Tp Link Powerline Ethernet Adapter Tl Pa4010kit (Networking Device) 2869

Review for nano powerline ethernet adapter

Price was $39.99. I was expecting a bigger performance bump with the mimo technology. I have been using tp-link av1200 3 ports with electric outlet pass throughs, but i was willing to lose the outlets and one port for better performance. It is a bit better - and the powerline upstairs is in an area that gets zero wifi connectivity - but we are still talking 15-20 mbps, where i get well over 100 on my wifi downstairs. . I'm not convinced that this is the fault of the product. The rooms are all on different circuits - sometimes different circuits within the same room. It's not an optimal situation for powerline connections. If you have a wifi dead spot in a place where you need internet, i think this technology is worth a try. I bought my 3-port models with the pass-through not too long ago and am happy with them. These are enough faster that my son might want me to use them instead.

Preface

We live in a 100 year old house with plaster walls underneath wood paneling. Pity us. Wireless will not penetrate the walls no matter how many repeaters / antennae / amps / cats with tinfoil you place. My 14 year old daughter was throwing a stereotypical teenage girl conniption fit that her wireless kept dropping out, had a 1mbps downstream, and was generally poo. After some last ditch settings adjustments i ordered these, on the advice from a popular hardware forum. While they were a little fiddly to initially pair, once i got them installed, it was magic. Digital unicorns flew out of my daughter's tumblr feed at the speed of 30mbps, and she no longer things i'm a moron. . In other words, works awesome. Best nano powerline ethernet adapter | Tp Link-Networking Device Review ( Sep 2019 ) Details TP-Link AV600 Nano Powerline ethernet Adapter Starter Kit, Powerline speeds up to 600Mbps (TL-PA4010KIT) Faster speed: wired connection with high-speed data transfer rate of up to 600mbps, ideal for hd video or 3d video streaming and online gaming. I am using these to bring a network connection into my attic for an internet-connected whole house fan. Now i turn it on and off using my smartphone! summer days here regularly get above 100 degrees, causing the attic to reach 140+ degrees on particularly hot days. That's well outside the operating temperature for these units, but they've survived one summer and still going strong! . . Home ac wiring was never intended to carry data. That we can get upwards of 100mbps or more out of these powerline ethernet units is a testament to the advancement of this technology over the past 10 years or so. . The key to getting good performance out of these units is to make sure they are electrically close to each other. Ideally, they should be on the same breaker circuit but if that's impractical then put one as close to the breaker panel as possible. Since my attic is just about as far away from the breaker as anything else (all the way above the second story), the other is on an outlet that is about 15 feet from the breaker. I regularly get 20-40 mbps between the units, which is way more than adequate for turning the fan on and off. . I've used some other units to plug in laptops or computers when i need a temporary connection somewhere else in the house. For those, i get about 150mbps. As others have said, though, the units themselves have only 100mbps ethernet jacks, so of course i can't get the full 150 to a single device. But it's good to know there is ample headroom for the whole network of powerline units. Remember, that's 150 mbps that needs to be shared among all the units, so if one device is saturating the network at 100 mbps, there's still room for others to send and receive. . I've been very happy with these tp-link units. I'll get more if i need to add more network jacks. -Z. Sheila

PROS
  • Don't buy these expecting to get 600mbps. There are variables that will affect your speed, your interior wiring has a lot to do with it. Just because a receptacle is near another one doesn't mean they are on the same circuit. The wiring could run from your first receptacle all the way to the location of the electrical panel and then on a different circuit all the way back to the receptacle where you want your receiver. I'll explain why i'm giving these 5 stars even though i'm not getting even 100mbps speeds. First, i live in a home that was built in the mid 70's, approx. 40 yrs old. The room with the router is directly above the room that i recently bought an android tv box for. The room upstairs is on a different circuit breaker than the room downstairs. I pay for100mbps download speed from cox cable. . Computer 1 directly connected to the router via cat5 network cable gets about 65mbps avg. (sometimes as high as 80mbps). Computer 2 802. 11n wifi connection in the downstairs room gets about 40mbps avg. Android tvbox with vpn service turned off 802. 11n wifi connection in the downstairs room only getting 10mbps avg. Android tvbox with vpn service turned on 802. 11n wifi connection in the downstairs room gets a pitiful 4mbps (thats right, four! ). Android tvbox with vpn service turned off using the tp link av600 gets 45mbps. Android tvbox with vpn service turned on using the tp link av600 gets 20mbps. . So even though i'm only getting 20mbps speeds the powerline adapters increased my speed 5x's and i'm happy that i don't have to cut up any drywall or drill any holes to run network cable. . Your speeds may be completely different, it all depends on your connection speed, your devices, your wiring, the way the circuits are ran and the way the breaker box is wired. I would suggest just forking out the cash to try them out and if they don't work for you send em back.
  • I can't believe this works as well as it does. My computer is upstairs in the attic, on the opposite side of the house. I was previously using wireless and an extender. At best, i was getting 7-12 mbps and the connection was extremely unstable. . Plugged these bad boys up though and wow, it's like night and day. I'm getting 17 mbps (our max speed. Dsl, i know) and 100% stable connection. It truly is like my computer is right there at the modem. . Some tips: avoid as many surge protectors, outlet extenders, etc. As you can, as that seems to add noise. One or two seem to be fine, based on other reviews. I have my two devices plugged directly into their own outlets. . Try to be on the same circuit before the breaker. I'm not; mine definitely runs through the breaker but it seems to be okay. The manufacturer doesn't recommend it though. I assume higher speeds would be more affected. . Do not panic if it seems to desync when you first plug it up. These devices come with an auto-power saving function and when it isn't synced with each other or your computer isn't running, they turn off. They will turn back on when you sync the devices or turn on your computer after syncing them. You only need to sync them once.
CONS
  • When i first purchased these, i was looking for a cheap way to connect an older pc without wifi. After about 8 months, i moved some stuff around in my house and decided to use these for my primary computer. What i discovered is that it is impossible for these to support more than 100mbps even though it is advertised as 500mbps. The reason for this is that it uses a "fast ethernet" interface which has a max speed of 100mbps; no matter what. This is clearly false advertising. I have been a fan of tp-link for a long time and never once did i think that they would pull something like this. How disappointing. . 2 stars because they work wonderfully if you don't care about speed. . Really wishing that i had noticed this sooner so that i could have returned them for a refund and purchased the ones that have a gigabit interface.
  • I ordered this item and ended up returning it. I have a feeling that the product is good; however, the instructions are way too simplistic. They show a couple of pictures with no real instructions. After i set it up and it didn't change anything, i reached out to support. It looks like support was shipped overseas (shame on you, tp link), and the guy who was helping me had very poor english skills. I'm not sure he even understood what i was saying. He sent me some links that did not work. I returned the item and got one from another manufacturer. Again, both brands got great reviews, but the new one had much better instructions and i was able to get it to work (what a difference it made! ).
  • Didn't work. This was for a relatively small house, so it should be nowhere near the distance limit. I get around 250mbps plugged directly into my modem. In this room, on a slower 2. 4ghz wifi connection, i get around 15-20mbps. Using the av600, i get around 20-30mbps. It's an improvement, but it's nowhere near my internet speed. I heard of some people having issues with the actual connection speed being around half of the advertised speed (so i thought the av600 should do at least 300mbps), but this is just abysmal. I will be returning this soon if tech support can't help me.

nano powerline ethernet adapter TP-Link AV600 Nano Powerline ethernet Adapter Starter Kit, Powerline speeds up to 600Mbps (TL-PA4010KIT) (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

I live in a house with 3 other people who are using the internet just as much as i am whether it is for streaming videos or playing games. Before i used this, i was getting, not kidding, less than 5 mbps to my xbox wirelessly. Hard wire is out of the question since it would be so long. My friend pointed these things out to me and i was a little skeptical, but they work! super easy to hook up, too. The instructions are clear and precise and when i first plugged it in my xbox now is receiving up to 25-35 mbps. This is still nothing amazing, but my internet is garbage already - so that can't be blamed on anyone but my isp. These things do the job they intend to do, though. Before i was nearly unable to do any online gaming, now i have no lag whatsoever. Highly recommend!

