Sony Htnt5 Sound Bar Hi-res Audio Wireless Streaming (Home Theater System Or Htib) 2296

Review for sound bar hires audio wireless

Price was $598.00. Update -. The price seems to have gone up to $700, be advised that my original review is based on the $600 price tag i paid for it. Also, it doesn't seem to want to play nice with my tv, it keeps changing the inputs. Based on the new price and my issues with the hdmi switching i am changing to 4 stars. Still a good buy, but that $100 difference in price really makes a difference for me. In my opinion this is a great vallue at $600. It's average at $700 i think. . -. First of all, this is still a sound bar, and it still sounds like a sound bar to the pretty much any level of discerning ear. That being said, it does sound pretty amazing considering what it is. . I have a very large great room with very high ceilings that just isn't conducive to hooking up a true surround system, as much as i'd like to. I am addmittedly a bit of an audio snob, so the search for a reasonably priced sound bar that hit all the boxes for me was a daunting task to say the least. . I will say that the klipsch r10b caught my ear pretty early on, but it just wasn't the one. It has pretty decent sized drivers, so the sound is pretty big, and the sub is nice, but it doesn't have hdmi, it doesn't have any sort of wifi protocol, and it is pretty ugly and bulky. For that much money i just needed something with better features and a prettier face. . I also checked out some of the slightly more expensive bars like def technology. The w studio micro is cool, it's pretty, and it sounds alright, albeit a little small (because it is "micro"), but it still didn't include hdmi and i just didn't feel like it was worth the money when you compared it to the sony. The slightly more expensive def tech w studio was awesome, but i just wasn't willing to spend $1k for a sound bar. . So all roads lead back to the htnt5. I have never been a big fan of sony audio, to be perfectly frank, but i gave it a listen because i was out of options and walking in circles in best buy. It immediately caught my attention with it's looks and then fortified it's place with it's sound. It had hdmi, the bass didn't sound too punchy or muddy, the features were excellent, and the price was very reasonable considering the comps. I decided to take it home, but reserved judgement until i could introduce it to my great room. My expectations weren't high based on the room and what i know of acoustics. To my surprise it performed very well. Given the size of the drivers, there isn't a great feeling of missing mid-range as there is in many a sound bar. The tweeters are nice and clear and the sub fills in the sound nicely. I have noticed that, as expected, the further the sub is from the bar, the more it sounds like they are two sources of sound. But, if the two are relatively close together it does create what sounds like one contiguous amalgam of sound. Movies sound great, tv sounds good, music sounds good / great depending on what it is, where it's placed, etc. The voice mode does a great job of bringing out the vocals on a tv show and the different sound modes are noticeably different. . As far as the sound goes i think i would give this bar a 4 out of 5 stars. If they would upgrade the sub a little bit i would gladly give it 5. However, when you take into account the overall package for the price, the features and function easily make up for that extra star. . Very happy buyer thus far.

PROS
  • It was tough to decide whether or not to give this sound bar a 4 or 5 star review, but the more i use it, the more i love it. The amount of features packed into this thing is simply astounding! i will list all of the things i love about this sound bar, it is honestly hard to find a negative thing to say about it so if i find one, i will post it. 1) it has a low enough clearance to sit below the sensor on my sony bravia 55" so that i can sit on my couch and still easily use the tv apps. 2) it is just attractive looking, it compliments the tv so well and almost disappears into my black tv stand so it almost seems as if the sound is still coming out of the tv but with a much higher quality. 3) the clarity of the bar is amazing, busy scenes still manage to give distinct sounds; both voice and music don't get jumbled in high action sequences and blu-ray movies have a slight surround to them even with no rear speakers. I will be adding the satellite speakers in the near future to complete/boost the surround effect. 4) night-mode is a life saver for apartment dwellers, the bass on this thing is very present so even at 6-8 it could still disturb your neighbors . Night-mode muffles the sound without having to adjust the bass level but still leaves enough to give a little rumble. 5) just about everything has bluetooth connection, but i was impressed at how stable the connection was even from the other end of my apartment in the closet. 6) hdmi arc is amazing, since this thing has 3 regular hdmi ports i can connect my devices straight into the soundbar and use it as a receiver to get the higher dolby sound without sacrificing image quality! this is one of the most underrated features on new tvs and soundbars. If you have a tv and soundbar with hdmi arc and you aren't using it, you are sorely missing out! . 7) setup with the hdmi arc was as easy as plugging it to the tv, 3 minutes of the easy-setup guide and i was good to go. . I originally purchased a klipsche r20-b set for a much lower price that had a great sound but no features (the sub could only be adjusted manually) and blocked my tv sensor. Was scared that sony wasn't going to have the sound quality of the klipsche, but the complete opposite happened. The sony has a much crisper and fuller sound in the bar and the subwoofer is a lot tighter with the fast bass lines. The only thing the klipsche did better was having a massive 10" speaker in the subwoofer that got very, very loud. If you are looking for a quality soundbar under $1000, this is the best you can find!
  • Love mine! . . I have two small issues with it, one that it goes back to the usb input once you leave the tv/arc mode. And you can't change the default input to something like hdmi1 or tv. . The second small issue is that the osd does not show when playing 4k content, it only displays on 1080p content. I think this can probably be fixed easily with a firmware update.
CONS
  • Was working fine. But the unit comes with writing on the box that will not support multiple speakers as advertised because the software will need updating. Funny enough the update came through last night to support the additional speakers but the new update disabled the sub woofer. After 2 hours with tech support sony advised us to return the item.
  • This sound bar is definitely not worth the money. If you watch tv or play a game with this sound bar you have to put the volume up close to the max. The flip is that it sounds amazing over bluetooth but not over the tv or from a gaming console. I would have returned this system but best buy only allows a 14-day return policy. If you want a great wireless sound bar just invest in a sonos. You will be a lot happier
  • This might be the most time consuming and frustrating piece of garbage i've ever invested my time and money in (and i say that coming off a divorce). When it works, which is rare, the volume balance between the tweets and sub are very off and you have zero control. I guess the system sensed my frustration and now the sub has dropped out all together. Zero customer support. Best buy says call sony, sony says call best buy. Last sony product i'll ever buy.

Sadly my speaker never got to me as my package went mia but i ended up buying it at our local electronic store and it's amazing! really great, but the down fall to it is sometimes the subwoofer doesn't work and you have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to work! other than that the sound comes out amazing! and the music bumps when i have family gatherings! it's wall mounted under a 55" sony tv!

Not to mention it has 4k pass through so i am future proof for upcoming 4k content."

Sony XBR65X930E 65-Inch 4K HDR Ultra HD TV 2017 Model

This is the brightest tv i have ever seen with amazing black levels (for an led) . It smokes my lg oled as a bright room "all around" tv. Its extremely tough and durable, but super heavy (80lbs). . In game mode its fast for fps. In cinema home/cinema pro it makes movies pop. The hdr is unreal. Wow! you have to see hdr on this thing. My jaw dropped. . Now lets talk about the cons. - its heavy. - its expensive. - a very faint amount of well-blended light can occasionally be seen in the 4 corners of the screen with 100% black background if a small, super bright image appears (like a white logo thats 20% of the screen size. This is due to the design of the slim backlight drive. However, this design also allows the tv to be as bright as airplane lights. Its there, but i've only seen it twice in the type of content i watch. No big deal. - android is clunky (what gives google? ). - the remote is god awful! its the worst remote on earth - biggest con. . Summary. Best tv ever. Hate the remote. Hate google's clunky android os.

Enjoy 4k hdr entertainment on our x930e with android tv. With the new slim backlight drive, this television offers extraordinary brightness in an ultra-thin design and with the incredible performance of the 4k hdr processor x1 extreme, everything you watch is improved to near 4k hdr quality.

