Purple Surveillance Hard Disk Drive (Western Digital) 2701

Review for wd purple surveillance hard disk

Price was $219.45. I needed to upgrade my tivo hard drive and after doing some research i decided on a survelillance drive as it is made for large video files and is made for fairly continuous operation. With 3tb of space i don't have to worry about shows being deleted. I can save all episodes of futurama and other favorites. Drive seems quiet and after a couple of months, i have had zero issues. So far so good.

Prologue

Been running 3 months now and no problems. I'm glad i spent the few extra bucks and went with the purple one because i was told by my it guy that the purple wd hard drives are intended for security camera hard drives, since they run 24/7. Great purchase, so far. Wd purple 6tb surveillance hard disk drive - 5400 rpm class sata 6 gb/s 64mb cache 3.5 inch - wd60purx old version Review (wd60purx)

Installation was very easy. I have a 6 camera system and it only came with a 1tb hard drive. That only meant it saved around 5 days of footage. Since increasing to a total of 7tb, my 6 camera high def lorex system that records 24/7 on the highest possible resolution will now save around 35 days of footage. This is a must buy if you want a decent security system. If you have questions about installation message me. You just basically plug it in and it works. No need to format and no need to do anything to the settings in the system. -P. Reed

PROS
  • Bought this for a security camera system. Was probably way more storage space than i really needed for my 4 camera system, but for the $ it allows me a ton of storage space. I use the motion record setting, but i'm guessing if i recorded 24/7 it would probably save about a months worth before it started to record over itself again. Drive came packaged nicely and was what you would expect. I'm not a computer guy, but after researching what i needed to my camera system, this was affordable and plugged right in. Camera system formatted it in minutes, and it's been working flawlessly since day 1. Online store generally has this as a suggestion when you search for home security systems, and that's right where it belongs. If you need a hd for your system, i would definitely recommend giving this one a try.
  • Upgraded a 2014 500 gig tivo roamio, series 5, to 3tb in about 30 minutes. No problems. Did the easy upgrade, simply removed the old drive and saved it - in case there are problems down the road - then put the "rails" on the new drive, installed it, put the cover back on and plugged it in. Wait a bit. The series 5 absolutely formats a new blank 3tb disk for you (when it sees a blank disc) and if you're connected to the internet it looks up your on-file mac number and registers the machine again. It might, after recent upgrades, do an even larger disk, but i just went for "easy" - because of past reviews i know 3tb definitely works. After the setup runs for a bit, you'll have to scan again for tv channels, and some other set-up chores like you did when you first bought it, but it's not big deal if you have your different logins handy - which you should. Make a list of shows you want recorded, you'll have to sign them all up again if you take this route. If you don't have the simple tools for the job, go to a online store, best buy, micro center, fry's, etc. And buy a simple small bit torex tool kit for less than $10. 00. You only need two of the most common sizes - but get the set because, who knows, you may have an odd ball screw. This is a very easy upgrade. If you get tangled up, or, forgot something, just put the old drive back in and check your old setting and shows until you're happy. I did not care to do the harder upgrade where you copy the old drive to the new drive and then use windows disk software to "expand" the drive so the tivo sees the entire new drive instead of the "old" drive's size. Didn't have a windows machine and didn't have that many shows i still cared about. Next time, maybe. This is a quality drive, compared to many just a few dollars cheaper. I'm not expecting any problems, but i'll update the review if any pop up.
CONS
  • Drive was doa, and considering the old failed drive was also western digital, going to give up on wd and go with another brand. I know it's not the dvr, because i was able to take an older smaller seagate sata and use it in the dvr, but need to get something with at least 1tb of space.
  • Stopped working after 1-1/2 years, 3-year warranty, need to put in warranty claim, wish me luck, now the fun begins
  • I went with this wd purple hd for my nvr instead of the white label ones i usually buy on online store. It failed just after my ability to return it to online store. The rma to return this back to wd is daunting and i am without a drive for about 1 month.

wd purple surveillance hard disk WD Purple 6TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD60PURX [Old Version] (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

This is the third hdd out of this series that i bought. The first one has 3tb and works in my surveillance system 24/7 for a year and half now. The second one is a 2tb and it holds my movies. This one however will be a part of my storage server where it holds all my backup files. So far i have had never a problem with these drives as they are actually made to run and run and run and run. Western digital is my preferred brand when it comes to hdd. My oldest wd just died after being in service for 15 years.

