Review for atsc digital tv converter box

Price was $34.99. I bought it to use with my xfinity cable but had to return because it does not work with any cable providers. Possibly because the signals are encrypted. It was working with over the air antenna. They sent me a mail after i had received the product which said that it won't work with cable but they should also put this information somewhere in the online store website's product description.

Preamble

We purchased this for the fact that it would record live tv on the usb stick. We love it! now we don't have to miss a show if we aren't home. It does hiccup once in a while and seem to get out of sync with the audio, but restarting it seems to fix it. Other than that, no complaints. Viewtv at-163 atsc digital tv converter box and media player Review (at 163)

Update- 25 august, 2015 i've relocated to northern illinois, the box just keeps working, and it has proven to still have a better tuner than my tv. . Update- 13 may, 2015 still working without issue. . Update- 23 may, 2014 i am still satisfied with the box. It is still running without significant issue. I give it a double-plus-good rating. . Update- 29 january 2014 the box has been running everyday, recording about 6 shows a week, and a fair amount of time-shifting too. It is sitting on top of a satellite receiver which is warm on its own. The box is still working without issue. . If you decided to buy this- read my review first anyway, i promise i have covered many details that are not in the manual. Details that will drive you nuts until you figure them out on your own. . For the price this is a remarkable little box. Overall everything is simple enough that you can unbox it, hook it up, and have it running in a few minutes without the manual- which is actually good because the manual does not have any set-up instructions. On page 8 there is a wire connection diagram- some people may find this useful but most will probably find it more confusing than helpful. . The remote is basic, and barely meets the requirements. Some keys are marked with icons we are familiar with, others lack those icons, namely the play, pause, and stop keys. The keys are labeled clearly, they are just missing the familiar icons. The remote is a fairly narrow beam ir, so you can't expect the same performance as some of the high-power broad angle ir remotes (like directv) or the be-anywhere performance of an rf remote. Just have a clear line of site within 25 feet and 30 degrees. The box has independent hardware keys for power, menu, ok, vol -/+ and channel -/+. The box also has a display that shows channel numbers- however these are the numbers of the memory positions that the box has stored the scanned channels into- these are not the actual broadcast station numbers. . (added 29 january 14) i have replaced the remote with a "learning" universal remote. By "learning" i mean the kind that you use the source remote to teach the universal remote what to do when you push the keys. You can program any key function into any key- which makes using this box a lot better. The universal works so much better, i can't emphasize it strongly enough. The original remote really started to annoy me. (added 23 may 14) some people have asked about "universal" remotes. Most "universals" get programmed by telling the remote a code that allows the remote to "emulate" the original manufacturer remote. Unfortunately i haven't found any "universals" with a viewtv code. I've heard that a certain high dollar brand might work- but i'm not trying to spend twice as much (or more)on the remote than i did on the box! . . Over-the-air broadcast viewing works as expected. The digital ota(over-the-air) tuner is slightly more sensitive than the tuner in my tv. (added 23 may 14) that means that at my house with an amplified rooftop antenna pointed directly to the broadcast antenna location i get a few more channels on the box than i do with the antenna connected directly to the tv. Ota reception has a lot of variables. I live less than 10 miles from the broadcast site, but i am in a terrain shadow (i am behind some big hills. ) the key point i can make is that this box tunes all of the broadcast stations available in the area- my expensive tv's tuner doesn't do that. . The video quality is every bit as good as i could expect. Using hdmi connection looks as good as expected, using composite cables also delivers a good picture. Using the built-in rf modulator to output over channel 3 or 4 doesn't work with modern digital tuners- i no longer own an old tv with an analog tuner so i can't test how this works. Under menu/ channel search/ modulation you can enable "loop through" which will allow you to watch one channel using your tv's digital tuner and record another using the box's tuner- you won't need to use a splitter inline before the box. . The menus are responsive enough- they are not instant fast, but i have seen slower on big-name boxes. Pressing the ok key during regular viewing will show you the channel list. You can edit your channel names under menu/ program/ program edit. If you get bored there are games like tetris, snakes, and reversi- also found in menu/ program/ game. . The epg (electronic-program-guide) is decent. Since epg is embedded in the atsc broadcast signal (along with time data) i find it amusing that the box displays epg info even though none of my tvs do. That being said- if you are familiar with cable and satellite on-screen program guide be prepared to be disappointed- so manage your expectations- there is a reason that tivo has a subscription fee. This is not tivo, but it does provide an onscreen guide of upcoming programming and the ability to set scheduled recordings with just a few clicks. The scheduling functions are basic, but