There was only like 3 options that i can think of which is one run cables through walls and stuff, uhhh, no way. Has anybody ever tried to patch walls and coloring? 2nd get repeaters, which really won't work in my case because there's no plug in the stairwell, so i have to use these powerline adapters. I have to say that my internet was dropping a lot and now with these powerline adapters it significantly reduces the internet drops. Tp link wins again for me and i highly recommend these if your internet is dropping a lot due to distance and walls/structure."

(0) Question: To what do the "10/100" and "10/100/1000" ports that you are able to choose from refer? how would one know which to choose and what are the pros/cons?

(1) Question: Does the tl-pa8010 block the top outlet when plugged in the wall just like the tl-pa8010p (pasthrough) does?

(2) Question: If i want to connect 3 computers, can i buy two starter kits or do i need to buy one starter kit + two single adapters?

BV-Tech 9 Port PoE Switch 8 PoE Ports 1 Uplink Port 130W 802.3af

I've had this switch in service for close to a year now, and it has worked great for the most part. I do have what appear to be a couple dead ports that will provide l2 connectivity but not poe. I am still giving the switch 4 stars because these ports were originally connected to cameras mounted outdoors, so i'm not ruling out that faulty grounding or nearby lightning strikes were actually the cause of this.

The poe-sw801 is an 8-port 10/100mbps ieee802. 3af power over ethernet switch with a total of 130 watts of poe power (up to 150w total power consumption); all 8 ports provide up to 15. 4w each. It also has one ethernet uplink port to allow for communication without sacrificing any poe ports.

Bv-tech 9 Port Poe Switch 8 Poe Ports 1 Uplink Port 130w 802.3af (poe sw800e) FAQ.

Prompt shipping and heck of a value. I ended up purchasing two poe switch units for my home security camera install. These units work flawless with the reolink nvr and cameras. I have a 16 camera nvr and a 8 camera nvr, working together and these support my network perfectly. I couldn't be happier. . I did later "upgrade" to another of their units (gigabit 4 port) for my farthest distance from the router. I now use this 8ch unit in my home for a remote location supporting external cameras. -Notice from O. Mary, South Tyneside

TP-Link AV2000 2-Ports Gigabit Powerline ethernet Adapter Kit, Power Outlet Pass-through, Powerline speeds up to 2000Mbps TL-PA9020P KIT

"the tl-pa9020p powerline kit equips any room with blazing fast internet by transforming your outlets into ethernet ports for reliable wired connection to all of your devices, no matter how far from your router. With 2x2 mimo, the adapters intelligently transfer data through two streams for maximized speed. The homeplug av2 then rapidly transfers your data through the electrical wiring within the walls of your home. Beamforming additionally boosts overall performance by strengthening your signal towards powerline devices. Game on in crisp, clear 4k from any room in your household without staring down a loading screen. The terms av2000 and 2000mbps are derived from applicable specifications and refer to the theoretical maximum physical-layer data transfer rate. Those terms are used on this product solely to indicate its compatibility with other av2000 or 2000mbps powerline devices. Actual data speeds vary and are limited by the product s ethernet port and other network conditions such as data traffic, electrical noise, and wiring issues. If you are uncertain about your network conditions, you should consult an it professional to assist in selecting a networking product. "

The F.A.Q. for tp-link av600 nano powerline ethernet adapter starter kit, powerline speeds up to 600mbps tl-pa4010kit

I've been a network engineer for over 10 years and ever since i've dealt with computers, cabling is one of the worst aspects of the job. I can't tell you how many times i've run/extended cat3/cat5/cat5e/cat6 cabling and ended up terminating both ends and testing them. Some situations are easier than others when you're allowed to run a cable across the floor or above ceiling tile. But in other situations like getting networking in a certain room in your house can be a total pain in the butt. . For the average home user, the only way to get networking from point a to your house to point b is either wired with cabling or use wifi & bridging if the wifi didn't extend far enough. When powerline technology came out it added convenience of using existing power cabling but still was a little flaky and troublesome. But since then, powerline has jumped leaps and bounds since and is much more reliable & faster. . When it came time to buy originally back in july 2012, i put a lot of research into looking into the latest powerline solution for my home. I wanted something with high performance and the current version of "high performance powerline devices" allows 500mbps transfer rate. Even still, i was having trouble selecting which manufacturer to go with (belkin, cisco, netgear, etc). After my homework (and despite netgear's horrible sales support), i ended up with the netgear powerline 500mbps nano adapter - starter kit (xavb5101). . Despite the insane price point (currently $87. 99 on online store - 12/13/2013; i bought these for $108 back in july 2012), the netgear adapters worked wonderfully in my home. I was able to maintain faster throughput from device to device while on wired ethernet while not saturating my wifi network. However, over the course of a year and a half, the number of devices i had in my house grew considerably (especially over wifi). . In the past year, i added a few cell phones, a laptop, a tablet, a roku 3, a western digital tv live, 2 chromecasts, and a new smart tv. Because of that, my wifi started to become degraded because every single one of those new devices was connecting to my network over wifi. When multiple devices would start streaming things like netflix and i was doing transfers from my media server to a pc, netflix would stutter and my wifi throughput would literally crawl slower than a snail on a salt bed. That's when i realized i needed to invest in more powerline adapters for certain rooms to speed up transfers as well as help reduce the load of my wifi network. . But you see, despite being pleased with my netgear adapters, i didn't want to spend another $100. A friend of mine (who i told the netgear adapters about) bought another brand of powerline av 500mbit adapters from a company called tp-link to save money. He said they worked pretty good. After finding out that they were $35 on online store, i immediately pulled the trigger. I mean after all, i had a word of mouth approval from a friend and you can't argue saving over $50 vs another set of my netgear adapters. The result? absolutely no difference in speeds. . Just like the netgear adapters, these are essentially plug & play. There were literally no problems connecting these in my house. I went to the living room where i needed wired connectivity and plugged these up to the wall. The tp-link adapter immediately recognized my existing netgear powerline adapters and the 2nd led (powerline led indicator) immediately lit up. I plugged in my small 10/100 switch to it and then my roku & tv up to it and the 3rd led (ethernet indicator) lit up and the devices could not only talk to other devices on my lan, but they had internet access as well. I personally noticed no difference in throughput speeds both within the lan and the internet. . The *only* difference between the tp-link set and the netgear is the that the tp-link doesn't tell you the "current speed" of that adapter's powerline network. The netgear has multicolored leds that indicate the speed of your powerline network. While this normally won't matter to a lot of people, it will tell you whether you are having degraded performance within your home's electrical wiring. It also aids in troubleshooting as well. But it's not a show stopper. . Personally, i would recommend this product over the netgear adapters i have. 1. The price is a lot cheaper. 2. Tp-link has a two year warranty vs the netgear's one year warranty. If you're really concerned on whether you're buying "a crap product", rest assured that this works just as good as the bigger name brands and you have an extra year of product care! . . Highly recommended.

Bought this to get wireless signal into an area of my large multi-level house that previously had zero signal. I used this with an additional old netgear wifi router that i had. Setup was incredibly easy-plug and go it's that simple. Put one device in office where i have desktop, cable modem and linksys 1200 (what i would refer to as my main router). Plugged directly into wall socket and put ethernet cord from device to linksys router. Second unit was put in faraway bedroom with additional netgear router. Was getting super fast 60 mbps when speednet tested which is great but that is of course in same room as router. Tried different placements to see how it would act to get wifi signal throughout half of house and was getting about 25 mbps depending where i stood. Would have placed it in a more open location if i was trying to get entire part of house a better signal but really just wanted it for one bedroom. These little guys are cheaper than wifi boosters or relay devices and not using any of your wifi signal to operate, pretty happy as of right now!

