Tripp Lite Right Angle Protection Tlp1208sat (Power Supplies Or Protection) 2732

Review for outlet surge protector power strip

Price was $35.00. I install home theater systems for a living. . I purchase these units for use with larger home theater setups (with multiple devices, such as game consoles, video streamers, bluray players, etc). For smaller systems i use the 6 port model (see below). . Here are the reasons i use these units:. 1) quality. I only use high quality products in customer installations. These units exude quality both in specs and looks. 2) protection. These surge protectors have a surge suppression rating of 3840 joules. That's a lot of protection; higher then most in-home surge protector bars. This means whatever is plugged into these (such as tv's and computers) will have a better chance of surviving then a lower rated surge bar. It's backed by a $500, 000 ultimate lifetime insurance. 3) noise filtration. This is a feature found only higher quality surge protectors. This feature prevents appliances (blenders, refrigerators, fans) from degrading your tv picture and sound quality when in use. It also helps prevent lock-ups and data errors on pcs and other high end components. This is a must. 4) heavy duty. Yeah, these aren't breaking, ever. Every surface is solid metal, painted black. They weigh about 5 pounds, which makes them feel solid. 5) easy. They plug in and work. No buttons. Plug in, your done. 6) amount of ports. 10 power ports. This unit is great if you have a lot of devices plugged into your tv (surround sound receiver, game consoles, video streamers, bluray players, etc). . To date, i have not had a single one of these products fail on me. If they ever do, i will update this review, with details. . Note: if you need a smaller surge protector then this 10 port, i recommend the following:. 2 outlet (1410 joule): tripp lite ultrablok isobar surge protector/suppressor 2 outlets, direct plug in, 1410 joules. 6 outlet (3340 joule): tripp lite avbar6 isobar metal rj11 coax 6 outlet 6-feet cord a/v surge protector. . I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and the price i paid. If you are looking for a larger, high quality surge protector, i highly recommend these. . I'm a very pleased, very impressed, and very satisfied customer. . Thanks tripp lite. We appreciate quality products at fair prices. Please keep it up! . . Please vote! . I hope this review gives you some insight and help with your choice, and a little knowledge from an unbiased owner. If so, please click on "yes" below this review to vote it as helpful. Thanks! . . Foreword

I purchased this tripp lite surge protector for our home theater set-up which consists of a tv, blu-ray player, xbox, a/v receiver, cable box, and wireless router. I haven't used tripp lite products in the past, i've mainly relied on whatever was cheapest at the "big box" store down the road. . As i've matured and added a few more components to our home theater, installing a quality surge protector was an obvious thing to do. Through my research i stumbled upon a website called "wirecutter" that had an article "the best surge protector" which is an extremely informative read. I recommend you look into it if you'd like to know some background information about surge protectors, or just want to find out why this tripp lite is the best on the market. . To me, the greatest advantage of this tripp lite is a feature that is not found on most surge protectors at this price point: in the event of a power surge, spike, or other electrical event in which this tripp lite can no longer protect your devices, it has an internal mechanism that will cease power delivery to your devices. . This tripp lite completely cuts off power to your devices which shows you immediately that the surge protector has sacrificed itself for your expensive electronics. Other surge protectors typically trigger a "problem" light on the surge protector (which is always tucked behind the tv or on the floor where you'd never see it) but continue powering your components even if it cannot protect them. This tripp lite makes it extremely obvious that the protector has done its job. . Regarding the item itself, i know that some people were complaining that the plugs are extremely snug (eg: hard to insert plugs into the outlets), i do not see this as a negative, as there is very little chance that the plugs could be accidentally removed from the surge protector. . Not only will it protect your devices, but you can rely on tripp lite in the event of surge protector damage, or even worse, damage of your electronics. Whether your system costs $100, $1000, or $150, 000, this one's got you covered! i'd say that $30 is a pretty reasonable investment, considering how much protection it offers. It does what it is supposed to do. I am a little concerned in the packaging of the product as it appeared to have been opened. There were the included cables still in plastic so i am not sure if this was box was just opened or it was a used product repackaged. The only other issue is that the polarized plugs really were difficult to plug in. I had to use the blade of a screwdriver to get them all the way flush into the surge protector on the standard size outlet side. No issues on the large outlets for the power adapters. -X. Susan

PROS
  • This is a huge improvement over what i had before. First of all, the power button is a bit recessed, making it harder for me to hit by accident. Second, it has lots of outlets which is way safer than daisy-chaining smaller power strips. Source: i'm the osha guy for my work site.
  • I ordered this due to the good reviews, and especially since the company seems to stand behind their warranty (compare comments on the tripp lite to equivalent belkin surge protectors). The item seems to be well-made, and so far works as advertised (although we've not had any storm-induced power outages/surges so it's difficult to tell for sure at this point). One watch-out, though - it's really not feasible to use this to connect 12 cords, since 8 of the outlets are so close together that even standard two- prong plugs won't fit in adjacent receptacles, let alone larger 3-prong plugs - don't even think about plug-in transformer-type plugs. The problem would be solved if the power strip were just a few inches longer, distributing the outlets over a slightly greater distance; hopefully tl could incorporate this in a future model.
CONS
  • Works fine. Plugs super hard to get into the surge protector. After calling tarzan, i was able to get all the plug in. Plug to outlet wall is at an angle which is a little weird.
  • I selected this for the joule rating, so for the outlet use it's good. I had my cable run through this protector as well but i found it was causing interference on two of my cable channels. I wasn't sure what it was at first, but when i bypassed the protector and went straight to the cable box the issue went away.
  • One of the outlets is blocked and the others require force to plug in. Disappointed, i expected more from tripp lite.

So far so good! after much research when we lost a big screen tv to a lightning strike, i selected this product and it has worked great! i live in florida where lightning is a constant factor but had never lost any electronics to a storm and then we had a strike hit out backyard. Everyone was okay but many electronics did not survive the blast and most were plugged into protectors at the time. . I learned that these surge protectors do go bad and, with time, can still pass excessive charges to your devices. Furthermore, i learned that with most of these protectors they are not always sufficient at protecting your devices despite their listed joules of protection and the "warranties" they offer are not good at all! . . The tripp lite warranty seems to be well reviewed but, more importantly, when this surge protector can no longer sufficiently protect you devices, it will die completely and won't pass any current through it. This is vital to me and is something i will pay attention to for years to come!

