Review for security camera keep eye on what

Price was $160.00. The delivery was the best part of the deal. That said, nest is a great idea with a lot of functionality that needs a lot of tuning up for the mass market. The bluetooth configuration is clunky and disobedient. You really have to be right next to it within 10 ft of the camera to configure, so if you're trying to use it as a hidden camera it becomes a little obvious if you have to stand on a ladder with your mobile device to configure it if you change your wireless network. The instructions are anemic and you really have to seem to will it to work navigating the websites faq's. Take a picture of the back of the nest camera so you can configure the device without having to remove it. It is easy to remove off the magnet base. Not easy enough to be moved by the wind, but a snowball or a branch might, so fasten the cable close to the camera base to prevent it from falling too far. It uses tons of bandwidth, so make sure your wireless doesnt have limits. Its about 50 gigs/month. The resolution is pretty good, but not so good that a little compression would degrade the quality. It needs to implement a compression scheme for its cloud recording to storage of the video. Seems like the best part is the design of the cloud part of the interface with the camera more so than on the home camera or delivery to the cloud system. Hopefully this will get more refined as time goes by.

Introduction

So far, this is the best security camera i have used. It is 1080p compared to most security companies 720p cameras. The app works well to notify when the camera spots movement. The picture is bright and crisp in both daylight and at night. Would recommend it to anyone considering a security system. Easy installation. The prices for the plans are also way more reasonable than other security companies. Nest Security Camera, Keep An Eye On What Matters To You, From Anywhere, For Outdoor Use Review (nc2100es)

We already had several nest indoor cameras, and so we decided to buy a couple of the outdoor cameras as well so that we could take full advantage of the night vision. Previously we used a couple indoor cameras and suctioned them to windows to monitor things like our front door, but the downside with that approach is that the night vision has to be disabled otherwise at night all you see is a reflection off the window. By actually using the nest outdoor cameras we are able to use the night vision since the cameras are no longer placed behind windows. The quality is superb just like with all the nest cameras, and the cloud recording is reasonably priced. . The only thing i'm not a huge fan of is the power cord. We essentially had to punch holes from the outside wall to an inside wall, and then plug them into an outlet inside. From what i've read these power cords are not rated for installation in attics or anything, and so passing them through a wall is really one of the few options. That did work out well though in the end, and we filled the holes with "great stuff" gap filler. The holes needed to pass the cord through was much larger than i would have liked them to be, but using the gap filler helped make sure we didn't leave a hole for weather/insects to get through into our house. There may be better solutions for that, but it was the easiest we could find. -P. Lara

PROS
  • I purchased this to thwart package thieves and because i am a bit paranoid. So far i am pretty impressed with the my purchase. The video quality is great and the connection is reliable. . First, installation was pretty simple, though i wasn't thrilled with puncturing my exterior. I decided to mount this on the aluminum flashing that surrounds my front door, rather than drilling through the vinyl siding. Once i decided on location and got over having to drill into my house, installation was pretty simple. . I will echo other reviewers and state that the included cord is way too long if your outlet is near your camera. Following the lead of others, i did not connect the included ac adapter and instead plugged the usb end into an extra iphone adapter i had laying around and it works just fine. This allowed me to reduce my slack from like 10 feet down to a foot. . I use the nest app on my iphone 7 plus running ios 10. I do have two nest protect sensors, but not the thermostat. While the nest app works pretty well, there are a few bugs that still need to be worked out. My biggest annoyances are 1) only about 85% of the notifications include the gif and i still get quite a few that include no preview and 2) there are times where the app just won't load the video when i click on a notification and i have to force quit and restart the app and then manually find that point in time. . Outside of these bugs, there are some usability annoyances. It would be nice if you could just arrow between events in the app. You can try clicking the little colored dots, but my experience is not consistent. Therefore, jumping from event to event is a bit of a pain. Also, it is annoying that the software cannot distinguish lights from people/animals/cars/etc. I often get notifications about activity only to have it be headlights that shine in the zone. Since my home is located at a "t" intersection, it is unfortunately very common to have headlights in my walkway. . The nest aware subscription is a bit expensive, but there are not many competitors out there, so it is what it is. Also, there hasn't been a firmware update in over a year (jan 2016), which is a bit concerning. The picture quality is great, so no issues there. I would love to add more of these around my home, but given the cost of the camera and the subscription service, i don't think i will until things come down in price some.
  • I was in the market for an outdoor security camera and debated between the nest outdoor camera and the canary flex. I decided to go with the nest being that it had better and more reviews than the canary. I received the camera on a friday afternoon and installed it the following morning about 10:30am. Within 24 hours we captured video of a man searching our vehicles. The vehicles were locked and nothing valuable was in them. The suspect came sunday morning at 5:45am. The nest app sent me the notification stating that it detected activity, but i never heard my phone. When i woke up, i sent the video and a still shot of the suspect to my neighbor who happens to be captain of our local police department. It's now wednesday and they already have him identified. I was kind of hesitant about spending $180 for a camera, but it has already paid for itself. Overall, this is a great product and i have already recommended it to many locals in our neighborhood. I'm already trying to decide where i want to install my next camera.
CONS
  • This camera has a temperature range of -4 to 104f. Temperatures in my area regularly go up to 120f so i'm very concerned about this. Setup is a mess. The iphone setup did not initially work. It had trouble recognizing the qr code and the bluetooth device never showed up to enable pairing. Tried the pc setup and that didn't work either, when connected to the pc over usb it did the normal windows thing asking me to set it up as a mass storage device but i was expecting it to ask for drivers or have some type of setup program included with the cam. Tried the installation a third time using the iphone again and selected the manual method using the 6 digit code on the back of the cam. After a few minutes it connected and is working now. Video is very good. I previously had a nest thermostat and loved it (was destroyed in a house fire) but i'm not impressed with this cam. For the money i expected a much easier setup and something much more durable (with temperature).
  • Easy and convenient. I like the magnetic mount - but it has its limitations, like the angles and the cord handing down is kinda annoying. But the nest subscription cost is absurdly high compared to similar cameras and services. Will keep playing with this new 'toy' for a few weeks longer. We haven't quite decided if it's worth keeping or not. The picture quality is modest (with the hq video setting enabled). But this is my first security cam, so i don't have anything to directly compare it to yet. But i'd say you'd be lucky to get a clear image of a person's face past 20ft.
  • Likely the best system on the market if you're willing to pay $100/yr for nestaware. The cost is understandable for the 10 days of continuous 1080p cloud storage, however, the other key features which make this system stand out from the others (person detection, zone detection), also require nestaware. One would expect that if you're paying a higher price for a better product, these two software upgrades should be included in the price and not require yearly fees.

had a christmas package stolen form my driveway, because of the camera we were able to identify the license plate and the thief which ultimately resulted in his arrest. My package was recovered. I posted the video on social media and people were amazed at the quality.

Click to see NoticeNest Security Matters Anywhere Outdoor (nc2100es)"I absolutely love what nest is doing in the marketplace. Their products are innovative, stylish, easy to use, and best of all. They work the way they should! this camera is no exception. Install took me a bit, but that was just due to me taking my time to run the wires are cleanly as possible. Once installed, setup was a breeze with the nest app on my smartphone. The customizing options are plentiful, but not overwhelming or unnecessary. I like how you can choose what definition you want the video recorded at. So for folks who have a slower internet service plan -or- are limited by data caps, you can lower the recording resolution to save on data usage. In my case - the full hd 1080p recording is perfect. I was able to easily setup digital zones within the camera's view to stop getting annoying alerts when a car drives by, but still get alerts when someone actually enters my property line. Nest aware subscription is kind of expensive when compared to the competition, but the competition doesn't offer as good of a camera in my opinion. So it's a trade off. But for me - $150/yr for 10-days of recording history for both my cameras is worth it. And far cheaper than a standalone security system from any of the major security companies. . One tip for anyone installing the cameras: even though they are fully weatherproof, i personally recommend installing them underneath an eve of the home (meaning - not just out in open airspace). This will prevent them from getting too cold in the winter with all the falling cold/moist air, and too hot in the summer getting beat on by the sun (the directions actually say not to let them get basked in sunlight)."

(0) Question: Anyone put this through the ringer in peak arizona summer yet? i'd like to pick up a few but they're rated for 104 which is a frigid az summer.

(1) Question: Can you view the nest cam on your kindle

(2) Question: Is it me or does this look waaaaay too easy to defeat or steal?

Outlet Degree Swivel Dropcam Wasserstein (drpnestwtacmnt) FAQ.

Really awesome product that cuts down on unnecessary wiring, especially if you're looking to have a camera at floor level. We use ours to figure out which one of the dogs has destroyed the latest item we come home to find on the floor. I only have two areas that i think could benefit from improvement:. . 1. Add tilt: the frame that holds the camera swivels, but it doesn't tilt. This would be a great feature to incorporate. 2. Add stability: the camera itself is pretty heavy, so when i plug the mount into the outlet, it has a tendency to lean a tiny bit forward. I think this might be because the casing for the frame is a little longer than the plug itself and is keeping the plug from sitting flush against the outlet. I'm going to be replacing this outlet soon anyway, so i'll see if a newer unit helps with this teensy, tiny, basically imperceptible issue that my ocd just can't seem to let go. -Notice from B. The nest ac outlet mount is outstanding and i have purchased to of them as they are inconspicuous, but provide the needed surveillance. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting to hide the unsightly wires and large outlet plug that comes with the nest camera.

- . BarbaraPlugs directly into the wall, meaning those long cables can be cast aside but the camera can still do its job

This camera mount is a great idea. It not only supports the camera and allows different angles, it does so in a very obscure manner. The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars is because i wanted white (it's shown in white and black) but couldn't order or find any. If you advertise something it should be available for sale. If you want a black one then consider my review as 5 stars. (almost looks like a night light)

Arlo Pro NETGEAR Security System Siren 1 Rechargeable Wire-Free HD Camera Audio, Indoor/Outdoor, Night Vision VMS4130

I am giving arlo 4 and a half stars due to having issues with an older base station (non pro) and issues with one older camera. The base station works intermittently even after following all of tech supports list multiple times. The image on the one camera is often "green" even after multiple restarts, moving location, etc. Upside: this system is easier than most to set up and use. Being able to customize motion sensitivity and recording time is a definite plus. The truly wireless feature means you can put the cameras where installing power would be cost prohibitive. (spring for the battery chargers/batteries of the older unit and the pro). The pro system is an excellent way to monitor my parents (mid 80 years old and living an hour and a half from me) from my desk top or the ap on my phone. Image and sound quality are excellent. An arlo anywhere will be next on my list for travel. It is important to customize your recording and motion sensitivity settings. If you are having wireless issues, check the assigned channels and move the cameras further apart. I have three base stations (for the best coverage if you have a large area you may need more than one base) and 11 cameras. Some of the negative reviews i have read would be solved by folks just reading the manual.

