Review for ultra high definition home theater

Price was $1,678.37. Picture quality is good, but the noise comes up when it s running several hours, and it s kind of expensive, beyond that, we enjoy it!

Introduction

I got my uhd60 earlier this week. I had the optoma hd37 1080p projector before this one. The difference is night and day. . First thing that struck me was that the uhd60 is pretty big. Honestly i was hoping for a bit smaller. Hopefully future generations of this product will yield a physically smaller case. . The first time i turned it on, aligned it and fired up a 4k blu-ray, i was extremely pleased. Optoma really did hit it out of the park with this one. The pq rivals your local cinema. Very sharp, clear and bright. I had to actually step down to eco mode because the picture was a bit too bright. I did notice that sdr and hdr have different picture settings so you will need to calibrate both. . The blacks could be better. I will say, however, the dynamic black setting works pretty darn good. I never liked using that setting on previous projectors. On the uhd60, the dynamic black setting works perfectly and definitely helps with the black level without losing too much dark picture content. . The build quality on the case seems pretty cheap. Flimsy plastic door, knobs and buttons. It doesn t really take away from the performance but still, it s easy to tell where optoma cut corners. . This projector is whisper quiet. I am sitting about 4 feet below the projector and can barely hear the fan. . As i mentioned earlier, 4k blu-rays looks great. 4k content from netflix looks pretty good as well. Regular blu-rays also benefit greatly. Much smoother, detailed picture than on a 1080p projector. . I didn t have any issues with setup. My projector shoots just below the top of the screen but i was still able to achieve and perfectly aligned picture using the offset. It s tight but in my case, it works. . Sdr to hdr conversion is horrible. I don t plan on using it. The colors become too bright and the rainbow effect is horrible. . Haven t tried gaming yet but i m also not anal about lag so i couldn t tell you about that anyway. . Overall, very much worth the money. I am simply amazed at what optoma has done here at this price point. . Edit july 8, 2017 - just thought i would add a few things here since i've had this projector for almost a week. I did discover that any copper cable over 25 feet would not pass 4k hdr. I needed to purchase the ruipro fiber hdmi cable. It's expensive but it works. 4k hdr requires a ton of data and copper just doesn't work if the cable is too long. If you do use fiber hdmi, just be sure you have the ends connected correctly. One end must be on the projector and the other at the source material. It won't work the other way around. 4k ultra high definition home theater Home Theater, Uhd60 is a state of the art 4k ultra high definition (uhd) projector for home cinema and home theater capable of delivering ultra sharp images with a high level of detail and breathtaking color. with 4 times the pixels of 1080p, an ultra high resolution of 3840x2160, 3000 lumens, 1, 000, 000:1 contrast ratio, high dynamic range in the form of hdr10, vertical lens shift and a massive 1. 6x zoom, the optima uhd60 has been engineered to deliver the ultimate 4k uhd home viewing experience. incorporating ultra hd 4k resolution it brings content to life with thrilling detail, colour and contrast for a stunningly immersive experience. the optima uhd60 is powered by a revolutionary texas instruments 4k dlp uhd chipset with a high performance dmd utilizing xpr video processing technology with fast switching to display 8. 3 million distinct pixels as mandated by the consumer technology association s 4k uhd 2160p specification. the uhd60 can project 4k uhd images up to 140 inches, allowing viewers to be in optimum viewing area to enjoy all 4k uhd pixels, from a distance of up to 16 feet. the average 50-65 inch 4k uhd tv simply cannot match this, as viewers typically sit further away from their tv than the optimum viewing area of 6-9 feet. high dynamic range is the true star of the 4k uhd show, leveraging rec. 2020 and dci-p3 color gamut's to deliver bright and luminous whites, the deepest black levels, and beautiful, life-like, real world color that was previously only possible on the big screen at the movies. a generous 15% vertical lens shift and 1. 6x optical zoom provide a great deal of flexibility in terms of installation location within any home, while dual 4w stereo speakers generate audio that is loud and crisp. the lamp life on the uhd60 is a robust 10, 000 hours in eco mode and 15, 000 hours in dynamic mode. PROS
  • I had to give this projector a 4 instead of a 5 star because the 4k hdmi port on my first unit failed within the first month and i had to return it and get a different unit. The second unit seems to be working perfectly at 200+ hours use so far. The quality is otherwise good for the price and it makes a beautiful bright picture for what you pay for. To anyone buying this because of my experience i would recommend getting the 3rd party warranty. For those that have this unit if your signal drops randomly, the bad news is it will get worse (more frequent and longer in duration) until it leads to an eventual failure of hardware completely.
  • Upgraded from a 1080p epson 2030 3d projector, and holy crap this projector is nice! . Crystal clear on our super flat gray paint wall "screen" and way better color. Only downside is the cables all had to be upgraded to 18gbps hdmi cables and had to have our 4k player split the sound out because our 2yr old surround sound system wasn't 2. 2 security compliance. The short cable with the projector and a new 12ft cable for $10 off online store and all good
CONS
  • It's inexpensive for a 4k projector. The throw is rather long for my application, but probably ok for a small room. The big problem it has is there is no keystone correction. The button on the remote that says "keystone" simply gives you a message that says "not supported". This means you have to exactly line up the projector to get a truly rectangular image.
  • Nice image but was missing some important features i need and expect. No hdmi cec, no keystone adjustment which limits your install options. I have both of these on my 4 year old benq projector. Did i mention it s huge? like huge huge. Should be 16k for that size! not super impressed. Sent this back and stuck with my old benq.
  • The good: the picture is amazing, the fan noise is really low and it's easy to navigate through the menus. . The bad: the projector is really large, the casing feels cheap and it lasted less then an hour before it stopped working. I received a fan error and the device shut down. Error bellow. Warning: fanlocked. The projector will switch off automatically, please contact a service center for repair. . I will be giving this another shot when i get a replacement and see how long it lasts.