(0) Question: Will this work with a floureon h. 264 dvr?

(1) Question: What is the rpm platter spin speed? 5400? 7200? thanks for any input.

(2) Question: Why does it say it has no space?

The F.A.Q. for wd purple 6tb surveillance hard disk drive - 5400 rpm class sata 6 gb/s 64mb cache 3.5 inch - wd60purx old version

I got this to increase my recording capacity for my directv dvr hr44/500 along with the anker usb 3. 0 & esata to sata external hard drive docking station the install was a breeze, just slide the wd purple hard drive into the anker or the docking station of your choosing, connect the esata cable from the anker/docking station to the directv dvr esata port (make sure dvr is turned off by unplugging it), turn on the anker/docking station, then plug in and turn on the directv dvr. You'll see the dvr find then format the new drive and you're all set. If you have any issues after you restart the dvr just press the small red button (reset button) located behind the small door on the front right side of the dvr hr44/500 where the access card slides in. This should fix any issues you may have so try this first before trying any thing else. Now enjoy the extra storage capacity. Why do it this way instead of buying a standard external hard drive? most external hard drives are not designed to run for long periods of time but the wd purple drives are designed to run 24/7 and it also handles video and multiple streams of video better than the standard external hard drives. With recording multiple movies/shows at a time and hours of recording and playback this setup will last a lot longer than the standard external drives. If you read the reviews for external drives that are being used with dvr's you'll find a good many of the bad reviews complain about failures occurring within the first year. After a lot of research for something that was dependable and verified to work with my directv hr44/500 dvr i found this setup on several online forums along with numerous recommendation for the western digital red and purple hard drives. Just keep a couple of thing in mind. First when you press the power off button on your dvr you just put it into standby so recording and guide updates can be done. That's why you need to unplug the dvr or you can run into issues. I do recommend using the reset button after you install and format the drive just to make sure everything is working as it should. Also the internal dvr hard drive can not be seen or used while you have the external drive connected to the dvr. The internal hard drive content does not get deleted when you install an external hard drive. To switch from the external drive to the internal drive you need to unplug the dvr, turn off the external drive, then restart the dvr. Now you can watch whatever you may have on the internal drive. Keep in mind anything you record will record on the internal drive until you switch back to the external drive. This setup is not just an economical alternative for a standard external hard drive but it's far better than any standard esata external hard drive you could buy in this price range. One other tip i learned is the only thing that seems to fail on the docking stations is the power button. Many recommended to unplug the docking station instead of using the power button. I have mine plugged into a battery backup with surge and it also regulates output to a consistent 120 volts so i'm not worried about causing any issues by unplugging and then plugging it back in rather than using the power button. You could use a power strip and turn off the power strip instead of using the power button/switch on your docking station.

This drive resolved an issue i was having on my media pc which runs my 6 security ip cameras 24/7 with motion, and, my 4 tuner centon cable card. That's a lot of concurrent i/o, and i previously experienced glitches in my cable recordings when shows would start and overlap. Or, during a recording when the cameras would detect motion and go bonkers writing all the motion along with the 6 24/7 recordings, and, whatever tuner recording! . . Now, there are no glitches. It's true what wd claims about it being able to support up to 32 cameras. I suspect they designed the caching algorithms to support 32 channels being written simultaneously. Each must have it's own buffer! . . The wd purple drive is an excellent choice for many simultaneous recording. Weither it be from security cameras, or tuner cards. It has worked great for me. I'm planning on getting 1 more larger drive.

I have this in a dvr connected to four surveillance cameras. They aren't hd cameras so using this hard drive gets me over a month of storage before having to make room for new recordings. . I previously used a couple old hard drives i had laying around. They both starting having lots of problems before too long, like losing recordings because i had to reformat the drive over and over again. That led me to searching for a drive made specifically for constant use. I've had this for about six months and so far no problems whatsoever.

If you're doing a dvr system and aren't using purples then plan on replacing the drives more often than you should be. The purples are specifically designed for video systems and i can attest to their performance and handling. I've put in over a dozen systems with them and always am very happy with their performance. The 3tb size is perfect for what i use them for and will continue to be my go to drive in the future. If you're doing gaming or general purpose stay clear, but for surveillance this is the one to have

Z. Sharon, Saskatchewan

I have purchased several of these. I have not had one fail yet. The are twice the storage i could get just a few years ago and half the price. Just remember that if you are running a 32 bit os on your dvr you can only use 2 tb of the storage space.