I should start by saying i have only spent 1 day with the tv. The picture is amazing as expected. It is a very heavy tv. If you have a room that is sometimes bright and don't want to worry about burn in this is the clear choice vs oled. I don't think there is a competing led at the same price point. . My purchase was made through onecall. I was a little put off at first making a large purchase of a potentially delicate item from a 3rd party seller but honestly in the future i will specifically seek out onecall based on my experience so far. Within an hour of placing the order i received a call. I have heard of bait and switch tv sellers asking for additional $ to insure the shipment or additional $ to get the right tv so i was on guard. The call turned out to be a pleasant call to confirm shipping address and to inform me of the process of taking delivery. The tv was shipped upright attached to a pallet with a shock watch attached and inactivated. I will update if anything changes.

Sony XBR65X900E 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV 2017 Model

In short, this tv has the best overall picture quality available in a 4k 49" tv, with sites like rtings. Com reporting image quality on par, and better in some regards, than sony's x930e that costs 50% more. Only oled tvs look better. The android tv interface is very featureful, but occasionally slow. Under $1000, it's a bargain. Longer review follows. Updated review to 5 stars after android updates improved responsiveness of interface . . I resisted upgrading my 10 year old sharp aquos tft for many years, because it had ultra-wide viewing angles and could do everything a newer, larger tv could do. Meanwhile, tvs have gotten bigger and brighter, and sony, samsung, vizio, and lg have been pushing the boundaries of large-screen image quality in recent years. Now 4k resolution has created a clear dividing line, and given many people like myself a reason to upgrade our "good enough" tvs. I want another tv that i can use for many years without feeling left behind, so i wanted to find the best that i could fit in my small apartment. I couldn't find any 50" oled tvs, and felt that 55" was just too big for the available wallspace, so i evaluated all available lcd options in 48-50" sizes. This is the best. Many manufacturers cut features on the smaller models of their flagship line. Not sony, the 49 version has all the same bells and whistles as the 65 version: multi-zone local dimming, full 10-bit hdr support, amazing brightness. . Picture quality is stunning, jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring, and nothing short of fantastic. When you get past the klunky and slow interface and start watching movies and shows, the details pop, and your favorite well-mastered film will reveal new details in the background, particularly in darker areas. Blacks are true black, allowing the brightness to be higher without washing out shadow details. Multi-color gradients, like subtle differences in skin tone or areas of sky are well represented, and the array lighting helps prevent bloom around bright areas. The upscaling and dynamic range extension works very well for sdr content, though the picture can look overprocessed with too many of these features turned on. See my suggested settings in this review for a clean, unprocessed look. . Out of the box, there was too much digital smoothing and interpolation for my tastes, but i'm very sensitive to the "soap-opera effect" that fast motion filters can cause. I was very pleased at the array of controls for controlling motion filtering, but the names of the settings are completely inscrutable. Like the playstation and many other sony products, the user interface is charming but quirky. You can turn "reality creation" on or off, but the interface doesn t explain this means smart interpolated upscaling. The included manuals offered no definition. I figured out that if i set "motionflow" to the "truecinema" setting, the motion in films no longer looks like cheap video, but as an engineer, non-descriptive names make me want to cry. Picture settings include "cinema home, " and "cinema pro, " with no indication of the differences. And color settings include "warm" (which is self-exlanatory), and "expert 1" (which isn't). . Some reviews of the x900e had me worried about viewing angles, but the viewing angles are better than most lcd tvs. The x900e does dim significantly off-center, but it looks great at 45 degrees, and is still watchable at 60 degrees with only minor color shift. Watching a video from the side, you could easily forget that you aren t getting the best possible picture. . Now, the bad. I had high hopes for the sony android tv. It's probably the most expandable smart tv platform when it comes to games and connectivity with home automation. With a quad-core armv7 and 2gb of ram, i had assumed that the tv would be able to handle simple tasks like showing a menu or launching an app quickly. When i first tried the system, it was slow and cumbersome to use apps. There were delays of multiple seconds. It seems that after updates and letting the system build its cache, things are mostly responsive. I have found that an errant app can drag the system down, so be careful what you install. Apps may be running in the background without your knowledge. I installed an airplay streaming app that worked, but that kept switching the input back to the app. I tried closing the app using the android app manager, but it would happen again, meaning the app was still running. I uninstalled the app and all was well again. . On the bright side, the android tv is great for integration with other devices. It can control my philips hue lights, and my logitech harmony hub and elite remote were a breeze to set up and control the tv perfectly. The tv remote can control my apple tv, xfinity cable, and sony blu-ray player, so everything integrates nicely. The tv remote works so well for nearly every device that my logitech harmony remote is almost redundant and definitely unnecessary. . There is a dedicated button on the remote for netflix, and the included netflix app is very fast. I've seen the included netflix app bog down on many tvs, so i was relieved that the x900e not only handles netflix well, but 4k content looks great. You do need to set the picture settings manually for each input or app, so netflix will not share the same settings as hulu or the cable or the dvd. . I think the closest competition in the "small" 4k space ( 55 ) is samsung. They have their new qled technology, which is an incremental improvement that can result in great picture when combined with other advancements. Unfortunately, the samsung 49" qled is the q6f special edition, which has an inferior panel using "quantum dot overlay" instead of full quantum dot leds. The q9f may be leading the pack in large-screen tvs, but the q6f is probably not going to outperform the sony x900e on the small end, and it has a higher list price. I do envy the samsung cable management, which puts inputs on an external box with a single fiber optic cable running to the tv, but the sony supports more legacy input types like component, and even composite cables. Also, one less thing to potentially go wrong. . By the way, if you watch a variety of media types, and want the clearest settings possible, use these settings:. . Picture mode: custom or cinema home. Advanced settings:. Brightness: adv. Contrast enhance - low. Picture: cinema home or custom. Color: expert 1. Motionflow: truecinema. Cinemotion: high. Clarity: all settings off, or smooth gradation only. . Overall, i'm very pleased with my purchase, and the vendor world wide stereo did a great packing job.

Sony Xbr75x900e 75-inch 4k Ultra Hd Smart Led Tv 2017 Model (Television) FAQ.

