Purple Surveillance Hard Disk Drive (Western Digital) 2570

Review for wd purple surveillance hard disk

Price was $189.99. I'm using this in my hikvision surveillance system. So far so good. Plugged two of them in and fired up the machine. Set it to initialize them and they've been working ever since. Just what i needed. . Remember, if you are using hard drives for surveillance systems, you will need to get something like this which is specifically designed for constant write access. If you want one for your computer, this isn't needed. Just get a regular one.

Wd Purple 6tb Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 Rpm Class Sata 6 Gb/s 128mb Cache 3.5 Inch - Wd60purz Review (wd60purz)

First of all, i knew from the start that i was going to buy a wd drive. Of my past 30 consumer grade hard drives, all of my wd drives lasted until i decided to take them out of service for larger drives. This compared to the two hitachi and two seagate drives that either developed bad sectors or component level failures. . It was really a toss up between wd red and wd purple for me. I wanted to try the new drive out and have been pleased thus far. One key factors in my choice to purchase this drive was that it supported tler. I don't currently have it in a raid, but i didn't want to limit myself. . Gary e peterson said it best in his wd red review explaining tler, "time limited error recovery - where the hard drive assumes it is part of an array, assumes there is redundancy, and is not afraid to quickly tell the host controller that it just can't complete the current i/o request. ". . Both wd red and purple have tler. They both have 3 year warranty. Red has a listed mtbf of 1, 000, 000 hours and purple is not listed. Purple is rated for 300, 000 load/unload cycles vs red's 600, 000 cycles. Purple edges out red in noise, 26 dba vs 28 dba while seeking. . This drive is very new to the market and my drive bay. :-) i will update my review after a while of using the hard drive. -R. Colleen

PROS
  • Purchased this for my new ip security camera system and opted to save some money and install my own hard drive instead of having the distributor install it. I contacted the distributor to find out which drives they recommend and without hesitation they said they only use wd purple drives for their installs so ordering this was a no brainer. Online store's price was pretty much the same as others but i'm so glad i got this from online store. When my drive arrived (packaged very well) i could not get my system to boot up. After some testing i could see that the bios would recognize the drive but it would fail to initialize and would report an error. Online store's rma process is the best. They immediately sent me a replacement and shipping label to return the bad drive. The replacement installed perfectly with no problems. I'm only a couple days into this drive but it works and hopefully the specialized specs will allow it to run cooler, longer, and more reliably store the video data. Unfortunately, i won't really be able to give a proper review until i've had it running for a really long time after going through several overwrite cycles and scouring through video feeds looking for errors. I'll update if i have any problems with the drive but otherwise you can assume that drive is working out perfectly for me.
  • Been running 3 months now and no problems. I'm glad i spent the few extra bucks and went with the purple one because i was told by my it guy that the purple wd hard drives are intended for security camera hard drives, since they run 24/7. Great purchase, so far.
CONS
  • Not sure why but after a month of use the disk is making a loud humming sound. It was right around the time it filled up with recorded video from my nvr. I am guessing it is going to fail soon.
  • Had for about 3 months before it went back however western digital was great with there warranty ! and send me a brand new one in two days
  • Defective, had it in my dvr, it had issues. Sent dvr to get tested. Was determined hard drive faliure

I have purchased several of these. I have not had one fail yet. The are twice the storage i could get just a few years ago and half the price. Just remember that if you are running a 32 bit os on your dvr you can only use 2 tb of the storage space.

(0) Question: Hoq long can u record on a 1 tb hard drive contiusley

(1) Question: Can i use this on my lorex eco 2 dvr?

(2) Question: Can the wd purple (non nv) work in a nvr? why 2 different types of purple?

The only realistic complaint i have is the native dos like interface. It's not real intuitive but it serves it's purpose (thus far). It works well with it's branded (amcrest) cameras, appears to work fine with my dahua camera but simply won't work with my hikvision (which is apparently not following the onvif standard interface); this will be a pricey throwaway. It would have been nice if there was a manual configuration mechanism in the amcrest software that would permit me to code access but such is life; i'll live with and follow in the future with onvif 2. 4 compatible or better cameras. However, on the bright side, there is a desktop application that permits you to effectively bypass that dos looking native interface. If you have a large investment in cameras already, make sure they are onvif compatible before you invest in this nvr (or make the decision to upgrade to that compatibility. . *edit* the nvr is a specialized computer and the language it uses may not (especially in my case) be clearly understood. I need to correct my statement about not working with my hikvision camera. It does work! it's not perfect but the nvr displays, records motion and performs everything i needed it to do. I can always simply log into the camera directly and "configure" those odd elements if the need arises. I increased this rating from 4 to 5 stars and will not give demerits for that "dos" like interface; the demerit belongs to me for not "thinking" clearly while reading the instructions. For those that use any non-amcrest cameras on their system, if your camera says it's onvif compatible, select that name (onvif) from the manufacturer's list when you manually add the camera; it's easy to miss and that choice registered my camera properly. Thanks. . * update *. After a month of activity, my system is working just fine. It took quite awhile for me to figure out how to "configure" the system to record events only. You can use desktop software to review those events stored on the nvr. You can also export those recordings in either the native format or avi. However, the avi format is very poor quality, at least in my situation. Fortunately, there is a viewer automatically downloaded with that export that will permit native format viewing but any 3rd party (e. G. Police) receiving that file may take exception to or be nervous about launching an unknown executable file; i know i was. . Finally, this product is highly technical and requires quite a lot of patience. If your experience is limited to opening emails and web sites, you may want to consider finding someone to help you set this up.

Amcrest Nv4108 Hs Network Recorder Built (Office Electronics) FAQ.