E. Betty, Georgia says

It took a lot of web searches to untangle the vague marketing from wd and find out what allframe technology really means. In a nutshell, the hard drive firmware on this drive will prioritize the timeliness of video streams instead of trying to make sure that the data is absolutely correct (which can lead to long pauses and dropped video frames). . The idea is that it would be better to have a bit of imperfection in the data (the video stream) rather than the whole image dropping out for a moment. This is accomplished through the "ata streaming command set. ". . The slow 5400 rpm rotation means that this purple drive is very quiet (this is its best feature, if you're using it for a home theater system and need a super quiet environment) and it generates less heat than a 7200 rpm drive in continuous operation. . The wd purple nv drive is almost identical except it has a few more enterprise level features such as vibration control and a more durable outer case, and support for double the number of video streams (64) through the ata command set. . I also highly recommend a raid 10 configuration with a good adaptec (or other reputable brand) raid controller card to ensure that you can write the video streams to the hard drive fast enough when you have multiple surveillance cameras and/or high definition resolution streams.

K. Audrey, Quebec

I use both the wd purple 2tb and 3tb hard drives in several different security systems and believe they are one of the best surveillance system hard drives available from any manufacturer. The wd purple 1tb is an excellent choice for security systems with a dvr of 960h resolution in either 4 or 8 channel dvr systems. I use the 2tb for ahd/dvr/nvr security systems with sata ii (maximum hd capacity allowed is 2tb) hard drive systems for 720p or 1080p resolutions with 8 camera channels. I use the 3tb for sata iii systems with 16 channels for 720p or 1080p cameras. The wd purple drives are reasonably priced from online store and should provide a long and trouble free service life for critical security systems. With any cctv security system, the hard drive is one of the most critical system parts and must provide dependable service (this is one part you do not want to scrimp on or depend of the typical computer type hard drive). Highly recommended!

. Noguera, Maryland says

Works flawlessly. I've had several wd hard drives, and it's been many years since any of them failed. It comes unformatted, so you have to format it in your computer before you install it in your surveillance dvr.

First purple drive works great with my nvr5232-16p-4ks2 been very happy so far . Started using it first week of jan 2018 so its been about 3 months no complaint first time i ever heard of purple hdd. I did a lot of research and many phone calls before i ordered. I wanted the best. This is it. Attention , 2nd drive arrived defective. Had to write here because it won't let me write another review on buying a second one. Thought it was my nvr but wasn't. After calling wester digital and online store. Online store replaced rapidly no hassle. Second one work as should. I was a little stress and wd gave me a disount for further purchase. Very rare a drive fails out of box not sure if sub zero cold in shipping caused a issue . Im happy i got a new one and alls great now

A. Brendon, Milton Keynes says

I have two of these 1tb purple drives in service in linux-based 16-channel surveillance camera dvr's, running exclusively in motion-triggered mode, with daily play-back. For less than two months so far. The drives connected and installed with no problem (except that i had to provide the mounting screws), and they formatted automatically - "plug and play". I have not noticed any physical (noise, heat, etc. ) nor operational issues so far - although the full capacity of the drives hasn't been "consumed" yet, so it's yet to be seen how they may behave when "over-writing" starts (which is where i've seen occasional problems show up with other dvr drives in the past). . So far, so good!

B. Cassella, Champagne-Ardenne

I purchased this drive to supplement my amcrest nvr and 4 camera setup. The drive installed in perfect condition and was simple to install. The packaging was retail quality and i've had the drive recording my cctv setup for the past 3 weeks with absolutely no issues. The drive seems to keep up with all of my camera feeds and playback is as good as i had hoped. I would definitely recommend this disk drive to anyone installing their own cctv system.

X. Maria, Durham says

Using the drive in an 8-channel dvr. This hd is quiet! records and plays back. Good value. The absence of 'funny noises' coming from the hd leads me to believe it will continue working for a long time. No jumpers were required to get it to work in the dvr. Recorded/played right out of the box.

H. Theola, Oklahoma

I purchased this drive to go with my new netgear centria n900 dual band gigabit wireless router with 3. 5" storage bay (wndr4700). I have this set up as an internal wireless lan at my home and store all my video and music content on this drive. With the n900 wireless this does for me more than any dvr out there can since i can access it from any device in my house including my desktop. Great combination. My plan is to add in a couple wireless surveillance cameras to the setup in the near future, and i expect it to continue to work just as good for that purpose as it does for my multimedia streaming.