3x faster than av500, to a distant room. My xav5101 was getting 57mbps. Tlp-9020 is getting 174mbps. I measured both, using the new tpplc utility, to have a level comparison. That's way more than i imagined, with a 1960's house electrical wiring. . Btw - this is the version to get tl-pa9020 . The pass-thru version tl-pa9020p will block the upper outlet. Either way, you are left with one outlet, so why pay more for the pass-thru version? . . We have come a long way from powerline phone-jacks (that never worked, on this same pathway) to now having 174mbps network speed. Perhaps i dated myself there.

. Joanna, Delaware says

Really works just as advertised, as easy as plugging in and going. Set up a router as an access point in a spotty area and now i can get signal where i couldn't before. . I was dumb and didn't read directions - you must plug into outlet (not a power strip) or the signal will degrade. I saw about a 70% degradation when i used power strips on both ends.

G. McCarthy, Northern Territory

To be clear, i was a bit hesitant to buy a solution like this as i was unsure how well the bandwidth would work across my power lines. For anyone who is hesitant, do not fear as these things are totally worth it. . I have a house that only has two cable outlets, one in the living room and one in the master bedroom. As such, i did not have any choice to have it in my office where i have a gaming desktop that i like to use. It does not have wireless so i found myself in a bit of a dilemma. I was contemplating purchasing a wifi adapter for it, but the wifi can sometimes be unpredictable so i found these. . To this day, which is a month now, i have not had a single link drop, nor do i get speeds any less then what i get plugged into my router. Latency for gaming is great and i honestly have not had any issues. . Seriously! no issues! what gives? i was expecting a margin of error somewhere, ie. Packet loss, bandwidth degredation, latency, etc. But i have had nothing go wrong. So color me impressed. . Let me clarify, you will not get exactly 500mbps transmitted back and forth. Doing an iperf test i only got about 270mbps of traffic between the two, but that could possibly be my device as well. Regardless, if you have a standard need to get internet to another room and you don't have google fiber or an equivalent fios service, then these will work great in your home. . Easy to setup, really just plug in and play. :)

I love these things. My roommate introduced them to me when we lived in a 3 story duplex. We're both gamers but he was on the top floor and i was in the basement, so wifi wasn't really a great option for either of us with the router and modem on the first floor. We used these single ones for our computers and got others that supported multiple ethernet cables for lan parties. The connection is super reliable (i play dota2 where any lag can get you killed. ). . I have had issues recently where i don't have a complete connection, but i think the problem lies in the ethernet cable it came with and not the powerline adapter itself. But i've used these things for years without issue, so i would highly recommend them.

My wife, the kids and i like to call her "never satisfied" instead of wife or mom, has been wanting me to build our own home. We finished it just before the holidays and we now call her "satisfied for the time being". All joking aside, when we hooked up our devices to the wifi in the new home there was some very frustrating results. Have fun with your cable internet company by calling and telling them you're having speed issues. They will blame you. I still remember the customer service reps voice, "you have waaaaaay too many devices hooked up! " i told her yes we probably do, but your commercial says mom, dad, kids can all have wifi all over the house for one low price. Biggest problem was, i do a lot of my planning and designing from the master bedroom on my laptop. So the original tests:. Cable modem/router is in a central location of the middle floor. It's in the living room where it can be hardwired to the family pc and family television for streaming movies. Family pc (hardwired): 3 tries on speedtest, 58. 7 mbps average download/5. 1 mbps upload. Those are impressive numbers since our cable company only says, 30 mbps download/4 mbps upload. Kid pc 1 (wifi 14 ft above modem/router, directly above) 35 mbps download/4. 5 mbps upload. Kid pc 2 (wifi 14 ft above modem router, 8 ft west of modem router):16 mbps download/4. 2 mbps upload. Master bedroom work laptop (wifi 14 ft above modem router, 22 ft south of modem router) 0. 3 mbps download/3. 7 mbps upload. Note on this one that it could sometimes reach 10 mbps, but consistently was below 1 mbps download. Other devices hooked up to the wifi, 2 xbox 360s, a ps3, 3 iphones, 1 android phone, 2 kindle fires and a nintendo wii. . Step 1: attempt to boost wifi range. I bought a netgear wifi range extender. I turned my work laptop on and sure enough, my previous 2-3 bars of reception was now maxed out at 5. I was pretty happy; then i tested it. My download speed had not improved any. It had even dropped. I'm not for sure how i made it through an engineering degree without understanding the difference between "range extender" and "signal booster". Either way, i had to return it and have a review of it in my review history here. . Step 2: attempt to boost not extend the wifi. Well, stupid me, i guess i'm not the one with a comprehension problem. It seems boost and extend mean the same thing. I bought a product that plugged directly into my laptop's usb port and had two antennas on it. Once again, i had 5 bars of reception, but had lost download speed. . Brainstorm time: engineering degree has to come in handy for something besides building houses. Truth is, it was common sense that steps 1 and 2 would fail. Both of those were adding yet another device to pull wifi strength from my laptop. At this point, i was tired of trying to figure out how to fix this problem and called the cable company back. I told them i don't want to talk to customer service, just send a tech out here. It's common knowledge that the tech people know the secrets and will tell them to you if they are in person and not on a recorded phone call that their boss may hear. Tech guy comes out, downloads new firmware for our modem/router, it did improve the speed somewhat, but it wasn't satisfactory. I needed 30 mbps on my work laptop in the master bedroom (now known as the black hole of wifi land). . I was talking to the tech guy and he told me, "let me show you a product. I use it in my house, we have the same problem you have". This tp-link tl/pa401 was the product. My response, "soooo, you hook it up to the power outlet and it shoots the internet through your power? " and that was that. These were the results from the work laptop, with this product paired up, in the distant master bedroom:. 53 mbps download/5 mbps upload. . Yes, more than 40x faster than the wifi signal was giving me. I went from downloading work files at 89 kb/s to 4. 1 mb/s. . If i have any complaint about this product it is that they should have made it more difficult to install. My wife and the two kids spent all day trying to complicate it. She was ready to pack it up and send it back. . Easy install directions: plug one adapter into wall outlet near cable modem/router. Run ethernet cord (two included in mine) from the modem/router to the adapter. Plug the other adapter in a power outlet, in the same room, doesn't matter if you're taking it to another room, just do it nearby so you can easily pick up the "pairing" signal. Push the pair button on each. Unplug the second adapter and take it to the computer/xbox/ps3 whatever you're hooking it up to, plug it in the nearest outlet and run an ethernet cord from the device to the adapter. That's it. Like others, i didn't use the cd that came with it. I've had the product for about two weeks and have consistently had 50-60 mbps download speeds with it. . One bit of advice: the ethernet cords that are included are 5-6 ft in length. I ended up ordering longer ones. Honestly though, the price of this adapter set and cords was much better than the option the cable company rep gave me, "upgrade to internet pro". It would have been a hundred dollars more per month on our bill. . Now i plan on buying some more of these to use in new houses we build. It seems every house we build has a dead area when it comes to wifi signal and we are going to throw them in to make customers even happier. Oh and never satisfied now wants one for her work laptop too. . This has replaced my previously reviewed toothbrush holder as my best purchase ever on online store. Buy it. Install it without complicating the install process. And you'll be on here writing a review like this one.