This review is posted across all the products in this system because this is a system review rather than just one of the pieces. . I purchased the bullet camera, in black, from a deal of the day to see if it would be a good candidate to replace my 7 year old lorex system. I have since purchased one dome (956) and two bullet (943) cameras in white, along with their 4108 nvr. My application is for outdoor use only to monitor my property. I like them enough to replace my 640x480 wireless lorex system that had a dvr and three cameras. Going from 640x480 to 2304x1296 is a gain of about 9x in number of pixels. The colors from amcrest is more saturated and is adjustable but i've left them as they came. . These are the things i don't like about amcrest:. 1. Setting up the cameras is always a lesson in frustration and it may be partly my fault since i keep thinking i need to use the password i want to use instead of the default first. I always start with ethernet configuration but the wifi name never seem to be listed. So i switch back and forth between ethernet and wifi configuration until i get to work with ethernet. 2. Lack of clear documentation sucks. Plain and simple. This leads to most of the things i don't like about the system. 3. The event/motion setup on the android mobile app setup is confusing. The meaning of the icons is not obvious. The "hand" one doesn't seem to do anything. So i just use the pc or mac surveillance pro program or the the nvr setup instead which gives me four mask settings. 4. The interface between platforms isn't in sync. A. There is limited functionality in the mobile app as compared to the programs and nvr interface. B. Rotation of the camera view on the mobile app is a nightmare with its confusing icons. Clear in surveillance pro on the pc. Clear via the nvr interface. Missing on the mac. C. Night vision enable/disable is clear on the app but does not seem to be available in surveillance pro on the pc or mac. It's available on the nvr but is more complicated. D. Main video stream disable/enable is only available on the mobile app. , but for some reason while setting the video stream parameters on the mac, one of my cameras' main video stream was disabled. I only found out that was the problem using the mobile app because i can connected to the camera but get no video on the nvr, which defaults to the main video stream while the mobile app defaults to the substream video and i get video on the app but not the nvr! . E. Because my purpose is for outdoor applications, the motion event blocks are too large. I wish they were smaller. So my threshold setting is low, 1 - 4 most of the time, depending on how close i want to trigger a motion event. 5. On the dome camera, because there is the dome, car or street lights create a streak in the image. Headlights will set off a motion event. 6. On the dome camera, limited angle adjustment vs. The bullet camera. I mounted mine upside down on a horizontal surface so the angle will only give me so much sky because of this limitation. Your mileage may vary depending on how it's mounted. 7. No mobile, 2. 5", hard drive mounting capability in the nvr. 8. Event viewing is a bit clunky across all platforms. Worst via the nvr interface. But i've learned to deal with it. If there are any glitches in the playback, it's in how it was recorded, not the device's fault. Verified it when i extracted the video and played it on the pc. 9. Selecting the camera to view as the main screen during playback on the mobile app can be challenging. Must be the sensitivity of the app. This affects the bottom disappearing menu that doesn't seem to have a clear way to display in landscape mode once it goes away. All i do is turn the phone to portrait to get it back before rotating the phone back to landscape. . No system is perfect but i love my new amcrest system. The one problem i had initially was with the mobile app but it turned out it was caused by the crowded 2. 4 ghz channel my router was using. Whenever i added a camera, the app would only connect to the latest camera. Very frustrating. When i was away, like at work, i couldn't connect up to any cameras. So with a free network analyzer app, i found that in my house channels 1, 6, and 11 were the crowded channels. After setting my router to use channel 3, all my connection issues went away and have been perfect ever since for over a week. . These are the things i love about amcrest:. 1. Storage of recordings the way i want. On microsd or nvr, or both. My number two on the list. 2. Files storage is very efficient. Over ten days with four cameras, it's used 29 gb of space with aggressive motion detection. I have a 160 gb mobile hard drive in the nvr. I won't need to purchase terabyte hard drives for this application. I use mobile hard drives because they are quieter than desktop hard drives. 3. High resolution. Much higher than my lorex cameras. 4. Clear, saturated color picture. 5. Ip67 with all the o-rings and gaskets included. The one for the antenna is to got outside on the male end rather than inside the female end. But i've used it in the female end just fine. I also use silicone tape to make sure everything is water tight. 6. Wide view at 100 degrees, much wider than my old lorex, which was less than 60 degrees, i believe. 7. Ease of mounting. Dome camera came with a template. Bullet camera is all connected as one. 8. Reasonable price. They are about half the price as my old lorex cameras which were prone to disconnection. No disconnections or resets have been required thus far. 9. Cameras can be set up to auto sync for time at an interval of your choosing. Same with the nvr. 10. Cameras can set set up to automatically change for daylight saving. Same with the nvr. 11. Auto-maintenance to reset the the cameras at an interval of your choosing. Same with the nvr. 12. Auto-maintenance to delete files at an interval of your choosing. Same with the nvr. I set mine to delete after 30 days. 13. Customizable almost everything like bit rate and frame rate, video flip, mirror, and rotate, color saturation, night mode auto or off, color or black and white. Hard wire ethernet or wireless. Naming of the channels, though it's a little obscure and one field is local to the application used rather than a global setting. Again, documentation will go a long way in understanding how that actually works. 14. Although playback is a bit clunky, it's much better than my old lorex system which was in list format over multiple pages. This is in a timeline format much like you'd see with the nest but not as easy to select. 15. Not affected by the brightness of the sun. My old lorex camera would go on the fritz just with the sun reflecting off the lawn, with most of the picture showing solid blocks of color, triggering motion events continuously. It was worst with snow on the ground. 16. Solidly built cameras. Feels very high quality. 17. Most importantly, it's reliable. Every morning when i turn on the monitor, there are my four cameras working with synchronized time. . I have a four camera system because i liked the cameras and picture quality so much. With the lorex, three cameras was all i could put up with. Plus, they were expensive. It was a "good enough" system. Now i have a great system that's pleasing to view at a great price point. -Notice from V. Colleen, Kentucky

Been using this for quite some time and it works very well. Have 2 hardwired and one wifi camera (more on the way) and not a hiccup out of it. Nice capture and playback. Would highly recommend.