Arlo pro is a 100% wire-free indoor/outdoor security camera with rechargeable batteries and audio and can be added to any arlo base station system. Arlo pro includes rechargeable batteries, motion and sound-activated alerts, 2-way audio, a 100+ decibel siren, and 7 days of free cloud hd video recordings. Arlo covers every angle to help keep you safe and protected. Note: place the camera within the wifi's range for the device to work effectively.

Arlo Netgear Security System Siren (vms4130 100nas) FAQ.

After doing a substantial amount of research, i decided to go with the arlo as it had the features i wanted and i've had good experience with other netgear products. There are several other wireless devices that transmit wireless; however, most still require a physical a/c connection nearby. The players in full wireless (record/transmit and power) is very limited. For me, the arlo stood out because i could attach my own storage to the device where the others required a subscription to a cloud service to store data. (the arlo also offers a cloud service, but it is not required). . Even with the options i was looking for, i was still a little hesitant as the arlo is at the top of the list is cost, but after running it for three weeks, i am pleased with the results thus far. The connection is stable with cameras being 50 to 110 feet from the base going through walls. The battery life indicator has hardly moved and i have an active house averaging around 40 to 60 clips per day on both cameras. The picture is very clear in both day and night settings. The phone app is very flexible allowing for full control of cameras and video playback as is the browser based site. . Overall, i am extremely pleased with the purchase and would not let a slightly higher cost steer you away. Solid product. -Notice from B. Angelica, Newcastle upon Tyne

I'm am 90% satisfied with the camera system. Set up was extremely easy and the cameras work great. Two negatives are: there is a 4 sec delay whole streaming camera feed and the quality is not hd at all. You couldn't tell what a face looked like. The app is a little slower than it should be when connecting to cameras. It is very minimal though. I would like the ability to deferentiate between a car an human too. This is being picky though. Im tired of motion alerts when a car drives by. Turning down the sensitivity helps with that though.

- C. CortneyThe hardware is great. The cameras have a wide field of view, high resolution and the microphones pick up sounds without being overly noisy. However, the android app is mediocre. It frequently reports not having an internet connection while simultaneously showing updates from the cameras, the geofencing status flips back and forth while i'm stationary in the same room of my house, the list of modes will lose modes for a moment, and setting a mode will fail at times for no reason. Hopefully netgear can get that app fixed, because the system would otherwise get a 5 star rating.

Update 9/27/17: i just charged the cameras for the first time after being up for almost six months, so battery life is good. Second, i finally solved all the geofencing issues by going to a 3rd party app. The "geofencing needs an internet connection" error message from arlo was unbearable, as was the inability to have the cameras scheduled to be armed while we sleep at night and armed with geofencing during the day. Luckily, arlo pro works with stringify so i have "outsourced" all scheduling and geofencing duties to the stringify app. For those that have problems with geofencing as i did, i highly recommend this as a much more effective solution than what works in the arlo app. Of course, one would wonder if it is worth it to buy such an expensive camera system and have to incorporate another 3rd party app to get it to work as advertised. . Original review: the cameras are great. Easy to install, great battery life (still 75% after a month) and pretty good quality video. This was a much better solution for me than having to hard wire everything. There are two cons to arlo, however. The first is the price to add on additional cameras. I bought the 3 camera set but realized after installation i'd have better coverage with 5. But it is ridiculously expensive to buy single cameras. The second con is the app. It is very buggy. First i get a notification pretty much every day that arlo has no internet, and that notification can not be turned off or dismissed. The only way i can get rid of it is by going i to settings and disabling all notifications and then turn back on. Very annoying. The app is also very buggy on opening. If i get a motion detection notification and i click it, it takes a long time for the app to open. Flashing black and white screen while it loads and many times i have to close and reopen it before i get it to work. This could be a problem if you are planning to use the voice feature to talk to someone at the door. Geofencing also needs work. One issue is that they say you always have to have the app open on your phone for it to work. I don't understand why it can't just be always on in the background. Second is that it doesn't work reliably with two devices. If one of us is home and the other is not, more than often the geofencing is armed and i get video of my wife pulling into the driveway or opening the back door. . Hopefully they will fix the app issues over time, but if you can get past the minor annoyances then this is a good security solution.

Nest Security Camera, Keep An Eye On What Matters to You, From Anywhere, For Indoor Use

Finally a product for which a person can open a package and be amazed. Seems to have quality build. App has work 99% flawlessly. It took 30 seconds to link can to app. Another 2min to mount to wall. Cam comes with peg out the bottom which is screwed into a flat circular base stand. There is a circular wall mount which attaches with three provided screws. Secure said mount to wall and simply place flat base stand on/against wall mount and it will hold there because they are magnetic. Super easy and mobile. Just remember that you need a power outlet(110) within about 25ft unless you run an extension cord, to power the cam. Clear image, easy to run app, night vision could see a little more reach but overall not bad. These cams seem to have been very well thought out and developed. Would definitely recommend buy them, plus once you scan the qr code on the back of the cam to link it to your app and your wireless internet you get a free trial month of nest aware. I have no negatives at this point other than reach of night vision and that's not really bad. Will update.

Home security has never looked so good. The nest cam indoor is the perfect addition to any home. The nest cam indoor is beautifully designed and it plugs into power, so you never have to worry about dead batteries. With motion and activity alerts, the nest cam helps you stay informed about what's happening even if you aren't home. You'll get a notification when the kids come back from school, when the dog decides to eat those new pillows you bought, or when someone enters your home who shouldn't. Nest cam indoor also features a built-in speaker and microphone allowing you to listen in and speak to whoever is there. Nest is focused on making simple, human, delightful things. That s how we re creating the thoughtful home: a home that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it.

Nest Security Camera, Keep Eye On What Matters To You, Anywhere, Indoor Use (nc1102es) FAQ.

This review is in comparison to the sri camera, arlo camera, and the online store cloud camera, also we use this as a baby monitor. I liked the sri camera, which we had initially. It stopped working though. I'm sure from being dropped on the floor and not taking better care of it with little children around. We tried the online store cloud cam, which had the best picture quality and sound sensitivity of all four cameras, however it disconnected too often. We just got the nest cam and have had no issues with connectivity, which is why i'm giving it 4 stars. The picture quality and sound sensitivity are similar to the sri camera which is good, just not as amazing as the online store cloud cam, hence 4 instead of 5 stars. This nest cam also has a lot of neat features on it's app(my husband tells me), which also makes it 4 star noteworthy. Overall, the nest cam is a great camera. I realize i didn't mention arlo. The arlo camera would sometimes emit a bright light which i thought was waking my baby and we started having connectivity issues with it. Picture quality was good on the arlo, the same or a tad better than sri and nest. -Notice from . Janice, Oklahoma

Edit to add: there is a new "outdoor" model being released in september. If you are like me and are planning to use some of these outside it may be worth waiting for the new model. To use this model outside you will have to put it in a weatherproof enclosure which may reduce night vision or sound quality. . These things are delightfully simple to setup, and offer a good option for home monitoring to those of us who don't want to configure a router or run cables all over a house. There are trade offs to this simple solution however. A lot of them. First, if you have more than one or two, expect that video quality may intermittently degrade due to wifi/internet bandwidth issues. We use these in two homes, one home uses one and the other uses seven. The home with one is much more reliable and more often has good clear video. The home with seven has frequent episodes where video will pixelate and is prone to have cameras off line. Another trade off is that these things are expensive relative to standard home security type cameras. While i am really grateful that these cameras allow us to easily monitor a house 3000 miles away, it can also be an exercise in frustration. The software often hangs (you will get very used to swing a blue circle spinning in your screen) and requires a desktop computer and a paid subscription to use all features. Speaking of which, if you want to record any video wou will have to pay a subscription for each camera (discounted rates for each camera on the same plan after the first). Overall the cameras do work well, there is a 2-3 second lag but the quality is good. Audio works but two way conversation is clunky due to the lag. For me, this is an amazing product because it functions well enough and was easy enough that i could install 7 cameras in a day and a half (we installed many in outdoor/difficult to reach areas using weather proof enclosures which work great but added difficulty to the setup). Remember these are not totally wireless, you still need to provide power.

- Y. Meyer-update-. I wanted to take a moment and make an update to my original review i gave this product. The original review was made prior to the new app update, which really does an amazing job in increasing overall functionality of the camera as a whole. As you can see in my original review of the product, i was not happy with using the camera as a baby monitor. The previous version didn't make it conducive to having it in a baby's room due to limited notifications. That has sense been changed. Now, the camera will give us alerts whenever our child moves around. Very nice. I'd also mention that i really appreciate that nest took the time to update a previous gen product. All-to-often companies will leave an older product to focus on making it appealing to purchase new products. Not so with nest and i'm glad i made the decision to go with them. . While many of the issues i had with the camera have been fixed, the grainy picture is still an issue. Perhaps i need a degree in network engineering to really get the best picture. It's good, but it just doesn't have a crisp clear picture. But, for what it is, it's more than enough. . I can't say enough good things about the new app. The feature to scrub through a timeline to quickly see activities is perfect. There's no load time / buffering when going back, i don't know how the engineers at nest were able to do this, but their video compression algorithm is really top notch. Maybe they're using the middle out compression. Regardless. A tip of the hat to them. . I'm planning on buying the new outdoor camera soon and possibly another indoor camera. I've also updated my previous review from a 4 star to a 5 star. Well worth the investment. By updating the app they have given new life to this product! . . -original review-. . While the nest cam is "cool" and works as it should, i simply can't give it 5 stars. . We invested entirely into the nest ecosystem. We purchased 2 thermostats, the smoke alarms and the nest cam. . Like other nest products it's a design gem! small, attractive and website and app are very well designed and work great! it's ease of use and functionality are the few shining stars in this product. Through the app, setup was done very quickly, and it starts working fast as well. . The picture quality is ok, not amazing by any means (not sure how they call it 1080). It is somewhat grainy, the night vision works great, but the overall picture is just grainy. Also, you can't really keep it in 1080 or it'll freeze. . The "alert" system is oddly conceived. You only get alerts every 30 minutes. So, since we use the unit as a baby monitor, we have to constantly keep an eye on it. It won't alert you again until you enter into a new 30 minute window. . Remotely viewing the camera (which technically is the only way) works okay as well. Sometimes it freezes and you have to reset the app and start over. But i've never just not been able to join it. Although sometimes it seems like it takes a while, but i'll chalk that up to a bad network connection. . The dvr function or cloud storage is great. The monthly fee is a bummer but it's a good service and worth it. . Overall i give it 4 stars. It's pricy for what it is, but it's still cool. . If you are looking for this as your baby monitor i suggest you keep looking, until they update the app to be a better baby monitor. . Baby monitor: 3 out of 5. Security camera: 5 out of 5

Will agree the older generation of these was pretty poor, but we just received an updated version (03/2017) and it's night and day different. Different as in better! nest has stumbled a lot with various products and releases, but it appears they may finally be getting their footing. The new version seems much better, the app less buggy and overall a much better product. Our initial purchased 2. 5 years ago of this product was a 1 star, but we've upgraded it to 4 stars now that the app is better and the hardware seems better.

