Tivo Mini Ir/rf Remote – No Monthly Service Fees – Extends Your Tivo Dvr (tcda93000) 2911

Review for mini irrf remote no monthly service

Price was 149. If you have tivo you will love the tivo mini. I bought two from online store to go with my tivo bolt. Both allow full access to my tivo bolt from other tvs in my house. Anything you can do on the tivo bolt will be piggy-backed to this device. The tivo license on the bolt covers the tivo mini's so you do not have to pay an extra monthly/yearly/lifetime access fee. I have had mine for a year now and will be buying two more in the future. They work by borrowing one of the tv channels from your main tivo box. My tivo bolt has 4 channels so i can have a maximum of three minis and the bolt running at the same time, but i can have an unlimited number of tivo mini's - i just can't have them all on at the same time. Update - i have now had these minis for two years and counting - they still work great!

Preamble

I am a longtime tivo user. I think i have been using tivo's since around 2000 or 2001! they have always lasted for a long time and usually were only replaced when we wanted new features (more tuners). Last fall i had a power surge in my home and despite everything being plugged into surge protectors, it fried my tivo premeire which i immediately replaced with a bolt. A few weeks later my really old tivo dt started regularly freezing and restarting. We replaced that with the mini which is great! having the features of tivo on multiple tv's is wonderful. I did have trouble setting it up but tivo's support was able to help me with that in about 10 minutes. Basically the mini takes one tuner from the bolt and makes it available on the mini's tv. If someone is watching the bolt at the same time they only have 3 tuners instead of 4 available to them. Occasionally when no one is watching the mini, the bolt still only has 3 tuners and it says that one is in use by the mini. The only problem i could see with this is if you have multiple minis and had a lot of people trying to watch different shows at one time. But for a small family or couple it is the perfect solution to have tivo on multiple tv's without spending the money on multiple tivo's and service plans. I do wish i could use two tuners on the mini when they are not being used by the bolt. But i mostly watch recorded shows so that is not a big deal. I also love that it accesses and searches regular tv, netflix, online store prime, hulu and other streaming sites. This is a great product that is perfect for the house that already has tivo with multiple tuners! Tivo mini with ir/rf remote - no monthly service fees - extends your tivo dvr Review (tcda93000)

Being a tivo user for the last couple of years and starting out with the bolt, i have bought a total of 3 of these thus far to expand my abilities to watch in multiple rooms. Setup is very easy. If you have standard coaxial lines runs through your house already, you can use the moca protocol to connect the mini with the main receiver. I ended up ripping out all my coaxial and connect via ethernet cables. I feel it makes it easier to setup, and i don't have to have a filter installed on my coaxial coming into the house, to stop the signals from going back out the line. . Only problem i ever have is that after setup, it typically cant find my dvr the first time i turn it on. To fix this, you have to go to your main dvr unit, and force it to reconnect to tivo servers to check for updates. Once that process is complete, unplug the mini and plug it back in so it restarts completely, and then it usually connects right away. . Love the tivo mini though! -L. June

Tivo Mini Ir Rf Remote Home Theater

PROS
  • The biggest thing someone might not realize is that it uses up an existing recording slot on your main tivo. So if you can normally record 6 shows now you can only record 5. But remember to put the tivo mini in stand by when you aren't using it and you will be able to record 6 shows again when you aren't using the mini. . If you already have a tivo box (currently only 2 of the newest boxes support this) that can support this, this is amazing. Two ways you can plug the unit in to connect to your existing tivo box, via ethernet or tivo preferred method through cable line. There is maybe a 1 more second delay when loading menu screen or making changes, just enough to notice it but not be annoying. . Now as far as how it plays after it is setup, amazing. We have had zero delay. This works so well we are debating buying a couple more for other rooms in the house.
  • Works well; gives you the tivo experience anyplace you have a coax jack. You need a coax jack, though. Or hardwired ethernet. Kinda dumb, since wireless should work just fine. For some reason, tivo resists. I do get dropouts occasionally, where the tivo will lose connection to the home base tivo unit, via the moca network you setup over the cable lines. Wifi would be much more reliable. But tivo just resists this.
CONS
  • It works well, when it works. I constantly have to reboot it to connect to the tivo dvr downstairs, nearly every time i use it. Seems like a lot of money for something that has to be constantly reset.
  • After 3 hours on tivo customer service, i was not able to make a moca system and will be returning this mini.
  • Has networking issues constantly saying can't receive channel and you can see it in background. Tech support is horrible always wanting you to buy something new troubleshooting a fix. Nothing worked. Update online store allowed a return for a refund.

Tivo mini. This little unit is really great and does what it is advertised to do. . Tivo is at pains to say that this unit will not operate wirelessly and must use an ethernet or coax connection. While that is true, you can get around that. I bought a victony 500bps home plug powerline ethernet adapter to make the connection to my tivo roamio ota. The home plug uses your house electric wiring to make the connection which i still have trouble getting my mind around, but it does work. . If you can easily run an ethernet wire to your mini, that is the very best solution. There was no way for me to run a wire between units, so the home plug was the only solution for me. . Hints:. Make sure you hook one of the home plugs to the mini and one to your modem/router. I first hooked up one to my mini and one to my tivo roamio and spent a bunch of time trying to figure out why the system wouldn't work. Felt really dumb when it finally dawned on me that i had to hook up the the modem/router, not the main tivo. . When you first plug in the home plug, make sure you push the pair button on the unit attached to your modem/router first, then push the pair button on the unit attached to the mini. Then give the setup a few minutes to make the connection. . When you go to use the mini, make sure you turn on your main tivo unit first, otherwise the mini will get confused and screwed up. If the mini can't make connection, disconnect the ethernet wire from the mini box and wait 2-3 minutes and reconnect; that will probably fix the problem. If it doesn't, then disconnect both the power and ethernet cables and wait. . Set up really wasn't bad but did take a while, as it had to load an update. This is a great unit that does exactly what it is supposed to do. I'm happy i bought it, and i think you will be also. . Update: re the victony 500 mbps home plug unit: i had to return it; it worked, but the speed was just to slow for streaming and the pictures were jerky and bouncy. The 1000mbps or higher would be a better choice. Fortunately, i found a way to route an ethernet cable, so i don't need the home plug.

Click to see NoticeTivo Mini Ir/rf Remote - No Monthly Service Fees - Extends Your Tivo Dvr (tcda93000)"I bought this tivo mini as an alternative to buying another full tivo for a different room. I created a moca connection using my tivo bolt (and a poe filter) because there isn't ethernet in the room and it works very well most of the time. I can typically access the cable network guide and all channels as expected. . The four stars i've given are an indication of a couple downfalls: 1) every now and then the streaming apps (netflix, hulu, etc. ) disappear from the menu, which is typically resolved with a restart and 2) sometimes while watching a show, the connection will suddenly drop. . My biggest complaint-as with the tivo bolt-is that these devices aren't sold with a backlit remote control. Don't get me wrong, the style is nice and very comfortable to hold, but at the price they could at least have lit the buttons. :-/. . For the curious, moca instructions for tivo are here: ."

(0) Question: What comes in the box?

(1) Question: Does the mini allow you to watch shows already recorded on the main tivo. also if the mini is watching a recording are the 4 tuners still available to

(2) Question: Do you have to have a moca connection for this mini, or is the ethernet connection sufficient?

TiVo Roamio OTA 1 TB DVR - With No Monthly Service Fees - Digital Video Recorder Streaming Media Player

So far we have only had the product for a few weeks. We prefer this device compared to the channel master dvr, which we also have. It is a bit more complicated than channel master to set up and record shows (mil is older and was able to operate the channel master easily, but had difficulty with the tivo - wouldn't recommend to technologically challenged individuals :). . As far as pricing is concerned, if we had to pay $15 a month for a channel guide, i wouldn't do it - i would just go with the channel master. But for roughly the same price, you can get this dvr (which has more features) with a lifetime subscription. I do like the layout of the channel guide on the channel master better, but this guide gives you the date first aired, which is something missing from the channel master tv guide. One thing i love about this device that i absolutely detest on the channel master dvr is the remote control. The layout is much better and it feels much more comfortable to use. However, we actually do not use either of these remotes. We use a logitech harmony 650 for all our devices, including the roamio, but only because of how many devices we have in our entertainment center. Much prefer using one remote to 5 or 6 different ones. . We are on a slow internet service (3g wireless broadband) and the netflix, online store (with prime) and hulu plus all work very well with little to no buffering. This is one of the areas which this product shines. The channel master does have online content, but the buffering is horrendous, at least for us and it doesn't have netflix, hulu plus and online store built in. The online content it does have is built into the tv guide. . We will be upgrading the internal hard drive in this unit with a western digital wd30eurx after warranty expiration. We enjoy watching a lot of different shows and have already filled the hard drive. We have had to delete some series to save space, this shouldn't be an issue when we install the larger hard drive. . I would highly recommend downloading the roamio viewers guide from the tivo website. It gives detailed information on product. . As far as initial setup, yes it did take longer than it should have, as mentioned by other viewers. But we did not have an issue getting the channel guide or registering device. There was a quick setup card located in shipping box that came with device, following these directions made product registration very easy. However, i will state that this was a new registration and not an existing account. . One thing i don't quite get though is why this and other ota devices cannot do multi-room viewing without additional hardware. Our dish dvr was able to do this quite easily with just rg6 cables and additional remotes. . Overall, i would highly recommend getting this device with the product lifetime service (as far as i know, this option is only available through online store unless you are buying used). As usual, when ordering from online store (with prime), shipping was quick and product was well packaged.