The uhd60 produces an excellent 4k image but the best feature is the hdr. I use this projector for movies and gaming. Horizon zero dawn looks amazing on the ps4 pro. I attached a photo with hdr off and hdr on. I also noticed that dark scenes are much better than my gt1080 projector that i replaced. I have no problem with 4k60 going through my denon avr-x3200w using the cable that came with the projector from my ps4 pro to the receiver and i bought the ruipro 33ft fiber hdmi cable to go from the receiver to the projector. Overall this is a great projector.

Optoma Uhd60 4k Ultra High Definition Home Theater Projector
Click to see NoticeOptoma Uhd60 4k Ultra High Definition Home Theater Projector (Video Device)" until now you had to spend $8000 or more to get a real 4k projector. Optoma has changed everything with the release of the uhd60 and uhd65. I had been anticipating the release of a reasonably priced 4k projector for the past 3 years so when i heard that optoma these new models i couldn't wait to get my hands on it. After receiving my pre-ordered uhd60 and testing it i can say i'm truly satisfied. . Although the uhd60/uhd65 are certified 4k projectors, it should be noted that they only have 2716x1528 micro-mirrors but they use pixel shifting to display a true 4k image, unlike the epson 5040ub, which is 1080p with pixel shifting. In short, you're getting real 4k with the uhd60. . Pros:. Price! . Amazingly crisp image quality. Quieter than i expected. It's nice and bright! . Lots of input/output port options. . Cons:. No negative vertical lens shift. (see video for more info). No keystone correction. Only 1 hdmi 2. 0 port. The other one is hdmi 1. 4a. Rec. 709 - it's not a true hdr projector, although it supports rec. 2020 signals. (see video for more info). Size - it's pretty big. Mediocre contrast ratio. Black levels could be better but image quality makes up for it."

The F.A.Q. for optoma uhd60 4k ultra high definition home theater projector

Ok i gave it 5 stars but it really should be 4, the extra star is due to the value proposition overall and because it was the first. . Pros. Amazing colors. Bright enough to use with a bit of ambient light. Quiet like a whisper. Lens cover tied to lense. . Cons. Bad black levels for the price and thus contrast ratio. Cheap plastic and very cheep feeling controls ( focus, zoom etc ). Light bleeds from the vents. Non-uniform focus ( if you focus the top left, bottom right becomes just a bit out of focus ) this is only really a minor problem when use use it for pc/text. Blue tinge to sometimes comes in scenes with white highlights. . Overall i am still happy to have a 4k projector with such colors at this price point, if there is only one thing i can ask for it would be better blacks.

A number of questions have been asked here.

After doing a lot of research i finally made the decision to buy the optoma. I'm very happy with the purchase and glad i picked it. Image quality is wonderful. I first set it up on a dark gray wall and was impressed with the quality even with some light coming into the room. Once i finished setting up the projector screen everything became crisper and brighter. I felt like this was very quick and easy to setup and configure. The only thing i would have liked is to be able to adjust the keystone but with the right adjustable projector mount this can be overcome. Overall great product and worth the purchase.

Best optoma uhd60 4k ultra high definition home theater projector (video device) in review

The 4k works really well. Connected my xbox one s through a yamaha 7. 1 channel 4k receiver and the picture quality is terrific. The up/down shift helps get the image perfectly aligned to the screen. There is no shift left/right and so you need to make sure to install this right. Used the "optoma technology ocm818w-ru" as the mount for this. Was planning to put some pictures here, but, the photos don't do justice. A non 4k photo on a 4k image does not do justice to the image

Due to not one but two sony 4k blu-ray units not syncing 4k video, i very nearly abandoned my quest for a 4k update. A samsung ubd-k8500 4k uhd blu-ray player rescued my installation. What a difference! if your existing high def setup does not include the hdmi 2. 0 and hdcp 2. 2 capability, you have to buy a new a/v receiver, blu-ray player and the 4k projector (or tv). I am glad i waited until prices started coming down. . Color saturation, resolution, and hdr are beautiful from this projector to a 90" screen.

