i should have just bought another paper white. If my wife should lose her paper white, i will recommend that she not purchase the voyage and continue with the paper white. In my opinion, the additional $60 cost is not worth the difference. . The voyage e-reader is still a great product, i just believe that you will get more bang for the buck with a paperwhite.

Lots of comments on this already so i'll keep mine short and to the point. The pros for me were paperwhite experience, but with lighting. Not the backlight of a tablet, though, so its easier on the eyes, nor do you get the glare of using a tablet. It's very lightweight. It does not perfectly fit in the case i had for my old kindle, and if i carried it around a lot i would get a different case. But it works well enough. The difference is in the height of the device. This voyage is a bit shorter than my old one. Simpler to adjust things light and font size. It gives you multiple options for page turning. You can swipe, tap the screen in certain sections, or use the buttons. I tend to swipe as it is most intuitive. The buttons are more like touch sensitive spots on the frame. They work well in theory, but finding exactly the right spot in low light is frustrating. Fortunately, you are not limited to that. I can use the same charger as with my old one, and i think the battery lasts a little longer. . There was an upgrade to my previous kindle which included the "page flip" option. That is standard with the voyage, and provides you with two experiences. One is a single page in the foreground without losing the page you are on. The other shows you 9 pages . Yes, nine. No, you can't actually read any of them because nine pages on the small screen means the print is not legible. I'm not sure why this is an option, i don't see any purpose to it. But the single page option is still there and works just fine. . All in all, i am happy with my purchase.

Since other people have gone into detail on the device, i will answer only the burning questions i had before i received mine. I was very happy with my paperwhite and would not have bought this had mine not been stolen/lost (not sure which). My husband still has his paperwhite, so i was able to compare them side by side. . Can i use the wall charger from my paperwhite to charge the voyage? . . Yes. . Can pressing the page turners cause repetitive use issues? . . I don't think so. You can turn down the pressure it needs (which is very slight) or you can turn it off completely and turn pages with a tap. It's actually nice to have both options. . Can you see where to turn the pages in the dark? . . No. You can guess where the page forward area is, but the page back is a dot, so guessing would be difficult. But you can still tap to turn pages. Using a cover helps, as the edge of the cover would be right over the dot. . Does the feedback buzz annoy you when you turn pages? . . I think it does take a little getting used to, but you can turn it down, and i think i will not notice it after a while. (there's no sound; it's purely tactile. ) months later: it's not distracting; you forget about it. . . Is the adjustable light nice? . . I still do it manually. It doesn't adjust the way i'd like it to. Not as bright in good light as i'd like, and not as dim while my husband is sleeping next to me. Note that if you want to use the "night light, " you have to set that separately from auto adjust. Settings/device options/screen light. I'm not actually sure that the night light is working. It was at 18 when i turned off the light (this is quite bright), and i checked it about 10 minutes later, and it was at 17. My eyes adjust a lot faster than that. I turned it down manually to about 7. . Can i use the cover/case from my paperwhite for the voyage? . . I had a fintie, and i tried it. The entire reading area was still completely visible, but there was about 1/4" of extra space above and i couldn't access the power button. You need to access the power button in the back to wake it out of screen saver mode, and you'd have to take it out of the cover to do that. It would protect it, though, in a suitcase while you're traveling. I ended up buying another fintie for the voyage and i'm very happy with it. . Is the crispness of the text and whiteness of the background better than the paperwhite? . . When i originally wrote this review it was. But online store recently upgraded the paperwhite and the newest version now has the same screen resolution as the voyage. Although i don't have the two of them to compare (my husband has the earlier version paperwhite), i understand that the text on the voyage is still a tad crisper and clearer. See the update in my conclusion below. . Any issues? . . I do not have any of the page hue issues that others have. The screen is uniformly white. . At first, i was having a problem with the page turners being located at just the spot where i like to hold the device. It took a while to find a comfortable way to hold it consistently. My thumb kept wanting to move to that spot, causing me to inadvertently change pages. Using a cover helps. . Books in the public domain and a couple of tips. . There is a way to easily download public domain books from project gutenberg on your kindle by using the experimental browser. Open the browser on your kindle (in the main menu) and type in the url: this will open a link to what's known as the magic catalog. When you have downloaded the catalog, it will appear on your home page and will look like a book. When you open it, you will see it is a listing of all the books in project gutenberg, and all these books are linked to their website. You can search for something (like, say, peter pan), and download it from the catalog right onto your device without having to connect to a computer. Very nifty. This can be done on any kindle, not just the voyage. Be sure to use the domain name org, not com. Freekindlebooks. Com is something completely different. . You can also download books from the mobile site: m. Gutenberg. Org. But you would have to open the browser each time, as opposed to the magic catalog, where the links are already there. . Tips:. . Know that you can turn off the public notes and highlights that appear in your book, and you can also turn off the "recommended content" that appears on the bottom of your home page. . Conclusion:. . If you are happy with your paperwhite, i would recommend sticking with it. Only buy the voyage if you have money to throw around and like buying all the latest gadgets. The voyage is fabulous, but the paperwhite is perfectly fine. If you have a keyboard kindle, the paperwhite is much better than what you have in terms of clarity, brightness and readability. Update 7/9/15. There is a new paperwhite. It has the same screen resolution as the voyage, but the voyage text is still a bit more clear and crisp. The main differences between them are that the voyage has the page turns on the bezel (with the paperwhite you have to tap the screen), and the voyage is thinner. The voyage's screen is flush with the bezel and is made from a kind of glass rather than plastic. The new paperwhite is $119 vs. $199 for the voyage. . . Leave me a comment if you need further instructions on anything.