Click to see NoticeTripp Lite Right Angle Protection Tlp1208sat (Power Supplies Or Protection)"We had a flood at our office and the tripp lite surge protector was on the floor, so it grounded out and melted completely. But we have not had a single problem with any of the electrical devices that were plugged into it! so i bought another one to replace it and i'll never use any other brand. I only wish they came with shorter cords, as this is a lot of cord to keep under the desk. . But we learned a good lesson: try to mount your surge protector instead of leaving them on the floor! . . Update: we sent the picture of the melted protector to tripp lite to thank them for a great product. They responded that we were entitled to a new one under our warranty, and even though we hadn't asked for one and couldn't give them any information on the old one (we had tossed it during the flood cleanup) they sent a brand new one that arrived today! as i said, i'm never buying any other product. This is one company that really stands by its products. Thanks, tripp lite."

APC 11-Outlet Surge Protector 3020 Joules Phone, Network Ethernet Coaxial Protection, SurgeArrest Performance P11VNT3

This was purchased for the computer/network equipment. I purchased it because i was looking specifically for the coax protection and network protection. My sister recently had a surge come through the coax line and toast the modem, but strangely enough it also traveled through the network line and toasted the wireless router. . My main concern when purchasing this was the coax ports. I wasn't sure if it was going to be able to maximize my internet connection behind this surge protector. After hooking everything up and testing it all my worries subsided. This product allowed me to pass 40mbps through it reliably. The only downside is the network only supports 100mbps (although 1gbps might work).

Apc Protection Surgearrest Performance P11vnt3 (Power Supplies Or Protection) FAQ.

We really like how the power cord is attached on the side and that it swivels. That feature allows for easy installation in a tight spot. Also, we like how the electrical outlets are arranged. We were able to get more transformers and power cords plugged into it than the old one we replaced which was about the same size - but, had a poor arrangement of the electrical outlets. -Notice from . I took it apart and checked every nook to see how it works and if it is quality. . As expected apc delivered a great product inside and out. . Charged my phone and ipad pro 12. 9 with usb ports at more than acceptable speed. Also is capable of running a few tvs and computers without failing (although i was more surprised my breaker could handle that, lol)

Apc-protection-surgearrest-performance-p11vnt3-(power-supplies-or-protection) set picture

- Y. Denise9/24/2013 update - after sending a strong email to apc, i was informed that they would now pay my claim. So today i recieved my claim check and apc eventually did the right thing. . The apc surge protector doesn't protect. Apc denied claim. Stay away! . . On june 25th 2013, lightning struck right beside my home. It tripped the main breaker to the house. After getting the power back on, i noticed my electronic equipment that was properly connected to my apc surge protector wasn't working. I filed a claim, and sent in the surge protector as instructed. Apc denied the claim as they informed me the surge protector was fine, and showed no internal signs of damage, burning or indicators of power surge. . There are 2 schools of thought -. 1. Obviously it is ok, as it didn't "perform" as intended and allowed my equipment to be damaged. 2. Apc "checked" their own product, in their "own" lab. Apc said it showed "no internal signs of damage, burning or indicators of power surge", "no loose parts". There were loose parts, as i heard loose piece(s) inside surge protector while i was preparing it for shipment to apc facility. Apc indicated "no" on loose material section of test report, and that just isn't true. . I also filed a claim against belkin as well (for damaged equipment in 2nd room), and that was denied as well. . Surge protector companies like apc and belkin are lying to consumers, as their protectors don't protect and their so called "equipment protection policy" is a joke. My equipment was connected properly and simply wasn't protected. Thank you for providing a false sense of security while using apc/belkin products. I will no longer be using apc/belkin equipment, and sharing my thoughts with others. R. Adams

I have configured this into my network system to handle the new power load of growing iot devices. The usb are ideal to power and charge devices. The led indicator lights are beneficial in that they will inform you of wiring fault. The cord itself is very long and flexible, another reason why i really like the apc surge protectors. The wire pivots without moving the entire unit. Definitely recommend for network and entertainment use, especially heavy use.