Q. Lara, Gloucestershire

This is a truly great projector, but getting the most out of it takes some planning and additional expense. . I purchased this through visual apex, because of stock issues with online store. Va is an online store merchant, so at least there's that. We purchased this to replace an aging benq w1070. . The projector is a little larger than expected, but size is not really an issue, and is clearly listed in the spec sheet. I ceiling mounted this with the optoma ocm818w-ru mount, and mounting the projector only took a little effort. I highly recommend the optoma mount. It is more expensive, but sturdy. It is much smaller than it seems in the picture. Mounting the projector only took minutes. The top cover on the projector is a bit flimsy and not up to the standards of a $2k item. Fit and finish here could be better. . I had read a bit about hdmi cables and the need to buy "good" ones for 4k, hdcp, etc. , etc. I also read many articles claiming that hdmi is hdmi and any high speed cable will do. . My issue was a 35 foot run from onkyo tx-rz800 to the projector. Our benq worked fine with a 50' cable at 1080p, but i was aware that length could be an issue with 4k. I had bought the highest quality reasonably priced (kolife) cable that was "high speed" rated, and said 4k, hdcp 2. 2, 18ghz, 24ga, 4k 60. I was using a sony ubp-x800 as the 4k source. I used the optoma-supplied "high speed" hdmi cable going from the sony to onkyo. While i was able to see a 4k signal, i couldn't do so reliably. There were picture artifacts, flashes, dropped signals, and general poor image quality. I ran the long hdmi cable directly to the sony and the issues got worse. So, the onkyo was actually helping things. I also tried a signal booster at either end of the long hdmi run. That didn't work, either. As it turns out, hdmi is a poor platform for 4k 60. But, that's what we have. . After doing some research and finding out that hdmi cables do matter very much when considering long runs and 4k 60, i bought the ruipro hdmi fiber cable 33 foot cable. The fiber optic solution fixed all signal drops, so we are in business. Any hdmi cable will not do the job, especially if you are going many feet. You absolutely need to spend the time to find the right solution to fit your budget and specific setup. Also remember that there is a difference in running 4k 60 vs 4k 30 or 24. You will experience more issues with inferior cables at the highest data rates. A cheap short cable may work for you, but absolutely did not for me. I highly recommend the fiber optic solution for long hdmi runs. The ruipro seems to have great reviews and it worked wonders for my setup. . As for the projector itself, setup was a breeze. The large amount of zoom will help you find optimal placement in your space. This projector lacks keystone adjustment, so you'll have to have the vertical placement figured out. It does provide (15%? ) vertical lens shift. The fan noise is moderate to low. I only notice it in a very quiet room. Even normal movie dialogue is enough to drown out the fan noise. . Images are stunning, to say the least! fantastic colors, good blacks in a dark room. Sharpness that is hard to find anywhere at this price. For $2k, you get as big a screen as you can handle at home in fabulous 4k. Really amazing! remember that this is a projector, though. It performs best in a darkened room, and will never be bright enough to compete against lots of ambient light. It is slightly brighter than the w1070. (3000 vs 2200 lumens). Movies, games, and tv are all great with this projector. I think the lag time is better than the benq, because everything seems more synchronized, and gaming is great! . . There are plenty of menu settings to play around with. I like ultra detail, but found that dynamic black seemed to add a little bit of noise to the image. The hdr setting seems to be the best (to my eye). . For me, this projector has a few minor drawbacks:. 1- no keystone adjustment, placement must be planned. At least there's some vertical lens shift. Not a huge deal, but keystone is nice. . 2- no 3d - for me this was no big whup. Our family decided 3d was more trouble than it was worth. Just be aware there's no 3d. . 3- limited to 8bit when running 4k 60. Must slow it down to 4k 24 or 30 to get 10bit and 12bit. Now, i'm no techie. I don't fully understand if this is a limitation of hdmi, the projector, or what. I have seen some color banding in some images (gradient sky, etc. ). I also don't know yet if this is cable related between the source and onkyo. (better cables ordered). I can just see that color banding improves some when the feed is limited to 4k 24 and have read that color banding could be related to color depth. Update: better cables helped some of the color banding issue and it is far less noticeable. . 4- this does not have an rgbrgb color wheel. It's rgbcy. For me, this makes the typical dlp rainbow effect a little more noticeable, but it does help provide the extra brightness. A tradeoff. I like the brighter image, so for me this is a good choice vs. The uhd65. . We have also added a 4k 60 roku ultra, and it is having the same signal drops using a 6ft "high speed 4k 2160p, 3d, 24awg, gold connector" cable (farstrider). Based on the above experience and experimenting with several cables, i know it's the cable, and have ordered replacements. Again, any cable won't do at 4k 60. The roku ultra is all 4k 60 all the time. I'll report back on the audioquest cables. . To sum up. This is a great projector, and is the best deal on the market today. It does have some minor limitations. Also know that 4k 60 is not exactly "plug-and-play. " you'll be buying some cables and doing some research. . Update: the addition of 1m audioquest forest cables solved the issue of signal drops with the roku ultra. Using the aq cables also seemed to improve the image coming from the sony ubp-x800. There seems to be less color banding and dynamic range artifacts. They seem to make a big difference, but it is hard to quantify. . Update again: after spending a month with this projector, i've decided that some of the image artifacts may relate to how the image was coded, as well as some of the conversions from sd to uhd. On the sony ubp800, sd up-conversion gets set to 4k 24. If the source is at a higher frame rate, it passes through. The roku ultra is all-4k 60 all the time, and there's no way to change the roku to a lower frame rate. Hence, there are still more image quality issues and dropped signals with the roku. It's just flaky. As soon as i can get hbo and starz on the sony, the roku goes away! image quality with the sony blu-ray is much better and much more reliable. There are still a few image artifacts that i can't explain, some slight color banding in some scenes, where other similar scenes are just fine. I'm beginning to believe it's mostly the fault of the source material? so far, the optoma is working like a champ. The projector is still not quite as nice as a good 4k lcd tv or oled, but the size! this is still the best option for affordable 4k in a size where 4k matters.

X. Rose, British Columbia says

Super clear, easy to install. Got it last night at 8pm, was up in about 2 hours. Replacing my old 1080p projector. So far, the quality is good, really good. Very very little rainbow effect compared to my last unit (asus model that i loved too). . This is big big big. Look at my picture. I heard a few reviews that it was big, but i thought perhaps a few inches here and there. This was almost absurdly big. When i saw the box come and it barely fit through my door, i was like 'wow, they over boxed this small projector. They didn't. I told the ups guy it's just a projector, not sure why they boxed it so big and why it weights 30 pounds. Lol. Because it is that big and heavy.

. Barbara, Poole

Best bang for your buck projector only thing i wish it had motorized cap for the lens. The black levels are very good but not exceptional. . But for the price the picture quality is really sweet ! a must buy if your budget is between 1500-2k on a projector.

W. Guest, Cambridgeshire says

When i received this it was fantastic great picture really bright and i was very impressed , now 2 months later the picture has dimmed considerably and i cannot get any help from optoma customer service, this is the most disappointing part. The bulb started having issues at only 300 hrs and is rated for 10, 000 hrs. I even tried to order a replacement bulb myself to fix it as optoma doesn't seem to care, the bulb is not in stock which leads me to believe they might have an issue if they cannot keep a std part in stock. As a fyi i waited a full 10 days of getting no response from them after they opened my issue ticket and my last contact from them , before writing this review, i wanted to give optoma a chance to fix this before i reviewed the product, i have emailed them back several times in the last 10 days to no avail. If its working it is amazing. * update - after writing this i was contacted by marty, who did a great job in resolving my issue and getting me a replacement bulb. With the new bulb everything was back to normal and the picture brightness issue was fixed. (thanks marty) i hope in the future the rest of the customer support staff can react like marty and not let a small issue turn into a large one. I am able to now run virtually all the time in eco mode again with a great , bright , picture even during the day.

R. Claudia, Worcestershire

Great truly 4k projector! however, it doesn't have any kind of horizontal keystone, so you must plan very careful it's placement. It could be a problem for some installations. . And is big. Mine barely fit on previous mount.