The F.A.Q. for nest security camera, keep an eye on what matters to you, from anywhere, for outdoor use

Update: 9/8/17. I figured i'd give a quick update now that i've had the cameras for about a year and they've been through summer and winter. I've been very pleased with the cameras - in fact, we added more and are now up to 5 of them installed on our property. The video quality has been exceptional - both day and night - even in below freezing and 100+ degree temperatures. We've had occasional situations where a camera has gone offline, but i attribute that to a flaky wifi signal and not necessarily the camera. . Regarding the nest video recording service, we pay the monthly fee for all of our cameras. The cameras are a key part of our home security, and i view the cost of recording as no different than paying for a security monitoring service. I guess it really depends on what you intend to use the cameras for, but for me it is worth it to be able to review past events and set up custom activity zones and notifications. I agree that it would be nice if nest would offer additional options regarding length of storage (currently limited to 10-day or 30-day options). I seldom need to review anything other than same or prior day. . Original review:. I'm a longtime user of dropcam and nest products having owned several indoor cameras, 2 different generations of thermostats, and smoke detectors. I've been waiting for years for nest to announce an outdoor camera, and eagerly snapped up several of them when they were announced. I just got around to installing the first yesterday, above my front door. . The camera itself is very solid and seems durable for the outdoors. The attached cable is about 10 feet long and ends in a usb male connector which attaches to a female usb port on a second length of cord - amounting to 25 feet of cord total. The box also includes all the clips, wall anchors, screws you'll need for most installations. . In the simplest of installations, you'd mount your camera in the desired location and then run the cord to an outdoor power outlet, securing the cord along the way with the included clips. In other instances, a hole might be drilled through the exterior wall or into attic space (7/8" is required to pass the connector through) and the cord connected to a power source inside, thereby hiding most or all of it. . In my situation, our home was built with cat5e wiring to various exterior points specifically for connecting security cameras. I wanted to use this wiring so i was able to use a power over ethernet (poe) splitter and injector (bought on online store) to run power to the camera and then connected the splitter to the camera's power cable using a usb adapter. It worked flawlessly. Including a link to the adapter.  ws-poe-usb-kit for ipad or tablet, remote usb charger via poe ethernet cable up to 328 feet with 5 volts 10 watts and female usb. . My biggest gripe about my installation is the length of cable that i needed to conceal. Because the cable is permanently attached to the camera itself (which isn't inherently a bad thing, and probably has to do with waterproofing), installations like mine which don't require the cable to span a long distance to connect to power end up with a long mess of extra cord. . I ended up buying a weatherproof electrical box at the local home improvement store, mounting it near the camera, and tucking the cables inside (see picture). It looks clean, but it would have been nice to not have to take that extra step. I'll probably paint the box eventually to better match the brick color. For my other installs i plan to route the cable through attic space which will fully conceal it. It would be nice if nest offered a shorter or alternative cord option, but i made it work. . Aside from the physical installation, nest makes it simple to connect and configure the camera to your home wifi. Download the nest app, select the option to add a new device, and scan the qr code on the camera. The only remaining step is to enter your wifi password, and everything connects automatically. Using the app you can view your camera's live feed, view past motion events (still images if you don't subscribe to the nest aware service to record your video), configure settings like night vision, sound, etc. , as well as turn the camera off and on (if you ever need to). . Overall, i'm very happy with the camera. The image quality is great - full 1080p hd. I appreciate the option to receive motion and/or sound alerts, which i can customize with zones to minimize "false alarms" from passing cars, etc. There is also a built in speaker and microphone, so you can talk through the camera to "visitors" - invited or otherwise. . I've tried other camera options - ones with a dvr, arlo (feared the batteries dying and hated the motion activated recording). Nest wins hands down!

I purchased the nest cam for a couple of reasons. I like the size factor. It is small and discreet. I also have several other nest products with i have been very happy with so far. . The 130 degree viewing angle allows me to capture the entire yard where the camera is set up. I also like the hd image. It makes it easy to identify people/cars, etc. Having a microphone allows me to talk with people in the yard from inside, such as when my kids are playing outside, i can watch them through the app, and call them to come in when it is time. . Setup took about 30-45 minutes, simply because i had to mount the camera, then go inside and run the cable, and then come back out and adjust the camera, etc. Very easy to do. The magnet mounting setup is nice as it is easy to put up, and allows for a full adjustment of the camera to any angle. It is also strong enough to hold the camera in place. I have not noticed any movement at all from wind, weather or anything else. . Connecting to the app was extremely quick. Clicked on add product, and it found it right away. The app even tells you to plug it in inside to connect it, and then take it outside to check your wifi signal and see if it will continue to work at your desired location. . The only negatives i have are that the attached power cable has a usb end, with a large locking collar around it. I had to drill a 3/4" hole in the side of the house to be able to thread the cable inside to the outlet. I filled the hole with foam to seal it up, but i wish the cable would detach from the camera, or that it me a smaller style to not require such a large hole. . I also wish there were other color options, as they now have for the nest thermostat. While the white is nice looking, it stands out a little bit on my brown colored home. A bronze or black color would have blended in better for me. . Those two things are fairly picky, but otherwise i have been very satisfied.

Best nest security matters anywhere outdoor (nc2100es) in review

This is probably one of the best home security cameras available. When it comes to ease of use and setting it up, it must be the best. Two things i'd point out to improve on is the image resolution resolution and the fact that the wifi module is in the camera and not in the power adapter. More resolution would make it possible to recognize faces and license plates. The wifi module moved from the camera itself to the power adapter would almost always bring the wifi module closer to the wifi router, eliminating the need for a wifi extender, when the camera is too far from the router or on the outside of a garage door being shielded from the wifi signal from the router.

I pre-ordered this as soon as i heard it was coming out. We have two nest 2nd gen thermostats and three 1st gen wired nest protects and i love them. I personally had a bad experience with the 1st nest cam, but really wanted to give this a 2nd chance. . I was hoping that the power cord would be connected through a micro usb port that i could switch out the cord for a ring stickup cam solar panel that i have, but alas, no luck. This thing is really meant to be plugged in at all times. I'm guessing that is because of the constant recording which caused my first nest cam to feel so hot i was afraid it was malfunctioning. Hopefully we won't have this issue with the outdoor cam. Here are my thoughts so far. I'll update if anything interesting to share comes up. . The good:. - the camera is rather large compared to the nest cam and seems watertight enough to not have issues being plugged up outside in an uncovered driveway. - the night vision is really nice, and far superior to what i have with my ring stickup cam. Like there isn't even a comparison. - the notifications are almost instantaneous. Of course i'm at home with everything all on the same wi-fi, but still impressive. - there are no delays in live streaming. This is especially impressive considering my canary (which i love by the way) has a 10 second delay. - setup was incredibly easy. I scanned the qr code added the wi-fi and password and we were ready to go. It took less than 5 min to get going! . - my husband and i tested two-way audio and it works really well. The sound is clear at close range and if you shout you can hear it from the ground. Right now it's about 10 feet off of the ground. - also, the landscapers were here working outside today and set the motion sensors off but the trees swaying in the wind have not caused the sensors to activate. . The not so good:. - i'm still annoyed at the cost of the monthly/yearly subscription fees. - i'm not electrician by any stretch of the imagination, so someone please let me know if i'm overthinking it, but the plug is not grounded and that bothers me for being outside. . The other:. - the packaging is nice and standard nest. I'm a sucker for good packaging. - there is hardware included to mount this indoors or outdoors. It comes with 12 screws for some reason which is way more than you need to install. . I've included a bunch of pictures, but so far i'm really happy with the picture quality and performance. Time will tell though how things go!