This review is for the "tripp lite ht10dbs home theater isobar surge protector". . Overview:. -. . The ht10dbs is a well-reviewed, high quality value sweet spot among premium surge protectors. It offers ul 1449 3rd edition verified surge protection with decent emi/rfi ac line noise protection. . This is a premium av surge protector offering from a company that takes surge protection seriously. . New technical detail:. 03/2014 . -. . (1) emi/rf ac noise attenuation. . Although ht10dbs specs say 60db emi/rfi ac line noise attenuation, tripp lite engineering says that with current units the outlets closest to the power cord are 80db and those furthest away are 50db. So clearly we want components most likely to benefit from noise attenuation plugged into outlets closest to the power cord. . (2) more isolated filter banks. . Tripp lite engineering says that current units have 5 isolated filter banks, that each outlet pair is its own isolated filter bank like most of the isobar/isotel units. They said it used to be 3 and before that 2. . If these two technical details are accurate, it makes the ht10dbs more competitive with other models of the isobar/isotel line. It would now be an alternative to isobar/isotel for those who might just get it as an isobar/isotel with 10 outlets and greater spacing convenience, with the upgraded emi-rfi noise reduction being just icing on the cake. . Misc. Details:. -. . (1) ethernet line (rj45) surge protection is, like most rj45 consumer surge protection these days, not for gigabit speed ethernet, it is for up to 100baset. I confirmed with the company. . (2) the emi/rfi and noise attenuation is for the unit's ac outlets, not for the coaxial cable, tel/fax line, and ethernet line, they however get the surge protection, of course. Source: tripp lite engineering. . (3) if the outlet isn't grounded, surge protection won't work (however you would get the outlet emi/rfi and noise reduction). . (4) the on/off switch (which doubles as a circuit breaker) takes just enough force to make it a little more cat proof than some others. . What it has in common with. All isobar surge suppressors:. -. . The isobar/isotel line of surge protectors (ht10dbs is one of them) is technically respected, the line has been around over 20 years and they have sold almost 20 million of them. Even their plug receptacles are high quality. These are a great value. . Some key isobar/isotels benefits:. . (1) ul1449 3rd edition tested (see below for details) with let through 140v rms "clamping" voltage (ul verified at 330v). This means at 140v it starts passing the over voltage to electrical ground. If a surge protector doesn't have a clamping voltage at 330v or lower, consider looking for one that does if you are serious about surge protection. . (2) isolated filter banks. Some equipment send more noise than others back down their ac cords. The isolated filter banks eliminate interference between equipment in this regard. . As noted above, starting sometime in 2013/2014 the ht10dbs model of the isobar line now has five isolated filter banks (each outlet pair). Thus electrical noise from each outlet pair won't affect other outlet pairs. . For example, you might isolate equipment with motors like dvrs and dvd players from noise sensitive equipment like tv and speakers. . Note: i was told that versions older than sometime in 2013/2014 of the ht10dbs had only 2 (and i heard later 3) isolated filter banks and most of the marketing materials still reflect that, and their sales people and even some of their engineers may still refer to that old material. . (3) survivability, unlike many surge protectors this isn't designed to be a disposable product. Isobar surge protectors are designed to be highly survivable in addition to doing their job of protecting your equipment. And if it does sacrifice itself protecting your equipment there is a good chance the company will send you a new one at no cost. Comments on sites suggest they take their lifetime warranty and equipment protection guarantee seriously. There is circuit breaker (12a) built-in too, of course. . (4) emi/rfi filtering, the db attenuation level is model dependent. Although the ht10dbs model specs say it goes up to 60db noise attenuation (depends on frequency range), tripp lite engineering says it is up to 80db closest to the power cord and 50db furthest away. Again, this does not apply to the coax cable, tel/fax line (rj11), or ethernet (rj45) line, they get the surge protection, though, of course. . I don't know why the online specs are different than the understanding of tripp lite engineering. If i resolve anything i'll modify accordingly. . (5) a tough all metal housing, thus for example no melting plastic cases in extreme conditions. . (6) for over 20 years, the isobar line has committed to the technical high-road and showed product durability/survivability over the long haul and the company appears to make a good faith effort to honor their warranty. . Note: the rest of the benefit laundry list i won't cover as they are to be expected for any premium surge protector and there is nothing to clarify or add:. - expected status indicators. - high joules protection (ht10dbs has 3840). - thermal fusing to avoid fires, etc. - etc. . Ht10dbs specific benefits:. -. . Rewritten in 03/2014 to reflect spec changes . . At its core ht10dbs is a 10-outlet isobar/isotel surge protector with better outlet spacing than the 2-8 outlet models. . Like the other 10 outlet member of the isobar/isotel family, the avbar10, it adds surge protection for:. - coaxial cable (x3). - rj11 (fax/phone). - rj45 (computer network/ethernet - only up to 100baset, not gigabit). . So what does the ht10dbs have over its nearly identical twin of the isobar line, the avbar10? . . - the ht10dbs now has up to 80db emi/rfi noise protection/filtration (source: tripp lite engineering) for the outlets as opposed to avbar10's up to 40db. As noted earlier that is 80db closest to the power cord and it is down to 50db at the other end. Note that the online specs still say 60db max. , however tripp lite engineering says it is now 80db. . - ht10dbs has 3840 joule suppression rating vs. Avbar10's 3384. Some say this isn't significant, however i include it as some care. . - the new ht10dbs design now has 5 isolated filter banks (source: tripp lite engineering) vs. The 3 on the avbar10 (source: tripp lite engineering). Ht10dbs is the more premium product. . Ul1449 3rd edition - why demand it at. The minimum for your surge protector:. -. . Okay, so you read somewhere that you want a ul1449 verified/tested product and preferably a maximum of 330v let-through clamping voltage, 1 nanosecond response time, etc. , but what added value does ul1449 3rd edition give us? . . Ul1449 3rd edition became effective 09/2009. Any surge protection device (spd) made after that must meet the new tests to be ul1449 verified. Why choose a product that meets the new edition of the certification (much less meets any old ul1449 cert. ) if you are serious about protecting your equipment? here are two reasons:. . (1) it added a stress test for type 3 spds like this called the duty cycle test. They electrically whack it 15x to see if they can ruin its ability to protect, cause a fire, etc. . (2) the ul1449 3rd edition tests with 6x more surge amperage than the 2nd edition test did. . A ul listed product that claims to be a surge protector is not necessarily ul1449 3rd edition listed. For example, it may only be ul1283 listed (or one would hope rarely, even ul1449 2nd edition listed in the past and not following the rules for listing continuation). Don't mess around with cheap dollar store power boxes. Spend the money and get something nicer like this. You'll feel better knowing the quality is good and it wont catch on fire or something. . Its been working great, powering my tv, cable, wifi, router, xbox, and phone charger and laptop charger when those are plugged in. . The green light tells me the surge protection is still active. No need to worry in case of a fuse blowing and causing my apartment to go dark. . I can rest easy, and its wall mounted so i don't have to pick it up everytime i sweep or mop the floor. . Trust me, you'll find yourself resting easier with this or another similar product.

Best tripp lite right angle protection tlp1208sat (power supplies or protection) in review

I don't think i've ever had a power surge in my life, or at least i've never noticed one. I live in the san francisco bay area and the most i get are planned black outs 1-2 times a year and maybe 1-2 unplanned black outs a year. I think our power grid is pretty stable here. While i don't think i've ever had a surge and can't comment about that feature, i did use this device for 3. 5 months and it has been working awesomely. I have my computer (with an 800 watt power supply) hooked up to this thing (usually draws around 100-160 watts), 3 monitors, speakers, and several other things all hooked up to this and it deals with providing power to all the devices fine. I'm guessing i am drawing 250 to 300 watts or more power on a daily basis for 3. 5 months now. No issues. Will update as i continue using this. . I also don't use coax cables or landline phones anymore so i can't comment about those features either. I only use it to split my electrical outlets. . Also, the device has a flat power cord plug design that lines the cable parallel to the wall which i found handy. I've had so many power cords that would have stick out from the wall as the cable is perpendicular. The flat plug and cable design is awesome.