D. Franklin, North Tyneside says

I made the right choice. Yes the right choice. I have optoma hd27 which is 1080p projector and its excellent. Then i decided to upgrade to a 4k projector, after weeks of searching and studiying to choose the right one i have decided to go for optoma uhd60. I am very pleased with it, i use a 150" alr projector screen and i feel the optoma needs for more. The colors are vivid and bright. Well done optoma.

L. Edna, Rutland

I have been using 1080p projectors for the last couple of years. This projector is out of the world. You shall be blown away by the picture quality. Though i project on a wall it gave an amazing picture quality. Using it with chromecast ultra for now.

A. Brenda, Colorado says

I love the projector when it comes to 4k content especially uhd blu-ray. I had a jvc x500 which is a 1080p 4k e-shift projector and the jump in resolution is quite noticeable. The only complaint or question i have is about artifacts that i get when watching certain content. It looks like the photo attached. Anyone know what this is and what i can do to correct it?

H. Joanne, Kent

Great projector, not perfect but for the price/performance ratio it's awesome. We are 65% movies / 35% games, we zoom out for 2. 35:1 moves and manual lens shift, all works.

O. Julia, North Carolina says

Replaced a 1080 with this system hd projection screen. Based on my research , as of today this is the best option to get 3840x2160 . You must replace the wires, old av receiver and pc graphic adapter . For pc i used 1050 ti which is best , for avr , i use sony sony strdn1080 best option. Don't spend more than 10$ a wire for hdmi 2. 0 support.

S. Bertie, California says

Love this projector! the build quality is not nearly as bad as people say. It's is sturdy, heavy, and well-built. The image it throws onto the screen is amazing. I almost purchased a much more expensive ultra-short throw dell projector but when i asked the sales department where i could see one in person, the dell representative basically told me to take a hike. Which i did. To optoma, and 4k hdr bliss. Thank you dell for selling me an optoma! lol.

E. Parker, Wyoming

Got my uhd60 a few days ago from online store. Buyer from australia here. I m no pro reviewer, but thought i s share my thoughts here as it s pretty hard to get feedback on them at the moment. Cost was just under $3100 au from online store, inc import duties and expedited shipping. My last projector was epson 9100, which i am keeping for 3d playback. My set up is on a carson mechanised 110 inch screen, casting from 3. 6 meters. Feed content through panasonic uhd 900, ps4 pro, and chromecast ultra. I bought the uhd60 as i use projector not in a bat cave, but in a room which is fairly light controlled, but with some ambient light leakage. Also gaming is important, so the 60 was for me. Overall, extremely impressed with this unit. Though of course, not perfect. Regarding set up you must be able to align in absolute centre of screen, at either very close to the top, or bottom of the screen. You can only lens shift to 15 degrees, and only upwards if you are throwing from below, or only downwards if from ceiling mount. No power cord problems, uses standard pc power cord, so just use an aussie one. No voltage issues. As everyone has noted, unit build is a bit crappy / plastic but aesthetic i think is pretty good. All controls re lens are manual. Big tip important how you get content to it i re did my set up to have my pana uhd 900 close to the unit, as well as my ps4. So ididnt need to pay out hundreds for fibre hdmi leads. I also have the sammy uhd 8500, and that was useless compared to the quality and control i got out of the pana uhd 900 on the optoma. Night and day difference. Ps4 pro gaming works a treat, gets full hdr etc compatability in the video settings. Gaming in 4k is amazing on the optoma. Wipeout, horizon dawn, uncharted etc are just awesome, and lag is not an issue. However, video feeds from the ps4 are pretty crap, eg netflix, stan, plex. If you can , get your video feeds from a dedicated player, as i have said, especially the pana uhd 900. On that unit, netflix 4k / hdr looks fantastic. It doesn t have plex, so i use plex via chromecast ultra for 1080p files, which looks great, even though the hdmi 1. 4 port. Plex on the ps4 pro looked like arse. Seriously. Optoma upscales 1080p files and blurays like a treat. Very impressed. I have not professionally calibrated. Optoma resolution is just great, so happy with it. 4k really is razor sharp, of course, blacks could be better. But by no means a dealbreaker, depending on how fussy you are. Big tip use dynamic black it really works well. And be prepared to spend some time trawling the forums for getting tweaks for diff types of content re settings, it really helps. When you are experimenting, pay close attention to colour gamut, as well as gamma presets, they make a big difference. Hdr generally works surprisingly well. Especially with gaming, and my fave uhd discs, depending on the source material. Big tip here if on a uhd disc source, hdr looks dodgy strip hdr from the source player (pana does it) and get straight 4k out put. Solves a lot of problems. For example, the new prometheus uhd look great in full 4k / hdr better than i was even hoping for. But alien covenant seems they somehow screwed the hdr on that, so i strip the hdr from it, to just 4k output, and it looks fantastic. Overall, i am extremely impressed with this optoma. As has been well reported, if you don t care about gaming and want better blacks, go the uhd65. But either way for this amount of money compared to the competition, i reckon optoma have really hit it out of the park. I m planning on keeping it almost as a stop gap for a couple years, till someone makes a great 4k native player that also does great 3d, and does not cost over ten grand. Like i said, i m no expert, but hope this info has helped. Cheers

This projector has excellent brightness and with some tweaking good enough color accuracy, the only thing i wish could be better is its hdr compatibility though at this point is hard to know if the problem is the source or the projector or the software. Some source would enable hdr some other won't then a second try would work on both, etc. Fan noise is much better than any other projector with this brightness that i have seen, and of course the picture detail is very comparable with other high end projectors, not true 4k but very very close to the naked eye