I'm a tv director so i'm pretty picky about image quality, and getting a good value when i buy gear. After doing a ton of research i was leaning toward the samsung mu8000, and frankly i felt that paying $1300 for that tv was a bit too indulgent, even for me. Oled is also even more stunning but it didn't seem like the picture quality was worth all the extra money, basically twice as much. But a black friday deal on this unit at bb for just $200 more than the samsung tipped the scales and i took the plunge. . A quick tip on comparing tvs: when you go to a store, each brand's display models are purposely setup so the more expensive one has an obviously better picture. Yet that doesn't mean the cheaper tvs can't approach the same image quality, or sometimes beat it. With proper adjustment just about any tv these days can look pretty amazing. Plus, they won't input the same image to different brand tvs, so you can't really compare. It's a bit of a guessing game, and the best you can do is ask to adjust the settings, get a model to look as good as you can, and do the same for another model. But frankly, without the same image on both, it's a bit of a guessing game. I found the testing on rtings to be quite thorough, and that was my primary research method. . On the os, i don't know what the negative reviews about the android os are about, mine works well, very little lag or waiting. The first thing i did was update the firmware, so maybe that's been fixed in the update. Sure, when there's more network traffic it's a little slower than normal, but that's to be expected, and is a function of your bandwidth, not the tv. Also make sure you connect an actual ethernet cable, don't rely on wifi, it's typically much slower, even on 5g, and prone to signal dropouts. . First and foremost, the image quality is stunning. That's the main reason i got it, and i planned to bypass the potentially problematic smart tv functions and use my roku. And compared to my previous samsung 1080 hd tv, this sony 4k unit is pretty impressive. After setting it up (get a smpte color bars video on ytube and learn how to use it), everything was richer, even regular hd content was better than my old samsung. But hdr is supposed to be even more of a difference than 4k. . So then i dug deeper, and found that while 4k (ultra hd) is passed through from my roku 4 to the tv, hdr is not passed through (newer roku "ultra" models apparently do). So i just connected a lan line to the tv, and i now have both the roku and the smart tv functions working. Although i can't do an instant a/b comparison, in about 15 seconds i can switch between smart tv with hdr and the roku without hdr. On the same show, same scene. And yes, the hdr on this set seems a tiny bit better, a little more contrast and detail than non-hdr. But frankly, it's not as big a difference as i expected. Maybe as i watch more ocntent i'll find a bigger difference. But above all, either way gives a pretty stunning picture. . You also have to remember that a lot of the advances in image quality are true for all brands. 4k gives a big improvement, and hdr a little more. It has nothing to do with brands, it's the technology. So many tv's in the same price range can give you a pretty similar image. But the sony seemed jsut a bit more rich, with a bit more contrast, and contrast/ range is a key determinant in image quality. . I have just two gripes, but they aren't deal breakers for me:. 1. The menu options are pretty extensive, but on occasion the menu gets "stuck", when you hit the "home" menu button. Hitting the menu button a 2nd time doesn't make the menu go away as it should, and the only way to get it off the screen is to re-select the input. Other times it works as it supposed to. 2. I wish the picture adjustments i made could be translated among different inputs. In other words, you get it set for, say, online store in the smart tv app. Then you go to another source, say netflix through roku, and the picture is darker. Or sometimes you find differences even between different movies on the same source. And the "auto adjust" function on the tv should fix that in theory, but in practice i didn't like the auto function at all. So i'm constantly adjusting the brightness manually. But that's not necessarily the tv's fault. As the auto sensing technology gets better, i expect they'll have better code that will automatically keep the contrast ratios and color balance you've set across all input sources. . The sound isnt' bad for tv speakers, but after all, they're tiny, lightweight speakers, so you shouldn't expect much. Get an av receiver or a sound bar. . It took a while, but i got all my external devices to play nice with the sony remote, so that's pretty cool that i can do the typical functions on roku and my yamaha av receiver with just the sony remote. And it has all the necessary inputs and outputs, and tons of menu functions to control them. It took me a while to get arc working, but that was more on my receiver end (both the tv and the receiver need to have hdmi control turned on, and turn on arc on the receiver). . Regarding sony service, i've bought tons of gear from sony over the years, including top end broadcast cameras, sound systems, car stereo, and vaio computers. And i've also seen the quality and engineering go downhill over the years, too. In fact, my recent experiences with sony customer service on some top end vaio laptops was so frustrating i vowed never to buy another sony product again. So i had to have a really good reason to get this unit, and the picture quality was so compelling i took the plunge. I can only hope i don't regret this sony purchase. . Would i be just as happy with the samsung? maybe. Probably. But be sure to research the ads that you can't turn off. Samsung has built ads into their smart tv menus that you apparently can't disable at all. You can only disable some ads. That's a big turnoff for me, especially considering how much you pay for a samsung. -Notice from S. Anonymous, Rhode Island

- P. RitaIn short, this tv has the best overall picture quality available in a 4k 49" tv, with sites like rtings.

I was bent on getting a 75 inch tv and i really wanted to get oled; that left the lg tv with a $20, 000 price tag. So, next, i was bent on getting a samsung because i like the brightness of their screens. Samsung is charging $6000 for their 65" qled technology which is barely the next generation of technology. Looking at the rtings website reviews for best 75 inch tvs, they mentioned that the best mid range 75 inch tv was this sony 75" x900e. I did the research. It is not oled in terms of measurable quantities (it is very good) but i will tell you that the actual viewing experience is 99% of what it is with an oled tv. The blacks are inky wet black and the the brights are amazing. I can watch this tv outside and it looks great. It very bright. The aesthetics are beautiful. It has a very small bezel, a the glass front has the same allure as fine crystal. It has plenty of adjustments for those who like to tweak and i think it looks great with the settings out of the box. The picture quality, is just amazing and again i can't stress enough how beautiful the hdr (high dynamic range) is. Deep rich blacks, plenty of mid tones and excellent highlights. For the price difference i would buy this tv every time and not really miss any real perceivable differences in oled. Sony deserves a huge compliment for creating such a beautiful tv and picture as such a great price. I got mine for approximately $3200 and that is great at this point in time. . If you are looking for a beautiful tv and picture, especially one in the 75 inch class, mid range and reasonable pricing then this is your tv!

Very bright. Hdr is fantastic. Video processing does seem to be an improvement over the x900e. This review also is based on sony fulfilling its promise to release the dolby vision firmware update in january 2018. The biggest complaint is that the screen's anti-reflective coating doesn't seem that great when compared to a range-topping samsung from 4-years ago that this tv replaced. Though it's in a very bright room. The mounting brackets seem designed to make installation with the sony wall mount bracket easier at the expense of making installation with standard vesa mounts more difficult.

Sony CT290 Ultra-slim 300W Sound Bar Bluetooth 2017 model

Wow. The fidelity and sound quality of our music and movies is just outstanding with this. We don't watch movies on dvd or tv; we almost solely watch via our computer via dvd (netflix mostly) or else streaming videos and shows. I also use the computer to play music; and have used the bluetooth on my computer for some pretty decent quality speakers for music in particular. I had a plug in set of speakers (mid range) for the general computer sound but these just blew them out of the water. The sound quality of these speakers brings out background sounds in some of the songs that i didn't even pay attention to before. I also use my online store music app on my android moto x to play my music, and the sound is amazing. Considering that it's coming from my moto x (which has horrible speakers, honestly, ) it's so nice. . It was easy to set up once my stupid computer's bluetooth was fixed (i ended up getting a bluetooth usb. Super cheap and a good solution to my "older" bluetooth that has always been an issue on my computer. ) it was a cinch to set up to my moto x, just went into bluetooth settings and paired. . I love how it has different settings you can choose: movie, music, voice, night mode. Plus you can control the bass speakers separately. There is a bluetooth connection between the speaker and the bass speaker, which is less wires and more versatility of placement. I obviously use the movie and music settings mostly, but the night mode is nice for if you have company and don't want to blast the sound (it lessens the less critical sounds and only gives you the more important noises in your movies. ). . Definitely worth every penny, if i had known you could stream such awesome music and movie tracks through something without fuss and technical savvy i would have purchased one sooner!

Bring movies and music to life with this ultra-slim bluetooth sound bar, plus wireless subwoofer that delivers cinematic sound and powerful bass in any room. Stream music easily from your smartphone and even control your sound bar and tv with a single remote. All in a stylish, space-saving design that s a perfect fit for any tv.

This is the perfect sound bar for someone with limited space, just wants a small footprint, and/or wants good sound but not a lot of volume. I use this sound bar with my samsung tv in the living room. It's connected via fiberoptic cable and then i use bluetooth to connect to the sub-woofer. It has a great sound but low volume. I had a few larger setups in that room in the past but i found that i never cranked it up that much so this one works well for me. . The other thing that was a pleasant surprise was that on lower volumes it does not sound muffled like both of the sound bars i had before. (they were both samsung). . Set up was really easy and it was easy to mount.

- C. NewellExcellent sound bar to replace the stock built in speakers of my panasonic plasma tv. The clarity and quality of the sound is so much better. I can understand what people are saying without having the volume too loud. Thanks to the sub i actually have bass now. However during low level volume it is very underwhelming. Closer toward top end volume do you notice and feel the bass. If your looking for real bass buy a different unit. Other than that i'm very satisfied overall. I love the fact that i can connect my phone via bluetooth. Currently i have the sound bar mounted underneath my tv which is mounted on a swivel wall mount and the sub on the floor.

Amazing! got it on a black friday deal for $148. Hooked to my sony 4k 55 and wow! what a difference! . . While there are other people with bigger homes that might want to have a 5. 1 channel surround sound, this little bad boy does the trick for our living room. We watched a couple of movies and the difference was huge coming from the regular tv speakers. I recommend this for anyone looking to upgrade for a few bucks.