you can set daily or weekly repeating schedules. It will warn you and prevent you from setting overlapping recordings. I feel the most obvious function missing is epg full grid guide, the program list is displayed by channel. You can't see what is on multiple channels in the same time slot. Be aware also that viewing the guide for a channel actually changes to that channel, so there is a limitation here. If the box is in time-shift, playback, or currently recording it will not allow you to go to the epg. So make sure you have scheduled your recordings before the box starts a scheduled recording. . (added 23 may 14) so far my single greatest complaint, and honestly it is a minor annoyance, i wish it allowed setting a label for a recording when setting up a scheduled recording. Scheduled recordings are labeled by channel name and timed/date. It is possible to re-label the recording after. So i keep a 3x5 card handy to remind me what shows i record by channel, time, and day. (added 29 january 14) i've had recordings fail with scheduled recording if i didn't set at least one minute difference between the end of one recording and the beginning of the next. I've found that the least amount of key strokes to do this is change the start time to 1 minute after. It seems that every show starts with a review of previous episodes anyway. Once i started using the 1 minute after method it hasn't failed a recording. . I plugged a 128gb usb flash drive in and tested the time-shift capability, it works as expected. To start time-shifting you press the pause key- you will get the message "entering time shift, waiting"- then press the play key. The manual does not describe this correctly. While time-shifting the osd shows on the bottom of the display, press the exit key to hide the osd, press the info key to recall it. . (added 29 january 14) use the biggest usb flash drive you can afford. The video format at full hd runs nearly 7gb per hour. If you had one of these in the living room and the bedroom, you can easily pull the usb storage out of one and stick it in the other to watch shows you've recorded. Call it the low-tech-hopper. . One detail i find unusual is that while fast-forwarding during playback of a recording there is no osd showing relative position in the playback. While the box is recording you will have a recording osd in the top left corner of the display- press the exit key to hide the osd, press the info key to recall it. . On many laptops i have to use 2 usb ports to power an external harddrive (spinning disk type), but this box provides enough power through just the single usb port. The drive had multiple partitions both fat and ntfs- all partitions show up. You can adjust the time-shift buffer from the default 1gb by increments of . 5 gb up to 4 gb, you will find this setting under usb/ pvr configure/ record device/ timeshift size. . (added 29 january 14) use a flash drive. The box will time-shift to a external hard disk drive, it will play back your movie collection too, but i have had it fail scheduled recordings with the hard disk drive- even when i observed the 1 minute after rule mentioned above. After a little experimentation, and time staring at the box, and listening to it in operation i believe it is due to the time it takes for the hard-drive to spin up. When the scheduled recording kicks in the box spins up the hard-drive, but if the hard-drive speed is a little slow the box detects that the drive is not ready so it aborts the recording. You might have a different experience with a better external hard-drive. My recommendation is to stick to flash media- with no moving parts or spinning disks it gives better assured performance. . Pressing the usb button on the remote will take you to the usb menu, then select the pvr icon and look for a folder called hbpvr to find your recordings. The recordings are named according to station call-sign/ date/ time. A menu appears across the bottom of the display that indicates which keys on the remote do what function. You can delete /rename files from this menu. To play a recording you have a few options. You can press the ok key to select the file and it will start playing the recording, or you can press the play key, you will be presented with a choice to "startresume", press the ok key to resume a previous playback or press the exit key to play from the beginning. Fast-forward in the preview and see the relative position as it fast forwards, then press the hold key to go full screen. . The video files played without issue on my windows 8 laptop using vlc. I've been building my own htpcs since tv capture cards have been available. I've been using dvr/ pvr appliances and applications since the first tivo and since directvs original ultimatetv. I've used myhtpc, mythtv, beyondtv, just to name a few. I currently subscribe to a satellite provider and use their whole home dvr, it is a good product- but for a subscription free system this device has me impressed. It performs as well as most mentioned above, and better than many. It has a few shortcomings- but nothing that i would consider a deal breaker. The only detail unknown (and only time will tell) is how well the box holds up. . Overall this box performs solidly, far far better than i expected for such an inexpensive purchase. This box doesn't have some features that i would like to have: grid epg, more than 1 usb port, ethernet or wifi, dual tuner recording, capability for an internal hard-drive. These are nice-to-haves, and most of these features are available on other units that cost 3 to 5 times as much. At this price point- the only reason you will be disappointed is if you have unrealistic expectations. I would highly recommend this product for anyone who has ota television available. -Q. Kathlene