We bought two of these "kindle voyage, 6" high-resolution display (300 ppi) with adaptive built-in light, pagepress sensors, wi-fi" devices at another retailer (whose initials are bb) simply to ease the return process in case we got units with bad screens (it looks like somewhere between 5 and 10 percent of these reviewers are having that issue). I'm happy to report that both of our voyages have fine displays. We're upgrading from our old kindle paperwhites, though, so even though there are a lot of improvements, they're not earth-shattering. Basically, the display is a bit better, but not a lot. The interface is a bit faster, but not a lot. The hardware's a bit smaller and lighter, but not a lot. The pagepress buttons are nice, but not a lot (even though i've got the level of effort turned all the way down on that, i still find it harder to turn pages that way than just tapping on the screen). I'd say there are only two things which are significantly different between the voyage and the paperwhite (and they're both minor). On the plus side, the change in location of the power button from the bottom of the device to the back-right of the device is really nice: it's a lot more convenient and easy to use than before. On the negative side, the length of the provided usb charging/data cable and the lack of an ac adapter (actually, that last might be a change from several versions back) is disappointing. My old cable is about 6 feet long. The new one is about 5 feet long. That loss of a foot means the new cable is too short for where i use it. For the price of the voyage, online store should have included a rapid charging system with a longer cable. . So, overall, even though we're pleased with these voyages (i'm rating them at a very good 4 stars out of 5), i'm not sure everyone would consider the improvements to be worth the extra price. If you're coming from several generations of kindle back (or don't have one at all), go ahead and get this. But, if you're just one generation of kindle back, it's more of a personal preference.

I owned a first-gen kindle. . It was an odd-looking thing. Clunky. But i used it for about six months, put it away, and sold it at a garage sale awhile later. . Now - i'm back into reading. And with the invention of being able to loan books digitally from a library, i found reason for owning a kindle. . I love the voyage. Battery holds a good charge. Adaptive brightness is great. Pagepress "buttons" are nice to give a little squeeze to pop over to the next page. . But more importantly: kindle has kindled my love of reading again. Really. We live in an age where we all want things now. I don't want to have to drive to the library, or order a book on online store and wait a couple of days. I want to read that book as soon as i can. And i can, either digitally borrowing a book (granted it has no holds) or buying digitally.

What an amazing device. . Screen: 5+ stars. Oh my goodness this is the most beautiful e-ink screen i've ever seen. The paperwhite was a big upgrade but it's like blowing in a hurricane compared to the voyage. It looks amazing; you might not. . Using it: 5 stars. It's so light it's scary. First time you'll carry it around you'll either think you've gained the ability to carry a lot more (don't go to the gym immediately thereafter) or that you'll break it if you hold it too strongly. Everything moves snappy, you can jump pages, move from one book to another, highlight and it's done without a second thought. I love the fact the hard drive has doubled so i can carry anything and everything i could ever want. . Cloud: 5 stars. While it is easy to navigate, and downloading is a breeze, for whatever reason my cloud collections aren't downloading or organizing themselves on my device. Instead to see my collections i have to go to the cloud (it actually prevents me from hitting device) and won't let me organize then from most recent onwards, like my paperwhite did. Not sure what the problem is, had enough trouble just getting my collections to show up. Update: with the help of a nice online store commenter, the cloud issues have been resolved and therefore it's been moved to 5 stars). . Price: 3 stars. This is the problem. It's the biggest increase in prices and the most expensive e-reader since i received the second generation as a gift. I had to drop the 3g that i've loved from the k2 just because it's impossible to explain away a $269 e-reader when i paid $150 or so for a 3g 1st gen paperwhite. If you aren't a hardcore reader, or let alone someone not in a solid career, it might be hard to justify this when the current paperwhite is no slouch in any department.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

H. Dorine, Australian Capital Territory says

I have been a dedicated kindle user for many years and read over 100 books per year. In november 2014 i purchased a kindle voyage after the page turn buttons on my original kindle stopped working. As it was 4 years old, i felt i had my money's worth. I loved the new kindle voyage, however after the automatic software update a few weeks ago, it stopped working. After multiple calls to technical support and customer service over a three week period, the only option i was given was to buy a new one as it was out of warranty. As the kindle worked fine prior to the software update, the price of the voyage is high for only getting 14 months use out of it.

I purchased the voyager when they first came out in late 2014 - actually i was on a wait list and didn't receive it until mid-december. About 2 weeks ago it began charging erratically. After trying many re-boots and an entire new cable and power adapter, it still continue to charge erratically. Upon calling online store (who i purchased it from directly) i was informed that it was a 'lose port' which was a 'defect'. However, because the one-year warranty had expired (we're talking by no more than 30 days), they refused to provide me with a product that was not defective unless i wanted to purchase a brand new voyager or an 'off market" (meaning older version of a kindle) version. Online store used to be a company who was proud of what they sold and would never ask a customer to re-purchase a defective product. I am disappointed in their management which believes that as customers we just can constantly buy inferior products.