I've used projection as my main source of media consumption for the past 10 years. I've logged over 600 lamp hours on the optoma uhd60 projector and i still catch myself saying "wow, look at that beautiful image". I love the optoma uhd60! the image quality is remarkable and very bright! i also purchased a high-end oled tv and compared content side-by-side from the same source (two xbox one x's). While the tv looked excellent, the projector performed as well in most scenarios or event better when it came to sports. Forza 7 looks a little better on the oled, but it, and all games, still look incredible on the projector. And the overall experience of watching movies, tv shows, sports and playing video games is better on the uhd60, imo. Even my wife who doesn't care about image quality and the latest electronics appreciates the beauty of the image this thing creates! even with some ambient light in the room, the projected image looks fantastic. I constantly have guests tell me they can't believe it's a projected image. Optoma did very well with this unit. With over 600 lamp hours logged, it still works brilliantly and impresses me! and upscaled blurays looks amazing! i purchased several 4k blurays and honestly can't tell the difference between the upscaled blurays and the 4k blurays. . A few things to note:. . - 1! make sure everything connected in your set up is 4k capable (i. E. Source device, av receiver, and cables). - use hdmi cables that are capable of 4k. I use the fusion 4k cables. - add an hdmi repeater for runs longer than 15-18 feet unless you're using ruipro fiber hdmi cables (they don't need it from what i've read, but cost a lot). My hdmi run is 31. 5 ft. I had to add an hdmi 4k repeater to boost the signal for the image to appear. It looks just like an hdmi connector (female on both ends) and doesn't use external power. Just connect the two 4k hdmi cables. Here is the repeater i have and prefer - it does take the projector about 10-30 seconds usually to find the signal. It may be faster with ruipro fiber hdmi cables, but i'm happy with my set up. - your 1080p only devices will need to be connected to the 1080p hdmi in on the projector. They won't work over the 4k hdmi in. Keep this in mind if you have several 1080p devices to connect in addition to 4k devices. You'll need two hdmi outs on your receiver. I only have one hdmi out on my receiver, but i only have one 1080p device (ps4) in my set up so i run it directly to the 1080p hdmi in on the projector and run an optical audio cable from the ps4 to my receiver. The other devices are 4k (xbox one x and apple tv 4k). I have a 1. 5 ft fusion 4k hdmi cable that runs out of my receiver hdmi out (which is also 4k/60p capable btw) runs directly from my receiver to the projector. . Hope this helps anyone considering the uhd60. I'd buy it again without hesitation.

I had a previous optoma -full hd so i m familiar with the brand . I read previously to buy it reviews , mainly projectorcentral. Com , and i already use it in a dark room , at 120 inch size screen , ceiling mounted , using streaming 4k material through nvidia shield - you tube & netflix . It is wonderful - in one word - and it is obviously quite an upgrade from the former model - for me it s a delight , a real treat ! . Extremely satisfied with this and i heartily recommend it !

Let me tell you my expectations were blown away. First i started off with xbox one s and the latest hdmi cable and the picture was amazing. Then when i started to play the game, there was virtually no visible lag, which was a huge plus to me. The speaker sounded ok, but really outside of maybe outside, i really find no use for it. Uhd and hdr looked incredible in movies as well. . What i didn t like about the projector is the zoom feature is mostly manual, it makes it really hard to put the lens on after you set it up. Adjusting the height of the lens is limited. Sharpness is very good, but if you are real close you there is some degradation in picture. . Price point, while seemingly $2000 is expensive it is worth it for what you get. I give it an 8 out of 10.

N. Medina, Nebraska says

I'm not an expert on projectors. I've owned 5 in the last 20+ years. I usually just trust reviews i read. I'm fairly happy with this one. . My biggest complaint is about the brightness. I project on a 150" screen. At that size, even in a dark room, the image isn't that bright. With even a little ambient light, the image gets washed out immediately. I bought this specifically so that i could project a large image (otherwise what is the point of 4k? ). So even though it's pretty good, it only gets 4 stars.

J. Nees, Oxfordshire

What a wonderful shocker! i thought it would be another couple of years waiting. Wait no more. Reasonable $ 4k uhd hdr is here, now, today. Go get it. Order it. It's a no-brainer. Christmas in june. "yes virginia, there is a santa claus! "

I don't know where to start! . . Our basement home theater is a 110" setup. We were using an epson 1080p projector and we were quite happy. Once i saw 4k pictures i needed to upgrade the ht set up. However, true 4k projectors and 4k dvd players were out of my budget. . Then comes along this optoma. I could not believe that there is a projector for $1799 claiming to be true 4k. I read and re-read all the industry reviews and decided to take a chance. . I am so glad i did! i have paired this with a silver ticket 11" screen, sony ubp-x700 4k dvd player and a sony str-dh790 receiver. . Simply put, the results are stunning! the clarity is superb. I have not encountered the dreaded rainbow effect so far. I have watched a lot of 4k material, blu-ray, youtube hdr videos, netflix & online store 4k content and i am blown away! . . Even the 1080 content from espn, cbs, nbc etc are upscaled beautifully. . This is a no frill projector that offers 4k content without breaking the bank. Be sure to read all of the reviews from home theater sites. . P. S. Make sure that you have a 4 mm metric allen wrench if you are going to mount this projector to the ceiling.

K. Wimbish, Hamburg

I am super excited to have a 4k project to watch movies with my family. The image quality is fantastic. I have this setup in my basement with blackout currents (so low ambient light). The project is super bright under those conditions. Setup took a bit to get the image right, but once i did i could not be happier.

T. Williams, Schleswig-Holstein says

This projector is great, but online store broke two of them in shipping. I exchanged the first one and online store shipped another broken one. On the second broken shipment, i rma'd to optoma and they provided a working one. . What happened was that online store put the optoma box in a slightly larger (8 inches on each side) box, but did not add any filler. As the projector box traveled across the country to my home, it was being jostled around inside that larger box. By the time it got to me, the color wheel had picked up a whining sound. . The rma'd version works great!

Z. Shirley, Lorraine

Wow! under $2000 for a 4k projector. I use this on our backyard theater with a screen that's 16ft by 10th. The picture is intense and the contrast is unbelievable. We showed john wick 2 last weekend and you could see the shadows in the shadows when he was in the catacombs. The audience was impressed. I realize that optoma did some tricks to get a 4k projector in this price range, but the results are spectacular.