I was surprised to learn that surge protectors burn out. Yep, they can usually take a lot of little hits, but the hits add up and all of a sudden, the protection doesn't work anymore. So i decided to get new surge protectors as ours were pretty old. One of the comparison sites i checked out was thewirecutter(dot)com. As of 12/1/15, the tripp-lite surge protector tlp1008tel is their highest recommended surge protector. . To be upfront, thewirecutter tells you that it gets compensation when someone clicks on a seller link on their website (which i didn't do). They also highly recommend the ap surgearrest 3020j, the difference being that the surgearrest doesn't turn off when the surge protection no longer works. I guess it's a matter of whether you're going to see that a light went off or not. . This is a big protector. It will not fit in a small spot. It has a keyhole slot to hang it on the wall, but i'm using it on the floor. I think the size is a plus, though, because this means that four of the grounded outlets are spread far enough apart to allow for transformers. The surge protector's plug is at a right angle, which is a plus if it's plugged in behind furniture. And the 8-foot cord lets you run it easily behind a long couch. . If you've got young ones who might poke their fingers into things, each outlet has a safety cover which slides over it. . There are three lights on one end of the protector, and they are bright. The big middle light, a orange-red oval kind is the on-off switch. This is good for energy savings. Don't just shut down your computer and tv at the end of the day. They are still using electricity in the background. So for energy savings, you need to actually unplug them. It is easy to cut the power to more than one machine at a time, when they are plugged into a surge protector like this. Instead of unplugging each machine, you just hit the on/off switch on the protector. . A small red light on means that the outlet the surge protector is plugged into is grounded. A small green light means the surge suppressor is working. If this light goes out, you will supposedly be given a new tripp-lite, because it has a life-time guarantee. . Happy reader

I needed a power brick that had enough outlets for all of my equipment. It's a nice one and has the running lights to tell you when it's working. I had an old one from the same company that i've had for close to 20 years, it's old and yellowed but still works, but it just didn't have enough outlets on it. And from what i hear, this company stands behind it's product the best. Although i've never had any reason to contact them, because it's always worked for me.

. Walsh, Brighton and Hove says

Found a review on the internet that tested multiple type 3 surge arrestors, and this one came out on top as the top pick. Reasoning was that once the protection of this device has been exhausted, it will cease to provide power to your equipment, and thus needs to be replaced. Other surge protectors will continue to provide power to your equipment, but as an unprotected current. Also, tripp lite has an outstanding record of honoring their warranties and products. Bought four of these, and now that i know about this feature of this product, i would not even consider a alternate protector even if they were free. . Update:. Just bought another one for my exhaust hood for my stove. Wish tripplite could make a smaller version of this product with the same features as mentioned above.

P. Valdez, Shropshire

Its kinda tough to review a surge protector without it actually experiencing a surge. Its pretty much what you see in the picture as far as the layout. I was disappointed that it had phone jacks instead cat-whatevers, but that was my fault. But. I have to review tripp lite in general. Twice in 4 years i have had surges that were severe enough to destroy some protectors. I had multiple brands at first. In both cases, tripp lite stood behind their words and resolved my problem. No hassle. And quick. Because of this. After the first surge i had, i replaced all but one surge protector with their products. The one i didn't replace was because i paid like $55 for it, and it was also from a well known company and "guaranteed" for life. Funny thing is that when this one burned up as a result of the second surge i had, they gave me a hard time when i tried to get it replaced. Now its tripp lite only for me. By the way, the second surge i had was really bad. Fried outside motion lights, a stove control board, and several dimmer switches in my walls. Nothing that was plugged into the tripp lite protectors had a problem. So, 5 stars for the product, and the company.

I tried to do a lot of research before i purchased this particular isobar 10 outlet audio/video surge protector. I am using this as my primary protection for a high end computer, and associated modem, router, monitor, etc. The unit looks well built, and i have no reason to believe that it is not doing its job. I am not using the protection for the high speed cable connection or phone, but would like to do some research there as well. This unit feels like you could drop it from an airplane, and it would still work fine. In short, other then the external build quality, (and a lack of problems), i do not know if this unit is working well or not, but the other reviews seem to be very favorable. In over a years time, with brown outs, power outages, and surges, (watch the lights flicker), my computer equipment is still running fine. This is one of the few reviews where i am actually trusting the reflections of others. I have no desire to put one of these on the bench, get the scope out, and look to blow out a few movs, although that might be fun to do someday. I feel this is a great investment in your high end electronic equipment, and quite frankly, cheap insurance. A bad power spike will knock out sensitive equipment, (and not so sensitive equipment) faster than a heartbeat. This tripp lite isobar 10 is a great source of line protection.

S. Emma, Ealing

I emailed tripp-lite about this filtering issue being discussed, and they called me. . I nearly died. . They confirmed this is nearly identical to the avbar10 except for joule rating so whichever is cheaper, go nuts. . One star removed because:. -nobody needs all these coax plugs. I'd rather have only one input that splits to two outputs and have a supplied termination plug if one isn't used. -needs two pairs of ethernet ports so i can protect incoming wan and protect an outgoing lan port on a single router (to protect from transients incoming from another remote switch to device behind protector. -ethernet needs to support gigabit ethernet, no need for poe support or anything crazy, but come on it's 2014 and we have wifi faster than 100mb. . Other than it being dated, it's surviving powering my tv, receiver, sub, blu-ray player, and router.

M. Nielsen, British Columbia says

I purchased 3 of these; kept 2 and gave one as a present. So far, they have worked great and even if i don't experience any surges, the fact that all my electrical cords are consolidated onto this one unit makes my computer area and tv area so much neater. No hunting around for where different cords plug into electrical sockets. On advice from my internet cable company and my satellite tv company, i did not plug these coax cables into the unit. I like that this unit has a long electrical cord as i have both units sitting on top of tables, so no groveling on the floor to find a connection. Unlike a power strip, this unit also has special plugs for those large "transformer" plugs and using one (like an ac adapter) does not cover up an outlet. . I especially like the fact that there is a lifetime warranty with this product.

H. Wells, Rochdale

These surge protectors are great. Currently this is being use for a 4k tv setup in the basement with a few video devices plugged in as well. The 8 foot cored gives plenty of length for a setup that is far from the outlet. The only issue i have is that the power button is on the top and not the side. This makes it easy for a wander pet or child to hit the button, but it has only happened with other protectors and a previous pet. No stars off because i knew that going in and tripp lite makes a solid product, but it is worth mentioning if someone else doesn't think about it.