Oct 2016 update to review below: the issue i experienced below (having to do a system reset after listening to hi res music off the usb drive) appeared to be related to the sony usb drive itself! from experience never pull the usb drive out of the htnt5 while the unit is on even if not playing music at the time! even tho the usb music played fine after that, something made the subwoofer stop playing until a system reset was done. I reformatted the 64gb usb drive at the lowest level, copied music back onto it and all seems well now. I do not use the surround sound feature. . Other observations. I have had the htnt5 for at least 4 months now, and had it sitting in front of the tv which makes the speakers somewhat face upwards. I felt i could not hear the voices enough (even with the voice add 2 on), so. I put the wall mount brackets on the soundbar, and then put it back in front of the tv which now makes it sit upright a lot more now (if your tv screen is high enough, else raise your tv up to be above the speaker). Voices seem a bit better for those of us with a little older or rock and rolled out ears! . And finally, re my sony customer service observations below, 5 months and a dozen calls later, sony finally sent a check buying back my previous htnt3 soundbar. So be aware of the glacial pace of this process should you ever need service for your sony product and your need to continually push the process. . Original review:. I have all sony equipment in my home. 2 hd tvs, 2 new blurays, 2 wireless bluetooth speakers, 2 soundbars, hearon headphones, and have extensively used and spent money on sony equipment over the past 8 years. . My prior sony htnt3 soundbar froze up during a firmware upgrade. Called for warranty service. 20 excruciating hours later after dealing with sony's 'repair' service united audio, i am still waiting for my htnt3 'buyback' check from sony (the buyback amount is fair tho, i will give them that if i do receive the check). But. Since i was 'all sony', in the meantime i went out and purchased the sony htnt5 soundbar on sale so i could use all the integrated features. I have had the htnt5 for a few months at this point. . Initially this soundbar sounded great and still does when it is fully working. Adjustments and features are high end and the build is quality. Bass does not seem as tight as the htnt3 was. Interface to the features and music is much superior to the htnt3. Songpal allows control from your phone if desired else the unit itself will connect to your home network to play dlna server music (hi res music is only playable on an attached usb drive however). Unit has multiple amplifiers attached to each speaker (4 tweeters and 2 midrange in the bar itself). Hires dsd 2. 8mhz files such as 'thriller' sound incredible (note that the unit does not play dsd 5. 6mhz but does play flac files). . But. It seems that since the latest firmware upgrade from sony (which added the 'wireless surround' feature that few will actually use), the unit has been acting finicky. . The issue is now, every single time i listen to music through the usb drive (which is also a sony 64gb usb), and then turn the input to another device like hdmi 1 for my tv, the wireless subwoofer quits working! i have tried selective system resets to no avail. I have reset the cables and the usb (all the things sony had me do when i called about the prior soundbar's issues). The only thing that brings the subwoofer back is doing a complete factory reset! . . I recently also bought the new sony hearon wireless headphones, hoping to take advantage of the hi res music capabilities of the unit and ldac wireless features. The sound is great with or without the headphones, but again, the minute you listen to music, headphones or not, the subwoofer quits working, and back to the factory reset menu! . I am hoping that someone from sony reads these reviews as this is quite frustrating, and calling sony support only adds to the frustration. . So in the end, if you are just looking for a quality soundbar for your tv this is a great unit and can fill a room with sound quite easily, this is the unit for you. If you want to use other features such as hi res music, bluetooth headphones, screen mirroring, etc. Then use this review as caveat emptor for your research as results may vary until sony works out the kinks with this unit. The htnt3 was available for less than 2 years, this may be the case with the htnt5. . Finally, in the interest of complete disclosure, it is interesting to me that all the 'vine free equipment' reviews of this product are glowing reviews, and the only reviewers reporting issues with this unit are people who actually paid for it. I tend to skip vine reviews as i have a hard time believing that someone who receives something for free can really review it with a critical eye. After all, caveat emptor means let the buyer beware.

I have had this soundbar since august and really love it. Suddenly a week ago i started loosing audio after it ran for a while. Tried everything under the sun but the issue kept repeating itself. Finally with a service plan i was able to replace it with a new one. The issue continued with the new one and was very frustrating. As a last measure i looked at the manual. I saw the warning about making sure the vents were clear. Reminding me that a few weeks i added the wall hanging legs to make the bar more upright and pushed it up against my panny zt60. Now as a last resort i checked the back and felt the vents very warm and pulled it out about 4". Problem solved. Reading all the reviews i am assuming that a lot of issues people are having could be caused by heat build up. Lack of circulation. Now again all working as it should. Surprising sony or any other professionals are not including blocking of vents as a check when putting customer through the paces. Love this unit and reccomend without reservation. Just wanted to pass this on hoping to eliminate some peoples frustrations.

If you have a sony hdtv and want a sony sound bar, this is the one. I originally bought the lower tier one, the htct790 but ended up returning it because it didn't sound great. This one does. . After buying a sony hdtv i wanted to replace an aging yamaha sound bar. My old sound bar sounded good but i wanted something:. . 1) slim. My previous soundbar was tall and used to hide the bottom part of the screen. This sound bar is slim and doesn't suffer the same problem. In fact, this is as slim as it gets. . 2) plays nice with the tv. My old soundbar, like most, was connected by toslink (optical cable). I had to juggle between remotes, one to control the tv, one to control the volume / settings. . I got tired of that and opted for this sony soundbar which supports bravia sync (hdmi cec). Now whenever i turn the tv on the sound bar starts automatically. Turning off the entire system is just a matter of pressing the on/off button of the tv remote. . This, by the way, works with other bravia sync enabled products, such as the ps4. Turning on the ps4 controller turns on the ps4, which in turns powers on the tv, soundbar and subwoofer. . Extremely convenient. . The volume can also be controlled with the tv remote. . I barely use the soundbar remote - only to tweak settings from time to time. And this is not even required, the soundbar settings are also available through the bravia sync menu of the tv. . 4) connected. . I wanted a bluetooth sound bar to play music from my phone. The htct790 has that and much more. It supports google cast and spotify out of the box which i like a lot. The quality of direct streaming from spotify rather than bluetooth is noticeable and it doesn't drain my phone battery. . 3) sounded better than my old sound bar. . And it does. Dialogues are clear, movies sound good and music sounds great.