Having looked at previous generations of this technology, my expectation werent high as to how well it would work. I was proved wrong very fast. . I had it working in about 30 seconds. Got a little more speed by changing the qos settings to internet. The best thing i can tell you is to not plug them into a surge protection outlet strip. The electronics used interfere with what the av600 is doing. In that case you will see intermittent or slow connections. Out of 10 pings, you will probably drop 7 of them. . I posted two live stream videos today (one to facebook and one to youtube). The video quality was better than what i was expecting. I can plug these into a 6 outlet adapter that you can use to get 6 outlets from two. To keep one outlet from being obscured, i do have the av600 plugged into a 12 inch extension cord but that doesnt interfere with the operation of the tp-link av600.

Excellent product. I was having trouble with our wireless system passing through in floor radiant heaters, etc. I would only about 40 of my 120 mbps when only 20 feet away downstairs. Tried using an extender and that didn't really help, so i tried these instead. Direct transfer of the full 120 mbps through my existing wiring downstairs to my laptop (with hardline connection from the laptop to the adapter). . I could easily attach a wireless extender downstairs off this adapter for better coverage, but intead chose to buy a few more of these and connect each smart tv directly to the adapter. Installation was as advertised. Truly plug and play. Couldn't be more satisfied!

First of all, the units work. They connect and you get a good ethernet connection. I can consistently get 55 mbs to 60 mbs download speed through an online speedtest site. I was happy with that but i kept getting intermittent disconnections from the internet that would last from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. . Just recently my internet provider upgraded my internet speed to 100 mbs download. Nice! when i tested my connection i was still at the 55 mbs to 60 mbs download speed. After talking with my internet provider i decided to do some testing. . I connected my laptop directly to the modem. Wow! 100 mbs download speed. Then i ran a long ethernet cable to my desktop. A whopping 120 mbs download speed. Connecting the tp-link i once again got 55 mbs to 60 mbs download speed. . So, not sure if the tp-link is limited or if it has something to do with my power and any interference that might be coming across the power line. What i do know is connecting direct via ethernet doubles my download speed. . I'm still happy with the tp-link, but now i know what is possible. Maybe i need to thank about how to run an ethernet cable so i can connect directly.

So i've been dabbling in electronics for years but by no means of my expert. We've gotten to the age where we want our stuff to be simple we wanted to work. We don't want to have to deal with a lot of set up or technical terminology that borders on grey's anatomy type stuff. When my son introduced me to these i told him that there is absolutely no way. I don't want to spend the money, i would rather just run a hard line. He insisted and he is in the business, if you will. But i resisted and i can tell you that i resisted too long. They got to the point where he bet me not only the cost of the devices but an additional 10 bucks if it didn't work. It's at 60 seconds to set it up plug it out one side plug it in on the other side, turn it on perform a speed test perform a packet test pull out wallet - give son &10. Have had them for quite a while now and they still keep going just as strong as the day i bought them. I am a true believer now. One thing he wanted me to make sure that i posted on this review, pay attention to where you plug a minute. If you are going to cross circuit breakers, they will have diminished performance. But if you are plugging them in an area that is on the same circuit they will blow your mind away.

I can neither explain this magic nor can i recommend it enough. It really makes no sense to me, and there's no way that it should work so well, but it does. In my apartment, we pay for 60mbs. On the wireless dongle my tower came with, i was getting around 8mbps on a good day. On the replacement dongle i bought, i got somewhere in the teens to the low twenties. When i plugged this guy in, that number shot up to 59mbps, and it's stayed in the high fifties ever since. I play games online with friends fairly often, and i'd been having problems with lagging and getting kicked for years. I was really only hoping for a stable connection, and i found a product that i'll probably never be without ever again. My room mate also got the single version of this adapter to add his room onto the network, and he verifies that the magic is real. I've seen some negative reviewers who say that it doesn't work very well for them, and while i can't explain that either, i would guess that it just depends on how your house is wired electrically. The building i'm in is relatively new, and i'm not very far from the living room where the modem/router and the powerline adapter there, so it's possible that it has a pretty direct line to the powerline adapter in my bedroom. There are a thousand walls in the way, for some reason, so wifi just wasn't cutting it. I've had this powerline adapter set for two months now, and i've yet to experience any hiccups. I would highly recommend at least trying this out, especially if you aren't getting the mbs you pay for or you're a gamer who needs a solid and stable connection.

Works well. I have a ps4 pro and the wifi connection is terrible. Its sad that sony is actually aware of this & their only advice is to get a hardline into it. My router is in a different room & it can't be moved. It wasn't even that far away. My apple tv and phone had no problem connecting to it in the living room. . Anyways, i got this because i use playstation vue for television as well as the usual streaming services like netflix and games. I would constantly get kicked off the network & it was becoming unbearable, like literally every hour it would go down or start running super slow. I did some searching on the internet and found that unfortunately i wasn't the only person with this problem on their ps4. I got this upon the positive reviews from other ps4 owners. . Set up was super simple. Took all of 30 seconds. The connection has been great so far. My internet speed is 60 down and with this when i tested the network on the ps4 it came in at 40, which is way more acceptable than the 15mb/s download i was getting prior with the ps4 wifi. Some of the reviews here on online store say after a few months they start to suck, so i guess we'll see. Thus far though it has been great and i haven't dropped my network connection nor has it slowed to a crawl either. I would definitely recommend these for people who are having the same issue i am and can't move their router. . Oh and side rant, the playstation customer service guy suggested just running a lan cable through the entire length of my house and painting it the same color as my floor to blend in. Thanks guy

This adapter works far better than i thought it would. We had so many wireless devices in our home that nothing worked very well at all. I used this and a small switch to connect our entertainment center devices (tv, blu-ray, xbox, and satellite box) over ethernet to free up our wireless a bit. It works so well that i regret spending a year trying to keep wireless working in our house! i had my doubts it would work, because our house is split into two electrical drops off the main drop, each powering a separate breaker panel. My living room is on a completely different breaker box than the outlets near my router. But, it works flawlessly, even on that configuration! i just followed the instructions and in about 2 minutes of work i had ethernet connectivity to my entertainment center. Our other wireless devices have more room to work effectively, and ethernet to the tv means streaming seems much more stable than before. Next step is to place another in my office for the desktop computer. It sure beats running cable everywhere!

We bought this to connect xbox one s gaming system directly to our router. Before we purchased this gadget we were connecting our xbox one wirelessly through home wifi. Games would drop all the time, always got error messages, "can't find wifi network" or "not signed in". Totally annoying and slow game speeds. Luckily i stumbled on this product and now xbox appears "wired" to router, eventhough it is connected in upstairs game room. We no longer get annoying messages, and game speeds are faster. Sometimes when other devices are connected to wifi, the speed of game will slow down/lag, but that's because streaming netflix or videos on 2-3 other devices via wifi. Not, this devices fault. Highly recommended getting one for your gaming system since, they always work better wired in directly.

After some research i purchased this product over the netgear wifi extender due to having multiple wireless devices already on my network and to have a more "hard wired" wireless approach. I received the adapters quickly with prime. The setup was so easy i had to run to make this review. I unboxed and although the reviews and instructions say not to plug into a power strip i did anyway and on both sides. The circuit where my swann dvr is located is not on the same circuit. The dvr is clear on the other side of my 4 bedroom single story house. All i did was plug in the adapters, plug in the cat5 cables, power on the dvr and the router, push the two link buttons (not at the same time) on the adapters and i was streaming live video on my android phone. Awesome! i would've given this product more than 5 stars. If this review helped you please vote my review. . Update: 5/5/16 still working like a champ! . Update: 9/19/17 still working hard!