. Pearson, Wiltshire says

Bought this along with sabrent usb 2. 0/esata to 3. 5 inch ide or sata/sata ii aluminum hard drive enclosure case with cooling fan (ec-ueis7) and startech 3-feet shielded external esata cable m/m (esata3) to use with my directv hr54-700 receiver. Worked perfectly! . . Directv customers: i found out the hard way when you hook up an external hard drive to your receiver, you lose not only lose your recorded shows/movies on the internal drive but also your list of shows/movies you want to record. It's like starting from scratch.

R. Cathy, Wigan says

As a drive for a simple analog dvr, the 2tb model might have been a little mismatched. With 4 cameras, 1000tvl, it uses maybe half of that at most, on a month with lots of motion detection. The surveillance aspect of it helps those events run smoother too (compared to a regular desktop hdd). . We plan to load a nas with these next, to mirror the footage remotely. Right now, this device is in that analog dvr system, and it watches our company doors 24/7. Have not had a problem with it yet. Very nice drive - and the recording seemed to improve along with playback after installing this version. . This is probably due to the spin up time, and that these drives are made to keep spinning at a low rate so that the device does not need to stop, the start up, then stop, and repeat over and over with recording. They are not optimized for pc, and i would not suggest one for a pc unless its a really amazing price, and you are limited on options. Their benefits show during cctv usage - like it says. Surveillance drives.

G. Newell, North Yorkshire

I'm using this in my hikvision surveillance system. So far so good. Plugged two of them in and fired up the machine. Set it to initialize them and they've been working ever since. Just what i needed. . Remember, if you are using hard drives for surveillance systems, you will need to get something like this which is specifically designed for constant write access. If you want one for your computer, this isn't needed. Just get a regular one.

L. Shayna, Idaho says

This drive has been in service for over a year and a half with 3 cameras feeding to it 24/7. One 1080p, one 960p and one 480p camera all 25-30fps. The drive has performed beautifully and is very steady in write performance and temperature (used in a mac pro). Loading video, specially while recordings are going, may take a little longer depending on drive activity and file size. For a 5gb 1 hour clip i'm waiting maybe 5 seconds for the file to open and another 5 for playback to be smooth. Slower than you'd see on a traditional drive, keeping in mind this is a 5400rpm drive, but still well worth it. With my configuration it holds a little over two weeks of recordings for all cameras. . The drive currently has 15, 375 hours on it and the s. M. A. R. T. Status and overall drive health is 100%. Not a single bad sector or any signs of wear. I'll replace this down the road only because i'll need a bigger one and even then this will sit in a raid until it fails.

. Nielsen, California

The western digital purple was the. Most recommended hard drive for my zmodo nvr. Works great, no issues. Zmodo 8ch 1080p hdmi nvr with two. Zmodo 720p indoor dome cameras. Model kc-100x home security system. It did not come with a hard drive installed. So i also purchased a purple wd hdd to install. Only drawback is that it only supports zmodo &. Funlux cameras. Cameras should be ip/network-wired. Still trying to figure out how to connect my. Wireless cameras as one connected itself when. I set the system up.

M. Lynette, Birmingham says

This is an oem hard drive, not the retail one. Oem (original equipment manufacturer) is basically a bare bone unit that doesn't come with all the caviar. It doesn't come with the instruction manual, fancy display box, sata cable, and screws. So far, it's working fine in my video recorder system. Will have to wait and see if it will survive the next three years.