This sound bar is elegant and so far i really like the crispness of the spoken word. It was delivered today. I had difficulty finding out which hdmi input was the arc input because the labeling was on the bottom of the bar and i was tilting the bar to look at the connections which are not labelled except with the letter "a". From the diagram in the instructions i saw that the arc connector was located at the end of the row next to the diagonal in the plastic. Later, i found the labels at the bottom. I have connected my hdmi inputs to one of the inputs on the bar so that the bar can split off the sound there and send the video through the arc connection but arc allows sound to travel in the other direction too, from the tv to the sound bar. . I had a red light on my woofer after powering up the bar so i hit the two buttons at the back of the woofer and got a green light after it "linked" to the bar. I have yet test the system on a 4k movie but i look forward to that. . The shipping package was amazing. So well protected and nothing was missing. I took my time hooking up ethernet, hdmi and read as much of the manual as i cared to before i was overcome by my desire to hear the system working. I was not disappointed with regular tv. I am not sure about the sub woofer yet. Time will tell. I have not tried out all the features but i'll post more information when i've had a chance to explore some more. . I still haven't immersed myself in the user manual but i couldn't resist setting up a bluetooth connection to my ipad and going through my music collection with a variety of music types. I loved it - carol welsman, jimi hendrix, botti, pettruciano, bill evans, oxford choir, beatles, yo yo mar. All terrific. The setup is easy and displays on the tv. Bluetooth paired right away. For bluetooth make sure you use the sound bar bluetooth and not the tv bluetooth for easier control. On the sound bar you have to set the bluetooth up as receiving or transmitting in the sound bar settings. Transmit for headphones or speakers. Receive for phone or tablet. . I'll have to try the usb connections. There is a usb3 connection as well as a usb 2 connection. I have a ps3 that i can hookup and i just set up an appletv to one of the sound bar hdmi ports as well. . It can be a little tricky at first but remember that the arc connection on your tv and sound bar will allow you to select inputs on your sound bar or on your tv as long as both are compatible. I have a sony 4k tv so it's fully compatible. If you have your tv selected on the sound bar you may still want to select netflix or online store through your tv (my tv has an android os). This is ok but remember to go back to the sound bar to select the cable input if you want to use the cable dvr for regular television. You can change the on-screen label for the sounder hdmi connection but there's no option to customize the label (like my sony 4k tv), you have to choose from a preset list which is short and lacking. There are more features to try out but that's it for now. Very pleased so far. . I am still pleased with this sound bar and i will leave the rating at 5 stars but i wanted to make a note of an occasional glitch which other people may experience. I am not 100% sure which device causes the glitch, the sound bar or the tv so no rating change. Since my connections are made through the sound bar i suspect it may be the cause of the glitch, which happens infrequently and can be resolved. When switching from a source other than the cable box back to cable, a message appears on the tv that says there is no hdmi connection. So it appears that the hdmi signal from the cable box/dvr is not getting through the sound bar to the arc connection even though nothing has been changed. At one point the sound bar remote would not take me to the home page even after i changed the batteries in the remote. . I have written to sony about the issue because i have troubleshooted the problem quite extensively. Cables, cable box, sound bar, connections have all been swopped and performed power on reset of tv and sound bar together and independently. For the moment what seems to work is to power down the tv, which puts the sound bar into standby initially and then powers it down. After 1-2 minutes, power the tv back on and the problem goes away. Sony suggests removing hdmi cables from the sound bar and unplugging it for 2 minutes and if this does not work, do a factory reset which is in the sound bar menu. Those two actions are not very convenient so i have not tried them yet. Sony claims that the problem will go away with a factory reset. I have my doubts but if it happens again i will try that also. . I suspect that somewhere in the hardware or software logic the switching fails and a reset is needed. I have written to sony to say that the message is indicative of a systemic problem. I have not seen other posts on the sony web site however. The message appears about every 1-2 weeks. I did return the first sound bar and get a replacement. The replacement behaved perfectly for a week and i had one instance of the issue. Switching the tv off for 2 minutes or so fixed it until the next time. This issue may not show up for other people but i would be interested to know if it does. Even though i switched out the cable dvr it's possible that the problem could be the dvr because it shows up when i switch back to the cable box. There may be handshaking over the arc connection that goes wrong but i'm speculating. Please let me know if you experience the same thing in a comment to this review. Thank you. . I just ordered the new 4k appletv. Should be fun to play with.

Bought 2 of them a month ago-so far alls well-astounding sound-greatfor elderly and hard of hearing-vocals are clear and sub is great-my rooms 12x14 and sounds loud enough-couldn't use rear speakers as room is so small-wouldn't pay-usually don't go past 20 on soundbar unless i'm on netflix movie-i live in garden apt with neighbors lol-all in all a great 4 way system-its advertised as a 3 way but the super tweeter makes it a 4 way design-i always did like multiple drivers-i'm a previous owner for many yrs of the infinity kappa 8s-a 4 way syst by the way, if you want atmos bar the only diff is it will allow you to set up spkrs around the house-24 i believe-so if you only want better sound reg the tv spkrs-htnt5 is the way to go otherwise the xtra expense will buy you nothing

Ahhh this beat bar rocks the house! pay attention to directions, but once wired up it wasn't to difficult of an install.

S. Fabian, Connecticut

My only complaint is that it did not come with the optical audio cable that i needed

Z. Kimberly, City of Kingston upon Hull says

The sound quality is amazing! the set up from start to finish took less than an hour, and we were streaming music.

. Cathy, Rhode Island

Very cool. works great. sounds great

R. Veronica, Bromley says

This soundbar is special. Sound quality competes with very high end soundbars with much higher price points. I'm lookin at you sonos and bose! 3 hdmi in and 1 hdmi arc out is an excellent feature. Hi-res audio, wireless multi room and bluetooth/nfc capability are all awesome too!

. Mathis, Missouri

Picture quality is good. It does a weird soap opera/home video effect, but you can change the picture mode to movie. When you change it to that mode it makes the color a little yellow, but then you can change the color to standard and it makes it look more normal. . The sound quality is good. We have it connected with our samsung tv through hdmi arc. It tends to be a little finicky, not sure if it's the tv or the sound bar though. Once you get it up and running for a session, it works fine, except for when you are running hulu, where each commercial break has to reinitialize the soundbar, so you miss a few seconds of audio. . It was easy to setup, basically plug and play. We hooked it up to two sony wireless rear speakers and the connection was really easy there as well.

G. Anonymous, Basse-Normandie says

The sound is amazing along with the built technology.

. Powell, Brighton and Hove says

This sound bar is amazing! the front firing tweeters really help you hear the dialog while watching a movie. Sub is nice too. The remote is very helpful with a seperate volume for the bar and the sub.

. Susan, Florida

I have installed the nt5 couple days ago together with sony 93d 55" 4k/hdr. The setup was flawlessly quick, the sound quality is much better than i expected from a thin soundbar. The bass can be a bit low sometime depends on which movies/audio you are watching or listening to. The only major problem i had was with netflix streaming where the audio volume is so low that i have to max out sometime, is this something everyone is experiencing ? i will have a pair of srs-sr5 coming tomorrow and i can't wait to plug them in for a surround experience. :) . I will post a review here once it is done .

F. Matherly, Rheinland-Pfalz says

Sony is a very trusted brand in my household, and i have experience with their computers, cameras, and more. For me this ht-nt5 premium hi-res sound bar was a big upgrade as i have been without any kind of home theater setup for a long time. I used to have (many years ago) a wired surround sound system with subwoofer and 5 individual speakers that were connected via a maze of wires and power cords. Once i took that out, i was leery of trying any such product again until they started having a wireless option such with this product. . I have paired this sound bar and subwoofer with two sony srs-zr5 wireless speakers in my main living room. Setup is surprisingly simple as you just have to get the tv connected with an hdmi cable, plug in the power for the bar and subwoofer, and follow some general setup steps on the screen. When adding the wireless speakers, i simply had to plug in their power cords and use the on screen surround sound setup function to pair the speakers and test the sound volume and quality. All of this took me about 30 minutes to set up which is wonderful considering my own personal history with home theater equipment. My only complaint with the sound bar itself is that the ports on the back are a little difficult to access. Granted i can understand the design to some degree as it needs to be compatible with setting the bar on the tv stand as well as mounting on the wall depending on your needs and preference. . Simply calling it part of a surround sound system is not really a fair assessment of this sound bar. It has a few specific features which i am very pleased with and very few detractors. I will admit that i am a novice when it comes to hi-res audio, but the sound quality out of the bar and sub-woofer is fantastic, especially on the very high and very low ends of the spectrum. In my experience, this is that is one of the most problematic areas when trying to find the right sound system. So far, i have used this bar with some of my favorite movies and tv shows as well as with a wide variety of music in order to see, or rather hear, its capabilities. In fact, on a couple of occasions, i have moved the wireless speakers to different rooms and used the free sony songpal app on my smartphone to link the speakers together. With that, i am able to play music off my phone, usb flash drive, or my networked computer and have it play simultaneously in three different rooms. Since i really love have music playing oftentimes when i am at home, this has been one of my favorite features. . This has really impressed me from a design and aesthetic perspective as well. I am using the bar on the same stand as my tv, just sitting in front. It has a very low profile which you can barely notice unless you are right up by the screen. The display elements are very subtle yet equally easy read and understand. Overall, i would highly recommend this product if you want a relatively easy sound system to setup and learn. I find myself using it all the time.

I. Gina, East Sussex

Great product with very good sound. Only wish was that connection to srszr5 surround speakers did not require re-connection when switching from stereo to surround movie mode. Usually use app instead of the sound bar's menu to reestablish the surround.

X. Dorothy, Windsor and Maidenhead says

Great sound! a little fiddly with certain inputs (xbox one), so connected this directly to the tv instead, but it works great with the ps4. Works well as a bluetooth speaker and being able to connect to it with bluetooth headphones is really cool. . Pair with a bravia tv for maximum win.