. Wanda, Derbyshire says

The optoma is a great mid range home theater projector. I have been very happy with this device and has neatly finished off my home theater room. 4k and hdr on movies and gaming are superb. I just hope i don't have to upgrade soon to 8k!

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

Ordered this projector on 2/26/18, installed it a few weeks later. Since that time it has seldom been used as the room is not yet complete (wall coverings and furniture are just getting added) but today the lamp went out.

Shipping took a long time to process and my unit was defective on arrival. My projector makes a loud buzzing sound when turned on separate from the fan. Also my trigger port doesnt work, when the projector is turned on it doesnt activate my electronic projector screen. Online store is sending a replacement, they said the quickest i can get it is sat and i still dont see that the item is shipped so im thinking it will be monday. I played spider man on ps4 on the projector yesterday and the image quality is quite nice in a dark room. If the second unit has the same sound issue i will be returning and going with a different projector.

F. Guest, Alaska says

The first projector sent to us had a bad hdmi 2 port. Online store quickly sent us another one. The hdmi 2 port on the new one stopped working in less than 3 months so there is no 4k content. We cannot get a refund on online store because too much time has past. The return for repair policy with optima means that we will be without a projector for weeks during football season. I would not recommend buying this without a very long term warranty that gives you a replacement rather that having to wait for a repair. I regret this purchase.

J. Lindsey, Michigan

I purchased this projector in december 2017 to go in a home theater. My first impressions were underwhelming. It got worse. . First impressions: the unit is big, bigger than the images make them look and heavy. (i know the measurements are 19. 6" x 13" x 6"). Getting the thing mounted was a chore. I knew going into it that this projector has a very limited vertical lens shift range and no horizontal lens shift. And since there is no keystone adjustment, i could not get rid of the roughly 3" skew (my projector lens was about 1. 5" from center of the screen, 16' back). The black border of my screen captures the overage, but graphics that go across the screen are slightly tilted. Picture quality on a 1. 2 gain screen was not impressive see picture . Not even near the contrast and color clarity of a previous "3000 lumens" projector i had. Not sure how optima measures it's 3000, but it's lower than that for sure. . Using it: it has some internal process where if the video input is interrupted at all (like changing the channel on directv) has resync the hdmi signal, while it does it shows "searching for source" in the lower corner. This takes about 4-5 seconds. Super annoying to change the channel and have to wait on the projector for 4-5 seconds every time. . Getting worse: i installed it on december 29th for inaugural use on new year's eve. It worked fine, but 4 weeks after that initial use at about 10 hours per week problems really started. It now does not shut down when told to, instead the screen goes all jumbled. Sometimes it slices up the input image, other times it looks like white noise see picture . Occasionally, as we are watching a show, if we change the channel or fast forward on the directv dvr, the projector goes black. In all these cases, the projector is no longer responsive to any remote control commands and i have to get a ladder, climb up to unplug it from the power. . What makes it all so frustrating is that i was about 5 days too late for online store's return policy. Now i have to keep it and try to get it repaired/replaced by the manufacturer. Much rather have my money back! . . Save yourself the headache, either wait on 4k or buy a different manufacturer.

U. Matherly, Queensland says

This projector is not native 4k projector as dlp chip has physical resolution of 2716x1528 vs. 4k which defines 3840x2060. I am not sure why optoma advertises this project as native where it is not. Yes, it accepts 4k resolution video signal but what you see om screen is simulated 4k, not actual 4k. Interesting nowhere in product listing this is mentioned. Unfair practice, optoma.

. Lynette, Greenwich

Junk junk junk. Third optoma projector i have bought and 3rd one the hdmi ports have gone bad on. Yes i do use hdmi surge protection before you ask. I would not put an optoma product in my doghouse.

R. Cindy, York says

The picture looks great when it s working, the issue is that when there are bright objects the electronics digitizes the image and the result looks really blotchy. Like worse than dvd pixelation. Also on white images it often will cast a purple saturation haze. . Obviously this is a huge issue. To make the issue go away you have to turn off deep black and reduce the brilliant color setting. . Easy fix right? well if you adjust these settings so that the issues go away then your image is half as bright and not very full of color. . In the end. The brightness and color of this projector make it less useful than a 1080p projector even though there are more pixels it s not worth it if the pixels are dim and dull.

C. Jarvis, Missouri

First, i would like to say the seller is great and quickly provided a refund when my return was received. Besides the projector being faulty with color blotches on the left side, it just didn't nearly meet expectations. My epson 5030ub which is not 4k, produced a better picture and more brilliant color. If mount this on the ceiling, ensure you are can lower or raise it as it does not have a keystone adjustment. Maybe i got a lemon since it did have an issue with the left half of the screen.

. Allen, Derbyshire says

Based on many reviews, i had high expectations for this projector. After several hours of testing it's obvious the projector suffers from the same issues you'd expect from a cheap dlp projector. Despite some reviews diminishing the presence of rainbow effects, it is very present and quite noticeable on action footage. Also, the image has a very "watery" appearance as the pixels dance around like no other projector i've seen. It is very noticeable on stationary images such as photo or menus on a game console. These two issues were the deal breaker for me. It performs as well as a cheap 4k projector can. If you're debating 4k tv vs projector in this price range, go with a tv. As of this writing (8/2017) you wont find a native 4k lcd projector in this price range but you may be satisfied with one of the 4k 'enhanced' varieties which offer better color and contrast without the rainbow and water effects. You get what you pay for.

Z. Angelica, Utah

Picture quality is superb when correctly configured. Easy menu layout, this unit allows users to configure a variety of settings, could be intimidating to entry level owners. Biggest issue to me is the lack of keystone adjustment but i understand that would degrade the image. There are other minor glitches but no deal breakers. Would definitely recommend this unit. . Update : after 8 months of weekend use only the 4k hdcp 2. 2 port stopped working altogether. Reached out to optoma about warranty repairs their response was lukewarm, i was directed to fill out and submit an online form and told to expect a response within 24hrs. Going on 4 days now and nothing. I had high hopes for this brand and projector but i guess it was too good to be true. Online store was limited as to what they could do as i was out of my return window. So i'm left with a very expensive 1080p hd project. I'll update if optoma ever respond to my rma.