Pros: . - weatherproof is right on point as it works flawlessly even after they have gone through numerous winter storms. - the two-way audio communication quality is clear and loud from at least 15 feet away from the camera. (decent speakers and the microphone are clear on the other side of the conversation). - motion and audio sensor detections are customizable (mainly the motion settings) as you can have the option to begin recording when one of these modes are triggered in a special zone. - i live on a busy street and the motion detection is one of the best out there for people like me. The reason why is because not only you can customize the zones where you want the motion sensors to be on, but it will take in cars, weather, and a person s distances into consideration before alerting you. - false alerts are little to none as you can customize the alerts you want. Of course when squirrels come into play expect an email about them. - email alerts are exactly up to date when your camera detects something out of the ordinary. There is no time lag on email alerts, which i love about this camera. - i can connect my tablet and iphone on the app and view my cameras at the same time without waiting to log off one device (multiple share options). - 1080p night vision, enough said as it s smooth, clear, and detailed. - the power cord that comes with it is pretty dam long as you can put this camera in a decent place without worrying of power cord distances. - 130-degree view as, what i did, you can put one in the front and one in the back to give a giant viewing of your house surroundings. - wireless and bluetooth connectivity is built-in and fast. Also, both provide low energy consumption. - 24/7 live video, what else can you ask for. - nest aware subscription is a must because you can view your stored recordings anywhere in the world without having to be at home. - the subscription is also great to have because of its persona alert settings where it will notify you when someone is coming near the camera or is in the frame (you can customize the setting and notifications as well). - not that hard to install, relatively easy. - mobile app and web portal are easy to walk through and are not complex to navigate to your live camera viewing or your past recordings. - the speaker and microphone are built in front of the camera. Good design. - under the cloud plan, you can view any recording. When they mean 24/7 they mean 24/7 of recordings. - the mobile alert option is my prefer option as it ll pop right on my phone to let me know what s going on. - have to leave your house in a hurry, the beauty of this camera is that it ll recognize when you re leaving and will turn on the begin recording (those who want to conserve power this will be a great option for you) but keep in mind you need to have the app for this to work. - can also set different times of the day or in the week to turn or off your cameras. I find this useful as i don t really need to turn on my cameras if i m staying at home all day. - no delay in live streaming. Tested this out by logging onto my iphone and watching my live view while facing the camera. No delay at all. . Cons and oks: . - after the free subscription trial you lose a hell of a lot of great features in the pros list. - non-subscribers: you re going to get access only snapshots that are triggered by sound and motion sensors. No more 24/7 recordings but instead you have a three-hour history of snapshots. - you need a good internet connection as, depending on your provider and router, the image quality will decrease from 1080-720-360. - installing it outside will require you to buy an outdoor power box unless you re creative on fixing this issue. - non-subscribers: no more custom motion and sound detection zones. - the farther you install it away from your house the weaker the wi-fi connectivity you re going to get with the camera. - make sure that you don t have a light facing directly at the camera as i discovered that the sensors within the camera can mistake nighttime as daytime. The outcome will not enable its night vision. - no memory card slot. If your power goes out or you don t have enough cloud storage, you re screwed. - non-subscribers: will lose person alerts as well as the option to share clips that you had stored in the past. - it s built in magnetic installation process makes it super easy to steal. - power cord doesn t look pretty; i wish it had the option to function with batteries. . Bottom line: . . You re facing a double edge sword. If you get this camera and will pay for the subscription you re going to get one of the best cameras out on the market right now. 24/7 no lag security cameras are nowhere in this market and you can customize almost anything you want regarding what the camera alerts you with. But a majority of these great features are only available with a subscription and cloud storage. . If you get this camera and will not pay for the subscription you re getting only half of what you paid for. A majority of the features will not be open to you as your camera will only produce snap pictures instead of 24/7 video recording. It ll be a heavy blow as when you buy a camera this high in price you expect to experience what you paid for (i m talking to you star wars battlefront ). . Overall i don t like that i have to continue to pay more for a high price security camera in order to fully experience it. I also wish that it had a battery and memory card option where if the power goes out my cameras will still record. In other words, it doesn t have a backup power saver. But i will say the subscription experience is indeed incredible to have as no stone will be left unturned. If you re tight on money i recommend that you only buy a month pass of the subscription (i don t know if they have a week pass) before your vacation, or be sure to pay yearly to experience it fully. Verdict: it s a great camera set but depending on your income you may be facing a double edge sword. . Hopefully i was a help to you. Love, . Honest reviewer

. Valdez, Wiltshire says

Be forewarned: you really need to pay for the nest aware plan to make this the best camera available. Without it, you won't get zone alerts or video alert playback. Just snapshots of everything in frame for the last 3 hours- which works well, but not worth the price of the camera outright. I purchased a full year for $100, which is basically 12 months for the price of 11. Yes, i do think it should be 1/2 that or they should offer 3 days or even 24 hours footage options, but i digress. I'm sure they'll start to offer a variation of plans eventually, given all the feedback i've seen from customers. . Here's why i think it's worth it:. Nest has the absolute best app of any camera i've used. It's incredibly simple and fun to use the video timeline to go through captured footage. Even my wife enjoys scrubbing through the video feed. She never before bothered to check the camera feed of our past cameras i had installed (foscam, blink & laview to name a few). . Being able to set the camera's to automatically arm themselves when we're gone is incredible simple and totally hands-off. We only get notifications on our phones of zone activity if we are both out of the house. It's quick, seamless and it just works. . Yes, you can buy a costco 8 camera dvr system for cheap, but you get what you pay for in software (or lack therof). And let's not discount the fact that you're then trusting some generally untrustworthy 3rd party to access your home network for remote viewing. I don't like opening ports on my router, and i fully trust nest with their cloud service. I definitely do not trust foscam, etc. . My criticisms:. Ir could be a bit stronger. Power cord is ok, but poe would have been great. An option for ethernet vs wifi would have been nice. Wifi reception is decent, but being that these are outside cameras the wifi signal can get weak after getting through all those walls. Nest aware needs to come down in price a bit.

W. Williams, South Dakota

This is very easy to set up, and very easy to install. The field of vision is great. The resolution is fairly good. I've tried to zoom into my own car's license plates from about 50 feet. It's all a blur. I was hoping to capture license plate numbers if somebody pulled into my driveway with bad intentions when i looked at archives. I did purchase the 30 day archiving option which also includes the ability to set up 4 different monitoring zones. So far, my largest misgiving is that the unit will occasionally go off-line. I have an extremely strong signal (-45 dbm) as my router is just feet away inside. I've had it go off-line while i am using my desktop computer, so i know that my wi-fi was up. The weird part is that it tends to go off-line when something large moves into range. Like a ups or fedex truck delivering to me. I did contact support. All i got was try to reset it, move it, etc. Waste of time.

I ve owned nest and previously dropcam since they came to market. I watched google stumble badly while it tried to make the camera company part of its home automation project, google home. I ve also watched many companies including anker struggle to match the quality of the cameras while elbowing in this crowded market. Netgear s arlo, blink (soon online store blink), and a hundred other companies are out there trying to carve out a place for themselves as homes shift to using smart devices. . I ve stuck by nest because they ve been generally reliable and willing to replace defective products. Their app is easily the most user friendly on the market and informs the user when the camera feed can and does go down for no apparent reason. . Installing nest outdoor was very easy. The hardest part was deciding where to put your device. Your decision will be limited in part by access to an outdoor power socket. Also, you will need to decide where it s aesthetically ok to place a camera. Work this out ahead of time to save yourself the grief of having a shiny new camera and no good place to situate it. . Overall the installation process was simple. My only criticism/complaint is the stingy quantity of screws and fastener clips provided. There should be, in the immortal words of zoolander, at least 3 times more of them.

Like many of you online storeians out there, i researched many different cameras out there before choosing to buy this one. To be clear, i really wanted a camera for live monitoring purposes (think baby monitor) rather than strictly recording/security purposes, so that did play into my decision for the nest cam outdoor camera. We wanted to be able to monitor our young kids while they are playing in an area in the back yard that we could not see from the house. That being said, i am very happy with the nest cam. It hits all the items i really wanted in a monitoring system. So, here are some of the pros/cons. . Pros:. -extremely easy set-up. Seriously. I am pretty technically savvy, but i think a 5th grader could have set this thing to connect to your wifi/phone. Well done nest. -the magnetic base allows for super-simple 360-degree adjustments at any time. -mic: we are able to hear our kids playing and even if not watching the screen, are prompted to respond by just the sound of cries. This pics up pretty well from a long distance. -video quality: the day-time clarity/color is really impressive and the night-time infrared is really clear as well. -app: so far the app is extremely easy to use, very intuitive. (caveat: see con below about "nest aware"). -durability: this think looks and feels very solid. It does not feel flimsy/fragile. It rained the whole day i first had this up and the camera had no problems at all. . Cons:. -color: i know this is probably superficial, but i would think that a darker color camera would blend into more environments than a stark white one. I know some people want the cameras to be highly visible to serve as a deterrent, but when said camera cots almost $200 and can just be pulled off its magnetic base, i would rather people not be able to see it from down the street. Now, i understand, some people might have a white house that this would match, but i think having another color option (black) would be nice so we can choose. I put mine in a tree and having a bright white chord winding down the tree looked absolutely terrible (so i had to buy some black flex to lay the cord in). -nest aware: the monthly fee for the cloud storage is higher than any other camera i looked at. In my opinion, it is ridiculous. Even if you only want 10 days, paying $10/$5 a month per camera is really high. Especially after you just paid $200 for each camera. Since i am only planning on using this for monitoring (not paying that monthly fee), i went ahead and bought it for all the other benefits. I think they should give us an option to save footage on our own hard drive/dvr, but of course, then they wouldn't get all that money. If nothing else, they should allow a 24hr option for a lot cheaper. Most of are going to know within 24 hours (especially with the app alerts) if something has been taken off our porch or if someone broke into our house and then we can download the video. We don't need 10 days. This con is why i took off one star. . Overall, this camera does a really good job of what it is meant to do. Easy to use and good quality. Expensive video storage options but i knew that before i bought it. Good buy!

I did a lot of research on the best outdoor cams and a super genius geek friend recommended these. Best buy i ever made. There has been soe wi fi connectivity problems on one, and some notification issues on one but the customer service is unbelievable. You get someone who reads the notes from previous calls and offers intelligent help to sort out issues. One of my original cams had some notification issues, and after trying a couple solutions, they sent me a replacement. And it wasn't one of those " when we get your first one back, we'll send you a replacement" deals. They sent me the new one and patiently waited for the bad one while i recouped from a hip injury. The replacement lost its wi fi connectivity but i'm not sure if that was a technical issue or a "non-geek" user issue :). At all times i had someone's direct contact info and had follow up emails to make sure all was in working order. Without me asking for it, they reimbursed me for a time when i lost the subscription to nest aware, and added on 2 months for free. Though i haven't caught any intruders in my back yard, i have to laugh when i see this huge spider walking nightly across its web directly in front of the camera! intruder alert indeed! . I love that it records sounds, and that i can talk through it! i live in a rural back woods community and i love to scare the pants off my handyman and the well guy when they enter my gate, and i speak through the camera to tell them the gate is unlocked hee hee:)

K. Anderson, Western Australia

Wow! love it. I was a little intimidated when the box arrived and there seemed to be so many pieces for install. Well, i was worried for nothing! the instructions are pretty straight forward and easy to follow. My only "gripe" is that i had to plug in to a computer to get the camera setup on wifi. And that is only a gripe cause i don't really use a laptop so had to pull it out of the closest! ha! now, there was a question as to whether it was working cause i never saw the lights on the monitor . It's working, just don't see any indicator light. Anyway, install super easy and having the notifications is great. It let me know that the yard man had arrived! i put mine in backyard to watch the pool and the picture is easy to see. Feel so much more comfortable knowing what goes on when no one is home!