N. Julie, Picardie

By far the best sound bar/subwoofer combo i've ever listened to with a price under $1, 000. . Super easy to setup. It comes with a magnetic speaker grill that just snaps into place over the sound bar. I didn't mount to the wall, but i read the instructions. It looks like you would just screw in a couple wall screws, and then hang the sound bar. We might move here soon so didn't want to do that. . Aesthetics are nice. Instead of a long, thin rectangle, the sound bar is flat and curved. Both devices are black. Gorgeous design. . I used 3 of the 4 available hdmi inputs (cable box, blu-ray player, and xbox). All three sound amazing, with plenty of low-end that was clearly missing when it was just the tv speakers before. . I've been pairing it to my iphone with bluetooth almost every day to listen to music around the house. The sound quality is so rich and clear. . We also paired two additional sony srs-zr7 rear speakers (bought separately), and they work perfectly. . For the price, i don't see a single con.

T. Finch, Hounslow says

Probably not the best option if you are serious about home theater sound. But this can't be beat for ease of setup. Good volume, handles movie soundtracks well, but not a great choice for music. Looks great with my wall mounted 55" sony too.

Y. Rochelle, Texas

Initially i wasn't very thrilled with my purchase of this soundbar. The sound from music played from my phone via bluetooth was awesome, but when i tried watching dvd's the soundbar was really quiet overall. I also found myself turning it up during speaking, and down during sound effects and music which was annoying to go back and forth, in addition to there being a slight lag between the audio and visual. After going through the owner's manual and tweaking the settings however, i am 100% satisfied. The owner's manual will walk you through adjusting the settings if you run into any of the issues that i did.

Q. Elizabeth, North Yorkshire says

The product works fine and was delivered on time. My only complaint is that at this price, surround sound speakers should have been included.

O. Imelda, Tameside

I spent quite a bit of time researching soundbars in this price range. I listened to samsung, vizio, sonos and polk in the various retailers. I was looking at all of the soundbar systems that were either 5. 1 or could be expanded to 5. 1. Even though technically, the sony ht-nt5 can only be a 4. 1 system as it lacks a dedicated center channel, it is one of the best sounding that i came across and also has a better feature set than the competition. The ht-nt5 by itself with its companion subwoofer sounds really good for tv, movies and also music. Even without a dedicated center channel speaker, any dialogue is brought to the forefront and is easy to discern (it also has the option to accentuate dialog, but i didn t find it necessary). I added a pair of sony srs-z5 wireless speakers for the rear channels. It was easy to link up these speakers, as you can do it via the nt5 setup menu on the tv or use the songpal app on your phone or tablet. One thing sony does well is supply the user with a lot of system options. There are plenty of tweaks you can set in regards to audio, video, inputs etc. After i added the two rear speakers i was able to set the speaker distances and volume levels in the sony setup menu. One feature this system has that is lacking in most other soundbars is the fact that it has 3 hdmi 2. 0a inputs that also support 4k. The sonos system i was also looking at doesn t have a single hdmi input! i have a htpc and a cable box connected to two of the inputs. Initially i was using hdmi-arc from my lg tv. While audio from the cable box worked fine, the audio from my htpc would intermittently cut out. So, i switched it from arc to the optical input and that seemed to resolve all issues. From what i ve read hdmi-arc can be a bit flakey anyway. Both the tv and the soundbar have to understand each other perfectly. However, i do have one problem with the soundbar and you will see it mentioned here and some of the av forums. That is, its supposed to power up with the last input used on the soundbar when it last shutdown. But 75% of the time it fails to do that and defaults to the usb input. This means you have to pick up the remote, press the home button to bring up the menu and then select the appropriate input. Kind a pain - right. I called sony support about this. They stated it s supposed to always power on with the last input used and this is not normal behavior. So, after trying various resets and stuff, they said somethings wrong with mine and sent me a replacement (well, online store did). Unfortunately, the replacement does the exact same thing. So, i guess i m going to have to put up with this. By the way, the two times i called sony support i got a live operator right away no waiting. That s pretty good these days. The home network option on the songpal app actually does a good job of detecting and using any media servers you may have on your home network. It found my htpc and also my squeezebox music server. Pros:. * excellent sound for tv, movies and music. * wirelessly expandable. * 3ea 4k hdmi inputs. * songpal app. * when laying flat on a table it has a very low profile. Cons:. * when powering up it almost always defaults to the usb input.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

. Jessica, Lambeth says

System sounds great but is let down by one huge issue. The 5 rubber feet on the bar are not tall enough. When placed on a flat surface the right 2 feet do not make contact with tv unit. This is because the bar itself is making contact and can cause a rattle at high volume. I'm on my 2nd unit and have tried both on 8 different flat surfaces including a 100% flat granite work surface. I've also visited 2 different stores to examine their display units, exactly same problem. . Sony's support has been appalling, spoke to a guy on the phone who basically didn't believe me. Emailed them and got a generic reply saying they manufacture their goods to suit a wide variety of people? contacted john lewis who i bought it from and they were really helpful but also got nowhere with sony. Sony told them they would supply 5 extra feet to stick on the existing ones but only if i paid for them! . . I've now solved the problem by buying some suitable sized feet online. It is almost unbelievable that sony could release such an expensive item with the wrong sized feet. Do they do no quality testing at all? their customer support is the worst i have ever come across.

I have been using the sony ht-nt5 soundbar for 3 weeks. It is a major improvement over the tv speakers. The soundbar creates a nice, spacious sound image. It has plenty of power even for reasonably large rooms. However, if you (like me) is expecting a high-end sound quality you may be disappointed. The sony ht-nt5 reproduces well the high and low frequencies, but it completely lacks midrange. So, do not expect nothing close to the performance of a real floorstanding loudspeaker presence and smoothness. Regarding design, the sony ht-nt5 is elegantly built in both hardware and software. Installation and set-up was easy, and the soundbar control is effectively integrated with the tv as well as the external devices (in my case: apple tv, cable box, blu-ray) all connected through hdmi directly into the soundbar. It has plenty of functionalities, probably more than one may need to use. Considering the sound average only performance, the price is too high. Conclusion: the sony ht-nt5 is a good, practical and well designed choice for a soundbar. However, do not expect high-end sound on this model.

Well well well. This is one of the worst electronic device i have purchased. The unit have stopped working 2 times within 6 times. The first time the system stopped responding was just after a little over a month from the purchase date. Since i couldn't return back for refund, i got a ticket opened with sony support and send it back to them for troubleshooting. The united radio, that takes care of the sony repairs, they found that main board or something went bad and it will take few weeks to get the part. Therefore, sony sent me a new replacement and i was quite happy with that. Until couple very recently, it again started taking long time to power up or power off. Finally, the sound stopped coming from the soundbar. Input selection option won't work anymore. Even when it'll power up, the menu icon won't show up, therefore no way to go to setup meu to troubleshoot anything. And when once somehow it did let me in to setup menu, which btw was painfully slow to navigate, the system got hung when i did the factory reset. This almost reminded me when i had the problem with my original unit. Finally, i did hard reset by holding the volume down button on the soundbar and the power button for few seconds. Again, when the system booted up, the menu icon didn't show up. Hitting the input button on the remote or the soundbar will not change the input. Hitting 'home' button the remote will not do anything. Hitting the voice or clear audio+ button will not do anything. In fact, on the soundbar display, the screen will go blank when i hit those 2 buttons. I again called sony support, got a new ticket opned and sent the soundbar to them for repairs. Let's see how long will they take this time and whether they'll send me a new one or repaired one. At this point i would prefer a repaired one since several customers had almost a similar issue and i hope the technician knows the root cause of the issue and fix it for good. And even if it happens again in the future, i just wish it happens after the warranty period is done (yes, you heard it right), because i can then dump this one for good and go with yamaha yas2700 or something else that'll be available at that time. But i won't be choosing sony anymore for at least the sound bar.