- F. DorineHave installed multiple different models and this is the best performing yet. . Hard drive installation is straight forward, just remove the screws to open the case, plugin the cable, use the provided screws to mount the hard drive into the case, close it up and you're done, then simply plug it into power and network. . I love this model specifically because i can put this nvr anywhere as long as it has network access. With the integrated poe models, you need to put it wherever the cabling to your camera's terminate so they can plug directly into it. With this model, you plug your cameras into a poe switch on your network and then you can plugin the nvr anywhere else on your network. This makes have a usable dedicated live feed monitor very easy and conveniently placed. . Configuration is simple via the web interface. Make sure you use internet explorer. Can't emphasize this enough, this unit will not play nicely with edge, chrome, firefox, etc. Need to use ie for the web to operate properly.

All cams recording viewing on tv and phone great support from jeremy of amcrest tech support,

Amcrest UltraHD Outdoor 4-Megapixel PoE Vandal Dome IP Security Camera - MicroSD Storage, IP67 Weatherproof, IK10 Vandal-Proof, 4MP 2688 TVL , IP4M-1028E White

The amcrest prohd 4 mp poe bullet camera is a rebranded version of a camera manufactured by dahua technology (based in china). Dahua makes some great hardware, but they seem to have little inclination to support their products after they sell them. Amcrest provides that missing support, and also provides a cloud service for people who don't want to hassle with a dvr or computer to save the video. In addition, amcrest provides firmware updates (best of luck getting those from dahua). I have already downloaded and installed one firmware update for this camera. . The web-based interface is well designed overall. Not every feature is documented, but you can figure out most of the important settings on your own fairly quickly. At maximum resolution of 2688 x 1520 pixels, video quality in both daytime and nighttime is excellent (see the attached photos). There's a little distortion along the edges, but for the price i have no complaints. . One thing i do recommend - if you're going to buy this camera (and you'll probably wind up buying more than one), set up a computer running blue iris or security spy to record the video locally for maximum quality. Most dvrs and nvrs will downsample the image, resulting in loss of image quality, while amcrest's cloud service requires a monthly service fee. Bite the bullet and set up your own home video recording computer system, which will also let you monitor your cameras via a smartphone. . My only complaint about this camera is that amcrest ships them with a default 3. 6 mm focal length lens, which results in some "wasted" pixels due to too wide an angle of capture when you're trying to record from a distance. This camera can accept up to a 6 mm lens, and it would be nice if amcrest sold these cameras with an option for higher focal length lenses, or at least sold the lenses with instructions on how to replace them.

The amcrest prohd 4 megapixel poe vandal dome video camera helps you stay in touch with what you love anytime, anywhere. Amcrest cameras also record and upload to an ftp as well as record to any amcrest (or onvif compliant) network video recorder (nvr) (not included). This amcrest camera features heavy duty ip67 metal housing, night vision, enhanced digital zoom, a 118º viewing angle, smart motion alerts, email alerts and snapshots, advanced recording options, and secure ssl/ connection. Awesome camera for the price. I ended up moving my similar hikvision to the back since the quality of this deserved to monitor the front of the house. One major difference was the low light images. This camera had much better night time recordings than the similar hikvision. I would purchase again!

- S. LindaI've been using these cameras for a while now. I have to say i've had several other brands, but these have the best picture i've seen yet out of any camera i've tried. The camera itself is just as pictured, it is a well-built unit that only has the cord coming out of the base, there is no sound or wireless. I use mine with poe directly from my network switch, and use blue iris to manage their video streams. To set them up i use an older copy of firefox to set the camera parameters, and then after that connect them to my blue iris server. I'm waiting to see how they fare in winter weather, where i live can get very cold so will update this review after another 5 months or so. If i had one suggestion, it would be to move the cord channel in the base so it points downward, not up. Ceiling mounting this is not a concern, but on wall mounting it does seem like it is the wrong way. I've had operational issues with several of the units i've purchased, but i contacted amcrest and they sent replacements quickly. Great customer service!

I bought the 2megapixel camera set with 4 cameras and the dvr and it is ok, but when it comes down to pixels are everything when you are trying to make out a license plate. This camera has great clarity during the day but at night it isn't much better than the 2megapixel camera. I do like the poe system much more, but just beware you need to get an ethernet booster which gives the camera power. I bought all the tools to make my own ethernet cable ends which makes everything clean. If you do decide to make your own cables make sure you buy a tester to make sure you got it right. It is easy to not get a good connection when crimping ends. The software couldn't have been easier to get it to work on my pc, phone or cloud. I do witch amcrest would come out with a zoom or a camera that has a higher range. You can read a plate from about 50 ft with this camera (during the day). I am really happy with the cloud service, but it is kind of expensive considering 2 cameras is about the same price and a security system service.

Great product. I've never installed or used a security camera system before, but this system went together flawlessly. I used this nvr with amcrest 1080p poe dome cameras. Poe's one cable design made planning and installation simple. Everything worked right out of the box. Would highly recommend this product and amcrest cameras.

- H. RosePurchased this unit to upgrade a smaller capacity nvr for a customer and t works great with the existing hardware. The customer chose to install a 6 tb hard drive on it which is more than necessary for an 8 camera configuration. It came with all the necessary hardware to do the installation including the cables for the hard drive.