My original kindle paperwhite just wouldn't hold a charge after 6 years, so i ordered a new kindle. I love the ability to take books with me on a kindle but i'm not lovin' this device. Personally, i prefer a white case since i frequently read in the florida sun and the black device gets warm. The model i selected isn't available in white. I also would like a slightly larger device because i often rest it on my stomach when either lounging by the pool or reading in bed. I also read a lot on the elliptical machine at my gym and the smaller device feels a bit less stable making me concerned it will fall off. This device seems much slower to respond when downloading books or doing anything which requires internet access. I haven't yet figured out how to shut off the network connection or the text lighted to lengthen my battery life. I'm finding the text lighting tougher on my eyes than without it, though in hotels where reading lights aren't good, i suspect it will be helpful. Lastly, i was really hoping online store would design a larger device so it could hold a larger screen. Right now, i feel like i am advancing the page way too often.  kindle voyage e-reader, 6" high-resolution display (300 ppi) with adaptive built-in light, pagepress sensors, wi-fi - includes special offers

I have both voyage and paperwhite. The battery life is the same or very similar. The screen resolution is the same. Voyage is lighter by less than 1oz (25 gram weight difference). This is a negligible difference, a typical kindle cover is several times heavier than the difference in weight between the two devices. I gave both devices to play around to a few friends who were not very familiar with kindles. Nobody has a strong preference- about half liked paperwhite a bit better, the other half slightly preferred voyage. I personally like a slightly sturdier feel of paperwhite but it is a matter of taste. Other reviews mention that voyage uses costly materials it may be true but it did not make the product any better. The reading experience on two devices is identical. The main difference is that voyage has a few more leds to brighten the screen. This means that when the screen of paperwhite is at maximum brightness it looks identical to the screen of voyage when voyage is at about 80% of the max brightness. I never felt that my paperwhite is not bright enough, in fact when i read at night i use it at 50% brightness. Thus having a slightly brighter screen is not worth anything to me. The difference in brightness is so small that i can only notice it when comparing devices side by side. The other difference between paperwhite and voyage are the page turning buttons on voyage. I did not have any issues with page turning on paperwhite, for aesthetic reason i prefer not to have extra buttons but it does not really make a difference either. Finally, voyage can automatically adjust screen brightness. Unfortunately, i found that this feature did not work well for me- to get to the brightness that i prefer i had to make manual adjustment so i disabled that feature (it is disabled by default probably because many users prefer not to have it). . One more observation- origami cover is a neat idea but is absolutely useless- it turns into a not so sturdy book stand- for a small minority of users who are in a habit of reading while seating at a desk with a book in a book stand it is better just to pick up a book stand and keep it on a desk. For most people the origami cover dramatically increases the weight of the product without much benefit. I prefer to keep my kindle's in a sleeve. It is sleeve- this way when i read i can hold the kindle without holding the extra weight. Imo sleeves are a better and cheaper choice for both paperwhite and voyage. Online store pushes online store kindle covers very hard because they make more money on covers than on kindles themselves. . The bottom line- paperwhite and voyage are basically identical, if the price were the same choosing between the two would be difficult. Considering an enormous price difference the choice is obvious.

I love ebooks but at 14 months, under light use, good conditions, good care, this kindle froze permanently. One morning it worked, that evening it stopped. There was no special event (it wasnt dropped) that would have changed its status, it just stopped working. In my opinion this is a hardware defect. By google search i found this isn't uncommon and when it happens they become bricks like this one did, and online store doesn't cover this problem. Online store's "kindle support" responded by offering me a new replacement which at first i thought was great until they revealed the price of the replacement: $189 plus tax and shipping. In other words they were selling me a new one. Online store's normal customer service cannot deal with any kindle complaints so there's absolutely no way to get normally high quality online store customer service. They just transfer you to the overseas kindle department. If you buy this expecting a normally high quality online store customer service experience just be aware it doesn't exist for this product. They farm it out to overseas departments whose job is purely to let you down and sell you a new one. They explain the warranty is for 12 months so at 14 months its out of warranty and there is no coverage and no way to repair it, and they try to sell another one under the guise of a discount. At $199 i would think you could rely on getting more than 14 months especially under light use. If there is a hardware defect issue - and i believe there is - then i would expect online store to step up to the plate and replace their defective product. It's one of the worst customer service experiences i've encountered. Therefore i would not recommend this product.

Y. Imelda, Kansas

I loved the way the documents were rendered on the screen. No complaints here at all. It is clear and i was able to view more lines on a screen because of this. I didn't use the auto light change so i don't know if i like it or not. I like to control it myself. . I prefer to have page turning on the edges available. Having a choice is great. But i didn't like the way the edge turn work. I wish the feedback would have been more noticeable. It seems like it would be nice to be able to feel where to press, but i'm guessing they tried that and it wasn't liked. I changed the pressure needed and the feedback sound and couldn't find one i really liked. I still found this to be a positive and i just changed to screen tap when i read in the dark. . I didn't do any timings, but the voyage used the battery faster than my paperwhite. I went through the settings to make sure i was using the least amount of battery possible. It used noticeably more than my paperwhite. I read regularly and am quite accustomed to how often i charge my device and i am sure it was more often on the voyage. . The last and worst problem was using the screen tap to change pages. It slowed down or froze relatively often. The recommendation was to reset the device. To me this is not acceptable. It does not fix the problem, it temporarily clears it. I returned mine and will buy another one when they can say this problem is actually corrected.