PROS
  • Update: the unit just died. I used it for about 6 months. All of a sudden, the power won't even turn on. But it's only $35, so i just bought another one. I almost got the $300 upgrade, but that one doesn't have an antenna pass-through. It's nice to be able to use the tuner on this and on my tv so i can record one thing and watch another. . Previous review: this device is working great. Been watching all my tv through this. The tuner is better than on my tv, so i get channels i didn't get before. I can set it to record shows while i'm away, and while i'm watching live tv, i can pause it, which i love because i never have to watch commercials again. I just pause it for a while, go off and do something else, then come back and fast forward through the annoying commercials. . However, this is a basic, bare bones, and pretty "cheap" piece of equipment. First of all, you have to get some sort of storage, which adds to the cost considerably. I got a 1tb hard drive because i got tired of running out of space just using a flash drive. Now i'm able to record a whole weekend of football, but it cost like twice as much as i had planned to spend. . The other thing is that it it feels cheap. The buttons on the remote are really strangely labeled and don't correspond with the commands you want to use. So, in order to go from the menu window, where you select the show you want to playback, to full-screen playback mode (watching the show), you have to hit a button called "hold". To delete a show, you press button "epg" (? ) couldn't they have just put different labels on the remote buttons? it's weird. But the directions are clear on the screen which button to press, so it's not a problem. . Finally, the usb port was just sort of hot-glued to the circuit board, so when i tried plugging in my hard drive, the socket pushed back inside the unit. I had to open the case and find it to plug my drive in. Kind of janky. But still highly functional!
  • Good ota recorder for the price. The menu system is a little clunky but certainly navigable. The system instructions say you can connect an external hd via usb (front panel). I connected a spare 1tb drive, thinking "that'll do it. " the external drive was in ntsb format and the unit stores media in fat32 format. Fat32 is limited to 32gb partitions. That being said, a flash drive of 32gb or less will be sufficient as long as the write time will keep up. I placed an old spare 4gb flash drive on it and it worked perfectly. It records 40 minutes of hd so, from that, you can figure about 10 minutes of hd per gig. Therefore a 32gb flash should hold about 320 minutes. Not bad for a (no monthly fee) ota pvr. I'm happy.
CONS
  • Viewtv at-163 atsc digital tv converter box and media player w/ recording pvr function / hdmi out / coaxial out / composite out / usb input. . Pros:. Decent tuner; can record and play back tv broadcasts with full resolution. It plays flacs! (+1 star rating just for that). Comes with analog and hdmi cables. Remote could be worse. . Cons:. Very buggy hardware + firmware (mar 19 2015). Cannot reliably play back 1080i recordings - fixed by aug. 2016 firmware update! . Recording timer is horrid, nearly useless - fixed by aug. 2016 firmware update! . . Original 2-star review (see below for revised 3-star opinion). My viewtv at-163 is a piece of junk, not ready for production. This is, by far, the most frustrating (to try to use) consumer electronics device i've ever encountered in all my years. And this is true even after i'd spent hours trying various storage types/devices and formats (. A fast hd, formatted in fat32 with 32kb cluster size, seems to be the best all-around compromise). . If anything has already been recorded in the pvr directory, it takes far too long to enter record mode (so if something comes on that you suddenly decide you'd like to record, it's probably already too late). Sometimes, after waiting about 20 seconds to enter record mode, it will say that it is exiting record mode for an unknown error. It will fail like that repeatedly. If i turn the power off and back on and try again, it will eventually successfully enter record mode on the first try. . The recording timer is ignorant of day-of-week; all it knows is dates! so it is impossible to set a m-f timer. So it is impossible to set a timer for saturday on ch. 3 at 6pm if you want to record m-f (well, daily) on ch. 2 at 6pm - that is correctly seen as a conflict. If you set a timer to record from 12:30 a. M. To 12:59 a. M. On saturday morning (friday night), it is impossible to set at timer from 11:35 p. M. On saturday night until 12:34 on sunday morning - that is incorrectly seen as a conflict. Worse, when a timer is set for daily or weekly, each time the recording is made, the date of the next scheduled recording is automatically incremented incorrectly; it gets set days further into the future than it should be! so all recurring timer settings are totally worthless anyway! . . Then there is the severe problem with playing back 1080i recordings from nbc and cbs (for some reason, same-length pbs 1080i recordings occupy only half the disk space as those 2, and play back ok). If you simply press play (and nothing else), it might play through to the end. But if you dare to try to skip any commercials (which is, even when successful, far more trouble and time-consuming than it should be), or try to replay the last 10 seconds to catch something you missed, there is a 99. 9% likelihood that the unit will freeze/hang/reboot (only once did i need to unplug the unit to do so; normally waiting a minute or 2 is all it takes). Iow, if you want to (try to) watch the 1/2 hour nightly newscast in less than 30 minutes, it will probably take you 40 minutes. (my old dvd recorder, with its 1. 