Tivo Roamio Ota Dvr Streaming (r84600) FAQ.

I have really enjoyed the tivo roamio ota over the past month that i have owned it. It took a little getting use to but the menu has good instructions on it. The suggestions it comes up with was a cool addition that i didn't expect before making the purchase. In my opinion the guide that is provided is a make or break feature of this product. Without a good guide you don't end up recording the shows you want to watch. I have had multiple guide issues. Some channels showed tba and some channels were just wrong since those towers had recently changes what they broadcasted. I went to the tivo site and submitted a case to have several channels changed since the guide did not match what was being broadcasted. 2 weeks went by with no response so i decided to submit another case. Another week or so went by with no response so i figured i would submit another case. Finally i get a response saying all of the cases (except the first one) were closed. I go back to the site and question why these were closed without fixing the lineup issue and no communication back to me. The response they gave me was they were closed because they were duplicates. After a month of trying to get my lineup fixed in the guide i still have issues with it. . To recap: i like the device but i am not pleased with the support this company provides when it comes to keeping their guide accurate. -Notice from O. Annette, Georgia

I am very pleased with my new tivo roamio ota. My first attempt to cut the cord was with a different brand which i couldn't use. After getting the tivo, i realized, by comparison, how much better the tivo is. The commercial skip feature couldn't be any easier to use. Being able to control power, volume and mute with the same remote simplifies things, also. I am still adapting to the remote. It is very efficient, but also a bit complicated. Programming tivo to record tv series is also a plus and i guess all the options for different activities are necessary. More time should make me comfortable with all the many options available with tivo.

- F. GladysI am sooo happy with my tivo roamio ota dvr with no monthly subscription! i was using windows media center pc as a work-around for years to record ota shows for my wife and i so we could watch our shows uninterrupted after our kids went to bed. It worked fine. But only one tuner limited our options and we had to always leave our desktop pc on. With microsoft forcing us to upgrade from windows 7 media center to windows 10 (no media center) tivo capitalized on this demographic (myself included) by providing a lifetime subscription option finally! . . Saw earlier reviews with difficulty doing the activation- online activation was a breeze probably 5 minutes to get everything linked up and squared away. I will admit for the actual tivo to find channels, find wifi, do hardware updates, etc out of the box took quite a while- probably 60-90 minutes from initial plug in to being able to use it. Not difficult, just took longer than i anticipated. Once set-up this thing is absolutely incredible! create a one-pass for your show one time- and tivo automatically records all your shows from that point forward! no more messing around! 4 tuners means no more deciding between recordings! . . The iphone app is super slick- being able to add one-pass recordings and manage your recordings remotely is very convenient. We don't use the remote viewer feature (approx $130 to activate) but for people on the go i would see this to be a very nice perk! . . A little expensive at $399 - but for what you are getting it really is the best of the best. I researched competitors that were priced in the $250-$300 range- but the interface, guide, automatically scheduled recordings, commercial skipping, etc just made this the clear choice. . My only maybe complaint- i went on tivo's website and printed out the "cheat sheet" on what all the remote buttons were for! there are a ridiculous number of buttons on the remote that seem excessive. We have a roku our young kids use (with ease) but the tivo remote can be overwhelming even for adults. We have not even attempted to have our kids use the tivo when the roku remote/interface is so simple. This is probably my only gripe, and will be a major reason for keeping the roku to accompany our tivo. . You definitely get what you pay for! if you are a cable cutter or if you primarily watch over the air television- this tivo dvr is a clear winner for watching all your shows on your time. For us it is after the kids go to bed and when we want. Not when the broadcast networks say without paying $100/month for a cable dvr. . Keep it up tivo! you hooked another customer for the long term.

I've had this dvr for a week now and i'm very happy with it. I had grown tired of paying a monthly fee when i mainly watch local tv programs. But, i enjoyed being able to skip commercials and being able to pause the program. I also enjoyed the program listings. This tivo roamio ota provides all of this and more. No more monthly fee ! i didn't understand the tivo mini system, which apparently requires two bridge units to run the system over coax cable, so i purchased a second tivo roamio ota dvr for my bedroom. The price of the second dvr was not a lot more than a mini and two bridge units. The tivo system works a little different than my old provider, but it has been fun figuring everything out. If you are thinking of cutting the cord, and you would be happy with your local channels, this tivo is excellent for that. The tivo also has all the popular "apps" and turns your tv into a 'smart" tv. I'll be saving about $70 a month, so in one year i'll be even on the price of the two tivo dvrs.

TiVo BOLT 500 GB DVR: Digital Video Recorder Streaming Media Player - 4K UHD Compatible - Works Digital Cable HD Antenna

Have owned dvr's for over 20 years now from charter, dish, direct tv, and even older tivos. Tivo is by far the best. Now has pretty seamless searching between cable and streaming services like online store prime, netflix and youtube. Advertisement skipping feature is wonderful, but only works on some shows. . Downside is monthly cost, but to me it's worth not having to watch commercials and mindless tv.

Tivo bolt, the unified entertainment system. It looks unconventional because there s nothing conventional about it. Tivo Bolt 500 Dvr Compatible (r84950) FAQ.

Love the product and idea, just a couple of nitpick things, . . *keyboard support i haven't been able to get to work. *no hbo now or a couple of other apps i'd like to see. . Other than the above, it is so much better than a regular dvr from the cable companies. On a side note, the box mine came in seemed to have been opened, and i think that i may have a refurbished machine as the tivo itself was "open". But this is on quality of ship, not the product. -Notice from H. Anonymous, Nottingham

I do like this product. I don't love it. It does save money from renting a dvr but it's alot of work alot of wires. I do like alot of the features like commercial skip, watching my online store movies and being able to record more than 2 shows with lots of storage space. This all comes with a one year commitment and not much help figuring things out. That's why i gave 4 and not 5 stars.

- X. NewellFirst of all i have to start with, we love our bolt. Installing it on cable was a bit of a challenge but my advice is be prepared to have a lot of patience, no part of the installation goes quickly. However, very little of the installation is rocket science. Once i got it up and running my wife programmed almost 60 programs that we enjoy watching and that was reasonably easy but time consuming. We found out that you really need to fully understand the record options before you start programming or you'll be tweeking them for days afterwards. Now the bolt is knock down powerful and it makes watching recorded shows awesome. Honestly, the skip feature is absolutely my favorite feature. Sound and picture are perfect and the remote is the best i have ever used. I have recommended the bolt to all of my friends and family.

I am very pleased to be a user of the bolt 500 gb. I also have a mini in another room, giving me whole home dvr. Having been a dir tv user . This is very similar with a few improvements. (skip commercials, quick mode) there are a couple of features that are missing; i. E. Easy access to my favorites & having to click on the show in my list to see the recorded time. The one thing that i "should" have done differently was to purchase the 1 tb unit. (it fills up fast) nevertheless, a great buy!

TiVo Bridge MoCa 2.0 Adapter

I had my doubts if this would work, but worked just as advertised. Turned my coax wiring into ethernet carriers. Used this to connect my tivo mini's to my tivo roamio. Worked great.

Have a tivo dvr? want to expand to a screaming-fast, multi-room setup? simply connect it to the tivo bridge using your home s existing wires and create a lightning-fast network. Your tivo devices will receive cable tv signals and connect to your home network, so you can access recorded shows and streaming content through your existing coax cable. Be sure to get a tivo bridge adapter if your dvr cannot use an ethernet cable to connect to your home network.