Disappointed after using it daily for over 6 months. It skips pages going forward & backwards so you loose your place, changes font size. You have to hang onto it some how but each comfortable place around the bezel is too sensitive for the functions it performs. This is maddening! on my 4th kindle & the previous models didn't do this.

A. Beale, Cheshire

I've got mixed feelings on this one, unfortunately. This review is coming from a kindle enthusiast who has owned or used nearly every variation of the device since the 1st generation. . Size & weight. -. It's noticeably smaller and lighter than the paperwhite. When i saw the specs it didn't really strike me as something that would make much difference to me, but in real life it's actually great. The voyage fits into a few of my coat pockets that the paperwhite was just a little too big to fit into. . Origami cover. -. I know there's a separate product page for the origami cover, but it's worth mentioning here as it is the "official" cover. The origami cover is ugly and i was skeptical, but i actually love it. It's weird because it opens by flipping over the top like a notepad. This actually makes it more comfortable to hold when the cover is open, in my opinion. It's hard to describe, but there are a lot more ways to hold the voyage when it's attached to this cover, and just generally is more comfortable to use. The origami part of the case works great as well. It stands vertically or horizontally (if you're laying down and reading, this is amazing). . The other great new thing about this case is that the voyage attaches to it magnetically. It attaches and detaches very easily, unlike the paperwhite which seemed to be nearly permanently attached to the standard case. This is great because if you decide you want to read the device and appreciate how light/thin it is without a case attached, it's super easy to take it out. . It's pricey but worth it. . Pagepress. -. One of the new features is pagepress, which has sensors on the outer edge of the device that you can squeeze to turn pages. The device lets you adjust the sensitivity between low/med/high - by default it's set to medium. I found medium to require squeezing way too hard, what felt unnatural and more than any button would or should require to advance to the next page. I adjusted it to "low" and it works perfectly now. Thumb rests on the sensor, and a gentle squeeze advances the page, and haptic feedback (a tiny vibration/buzz) is there to give you a tactile response that the so-called button was pressed. The haptic feedback can be adjusted (low/med/high)or disabled as well. It doesn't trigger accidentally like i feared it might, and i actually really like it. . Auto brightness. -. The device now has a light sensor in the top left corner that is supposed to detect ambient light levels and adjust the brightness of the kindle accordingly. I've had very mixed results with this. First, auto brightness is disabled on the device by default - which seems odd given that it's one of the key new features of the device. The auto brightness worked very briefly when i first got the device, but it always seemed to be a little off from how i would like the screen to look. In lit rooms, it tended to be a little on the darker side, and in dark rooms it was too bright. . Well, shortly after using the voyage the auto brightness quit working altogether. I restarted the device a few times with no luck. After contacting support, they asked me to proceed with a factory reset. It's worked again since then, but doesn't leave me with a ton of confidence since it started acting up so quickly after getting the device. . Screen. -. I've seen the reports online of users who have a "two toned" screen - blueish on the bottom, yellowish on the top. I'm afraid to say that i have experienced this as well. Spending upwards of $200 for a luxury ereader, it's really surprising and disappointing that they haven't got this figured out by now - this is supposed to be a premium device and it's the 3rd generation frontlit reader for online store. This is reminiscent of the paperwhite v1 launch with all of the splotchy lighting - while it was a huge leap over the prior generation, you expect something like this to work perfectly. It doesn't. . The paperwhite v1 had splotchy lighting, paperwhite v2 was supposed to have "improved" lighting - which it did, but still wasn't perfect (mine still had some bright spots). But to be honest, the lighting on my paperwhite v2 looks better and more consistent than the voyage. It's unfortunate that this is a step back. I hope this isn't a widespread issue, but i fear that it is after seeing numerous users on other forums posting about it and sharing pictures of their device. It'll be a shame if the only upgrade next year will be a voyage v2 with "improved lighting", just like what happened with the paperwhite. I'll be more skeptical about being an early adopter next time. . Aside from the uneven lighting, which i can't decide how distracting it is, the contrast and picture quality of the screen is outstanding. When i compare the text from my paperwhite v2 to the voyage side-by-side, the text on the paperwhite almost looks blurry - which i wouldn't have believed until i saw it myself. . In conclusion, my favorite things about the voyage are how much more comfortable it is to use (the origami cover offering more ways to hold/use the device, the pagepress sensor working great), the quality of the screen is outstanding, but the uneven lighting and flakey auto brightness are leaving me disappointed. I'm not sure if these were rushed out too quickly or if online store has poor quality control, but either way it's unacceptable.