M. Carrie, New Mexico says

Purchase from online store oct 2017. April 2018 both hdmi stopped working. Sent back to optoma. Repaired and sent back to me. Two weeks later, had the same problems (no hdmi signal found). Sent back to optoma. Replaced with a refurbished unit! one week and a half hdmi 2 port stopped working, then three days later, the hdmi 1 port stopped working. Glad i purchased a four-year warranty. Looks like after spending $2000. 00 for the projector (optoma uhd60), i will spend the next four-years sending it in for repairs. I tried to put this review on optoma's web site and the projector people. Com website (who recommend this projector), but my comments has not been approved for their site? don't buy this projector. Biggggg disappointment.

L. Valdez, Portsmouth

Initially i thought this was a great deal. Then i realized i couldn't get my ps4 pro to play in 4k. I hooked everything up to my 4k sony curved t. V. And had no problem picking up 2160p; however, after trying everything in the menus of this optoma uhd60 there was absolutely no way i could get this thing to pick up 2160p on my ps4 pro. Unfortunately i didn't realize this in time to return it or otherwise i would have. This was soo disappointing. I don't know if i got a bad projector or the product description is just misleading. If i could take back my purchase i would but i didn't realize it in time. If anyone else is expecting to buy this to play video games in uhd like i was i would encourage you make sure it works properly before your return time frame is up.

O. Debra, Rhone-Alpes says

Not bad for the money but if you are serious about your 4k and are going over 115 spend the extra on a sony vplvw

G. Diana, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

I purchased this uhd 60 back in january. Picture quality excellent, at first . But after 6 months white dots began to appear on the screen, a week later picture quality on the edges appeared faded. About the same time 4k hdmi port stopped working. After spending close to $2000 dollars i expected more from optoma. This is my 3rd projector , the most expensive one i own, but the only one that broke down after only 6 months. Obviously i had to send it back to optoma for repairs, which i was not happy about.

Y. Taylor, Alaska says

Purchased this projector and experienced significant pixelation issues, specifically dancing/watery blue pixels on white/bright images. Multiple contacts with product support led to them replacing the unit via rma, only to have the exact same issue on the brand new unit. Delays through optoma's product support caused my refund period to expire, and so now i am stuck with a $2, 000 piece of garbage.

X. Gladys, Bath and North East Somerset

Just got this 4k projector about a week ago. A bit disappointed. When compared side by side to my panasonic hd pt-ae4000 projector, it's a tad better, just a tad. Going from dvd to blu-ray was a huge leap in quality, going from blu-ray to 4k is a marginal improvement, at least with this 4k projector. From just a visual cue up close, it's about a 15% better in quality in 4k vs in blu-ray (tested using the divergent movie in bluray and uhd 4k versions). Technically speaking it should be 400% better in quality. Also, not all hdmi will work. Regular hdmi is only good for 4k 30fps (hdmi port 1). This projector can handle 4k 60fps (hdmi port 2). When the picture didn't show up, it got me worried for a second. So yeah, it's better than what i had, but if you have the pt-ae4000 already, i would not recommend buying this just for 4k. I connect to the uhd60 from my 1080 gtx graphics card (on the pc) via hdmi that came with the projector (to port hdmi 2) and it works just fine. 4k looks noticeably different from 1080 on the computer monitor, but not so on the uhd60. It's more accurate to call it a really good hd projector instead of a 4k projector. Hdr is a gimmick, it overexposes the white by a lot, so i turn it off. The uhd60, even though it's 4k, is not good for texts. My 2560x1600 hp zr30w monitor has much crisper texts. 4k youtube videos on the uhd60 vs 1080 youtube videos on the pt-ae4000 is virtually indistinguishable from one another at 20ft away. Does this mean i will use the pt-ae4000 instead? no. The uhd60 is now my primary projector.

E. Sarah, Wigan says

I don't see how optoma can claim this product as a "home theater" projector. . After i purchased this and spent money getting it installed we found out that this projector does not support keystone feature. This is a basic feature that a home theater projector must have. . Don't purchase this unit.

. Anonymous, North Dakota

The image looked good but i ended up trying a numerous amount of hdmi 2. 0 cables at various distances to try and get the projector to not cut out once or twice an hour. I tried active cables and even shortened the distance to only 6ft and it would still lose the signal and take awhile to get it back. Ultimately, i returned this projector and i will never buy optoma again. If i'm spending $2, 000 on a projector it should work perfectly.

S. Brenda, Alabama says

I bought this projector less than a year ago and the hdmi inputs have already gone out on me. It has a two year warranty, yes, and it covers the hdmi ports. After confirming the hdmi ports were indeed covered under the warranty i have yet to hear back from optoma about how they plan on fixing the problem. After multiple emails and calls with no results i have decided to leave this feedback. Maybe if their sales are affected they will start taking better care of their existing customers.

A. Nancy, Tennessee

Very, very excited to get this product having had 2 previous projectors and been amazed at both of them. Having said that, i got a lemon here. When watching any movies, the video would cut out anywhere from 3-4x during the movie for up to 3-5 minutes before i got up and had to reset all the hdmi cables. I have now purchased 3 seperate "certified 4k" cables ranging anywhere from $5 dollars all the way up to $70 and every one of them has the same problem. Upon having my issues, i googled the issue and read some reviews here and found others having the same problem. Some members over on the large avs forum are having the same issues and some have corrected it with a hard reset on the hdmi port 2 on the projector, however it does not work with mine. . $2 grand may not be a lot to some people, but i am very discouraged and disappointed with this purchase. Very glad online store will take it back and i will look at a different company for a projector. Entire year of excitement looking forward to this product and it all came crashing down within the first 2 hours. There are a lot of satisfied users out there. If you buy this product i hope you are one of them and dont have my misfortune, as i have wanted this projector for a long time.