This is a great unit and works like a charm. Very easy to setup and use. Software and interface it uses is pretty decent and doesn't feel clunky or cheap. Easy to setup with a router to get multiple wifi cameras or wired cameras using ethernet cables. The only thing that could make this better is a built in rack for the hard drive with a simple fan, or multiple drives. As it is the hard drive just rests on the back plate held in by screws as most units do. Shouldn't be a problem if your using purple wd drives as the heat doesn't build up as much with those hard drives as others do which would cause the drive to potentially burn out by overheating.

Some of the cameras i have recording on it do not successfully execute smartscan functionality of motion detection on the playback. Some cameras will not retrieve the configuration file when setting them up for motion detection. During playback if you click stop, the file resets back to the begin of the time frame and does not save the time location you are at

Amcrest Nv2108e 8 Channel Network Recorder (Surveilance Systems) FAQ.

The manual is very detailed and helpful. It seems to be a little over the top for a non techy user. It requires alot of set up, which is wear i got stuck. I could not get access remotely from my devices, i can only get it to show on the pc. I wanted to be able to get access when i am not home, however i failed i the setup somewhere. . The quality seems good. I just am a nub at technology. I would recommend this and buy it again. I just wish it was a bit easier to walk through the setup. -Notice from A. Hurst, South Dakota

Extremely satisfied with the capabilities of this nvr. While the software suite provided needs ongoing attention and improvement, it is robust at this price point. It's currently handling 4 poe cameras and 9 wifi sets with ease. We returned a smaller 8 channel wifi unit from the same manufacturer (different vendor) as it was unstable when we loaded 6-7 wifi 1080 cameras so we are very pleased with this configuration and capacity. Personal wish would be the ability to use a usb keyboard along with the mouse. We configure a number of things through the web ui as a result. Not terrible, just a desire to be able to use a keyboard directly. Now rack-mounted and happily humming away in the network closet awaiting more cameras.

The F.A.Q. for wd purple 6tb surveillance hard disk drive - 5400 rpm class sata 6 gb/s 128mb cache 3.5 inch - wd60purz

I have this in a dvr connected to four surveillance cameras. They aren't hd cameras so using this hard drive gets me over a month of storage before having to make room for new recordings. . I previously used a couple old hard drives i had laying around. They both starting having lots of problems before too long, like losing recordings because i had to reformat the drive over and over again. That led me to searching for a drive made specifically for constant use. I've had this for about six months and so far no problems whatsoever.

A number of questions have been asked here.

I needed to upgrade my tivo hard drive and after doing some research i decided on a survelillance drive as it is made for large video files and is made for fairly continuous operation. With 3tb of space i don't have to worry about shows being deleted. I can save all episodes of futurama and other favorites. Drive seems quiet and after a couple of months, i have had zero issues. So far so good.

I purchased this drive to go with my new netgear centria n900 dual band gigabit wireless router with 3. 5" storage bay (wndr4700). I have this set up as an internal wireless lan at my home and store all my video and music content on this drive. With the n900 wireless this does for me more than any dvr out there can since i can access it from any device in my house including my desktop. Great combination. My plan is to add in a couple wireless surveillance cameras to the setup in the near future, and i expect it to continue to work just as good for that purpose as it does for my multimedia streaming.

Before reading any review read this: there is a key problem with the way this section is set up. For some reason it lists a very old (2014) model of this drive along with the same new generation improved model. What makes that bad is that the user comments are both mixed together, so any problems with the original drive appear right on top of the list and may be misleading. It s very important then to look at the tiny print at the top of each comment and see if the user is talking about the old generation style or the new generation style. To be clear, i am talking about the improved new generation style. . If you are not already familiar with the difference between a general purpose hard drive and one designed for video security let me start with a very basic comparison. This comparison is very broad and not a textbook definition by any means. . How it works. . Computers write and read their information to a hard drive in tiny chunks that are scattered randomly all over the disk, so the recording/playback heads are constantly jumping from place to place. Speed of access in a computer is extremely important. On the other hand video surveillance recorders write and read their information more like an old-fashioned tape recorder, pretty much just like what the cameras are seeing in real time. The recording/playback heads are only required to jump to another spot on the disk when you want to play back an event. So random-access search time is far less of a priority than the non-stop grunt work of recording dependably 24/7/365 without a hiccup. The two processes are entirely different job tasks. . Comparison: brand a vs. Brand b. . There are two major brands of specialized video surveillance hard drives. My nvr is one of the most respected out there for users who have a lot of experience and they chose to use the other brand of hard drive. Kudos to them because many other video security manufacturers believe you ll never know what s inside so they install the cheapest no-name generic hard drive they can buy. I ve been buying this brand of security system for years and have been very happy with it and when i wanted to increase my drive capacity from 2tb to 4tb i had no idea if switching to a wd brand drive would make any difference at all. Engineers told me that the two brands are not identical in their design philosophy, each brand considering certain design parameters to be the slightly better way to go. . Is there a difference. . Because the nvr software, firmware and other factors play at least as much of a role in performance as the hard drive i was looking to improve these things:. . 1. Drive noise. 2. Drive heat. 3. Stuttering (when the image suddenly jumps or drops a few frames, usually on playback). . I measured the operating temperature both drives in real-life use in identical conditions using a precision instrument. The original drive was operating at 97. 7 f and the wd measured at 91. 6 f. That 6 degree difference is significant but not substantial. . Likewise i used a calibrated sound level meter for each drive. The original drive came in at 47 dba. The wd was at 46. 9 dba, virtually identical. . The last condition is more difficult to quantify because stuttering is sporadic, so in my opinion i would classify any differences in a typical use scenario as atypical, was i experiencing fewer or more instances of stuttering or about the same? i tried to make my comparison without prejudice for or against either brand because i really don t care whose name is on it. I bought the wd primarily to double my recording capacity and hence the number of days it would record events. That being said in real-life everyday use i have to lean slightly toward the wd as having fewer instances of jumping, stuttering or frame dropping in my particular system and it does seem to handle a few second backspace more smoothly than the original drive. Maybe another way of putting it is that the wd seems to be playing nicer with the nvr s software/firmware than the brand the manufacturer originally spec d. . Will it improve my security system. . The short answer is not really. Any differences in operating temperature and noise level are too close to be significant and both brands are optimized for video security so abnormalities like stuttering are just that, and are not completely attributable to the hard drive. We can say categorically that the brand or type of hard drive you use will not improve the image resolution (picture quality) of your system. . Bottom line satisfaction. . All things considered the wd is consistently a few bucks more than the other brand and i m not a big fan of ever paying more if i don t have to. So based on the few things i could measure and one that i could only perceive i have to say i do like this drive and i believe i made the right choice.