F. Alberta, Alaska says

Great outdoor camera. I have only had this for a couple of months, but it works pretty much flawlessly. Just plug in, check your location and be sure your wifi signal is working via the app on your phone or tablet, or computer. I have mine located on a detached garage about 40 ft from my router and it works great. I love the fact that it will send you notifications on your devices when it picks up movement or people. You can program specific zones to monitor within each cameras ranges. You can also specify which camera setting you want, i. E. 1080, 720 or auto. You can turn notifications on or off. You can schedule times your camera runs. I also records sounds pretty well. I can hear conversations up to15 ft away from the camera and you can also talk through the device if that is something you need. Perhaps at your front door etc. You can turn the monitor light on or off on the camera also. Pictures are pretty clear, but with a super wide angle, some items may appear smallish, but you can zoom in to see things better once it has recorded. My only complaint is when you zoom in on an item, the clarity is not the best, (night mode mostly) but perhaps. There is a fix i am not aware of yet. $10 month or $100 year for 10 days of stored video in the cloud. A little more for 30 days of video.

G. Rose, Brandenburg

Good quality, nice design, strong magnet, good viewing angle, good software. Do note that these cameras will use quite a lot of bandwidth so keep an eye on your data caps for your isp. The data usage estimation range is on nest cam outdoor webpage and located under specs. I talking a range around 60gb-300gb+ per month per camera depending on activity level and resolution. Just keep that in mind, it didn't really come to my attention until i saw the spec page myself. . The software features are really top notch, really makes it feel worth the monthly cost. You can set custom activity zones, name them, set their color and shape. You have the option of sharing a link to the camera with or without a password or you can invite someone to have full access to your cameras as long as they register their own free nest account. It feels as though they thoroughly thought this out and use their own products. . You can link your nest account to the myq liftmaster garage door app, a neat bonus feature. . Cons:. Would like clearer video, but looks fine considering the price. It still gets the job done well, but don't expect to zoom in and get useful details. A suggestion to nest would be to design the attached cables in a way as to make it easier to run behind walls and holes. Needs more color selection when creating activity zones, there are four colors to choose from, the washed out purple being difficult to distinguish from the regular gray activity dots on the nest aware feature.

I decided it would be nice to have some security cameras so i first began with the arlo system, which was initially very impressive, but became a battery eating monster with finicky wifi manners. . So having poured $400 down the toilet, i was a bit gun shy about trying again with another system. I've had good luck with nest in the past, so i thought i'd give it a shot. . I wouldn't call myself 'handy' but installation was a breeze. You just have to figure out how you are going to plug this guy in. This either means using an exterior plug or drilling a hole through your house to plug it in inside. . To make this really annoying the cable is welded into the camera unit, and there is a non-removable plug on the end measuring 19mm. So this means you are likely going to have to use a pretty large drill bit to make a hole that you can thread this plug though. Why the heck they couldn't have used a mini usb or some other kind of connector is quite beyond me. . Other than this stupid design feature, other set up was a breeze, and i had the camera installed successfully pretty quickly. . Once installed, i've found the image quality very high, and the intelligence used by the system to be pretty spectacular. It reliably tells the difference between movement and an actual person, the software works well both on a computer (with extra functionality) and the app, which is shared with the app used for other nest products. . If you want it to remember recent footage, you do have to subscribe, and that's going to cost you $100 a year, or $50 for additional cameras. Kind of annoying after investing $199 per camera. You'd think they'd offer 6 months or so free for new subscribers just to ease us in, rather than hitting us up for more money right after buying an already expensive product. . Speaking of hitting us up for money, there is some inexcusable nagware built into the app that constantly reminds us to subscribe and warns us of the perils of not subscribing. This happens both in the app, and even in the emails generated when movement is detected. This is annoying and unnecessary in and of itself, but is especially annoying that the same request is made over and over even after paying for a subscription! . . You'd think nest would have the decency to remove the stupid ads after i paid! . . In addition to the image quality and intelligence of the alerting, there is also a live microphone and the ability to speak to an intruder. . Some people have commented that this would be 'easy' to defeat. I guess it would. Take a bat to it, spray paint the lens, or pull it off the magnetic mount and it would be done. And if the bad guy put some thought in, he could probably do this without being caught 'on tape. '. . Then again, this is kind of true of any system really. Just ask kim kardashian, who can clearly afford a lot of security. . When it comes to security, i think that no system is perfect. But i got this more for just knowing what is going on at the house. Was a package delivered? did i leave the garage door open? did someone just come to the door? is someone snooping around back? that kind of thing. . A well motivated criminal is going to scope out the house, disable this system and break in anyway. . But the real question is this. If you are just a regular person in a regular home, is a regular criminal really going to take that much time to try and defeat this system when your neighbor probably doesn't have any security at all? . . Criminals are generally lazy and would rather take advantage of a situation, so in all likelihood, they will just target another property, rather than plot how to disable this system on your home. . For most basic security needs, and the convenience of being able to check on your home in real time, this is a great system with a lot of upside. . I'd like to see version 2. 0 have a better connector so i don't have to put a 1" hole in my wall to thread the cable through. And i'd like the app to be updated to stop hassling me about subscribing, even after i have already subscribed. This is outrageous and annoying. But with those two reservations aside, i think this is a great product, and i have already ordered two more. Now we just have to see if it survives a brutal minnesota winter!

our set of nest outdoor and indoor cams has performed well so far. . - installation was easy, both physically getting the cams in place and getting them linked to the network. . - we have full functionality and the ability to monitor our home while away on vacation within just a few minutes. . - the video and audio quality are very good. . - the ability to link the camera to home/away conditions based on your phone's location is extremely useful. . - on the downside, the cameras suffer from short bouts of losing network connectivity, usually on the order of 2-5 minutes, after which they reconnect automatically. I haven't determined if this is due to a weak/intermittent wifi signal, passing interference or something else. . Our crittercam pics:. 1-3) kitties. 4) raccoon. 5) opossum. 6) road runner. Our crittercam video: opossum

I installed my new outdoor nest cam in late september without problems. Having tried a couple foscam outdoor cameras, i've been very happy to avoid some of the problems i had with the foscam cameras. Just one example, foscam would make software updates every month or so, and these didn't occur automatically, so i'd have to call customer support, and often waited 30 minutes or more for assistance. Nest cam automatically updates (as does my nest thermostat). . I really like the wide camera angle and high quality video, and especially appreciate the ability to designate areas in the camera's field of vision which should be highly sensitive to motion. . I also highly value the email notifications when there is unusual or significant motion, particularly if it is a person, but not if the motion seems to be less significant or inanimate. . I'm able to view live streaming from my ipad at any time, which is invaluable when i'm traveling. . While it's not critical to me, the ability to hear any sounds in the area via the embedded microphone, and respond and speak via the embedded mini-speaker, would certainly be helpful for those who have reason to interact with people in the vicinity. (my camera is pointed at the back deck and beyond, and not normally intended for interacting with people in the area). . The reason i don't give a full 5 stars is because the camera is a bit pricey ($200), plus $10 per month for 10 days of video history or $30 per month for 30 days of video history. But overall, i'm very happy with the capabilities of this high quality outdoor camera!

I've set up nearly a dozen of these now for different clients. They're super simple, though if exposed to the weather you should get a housing for it as well. I try to place them under eaves instead of out in the weather, but sometimes it's just not possible. And, i haven't found a housing for these i love yet. . Edit 1-17-17: today i had to chat with a nest rep (had the choice of calling, text was easier at the moment) and discovered that their customer service is wonderful. I had dropped a magnetic mount from an outdoor camera out of my pocket, on a roof. It rolled across the roof and dived into a snowbank, and even a strong magnet and a magnetic sensor couldn't find it. So i had to buy a new mount. Except i didn't, because they just sent me another one for free, no problem, maybe 15 minutes of my time in a chat doing other things too. So the customer service is exemplary, and another reason these cameras are freaking awesome. And no, i don't work for them.

Installation: took me about 1/2 hour to get 2 cameras installed. Simple drilling of 2 screws to mount the magnetic base, then magnetically attaching the camera to the base. The cameras are small and inconspicuous. App setup was the same, very quick and easy. . Functionality: the picture is great in both day and night. High def picture on my phone and computer. The cameras can be set to notify you of movement and/or when it senses a "person" on the camera. The movement/person sensor is accurate 100% of the time, so far. The app is super easy to set up and use. Sound is solid too. I can hear the kids playing on the driveway, down to the little side discussions they are having. I can also talk to them via the app, and they can hear me clearly. . Wires: because these are powered, you'd have to have a power source/outlet nearby in order to plug in the camera - or account for where your wires will be placed, unless you don't mind them being visible. I have siding where i placed the cameras, and was able to tuck the wiring into the siding far enough to the ground, then run an extension cord on the ground to the plug (buried the extension cord in mulch, to the plug). . I will likely be purchasing an additional camera.

For a first gen outdoor nest cam - this is very good. I have half a dozen nest cams in my home and office - and had a few drop cams before that - to say i quite like them. Many of the other reviews will walk you through what comes with this camera, how to mount it etc - but i had a hard time finding answers to a couple questions i had:. . 1. Can you use the camera without the power adapter? the short answer is no. . For those not aware - the wire that is non-removable / attached to the camera ends with a usb plug. There is then a second wire that the usb plugs into - which terminates in a electric plug. I didn't need all of this wire - and would have liked to just plug the usb directly into an electric adapter. Well, i tried it - and the camera does power on - but does not seem able to hold a wifi connection without this extra power adapter + long wire. Bummer. . 2. Can you rotate the black camera part in the housing - like the indoor nest cams - so say you could have the wire come out the side or top of the housing - but keep the logo / camera rotated around the other way / right side up? nope - the black part of the camera is part of the white housing - they are positioned together. The app will let you rotate the flip the camera image 180 degrees - but nothing more precise than that. . In the future it would be very nice if they would add a detachable wire to the camera - with color options for that wire, and a rotating camera eye in the housing. Different cord length options would have also been a nice touch. Otherwise this is a very nice camera. I also bought the highly rated black silicone housing - to better blend this camera into its environment - unfortunately the cable is still bright white.