B. Moore, Washington says

This is a good surge protector. I would love to give it a higher star rating, but i am not overwhelmed by it's usability. The plugs that are closer together are not quite far enough apart for many common adapters to be placed side by side. I find that i am able to use about 10 of the ports without extension cords involved. . Perhaps this one gripe is more of a push for my needing a surge protector with built in extension cords, or maybe just having less items in my entertainment center area and moving all of my communication devices to another area.

D. Julia, North East Lincolnshire

I had to learn the hard way to protect my home from power surges. Hurricane irma laid waste to my apple macbook when the power went out, then surged during her passing through florida. This power strip detects proper outlet grounding and has a high rated mov (metal oxide varistor) which prevents power surges when they occur by becoming inactive, stopping the flow of electricity to your equipment. Indicator lights show that the outlet is grounded, and that the mov is working. If a surge occurs, the mov light goes out to show that power is not available through the strip, and it must be replaced. But, your equipment is protected.

L. Meghan, Luton says

So far i haven't had any problems with it. The outlets are a little stiff at first, but that's good; you don't want your cords falling out of it when you least expect it. Don't wanna tug on your console or something by accident and all of your hard work / hard play comes undone. I've never had a surge in my house so i've never had to test surge protection on it, but honestly i just wanted a lot of outlets for all of my videogame consoles and computer equipment on fewer outlets than i'd like. And as far as ratings from the internet and electricians and businesses, tripp-lite seems to have the best reputation for high quality electrical equipment. The extra length of cord allows me a bit of flexibility when using multiple outlets to spread it out a bit. I haven't needed to use the coaxial or phone ports on it, but for some strange reason those ones are cheaper than the ones without them.

J. Rose, Indiana says

First - yes, it is extremely hard to plug things into this surge protector initially. But, there is a way to fix this. The first time plugging anything into this surge protector is very difficult. But once this initial resistance is "broken", future plug ins are very easy! i would highly recommend (before using the surge protector) plugging the item's own 3 prong cord into each outlet until that initial plug resistance is broken. I found it easier to break the resistance by wiggling the plug side to side parallel to the long axis of the surge protector whilst pushing down. The connect is very tight and feels very secure even after this initial break in period. . The built in outlet safety covers are very handy and easy to use. They slide back and forth with a nice click at each position. These covers are so easy to use, that a child could operate them. . Also, included with the item are 2 cords/cables: 1 telephone cord and 1 cable tv/antennae cable. This, if anything, should encourage you to use the cable and telephone surge suppression features of this unit. . The power cord is of the right angle/low profile variety. It is quite long and pretty easy to bend into shape. . The construction seems nice, but it sure doesn't feel like a tripp lite isobar. But then again, it is prettier. . My only complaint so far is that 8 outlets along the one edge are very close together. So close that it is hard to place 2 usb/plug type adapters next to each other - such as an iphone charger/usb plug next to a ipad charger/usb plug. Anything bigger than a standard 3 prong cord might get a little tight. I suppose you could alternate a charger/plug next to a typical 3 prong plug.

T. Evelyn, Hillingdon

I like this power strip, because it cuts power to the attached devices if a power surge burns out the protection circuit. Most power strips will continue to function when the protection burns out, and you can only tell that it has failed by looking at a light on the power strip. I don't check those lights very often, so i wouldn't know that the power strip had failed. This tripp lite power strip avoids that problem. If the protection circuit is burned out, then all power is cut.

F. Watson, Darlington says

I bought this because it was the wirecutter's top pick for a surge protector its most useful feature is that it stops working when it can no longer guarantee protection. I haven't had much to complain about in the few months i've owned it. I like the sliding shutters for the sockets, i like the socket lay-out, i like the recessed on/off switch. I have noticed that some plugs (like the one on my mbp power adaptor) won't go in without a fight, but it's not a big deal. . My main issue with it is just that it's really ugly. The plastic looks and feels cheap and the bulbous rounded motif is really tacky and off-putting. It spends most of its time out of sight under my bed, so that's not a huge issue for me either. But the tlp1208 models look and feel much nicer, imo, and i believe they offer similar or better protection.

N. Hayward, Barnsley

I did some researching and found that your average surge protector from all the common brands have quite a high clamping voltage. From howstuffworks. Com; tom harris - voltage - this tells you what voltage will cause the movs to conduct electricity to the ground line. A lower clamping voltage indicates better protection. . All those $30-$50 belkin surge protectors - basically the majority of the plastic housing protectors have clamping voltages of nearly double this unit - 250-500v. This unit has a 140v clamping voltage. The higher 300-500 voltages can easily destroy more sensitive electronics. . As i understand it, these also offer better filtration with separated outlets/banks and have better circuit breakers which could potentially allow the unit to be reused after a strike - other units are often unusable after a surge. Correct me if i'm wrong. . The exterior is an all metal housing. You can't get a better combo of quality and protection for the cost offered by online store. These are definitely worth the added premium. I replaced my home theater surge with the ht10dbs and all my others with their isobar8ultras. I have not tested the cable or telephone protector ports as many have claimed quality degradation - i can neither confirm nor deny their results. . With all of these expensive electronics nowadays - why not spend a little extra to protect your investments and avoid the hassle of having to go through any sort of replacement/insurance through the surge protection plans. . Note: as another helped me with stating in their review - get this one vs. The avbar10 - the normally more expensive ht10dbs costs less on online store and offers better filtration.

. Dorothy, Leeds says

it works very well. . Got 9 things plugged in, and a second breaker with 6 more outlets. Ends of 4 large cords fit side by side! . . Surge protectors saved 2 computers from being destroyed when some maintenance men goofed up the electric wiring in my previous residence. (you must understand, read english on english written electric, chemical. Devices, product directions. ) they did not. Caused a fire in my wall, power surge 2x into living room. . (only used this one day so far. So; read other reviews also. If it does not work as it should if we get a power surge; i will change the review. But for now, it seems to be functioning correct. )

O. Fabian, Midi-Pyrenees

Although i did purchase this item a while back, i understood that some time had to go by before actually entering a review. The point of my buying this was to protect my gaming setup which is composed of a 39inch flat screen, xbox 360, xbox one, vizio sound stand, and finally a dvd player. For some odd reason, we have been suffering some random power outages so i felt the need to protect my investments. So far i have no complaints at all. After roughly 10 to 15 power outages all my devices still work perfectly and the surge protector has not suffered any damage. I do recommend you register your purchase with tripp since they do offer a type of insurance/ warranty. Again all my devices have been protected and nothing has stopped working but taking into account the all the money that i have spent i believe it is better to be safe than sorry. The surge protector is not heavy, but it is a bit on the bulky side so unless you plan to screw it on the wall make sure you place it in a safe place away from either water of any child.