Pros:. Does the job but with an additional purchase (see cons), averaging about 394/500mbps and oddly enough it seems to be compatible with other brands such as zyxel and netgear. . Cons:. . Cat5 ethernet cables. Why? ! the packaged cables with this product literally will choke your speed to 100mbps max for a product that advertises 500mbps; cat5 cables have known crosstalk degradation in regards to signal transmission and haven't been used since the 90s. No wonder so many people are complaining about poor performance. . Suggestions:. Spring for some cat6 or cat5e cables which are both graded for 1gbps (1000mbps) transmission. Additionally if you're planning on using this near the kitchen, entertainment centers, or near portable house phones- spring for some shielded cat6 or cat5e to further reduce electronic interference to your signal. . If you can, try to install this and your router near an outlet closest to your fuse/circuit panel; you can obviously make this work regardless of the location, but the closer the fuse panel this will help greatly reduce attenuation on the signal and likely give you a boost to your throughput speed.

I purchased this because the wi-fi connection in my room is absolute garbage due to its distance from our router. I decided to go for an ethernet option, and since i live in an apartment, ethernet over power was the best option since i can't rewire the place. So simple to use, and works like a charm! i play a lot of video games and although the speeds aren't as fast as my wireless internet (i blame the old power lines), i can play comfortably with no lag. Very happy with this purchase.

Q. Paige, Stockton-on-Tees says

Yes, the fastest powerline adapter that i've tried (out of four); no, not as fast as advertised. I also have my desktop connected wirelessly to a netgear ac1750 router. The powerline gives me about 80mbps with a 15 ms ping, wireless ac gives me about 90mbps with a 6 ms ping. I have a pretty optimal electrical setup for the powerline, but there's still a slight degradation in the performance when the air conditioner kicks in. So the powerline is slightly more expensive for slightly worse performance, but it's useful in my setup. Don't get powerline thinking it's better than wireless, get it when you can't run an ethernet cable or use wireless.

A. Courtney, Solihull

I have bought and used the tp-link av500 gigabit powerline adapters in the past. While they did work, they were not as fast as advertised. I was never able to get more than about 200 mbps from them. I recently built a new computer and placed it in a bedroom quite a way from my home office. I decided to try this tp-link av1200 gigabit poverline starter kit, model tl-pa8010. I was pleasantly surprised to find i am getting speeds of between 800-1000 mbps with these adapters. Compared to the asus usb-n10 wifi, or the netgear a6100 ac600 wifi adapters i have tried to connect to my network, the tp-link adapters are much, much faster. These adapters are well worth the price.

X. Benton, Montana says

This device has held up well within the first six months of use. The download/upload speeds may or may not be as fast as a wired connection based on your home setup, but i can assure you the connection is a lot more reliable. This is very important in online gaming where ping is the most important factor to reduce lag. . A word of advice: powerline adapters use the electrical wiring in your house in order to send network signals between each transmitter. If there is a lot of power being used in your house, the adapter will not be as effective. Be sure to place this adapter in the wall (not in a power strip) and all by itself away from other electrical appliances(in the outlet by itself). Even plugging my phone charger into the slot underneath it causes my download speeds to go from 25mb/s to like 8mb/s. Because of this, my connection speeds are a lot faster when my family is out of the house. . If you are fully aware of what i stated above, then i would highly recommend you to buy this if you want faster ping and a more reliable connection. Your download/upload speeds are going to rely on several other factors such as electrical wiring, distance from router, router type, housing material, etc. Etc.

Much better than the av 200 as interference (high current loads on the same circuit/dirty power) don't completely disable the device, requiring an unplug and replug. Rather, it just takes a while to re establish connection after the fact. Somewhat annoying, but better than going down two flights of stairs every time the dehumidifier kicks on. Can't recommend if your internet connection is used for video conferencing/time or connection critical workloads. Anything else that works well disconnected for a minute or so that can be fixed with a refresh is a. Ok; that is, if your home/use case scenario has anything but perfectly clean power and isolated circuits. It happens every few days or so for a minute at a time. I also use digital outlet timers to power cycle the devices every day just to help with reliability, as it seems to improve the frequency that this happens. All my adapters are run on moderately loaded (20-40%) at any given time 15amp circuits.

Installing it was a breeze. All that was required was to connect one box to the router and the second box, in a different room, to a computer. Period! luckily, i had the power outlets that were open, so i haven't try to make it work using power extension. They say it wouldn't work, but i would not be surprised if it worked just fine, as long as the power extender is a simple one with no power spike protection circuit. Perhaps someone else could try it and post the results. When installing just make sure that your pc has only one network adapter enabled. Usually, you will find that there is also a wireless adapter. Make sure to disable it (control panel - network and internet - network and sharing center - change adapter settings). Also, enable the encryption, which is easy to do. Just press the button on one box, then, within 2 minutes press the button on the second box. Now your communication on the power lines will be secure (encrypted). Not doing it open up a chance that your neighbor might find easy way to connect to your lan. Overall, the installation is a no brainer, and you get all the benefits with a pretty inexpensive solution. They also include the tools which you won't need to use to just get going.

Top nano powerline ethernet adapter Review

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

N. Widmer, Devon says

I've been using the av500 adapters for a couple years now. The speed is not as promised and it does drop connections often. This is the main reason for the voluntary recall on this item by tp-link. Overall i would say they are still a good option. I wanted to take part in the recall and upgrade to the av600 to get closer to the promised speeds. My main issue is with the company myself. For the recall you can either call, e-mail, or fill out the request form online. I've filled the online form out twice, e-mailed three times, and called and left angry messages for the lack of response twice by phone. I have heard nothing. This is over a period of three weeks. Customer service at tp-link is awful and i think everyone should be warned. For the recall, i think a class action lawsuit needs to be started because their voluntary recall solution is not a genuine solution on tp-link's part. . 1/17/17. After having to open bbb and california case files against tp-link, the company responded and settled the matter. I hope they will provide better customer service to their customers in the future.

I read that often powerline adapters are better than wifi if your router is far from your computer, so i bought this and tried it to see how it worked. I've been using it for 2 years, and i would always get questionable speeds. My isp is comcast, and i pay for about 60 mbps. Anytime i would run a speed test, i would always get maybe 10 mbps max download. I always figured it was just comcast being terrible, and i lived with it. After 2 years (i bought this nov 2015), i finally decided to see if getting a wifi adapter would be better. . The wifi adapter blows this thing out of the water. My desktop is very far from my router, so i actually have a wifi extender that's closer to my desktop. When my desktop connects to directly to my wireless router at 2. 4ghz at 3 (out of 4) bars, i'm getting 30-40 mbps. When my desktop connects to the extender at 5ghz (4 of 4 bars) i'm getting 50-60 mbps! . . Needless to say, i think getting a good router and a good wifi adapter are better than using a powerline adapter. Maybe the wiring in my house is old so that affects (my house was built in the early/mid 90s) the speed. I don't know. But i would suggest using wifi more than a powerline adapter. . I will say, the powerline adapter is working fine after 2 years. It's just much slower than wifi.

* the final straw *. . Well after one month of stability all four units refused to talk to each other again even after unplugging for minutes. Re-downgrading to 1 star, and i now use a different manufacturer. . * update *. Following the suggestion of the commenter (thanks) i contacted tp-link. Upgrading to 2 stars. I found customer support to be responsive but minimally helpful. All i got were several days' worth of "stock" questions and answers and revisits of simple steps. Among the suggestions:. . "please check whether there are electrical equipments which have electromotor inside around the powerline adapters. Such equipments can be air-condition, washing-machine, electric-fans etc. Please move such equipment to other place or move powerline adapters away from such equipment. ". . I ended up reluctantly moving the powerline unit to a "quieter" but less useful part of the house. It has been mostly stable since then, but i am in "wait and see" mode since this is the third such relocation. . * original review *. . I've had these for four months now and they are worst than unstable. . I bought four of these to set up a home network. Without reason one or more of these things would lose contact with the others and the only way to fix this as others have noted is to unplug it from and replug it into the wall socket. Sometimes that will clear it, other times you have to wait a few minutes. . The symptom is always the same. When we lose contact with the internet, we would look at the plug and the middle powerline network light is off, and it never recovers. I would think the system would figure out to reset itself. . At first these things stayed up a week or two at a time. Now i have to unplug/replug these things sometimes several times a day. Since i have four of these units, i spent an enormous amount of time walking around the house unplugging these when they go out. . Note i have followed all the guidelines for homeplug units - plug directly into the wall with no powerstrips or surge suppressors. Three of the units are on the same panel and the fourth is on a subpanel, but all units are equally unstable. . Worse still, it is beyond the online store return period. Avoid at all costs.