25x playback and commercial skip features, lets me watch it in under 18 minutes. ). . It is also impossible to play back old (div3 - "not supported", and very poorly at that! ) divx videos. And large directories (say, 1800 mp3s) take a long time (say, 3 4 minutes) to load, though they do load fully and can be played in shuffle mode. Album cover art is not supported at all. Plus when's the last time you saw a digital media player that did not include any visual progress indicator? and while mp3 id3 tags are supported (some of them appear during playback), flac tags are ignored. The playback is not gapless between tracks. . The unit's responsiveness is typically not too bad, though occasionally it does not respond for about a minute. The remote is not horrible, but it sends out a very narrow ir beam, so it must be pointed almost directly at the unit. Similarly, if you're expecting the analog audio output to sound as good as the digital, you'll be disappointed; but if you're expecting it to sound horrible, you might be pleasantly surprised. For both the remote and the dacs, i've seen and heard worse. . However, when it comes to product support, viewtv could hardly do worse. I found their single-page web site. There is no firmware update available there. I've written repeatedly to the published email address, documenting failure modes in detail, asking for updated firmware, and not heard anything at all in response. . . . November 2016 update:. . The unit's still working. (just keep it out in the open, not enclosed, so it doesn't get too hot. ) last month i wondered if viewtv ever got its act together enough to offer a firmware update. They had! . . The unit is still not perfect. I'd call it barely ready for production now. It's finally quite usable and pretty stable now. It's possible to scan fast forward or reverse when playing back videos without crashing the unit, regardless of the format/resolution. Recurring record timers now advance correctly into the future each time. It's still ignorant of day-of-week. . There are still some of what i consider glitches, including sometimes forgetting how the closed captioning is suposed to be formatted, an occasional unwillingness for the unit to accept a properly edited recording timer (no error message about conflict, it just accepts the entry but ignores the change. . While i can be pretty picky about (noticing and not condoning) stuff like that, i think i'm also understanding of technical limitations. I am tolerant of the fact that the audio and video are not always well-synchronized, because i remember that it was not that long ago when hdtv first appeared and that was common-place among professional equipment that cost a lot more than 100 times what this unit does. While there are other inexpensive tuners that don't have this issue, how many of them can record and play back video in full resolution? similarly, i don't blame this unit for not showing epg any further in advance than what the broadcasted (or cable? ) channel provides, though it's still true that occasionally a reboot will allow more programming to show up. . The playing of flac audio files is still much appreciated, even though it's not fully supported: among thousands of flac files, a few perfectly good files say "not supported" while a few others mis-play occasional loud bad noise. Trying to navigate (fast forward or rewind) in a flac file will cause that loud bad noise. But most files, if just left to play, sound just fine (with the volume turned down to 16). . With the august 2016 firmware, i can now recommend this unit . For people with reasonably low expectations, it's ok.
  • I cannot recommend this. You can't reset the clock. It uses the time set by the ota tv signal. The problem is it is time shifted by 3 minutes, so it starts too early. You can set region and daylight savings time. You can modify program times to some degree, but it's glitchy. . It locks up regularly. 2 or so times a day. . Screws up the reception. When i use my older dishtv pal, the signal is better. When i use the rca jacks to the dvd, reception is fine, but going to hdmi, reception suffers a lot. . Those are the main reasons i think it sells for $35 apiece. . I think the worst of these are software problems. If the company would just hire a competent programmer, they might be able to fix it, but as it is, i wouldn't buy it again. (please read below) i've been able to program and record a lot of shows, but it is unpredictable when it will work okay, and when it won't. . *modificationto the above* after having used it a while, most of the above is true. I did find out why the programming is unpredictablle. One station is around 45 minutes off (presumably to help thwart recordings), so once you get there, recording something on another station, or even on that same station becomes a problem. Once i realized this, it made programming a lot easier. It crashes less if you leave it off during the day when it will be recording (it turns itself on if it is programmed to record, a big plus). It seems to reset itself when it is turned off. Also, fast forwarding and reversing a few times during a show can make it crash. When it crashes, i have to unplug it and replug it. Once you've learned its picadillos, it is a passable buy, so i moved it from 2 to 3 stars. The software in it still needs fixing though.
  • Very interesting device, wish it would work without the "odd" errors. I gave it three stars because of all the functions the unit has. With all the operations this unit can do, one would think it would sell for a higher price. Having the program guide is a big plus. Being able to rename recordings is great. A con on renaming is you can not rename the ota channels it picks up. Does very well in a scan to find what is in your area. Another odd problem i discovered was with a 3-1/2" hard drive. When recording a program, the drive made a loud clicking and the drive was very hot. I switched over to a usb powered drive and this problem did not show. I don't know if it had anything to do with the different drives, but i did not like the noise or the heat. The most annoying issue is with play back of a recorded program. If you fast forward past the commercials there are times when the unit will lock up and the only way to fix the problem it to pull the plug. If you are going to stop playback when in the middle or so of a two hour recording, best to check the time mark. Several times restarting the playback at a different time, it may jump to that mark or it may just start over then you have the problem of fast forwarding to where you left off. The unit does the job for ota viewing and recording to some extent. The problems it has can get to be a drag. No recommendation to purchase or not. I will leave that up to you. It is good and bad.