F. Shawna, Wirral

I purchased this drive to supplement my amcrest nvr and 4 camera setup. The drive installed in perfect condition and was simple to install. The packaging was retail quality and i've had the drive recording my cctv setup for the past 3 weeks with absolutely no issues. The drive seems to keep up with all of my camera feeds and playback is as good as i had hoped. I would definitely recommend this disk drive to anyone installing their own cctv system.

A. Cageen, Saskatchewan says

As a drive for a simple analog dvr, the 2tb model might have been a little mismatched. With 4 cameras, 1000tvl, it uses maybe half of that at most, on a month with lots of motion detection. The surveillance aspect of it helps those events run smoother too (compared to a regular desktop hdd). . We plan to load a nas with these next, to mirror the footage remotely. Right now, this device is in that analog dvr system, and it watches our company doors 24/7. Have not had a problem with it yet. Very nice drive - and the recording seemed to improve along with playback after installing this version. . This is probably due to the spin up time, and that these drives are made to keep spinning at a low rate so that the device does not need to stop, the start up, then stop, and repeat over and over with recording. They are not optimized for pc, and i would not suggest one for a pc unless its a really amazing price, and you are limited on options. Their benefits show during cctv usage - like it says. Surveillance drives.

. Carolyn, South Carolina

This drive resolved an issue i was having on my media pc which runs my 6 security ip cameras 24/7 with motion, and, my 4 tuner centon cable card. That's a lot of concurrent i/o, and i previously experienced glitches in my cable recordings when shows would start and overlap. Or, during a recording when the cameras would detect motion and go bonkers writing all the motion along with the 6 24/7 recordings, and, whatever tuner recording! . . Now, there are no glitches. It's true what wd claims about it being able to support up to 32 cameras. I suspect they designed the caching algorithms to support 32 channels being written simultaneously. Each must have it's own buffer! . . The wd purple drive is an excellent choice for many simultaneous recording. Weither it be from security cameras, or tuner cards. It has worked great for me. I'm planning on getting 1 more larger drive.

X. Laura, New Brunswick says

I got this to increase my recording capacity for my directv dvr hr44/500 along with the anker usb 3. 0 & esata to sata external hard drive docking station the install was a breeze, just slide the wd purple hard drive into the anker or the docking station of your choosing, connect the esata cable from the anker/docking station to the directv dvr esata port (make sure dvr is turned off by unplugging it), turn on the anker/docking station, then plug in and turn on the directv dvr. You'll see the dvr find then format the new drive and you're all set. If you have any issues after you restart the dvr just press the small red button (reset button) located behind the small door on the front right side of the dvr hr44/500 where the access card slides in. This should fix any issues you may have so try this first before trying any thing else. Now enjoy the extra storage capacity. Why do it this way instead of buying a standard external hard drive? most external hard drives are not designed to run for long periods of time but the wd purple drives are designed to run 24/7 and it also handles video and multiple streams of video better than the standard external hard drives. With recording multiple movies/shows at a time and hours of recording and playback this setup will last a lot longer than the standard external drives. If you read the reviews for external drives that are being used with dvr's you'll find a good many of the bad reviews complain about failures occurring within the first year. After a lot of research for something that was dependable and verified to work with my directv hr44/500 dvr i found this setup on several online forums along with numerous recommendation for the western digital red and purple hard drives. Just keep a couple of thing in mind. First when you press the power off button on your dvr you just put it into standby so recording and guide updates can be done. That's why you need to unplug the dvr or you can run into issues. I do recommend using the reset button after you install and format the drive just to make sure everything is working as it should. Also the internal dvr hard drive can not be seen or used while you have the external drive connected to the dvr. The internal hard drive content does not get deleted when you install an external hard drive. To switch from the external drive to the internal drive you need to unplug the dvr, turn off the external drive, then restart the dvr. Now you can watch whatever you may have on the internal drive. Keep in mind anything you record will record on the internal drive until you switch back to the external drive. This setup is not just an economical alternative for a standard external hard drive but it's far better than any standard esata external hard drive you could buy in this price range. One other tip i learned is the only thing that seems to fail on the docking stations is the power button. Many recommended to unplug the docking station instead of using the power button. I have mine plugged into a battery backup with surge and it also regulates output to a consistent 120 volts so i'm not worried about causing any issues by unplugging and then plugging it back in rather than using the power button. You could use a power strip and turn off the power strip instead of using the power button/switch on your docking station.

I use both the wd purple 2tb and 3tb hard drives in several different security systems and believe they are one of the best surveillance system hard drives available from any manufacturer. The wd purple 1tb is an excellent choice for security systems with a dvr of 960h resolution in either 4 or 8 channel dvr systems. I use the 2tb for ahd/dvr/nvr security systems with sata ii (maximum hd capacity allowed is 2tb) hard drive systems for 720p or 1080p resolutions with 8 camera channels. I use the 3tb for sata iii systems with 16 channels for 720p or 1080p cameras. The wd purple drives are reasonably priced from online store and should provide a long and trouble free service life for critical security systems. With any cctv security system, the hard drive is one of the most critical system parts and must provide dependable service (this is one part you do not want to scrimp on or depend of the typical computer type hard drive). Highly recommended!