If you've ever researched consumer-level outdoor security cameras, you know that the offerings have left a lot to be desired. Poor hardware and even worse software have pretty much defined the entire market. Commercial options are better, but they're also far more expensive and lack the basics of what i want in a home security camera (cloud recording and a decent smart phone app, to start with. ) fortunately, the nest outdoor security camera now exists. . So far, i'm really impressed with it. The video and audio quality are great, but the best feature is the smartphone app (android, in my case. ) it's fast, it's easy to use, and it just works. This is a surprisingly difficult thing to get right, but nest does. Scanning through hours of video is just as responsive and intuitive as watching the live feed or the last detected moment of activity. In contrast to this experience, a couple days ago i had to check the security feed at work. It involved installing a java applet that's probably not from this decade and a phone app that crashed any time i tried to seek through the video. . Installing the camera was painless, and the fact that i didn't have to run to the hardware store means they got the accessories right. The only complaint i have at this point is that the cables are too long. I actually have an outdoor outlet that's only a few feet from where i have the camera mounted, so i had to coil up the other twenty feet of cord. It's not ideal, but it's also not a big deal. . To give a sample of the image quality, i've included a couple screenshots. The last screenshot is of the app's timeline, which gives previews of all detected activity (in this case, cars driving by. ). . As time goes on, i'll update this review with my experience relating to other aspects of the hardware and software. For now, i think it's an excellent buy and would recommend it to anyone looking for an outdoor security camera. . 2016-10-01 update: i've had the camera running for a couple weeks now and it has not required a single adjustment or even the classic "disconnect power to restart device" move. I would appreciate more playback controls beyond 15-second skip within the app, but they are available via the web interface. Overall, still very happy with it. . 2017-10-10 update: a year later and the camera's still great. No adjustments or power-cycling reboots to speak of, and the android app has improved quite a bit. Short gif-like clips appear as notifications whenever activity is detected, and they usually tell me everything i need to know. I rarely watch the raw video feed now unless i'm looking for something specific. Over the last year it's recorded all sorts of random things - a hit and run, property theft, and a neighbor who really didn't like being out in the rain. Well worth the $100/year price!

Though there have been some technical hick ups when adding on additional cameras the staff when i call has worked with me and because of their customer service i will keep my five star rating as the product is everything i hoped it would be. If you have good wi-fi i recommend 1080 p and pointing it not just down on your porch or driveway but actually pointed outward towards your street and neighbors houses . I caught two car burglars breaking into my neighbors cars because i had the camera lower pointing not just on my porch and front yard but it witnessed them scouting then breaking into the neighbors car which was used for evidence for the police. By keeping the camera from going into night vision i was also able to identify the criminals by the color of their clothing so if you can opt out of night vision.

I can't tell you how much i am satisfied with this product. I thought it would be complicated to set up and it is not. The designers have thought of everything as far as i am concerned. I installed it myself. It comes with a magnet that fit securely on my metal door which overlooks the front yard. I didn't have to run the wire outside which is what i initially planned to do. I connected to an indoor outlet and to the adapter and voila video feed-obviously after setting up the blue tooth and wi-fi connection first. The package comes with all that you will need except the tools obviously. There is a youtube video that explains how to go through the steps and so far the camera has logged the fedex delivery guy. The quality of the photos and video is excellent. We had an incident with the neighborhood kids alleging that some vandals broke our mailbox post so we bought this to secure our safety and prevent any hearsay. Now we will have proof of any further property destruction. Thank you for making set up a breeze.

Update 6/13/17. Changing my review from 3 to 5 stars. The offline issues have completely stopped. I assumed there was a strong wifi signal near my camera because my phone seemed to indicate there was one at its location. However, after installing a wifi extender near the camera i have had zero offline issues. Really liking the camera now and customer service has been responsive with help! thanks nest! . . Generally works about 95% of the time. I do get offline issues about once per day (about 10min offline/day) and they are not due to connection issues since i verified a strong wifi signal. Expect to pay for the monitoring $100/year otherwise it is useless. Picture is clear though. On the fence whether i would buy another one though.

So far i have purchased and installed two of these and i am pretty happy. I am not concerned about the pricing plan assuming that i can utilize the create clip feature that i have not yet tried. Assuming that works i think the pricing is fair. . There are a few quirks:. . 1. When setting these up on your wifi it takes a long time to get the appropriate responses back from nest. I've become convinced there is an actual person there intervening on each connection. The set up app seems to work better than the pc version. The find networks function also seems faster if your device is on the same ssid that you want to use for the camera. I was unable to make use of the scan feature for set up (not sure why) and had to enter the numbers from the back of the camera. Do write these down before placing the camera or covering it with a skin. . Due to placement, i had weak wifi signals and ended up using two netgear ac750 wifi range extenders (ex3700-100nas) to create dedicated 2. 4 ghz ssid's for each camera. Someone else said it worked better on 2. 4 so i just believed them. . My advice is to be very patient. Let the system respond before you start cursing much or give up. . 2. I had an issue that ended up being related to power fluctuations where i installed one inside my garage. My window air conditioner in the garage is on the same circuit and as it would cycle this caused the issue. This was like a mini brownout (milliseconds) and would knock the camera offline sometimes without it ever coming back. Only the camera by the way and nothing else connected on the same circuit. If you are offline long enough, meaning not wifi connected, you will sometimes lose your settings. . I ended up installing an apc back-ups 425va ups battery backup & surge protector (be425m) between the camera and wall socket. This solved that issue and the camera is no longer dropping out. . 3. A small issue on reflection due to putting one in my garage looking out to the porch. I like it much better than trying to find power anywhere convenient outside. It is about two inches from the glass. I have double pane windows. I mounted this on a standard camera tripod standing on top of a table using the threaded magnetic base that comes with the wall mount by wasserstein. . After turning off the status lights i would get an "inside the garage" reflection at night if the garage was not completely dark. This was all due to backlighting. This was easily solved by making sure the camera had the window curtains pulled tight behind it completely blocking the light (plastic clothes pins work great for this). . 4. There is a very brief time during the day (one minute or less) where one of my cameras ends up pointing toward the sun. This is really unavoidable given the placement restrictions. This causes a whiteout of the camera and it shuts off the view and (i think) recording feature for some time (longer than it should). The wifi remains connected however and the camera will come back on automatically after about five minutes. This is somewhat annoying. . 5. As several people have already mentioned. The second piece of the cord, the part that connects to the electric socket, has this ridiculously large round connector to push the usb male end into (coming from the camera). This is not a transformer or anything else useful. It merely adds a few more feet of cord between the camera and electric socket (if you need it). . Throw it away! you are better off using a normal usb wall adapter. If you need extra length you can also use an usb extension cable. Both are available on online store. . Hope this is useful.

E. Barbara, Cumbria says

I bought one indoor and one outdoor camera. I didn't want to plug this into an outdoor outlet because it could be easily stolen. I plugged it into an outlet in my attic by my hvac unit and ran the cord to the ceiling in my entryway outside. This gives me a view of people at my front door and of the street immediately in front of my house. Since it is a small entryway, the 130 degree camera is much smaller angle. I drilled a hole in the ceiling large enough for the usb attachment which is much bigger hole need for just the wire. I mounted it about 7ft above the ground. So far, the quality is good, but somebody standing at the front door seems a bit far away. I am pretty happy with the camera and the software, but not too thrilled about paying the monthly fee for the subscription. I did find a 3rd party app called blue iris that looks promising if you want to store data locally without a subscription. It does not run on a mac, so it isn't going to work for me (search youtube on how to set it up with nest. ) there is a one time fee for the blue iris software and a trial version to make sure you like it. For the nest software, the timeline is a great feature to find motion on the video. It would be 5 stars if i could record locally. Or use my storage in the cloud with icloud or onedrive

Initial review 8/11/2017: i hate reviewing products after just a few hours or days of use because of the shiny new object effect, and here i am doing a review when i only installed these cameras last night. . These are very solidly built devices. I recently tried a cheaper consumer version and i can tell you these are much more substantial! i read some complaints about the cords. I think the cords are perfect. Power and data are affected by the quality of the wiring and insulation. These cords are designed for outside use in an electrically noisy environment. That's a good thing. They aren't that difficult to run. . The field of view is great. I wouldn't mind a larger one, but there are probably problems with that too. . It seems to do a good job of detecting people. It seems to ignore our yorkies. . I'd like to use it for another few weeks before "recommending" it, but i'm very happy so far. . Update 8/14/2017: i think i've figured out the zones and when i'm notified and the other flagged activity. 1. It seems to do a great job of identifying "people" versus other objects and animals. Every time it's notified me of a person, it has been a person moving in the "zone" or camera. I like that. There have been times where there was a person moving, but the camera just said there was activity and didn't say it was a person. It seems to pickup people about 80-90% of the time. 2. Obviously, there is some algorithm at work determining how much of the data/image is changing and at what rate. The camera seems to rarely flag my yorkies moving around the backyard, i'm good with that; otherwise, it'd just be saying there's constant activity in those zones. It's probably because between the size of the dogs and the position of the camera they don't take up much of the "frame". Bugs occasionally, but rarely set off the "activty" alerts. When bugs have setup off an alert, i can see why. They were moving fast and took up a decent amount of the frame. We learned we have a cat that visits our front door about 2-3 times a week to do some hunting. 3. Zone setup is easy. The hard part is figuring out the angles. For example, if a person is standing on my front porch, from the position of the camera, their head is in the street, torso is in the yard and their lower half is on the stoop. Do i just zone the stoop or do i want to extend it out to catch the activity "earlier" in the approach to the house? that catches more cars passing by, particularly at dark when the headlights are passing through the zones. Anyway, i like it. I just need to get it set right for my wants.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

. Kimberly, Lincolnshire says

Camera set-up is straight forward. It took me about 40 minutes to get it programmed and mounted, then another 10 minutes to adjust the field of view. I would give it five stars but for the lag time between a triggering event and the report that appears on my android phone - the delay is around 25 seconds. I get it that it takes time for the camera to gather the image, process it, and then send it via cellular link to my cell phone, but one of the advertised uses of the device is to communicate in real time with people in the camera's field of view and a 25 second lag renders that function impracticable. I would be interested in other user's experience with this feature, whether my lag time is typical or long, and any measures they have taken to abate the problem. Of course, if the nest folks are reading this review, i would appreciate a response and some advice. I do have a wireless booster set up about 15 feet from the camera.

It advertised wifi a/b/g/n/ 2. 4 to 5. 0 ghz compatible right on the box. . After great deal of efforts by myself and working with nest chat line, . Nest finally admitted this product is not 5. 0 compatible, it only works for 2. 4 ghz, a very busy band to use. . False advertising from nest, shame on such a reputable company. Great disappointment for me. Return and refund this p product.