atsc digital tv converter box ViewTV AT-163 ATSC Digital TV Converter Box and Media Player (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

From all the reviews i have read, i wasn't expecting a fully functional dvr. It does what i want. I can record cbs, since most of their shows are not on hulu. As others have mentioned the remote is laid out very stangely (i wouldn't say poorly), just not as smooth as other systems. The manual and button labeling is also not intuitive at all. About anytime i need to record a show i have to look which buttons do i push again. With that said, the picture quality is fantastic, better than any other dvr i've ever had. I also like that i don't have to pay a subscription fee. . Oh, one more draw back, either it doesn't do it, or i haven't figured it out, but the shows get stamped with the channel name i. E. Ktvi, not abc/cbs/fox, etc, and then military time stamped, so if you have a lot recorded you have to fumble through deciphering what show is on which channel at which time (then get a calendar to figure the day of the week). Again, clunky. . I would still buy it again, for as little as i record it's a bargain compared to any tivo type system. 3 months of tivo subscription pays for the box alone.

Click to see NoticeViewtv At-163 Atsc Digital Tv Converter Box Media Player (at 163)"It feels a little light/cheap, but based on the price, i wasn't expecting that much more. . The picture quality is excellent and it performs better than the samsung hd atsc tuner it's replacing - getting more channels and tuning them in more reliably. . Based on other reviews and photos of the remote, it seems as though the remote control has been redesigned recently. When i first got the converter box, the remote would not work with fresh duracell batteries. After trying 3 sets of different duracell batteries, i contacted the vendor that the remote would not function. He apologized and sent another remote no charge, so i have no complaints with the customer service. Sadly, when the second remote arrived, that one did not function either with the duracell batteries. Looking closer, it seems as though the battery was hanging up on the plastic instead of making contact with the conductors in the remote. I went out and purchased new rayovac batteries today that have a more pronounced positive end protrusion and now both remotes function as expected. Lesson: use cheaper batteries in these remotes. . Based on the cheap feeling and the battery inconvenience, i give this box 4 stars."

(0) Question: Does the unit provide epg?

(1) Question: I'm curious how you set-up recordings on this device. does it have its own program guide?

(2) Question: I live off the grid and only have an antenna, will this record programs?

Viewtv At-263 Atsc Digital Tv Converter Box Hdmi Cable (4331040205) FAQ.