Tivo Bridge Moca 2.0 Adapter (ecb6000tivo) FAQ.

Newly set up moca system this worked wonderfully. -Notice from J. Rochelle, Sefton

I'm giving the tivo moca system 5 stars, because it works beautifully with my tivo mini. . But i'm not using the bridge - i sent it back after i finally figured out i that my new bolt+ already has moca - so this is superfluous, at least in my setup (tivo bolt+ downstairs; tivo mini upstairs in the bedroom). . I'm not a complete knucklehead, but i admit i didn't study the bolt+ directions since the thing set itself up in seconds. I was misled in part by the advertising for this unit above - it says "tivo bridge is compatible with tivo bolt/bolt+" . . . . So after i bought the mini and it said i needed moca, i found this and bought it. After spending a day and a half trying to get moca to work i finally figured out it was actually the bridge that was fouling things up. . I do appreciate that online store let me return it though. And i'm really happy to be sending that time warner box back and reducing my bill!

Tivo-bridge-moca-2.0-adapter-(ecb6000tivo) set picture

- . JaniceThese worked perfectly. I've been using moca adapters for years, and these are the nicest ones i've used. In my setup it was totally plug and play. I had a situation where a customer had a poorly-wired house and they didn't want to time/expense/mess of running a new line through the drywall, but they needed a connection for two voip phones. Well, a couple of these did the trick. . So let it be known that these have plenty of use outside of tivo.

Strongly suggest this if you do not have wired internet in every room. The speed is consistent and does not lose network connection. The instructions for creating the moca network on the tivo site are not the best but i have some network experience and it all worked out. If you will be using apps on the tivo box like netflix you may need to open a port on your router. As soon as it was connected i received a port 37 error and had to log in to my router to open that port. . I added a photo of the power adapter since i have seen that question asked.

The F.A.Q. for tivo mini with ir/rf remote - no monthly service fees - extends your tivo dvr

When we decided to cut the cord, we also decided to get a tivo, because honestly, what i was mostly paying for was the dvr service. I don't like commercials, especially as the election season draws to a close. $15/month is a lot cheaper than $70 or $80/month. We got a tivo ota, but this was only limited to one room in the house. We wanted a few more options - watching tv snuggling in bed, or downstairs in the media room. After doing some research, we decided this was a great option. . The tivo mini connects via either a local network (ethernet - wired only) or a moca (media over coax) connection, so it doesn't allow you, to say, stream on your phone or while you're traveling. It effectively mimics the multi-room system of a traditional cable or satellite install. I believe (but don't quote me on this) that the minis have no local storage - they are simply a way of processing the signal from the "main" tivo box. Note that the mini does not have any additional monthly subscription fees - that's part of the main tivo box, without which the mini would not work. . The requirement of ethernet only is a bit outdated and frustrating, but in our case, we were fortunate the house had a good moca setup for the rooms we needed it in. In the future we're going to try a setup in the other end of the house, which my husband believes is on a different and separate moca network, in which case it would not work.

A number of questions have been asked here.

I like it now that's it's working, but getting there was a bit of a hassle. I had read online store reviews that indicated it was necessary to wait longer than the 15 minutes mentioned in the instructions after doing an online activation. I waited three hours before trying to set things up. Everything went smoothly until the final step. That's when i got the v70 error message which supposedly meant that i didn't have a tivo that was compatible with the mini. I knew this was wrong because i had already set up another mini. I tried unplugging and plugging the mini, but got the same error message. . I called tivo customer support and was put through to tony in the philippines. Tony said the activation for minis not purchased directly from tivo can take 24 hours. But he said he could try to help me work around that wait. He had me unplug both the mini and my tivo roamio. Then i powered by up the roamio and went to setting, then network and then clicked on connect to tivo service now. That started a 5 minute setup process. Then i powered up the mini and went through the setup process again. After about ten minutes, the mini worked. Lots of wait time during which i was able to talk to tony about life in the philippines. . I had some other hassles when setting up my first mini. But it was already activated because i bought it directly from tivo

Best tivo mini ir/rf remote - no monthly service fees - extends your tivo dvr (tcda93000) in review

Purchased a tivo bolt a few months ago and love it! read about the mini but was concerned about the moca network requirement so held off. Continued to use our old tivo series 3 as a standalone unit until it needed to be replaced. Purchased the mini with a poe filter to protect network traffic from leaving the house. Attached the poe filter between the external cable and an existing splitter based on the simple diagram. The setup for the mini was very easy. The device connected to the bolt via the moca network and processed the guided setup quickly. Everything looked good until the last step. The mini unit was unable to validate the guide data. Retried multiple times but it seemed like this was going to require a call to customer service (during normal business hours). Then i noticed our home network was not able to connect to the internet anymore. Turns out the poe filter was blocking traffic from the cable router too! had to add a secondary splitter to make sure the router had a direct feed from verizon while the two tv cables were protected by the poe filter. Once the cables were separated the mini was able to complete the guided setup. Having a secondary tivo unit with access to the same recorded programs is fantastic. The connection through the moca network is fast. I didn't notice a delay when accessing stored programs. Changing live tv channels does have a delay. If you use the tivo guide to find programs versus channel surfing then this should not be an issue.

This is part of my "cut the cord" solution. I bought the lifetime service tivo roamio ota unit as the main unit in the living room. It records over the air local channels just great from an antenna. I stream what it records as well as live ota broadcasts to the tivo minis i have in my bedrooms and office. I pair this with the latest versions of the online store firetv unit. On which i subscribed for $35/mo to playstation vue to get all my "cable channels" (it also had built in dvr functionality on these channels too) i like and could have missed from att uverse. (cnn, msnbc, fox news, espn1-3, fx. Tbs, tcm, etc). I already had netflix and of course online store prime. . These two units on each tv make it easy to cut the cord. The tivo mini is great. . These do have to be on a wired connection, but that's not a big deal. I bought some of the ethernet over ac units from linksys. I plugged those int to connect from my main internet router/swtich out to the tv. I put one of the cheap but very usable tp-link switches on each end of the ac ethernet units and plug in my firetv and tiros. Voila!

My wife and i switched from a directivo s2 to a bolt+mini setup on comcast for a few weeks now and aren't looking back. Much as i am not a comcast fan, at&t buying directv spurred us to switch (and save $100 in the process). . The interface, as with all tivo products, is nearly flawless and its integration with the bolt is commendable. . But. Goodness help you if you have any blips in your network at all. It doesn't really need that much bandwidth (a 100mb/s line is plenty), but wireless and powerline ethernet (no matter how high-end) will blip out from time to time with latency issues. From what i can tell, if you have any packet latency 25ms or so at all you get stutters and the dread "your network is too slow" error. Tivo really wants you to have solid cat6 or moca between your boxes and absolutely does not buffer video from the bolt from what i can tell. . If you have (fairly decent rg6) coax or cat6 gigabit ethernet (or if you're only using e. G. Netflix/online store or sd video streams), you're fine. Hd from cablecard and any other network topology is asking for trouble. For now, we've strung a cat6 cable across the house (until i can get in the attic and run something permanent). Do not count on wireless or powerline ethernet. Really. . I can understand with live tv and changing channels; streaming from a hdd should be buffering really. 5 stars if it were.

Other reviewers have covered the fact that this is a great, convenient device. All i will add is that when purchased from online store, it needs to be activated by tivo upon receipt. (devices i purchased directly from tivo were already activated when i received them. ) activation is easy, it just requires telling tivo the service number of your device (online or by phone). The instructions with the mini say to wait 15 minutes after activation to install the device, but when my mini "did not find" the compatible dvr, i called tivo and was told that activation usually takes at least two, but up to 24 hours. The setup is simple, but painfully slow if you don't like waiting.

Does exactly what it claims to and performance is quite good (i'm using a 1gbps ethernet switch). I have two of these connected to a tivo bolt and it works great. The only thing that is annoying is that. . 1. You have to remember that the tivo dvr will always keep a lock on one of it's tuners for live tv. So if you have a bolt with 4 tuners you only have 3 tuners available for recording or watching live tv via a tivo mini. So if you're watching live tv on one mini and recording 2 shows you won't have enough available tuners for the 2nd mini. . 2. The mini doesn't always release the tuner automatically. Even if you turn off the tv with the tivo remote, it won't auto-release the tuner. Tivo support says it should release after 90 minutes, but i've found that's not true even after 3+ hours. If you have multiple tivo mini's like i do this can be annoying. The work around is to always remember to exit live tv before turning off the tv. . 3. There doesn't seem to be a way to remotely "kick" a tivo mini off from using a tuner from the tivo dvr or another mini. So if you run out of tuners, you have to walk over to the other room to release it.