Bought about a year ago. Dec. 2014. Great product! looks like quality construction and outlets spaced far enough apart for block plugs. Everything goes through this including blue ray player, tv, cable box, sound bar, amplifier, and router/modem. After hooking up all my equipment to it i believe my tv pic is slightly clearer on what already looked picture perfect. The only drawback may be watching "the walking dead" as they may enter your living room space! getting one of these for my new son-in-law for christmas next year! a very practical thoughtful and money saving idea! will never buy znythjng but tripp lite iso bars!

V. Mahood, Delaware

Update: one of these works pretty well, the other one, ugh! only three of the eight outlets work. The other five i am unable to plug anything into five of them! you need a sledgehammer! my fiancee' is a big guy and he could not get a simple, two pronged plug for a lamp to plug into any of the other outlets! sending back! great surge protector. I just received and installed them, however, they seem to be of good quality. Verizon totally screwed up my fios install (shocker). Their tech didn't know what he was doing (shocker again). My electrical outlet was not properly grounded and only accepted two-pronged plugs. The nimrod cut the grounding plug off of a cheap-ass, no name power strip and plugged it in and connected the huge plug for the back-up battery to it. Over time, we experienced several outages (almost weekly) and the strip started making a weird noise. That is when i noticed the lights on the backup battery did not say "grounded" or "protected" i purchased the tripp lite to see if they worked better. I had to purchase a little, grey gfci adaptor and screw it into the socket to ground that outlet, and accept three pronged plugs, but it worked and the tripp lite says "grounded and protected". I feel much safer with this than the pos verizon jerry rigged and left me with. This one also has input jacks for phone lines and tv connections.

I installed this product on my home theater system with simple satellite coaxial connection. Cable in cable out. . I am very knowledgeable of protection. I love this product for the following reasons. Number one they have a lifetime warranty. A lot of point-of-use surge protection products do not offer a lifetime warranty, as a matter of fact they typically carry a2 to 5 year warranty. . Second reason they are ul-listed. They have a wide variety of point of use protectors to choose from for residential application. Ul listing is incredibly important when it comes to surge protection. . Third reason tripp lite does not discriminate against lightning. Read the fine print on many of your point-of-use protectors and you will see a disclaimer excluding lightning. Tripp lite warranties their product if they see any damage within their point-of-use plug they are very good about honoring their warranty. . Fourth reason from my personal experience dealing with the warranty department has been pretty decent. . My final opinion about surge protection and point-of-use. Make sure that everything connected from an outside source to whatever it is you are protecting is covered. Right plug right place. Make sure that the plug you are purchasing is rated for the item you are plugging it into right plug right place. Do not daisy chain, this means do not plug a surge protector into another surge protector or an extension cord into a surge protector. . Please do not ask me specific questions about your specific electronics i am just stating what i know about surge protection point-of-use i do not work for tripplite nor do i keep a database of every surge protection device on the market. This review was just a simple review with some sound advice for anyone looking for surge protection.

. Broyles, Bexley

Very heavy duty. Moved into an older house, and the power tends to have its moments of surges. Lol. Not to mention storms, lightning, etc. I bought a $30 surge protector at walmart, plugged it in, then the vacuum, and the protector blew. The vacuum was fine, but protector blew. So, i decided to look online and this one seems very heavy duty and ready to take on all the things i can plug into it. I am going to try my treadmill out on it to test it, lol. Right now it is handling a computer, monitor, etc. Just fine. Very nice.

. Pete, Staffordshire says

Works perfectly and solved a strange long lasting issue i've been having. I was having strange interference issues between my receiver and antenna for tv. The antenna signal would get lost when the receiver was on and the hdmi arc functionality between the tv and receiver would stop working with the antenna plugged in. I ran the antenna to the surge protector then ran the supplied coax to the tv and now have working hdmi arc and perfect picture. I'm pretty sure there's a wizard living inside this thing that just make things work that are plugged into it.

E. Williams, Kansas

I loved the product but am disappointed a little as one part of the powerstrip have the sockets placed very close to each other which eventually led me to skip every alternate socket when plugging my devices. The issue may not be sole responsibility of the tripp lite. Rather, i would blame the device manufacturers for creating varied size plugs. I haven't had any issues with this device since i bought it. If you don't mind the super close arrangement of 8 sockets, i would recommend this product.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

Wish i had checked the ethernet speed before ordering as it only supports 10/100 speed, not gigabit. Hard to find these these days that do not support gigabit. Otherwise the rest of the surge protector seems to be high quality.

K. Sheila, New Mexico

I initially bought this to protect my audio and tv systems. It seemed to work well for a while, although i never had a surge to protect against. Then, after about 8 months, it started emitting a high pitched electric whine. This is not what you want to hear feeding into your upscale audio system! i contacted tech support several times. On the phone, they told me that it is supposed to do that. Via email, over several days, they keep asking repetitive questions. Its been several days, and they have not committed to honoring their warranty yet. I finally bought a belkin that is half the price, seems to do the same things, has sockets that pivot, and does not emit any noise. Very dissapointed in the lack of support from this company.

I have added several components to my entertainment system and needed a surge protector with more outlets. The fact that this has 12 outlets is pretty amazing and fortunately gives me more than enough space to power all my devices. . The biggest reason i am giving this product 3 stars is because the outlets themselves are really tight and it is difficult to get plug into some of them. Some outlets are fine and the plugs can be placed easily, but 4 of them are quite difficult to plug into. I can swap a plug from one to another and have verified that 4 of them are tighter fitting than normal. Perhaps it is just my unit, but i do not want to hassle with returning it for a replacement since it was just shipped in a bubble padded envelope.

I love that tripp lite had wide sections to plug bulky items. The down fall i experienced with this surge protector is that i could not plug in all my devices! me and my husband had tried forcing the plugs in and it just did not work. I was not very happy about that.