9/24/17 update. Had a power surge elsewhere in the house. It apparently toasted the unit. I just ordered a similar pvr box for about $5 less. The viewtv did its job. I figure these boxes are mostly similar, so i'm trying something new. . 3/22/16 update: it's been one month, and i'm still discovering little things. Quite by accident, while viewing a live channel, i pressed the pause button, which froze the picture. On hitting play, the show started from the very beginning, and i noticed "time shifting" appear on the screen. I haven't duplicated this, but i believe this is how you may start a live show from the beginning, should you tune in a bit late. . Slight glitch: my preset times to record the news sometimes gets lost, when i turn the box off, and i have to reprogram. I guess i could leave the box on all the time, but i don't see the point. . Timer to turn box on and off. You can set a time so the box turns itself on, and off. Somewhere in the menu, you can find this setting. I've disabled this feature, but thought i'd point it out. . Workaround in viewing another channel, while recording another channel. I discovered, at times when i'm recording one channel, i can't change to another, live channel. I found that if i change my video source on my tv to "tv", i can change the channel on the box, and that channel appears on my tv. You must have your tv set to channel 3 for this to work. . I now have an external hard drive plugged into the usb port to record shows. There's no lag for the hd to "spin up" as i've read other pvr's do. I have other video content on the hd in varying formats: . Mp4, . Avi both play back through viewtv receiver. Oh, . Vob (a dvd file format) plays back as well, which is a really cool feature for those that rip their dvds to archive them. Since a dvd can have numerous . Vob files, this can be problematic in viewing a dvd in the proper order. I keep my . Mp4 videos in one folder, and when video finishes, it automatically starts playing the next. I assume this is true for any video files in one folder, but can't say i'm sure. But having the option to play compressed video files (i play mostly youtube vids i've saved) is a nice feature. . All in all, i'm still very happy with this box. . I'm new to the cord cutting revolution, and figured i needed a pvr to round out my collection of relatively cheap options, to enhance my viewing experience. After reading many reviews on online store, i opted for this model, since this model is considered older: i figured, this model is newer, and the options of viewing various video formats via the usb stick was a plus (as you can through the older model). . Since this is my first pvr, i really have nothing to compare it to, but the favorable reviews the at-163 received, and the price, i figured i couldn't do too badly. . Setup was a breeze, and i didn't even look at the instructions. I already had an external antenna, so i connected that to the rf "in" connector on the box. I also had an hdmi cable already, plugged that into my tv, then into the box, and then i plugged the power cable. "boot up" appeared on the lcd screen, and i was immediately brought to the setup menu. I chose my language, i then navigated to the channel scan area, let the box do its thing, and boom, i had a very crisp ota (over the air) channel being broadcast. . I wanted to test the recording ability, so i found a handy usb flash drive, plugged that into the port in the front of the box, and pressed record (it was an old episode of seinfeld. I stopped the recording by pressing "exit" (if i recall correctly), pressed "usb" on the remote, and navigated to the file on the flash drive, and pressed the ok button. A small preview of the show appeared on the bottom right, and to view it full screen, i had to press the "hold" button. The picture was kind of snowy, but that's how that channel appeared (also, it was a very old episode). I then navigated to a channel with a good picture, pressed record, recorded for a few minutes, stopped, and previewed. It was a crisp recording. The box records in "mts" format. Curious, i unplugged the flash drive, plugged it into my win 10 laptop, and i was able to play the video using vlc player, a free multimedia player that plays many audio, and video formats. So i think this would answer any questions as to whether you can use the flash drive on different boxes, or your computer. Anyone looking for a pvr box should make sure it plays numerous file formats. I had an . Mp4 video file on my flash drive, and was able to play that through the box, to my tv in living color. . You can record one channel, while watching another, as long as you set the "modulation mode" to "loop through. " this becomes clear as you go through the setup menu (sorry, it's late, and i don't want to go through a step by step tutorial now). . I believe you can pull in a better picture quality due to the box being powered, but, i'm not sure. All i know is, the picture quality is better than when i had a simple antenna connected to my flatscreen's coaxial connection. . The remote is rather bizarre, and every inch is covered with a button of some type. So far, the "ok" and "exit" and "menu" buttons are the ones i've used the most to navigate, aside from the channel buttons. This doesn't have triple a batteries included, so be prepared. . There was a nice feature i discovered for recorded programs, that i saw was a complaint with other boxes. You can rename recorded files. When your are in the recorded videos area, at the lower right, is the option to rename. I was concerned i would have to write down every recorded program. I consider this a huge plus. . I will update when possible, but i literally received the box this evening. So far, so good. Be realistic. This is a $40 box. I will answer any questions as they come up, but i really need time to learn the ins and outs of this box. With online store prime video, and netflix, there's really no reason for me to pay the obscene amounts of money carriers are asking for. This little, affordable box is a great addition. I'll mostly be recording the news, so i'm sure this will suit those needs, and the random network show i may want to record. . Cord cutters unite! -Notice from F. Lorenz, New South Wales