I bought this to replace a failing cable box that the company insisted had no issues. Their box did not do hd, but i could get an upgrade for a few more dollars a month, no thanks! i returned all my cable equipment and now have a much better system with tivo. It is user friendly and has better features and graphics, making the tv experience better than standard cable. The only thing i have from the cable company is a cable card to control the main box. But with the tivo setup i have all features at all tv's through out the house.

I have a tivo bolt as my main dvr and the tivo mini's screen looks like a carbon copy of the same screen i see on the bolt, so it's pretty intuitive to navigate the menus. I've tried both watching a recorded show and watching live tv and it seems to work flawlessly. I like that when you move from the bolt to the mini or vice-versa, it remembers where you last were at in the show. . The installation was fairly easy, but had a few bumps in the road. I followed their quickstart instructions:. 1) activated the product online with tivo. 2) tivo bolt dvr was already online with ethernet, so skipped this step. 3) connected mini to local network with ethernet cable and applied power, connected hdmi to tv. 4) completed mini setup screen. . It took at least 12 hours for the mini to show up on tivo's website as fully activated. Before and after the full activation was completed i would see an error message (code v70) that it couldn't find the bolt dvr. Pressing the tivo central button would only repeat the error screen, so i had to pull the power cord to reboot the mini to get out of that screen and it put me back on the setup screen. After repeating the setup screen, it automatically found the bolt and became fully operational. . I only own one tivo mini, but i did notice that their online detailed installation instructions had some additional information about "releasing" the tuner: "once you access the host dvr's tuner from tivo mini, that tuner is not available for other network devices. When you are done using the mini and want to release the host tuner to other network devices (e. G. , another tivo mini, tivo stream), press the tivo button to return to tivo central, then press the tivo button a second time to release the tuner. Unless you actively release the tuner, it remains available to tivo mini for an hour and a half. If the tuner is not accessed during this time, it is automatically released. ". . In the end, i only am paying comcast for a $3/month to lease their cable card for the tivo bolt and enjoying tivo functionality in two rooms, so i'm very satisfied with this multi-room solution. I can return the comcast hd-dta100u and save further monthly charges i had for the second tv.

This is my third tivo mini and it has changed the way we watch tv in the home. I'm an early adopter of tivo. I got my first series 2 box back in 2001 and won't use anything else. The new tivo mini solved the problem we have with our other ones in that it uses rf remotes instead of ir: a needed tech since our family room tivo mini lives in a cabinet in our built-ins. The other two are on top of a dresser in bedrooms so it's less of an issue, but we really needed this version. It's worked flawlessly and paired with our roamio in the media room without a hitch.

Here "was" my problems. Had 4 dvr box renting from comcast costing $80 per month. Got tivo romio plus (6 shows) and bought 3 mini's. . 1. Before i've made our investment, i called tivo 3 times and they were able to provide suggestions and answered our concerns. 2. Main reason i got tivo romio plus (6 channel) mainly due to my usages (my folks can be recording 2-3 shows and kids can be recording/watching same time). Again, i have 4 tv's. I originally got roamio but end up returning it and got roamio plus. 3. Setup was soooo easy (all done by network cable). Took less than 10 mins. 4. Not sure if this applies to others. One of our tv is mounted on the wall but all wires are hidden and dvr box was behind the wall. Had ir cable (see photo) running but mini version has rf frequency which means it can go through the walls! how cool is that! (very important to me). 5. Small lag between channel but not noticeable. It's lots of money for roamio plus+ 3 boxes $850 but i personally thought it was well investment for us. . For those that are like myself who is looking for save $ for long term and getting ride of comcast boxes, i honestly never thought tivo was going to work for us (i honestly thought tivo was dead but wow! ) but i am really impressed and even my wife loves it. My only dilemma is whether to fork out another $500 for lifetime service. It's working for us so i would hope it works out for others!

I was old school tivo, rocking a series 1 with like 7 hours of disk space (more if you degraded the picture quality to vhs tape that you unraveled, rubbed all over the dog, and then spooled back into it's case). Then i switched to u-verse and couldn't use my own dvr. Now u-verse was okay. I believe they probably have one of the better provider set-top boxes. But, it never compared to a tivo - so when we decided to switch to comcast, it was a foregone conclusion that we'd spring for a cable card rather than a comcast dvr. . The tivo mini solved the problem we had with our directv tivos, in that one device could do all the recording while the other streamed content. The thing is, and this is important - tivo really wants you to use moca. Like really really really wants you to use it. I thought maybe it was just a preference, so i hooked my mini up to an airport express and made it wireless. Afterall, i'd been using a wireless receiver from at&t for a couple of years. . Big mistake. Oh it acted like it worked. And it would work, for a little while. Then came the slow network errors bringing everything to a halt. I tried lowering the resolution to 720p, no difference. I tinkered with network settings, no difference. Unfortunately the easy answer (moca) doesn't work for me. Between directv, u-verse, and now comcast - my coax network sucks. I'm not even sure if the outlets work anymore. For the last 5 years outside traffic has come from the nid, around my house, and through the outside wall - bypassing my inside wiring. . I did manage to solve my issue with two powerline adapters and a switch. I hooked the switch up to my comcast router and my tivo roamio. Then i wired that to a powerline adapter and paired that with another powerline upstairs. The mini plugs into the adapter and boom everything works. . So yeah, if you have a working coax network use moca. If you don't, then consider a powerline adapter. In my use, it provides enough bandwidth to stream traffic to the mini.

This device is a great addition to a 4- or 6-channel tivo, and installs with a minimum of frustration. One important detail: a lot of folks have parroted the statement in tivo literature that the unit will not work with wifi, and some have even pulled ethernet cable to their secondary viewing location. The warning only means the unit has no wifi capability of its own, nor will it work with a tivo wifi adapter; it does not mean you can't set the unit up using a wifi range extender that offers adequate bandwidth (i. E. N300 as a minimum), most of which have an ethernet jack. During setup, and after you've added the mini's id to your tivo account and waited 15 - 30 minutes, it is important to have your tivo connect to the internet to download an update, or during setup the mini will warn that it can't find a tivo to connect to. When setup is complete and the unit is communicating with your tivo, the resulting performance is virtually identical to that of your central tivo location. I installed the unit using an ac1300 bandwidth dual channel wifi repeater: the response to remote instructions is without any perceptible delay and image quality is excellent.

Nice product. Small, feature packed and well thought out. Faster and easier to set up than the base unit (roamio ata) it still took about an hour to get the upgrades, downloads and authorization before it would work. I chose to activate over the internet and setting up the account was a bit confusing. It wanted me to set up an account and when i tried it said my e-mail was already being used and wouldn't let me. Ended up i had to call support to correct the problem. . The purpose of the mini is to extend all the features of the base unit to any other room in the house. Multiple minis can be used with one base station. . Update 03-18-2016: the powerline adapters work great. No more dropouts and the tivo isn't competing for bandwidth. . How it works. The tivo mini works by streaming video from the base unit through your network. This requires a wired connection as video eats up a lot of bandwidth and most wifi routers aren't fast enough. I don't have ethernet in my living room where the base unit is so i use a wifi ac to connect which is barely good enough if no one else is using the wifi at the time. If someone is on the network it degrades the bandwidth just enough to prevent hidef from streaming smoothly. I am going to try a powerline adapter to ethernet and see if it is fast enough and not interfere with wifi. There are other options moca which is recommended but the roamio requires an expensive adapter to make that work. Any gigabit network is fast enough. I find it odd and disappointing that the recommended method is also the option missing from the roamio ota. . Conclusion: great product and works well to bring the experience of cable or satellite to ota programing. Easy to install and you do not have to buy a second subscription to you account so the programming is free with the mini as it extends the signal to each room a mini is installed. By far the best and smoothest transition from cable/satellite to ota there is.