Giving this product three starts for now, partly because of customer service. Like many people, i notice a slight discoloration and unevenness in lighting. It is slightly tannish/yellowish toward the top and a bit bluer and whiter at the bottom. Honestly, i probably only noticed it because i looked for it after reading so many negative reviews. Do i wish the screen was uniform in lighting and appearance for the $220 i paid? yes. Is it enough for me to dislike the product? no. It's also only really slightly noticeable on a brightness setting above 10. Everything else on the device works perfectly - i have experienced no issues with the page press buttons as other users have, and honestly the screen is pretty great despite the minor lighting issue. . Anyway, i called customer service primarily to find out if it would be worth exchanging it for a new one in hopes of getting a device with a perfect screen, or if they all sort of have a minimal discoloration and i'll notice it on any device if i look for it. (basically i wanted an honest answer to save me from the hassle of exchanging product after product. ) the customer service rep i spoke to almost became frantic, assuring me i had a "faulty" device and a replacement would have no issues. Judging by the other reviews i've read, i do think the slight discoloration is just a result of the way the product is designed, and the people who claim they don't have the issue just don't notice it (i asked several friends what they thought - some noticed right away others not at all). I think the service rep might have misunderstood the issue i was referring to. In any case, she basically took it upon herself to issue a replacement (2 day shipping, brand new product). However, after checking on the status in my online store account an hour later, i noticed she had issued a standard shipping replacement of the $199. 00 voyage with ads (i had paid extra for the removed ads). I called back customer service to cancel the replacement who told me it had already been shipped and i could either send it back or reject the order when it comes. I plan on rejecting the package so it gets sent back - hopefully i don't end up with another $200 charge on my card from online store. . Anyway, does anyone have any input as to whether it's worth going through the hassle of replacing due to the uneven lighting issue? it doesn't bother me enough to dislike the product, and i really don't want to go through the headache of several returns just to keep getting new voyages with the same or worse default. However, if i end up with a perfect replacement, it would be worth the wait. If anyone has experience in this regard, feedback is appreciated!

I am an old kindle user (first keyboard kindle then kindle paperwhite) and i was looking forward to the voyage but to say the least it was an underwhelming experience. Because of the sensitivity of pagepress feature you have to be careful with your thumb and it is better to use both hands (that's when using a cover helps with a better grasp on the kindle). Don't do what i did: keep your paperwhite until you can afford a oasis. Kindle oasis model resolved all the older issues and it's price reflects it.

I really like most aspects of this kindle. The auto light function is nice, and i like being able to turn the page by pressing the frame, and the haptic feedback (though i know some people hate that). I also like that the pressure points for page turning on the frame are on both sides, so you can roll one-handed. Oh, and the function that stores words you look up so you can see if you remember them later is outstanding. That said, for the price, there haven't been many upgrades over the previous version. Some token stuff. And holy cow is the typing horrific. I write a lot of digital notes in kindle books. And the paperwhite i had before this was pretty bad for typing, but this sucker takes the cake. It's the worst touch typing on any type of machine i've ever experienced. You could write in the sand with your toe more accurately and rapidly. I'm not sure why it's so much worse for that than the paperwhite. The highlighting is a little difficult too. It's fine if you nail exactly what you want right away, but if you have to pull one of the ends of the highlight, forget about it, might as well start over. And you have to cover the entire highlight exactly again to remove it. Stupid. And highlighting across pages. Who would want to do that? maybe nobody other than me which is why they made it so hard.

I was prepared to love this newest kindle, i do not. I want to be honest. I have had a kindle since online store has produced them. I have loved them all. This is not at the top of my list. It is smaller, it is light weight, that is the only advantage over the paperwhite. I miss the touch of the paperwhite, it had texture. The voyage is flat and smooth. On the first night of reading i found that the living room lamp would have a glare on my screen. I had reposition myself to not have glare. I have not tried it outside yet. I never had glare with the paperwhite. I went to the voyage as i thought the pressure points for the pages would be nice, i missed that from the original kindles, they are not as responsive as i thought. I liked the original buttons better! frankly i like the forward page turning and back on the paperwhite much better. The touch is touchy on the voyage, very sluggish. Perhaps i will get on to it. For the money, i would take a paperwhite over the voyage any day. I would suggest this voyage if you want something smaller and more lightweight. I am sorry to be negative, but i am not that impressed.

I got this as an upgrade to my kindle touch. I wanted a lit screen for night reading so i was looking forward to upgrading. But no, i had to return it. I side load most of my books and this just doesn't work well for that. If you try to put non-cloud items in folders, it makes you go through two pop up windows saying that the book isn't cloud supported so it won't be backed up to the cloud in the collection. For every single non-cloud item you select to add to a collection. Every. Single. One. I have over 400 books, most non-online store, and i like to keep them organized. I was not going to go through that error message 800 times. (more, actually, since i put some books in multiple collections. ). . Yeah, not happening. I mean, i like the feel of the reader. I like the screen. I even like the page turn buttons. But to be so handicapped by cloud-related requirements? no thank you. I mean, if they had just put an option of "ignore this warning", i would have kept this reader and enjoyed it. But no. I have too many non-online store books and i like to keep my library organized within collections and those two attributes do not work together in online store's world. . I ended up getting a kobo aura h2o. The home screen interface on the kobo is better (imo) than the kindle even though the overall feel of the kobo isn't as slick and streamlined. The kobo also seems a little glitchier (though i have read close to 500 hours on it in the almost six months i've had it so i don't exactly go easy on it). Honestly, the kobo reminds me a bit of the sony reader i had, in both the positives and negatives. Both kobo and sony, actually, remind me of android (functional but not exactly aesthetically attractive, customizable enough that you can accidentally break it a lot) whereas the kindle is more of a mac (sleek and pretty in both physical design and interface, works how it works and you better like it because you don't change it). (for reference, i normally lean towards the mac side of the spectrum (i like pretty things and i don't feel like messing with customizations) which is probably why i liked my previous kindle so. ). . Overall, i really like the ease and nice design of the kindle best, but the functionality isn't there for me and how i use it to read. If i only got online store books and love cloud-based storage, i would have loved the kindle. But i get a lot of indie stuff and free fiction from online and i hate the current dependency on the cloud for everything, so i kind of hate the kindle.