These worked well for about 2 months and then died over the course of a week. . Initially i loved the powerline system because it connected quickly and easily the first time i hit the buttons and the speed was solid. For two months i had no issues. . One day i found the two de-paired. I hit both buttons again and they re-connected and my net connection came back. This happened a couple more times over the following days, requiring more attempts each time. Eventually they refused to reconnect no matter how many times i attempted. I noticed that one of them is running quite hot as well. . For the record: i read the manual carefully. I followed every recommendation. I followed their troubleshooting guidelines. Still broken. . Two stars rather than 1 because while they worked i was satisfied.

I had high hopes for the tp-link. Maybe it's because the wiring in my house is so old. I purchase these to use for my second xbox one since my significant other and i started playing games together. After setting up the tp-link's i did some network tests and the wi-fi still out performed the tp links.

Works, but not well. 1. 2mbits/sec. . Our apartment is 1600 sqft and the linear feet between transponders/wall units/ is about 100 feet. The apartment has it's own electrical wiring and circuit breaker box in the apartment so there is no unusual power wiring that might effect the transmissions. . My speed tests are to my router and not to the internet. I wanted to test only the transponders. . Set up and use was a snap, nothing to configure, they just worked. Nice. . Propagation delay is 4ms to 10ms between transponders with no data load. And depending on data load, ie data being transferred it ranges between 30ms and 800ms. Average delay is 45ms or so with a small data load. . I tried different sockets in the far room, i tried turning the unit upside down, ie reverse the wall socket prongs. No difference noticed. . I wished they worked better for me, but i need a higher transfer rate than what i can get out of them. . I'm sorry to say that these will be going back.

Well the set up process was extremely easy and everything went very smooth. The next thing i did was run a speed test, this is where the disappointment begins. I had the computer hooked up with a usb wi-fi adapter prior to switching to this power line and was getting 150mbps to 200 mbps speeds, so when i ran this i expected more speed based on the description, however it did not happen i was only able to get 50 to 60mbps of download speed i tried updating firmware and did not see any difference. The router and pc are about 50 to 75 feet away in my home so distance is not the problem, i contacted tp-link and they were no help at all and were only giving useless advice that did nothing. . As a result i have returned this! . . I would not recommend it

Update: doesn't seem to be helping much anymore. So much for that. . Amazing. I bought a brand new expensive gaming laptop only to find it could not hold my wifi connection anywhere in the house aside from sitting right next to the router, which was obviously not acceptable. I was getting ready to just return the laptop when i found out about this, and decided to try it out as my last resort. Turns out these things worked perfectly and completely solved all of my issues. I was having over 200 ping, terrible lag spikes, and download speeds of 50kb/s and with these i'm now playing with 20 ping, no lag whatsoever, and reasonable download speeds. I haven't tested the unit's wifi capabilities and i play using the ethernet cable method. Be warned that the ethernet cables it comes with are very short so if you need the cable to travel a long ways please consider buying some longer cables along with this. These things saved my pc gaming experience. Just for the record, my router is on the first floor of my house, and i've been mostly using my laptop on the second floor on the complete opposite side of the house.

I originally purchased a set of this for my parent's house. They worked great! super-easy to set up, great bandwidth, stable connection. We recently moved to a new house that the wifi doesn't cover very well, so i knew exactly what i wanted to do - get a set of these and attach an old wireless router that i had left laying around. Setup was easy, just as i expected, but there seems to be a problem with these units. They stop talking to my network after a while. I downloaded the tp-link software that allows you to do some minor setup actions, but honestly it's pretty useless for diagnostic purposes, so i couldn't tell if the devices were un-pairing. I've tried assigning a static ip address to the device to see if it was being dropped from the network, but that didn't seem to work too well either, they would still stop functioning after a while. . I can't seem to pin down a reason as to why they aren't working, so i can't really fix blame on these as the culprit (all the same, they aren't working). I've started having issues with my router, so that may be the culprit and i have another one one order as a replacement. Once that's set up and i have the lan rebuilt i'll attempt to get these working again. I'll update the review again at that time.

Be careful if you purchase this product! what was not clear from the description is that both plugs must be connected to the same circuit in your home or office (with one being next to your actual router). Well - how many buildings use the same circuit for rooms that are far apart? and the only reason to use one of these devices is if the wifi signal is not consistent. That doesn't happen in the same room as the router!

C. Jackson, Wirral says

So i did a bunch of reviews before purchasing and found this one was highly recommended. I bought this looking to connect my xbox one that's upstairs to wired connection (because even with an access point upstairs, i was still getting bad connections, 100+ ping). Even on the box of this product it shows connecting on a lower portion of a house, and working on another floor. . I have one breaker box. If i connect the powerline adapter upstairs i get maybe 50mbps. Average is around 40. This seems to be working 'okay' for my gaming, but i'm still around a 70 ping. Which isn't the best but okay. . If i connect the powerline adapter in the same room as the other adapter, i get around 415mbps (not the advertised 600 on the box). But, why would i connect in the same room as my router is already here. . For a test i connected the second adapter on the same floor but just a couple rooms over and attempted to use my xbox one. In game i would receive 150+ ping. Speed test (if the device stayed connected) would give about 12mbps. From my pc with the software it would show a connection to the other device of less than 30mbps or would disconnect. In the same room i changed outlets to something a bit closer (maybe 5-7 feet) and received a 75mbps connection but would require me to run a 15ft (or longer) cable to my xbox, instead of being right next to my entertainment system. . For all of these tests. None of them were in a power adapter, all of them were direct to the wall connections.

I have used almost 10 year old netgear powerline products (up to 200mbps) and after getting a serious bump to my internet speed (125mbps) i figured that i'd retire the netgear units in favor of new technology. These tp units are much smaller and look great. They did actually increase my speeds a little (60mbps vs 45mbps on the old netgear), but i expected more. Delving into the product information a little more revealed the smoking gun. The actual hardware port (whether you plug in your ethernet cable) is still the same old 100mbps port! everything else in my connection is gigabit (1000mbps), and all cat6 ethernet cable. But the power line adapter's hardware is the bottleneck. If you need more than 60mbps then you need to buy something with a gigabit switch in the powerline unit. Update:. As another buyer pointed out, these things need to be unplugged every week or so as the connection drops. It's not the router or modem (all other connected devices work fine), it's definitely a loss in connection between these powerline devices. Support is non existent.

. Delgado, Stoke-on-Trent says

Just stopped working after about 14 months. Lights show that everything is working as it should but it no longer works on the outlets it was working on for the last 14 months to get an xbox 360 wired for use as a windows media center extender. I have been in technology for 20 years and there is only so much you can diagnose with these even with a lot of knowledge. I tried resetting, re-paring them and moving them to other locations. I can get them to work on the same outlet but as another reviewer stated it's only showing 11 mbps in the config utility. Something is just not right with these and i would avoid them. . Also note on the manufacturer website it states: "powerline adapters should be deployed on the same circuit and in set of two or more. ". . Well this will not work in most modern homes to get from room a to room b or a different floor as they are likely on different circuits. It will likely work if the cat 5 jack is just on the wrong side of the room and you are trying to extend it to another wall without wires. . Older homes with poor electrical layouts where 1 breaker shuts off most of the house will probably be fine.