Love the tivo mini! i've only had it for 1 day so i'll return to this post if anything changes but so far it's great. Easy set up, seamless integration, works perfectly. The mini requires a working tivo roamio (works with some other models also) and it took a few minutes to "pair" it with our family room roamio at the other end of the house. We've had no issues with lag watching online store and netflix on our bedroom tv and using it to watch live or pre-recorded tv is exactly the same as if we were in the family room. I haven't noticed any pixelating, delays, or reduction in either sound or video quality. . I have to admit that i am a bit surprised at how well the mini works. I shouldn't have been surprised because we've always loved our tivo products primarily because they just work. No muss, no fuss, no bells and whistles, just fantastic functionality right out of the box. No irritating dialog boxes telling you you can't watch tv right now because of an extremely urgent software update, no "forgetting" to record important shows (a hallmark of a dvr whose name rhymes with "sex one"), just easy intuitive usefulness and convenience. . One of the best features of the tivo mini is that you don't have to pay additional tivo service fees. When you buy a tivo bolt or roamio, you'll have to pay tivo service fees which are currently around $150 per year but those fees cover the addition of a mini. You get all the tivo functionality that i'm addicted to without adding to the bottom line. . The only potential drawback i see with the tivo mini is that you can't use the tivo app to control it. We only use the app to remotely set up recordings and to download pre-recorded material and since the mini does neither of these things, i'm pretty sure that it doesn't matter. I also haven't had a chance yet to test how well it works with someone watching both fr and br tvs at once - i'll modify this post if i discover any problems with that. . If you have a compatible tivo already, the tivo mini is by far the best way to add tivo services to additional tv's in your house.

So much better than my cable companies box. Tivo's menus are aweome, so easy to navigate as well as the remote rocks; easy to use, very responsive. You just have to try to get the user experience. . I paired this mini to my main tivo box; it was a bit challenging to setup but once you get it setup, no more monthly setup box charges and the connection is solid, never had delays, and i can watch tivo recordings in bed from my tivo app on my ipad. Too much good stuff and after 1 year will save $300 per year. Don't know why tivo doesn't advertise more or why apple doesn't buy tivo.

This little thing works great, the perfect companion for a bolt or a roamio. It sits on our bedroom tv and works as an extension of the big tivo roamio pro in our living room. . The only setup problem i had, was that i didn't realize i had to activate it with tivo before it would work, even though there is no service plan required for the mini any more and it's just an extension of your existing tivo. Until you activate it, (and wait up to a day for tivo to process the activation), you will just get unhelpful error messages. Of course the manual does tell you this (i did open the manual eventually. Doh! ). . Once up and running, you have the familiar tivo interface and everything works as expected. Unlike a full tivo this thing is tiny, silent, and has fewer bright flashing leds on the panel, so is much more bedroom-friendly. It's less confusing that maintaining two full tivos, as you only have one set of onepasses and one set of my shows to deal with. Connection over your existing cable wiring to to your roamio or bolt works great, using a technology called "moca" which requires no adaptors (except for older tivo models). In my old house i had no moca problems, but in my new one i had to install a cheap poe (point of entry) filter on the main cable feed to the house, to block out interference from neighbouring moca networks. My friend has several minis in his house and connects all of his with ethernet, which also works great. . If you have a roamio or bolt, the one-button commercial break skip works on the mini perfectly. You can also make the mini's 30 second skip-ahead happen instantly with the familiar tivo code of select-play-select-30-select. Playing videos from your main tivo works perfectly. Once in a while, the buggy online store video app will get very slow and stop working, but this is easily fixed by rebooting the mini. Netflix works fine. The only program source i've had trouble with is xfinity on demand, which is flaky even on my main tivo. . Overall i've been very happy with the tivo mini. Its a much better bedroom-tivo than a full-sized tivo is, and it's less work than managing two separate tivo's in a house. There's also no monthly fee for the mini.

I dropped my satellite provider after i realized that 95% of what i was watching and recording came from my local stations. I had been running with the tivo roamio ota 1 tb dvr for about three months just to make sure i had no regrets before i purchased the mini. Couldn t be happier. As a matter of fact, i am so happy with my decision to cut bait that i bought a second tivo roamio ota. The cool thing about the mini is it can see the programming on both roamios.

I've been a tivo user for fifteen years, but up until last week had never paid much attention to the mini. I always thought it would be slow and jittery since it relies so much on the network to do everything. But my premier xl died after seven years and i needed to replace it with something. I don't like paying monthly or annual service fees and the current price for lifetime service of $550 is ridiculous. So buying a full fledged tivo was out of the question. . I decided to give the mini a try. I have a moca enabled network, so plugging in a single coax cable gives me both my tv signal and internet connectivity. Technically, even the tv signal is essentially just network data since i'm just transmitting the picture from my tv roamio over the network. But the fact that a single coax cable, plus a power cable and hdmi cable to the tv was all that i needed to hook this up made the installation very simple. No cat 5 connection needed on this one. . I did initially forget to register my device on tivo. Com, so i wasted a few minutes troubleshooting until i figured that out. And then even after registering, i had to reconnect my roamio to the tivo service twice to get it all to work. So the installation process was not completely smooth, but no big deal since i've been using tivo for so long. I could imagine that new users who don't like to fiddle with these things could get a bit frustrated with this stuff though. . In any case, once up and running i ran it through a series of tests, and i was amazed to find that the performance of my mini was even better than the tivo premier it replaced. No network lag at all, and very zippy menus. Netflix loads much faster on the mini than the premier as well. . Best of all, i was able to return my cable card and cut $5. 00 off my monthly cable bill. For $150, this device lets you have a fully functional tivo enabled television anywhere in your house without any tivo service fees or cable equipment fees. That's an incredible price for so much functionality. I'm probably going to get another one when my other premier dies and just have one fully functioning tivo driving minis to all of the remote tvs. This also works great with tivo stream, which allows me to watch my tv shows on my ipad or iphone. . If it weren't for the slightly complex setup procedures to get tivos working, i think tivo would have sold many more millions of these devices. They are hands down a fantastic deal compared to the $25/month frontier wants for a very basic dvr that can't do half of what tivo can do.

I purchased this as an addon for a tivo bolt that we use for our cable service. We were able to replace our cable tv remote boxes with these, and stop paying the cable company rental. They work great, full quality tv signal. . I ran them first as moca (media-over-coax) remotes to our bolt, and it was fine as long as we didn't have a power failure. Even a power blip though, and we seemed to lose the connection between our bolt and these boxes, requiring power cycling again. We finally moved to ethernet connection, and it's been very stable since then. . Would have been a 5 star review, except you can't run these as wifi remotes for viewing, (you actually can, if you have an 802. 11ac router you are willing to run as a remote node for your mini, but that's outside the normal scope of things! ).

I decided to leave direct tv after realizing that 9 of the 10 shows that i follow are over the air. I bought the tivo roamio and the 2 qty minis. If you are only buying the ota roamio then setup is very easy. It has a built in wireless connection if you have a wifi router at home but it also has jack to hardwire the network connection. Hardwire is always preferred for data rates but wifi is convenient and for the most part does what you need it to do. I use the wifi and streams hd without issue. The initial cost for my setup was a little steep. About $500 for the whole setup: tivo minis/roamio, hd attenna, and power line adapters but our cable bill every month was over $150. So we figure after four-five months all the system would have paid for itself and then we will only have to pay the $15 a month fee to tivo, $10 netflix, and $12 hulu, $37 total for a whole lot of tv. That s still saving us over a $100 a month and we don t have to worry about contracts or crazy rate hikes. . I love these tivo boxes so far but there is a learning curve to get a configuration like mine good to go, roamio plus two minis. I ll try to go over some of the details in hopes that it will help someone else that has question regarding their configuration. . First the hd antenna. I bought an online store indoor antenna that has a 50 mile radius. It works great. The model i bought was amplified hdtv antenna - 50 miles range, 1byone and placed it in a window on my second story. Did i say this thing works great because its pretty awesome for the price. Then i plugged the antenna cable (coax) into the cable (coax) jack of my house so the signal was reachable in any room that had a cable (coax) plug. You lose a little bit of signal strength by doing this but not enough to lose a channel from what i saw. I did this because this signal needs to plug into your roamio to get the ota (over the air) channels. By having each plug in the house available for connection it allowed me flexibility in deciding which room to place the roamio in. . Now where do we place the roamio? if you have the ability to hardwire do it if not go wifi make sure you can place the roamio in a room closer to your router than further so you have good signal strength. Reason being is streaming hd video requires a good signal or you ll get a lot of buffering if the signal is weak. If your router has the ability to use different channels go with the 5ghz. Theirs less interference in this band but once again signal strength is key. Yes the roamio does support this band but it may not on the older versions. My current version does. Anyways back to the signal anything over 50% located in the settings part of your tivo box under network will work. Lower than that it becomes kind of sketchy for the hd streaming from apps like hulu or netflix. . The minis require a hardwire connection to the network. You can do the moca suggested version, uses coax for the network connection, but i went with the network over powerline config and it works well. My reason for not going over the coax is because i want those lines to be as clean as possible for my ota (over the air) channels i was collecting from my hd antenna. The model i used for networking over the power lines is netgear powerline 1200. . Note: streaming hd from the roamio over wifi to your router and then from the router over hardline to the minis does perfectly fine despite what the tivo rep said in chat. . In short:. . 1. Activate your account first on the tivo website and register the devices first. This sometimes takes awhile for them to process so do it right when you get the equipment. . 2. Connect your hd antenna. (try different places in the house for the best signal). . 3. Setup the roamio, hardwire if possible, and validate your channels and apps are working. . 4. Install the inline power modules. . 5. Connect your minis to the inline power modules. When you do this give it a few minutes to connect to your roamio. I was trying to fix a connection issue that wasn t an issue because i wasn t giving it time to sync even when the mini s said it couldn t find the roamio. All i had to do was wait and like magic they were talking. . Hope this helps someone.