I love it. However, the time laps function has it kinks. Also the support hotline sucks incredibly. I called them twice and used the chat service once. The people behind it apear to have never seen this product and just read out of the manual. A call goes like this:. Me: "i'd like to create time laps videos of a full day and typcially choose the 15 second time laps option. 90% of the time i get an error message. What am i doing wrong? ". Nest support: "can you please hold on for a moment. Let me check if i can find something about this in the manual. ". . Nest support: "it says that the maximum time laps you can create is for 1 hour". Me: "sir, the hour refers to how long the time laps video will be once it compressed the captured time frame. The manual says you can create time laps videos from up to 24 hours periods". - these guys have no clue what the nest cam, what a time laps video is etc. I'd say if you are blind, they will read the manual to you but that about all they are good for. Don't expect a reasonable interpretation of the manual. They don't seem very technical. . I like the video quality and subcribed to the 30 day subscription where i can go back in time and create videos. Some things don't just work and you should expect to play with it for a while before you can make it work. I would really want a feature where a longer period time laps video can be created at a click. . The mount is genious, love that its plugge to a power source but connected to wifi. There are many pros and cons for this product but overall i'd recommend it. . Oh, we are using it to capture the construction of our new house and the idea is to create a time laps of the 6+ months construction phase.

. Lawrence, Rheinland-Pfalz

I like the nest cam outdoor for more reasons than i do not. The reasons for not liking the camera, is for what they do not tell you. Without the nest cam aware subscription the alerts will drive you nuts. The ability to set up zones is only with the subscription service. These zones allow the camera to focus on just areas within the field of view i can configure. Thus limiting the amount of notifications received. Also without nest aware the video play back history kept is a mere 3hrs. It would have been nice to know these things up front. Probably would have still purchased because the seem to be the best cameras on the market right now. . Setup was a breeze, i did have some trouble syncing the camera to my device. There was a step that said "i should now see live video", but i was not. So i started over a couple of times then it worked. As others have no doubt pointed out. The unnecessarily huge tip on the camera plug make through wall installs kind of irritating because you have to drill a larger 7/8s hole for the smaller camera wire to fit through. In my case i used dual feed through bushings with a little silicon to seal the hole. . The camera display is clear and in hd. The sound quality is pretty good, actually better than expected and the ability for 2 way communication is genius. I plan to pick up more of these as this first one i am totally pleases with. . Update. . So after months of have my nest up and running i am running into issues. When i first installed (didnt sign up for nest aware trial), the cameras worked well. After constant pop ups/reminders i signed up for nest aware, cameras worked well. I have since let the aware trial lapse without continuing the service. Now the cameras work like crap. Nothing with my network has changed. The camera consistently goes offline. When it does record incidents or motion now, there is no video. Seems to do just stills. I'd hate to think this is a tactic by the manufacturer to get me to subscribe to the aware service. I would have returned the product if this happened in the first 30 days. I am hoping the extended warranty can help out.

V. Gloria, Wiltshire says

Warning - these cameras will not notify you if a person is there unless you pay $150. 00 per year to nest! you can set them to see "motion" without paying the $150. 00 but i experimented and apparently "motion" does not include if they see a person! further, if you don't have mega bandwidth these cameras will hog your bandwidth which negatively effects everything else you use from your ipad to your wireless computer. I phoned my provider to find out why my service declined in the middle of the day and it was seen that a huge upload was happening, which could only have been nest. I called nest to ask them to only do the huge upload after 1 am and was told i needed to buy more bandwidth. I already have to have these cams set to the lowest possible resolution so the video is not clear enough to identify a perp. Believe me i am waiting for fiber to come here but meanwhile, i feel that nest is ripping off the consumer by not telling them the truth about the above issues. I am sorry i spent my money and a lot more time than nest puts out to have these installed.

A. Crawford, Prince Edward Island

Expensive as hell and won't stay attached to the base under wind load. Speakers are not very loud and a little rain on the lens makes it useless till you clean in. . Pros:. Great picture quality day or night. Incredibly easy to install. Very easy to use. . Cons:. Weak magnet. Lens is not hydrophobic. Monthly fees are very high. No blue iris support. . If ring doorbell comes out with 1080p camera this size i'll switch.

O. Anonymous, Barnet says

Its a very well made design. The quality is excellent. Was easy to set up and install. The reason i gave 3 stars is there is history or recording unless you pay monthly/yearly subscription . I think the product itself is already costy and to charge for more is just greedy.

K. Smith, Auvergne

Great camera and easy to install, but don't be fooled by the ability to talk to someone when you get a notification on your phone ( i have the iphone 6). Notifications are delayed and could be as much as 30 minutes according to support. They say it is the networks fault! i can understand a very, very slight delay, but mine could be as much as 2 minutes. Nest needs to update its server's. I could buy something with my amex card or visa and as the clerk is running my card, i get a notification on my phone instantly. I was going to install several cameras but am glad i bought just one to see how it worked. Until they address the server issue i'll wait or look into a different camera system.

J. Stacey, Kirklees says

The camera is relatively easy to install and stays put even in heavy wind or hail. Video quality is pretty decent, even at night time, though don't expect to be able to make out faces of anyone more than 20 feet out. . Pretty decent camera all in all. Except for the service required if you want to save any video from it. $100 per year to record 10 full days worth of video which is both expensive and way more footage than most people will ever need, especially since you can create and save clips indefinitely. On top of that, their service seems to go down pretty regularly and is extremely slow most of the time. Viewing a live feed is almost impossible as is viewing prerecorded content as it just keeps buffering. That's not to mention the constant disconnects it experiences despite the camera itself being right next to the wi-fi router inside and having the highest priority of all our devices. . It's still nice to have but if they would improve their servers to remove the constant slowness and disconnecting issues then offer a much cheaper alternative to saving the camera footage, i'd give this five stars. As it is, the nest subscription and interface are the biggest problems with this product.

. Maria, Wolverhampton

I have 5 outdoor nest cameras in two separate locations as well as several indoor cameras. In general they work, but there are a few serious defects you should know about before you buy one. Unfortunately, afaik no other vendor has a camera that covers all the bases so i've been willing to roll with nest for now. . On the plus side, installation and setup are a snap. Ios app is easy to use as is the web interface. Cameras have been through one winter in a cold, wet place and one summer in a hot place and are still fine. The indoor cameras turn off when we enter the house and turn on when we leave. . On the negative side:. - you cannot get person alerts within a zone. In my case, a sidewalk is in view but i don't need to know about every person who walks by. Conversely, i don't need to know about every squirrel and rabbit in the motion zone i set up. I really want person alerts only within the zone but nest does not support that (i have confirmed it with nest). If you have person alerts on it will notify you of any person detected in the camera's entire field of view. - image quality is good for things that are very close (under 10 feet) but not good for a greater distance. If you have a small, tight space - like a short driveway off an alley - you should be able to see a license plate. If you don't, you'll be able to describe a vehicle in general terms but that's about it. - alerts have a strange randomness. I'll get an alert for a bug or squirrel, but then when i review the timeline there was a person that i didn't get a notification for. - if you have a lot of cameras, the spend for nest aware (even the 10-day history) starts to get into the hundreds of dollars a year (after, of course, you've already spent many hundreds on the cameras). The camera is pretty much useless without nest aware, as it's required for history, clips, person alerts, etc.

E. Beale, Georgia says

Video quality is good as long as you pay for the extra nest aware. I don't, because i don't care about extended recording. But without nest aware, i get poor quality even on the short time that the camera saves. Many dead spots, choppy playback, etc. If they'd told me that the camera is essentially useless except as a live feed without aware, i never would have bought it.

N. Cindy, Barking and Dagenham

If you don't plan on paying for nest aware which is either $100/year or $300/year then this camera isn't very useful. You will either get too many annoying alerts that aren't important or basically no alerts. They don't really tell you how bad the camera is without nest aware. . Without nest aware. You only get live feed with video. You get (some) snapshots of alerts. You can only look at the previous 3 hours. No zone alerts. (this means you're probably going to get a lot of annoying alerts that don't matter to you, or you can basically not get any alerts). Since you only have picture snapshots, a lot of alerts won't even have anything in the picture because the motion detected it too late. It also makes it hard to tell what the event is sometimes. . Easy solution to make this $200 hardware usable. 1) allow zone alerts. 2) instead of photo snapshots, make 5-10 second video (that starts just before the motion activation was triggered). 3) keep more than 3 hrs. I think 24 hrs is the least you should do. . Alternatively. Do a 5 day feed for $50/year.

U. Cassella, Ohio says

I have mixed emotions about this product for a number of reasons. I bought 5 of these with the intention of installing all of them on the same day, so far i installed 2 - i might return the rest. The good - it was very simple to install, offers great video and audio quality, great features for motoring and play back, 2 way audio etc. I was doing some research and this is probably one of the best security cams out there. If you have a strong wifi signal in many areas (i have access points all over my property) of your home and a power outlet you are good to go. No worries about changing camera batteries, connecting to a proprietary hub with a limited range, etc. Pretty much it is plug and play, almost. The bad: had issues with the nest app setting up my first cam on my iphone (ios 10) - the app just hung on looking for wifi networks. So i plugged the usb end of the cam into my computer, ran the . Exe and set it up that way. The usb power connection with the cylinder lock mechanism from the camera to the power connector caused me to drill a hole much larger than theoretically needed when installing the camera wire through walls. They should have offered some sort of disconnect or a locking plug-thing on both ends that way you don't have to drill such a large hole to feed it through. Once i had it installed it worked but then stopped. I needed to reboot my router and change the wifi channel from 1 to auto - so far so good. My biggest gripe is the nest aware cloud storage service to provide monitoring features and storage of your history. I found this out after i bought the product - they need this information to be clear in the description of the product on online store's site as it is no where to be found. The problem is that they only offer 2 cloud storage option subscriptions to store your history with their nest aware cloud storage offering. Don't get me wrong you get some great features for it but those prices are also a bit high for cloud storage especially if you have multiple cameras. Here is the break-down: currently as of 10/24/2016:. . 1) 10 day - $100 per year per camera with a $50 discount for each additional camera. . So for me - that would be $300 / year - to store 10 days of history for 5 of my cameras. That i already spent $1000 on. . Or - they also have:. . 2) 30 day - $300 per year / camera with a discount 50% discount per camera ($150 per year). . This is ridiculous for home consumers who want simple home security. I used this for home security, if nothing happens on that day - it can be overwritten the next day for all i care. Nest - please make a subscription option for home security for owners to choose how much storage they want or offer and entry level package to store 1 or 2 days storage at a reasonable price. . I found out that if you contact nest and make this suggestion - they will provide your feedback and report it to the sale organization for consideration. I lived chat with a nest rep yesterday and that is what he told me.