. Morgan, Bromley

Unfortunately i had to return this as the bandwidth was terrible. I get 200+ mbps downstream through ethernet, and average 100 mbps over wifi in a 4000 sq ft house (furthest point from router i get between 60-100, depending on time of day and test). . I wanted to get full speed in my basement to set up home office, and found that with this i only got 30 mbps downstream with this device, worse than my wifi. I do know others that have found this useful, particularly in older houses where the walls completely block wifi signal, but it's really a flip of the coin. For me, not worth it.

I. Hannah, Georgia says

They're ok. Speed's not great and they stall once in a while. . Software is a little confusing. First tab is the device closest to you, second tab is the remote device. They worked better after i put the qos settings all to cap3 on the third tab. Fourth tab will do a reset and update firmware. Mine purchased 1-2015 came with the latest firmware. . Couple of complaints. 1. The default name of the units are device1 and it gives you an option to change. You name them and save and the next time you go back on they're back to default. . 2. When you close the software it pops up a dialog box asking if you want to close or minimize. You click the "don't ask me again" check box and click the close button and ok. Every time. It doesn't remember "don't ask me again" even though it gives you the option. Do yourself a favor and just click the close and ok button. You will save a precious mouse click every time you use this software. You just used 33 1/3 percent less mouse clicks. . In the end you do get ethernet over your power lines so i'm still using them for now.

V. Kelly, Vermont

Make sure these are all on the same circuit breaker circuit. If your router is on one home circuit/wiring/breaker (living room) that is different from the room you are connecting to (garage for example), your mbps will be very low (mine was only 2. 5mbps which was only slightly above the wifi rate). These were direct-to-wall socket and not through a power strip or surge protector and i followed all other directions exactly. I even swapped units, tried other cat5e cables, reset the modem, router, devices, etc. No luck. If you do a search you'll find the info from tp-link that says it must be on the same circuit which i'm guessing is the same for all of these devices. . I wish the description in the sale page had been more explicit about this fact. I'm sure the product works great for most applications, but check your home circuits prior to purchasing.

E. Sally, Nevada says

I used these in many places an never had a problem until recently. First the units work, then they seem to go out. To sync them by pushing the button on the front fails. They just keep blinking forever. Download the tl-pa4010 utility, reset them and set the network name . Tp-link tech support told me that does not matter, however i had the units in two locations in manhattan apartment buildings simply connect to the neighbors network with full access to all their shared files. To set a network name to lock them to their specific network seems prudent. . If you are lucky and the system works you can get good speed. If there is any interference on the local wiring . And there frequently is, they are a dead duck. If they connect at all the speed can be painstakingly slow where there is interference. So it is a trail an error. Certain devices on your electricity network can interrupt the signal. Ac or a fridge, big motors! . . Do not plug this into a surge protector, but straight into the wall or and extension cord. Might not work if you live in a unit with multiple fuse boxes . A scenario where your electrical wires are routed to different feeders.

F. Bertie, New Jersey

Bottom line: for someone who just needs to get ethernet to a room that's not easy to run a cable to, this will work, just do not expect lan cable speeds. The best i could get was a 1/3 of the bandwidth i can get on a 100mbit/s cable. That's okay if all you need it for is to get on the internet (that's still much faster than most home internet connections), and okay for light duty file and printer sharing. Not so good for streaming hd media from a nas. . I have no idea what kind of marketing mumbo jumbo that rated "500 mbit/s" is all about. I was hoping that maybe the actual signal was using a 500 mbit/s and that with normal line loss, i'd hopefully get close to 100 mbit/s. . Now i would be happy enough with getting 80 mbit/s but i didn't even get that. Plugging the two units into the wall as-is without encryption enabled (which would allow the maximum bandwidth since encryption always requires some bandwidth overhead) the most i got was 36 mbit/s. This was done by transferring a 1gb file and using windows 7's data transfer speed displayed in the file copy box (and every subsequent test i copied a different file in order to avoid windows caching). With a hardline cat5 lan cable, i get 98 mbit/s. . I was trying to use this to replace a hardline going out to my patio where i have a large screen tv and a media center pc. Since it's difficult to run a cable out there, i currently have the cable running across the floor, and crossing a door threshold, which looks real ugly (wood floors so i can't hide it). . 36 mbit/s is not adequate for my needs. I stream 1080p video files from my nas and file server, and watch hd tv recordings made on that media center pc, on other pcs in the house. . Now i realize that distance & whether you are on the same power "leg" makes a difference with these powerline ethernet kits. Homes here in the u. S. Usually have two 110 volt feeds into the house, and half the breakers are on one feed, and half on the other. Powerline network adapters have always had trouble "jumping" between the legs and lose bandwidth through this and because the crossover point between breakers are all back at the breaker panel. I tried several combinations of outlets and assured myself that in some of the combinations i tried, both outlets were on the same leg. That didn't help. Matter of fact, the only way i got anything faster than 36 mbit/s was by plugging both units into two different outlets in the same room (on two different walls about 14 feet apart), guaranteeing that they were both on the same breaker. I actually got 90mbit/s but this pretty much defeats the purpose. . So when is one of these powerline devices actually going to give us 100 mbit/s? . . Sigh.

. Valencia, Arkansas says

I've owned my house for 5 years, maybe twice in that time did a circuit breaker blow. But once these were installed i had 6 different circuit breaker trips. After some online research it seems certain circuit breakers are very sensitive to this ( especially if you are crossing circuits and its afci's style). You are not supposed to cross circuits or you take a performance hit. But in my case you have random circuits trip ( the ones that tripped were not even connected to the one's with the powerline adapters. So this made it very frustrating to find the cause. . Sad to say i can't use these and this problem was not mentioned anywhere until a specific google search was done. . Just to be clear, these aren't causing an overload (short or otherwise). It has something to do with how high tech the circuit breakers are and they see the change in what these powerline adapters do especially when crossing circuits. . Also to be clear, nothing else changed in my home (no new items were plugged into either one of the circuits that randomely were tripping). So the only explanation were these units. . I was getting 15mbps when installed, of course this is when crossing circuits. But what is the point of having these when you are trying to create a home network without having to run cat 5 in odd places.

I bought this smaller and nice looking pair to replace older zyxel devices. The speed it shows in the utility is between 11mbits/s and 110 mbits/s - it depends on many factors - distances and direct line, etc. In reality it is faster than my old devices, but occasionally the traffic stalls for a few seconds from time to time, even when there is an active transfer going on. . The utility for mac does not work as expected:. 1. Firmware upgrade shows it has completed successfully, but the report after the devices reboot shows the same fw version as before the upgrade attempt. 2. Setting network name is not straight forward process as i expected and it is not working in most of the attempts - it reverts to the default network name in most of the cases. . Funny thing is my old zyxel devices have a utility, which works all the time and it is only for a pair f devices. It does not look like a very hard job to write decent software to control a couple of simple devices like that (even 5-6 or more). Being in the industry and considering the complexity of the set i find it hard to believe that even a college student would not be able to make the utility better than the "professionals" in tp-link. . Wake up guys and make a better software. I know the hardware is cheap, but it is worth even less with crappy software.

First this is super easy to use and set up. It suits my need. A stable connection while i work, but it is slow. When plugged into this my internet goes from up to 100 to 2-3. I think if you need it to be fast you need to buy the greater than 600 version. I recommend for stability but do not recommend at all for speed. . Also please note this comes with cables you don t need to buy separate ones. I didn t check closely enough but i guess it s not bad to have. . No longer works consistently. I have switched back to wifi wasted money.