C. Anonymous, Bury says

Half of the outlets don't work. Every time i plug something in i have to test each outlet to see if i can even insert the plug. I was better off with a 6 outlet.

D. Edith, Bayern

Half of the outlets work great. The other half simply do not allow the plug to be inserted. The covers are off and the outlet is open but the alignment of the contacts inside seem to be off. It's likely i simply received a defective unit based on the many positive reviews.

H. Melissa, Victoria says

Surge protector ceased to function after a light burned out in a lamp plugged into it. Replacement came damaged and bent with the box mangled. The replacement's replacement works so far but is not much in use due to having to get a different item to use.

R. Pearce, Haringey

I intended to use this unit on a new home theather set with with plasma vt and several components. I ended up returning this unit and getting a more robust panamax line conditioner. However, i have used a number of tripp lite products in the past and have always been happy with them. I do hear of people having difficulty making loss claims with tripp lite.

N. Meyer, North Lincolnshire says

The unit i received was difficult to plug items into it, but since i had to run the extension through a desk i had to force the plugs into it to make it work properly.

After about 5 weeks this surge protector started making a clicking sound. Now, i cut the power when i'm not around. R started

Udpate: 3/9/2018. See below for all of the details regarding this, but i am going to take away one star rating for every year this product remains on the market. There is no way that in 2018 it is acceptable for a network surge protector to only allow for 100 mbps bandwidth throughput. . Update: 10/7/2016. Updated to remove one star and add another con. The ethernet surge protection, labeled as "high speed internet protection" only allows throughput of 10/100 mbps. I found this out because my provider recently upgraded my connection to 150 mbps. However, i was unable to achieve anything higher than the low 90s. I started checking all of the components of my network until i finally stumbled upon this surge protector in my entertainment center. Once i removed this from the network and connected my modem directly to the router, my speed jumped to over 160 mbps. The reason i am lowering my rating is that they are still selling this product without having upgraded for what is currently considered high speed internet. Gigabit ethernet ports should be the minimum, and with fiber optic connections to the home (google, at&t u-verse, verizon fios), even gigabit may be too slow soon. . Compared to so many surge protector/power strips these days this product feels very solid. It is not built out of plastic like so many competitors. . Pros:. 1) solid construction. 2) three sets of coaxial cable surge protectors. Enough can not be said about this feature. With so many people having satellite, which has at least two sets, and sometimes cable also for local channels, internet, phone, or all of the above, this is exactly what is needed. I got so tired of looking for surge protectors that only had protection for one coaxial cable. 3) ethernet and phone protection. 4) long power cable. 5) plenty of outlets all facing toward the side so that you can fit power blocks. . Cons:. 1) labels are a little cheesy and can fall off easily. This doesn't bother me because i don't need them anyway. However, i wanted to mention it since it might matter to some. 2) ethernet surge protectors are 10/100, so if you use them for high speed internet, you will artificially slow down your internet speed.

G. Guest, Redcar and Cleveland

Initially i was pleased with the product. However in less than a month it has now stopped working. The surge protector is connected to an outlet and theres a light that indicated its getting power. However none of the products that i connect will turn on.

P. Paula, Rhone-Alpes says

Can only use about half the available outlets because the layout doesn't allow for flexibility with plug orientation. I also purchased the tripp lite 10 outlet surge protector power strip tel/modem 8ft cord 2395 joules (tlp1008tel) and found it to be much more useful than this model.

2 starts because the coaxial does not work. It interrupts the signal for both my cable tv and cable internet. The included coaxial cable is also of low quality it seems. Using the included coax, my internet signal refused to connect at all. When i switched to one provided by the cable company, the signal would come in intermittently. Tv signal refused to come in through either cable. A good surge protector should not interfere with the signal. It should simply be connecting it to ground with a "regulator" that should only redirect any surge current to ground when there is an actual surge. The outlets seem to work fine.

W. Lisa, Lincolnshire says

Let me first start off by saying that i am a lead (leed) troubleshooting field technician for the most cutting edge cable company is the u. S. Don't ever plug your cable coax line or satellite into a surge strip or any other kind of strip that claims to clean up the signal. You don't know how many missing or freezing channel problems i fixed just by bypassing the surge strip with the coax cable. Your cable or satellite service is grounded outside on the side of your house, where a lightening strike would occur, and ours is also grounded up on the poles. So theres no need to ground it inside. . Every company uses a different set of frequencies for their channels. And even different channels are on different frequencies. A lot of these surge protectors filter out some of these frequencies and there's no way of knowing unless you know all the frequencies your cable/satellite company uses for tv channels, and what frequencies the surge strip filters out. Keep in mind, you should most definitely plug the cable/satellite box's power cord into a surge protector, just don't connect the cable wire from the wall to the strip and then to the cable box. . Secondly, if you own a gigabit router, don't plug it in the rj-45 (ethernet) ports on a strip either. These ports are only 10/100 (megabit), not 10/100/1000 (gigabit). This will make the fastest part of your router, the hardwired lines, dramatically slower. . These companies are betting on the general public's ignorance about these things and trying to pass them off as features, while instead they'll end up hindering the very expensive services you pay for. Just use the surge protectors for power plugs only. . Last but not least. I own this unit. Either i have very clean power in my 40 year old house, or this doesn't clean out any electrical noise whatsoever. Because i see hdtv's day in & day out and i notice absolutely no difference between this unit and the regular, older monster brand, surge-only unit i switched from. My older unit didn't "filter out electrical noise" like this one claims to. Yet they look the same on the tv. . One very good thing this unit has going for it is it's a solidly built metal unit, and it's very nice looking as well. But if that doesn't matter to you, there's a belkin unit sold here on online store (model bp112230-08) that has a higher surge suppression rating than this unit and the belkin has 12 outlets instead of this ones ten outlets. Not to mention the belkin is half the price. Keep in mind the belkin is just a straight surge protector, no "line or noise filtering. " i own them both and of course i prefer the look and build of the metal tripplite over the plastic belkin. But what it really comes down to is what it can do for you and how much you want to spend. . So that's my advice, make of it what you will. You can't go wrong with either unit, but as for the noise filtering features of the tripplite. I don't buy it. More of a marketing gimmick in my opinion unless you have major electrical problems in your place. In that case you should be calling an electrician. And remember what i said about not plugging certain wires into the unit. You pay a lot for those services. There's no reason to let a simple surge protector hold them back from their full potential. . Also, make sure all of your coax cable fittings (connections) are wrench tight. A good rule of thumb is to tighten them as much as you can with your fingers, then do a quarter turn tighter with a wrench. Use rg-6 shielded coax cable, not the skinny, dollar store rg-59 cable, and make sure all of your splitters are digital. Technology moves fast. You gotta keep up or get left behind. . Happy holidays (written in december)