F. Laura, Stoke-on-Trent

Before reading any review read this: there is a key problem with the way this section is set up. For some reason it lists a very old (2014) model of this drive along with the same new generation improved model. What makes that bad is that the user comments are both mixed together, so any problems with the original drive appear right on top of the list and may be misleading. It s very important then to look at the tiny print at the top of each comment and see if the user is talking about the old generation style or the new generation style. To be clear, i am talking about the improved new generation style. . If you are not already familiar with the difference between a general purpose hard drive and one designed for video security let me start with a very basic comparison. This comparison is very broad and not a textbook definition by any means. . How it works. . Computers write and read their information to a hard drive in tiny chunks that are scattered randomly all over the disk, so the recording/playback heads are constantly jumping from place to place. Speed of access in a computer is extremely important. On the other hand video surveillance recorders write and read their information more like an old-fashioned tape recorder, pretty much just like what the cameras are seeing in real time. The recording/playback heads are only required to jump to another spot on the disk when you want to play back an event. So random-access search time is far less of a priority than the non-stop grunt work of recording dependably 24/7/365 without a hiccup. The two processes are entirely different job tasks. . Comparison: brand a vs. Brand b. . There are two major brands of specialized video surveillance hard drives. My nvr is one of the most respected out there for users who have a lot of experience and they chose to use the other brand of hard drive. Kudos to them because many other video security manufacturers believe you ll never know what s inside so they install the cheapest no-name generic hard drive they can buy. I ve been buying this brand of security system for years and have been very happy with it and when i wanted to increase my drive capacity from 2tb to 4tb i had no idea if switching to a wd brand drive would make any difference at all. Engineers told me that the two brands are not identical in their design philosophy, each brand considering certain design parameters to be the slightly better way to go. . Is there a difference. . Because the nvr software, firmware and other factors play at least as much of a role in performance as the hard drive i was looking to improve these things:. . 1. Drive noise. 2. Drive heat. 3. Stuttering (when the image suddenly jumps or drops a few frames, usually on playback). . I measured the operating temperature both drives in real-life use in identical conditions using a precision instrument. The original drive was operating at 97. 7 f and the wd measured at 91. 6 f. That 6 degree difference is significant but not substantial. . Likewise i used a calibrated sound level meter for each drive. The original drive came in at 47 dba. The wd was at 46. 9 dba, virtually identical. . The last condition is more difficult to quantify because stuttering is sporadic, so in my opinion i would classify any differences in a typical use scenario as atypical, was i experiencing fewer or more instances of stuttering or about the same? i tried to make my comparison without prejudice for or against either brand because i really don t care whose name is on it. I bought the wd primarily to double my recording capacity and hence the number of days it would record events. That being said in real-life everyday use i have to lean slightly toward the wd as having fewer instances of jumping, stuttering or frame dropping in my particular system and it does seem to handle a few second backspace more smoothly than the original drive. Maybe another way of putting it is that the wd seems to be playing nicer with the nvr s software/firmware than the brand the manufacturer originally spec d. . Will it improve my security system. . The short answer is not really. Any differences in operating temperature and noise level are too close to be significant and both brands are optimized for video security so abnormalities like stuttering are just that, and are not completely attributable to the hard drive. We can say categorically that the brand or type of hard drive you use will not improve the image resolution (picture quality) of your system. . Bottom line satisfaction. . All things considered the wd is consistently a few bucks more than the other brand and i m not a big fan of ever paying more if i don t have to. So based on the few things i could measure and one that i could only perceive i have to say i do like this drive and i believe i made the right choice.

N. Carol, Wisconsin says

This drive is designed for constant write duty without spinning down. This mainly happens in video recording systems where video is constantly dumped to disk. This comes at a cost of seek and random access times (reading multiple files from various areas at once is slow). If you are looking for backup, media storage, or network storage, look at the wd red drives. They will perform better in those settings, and are significantly cheaper. . The drive is very quiet compared to many other drives. There is no loud clicking noises, or audible spin up sounds. I have some wd red drives next to this system for network storage, and this drive is significantly quieter than those. I also have some seagate nas drives, but they are so loud i can't even use them in a living space. . Anyhow, this is a great drive. It was installed in a generic low cost network video recorder (hisilicon hi3520d) and it runs fine. Most low to middle end dvr/nvr systems use this chip family and the same software, so this should be compatible with them all. The drive has been saving 4x 1080p streams 24/7, and it has done fine so far through 8tb+ of looped writes over the past few weeks. . The drive does run quite hot in a small enclosure, and most nvr systems do not have good ventilation. To fix this, i just bolted a 140mm fan to the top of the recorder after cutting a hole. This keeps the drive running around 30-40c instead of 60-80, as well as provides cooling to the nvrs processor (which was crazy hot and didn't even come with a heat sink). Most nvrs have a dedicated 12v connector for an optional fan, but if they don't you can always get power from the 12v barrel connector or the 4 pin hdd connector.