F. Donna, North Carolina

5 stars for the hardware, including installation and included wiring. 1 star for the nest app and web interface. Google: what were you thinking? requires flash? app on ios hangs up constantly and becomes non-responsive, and gets worse with each release. Functionality is poor (to put it nicely). Cloud video storage and event detection is great, but when it is so painful to access, what's the point? google/nest - you can do much better.

I. Guest, Oxfordshire says

Camera started out great but has slowly been deteriorating. It seems to switch between 5 ghz and 2. 4 ghz and when it is on 5 ghz i lose the connection because of poor signal. Not sure how this is happening but that is what the technician with nest stated. I asked how i could lock in 2. 4 ghz and never got a reply. Looked for assistance on the app and the web to no avail. I really felt that the technician had no idea what she was doing. This is making my decision to purchase cloud storage plan even easier. On the positive side, the install was very easy. Instructions clear and straight forward. Up in running quickly. The android app is a little clunky. Has a bar across the top advertising i'm on a trial cloud plan and to purchase a plan. Very annoying as you can't get rid of it. Can't get forward or reverse controls when in full screen. Web page functionality is much easier. Wish the camera wouldn't trigger motion from a sensor light coming on.

As much as i was in love with the indoor nest cam, as disappointed am i in the outdoor one. I mounted it on the overhang roof on the 2nd floor since it is easier for cabling into the attick and getting a better view on what i wanted to monitor. Since it is a bit higher up, you can notice it doesnt zoom too well. Also it notices cars driving by on the road (nice), but it doesnt see me entering the garage which is much closer in! . Of course elegant design, but the vision at night is also not as good as it was with the indoor. I had really expected this guy to be the indoor with an outdoor casing, but it is not. One of the downsides of this cam is also that when it is mounted, you can change its angle, of course, but you have to do that manually. It would have been good for an outdoor cam to be remotely adjustable.

S. Kelly, Havering says

It has been almost 2 months with 2 nest outdoor cams for my living house. Using iphone7s to control. . The product is very good. Almost same as their promotion video. Easy to use and install. And the built quality is very good. And i believe most of people buy this because it detects movement and let notify you through your phone and other family member. Here is my experience with "app notification". . App is great. Easy to use. Not complicate. But, when the cam see some movement, like people or car approaching, this app sends a notification. But there is almost 1 minute delay to get the notification through my phone. When you watch their promotion video, delivery guy is approaching to front door, and nest cam send notification to user, and user uses the app and talk to the delivery guy using nest cam speaker and microphone. Which is not happening in real world. When you received the notification, they are long gone. And this notification is so sensitive, it acts by sun shade moving, falling leaves, even mosquito flying. I hope they can update software to make this key feature works as same like their video. . There is a delay to get notification from your cam. And nest didn't tell you that. It didn't work like promotion video.

I own three indoor nest cameras that i primarily use to keep an eye on my pets while i'm away. I decided to purchase the long-awaited outdoor nest cam. I have to say that i'm not impressed with the video quality. The picture looks sharp and bright but i could not give a detailed description of an intruder if i had to and that's during the day, during darkness, using night vision, forget it. Also the algorithm on this motion detection is weak. I get a motion alarm every time a fly or a nat gets near the camera, nearly every few seconds. The usb plug casing is so bulky i had to use a 1" huge pvc conduit to run the cable through. I've included a couple of images straight from my iphone as a sample. The number one reason for only three stars is the price for their nest aware recording. The first camera goes for $10 a month for a 10-day recording. Every camera after that is $5 a month. Now with four cameras i pay $25 a month, that's the price of a fully monitored alarm service. Pros:. Easy installation, wireless, records to a cloud, self-monitoring on a smart phone. Cons:. Price of recording for multiple cams, picture pixalized at zoom, magnet mount not secured enough, cable and plug too bulky for a clean install.

M. Nellie, Hounslow says

This is my fourth nest cam, but first outdoor model. The installation was problematic mainly due to design problems with the supplied cables. First off, why white? this sucker stands out like a sore thumb on my new olive green craftsman house in idaho. Admittedly i knew it was white before i purchased it. I wasn't sure of the size. It needs choices. How about black. The wiring is a whole different kettle of mess. Fixed length cabling with a clunky connector right in the middle and a whole lot of extra wire that i had to hide in a blank unconnected outdoor outlet box. Nest will undoubtedly fix these issues or not sell a lot of these cameras and when they do they should offer a decent trade in for these clunkers. The quality of the picture is as usual terrific. The ease of wifi connectivity as good as ever. The form factor needs work. Big time.

G. Susana, Swindon

It s a very nice camera with great features but . 1. A two-day subscription service would be enough for me. Or even a five-day would be good at a reasonable fee. If so nest would be my go-to company. That is if 2 were possible. 2. I got the nest outdoor so that family and friends could checkout the wild life activities in my back yard. But without auto focus this isn t happening. I won t be using nest aware because i ll replace the camera as soon as i can find my ideal cam.

Worked great fpr a couple of months until it started getting cold out. Now, i live in north carolina, so we don't get that cold, maybe down to 30 overnight or on the rare occasion the 20's. . When it started getting colder the camera started to go offline - usually during the nights, but sometimes during the day. There were also days were the weather was warmer and it was offline a lot. . So here it is. . Pros:. . Great picture and the camera works pretty good when it works. Like the alerts, etc. Easy to mount. . Cons:. . Seems to hate when it is cooler out and/or the nest service that hosts the alerts and your video feed has a massive amount of outages the last six weeks. I think it is a little bit of both.

D. Franklin, Tower Hamlets

The hardware is great and the installation was pretty easy. I really would like this device to work well, but the iphone app leaves a lot to be desired. I have two zones set up, one for the yard and one for the street. The green zone for the yard covers from my front door to just short of the street, and includes my driveway. The red zone includes the street. I have notifications on for the green zone and off for the red zone. This should give me notifications when someone comes into my yard, but not when a car goes down the street. (it works great this way for my ring doorbell! ) yet, the nest app sends me notifications for the green zone when a white vehicle goes down the street during the day, or a vehicle with headlight on goes down the street at night. The street is in the red zone. I also get notifications for the green zone if a passing cloud causes the front yard to suddenly get darker or brighter. I get notifications in the green zone when leaves blow into the yard from palm trees across the street. In short, i get way too many spurious notifications from the app. It's like the outdoor cam that cried wolf. My ring pro doorbell and app have a sensitivity setting, but otherwise app setup is very similar. Either the recognition algorithm with the ring doorbell is much better than the nest outdoor cam, or the sensitivity setting makes the difference. I just hope nest fixes the app soon, because all of the spurious notifications are nothing but a nuisance at this point.

Overall first thoughts, its ok. I had another camera in its spot but the nest is struggling with wifi coverage and video quality. Im buying a new wireless router ans hopefully that will help. Im also not a fan of the magnetic mount, camera doesn't stay where i want it too. . Update: new router fixed the connectivity issue. I had the standard router that comes with my cable service and it obviously was not that great. However, my camera has developed a bit of a fish eye halo effect at night. I'm replacing it, to see if that solves the issue.

Net outdoor camera is ok. I have two of them. They have a good picture and do work well with the subscription service, but i have yet to buy the service, still using the free 30 day trial. One thing that i don't like is the cameras keep "dropping off" the wifi connection at random. Unless your wifi is within 50 feet of the camera, or dependent on the signal strength, that is the main negative i have with these cameras. I had to install a wifi extender to make one of my cameras stay connected. The "drop off" or what the message says is "your camera is off-line or turned off", which it is not true, is frustrating. I had a power outage at my house for about an hour, and when the power went back on, the cameras never did turn themselves back on even though they are plugged in, couldn't figure that out. I had to physically turn off by unplugging them and re-plug to turn them back on. One more thing, if you use your own usb converter, you will need a 1500 (1. 5 amph) milli-amp usb output connection to keep camera on, otherwise it will turn on with a 750 (. 75maph) mah, but once camera start to "work" it shuts itself off. Decent camera, but not looking forward to paying for saved recording service if the cameras keep dropping the wifi signal.

P. Terry, Calderdale says

Video quality is excellent but frame rate is low(15) which makes fast moving details blurry if playing an activity back. Notifications and device support is pretty good for capturing events. Should also mention that the audio is pretty good and you can hear peoples conversations 10ft away when outside. I am not convinced they don't have some wireless connectivity issues as i have 4 cameras and periodically each one will randomly drop off the network. Nest support is pretty unhelpful and wont supply the logs for the devices and say there is low wifi (which i don't believe at all as a network engineer. ). I am happy with them and would only wish they could support local storage as a backup.

R. Hannah, Haringey

The camera is awesome. The installation instructions are great! but wait until you get to trying to figure out how to use what you see on your screen of your iphone. You are on your own. All the pamphlet does is show you how to physically hook up the camera. I had someone do it who was in the business of doing this. $450 later the cameras were working fine. It wasn't so bad because the guys spent about 4 hours hooking them up plus 2 hours travel time. . Nest just can't seem to put together simple instructions on how to understand what you see on your screen of you iphone and how to use it. I know that they know, why won't they just tell us what all the symbols mean and how you put the camera thru its paces? after a couple more days of farting around with it i guess i will call them to iron out the details. . It is the most awesome picture and audio-in that you can imagine.

Y. Imelda, Utah says

I set up my camera today, though i have not yet mounted it. The biggest issue i've noticed thus far is the approximately 4 second delay between actual motion and when the motion is seen on my iphone or computer. And after motion there is a 15-20 second period of camera unresponsiveness as the arrow goes round and round. I guess it is buffering or something? my download speed is about 105mbps and my upload is about 4-6mbps. Would my camera performance improve with an increase in my upload speeds?

Q. Anderson, Western Australia

The picture from the cameras is superb. The web app is reasonably good, but when you look back at old footage, it does have a habit of jumping back to live view which can be irritating. The cost of maintaining a 30 day history is quite expensive. . However, if you have the unit providing a security view of your property when you are not there and it goes "offline" it does not appear to restore itself. Our has been offline for 10 days and it will now have to wait until we can get back to the property to turn it off and on again and see if it resets.