I had purchased this on sept 25 2014, and have experienced the high pitch buzzing sound since day 1. People have mentioned but only thought that was part of the operation. Only now i have just read that others do not have the sound coming out of theirs so i think mine was defective. Today is jan 25th and after a year and 4 months it went out on me. I have pressed reset but it took 10 minutes before it would work. I have a ps4 with the attached camera, xbox one attached with an external hard drive and kinect, a yamaha tsr 6750 reciever putting out sound to 7 speakers sans subwoofer, gigabit switch, laptop with external hard drive, apiga ap2 steering wheel and dyson fan. None of my breakers went off and am curious. I was chilling listening to boiler room mixes on youtube when everything turned off. The tripplite was warm near the bottom of the unit but its sitting on glass in my open console

Seems a bit larger than it needs to be, but construction quality seems to be good. I'll tell you after the next lightning strike here whether it really works or not.

. Harrison, Southend-on-Sea

I probably would not buy this again. After reading professional reviews, and the fine print, this device lets power through after the protection fails! granted, this is a premium protector, with heavy duty protection components. I have an old 4 port isobar that has been in constant use for nearly 20 years. The chances of the protection circuit failing is pretty low. However, apc promises to never let power reach your equipment if the circuits fail. I thought buying a more expensive protector, in a metal housing, meant better protection. I fell for the marketing hype.

All eight of the regular grounded outlets on my item were either defective, or poorly designed/manufactured. I was unable to plug any cord into any of them, even with the use of excessive force. I can see no visible cause, but after repeated attempts, i have given up. There is also no provision made for plugs with unique shapes, that cannot be orientated correctly with the outlet. All in all, i consider this a waste of my money.

A. Cageen, Swindon

Not a bad product, but the cable connections are delicate and if your cable is heavy duty or stiff to the point you need to use a wrench lightly on these they may spin loose on you. An interior inspection by removing the end reveals cheap connectors. Be cautious on tightening your cable connections.

B. Wayt, Kansas says

Bought 3 units:. . 1) 1-line network (100baset, high-speed) network connection does not work with fiber to the home. They need to update this product to leading edge technology. . 2) two of the units buzz oh so slightly which is annoying. . I contacted customer service and they seemed annoyed that i had called. Seemed like they were more focused on keeping their closed service ticket ratios up instead of helping.

Tripp lite is a great name in the industry, but this simply is below par for a good name company. 1/2 of the outlets are a real struggle to plug stuff into. The prong holes down like up with the plastic housing. I'm quite disappointed in this product, but it does work.

Q. Patton, Blackburn with Darwen says

A few outlet slots are very difficult to plug in and therefore i can not use. They need to do a quality test before shipping these to consumers.

S. Gloria, Champagne-Ardenne

I have an extremely hard time plugging things into this protector. All the outlets on the one i received are extremely tight and requires almost dangerous force to plug in. I ended up bending a plug trying to get it in and now i can't remove it and fearing a fire hazard i've just stopped using the protector. Very disappointed.

. Marguerite, Sunderland says

The product works as expected but some of the sockets are extremely tight and the plug actually doesn t fit.

. Gladys, Oxfordshire

The coaxial cable connection is useless: the signal becomes too weak when routed through the surge protector, and with an hdtv a number of channels become unwatchable or have no reception. I tried with several different coaxial cables (including the flimsy one that came with the surge protector), and it just does not work with a coaxial cable. (of course, once one connects the hdtv directly without the surge protector, everything is fine again. ). . Moreover, the entire device is quite poorly made: cheap plastic that comes apart easily. It is most definitely not worth its price: one can buy the same level of protection for almost have the price. (don't fall for the promised monetary compensation: no brand of surge protectors has ever paid that sort of money to any customer, no matter what. They always find a way to claim that the problem was not the surge protector. ). . Tripp lite does make a line of excellent surge protectors: the isobar models, which are highly recommendable. But their regular surge protectors are cheaply made, grossly overpriced chunks of plastic.

I bought this to use with my secondary computer drives and several audio units, and am considering returning it. It has several problems that i don't think warrant spending almost $90 on it, i could get a second ups tower for this price. The first problem i noticed is it makes a noticeable hum or buzzing noise after i plugged everything in but before i even started the computer. Second is the six wider spaced outlets are too close together at the top to connect six standard power bricks (i'm using them for external hard drives). That's one of the reasons i bought this unit was to be able to connect multiple power bricks. The third problem is it does not work with my high speed cox cable. The ethernet port works, however the coax does not.

L. Whiteman, City of London

I think it took about half an hour to push my plugs into the outlets (using a lot of strength) and i still wasn't able to use all the outlets since i didn't have the strength/energy to do the remaining ones. My arms were sore the next day from trying to get various plugs into the outlets. I have never in my life had a surge protector that was so difficult to insert plugs into. My advice is to get more outlets then you need so that the ones that are really hard to use, can just be ignored (saving you a considerable amount of time - otherwise it might take half an hour to insert all the plugs in).

First, i love tripp lite's warranty and customer service; it's the only brand i buy anymore because if the product ever fails, tripp lite will replace it. . This model has great features and reliability with one exception: the ethernet ports are so slow that they are unusable. My thought was to use this model to protect my streaming media box (example: online store fire tv) from a power surge through the ethernet wiring. The result was constant buffering. The surge protection appears to result in unusable streaming performance issues. . I contacted tripp lite support and here is part of the response i received: "most (but not all) current internet and cable service providers don't usually support surge suppressors in line with their data line connections. The reason is because going through a surge protector can cause response time issues (ping) and can cause load times and time outs when attempting to stream. At times when speeds get too fast outside of the support, the unit will usually lose packets and this will cause loading issues of any page. ". . I used the coax ports for a roof-mounted antenna without any issues.