Q. Finch, Barnsley

Purchased this for my new ip security camera system and opted to save some money and install my own hard drive instead of having the distributor install it. I contacted the distributor to find out which drives they recommend and without hesitation they said they only use wd purple drives for their installs so ordering this was a no brainer. Online store's price was pretty much the same as others but i'm so glad i got this from online store. When my drive arrived (packaged very well) i could not get my system to boot up. After some testing i could see that the bios would recognize the drive but it would fail to initialize and would report an error. Online store's rma process is the best. They immediately sent me a replacement and shipping label to return the bad drive. The replacement installed perfectly with no problems. I'm only a couple days into this drive but it works and hopefully the specialized specs will allow it to run cooler, longer, and more reliably store the video data. Unfortunately, i won't really be able to give a proper review until i've had it running for a really long time after going through several overwrite cycles and scouring through video feeds looking for errors. I'll update if i have any problems with the drive but otherwise you can assume that drive is working out perfectly for me.

For a few years now i've used hgst nas drives for camera dvr/nvr's. Noticing a while back that hgst released their newer model of that drive. Increasing the cache to 128mb. I thought it could only get better. The reviews tell another story so i decided to go elsewhere. I ran into someone recently who mentioned they use these purple drives and had for 2 years. I decided why not. I got my first one recently and put it into someone's camera nvr and it seems to work fine. Oh so quiet and quite snappy. Time will tell on the distance they go but so far, these have taken over the green drives successfully. . It's funny how some companies hard drive models work great. And some are dud's. Go figure how these cheaper prurple drives seem to be more reliable than their higher end ones. The blue drives were rock solid back in their day. But those days are gone.

. Claudia, Brandenburg

It is a surveillance drive for nvr applications. I am assuming that anyone who knows the difference will understand this & the different build construction of different drives. . It is quiet, no obvious noise, i have it running in an amcrest brand nvr which it fit perfectly, screw holes lined up well, the cable connectors fit perfectly. I cannot measure the temperature during operation, but the nvr does not run hot or even warm, so that is a good sign to me. . Longevity - it has not been running for very long, but the wd specs give an expected life (mean measured value, i assume) so i expect it to meet the mean life expectancy. Anything past that is a bonus. . Use it for surveillance & it is fine, these are typically important pieces of stored data, but not normally mission critical, if they are, they you are probably an it expert & you know what to do to back them up anyway (i am not an expert, i just have enough knowledge to be dangerous :-). ). . Overall i have had good luck with different wd drives over the years & i expect no less from this one. . I did not get paid, reimbursed, of given anything for free (never do as i am not important enough online! ) so you are getting my own unbiased, honest opinion & nothing but that. :-)

Top wd purple surveillance hard disk Review

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

F. Isabel, Bury says

Purchased june 8th, failed july 27th. Was being used in a swann security dvr for less than 2 months. Wth? ! submitted for rma. Not thrilled.

A. Crawford, Gloucestershire

1st hard drive arrived doa. 2nd one is working fine

V. Cassella, Halton says

Wow. I ordered four of these 8tb purz and they were all bad. . Refunding and i am not sure yet whether i want to replace them with western digital brand drives again or switch to another brand. Sold by: better choice online. . Three of these were loud and sounded like the head was scratching the spinning disk when they started. Only one showed up in disk manager, but it was only for a minute. When i went to initialize the disk, disk manager stopped responding and never saw the disk again.

D. Kristen, Alaska

Seems to work well for my security cams

J. Audrey, Dorset says

It died in less than a month of use and the return window expired. I thought it was recording all this time and now i need to verify an incident and i have nothing

X. Patricia, Haute-Normandie

Had for about 3 months before it went back however western digital was great with there warranty ! and send me a brand new one in two days

C. Dorothy, Centre says

Dead on arrival. . My pc wasn't able to recognize this drive, i try to scan and format but no luck

E. Carolyn, South Carolina

It did not work with our cameras and equipment

T. Michele, Somerset says

I purchased this item in october 2015 and it stopped working within 6 months of use. I have tried contacting online store's "warranty questions" department several times but am yet to receive a response. I had no choice but to purchase a replacement, and i did so via another company.

G. Hannah, Pays de la Loire

Started giving problems just before the two year mark. Completely died a couple of months later. Had it running in a q-see nvr. Very reluctant to buying another wd drive after this.

. Wilson, Milton Keynes says

The drive works ok but my directv dvr stutters fairly often (every 30-60 minutes) with this drive and it's a classic drive access issue. The low power drives are definitely not ideal for video streaming (dvr) work.