I received a voyager as a birthday gift in late february. It accepted set up and downloaded items from my cloud perfectly fine. Then, when i first plugged it in later that eveing, a message came on the screen, stating it needed to update. After the update, it then proceeded to freeze, show error messages, and would not function, despite many resets and turning it on and off. I called the very next morning and spoke to a representatvie about the issue and after attempting to troubleshoot and fix the issues (as i had already done several times), i was informed by the representative that she would be "sending me a replacement kindle via two-day shipping". What she failed to mention was that the replacement kindle was going to be a refurbished voyager! . . When the replacement arrived, it was not in the voyager packaging the original gift arrived in, but rather a generic online store box. When i called online store kindle customer service, it took quite a bit of time to finally get the representative (2nd person i spoke with) to "be honest with me" (his exact wording) and admit that my brand new voyager had been replaced with a refurbished voyager. For a brand new product to be replaced by a refurbished model, with no implicit notification from online store, has accomplished the job of totally destroying my faith in online store and their kindle products! many of us would call this " lying by omission"! . . Had i owned the voyager for several weeks or months, i would completely understand receiving a refurbished replacement. However, to have a brand-new, fresh out of the box, $200 voyager, replaced with a refurbished model, under much less than honest customer service is inexcusable! i have sent both voyagers back (the original gift and refurbished relpacement) and have started looking into e-readers that are not associated with online store or kindle. This is very unfortunate, as i love the kindle reading app on my ipad and phone and am a voracious reader. Had i not questioned the condition of the replacement, online store would have succeeded in duping both me and the people who gave me the voyager as a gift. Epic fail online store!

I had to upgrade from my kindle 2nd gen because i've been reading a lot of technical books with diagrams that were tough to read. The kindle voyage has a 300dpi screen so i can do that easily. The contrast is amazing, and it is much much faster than my old kindle. It still has the push buttons which make it easy to turn pages. This makes reading a seamless experience, which is useful since i am a voracious reader. It has a backlight which makes it useful to read in darker areas, i turn it off most of the time, but it comes in handy if i really have to read in the dark. The backlight is very even and easy on the eyes. I got a omoton kindle voyage smart case cover recommended by wirecutter and it has been a fantastic addition. . The two things i wish kindle fixed were 1. ) the menu- i wish there were a dedicated menu button because it's distracting trying to figure out how to turn on the menu. Also, 2. ) screen savers. I paid $300 for this awesome screen. Please let me change my screen saver to something not boring. . Other than that, i recommend everyone get one, and one for your mom because she'd love it too. . Update: 02/2016. After using for a little less than a year, i'm starting to get dead pixels across the screen. Not just one or two, but an entire line. It's kind of a buzzkill that i spent so much money on this to have a defective screen.

I found it is not as attractive as it lies in bestbuy's display counter. First i agree with most reviewers that the screen color is not even, if you cover the middle part with your hand it becomes clearer that the upper part is yellow and the bottom part is blue, which is acceptable for me, but i think online store should make it better. . Second, i found the press-button totally useless. To turn a page i need to use force to push the bezel, which makes the screen tilt in my hand and most of the time i need to engage my index finger in this process, while is i just touch the right part of the screen it is effortless. Think about why iphone and touch screen phones replaced physical keyboard phones so quickly. . The 300ppi is good but it neither unnoticeable unless you put it with a paperwhite side by side, nor justify the $199 price. . It is lighter 30 gram, which is great, but paperwhite's 210 gram is already good enough for my hand, lighter is a add-up feature but not a deal breaker for me. . I will use it a few days and at least for now i am thinking to return it.

I thought i posted this once but i can't find it so i'll try again. Maybe this one will stay on the site? . . I moved to the voyage from a kindle keyboard that died. The voyage is an excellent e-reader. It is not, however, much better than the paperwhite (which my daughter has) at almost half the price. The page press buttons are nice(would it have been that difficult to add a hard home button? ) but not worth $100, nor the light sensor. . Another problem is you cannot turn it off. You can put it in airplane mode, turn off the screen, but it is still drawing enough power that if you leave it for a few days you should plan on charging it before reading. . When my wife's touch dies (yes we buy a lot of online store products) i'll upgrade her to a paperwhite but the voyage needs some serious upgrades to be worth its current ticket price. . As an update. I'll have to drop a star. 2 years old and it caught a kindle illness, freeze, won't reset, says its charging but its not, hard reset causes screen to close and come back. I've too much invested in kindle books to back out but i'm not sure what to replace it with. I figure the oasis is just a more expensive, probably more fragile voyage and the paperwhite controls are frustrating.