This is the third hdd out of this series that i bought. The first one has 3tb and works in my surveillance system 24/7 for a year and half now. The second one is a 2tb and it holds my movies. This one however will be a part of my storage server where it holds all my backup files. So far i have had never a problem with these drives as they are actually made to run and run and run and run. Western digital is my preferred brand when it comes to hdd. My oldest wd just died after being in service for 15 years.

Works perfect . Put this in expandable system firstrend 8ch 1080p wireless nvr system with 4pcs 1080p hd security camera, p2p wireless security camera system for indoor and out. Works perfect ! no problems at all. If you do happen to get this security system they do support up to 6gb hard drive ( which wd does have at a great price ! )

Q. Harrison, Tennessee says

This is an oem hard drive, not the retail one. Oem (original equipment manufacturer) is basically a bare bone unit that doesn't come with all the caviar. It doesn't come with the instruction manual, fancy display box, sata cable, and screws. So far, it's working fine in my video recorder system. Will have to wait and see if it will survive the next three years.

O. Mays, New Mexico

Bought this for a security camera system. Was probably way more storage space than i really needed for my 4 camera system, but for the $ it allows me a ton of storage space. I use the motion record setting, but i'm guessing if i recorded 24/7 it would probably save about a months worth before it started to record over itself again. Drive came packaged nicely and was what you would expect. I'm not a computer guy, but after researching what i needed to my camera system, this was affordable and plugged right in. Camera system formatted it in minutes, and it's been working flawlessly since day 1. Online store generally has this as a suggestion when you search for home security systems, and that's right where it belongs. If you need a hd for your system, i would definitely recommend giving this one a try.

This drive has been in service for over a year and a half with 3 cameras feeding to it 24/7. One 1080p, one 960p and one 480p camera all 25-30fps. The drive has performed beautifully and is very steady in write performance and temperature (used in a mac pro). Loading video, specially while recordings are going, may take a little longer depending on drive activity and file size. For a 5gb 1 hour clip i'm waiting maybe 5 seconds for the file to open and another 5 for playback to be smooth. Slower than you'd see on a traditional drive, keeping in mind this is a 5400rpm drive, but still well worth it. With my configuration it holds a little over two weeks of recordings for all cameras. . The drive currently has 15, 375 hours on it and the s. M. A. R. T. Status and overall drive health is 100%. Not a single bad sector or any signs of wear. I'll replace this down the road only because i'll need a bigger one and even then this will sit in a raid until it fails.

H. Stacey, Calderdale says

It took a lot of web searches to untangle the vague marketing from wd and find out what allframe technology really means. In a nutshell, the hard drive firmware on this drive will prioritize the timeliness of video streams instead of trying to make sure that the data is absolutely correct (which can lead to long pauses and dropped video frames). . The idea is that it would be better to have a bit of imperfection in the data (the video stream) rather than the whole image dropping out for a moment. This is accomplished through the "ata streaming command set. ". . The slow 5400 rpm rotation means that this purple drive is very quiet (this is its best feature, if you're using it for a home theater system and need a super quiet environment) and it generates less heat than a 7200 rpm drive in continuous operation. . The wd purple nv drive is almost identical except it has a few more enterprise level features such as vibration control and a more durable outer case, and support for double the number of video streams (64) through the ata command set. . I also highly recommend a raid 10 configuration with a good adaptec (or other reputable brand) raid controller card to ensure that you can write the video streams to the hard drive fast enough when you have multiple surveillance cameras and/or high definition resolution streams.

It is a surveillance drive for nvr applications. I am assuming that anyone who knows the difference will understand this & the different build construction of different drives. . It is quiet, no obvious noise, i have it running in an amcrest brand nvr which it fit perfectly, screw holes lined up well, the cable connectors fit perfectly. I cannot measure the temperature during operation, but the nvr does not run hot or even warm, so that is a good sign to me. . Longevity - it has not been running for very long, but the wd specs give an expected life (mean measured value, i assume) so i expect it to meet the mean life expectancy. Anything past that is a bonus. . Use it for surveillance & it is fine, these are typically important pieces of stored data, but not normally mission critical, if they are, they you are probably an it expert & you know what to do to back them up anyway (i am not an expert, i just have enough knowledge to be dangerous :-). ). . Overall i have had good luck with different wd drives over the years & i expect no less from this one. . I did not get paid, reimbursed, of given anything for free (never do as i am not important enough online! ) so you are getting my own unbiased, honest opinion & nothing but that. :-)

I use this in a drive array to serve media (tv and video) within my home, so the ultimate measure of a hard drive for me is reliability. I've only had this drive for six weeks, so i can't measure that yet. I'll report back if i experience any issues. . Some more detail: i'm using this in a four-drive windows 10 storage space array. The array is attached to a pretty high-powered media server. I use it for plex to run a whole-home dvr. The system is constantly recording or playing something, often multiple streams at a time. In other words, it gives hard drives a pretty good workout. So, reliability is important to me. I thought i'd give this drive a try since it's labelled as a surveillance drive; it's meant to stand up to continual writing. . With regard to speed, i really can't comment. Since it's part of a multi-drive redundant array, i can't measure the speed of any one drive. That being said, i'm sometimes doing multiple, simultaneous read/write hd video streams and i've never had so much as a stutter. So, it's certainly good enough for my application. . By the way, i'm using the mediasonic probox drive bay (mediasonic probox hf2-su3s2 4 bay 3. 5" sata hdd enclosure - usb 3. 0 & esata support sata 3 6. 0gbps hdd transfer speed). I've been using that for 7 months with no problems so far. That's been a good device and it's plenty fast for my needs. . The verdict: so far, so good, but only time will tell if it stands the test of time.