I've used tp-link's ethernet adapters before as this is the only way to get a reliable network connection in my apartment. I recently upgraded my internet speed (from 100 to 200mbps) and so i needed a faster adapter (my old adapters were rated at 100mbps), and went with tp-link to ensure the new devices would play nice with my old ones. . Seeing as these are advertised as being able to achieve data rates of 500mbps, and the adapter itself says plainly "500 mbps" right on it, i thought that would do the trick. However, now that i have gotten them home i've found that tp-link is outright lying about the device. It is not capable of reaching 500mbps. These adapters are strictly limited to a 100mbps connection because of the cheap ethernet port they ship with, and therefore entirely incapable of delivering speeds that are faster than this. . This is not a 5000mbps device, despite tp-link's intentionally misleading naming scheme and the provided information on this page and on the device itself. There is no benefit to buying these overpriced adapters when a cheaper adapter will give you the exact same connection speed (100mbps). I'm extremely disappointed in tp-link, a company whose products i previously had good experiences with. I will not be purchasing any future products from tp-link if they can't even be honest about what those products do when selling them to me. I would have gladly payed more for a device that actually performed at 500mbps, because now all i have done is waste my money. Now i'm stuck with an overpriced set of adapters that are exactly the same as the cheaper models i already had and provide no extra performance for the high cost. A total waste of money and time.

I put my ps3 on this initially. My mistake. It was only when i hooked this up to my pc that i learned how optimistic the claims for this device were. Obviously, after the return period. . The wireless adapter on my pc died, so i replaced it with the powerline. My setup seemed ideal: both adapters were on the same circuit, on dedicated wall outlets and separated by 30 feet-i have the house's wiring diagrams. I should get pretty good speeds from that. In practice speeds proved to be several times slower than my linksys 2500 and adapter had been. Wirelessly, i could stream video from one pc to the other. And why not? a 40 minute tv episode could be wirelessly transferred from pc to pc in well under ten minutes. Over the powerline a video of similar size takes about 50-55 minutes to transfer-so forget about playback during transfer. . I called tp link customer service. Not once did their rep or his supervisor take ownership of the problem. Both reps emphasized the product was only claimed to produce speeds "up to 500mbps" and any number of external factors could impede that without invalidating their claim. We did go through a checklist, and having eliminated every item on it came to the conclusion it must be something else. Yes, they were that specific. And just that helpful.

L. Irene, Barnet

I'm glad it works for some people but the speeds were just too slow for me to keep using this. I wanted to use this device to relocate my wifi access point. But the speeds were so bad that it was better leaving the wifi access point where it was. . I would have probably been happy with 100mbit which is 1/10th of a gigabit. Too much to ask? . . In the location i wanted to use this device, i was getting about 6mbit. Way too slow.

J. Edna, North Somerset says

This was recommended to me by the centurylink tech because he was too lazy to run a wire to my second floor. So i plug this into my modem/router combo and notice my modem is constantly rebooting. Unplug the ethernet cable from this device and suddenly modem works fine again. . I have a second repeater in my home so i plugged this device into the repeater, i dont get the constant reboots but once or twice a day, the repeater goes into error mode, but as soon as i unplug the ethernet cable from the repeater it works again. I suspect there is some kind of power surge from this device into the ethernet cables which is just scary as that has potential to harm the modem or router it's connected to. . It's been a little over a month with this device and now i'm getting packet loss to anything these are connected to. I spent hours troubleshooting to no avail, so i'm ready to give up and just run a 100ft ethernet cable instead of using this product! very frustrating and i'm outside my return window!

R. Glenda, Blackpool

I purchased this thinking it would be a great solution to my home office needs. I don't have an easy way to get an ethernet connection upstairs to my pc, and at first i thought this would be a great option. It is very simple to set up, and i had an internet connection right away. I was very happy with the ease of use. . After about a month of use, i have finally become too frustrated to use this any longer. I am finding a new solution, as this product just isn't cutting it for two main reasons:. . 1. Speed - my advertised speed is 50 mb/s down which i get when i connect this pc directly to my router. However, it's not in a convenient location so i can't connect the pc directly in my home office. Through wi-fi, i am getting speeds ranging from 45-60 mb/s on my acer c720 chromebook. Very pleased with the speed of my internet connection. With the tp-link powerline adapter, i max out at 20 mb/s. Often it ranges from 15-20 mb/s. While it is still decent, it is less than half of what i can get over wi-fi. I'm paying for 50 mb/s, so why should i be settling for half of that with this product? . . 2. Reliability - at first, the connection was good. No dropped connection issues. After a day or two, it would drop within the first hour of using my pc. This happened every single day like clockwork. Often the connection would come back after a minute of just leaving it alone. Other times, it would not come back and i would have to unplug and re-plug the adapter into the wall. No big deal if it happens every once in a while, but it's now happening a couple times (2-3) per day. Not ideal for a home office. . I have tried troubleshooting as well (re-pairing the devices, changing outlets, etc. ) but i'm still seeing the same speed and reliability issues. Perhaps other users will not have these same issues, but for my purposes, this is not a usable product.

. Cassella, Swindon says

Amazingly simple to set up. Plug in ethernet, plug in adapter, hold button for 1 second, hold mating button 2 seconds and done. The reason for the terrible review is the av600 is rated for 600mbps. "provides users with stable, high-speed data transfer rates of up to 300 meters/1000 feet. ". . I purchased this over upgrading to an ac wifi setup because both can handle my internet signal (450mbps), but the powerline should have lower latency. However, immediately after setup, i discovered this product cannot handle anywhere near my internet speed and is slower than my older wireless n network. . I did a test to make sure it wasn't just my 10 year old copper wiring. I connected both adapters to a 14 gauge power strip which connects these adapters within an inch. This tested to 94 mbps (far from 600 mbps advertised). If i move this to an outlet 10 feet away, the speed drops to 80 mbps. Put simply, these are only capable of nearly 100 mbps not 600 mbps, and you must be in the same room and on the same line. It's a shame people are putting up screencaps of 70 mbps connections for a product rated nearly 10x that. I would never have bought this product if i knew 100 mbps was the peak, now i know why these are so cheap.

T. Yvette, Nottinghamshire

I doubt gigabit speeds are possible with powerline adapters. Too many variable in a home's wiring. So don't go thinking this is the same as a wired ethernet line. However, it's the next best thing considering the time and/ or money it would take to run new ethernet cable. This is a viable alternative. . I have a gigabit internet and manage about 100-120 mbps up/down (10mb/s) with this kit. I could be that both units would perform faster if they were on the same circuit, but that's not possible with my setup as i'm in another room on a totally different circuit. Which would be typical for 99% of users. . I'd say it's fast enough for my use, and probably yours as well.

O. April, Massachusetts says

Both of my adapters stopped working after about 8 months. Up till then they worked fine. After calling customer support at tp-link i was told that they would be replaced and i was put in touch with a different department that handles replacements. The procedure they use requires that i return the defective parts to them at my expense and then when they receive them they will send me replacements. The result: my home network is down for several weeks due to their poor procedures, plus i have to pay for shipping.

D. Bullock, New Mexico

I recently relocated my desktop computer, and the room it is in did not allow for and easy ethernet drop. These units were very easy to get set up. Unfortunately, the throughput speeds i got with these units are about 1/5th of the speed i was getting with a conventional ethernet connection. I have a 120 mbit internet connection, and i was getting a max of about 25 mbit with these units. These are ok for low bandwidth applications, but i use my desktop as a media server for the rest of the house and need to be able to move a lot of data quickly. In the end, i had to do it the hard way: drill holes and run regular cable to make everything work as i wanted it to. . Overall, i give them 3 stars. Yes, they technically work; but not at the advertised speeds. I'll find a use for them on something less demanding of data.