The kindle voyage has been possible the single best purchase i have ever made. In the last year alone i have read tens of thousands of pages and taken this thing with me everywhere. This devoce has single-handedly reignited my passion for reading, the screen is beautiful and the resolution lets me read at the smallest font possible while still having each letter look as crisp as a printed book. I upgraded from a paperwhite and could not be happier with the glass screen and page buttons, and the battery lasts me a month even with the amount i read. The only reason this is not a perfect 5 out of 5 review is that at no more than a week past the year expiration of my warranty the rubberized backing began to fall off. Not scratch away, or peel from a dent or drop, just roll off onto my thumb from the metal plating on the back. I purchased the leather origami case (also highly recommended) and have only taken the kindle out a handful of times in the entire year to charge it or read in bed. I splurged for the best model online store offered because i thought i would be buying an e-reader that would last me a very, very long time so to have it begin to wear when it was handled so very carefully is a bit disappointing. Attached are a few photos of when it started, and it has continued to spread across the back of the kindle.

Not a fan of this version of the kindle. I purchased this from my wife's friend who wasn't using it when my kindle keyboard screen broke. There are some improvements, but generally, i don't like it nearly as much. . Pros:. 1) backlight: obviously it's great to not have to keep a booklight to read in bed at night. 2) goodreads integration: i'm new to goodreads, so i'm pretty excited about being able to use that on my kindle. 3) freely changing dictionaries: i have several different dictionaries that i switch between while reading various series. It's great to not have to exit all the way out to the home screen then go two or three screens into menus to change dictionaries. 4) vocabulary builder: a great idea for those words that you're unfamiliar with. It's great for adults and children both. The only issue with this is also part of the issues as a whole (specially my point 3 below in cons). . Cons:. 1) no text to spech: i really liked being able to listen to a new word to hear how it should be pronounced. I'd love to see that come back in the future. Especially since. 2) no using the device to listen to audio books: i didn't use my keyboard to listen to audiobooks a lot, but it was nice having it there to use if i chose. 3) the touchscreen isn't very good: this my single greatest complaint about the voyage. The screen, while adequate, isn't up to the job of note taking. Frequently, i'll attempt to highlight a line of text and when i release the screen, the highlight will have jumped up or down a line. This is made more irritating when you notice that the "my clippings" item takes each and every change as a new clipping. So at the end of it all, you can have four or five different clips where you just wanted to mark a single passage in a book

My mom's inherited (from me) kindle keyboard finally died, so it was time to do the family kindle shuffle. Mom is now happy to have hubby's kindle paperwhite 1st gen. Hubby now has my kindle paperwhite 2nd gen, and i opted for the kindle voyage, since i liked the thought of having buttons to turn pages. . When the voyage first arrived, i was alarmed by how obvious the screen tint varied from yellow on one end, to a white shade on the other. I googled this common issue, found some things to try, and decided to wait a few days to see if things improved, or if it at least ceased to be a huge distraction. Things did improve, and i am no longer conscious of any variation unless i go hunting for it - which i generally don't bother to do, because it serves no constructive purpose. . While the page press sections come in handy, i usually find myself using them only because my voyage frequently decides to skip extra pages on a frequent basis when i tap or swipe, leaving me struggling to figure out what page i should be on. As you can imagine, it's quite frustrating. . If you already have a kindle and you're happy with it, pass this one by.

When my paperwhite failed, i thought i'd upgrade to the voyage. I love reading in bed, and thought the side clicks would be handy. Sometimes i find it a pain to have to shift hand positions and tap on the screen, especially when i increase the font size for those middle-of-the-night insomnia sessions when it feels like i'm clicking every ten seconds. The side click thingies are not ergonomically designed. They are nowhere close to where i need them. They're placed for people who are using both hands to hold the kindle, and who does that? i generally balance it in one hand, at the lower corner. So with the voyage, i'm using the same screen tap i did with the paperwhite. . Another feature i was expecting to be enough of a benefit to support the extra price was the additional screen lighting and resolution. Neither impressed me. I actually like the paperwhite light better-i find the voyage actually less readable in regular lighting. I don't know if it's because it's a bluer tint? i get the lighting up to 12 or 13, and it's not like a 12 or 13 on the paperwhite, i crank it to 17, it doesn't seem to improve in a way that makes it easier to read. It just looks . . . Bluer. Hard to describe. Anyway. . . If i were to do it again, i'd opt for the paperwhite.

Seriously considering returning this item. I own an ipad mini retina and decided that i needed a kindle voyage to enjoy reading more. After a week with the device, here's the scoop. . Pros. - comfortable to hold. Very light. - convenient buttons. - clean look. - sharp text. I mean sharp (paperwhite looks blurry in comparison). . Cons. - hard to press the buttons when reading in the dark. - sometimes the buttons are not responsive. - slower that that ipad mini retina (slower to highlight and make notes, etc. ). - automatic lighting adjustment is useless (either too dark or too bright). - lighting is uneven! . . So i wanted to like this device really really bad. The problem is i can't find one that works properly. The first voyage i purchased was from best buy. First thing i noticed powering it up was that it had a really bright pixel (as if a tiny hole was poked into the screen). It's not very noticeable unless the screen light is high or the background is black. The second thing that bothered me was how the right button was not as responsive as the left button. Lastly, the screen lighting is uneven, where the top of the device is slightly yellowish/darker than the bottom of the screen which is blueish/brighter; however, the uneven lighting was tolerable on this device. Still, with all the imperfections for a $200+ ereader i called online store and asked for a replacement. . Replacement came in quickly, and i still had my original for comparison. First, i noticed the replacement had no random bright pixels. Good. Second, i noticed that the screen on the replacement was actually brighter than the original at all lighting levels. I thought this was good, but then i saw that the replacement had the same uneven lighting issue as the original but it was worse! the bottom was much bluer and brighter (esp. The bottom left corner). Every time i read on the replacement voyage, my eyes would be bothered; it just wasn't comfortable on my eyes, which was why i decided to go with the voyage for reading as opposed to my ipad mini retina. Someone made an astute observation. If you want to see the ueven lighting cover the middle of the screen with your hand and compare the top and bottom lighting on your voyage (warning: if you are ocd this will bother you). The replacement did have more responsive buttons, however. . Overall, this device had so much potential and i so wanted to love it. Now, i will likely return both the original and replacement voyages and probably just use my ipad mini.