Installation was very easy. I have a 6 camera system and it only came with a 1tb hard drive. That only meant it saved around 5 days of footage. Since increasing to a total of 7tb, my 6 camera high def lorex system that records 24/7 on the highest possible resolution will now save around 35 days of footage. This is a must buy if you want a decent security system. If you have questions about installation message me. You just basically plug it in and it works. No need to format and no need to do anything to the settings in the system.

E. Alma, Stockport says

Upgraded a 2014 500 gig tivo roamio, series 5, to 3tb in about 30 minutes. No problems. Did the easy upgrade, simply removed the old drive and saved it - in case there are problems down the road - then put the "rails" on the new drive, installed it, put the cover back on and plugged it in. Wait a bit. The series 5 absolutely formats a new blank 3tb disk for you (when it sees a blank disc) and if you're connected to the internet it looks up your on-file mac number and registers the machine again. It might, after recent upgrades, do an even larger disk, but i just went for "easy" - because of past reviews i know 3tb definitely works. After the setup runs for a bit, you'll have to scan again for tv channels, and some other set-up chores like you did when you first bought it, but it's not big deal if you have your different logins handy - which you should. Make a list of shows you want recorded, you'll have to sign them all up again if you take this route. If you don't have the simple tools for the job, go to a online store, best buy, micro center, fry's, etc. And buy a simple small bit torex tool kit for less than $10. 00. You only need two of the most common sizes - but get the set because, who knows, you may have an odd ball screw. This is a very easy upgrade. If you get tangled up, or, forgot something, just put the old drive back in and check your old setting and shows until you're happy. I did not care to do the harder upgrade where you copy the old drive to the new drive and then use windows disk software to "expand" the drive so the tivo sees the entire new drive instead of the "old" drive's size. Didn't have a windows machine and didn't have that many shows i still cared about. Next time, maybe. This is a quality drive, compared to many just a few dollars cheaper. I'm not expecting any problems, but i'll update the review if any pop up.

The western digital purple was the. Most recommended hard drive for my zmodo nvr. Works great, no issues. Zmodo 8ch 1080p hdmi nvr with two. Zmodo 720p indoor dome cameras. Model kc-100x home security system. It did not come with a hard drive installed. So i also purchased a purple wd hdd to install. Only drawback is that it only supports zmodo &. Funlux cameras. Cameras should be ip/network-wired. Still trying to figure out how to connect my. Wireless cameras as one connected itself when. I set the system up.

If you're doing a dvr system and aren't using purples then plan on replacing the drives more often than you should be. The purples are specifically designed for video systems and i can attest to their performance and handling. I've put in over a dozen systems with them and always am very happy with their performance. The 3tb size is perfect for what i use them for and will continue to be my go to drive in the future. If you're doing gaming or general purpose stay clear, but for surveillance this is the one to have

. Nees, Michigan

Bought this along with sabrent usb 2. 0/esata to 3. 5 inch ide or sata/sata ii aluminum hard drive enclosure case with cooling fan (ec-ueis7) and startech 3-feet shielded external esata cable m/m (esata3) to use with my directv hr54-700 receiver. Worked perfectly! . . Directv customers: i found out the hard way when you hook up an external hard drive to your receiver, you lose not only lose your recorded shows/movies on the internal drive but also your list of shows/movies you want to record. It's like starting from scratch.

Z. Powell, New Hampshire says

This drive is designed for constant write duty without spinning down. This mainly happens in video recording systems where video is constantly dumped to disk. This comes at a cost of seek and random access times (reading multiple files from various areas at once is slow). If you are looking for backup, media storage, or network storage, look at the wd red drives. They will perform better in those settings, and are significantly cheaper. . The drive is very quiet compared to many other drives. There is no loud clicking noises, or audible spin up sounds. I have some wd red drives next to this system for network storage, and this drive is significantly quieter than those. I also have some seagate nas drives, but they are so loud i can't even use them in a living space. . Anyhow, this is a great drive. It was installed in a generic low cost network video recorder (hisilicon hi3520d) and it runs fine. Most low to middle end dvr/nvr systems use this chip family and the same software, so this should be compatible with them all. The drive has been saving 4x 1080p streams 24/7, and it has done fine so far through 8tb+ of looped writes over the past few weeks. . The drive does run quite hot in a small enclosure, and most nvr systems do not have good ventilation. To fix this, i just bolted a 140mm fan to the top of the recorder after cutting a hole. This keeps the drive running around 30-40c instead of 60-80, as well as provides cooling to the nvrs processor (which was crazy hot and didn't even come with a heat sink). Most nvrs have a dedicated 12v connector for an optional fan, but if they don't you can always get power from the 12v barrel connector or the 4 pin hdd connector.

M. Suzanne, Rhode Island

You need determine your needs before you purchase a hard drive. Quite simply, they are not all the same. This is a reliable drive, and it's the one you need to purchase if you plan on recording security cameras. I've been piecing together nvrs to record uhd (4k) images from ip cameras. I had originally planned on purchasing one of those 4-8 security camera units available at some of the membership stores. The cameras wouldn't work, but i curious to know what hds were used by these companies. When i opened up the nvr i immediately saw a western digital purple drive. . The purple drive is rated for continuous recording, with minimum chance of failure, in a security system setup. If you check the western digital site you can see which drives are best for which use. . I've been pleased with the wd purple drive, it has a large capacity, and it has the ability to continuously write information from many cameras simultaneously. I would recommend this wd purple drive to others. . I hope you find this review helpful.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

Y. Perez, Kent says

Zero stars. I bought this to replace hardrive in q-see home security dvr. Original harddrive was also western digital and it went out in less than 3 years. Neither qsee or western digital accepted reaponsibilty so instead of wasting more of my life with customer service, i gave up and bought new hardrive myself. I installed it and it began to format/initialize, as its supposed to do. Shortly thereafter the dvr turned off and now wont power up anymore. Tech support was no help, suggested i exchange for another one or return for refund. Ok, what about my dvr that is now a paperweight? ive never bought a product that made a situation worse.