Wow. What a great product. I have 5 tvs connected to my verizon fios server. The net result was i was renting 5 cable boxes/dvr from verizon for a whopping $62/month. I've replaced all the verizon boxes with tivo bolt and 4 tivo mini's. The cost with subscription to tivo and considering the $5/month cost for the rental of the verizon cable card which goes into the bolt will be totally paid for in less than 16 months. Saving $62/month is huge. The tivo experience is spectacular. I would be cord cutter if i was in an area that could receive abc ota signal without a massive antenna on the roof. And the tivo product pretty much gets you there. Between the "one pass" recordings of our favorite shows, often with commercial skip, and the integration of netflix, vudu, hulu (we don't use but you could) and online store prime we have a streamlined entertainment experience. Not having to switch inputs on the tv to go from cable box to a dvd or streaming box is huge too. Each tv in the house has the same exact method for viewing. And that has made everyone very happy, by not having to figure out inputs, power, where everything is, etc. Each box is a plex client as well. Plex lets you load all your existing dvds, photos and home movies onto your computer (plex media server) and you have access to that content as well, all from the same interface, same remote, no changing of tv inputs at all. . One pass is very cool. It let's you start a series recording, using many options such as streaming or ota only or both, by season even, new and repeats, etc. So if you want to pickup watching an old tv series that everyone is talking about, setup a one pass and start watching. The repeats can be recorded onto the tv when they come up, and you also get access to the list of shows that are available to stream immediately. It really is very cool. . I have 2 small gripes. When you setup your netflix, online store, vudu, etc on one device, there is seemingly no way to copy that data to the rest of the devices. So i have 5 tivo devices. I use netflix, online store, vudu, plex, and the recently added hbogo services. That's entering in my credentials 25 times. But at least you have the option of downloading the remote app and entering the credentials on your smart phone or tablet. That makes it easier. And lastly, tivo needs to come up with a dvr expander (and external hard drive) to expand the capability of the recording. 1tb in the bolt is great, but with all the easy ways to get programming it can get full quickly. The currently supported dvr expanders are not being produced any longer. . All in all, i really can't understand why tivo isn't more popular today. Look at your cable bill and your hardware rental fees. Stop the madness. Now it looks as though the courts have allowed an opening for 3rd parties like tivo, roku, and apple tv to be your cable box. But i suspect any integration will be years away. Tivo can do it now with a cable card. Great, great, great devices and service.

I had the first two generations of tivo and then went back to regular dvr through the cable company for some reason i cannot remember. I got by for nearly a decade. Then, after recently moving, which required a switch to charter (aka spectrum), i was sooo disappointed with the quality of the charter spectrum dvr that i was going nuts-it was like going back in time a decade to an unintuitive interface with ancient graphic display. I took it back and decided to try tivo again. I bought the bolt with a mini for my second tv. Why, why, why did i deprive myself of one of life's little luxuries for a decade. This is the best setup ever, and the mini is the best bargain out there. I just added another today for a third tv. My only complaint is that the bolt is noisy-too loud for the bedroom where i originally placed it. Not a big deal though, i just moved it to the den where it can hum as loudly as it wants and i moved the mini to the bedroom which makes no noise at all. I will never cheat on you again tivo. Thank you for having me back-you are better than ever.

Up date 12-29: after a scathing 1 star review i had spectrum hi speed cable internet installed and would update after the new installation results- the tivo mini is working great all day so far no loss of signal, no lag, a huge improvement so i will have to give 4 stars for now. The phone line att-uverse dsl internet seems to have been the issue and could be something to consider when purchasing tivo mini, as mentioned below the roamio always worked with the old wifi just fine, but, the mini did not. I am content as of today with both the new internet and the mini! . So will be up dating after new internet installation on 12/29, but as of right now, the mini is junk. Out dated technology, constantly losing connection, but this could be do to my att uverse crappy internet, which will be replaced friday with spectrum. So to be fair i will update after that install, but as it sits now the mini loses connection every couple of minutes and its hooked up directly to ethernet, dont want to spend more $ on a moca set up right now until new internet is installed, but as previous reviews state no wifi come on , how archiac (ethernet or moca connection), the roamio works with wifi flawlessly with my current internet, so why is the mini losing internet directly hooked to ethernet? is it 1997 or 2017? , i was fired up to cut the cord but to buy several boxes min. $159 and monthly subscriptions is great for tivo but not the consumer. Tivo should update this product now! or get rid of it. I dont know how it gets an avg 4* review as it sits now? will up date after faster internet installation, but i think it will be the same result, hopefully i am wrong otherwise it goes back immediately!

Received a "new" tivo mini from online store with prime shipping. So, being naive, i assumed the item is new with the usually accepted definition of that word. Wrong. Tivo online registration for my account reported the item "already registered, call 1-877-367-8486. " so i did. After one hour on hold, i gave up and returned the item fro replacement. I will update if and when i received a "new" tivo mini that has not yet been "already registered. ". . Updated 09apr17: online store shipped the replacement tivo mini with no shipping charge, i noted that the outside box label showing the serial number was taped over, requiring me to find the s/n on the back of the device, but this time the registration was trouble free and instantaneous. I have no opinion on why the later box had an obscured serial number but i do have my suspicions: it is too easy to "register" an unopened box otherwise. . I removed the tivo-4 4-tuner premiere from my ethernet network and added the new mini, leaving my tivo-5 6-tuner roamio on the network. My ethernet network links the router through moca bridges to each of the two hdtv systems. The two devices work perfectly together after a few minutes of fooling with the tr30 remote ir code for my sony hdtv and forcing the creation of the tr30 remote rf link to the new mini. Done in 15 minutes and works seamlessly now.

I've had this product for a week and it doesn't work due a problem with the tivo service. They force you to use a hard wired ethernet connection between the mini and another box (i'm using a bolt) so i have wires running all over my house now but for some reason even though ethernet has been around forever tivo can't figure it out. My home network has no issues (i'm connecting at over 20mbps with only the tivo on the network and can stream netflix just fine) but the mini keeps losing the connection to the tivo service. It's a tivo problem that they can't resolve.

This mini simply does not work. . Several functions on the remote do not function properly. . You must manually restart the unit at least twice a week. . I would avoid this device unless you enjoy recurring problems

I purchased 2 of these, and initially extremely happy. But, after a couple of months i noticed both remotes kept chewing through batteries, and would get warm. One of these remotes has now failed completely (after getting very hot). . I emailed tivo's support, and din't get a response for weeks. And when they did respond, they simply directed me to buy a new remote on their store and did not address the issue. . So now i need to buy a new remote ($40) for a product i've only owned for a few months, and the tivo customer support was terrible. So, because of that i'm giving this a 1 star review. I'll circle back if i hear anything from tivo. . Update: tivo did, eventually, respond to my follow ups. The issue was escalated, and they send me a new replacement remote at no cost. The support was pretty terrible, but did eventually come through. So i'm bumping up my review!

Great little box. Keep in mind, you must already have a tivo, and a way to connect this box to that one. You can use either a coax cable (and a tivo moca setup) or ethernet. It won't connect wirelessly. The mini uses one of your tuners from your main tivo, i can record shows on the main system and watch on the mini. The remote is the same but there is some functionality loss. For example, you can't hit the zoom button to expand the preview box in the upper right corner on the menu screen. In fact, the preview box doesn't exist. Also, some of the menu items like favorite channels only matches what is on the main tivo. You can't change them from the mini. Otherwise, it acts almost as if you had another tivo without spending as much on the box or paying the service fee. . Revised down 1 star: well after 18 months it died. I have electronics from the 80 s that still work. Let s see, 80 s to 2018 vs late 2016 to early 2018 means that stuff has already lasted 20 times longer than this mini. I m not saying don t buy it. But don t expect longevity.