I've had this product for about 2 and a half months and i'm already having issues with it. Beach camera is no help at all. They have washed their hands and told me to call sony. It turns on but no sound. I've tried everything. I am sure i have connected it correctly. Arc to arc hdmi connection. The menu button does not work nor does the input button. The volume numbers go up and down strangely but no sound. Watch out for beach camera. I think they sold me a floor model for full price. I can't prove it but the way it was packed in the box seemed fishy.

Worked well for 2 months. Hasn't worked since. Randomly stops working. Won't stop on any input other than m serv. If i am lucky enough to get it working now it may last for a half hour. I have an older sony bar that works flawlessly. Bought this for my mom for christmas last year. Complete opposite experience.

F. Joanna, Rotherham

After hooking this up via the hdmi cable to the arc hdmi of my sony bravia xbr-65x850d it worked great along with my srs-zr5 surround speakers. The next day, the volume coming out of the sound bar was less than half of what it was on day 1. I was on the phone with support for about 2 hours making all sorts of adjustments with no results. I even had the voice on up2 and the subwoofer volume on 12. I am so disappointed and don't know what else to do. I will change my review if i can get this working correctly again.

J. Jackson, New Jersey says

Purchased from a certain big blue box retailer, but what was once a beautiful sound bar is now basically a glorified paperweight. We had it connected via hdmi into its arc port, which we used to facilitate the wireless surround sound when connected to 2x srs-zr7 originally. This was all hooked up to a sony xbr65x930d and worked for a long while, probably close to a year or so. Then we ended up swapping the sony tv after dead pixels came about, and managed to do a warranty exchange for an lg oled65b6p as its replacement. . This is when things started to go down hill. And for lg oled owners out there, on the forums this seems to be a trending issue with this particular sound bar and lgs tvs when relying on hdmi arc connectivity. . Typically the sound bar, side speakers, sony wireless sound connectivity, and tv would power on with a single press of a power button thanks to the hdmi arc facility. This was ideal, and the sound quality was the best i had ever heard in a three piece home entertainment setup. This stopped being the case maybe six months into owning the lg tv in conjunction with the sound bar, and then the sound bar stopped working altogether. First it started with long startup time. Then came input lag and unresponsiveness from both the unit and the menu screen (factory resetting it did not resolve it or even hard resetting it via buttons). Updating the firmware didn't solve anything either. I finally sent it in for a warranty repair, and received it after 2 weeks of shipping it out (this was all in feb-march of this year). Sony explained the base-board (or motherboard) was defective, so they replaced it and when we got it back all seemed right with the world again, for maybe another five months. . Fast forward into the end of august, and our sound bar now takes upwards of 5minutes to power up again. But it powers up at least right? well, it would help if it worked afterwards but instead we're greeted with disturbingly long input lag, again. Following the input lag, we are unable to switch the function of the soundbar from the tv input setting, so no more bluetooth, and no more hdmi inputs for additional devices, again. Then the wireless sound refuses to startup, and eventually trying to access the menu becomes impossible, once more. . This all would not be so bad if at the very least sound would still play after attaching the optical cable and just using that alone with the tv. But no. Sony designed this monstrosity to only function for a short period of time, after which, they expect you to either cough up money for repairs (since it is beyond the warranty period now) or purchase a new unit. I have a vizio sound bar i purchased for less than $300 that is still working like a charm, but a $700 behemoth from someone like sony failed twice in two years. That is unacceptable. I did not buy a lease on a sound bar, i purchased a fully furnished product, or so i thought. . Just for the record, we also do not have any children or pets in the house, and the sound bar is left untouched unless movies are being watched in the room it is located in which is perhaps three to four times a week. This is all to say that there was no way external damage could have happened, ever, and should not have had any reason to stop working even after going through an intensive repair within its first year of ownership. . I would like to end this rant/review by saying if you are willing to spend this much money on a sound bar or home entertainment system, and what drew you to this unit was its wireless surround sound capabilities, then stay a continent away from sony, and all the ilk they produce. Stick to sonos if you need wireless, or go traditional with bose, vizio, or even samsung for your sound needs. . Sony used to be a staple brand in my household and i am so sad to say we will never be doing any business with them again even if i was to receive their products as gifts at this point. We have two useless & expensive, but exceptionally high audio fidelity zr7 speakers that we cannot use with this defective sound bar (aside from standalone bluetooth), and even had to replace a 4k sony tv which otherwise had incredible picture for its class of tv because it formed visibly noticeable dead pixels. Not to mention the need for two repairs on a $700 device in such a short amount of time. . What happened sony?

W. Patricia, Staffordshire

I would love to give this item 5 stars but its not even a year and i stopped using it a few months ago due to it being too slow. When powering on, it stays stuck on "please wait" for about 10 minutes and then about another 5 mintues when you try to switch sources. And powering off is just as bad! about 5-10 minutes just to turn off. I loved this item in the beginning but now i am just very disappointed.

H. Gina, Birmingham says

Bought this product at best buy. The sound is not much better that the tv. Hard to hook up and operate. Sound would shut off periodically. Poor investment.

G. Juliana, Wirral

Audio video sync absolutely sucks. I spend usually about 5-10 minutes trying to sync up the voices coming out of the soundbar, to the actors voicing the dialogue on the screen. It usually comes close. But its always a little off and takes you right out of the immersement of the show. Go with a receiver instead. I regret choosing a soundbar for tv and will probably end up using it in the kitchen strictly for music. I took me awhile to pick up on the audio sync issues. It's not immediately apparent.

C. Candy, Arkansas says

Tons of problems. First one was super quiet at max volume. Second one goes silent requiring you to unplug it and plug it back in every couple of days.

B. Kimberly, Auvergne

I know this is not a high-end soundbar, but honestly the sound is mediocre. There's absolutely no midrange whatsoever. Its decently loud (it is *definitely* not 400w as its specs say) for a small room, but i was expecting a much higher quality sound. There's no warmth to the sound. Very disappointed. I'm returning the unit.

N. Mary, Nova Scotia says

The good: easy to setup, control, and tweak. Nicely designed too, and puts out plenty of power for my purpose. . The bad: every time the tv is turned on, the sound bar takes over the screen and asks you to select an input. Does not provide an ability to start up at the last input selected, nor does it allow you to select a default input. Mine likes to return to the "usb" input each time, despite having nothing connected in that way. Sony customer support and community failed to find a solution for this. Worst of all, after 3 weeks of use, mine has fallen into some boot up death cycle. I continue to get a decorative screen with no content. It sits there for a few seconds, goes black, cycles off, and starts all over again. I spent an hour with sony's customer service swapping out cables, changing outlet locations, even moving it to another a/v hub in my house. Nothing worked and sony said they were out of solutions. Returning it today for another one to see if this was an isolated problem.

Sound is good. I didn't find the difference between the soundbar and my 65" tv to be overwhelming or vary noticeable, but it is more clear, and music sounds great. Soundbar seemed to work with the google home 3 out of 5 times, and would hang a require a reset frequently. After 6 months of ownership, unit would not work at all. Now to send in for warranty repair with this horrible customer service. If you are going to buy i suggest you plan ahead and make sure you have room to hold onto the box for a full year. Sadly, would not recommend; sounds okay, but too many problems. . Update: sent in for repair, which cost money to purchase a box. Repair was timely, service center found the unit to be defective and replaced all internal electronics. Got the sound bar back, and it literally worked for one week before the unit was again unable to produce sound from the tv. Called sony and asked for a refund, and you know those cheapskates said no. Only option is to send it in, again. And that means buying another box. This cycle will likely continue until the unit is out of warranty, and i am out $700. Avoid at all costs.