W. Dorothy, Knowsley says

The picture on this projector was very inconsistent. It would look great when streaming a video, but then be completely off for a video game. Picture had to be adjusted every time it was used. However, when it worked, it looked awesome.

T. Olga, Newham

So it is great however you can t adjust keystone which for this amount of money you should be able to.

K. June, District of Columbia says

Update. After reviews for the benq ht2250 and optoma uhd50 have started showing up, i guess i'm a little more happy with the uhd60. I'm not going to spend 5000-15000 on a sony 4k when i've seen reviews that picture quality is no better. So i will keep this projector for awhile and in a year or two will upgrade when technology for 4k projectors becomes the standard. Also i have somewhat fixed my brightness/greyed widescreen boarders. I went into color setting and changed rgb from auto to rgb 16-235. Now when a dark scene comes on i can t tell where the image stops and the widescreen boarders start. Tweaked a few other settings and turned the brightness back up some and things look a lot better now. I m definitely not distracted like i was before with the widescreen movies but. Now playing anything in 4k hdr is unwatchable as the screen is yellowed. Again i have to keep switching setting for my liking. I m running most everything off me htpc so i think it has something to do with the projector thinking it s a monitor or the htpc thinking the projector is a monitor, this is still annoying. . I bought this projector when it first came out like back in july 2017. After 7 months of viewing this projector i think i jumped the gun and i should have waited till other companies besides jvc released "affordable" 4k. That being said i think i can finally write this review knowing what this projector can and can't do. First off, the cons. The projector is huge and really cheaply made. Almost like they tried to rush things to get ahead of the game. The remote which i don't use is just like all the other optoma remotes to bright (i use my neeo remote, don't pay attention to bad reviews on it it works great for me and replaced my harmony). No keystone correction, not a deal breaker for my setup but would have been nice to have. Black levels are not great, actually not that good either. Sdr-hdr is a joke, don't plan on watching anything in that mode. Actual hdr embedded uhdblurays is pretty good though. There is some bad pixelation issues on certain content, mainly with white objects or blue, like watching clouds and sky. I'm not sure what is causing that issue. When not viewing hdr movies. The black borders on blurays (widescreen) are grey at normal brightness. I had to lower the brightness to get them to even out or go black with the picture. So you have to switch your settings all the time (lame). It doesn't seem i can find a happy brightness setting for different content. Now for the really bad, there is a terrible handshake issue with the hdmi ports on this thing. Sometimes just out of the blue the image goes off for 30 seconds to a minute and searches for signal then comes back on. I'm not sure why it does this. Others have stated the same thing. I'm using the 35ft ruipro hdmi cable (yes the 170. 00 cable) forget about using the cheap cables that state 4k, they won't work. I have actually tried several cables and tried 3 of the ruipro (one became defective after 30 days). I have hooked my 4k tv up with the ruipro cable and my setup and it doesn't do it. So i know it's on the projector end. It rarely does then while watching a movie on my htpc. Mainly does it while switching content from internet, desktop etc. Has not done it with 1080p content from directv or xbox one. Just the media center running 2160p native. One thing i'm really upset about is no 3d, yes i still watch 3d. Only in my theater room though. 3d is not the same on 135" as it is on your 60" tv. So i was disappointed when it didn't have it. I knew this going into though. . Pros, and there aren't a whole lot now that "4k" projectors are starting to hit the market. The picture quality, aside from the pixelation issue that doesn't always appear the 4k hdr and 1080p image is outstanding in most cases. Not all 4k movies are shot the same way and same with 1080p. Transformers 2, dunkirk, the dark knight, look great. Baby driver, terminator 2 look horrible and a few others i can't think of right now. Like i said given the right source this projector shines. The projector is very quite, almost can't even hear it. Brightness level is great especially in my completely blacked out room (no windows). At the time the price point was a pro, now that its only 1500 and change it's really not that good of a deal. I am seriously thinking about trying the new benq ht2550, mainly because it has 3d. Yes that's sad to say i want to spend another 1500 but i have a ton of 3d movies i'm not able to watch now, my previous projector was the w1070 and i loved it. For the price point and features the uhd60 has i'd go toward the benq. I'm waiting on more reviews of it before i decide what i'm doing with this with this projector. So yes i'm pleased with the picture itself (most of the time) not happy about a lot of things. Maybe i'm being to picky, hope the reviews for the benq start showing up soon.

D. Cageen, Minnesota

On the positive, the 4k picture did look slightly sharper than my previous 1080p projector. However that was the only improvement after "upgrading" from my epson home cinema 2500. The colors were very grainy or splotchy on the whites and blacks. Also, the blacks were not as deep as i was hoping for. I understand that this is not a high end 4k projector so maybe my expectations were higher than they should have been. I purchased several expensive hdmi cables and 2 different 4k dvd players and tried different combinations to improve the picture quality, but to no avail. On top of that, i noticed significantly more motion blur from what i was used to with my epson. My overall opinion is i paid $600 more for a projector that had a frustratingly inferior picture. I will be returning.

V. Barbara, Hillingdon says

Product has faulty hdmi connectors and does not work properly. Now have to send back to optoma as seller will not help. As i was waiting on the movie room built-ins to finish, was not in the 30 day window for returns. Last optoma product was great, this one was twice as much and flickers/flashes.

N. Sally, Coventry

Don't get me wrong this is a beautiful picture, great quality, but the fact that it doesn't have keystone correction is terrible. I have my setup mounted on the roof and it would have to be mounted at head hight to fit the screen. I literally installed it, tried to set it up, and then returned it. I then bought a benq one that is the same quality with this functionality.

B. Stacey, Nottinghamshire says

This projector gives a decent hd picture, not a good 4k picture. . There is basically zero lens correction and i had this sitting on a flat surface lined up to point directly at the center of my 135" screen (directly under my epson 5030) and it would not fill the screen. . I also had to nearly face it at the floor to get it to project on to the screen. . As a professional av & low voltage installed/company owner i recommed you do not buy this. . Purchase an epson 5030 or 5040 and you will be extremely happy