N. Garner, Rotherham says

I just returned a kindle voyage received today, and asked for a replacement, because shockingly it has a very yellow screen, with yellow lighting unevenly spread out over the screen. I compared it with my kindle paperwhite gen 2, which is even more white and sharp screen than the voyage by which is far more expensive (see attached photo! ). . Recently i also ordered a kindle oasis for myself, another one previously ordered for my son as a gift. While the quality of my son's oasis is "luckily" great (very white and sharp screen), the one i received was terribly yellow, with several black dots on the screen. I returned it and reordered again, same problem and actually even worst-the screen very yellow, simply i could not justify such a high price and premium product claim with a sloppy product. Really not sure why voted by "oprah's favourite things" as one of her favourites. Customers must judge by their own eyes and not swayed easily by promotional claim! when you google search more about the overall criticisms of oasis especially, you may have more objective opinion about it, since many including myself experienced the same poor product quality experience. . After returned kindle oasis twice, i tried to order kindle voyage to move to another option, hoping for a better white and sharp screen, if not extremely better than the oasis (by which it claims to be very white and sharp screen), at least it should beat my kindle paperwhite gen 2. Not the case, actually, so i just requested for a replacement. The cs of kindle team assured me that they will send me a truly white and sharp screen one this time. But i don't have high hope for that, since many wrote in the reviews that even replacements got the same problems again. With her amazingly great and kind service, i agreed and hope that they will deliver what they promised because this is the third time i experienced kindle's poor quality problems, both with their 2 top lines. . Now i am really concerned about kindle's quality and start to lose trust and confidence about their qc. How can such a customer-centric company on earth sends sloppy, non-qc products to customers like this, while commanding such high prices. While online store should not spend so much time on just raising kindles' prices to premium levels, they should be more concerned about truly raising quality standards to premium levels to justify the outrageous prices they command. I recently bought kobo aura one too, bigger screen size. Yes, they are not good with their pdf reading and highlighting features, but i must say it is a very good ereader option, apart from kindle. But their ebooks are of less choices and far overpriced than online store's, which are certainly the trade-offs and downsides. But at least, another great choice beyond online store nowadays, since online store focuses more and more on raising prices of their kindles rather than taking good care of their quality like in their past.

The new software update sucks. If i wanted to read on my ipad i would use my ipad. The old text index was perfect and easily allowed you to find your books and pages. It defaulted to this screen and the overall experience was like a table of contents in a book. The new interface looks like an ipad or a kindle fire with ads and images. Please bring back the old screen or allow a setting to default to it rather then force us to use an advertisement. . I gave it 1 star because when i called in the rep said i was stuck with it this way and there was no way to change it. I received an email from online store following up with directions to switch it back. Its not exactly like it was but its better. . The lessons online store needs to learn from this is train your reps better and from all the recent negative feedback on the update, kindle readers don't like gadgets, that's why we read on kindles. Keep it simple.

. Wayt, Washington says

The only reason i'm giving the kindle voyage a 3 star rating instead of a 5 star rating is the screensavers are awful and you can't change them. I spent the extra $20 to get the version without ads and i'm disappointed that the ads are replaced by ugly screensavers that can't be changed or modified. It's either children's blocks or a fountain pen or a generic squiggle or other awful options that show up at random. I'd happily spend $5 on a downloadable collection of screensaver images. Why not give the option to show the front cover of the book you're reading when your kindle is off? other than that annoyance, i love my kindle voyage but every time i pick it up, i'm reminded of my frustration with not being able to modify the screensavers. Please fix this online store. We will pay! please take our money!

I've had almost every kindle made. This is the lightest, sleekest, most beautiful one yet. And i really loved the bezel page turn feature. Unfortunately, my screen was yellow on the top third, then it faded to a beautiful white. I asked for a replacement and they sent one. It was yellow on the top two thirds, and barely made it to white before the bottom of the page. You can see for yourself in the attached picture. . I was also told it was "normal, " and one rep even told me it was a "feature" to reduce eye strain. This is *clearly* a production/quality control issue, and why online store won't just admit it, i'll never know. My husband had to get 3 kindle paperwhites when they first came out to get one that wasn't defective. For $300 (with tax), i just didn't want to go through that with this one. . I'll wait until online store admits they had a manufacturing issue, and that it's been resolved, and then try again. For now, this is truly a two-star review, because three stars means "it's okay, " and it really just isn't.