First of all i think the tivo roamio is an excellent and user friendly product. The tivo mini also works well and i have no complaints. Several times when i needed to use tech support it was painless and helpful. It is how the product is presented and sold where i have a problem. On tivo s website states, add a tivo mini or 10, and watch on all your tvs up to 10 minis can be added to a single network . Then it shows 4 minis linked to the roamio. . Here in lies the problem, the roamio only has 4 tuners, the roamio reserves one tuner for its self, leaving 3 tuners for the minis. Only 3 minis can be used at any one time. The website is extremely misleading! yes you can purchase 10 minis but in order to use the 4th to the 10th mini a previously used mini must be released (it automatically released after 3 hours). . After i found this out i started talking to a supervisor at tivo at tech support, she told me i could have called their company to find out all the details before i purchased the product. Just like anything in life the devil is in the details. (i asked her if reads eula or calls the company when she upgrades the software on her phone) i think tivo as a company has a need to clarify what they are selling and how it should and can be used. I am not very happy customer. . If you have need to control only 4 tvs, or you don t mind running to another room to release a tivo mini hold on a tuner, this is an excellent product. But after 3 tivo minis save your money regardless what their website states.

I'm very disappointed. My bright idea for getting a mini was to replace an older 2 tuner tivo dvr and save $12. 95/mo. And to have identical remotes as it was irritating for me using the older remote with slightly different buttons. I didn't realize that the mini can only access one tuner on my roamio and thus, it's like going back in time to a one tuner box. I was expecting full access to all the roamio tuners with the ability to switch between them. Not only can you not do this but when you change the channel using the mini the buffer is cleared for the channel you were watching. (i'll admit in hindsight that this was stupid. I used a gift card to offset most of the cost of the mini so i bought it in a rush. ) it also ties up one of the channels on the primary dvr but with 6 tuners on roamios that shouldn't normally be an issue. Another thing i hate is that if you go to the tivo menu you don't get the video window playing what you are currently watching. Setup is also a pain. Even if everything goes smoothly it takes a long time and the setup instructions aren't clear that you must connect the primary dvr to the tivo service before the mini will work. (in all honesty mine was a little more complicated as i had a moca adaptor on the old dvr and the connections have to be made to the mini in the correct order or you get an error message. The setup instructions don't mention moca adaptor) the mini does respond quickly which is about the only plus that i have for it other than to have access to the recordings and settings on the primary dvr.

. Anonymous, Pays de la Loire says

I really liked this when it worked. I connected my romio to a wired connection. My mini connects via moca to a moca adapter on my router. The mini worked fine when i have the romio connected via wifi, but that made internet providers quality worse. I called tivo customer service and they troubleshot with me for 45 minutes then told me there was a software bug that they knew about, but didn't know when it would be fixed. Tivo has always taken several months to fix bugs, even if they are critical. They had (might still have) a desktop software that let you download shows to a computer. There was a bug for almost a year that required you to set you computers date back to december of the previous year to connect to it. They were well aware of it and kept selling their non-functional software on their website. I would leave tivo in a minute if they had a real competitor.

T. Widmer, Michigan

It works but it took a lot to make that happen. The tivo mini requires either a wired ethernet cable or moca setup in your house and wired coaxial cable hooked up between your main tivo box (roamio in my case) and the mini. Notice the highlight for wired - this does not work on wireless out of the box. Unfortunately the roamio ota hd dvr is not enabled for moca. And i do not have ethernet wired up to my any of the locations where i have tv's. So both of those are absolutely worthless options for me. I was ready to return as customer service stated that this would not work on wireless. What i did do is buy a tp-link ac750 wireless extender which has a ethernet port and use that to connect to my network. I then put the roamio on the same 5g network and there's plenty of bandwidth in the house to run video across the network. Seeing as how i can run netflix, prime and hulu over the network, i figured this would work - and it did. I'm guessing that the video is not compressed to the same level (if at all) so that's a failure on tivo to make it work. Part of the allure of going ota and using tivo was the ability to link up my entire house off one hd dvr box. Thus far, it's working for me. But you will have to invest in a range extender and it might not work depending on distances and your home bandwidth. As i've set it up, it's actually 4 stars (it does freeze now and then) - but out of the box, it's a 1 star product. So 2. 5 stars but rounding down because of tivo fail.

Q. Pearce, Birmingham says

Tivo was never able to make this work with my tivo over the air romeo's. Now i am stuck with it and cannot even sell it to local cable folks because suddenlink modifies their tivo's and this will not work with them either. Do not buy this unless you can hard wire it to your router.

. Ross, Stockport

For its very high price, i expected a lot more when it comes to speed and power. It takes 5 seconds to tune from channel to channel. The time to wake up from sleeping where the tivo appears on the tv screen takes way too long. . I had technical issues right away, where the tivo mini would freeze up and only come back to life after being power cord unplugged. (i was very unhappy and frustrated with the tivo mini and returned it. )

S. McCarthy, Utah says

Works fine once you figure out the real instructions on your own. Setting up a tivo and mini on the same day requires reboots and forced updates that are not detailed in any documentation provided in the box. Expect to google a lot questions.

There is no wifi connection, so you must use wired ethernet to connect to the main tivo unit. There is an inherent firmware bug which causes the moca port to not work properly. Contacting the right person at tivo will fix it, but it was a royal pain in the butt to diagnose and find who at tivo would fix the problem. They claim there's something wrong with my moca network, but everything else runs blazingly fast. Only the tivo mini has a problem. Many people have complained about this, but tivo claims nothing is wrong. I'd list who at tivo to contact, but i don't recall. Once they do their "magic" at their end, the error message goes away and your unit will work just fine. From what i recall, you have to give them your serial number and they do some tweak to their servers to make it work. Because of all the hassle, i suggest avoiding using the unit's moca connection at all, and just sticking with plain ethernet. Most of the main tivo boxes have no built-in moca anyway, so you might as well just bite the bullet and run ethernet wiring. You'll notice your various stationary devices work faster when wired than when using wifi, and you'll lessen the burden on your mobile devices that use only wifi. Wherever you have a tv set and other devices to connect to the net, just install a cheap $10 switch, and run short wires from the switch to each device. That's how i wired my tv, dvd, apple tv, and tivo in each room. Even high-quality cat6 thernet cabling is inexpensive. You can usually run 50-100ft between devices with no problems.

Y. Kelly, North Dakota says

I have been a tivo user since series i, and last year upgraded my tivo network to a roamio pro + two minis. After a surprisingly challenging install (i eventually opted for cat6 ethernet + switch), it worked well for one year, but after a recent update, i lost the ability to watch live tv on both minis. They clearly still see the roamio and can play recordings, hulu, etc. But live tv suffers a lost signal after a few moments of viewing. Tivo's customer service department was hopeless on this after being placed on a long hold while the rep researched it, i was told it was a bug and they'd let me know "if" they fixed it. It's been well over a month with no change. After investing hundreds of dollars in this system and being a loyal customer for years, i'm ready to give up on tivo.

R. Emily, Northwest Territries

I've been using this for about a year. Works well with the tivo bolt, but does drop out occasionally and needs to be rebooted. The main problem i having now is the remote control is not reliable as it was when it was new. Have to push the buttons several times to get a response. The remote battery has been replaced - didn't help. So either the button contacts are worn, or the ir/rf transmitters are weakened. Or the mini sensors are not working well. Very frustrating.

E. Guest, Florida says

Decided to take the leap from rented set top boxes to tivo. I bought a bolt from best buy and got my mini from online store. Bolt works great. Mini not so much. After installing all the updates i have not been able to watch live tv since i got it. Called tivo tech support and apparently the issue is on their end and some kind of programming update has to be pushed out to my mini. Inconsistent information from their tech support reps also. First rep told me 24-48 hours, second rep told me 3-5 days. Why it takes to long to push out an update is beyond my comprehension but i am pretty soured to the whole tivo experience due to this lengthy turnaround to get my issue resolved. Their level 1 tech support aka the "reboot" department because that is the only technical advise they provide, is poorly trained. May have to go back to pricey rental fees for my boxes :(

. Cortney, Kent

I'm actually returning this because it does not easily interface with a tv that does not have an hdmi connection. You have to buy a special cord that allows you to split one signal out into the 3 signals needed for rca cables to work. Plus unless you can link your main tivo box up directly to your router, you have to set up a moca hub in your house. That's another 60 or 70 dollars to buy all the equipment to do this. Just decided it was too much of a hassle for too little gain. But if you have ethernet available where you have your main tivo set up or you don't mind setting up a moca network or you've got a tv with an hdmi, then everyone seems to love the extension of their primary tv to their other tvs. The little wireless adapter i had with my old tivo box was easier to use on my older equipment.