Y. Jennifer, South Carolina

I bought 2 they both failed just at 90 day mark

R. Ruff, Coventry says

Need some help, when i plug this into my new lorex nvr and hook it all back up the system is saying 'no disk' so it is not showing up available for me to format. I'm not sure if its and issue with this hd or the nvr, if i plug back in the old hd it shows up fine. Any tips or suggestions for what i should try next?

Z. Finch, Wiltshire

Worked perfectly, mounted & formatted fine in a nvr. Then after 6 months it died. . First i thought it was the nvr but when i put in a different hard drive the nvr worked fine. I then took the wd hard drive and put it inside a usb sata enclosure and then inside a computer. Both times the drive wouldn t even power where other drives would just fine. . I attempted to submit an advanced rma via wd rma website and i couldn t get past the address and credit card page. First, it wouldn t let me ship to a different address than what my credit card was registered to. I gave in and just set the credit card and shipping address as the same. Every time i tried to submit it would auto erase the us state i was shipping to and the submit button would stay grayed out. I guess western digital doesn t recognize the state of california. I figured maybe it was my web browser i was using but after multiple attempts thru different web browsers i decide to just call them instead. . Western digital s phone support was a much better experience than their website. The rep was helpful and easy to talk to. They told me in 3 to 5 business days i will get a replacement. A refurbished replacement. Thanks western digital. Thanks for agreeing to send me a used, previously defective hard drive to replace the one i purchased new at full price 6 months ago. . Maybe after the logo on your hard drive where it says 24 x 7 reliability you should add . For 6 months

. Valencia, New Hampshire says

Bought had for 7 days, now it keeps rebooting my system over and over. Brand new. And don't even work properly

U. Cunningham, Camden

Installed it a month ago as a secondary storage drive everything was working and today i rebooted my camera server after some updates and it wouldn't boot. Once i disconnected this drive it booted. I put the drive in another pc and it also wouldn't boot. Return window closed so it looks like i have to deal with wd now. Pretty sad how short lived this drive was.

B. Imelda, City of London says

I bought this drive in september 2015 to go in my lorex nvr security system. Twice now within the past month the drive has failed. Extremely disappointed in wd.

M. Hakala, Baden-Wuerttemberg

Not sure why but after a month of use the disk is making a loud humming sound. It was right around the time it filled up with recorded video from my nvr. I am guessing it is going to fail soon.

I. Alma, Texas says

Defective, had it in my dvr, it had issues. Sent dvr to get tested. Was determined hard drive faliure

Q. Joanne, Prince Edward Island

I bought the hdd in july 2014. It ran non-stop with my security cameras. Exactly a year later, the cameras started to flicker, and when i turned off the hard drive to reboot, jit did not come back on - it said loading . And then quit.

K. Helen, Northwest Territries says

Hard drive would get a better review, but it didn't even last a full 4 months. Hd is already dead.

S. Stacey, Ohio

I bought this 2tb drive for use in a dvr. When i installed it two weeks ago it would not initialize nor can it be recognized. My return window has closed. So much for buying for the future!

N. Jacqueline, Hawaii says

Zero stars. I bought this to replace hardrive in q-see home security dvr. Original harddrive was also western digital and it went out in less than 3 years. Neither qsee or western digital accepted reaponsibilty so instead of wasting more of my life with customer service, i gave up and bought new hardrive myself. I installed it and it began to format/initialize, as its supposed to do. Shortly thereafter the dvr turned off and now wont power up anymore. Tech support was no help, suggested i exchange for another one or return for refund. Ok, what about my dvr that is now a paperweight? ive never bought a product that made a situation worse.

W. Theola, Sheffield

Bought this for use in an nvr. Once this drive was in place, the nvr wasn't working correctly due to faulty disk. However, i had never even suspected that i had purchased a dead disk. My focus, for 2 months on and off, had been on the nvr and the recording device configuration. By the time i had decided to pull out the hdd, the return window was closed!

L. Carol, Durham says

Great so far i think? after installing, after a while my ears picked up a noise. Towards end of the day, it started bugging me what the noise was. It was a knocking noise or a thud. Only thing that can move in this dell optiplex 7040 is the fan on the cpu, which i hear running. Then i can hear and feel the noise coming from the computer. Only thing else would it could be is the new hard drive. I'll have to take the top off and see if i can run the computer that way to see first hand. I'm not sure and i will come back and update this review.