Truthfully one of the worst products i've ever owned! . After spending way too much money on two wireless speakers too create a wireless 5. 1 system, had the sound bar go into a an endless loop and stop functioning. Tried every trick in the book including various online tutorials on how to hard reset and update the sound bar to no avail, truthfully a waste of money and because it's out of warranty and sony just doesn't care a horrible paper weight. (save your money for any other sound bar)

E. Guest, Thurrock says

Setup was okay, the settings screen is a bit inconvienant/not modern compared to some of the newer stuff out there. Aside from that, our playbar worked for 6 months and then took a crap just as most of the reviews said. My fault for not listening to everyone. It worked great and then all of the sudden stopped in the middle of watching a show and it wasn t even loud. Speaker isn t blown out, it s just an internal part failure. I ordered a sonos playbar instead! way worth the money. Sonos all the way.

I bought this sound bar from another major retailer (along with a couple of wireless sony speakers for surround sound). I would not recommend it to anyone. Once or twice each week it will simply stop working - no sound though it indicates it's hooked up and working properly. There's no rhyme or reason to why it stops working. Sometimes this can be cured by turning it on and off a few times, but at other times the only solution that will work will be to unplug both the soundbar and the sony xbr75x940d tv i have it hooked up too and let them sit a minute so that they do fresh restarts (i discovered this solution at sony's website when i was desperately trying to figure out some way to get the sound bar to work again). . Unfortunately, since i spent so much money on this and the two satellite speakers, i can't rationalize the expense for another sound system, at least for the foreseeable future. It'll be a heck of a long time before i ever buy a sound system from sony again (if ever).

S. Brendon, Wisconsin says

Read before you buy! my honest review of this sony htnt5 sound bar. I purchased this sound bar from best buy on december 22nd 2016. It has set in my spare bedroom in the original box and packaging until 4 days ago. I never even opened it until this week. I literally forgot about it being in there and never really even needed a sound bar because my tv's speakers sounded excellent. I purchased this sound bar because the salesman at best buy was bragging on it so much and took me over to a tv that supposedly had this sound bar hooked up to it, and that thing sounded awesome! he turned it up and the dialogue was crisp, clear and the bass from the subwoofer literally vibrated my chest, so i decided to get it based off that. And boy was i in for a surprise! the same day i bought the sony htnt5 sound bar i also purchased 2 sony bdp-s6500 blue ray dvd players. I hooked the blue ray player up to my bedroom tv and watched about 5 dvd's on it within a timespan of about 3 weeks, then the dvd player crapped out on me. It wouldn't play a dvd hardly and then when the piece of junk tried to play it would freeze up and make a weird clunking sound, so unhooked it and put it back in the box and put it in the spare bedroom closet thinking one day i would send it to sony and get a replacement since it was under warranty. So now fast forward to 4 days ago and the sound bar. I opened the box (for the first time) and removed the sound bar, then removed the subwoofer, then the hdmi cable and to my surprise that was all that was in the box, no remote and no instruction manual was in there. So i ordered the original sony htnt5 at a cost of $35. 00, and i downloaded the instruction manual for the sound bar online and once the remote came in i hooked everything up. The first thing the sound bar done was go through a software update once it was connected. Then i connected it to wifi and it was ready to go. Or so i thought. I had it hooked up to a 55" samsung 4k suhd curved tv that's only about 8 months old, and when i turned the volume up i couldn't hardly hear the subwoofer or the sound bar, i turned it to the max volume level of 50 and it was so low and muffled i couldn't make out a bunch of the words on the movie that was on tv. I went through every setting there was on my tv and the sound bar settings, i made sure it was on dolby, i made sure all the connections were correct and everything was like the instructions said, but the volume at max was still so low and muffled. The sound bar was sitting on top of my fireplace mantle below my tv and i picked it up to recheck again that all connections were done properly and i noticed the sound bar was really really warm on the bottom center, not burning hot but seemed to me that it was way too warm for a electronic device to be. So i called sony technical support number which is 239-768-7602. I spoke to the first rep and we went through the procedure to reset the unit back to original specs, and tried the volume again and it was exactly the same as before. So he said he needed to transfer me to the next tech department up for more in depth help. So once we got john on the phone. "and by the way, sony uses people in india for their technical service help line, so be prepared for the communication barrier issues to go along with the junk products sony pushes out" so back to my experience with "john" he would ask me a question then i would have to ask him to repeat the question because i had a hard time understanding his accent, he would say i'm going to check on something and the phone would be silent for about 10-15 minutes then he would spout off something that made no sense at all and place me on hold again, so about a hr and 15 minutes later, "john advised that my sound bar functioning correctly. This was my response. " so you are telling me that my sound bar is performing like it should when i'm standing 3-4 feet away from it, its at chest level and on max volume, and i can still hear you and understand words that you are saying while on the phone? " the answer he gave me was yes that is correct, the sound bar is functioning correctly! i was literally in shock! my factory tv speakers are twice as loud as this sound bar. I told him something was wrong with the sound bar and he would just say its normal and that the problem was my tv. So without even checking the sound bar out they was trying to pass the blame off on samsung, he said that i needed to get a sony tv in order to get the max sound from the sound bar. My response was "your nuts" i had a sony blu ray player that died in 3 weeks and a 800. 00 sound bar that i can't hear and that is probably going to catch on fire and burn my house down, but you want me to go buy a sony tv! lol! needless to say my conversation with "john" from india ended abruptly! here's the general breakdown of this situation, sony was king of the hill 15 or 20 years ago, their technology, their software, and their parts are inferior now, they push out junk like this and then use 3rd rate customer service reps in 3rd world countries to give you the run around and deter you from receiving a refund or a functioning replacement product. Ive read a lot of reviews on the web about other people having the same problem as me with this unit. I will never ever purchase a sony product again as long as i live, samsung and lg are by far way more advanced in technology than sony. I hope this novel i just wrote saves someone else from a costly mistake from purchasing this unit, or better yet any sony product. I got suckered once, but it won't happen again. Btw: when i asked "john about the sony blu ray player that crapped out on me after 3 weeks of use he said they couldn't do anything for me since it was a 2015 model. So i guess even though they was selling this new in december of 2016 their warranty isn't worth the paper it was written on, even though i have the receipt where i purchased it in dec of 2016. Shame on you sony!

Like everyone else who has had this unit, it will eventually apply an update and cause the device to be rendered useless. It will sit in the please wait status and not allow you to select an input. Unfortunately, you will have to send this back to sony for repairs. You will be without the unit for at least a month while waiting on repairs. The sound was great on the bar, but not worth the money when you have these kinds of problems.

So far am disappointed in the subwoofer quality it seems to try and hit frequencies that are to low for it i am guessing around 30hertz. When it attempted these long base notes it seems to sound like a flag flapping in the wind going to give it a few days to break in will update if there is any improvement. So far for $600 it's not worth it at all would look for higher quality for the price. Turn on the weekend the hills and listen to the lowest base note in the sequence to know what i am talking about.

L. Elanor, Bournemouth

I bought this on december 29, 2016. On march 18, 2017 it stopped working. The video display on the sound bar would only scroll "please wait" continuously. All remote buttons were unresponsive. The touch buttons on the front of the sound bar were unresponsive. I followed all the trouble shooting instructions and then reached out to sony. They then proceeded to walk me through the exact same steps all over again only to then finally agree with me, the unit has problems. I now have to mail this thing in for repairs. Estimated turn around time, 9 weeks!

Terrible product. Sound was ok but matrix meaning you dont get 5. 1. Just fake surround. Also has the worst software i ever seen. Slow as heck and got worse each day. Couldn't even get to settings after a few days

U. Janice, Wyoming

I bought this 12/2016. So far i had to send it in for repair twice due to, no connectivity to 5 ghz internet, overly long start up time, boot up freezes, not connecting to subwoofer, and sluggish performance. Now i'm re-experiencing the long boot up time 7 minutes to get sound to work. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this. Customer support is good, but the product is just bad. I have buyers remorse.

O. Perez, Havering says

Stops working after 6 months. Already had one repair done and stopped working again. You can see i am not the only one from the other reviews. Also purchased rear speakers so now i am out about 1, 500 dollars. Sony won t help.

P. Cortney, Texas

Broken twice in six months, same problem both times - ui slowed down to become completely unresponsive.