J. Edna, Cumbria says

Preface: the first mini i received (bought as "new") was actually used/activated by someone else. When i tried to activate it, i was informed by tivo that the original person must transfer it to me. Fortunately, i was able to return it easily to online store and get a new one, but it was still a hassle. I did not factor the new/used issue in my review, as it was the reseller's fault, not tivo or online store. . Ethernet vs moca: when i had issues with my first mini, i called tivo support, and the person was very helpful in trying to get things running. But he also casually told me that the mini's can be very problematic on home networks, and they usually recommend people to run on moca. After searching around many internet forums, i found that as long as i give the tivo boxes static ip's, and reset my nework any time i had to do anything with the tivo's, it seems to connect to the main roamio ok. To me, this is pretty poor design. There are too many other network devices out there that work flawlessly for this to be acceptable. . Not connected to the main tivo box? you might lose all functionality: fresh out of the box, you have to get this thing connected to a main tivo box (like a roamio). You can't just skip this through and use it for netflix, etc. After set-up, it usually let's me use streaming services if the roamio connection is lost for any reason. . Actual functionality: watching live tv/recordings over my network is decent. It's technically hd, but the picture stutters occasionally, and isn't as smooth as on the main box. I have a gigabit network, and if i use the same network connection streaming hd to other brands of boxes (roku, laptop), i have no issues, so it's not likely to be on my network. . Buying used, or selling? you must get it transferred/deactivated otherwise it's a worthless brick. . It's also too bad these things don't ship with the keyboard remote or back-lit keys, but that's not a deal-breaker as you can easily replace them for $. . The rf remote seems to work well, and the interface is the same as the roamio, which is nice.

W. Patricia, Manitoba

Great perhaps if your house is pre-wired with coax or ethernet but thought that was only in very new homes. I have to either figure out how to run a very long coax line to back bedroom where need it, try the wireless ethernet route that tivo warns against using or give up. . Love tivo (premier elite). Only use for cable tv not streaming. Tv with tivo wi-fi connection works great. I have good wi-fi in the back bedroom using two wi-fi bridges with ethernet connections to get there. About 50mb on 5hz. Looks like i need another access point in the to living room with the main tv/tivo elite. This is warned against by tivo to fool it into thinking its ethernet connected but seems like the only way to avoid having to string cable all over the house. . And with my luck it probably won't work. Had enough hours spent getting the hops to be set up right to get wi-fi to far bedroom. Have new tp-link ac5400 going to a linksys new extender, going to the older tp-link archor c-9. Didn't realize also need another access point at the tv/tivo elite and hope they all talk to each other.

Note: this is just barely a three star, i considered two stars but thought that it was not quite that bad (but it almost is). This is one of those products that just seemed to fall behind in the technology race. After a few weeks i can say this:. I had to call tivo support to troubleshoot the hookup with my main tivo unit. The online help was useless and the instructions are lacking information. The support person was very nice and guided me through everything which included activating the tivo mini, updating my tivo bolt, rebooting the tivo bolt, repeating the update and reboot on the tivo mini and then everything started to work. Of course none of this information was in the online troubleshooting guide nor in the instructions. Hard to guess all of those steps. It just seems that a company that has been in business as long as tivo should be able to come out with a clean product. Btw there is no wifi so you either have to use moca or hard wired ethernet (i used a wifi to ethernet cable adapter but the jury is still out on that too). I probably would have gone with channel master had i known

2/13/17 update: one of the two minis failed after just 22 months (so i lowered the rating to 3 stars). The failed unit entered a "boot loop" where it never got past the initial slash screen (google it). Use the following search terms (and put "tivo mini" in double quotes): "tivo mini" boot loop. . 8/26/15 update: i just purchased a 2nd mini - love them both. During setup, the newest mini indicated it could not locate the "server" unit (my roamio pro). The error message said to make sure the roamio pro had "recently connected to the internet". Although the roamio pro had connected within the last 24 hours, i forced an update on the roamio pro & that allowed the new mini to "see" the roamio pro. So, if you don't want to wait up to 24 hours to use your new mini and/or wish avoid a call to the help desk, keep this tip in mind. End of update . . Perfect companion for the tivo roamio. . Most negative reviews seem to stem from those who do not understand what a moca network is and/or how to implement a moca network. It's simple to understand & simple to implement over your cable coax, especially if you have a tivo roamio with builtin moca network capability (a "moca-ready" device). So, read up on that before you buy - you'll save yourself time & trouble. Just do a google search on tivo moca. . If your home is wired for ethernet where every device is located, you could use ethernet. But, tivo indicates a moca connection is preferred & my moca network works just fine.

Z. Taylor, Tennessee says

3 stars might be harsh, writing this review after spending the afternoon running network drops and coax cable. The software side is excellent. User interface, speed of menu navigation, and remote are the same as my roamio. What i am disappointed with is the lack of wifi, for the main dvr it would make sense for the need of a wired connection to be able to feed all of the various minis in the house, but it doesn't make sense that the mini is lacking wifi support. Reading the reviews, it seems like the typical tivo customer would have a wireless network that could support the bandwidth needs, so why not have it integrated on a $150 device? . . I also am ticked that my roamio did not have moca support built in, more my fault for not getting the "pro" model

I. Elanor, Iowa

Tivo claims you get the same experience on the mini as you get on the new tivo bolt but this is not true! while most features are present on the mini you cannot use quick mode or skip on the mini. Here is the response from tivo tech support regarding this issue. . "thank you for contacting tivo customer support. . The mini will need a software update before they can use skip mode too. I do apologize. There is no estimated date for when this would be made available. "

C. Maria, Baden-Wuerttemberg says

It takes a rocket scientist to get this to work. I gave it two days to finally give out. I'm not a rocket scientist but have networked very large systems without a hitch. The directions are written in ikea. It would have been a great solution as i'm a tivo customer since tivo first came out on march 31, 1999. Had my first unit for eight years before it had a massive heart attack and died.

K. Jackson, Yukon Territory

Still broken, false advertising as online store says it comes with and works with hulu. Tivo says it is not them as they did not write the hulu apps. Issue is with hulu and they need to update their app on the tivo mini (the app is a different version of hulu than what is on a bolt or roamio). Recent tivo update broke hulu play back of original content. Constant error 5003. Other web forums out there confirm this issue, everyone has it. It was advertised to do hulu, not true. Works on the main tivo but due to a software bug not on the mini. To reproduce the issue, play back a hulu original content show. It start with the tv ratings message, then a short 5 second transition video saying this is a made for hulu movie, then the title of the right before it starts. Then. Error 5003. I called hulu and they said this is a tivo issue. The rebooted my boxes and reset the hulu account. They confirmed my 150 mpbs super fast internet. My guess is this is a bug, they just need increase the time out on the hulu app so when there are transitions or commercials it can make it past them. For now, if you want hulu, do not buy this.

N. Pamela, Devon says

Its ok when it works but on a daily basis one or more of the 4 that i have will not be able to see the tivo box. It seemed to work just great for about 4 weeks. Then on nearly a daily basis i try to watch and it says it can not find the main tivo that feeds the mini. Sometimes i can get it to work by doing a network diagnosis, sometimes a mini re-start is required. When i called for support i got an unplug everything and restart answer, which of course does work but who is going to do that every time you want to watch tv. I made a big investment in tivo based on my prior experience with their products. I expect more than this.

F. Wayt, District of Columbia

The mini works fairly well to watch a tv program (live or recorded) from the main unit. Tivo also allows you to search programs or movies with some online services. I don't have problems watching online programming through the main unit, but with the mini's, one tv the mini occasionally freezes and needs a power cycle and with the other, it stops and the tv reports an unsupported video signal. We're now using the mini's only for regular tv programs and a roku or online store fire stick for the online programs.

V. Medina, South Gloucestershire says

If you want to expand your tivo into other rooms, this is really the only way to do it! that being said, it does what it says and it does it fairly well. In my experience i have used both ethernet and the moca adapter and the ethernet is far more reliable. With moca i had drop outs and frequent disconnects. . The other problem with these units is that the processing power is far too weak! the interface is too slow and switching from channel to channel requires some patience. . Update: i m lowering my rating after dealing with tivo support. They are horribly incompetent and just disgusting. They are on par with comcast and verizon. Pray you never need to call them because you ll be crying by the end of the session!