E. Wells, Illinois

Purchased june 8th, failed july 27th. Was being used in a swann security dvr for less than 2 months. Wth? ! submitted for rma. Not thrilled.

K. Nicole, Wigan says

Need some help, when i plug this into my new lorex nvr and hook it all back up the system is saying 'no disk' so it is not showing up available for me to format. I'm not sure if its and issue with this hd or the nvr, if i plug back in the old hd it shows up fine. Any tips or suggestions for what i should try next?

S. Brenda, York

Failed after 4 months in a swann dvr

. Amanda, Lewisham says

I bought the hdd in july 2014. It ran non-stop with my security cameras. Exactly a year later, the cameras started to flicker, and when i turned off the hard drive to reboot, jit did not come back on - it said loading . And then quit.

T. Betty, Virginia

Drive was doa, and considering the old failed drive was also western digital, going to give up on wd and go with another brand. I know it's not the dvr, because i was able to take an older smaller seagate sata and use it in the dvr, but need to get something with at least 1tb of space.

G. Carol, Indiana says

I purchased this item in october 2015 and it stopped working within 6 months of use. I have tried contacting online store's "warranty questions" department several times but am yet to receive a response. I had no choice but to purchase a replacement, and i did so via another company.

U. Carrie, Essex

Hard drive would get a better review, but it didn't even last a full 4 months. Hd is already dead.

N. Dorothy, Wyoming says

I bought this 2tb drive for use in a dvr. When i installed it two weeks ago it would not initialize nor can it be recognized. My return window has closed. So much for buying for the future!

M. Lara, Brandenburg

Bought had for 7 days, now it keeps rebooting my system over and over. Brand new. And don't even work properly

I. Nees, Kentucky says

Great so far i think? after installing, after a while my ears picked up a noise. Towards end of the day, it started bugging me what the noise was. It was a knocking noise or a thud. Only thing that can move in this dell optiplex 7040 is the fan on the cpu, which i hear running. Then i can hear and feel the noise coming from the computer. Only thing else would it could be is the new hard drive. I'll have to take the top off and see if i can run the computer that way to see first hand. I'm not sure and i will come back and update this review.

R. Susana, Derbyshire

Wow. I ordered four of these 8tb purz and they were all bad. . Refunding and i am not sure yet whether i want to replace them with western digital brand drives again or switch to another brand. Sold by: better choice online. . Three of these were loud and sounded like the head was scratching the spinning disk when they started. Only one showed up in disk manager, but it was only for a minute. When i went to initialize the disk, disk manager stopped responding and never saw the disk again.

H. Denise, Pennsylvania says

Dead on arrival. . My pc wasn't able to recognize this drive, i try to scan and format but no luck

W. Kellie, South Carolina

It died in less than a month of use and the return window expired. I thought it was recording all this time and now i need to verify an incident and i have nothing

A. Michele, Newcastle upon Tyne says

1st hard drive arrived doa. 2nd one is working fine

. Newell, Newham

I bought this drive in september 2015 to go in my lorex nvr security system. Twice now within the past month the drive has failed. Extremely disappointed in wd.

X. Guest, Iowa says

Bought this for use in an nvr. Once this drive was in place, the nvr wasn't working correctly due to faulty disk. However, i had never even suspected that i had purchased a dead disk. My focus, for 2 months on and off, had been on the nvr and the recording device configuration. By the time i had decided to pull out the hdd, the return window was closed!

Q. Sandra, Northwest Territries

Dose not work, wont even let me format it! junk now its to late to return it

B. Moore, Rheinland-Pfalz says

Seems to work well for my security cams

Z. Alice, Greenwich

The drive works ok but my directv dvr stutters fairly often (every 30-60 minutes) with this drive and it's a classic drive access issue. The low power drives are definitely not ideal for video streaming (dvr) work.

D. Linda, Prince Edward Island says

Worked perfectly, mounted & formatted fine in a nvr. Then after 6 months it died. . First i thought it was the nvr but when i put in a different hard drive the nvr worked fine. I then took the wd hard drive and put it inside a usb sata enclosure and then inside a computer. Both times the drive wouldn t even power where other drives would just fine. . I attempted to submit an advanced rma via wd rma website and i couldn t get past the address and credit card page. First, it wouldn t let me ship to a different address than what my credit card was registered to. I gave in and just set the credit card and shipping address as the same. Every time i tried to submit it would auto erase the us state i was shipping to and the submit button would stay grayed out. I guess western digital doesn t recognize the state of california. I figured maybe it was my web browser i was using but after multiple attempts thru different web browsers i decide to just call them instead. . Western digital s phone support was a much better experience than their website. The rep was helpful and easy to talk to. They told me in 3 to 5 business days i will get a replacement. A refurbished replacement. Thanks western digital. Thanks for agreeing to send me a used, previously defective hard drive to replace the one i purchased new at full price 6 months ago. . Maybe after the logo on your hard drive where it says 24 x 7 reliability you should add . For 6 months

C. Diana, Rotherham

This is one loud hard drive , i installed it in a dvr security system , i don't think i've ever heard a hard drive make that much noise .

P. Patricia, Centre says

I went with this wd purple hd for my nvr instead of the white label ones i usually buy on online store. It failed just after my ability to return it to online store. The rma to return this back to wd is daunting and i am without a drive for about 1 month.

V. Sarah, Massachusetts

I bought 2 they both failed just at 90 day mark