I've been using this for one week. I could not be more pleased. For $35, plus a cheap usb drive, i have a perfectly functional digital video recorder. As a bonus, the tuner on this device pulls in more channels than my tv does. . I bought this one, as opposed to all other look-alikes on online store, because it can be set up to feed the antenna signal through the device. That way, you don't need an antenna splitter and an extra run of coax cable to be able to watch tv on one channel while recording on another. . Took me maybe 10 minutes to set it up and start recording. The device was set more-or-less completely set up to work with my tv, right out of the box. Connected the antenna coax to the input. Connected the hdmi output to the tv. Plugged in a usb drive. And ran coax from the output of the tuner to the input of the tv, then used the setup menu to pass the antenna signal through to the tv. . I found the following shortcomings, all of which i judge to be minor. As noted by others, you have to point the remote at the box to get it to work. Some of the key presses are not intuitive. Sometimes if i hit the wrong key, i can't seem to recover, and the quickest solution is to turn it off and back on again. And, unique to my setup, there is some crosstalk between the remote for this device and the remote for our sound bar. And you have to fast-forward through commercials manually. (but on the plus side, the ff function goes up to 32x normal speed, which is very fast. ). . All of which i resolved by a) pointing the remote at the box and b) learning to hit the right keys, at the right time. . Here's the back story. I wanted to record a show that is broadcast daily. I figured, how hard can that be? . . I looked at tivo and found out that a) you have to pay a fairly substantial subscription fee, and b) it's a big brother device that reports your tv watching back to tivo central. Forget that. Next i looked at a few purpose-built dvrs that are still available, but they all seemed to cost in the $400 range. That seemed like a lot of money for a fairly basic task. And then there was a whole bunch of devices just like this - digital tuners with just enough functionality to be able to record a show. Anywhere from $20 to $40, but you have to add your own disk drive. With very mixed reviews. I figured it was worth a gamble. And it looks like it has paid of for me. Mine works great, for the task i bought it for. . If you want to record something at a given time, the menu for setting that up is about as straightforward as it gets. Give it the channel, the start time, the stop time, and it'll record that every day. As long as there is power to the device, it'll turn itself on to record. It dumps a file to the usb drive that shows the channel, date, and time. To play it back, click on the file name. At that point, it works just like any other recording device.

- R. AudreyViewtv at-263 atsc digital tv converter box bundle with viewtv 25 mile flat hd digital indoor tv antenna and hdmi cable w/ recording pvr function / hdmi out / coaxial out / composite out / usb input. Great product! it shows a very clear picture and, with the addition of an extended range antenna, can get channels within 50 mile range. The installation was easy and it works great. There are many features included in the device. Although some channels have occasional pixelation problems, it generally provides a very clear image. Because of the blackout of the local nbc station due to disputes with cable companies, the addition allows additional channels not available by the likes of directv. The main problem was mostly resolved by re-positioning the antenna. I would recommend this product to anyone within range of local broadcast tv stations.

For the price this did what it was expected. I use an ota powered antenna in maryland and got all the channels i wanted. Menu allows me to delete channels. Didn t come with batteries for the remote but no big deal. My panasonic tv tuner died so i wanted to not throw away my tv and just get a new tuner. I hooked into my xbox to save an hdmi slot.

I was a bit skeptical of this, but it works! great reception for something that does not resemble my idea, of an antenna. It needed to be in the window, for the best reception. The tv towers in my area are 15 miles to the south, but my window faces east. Didn't matter. Works great.

The super soft, unobtrusively thin design and powerful reception capabilities make this antenna a top choice for any home. 4). Fast and easy setup in 3 steps: a. Connect the antenna to cable/ant in on the back of any hdtv. B. Place the antenna in an optimal position, usually on a wall or window. C. Scan for channels using your tv's 'channel search' and be ready to enjoy free tv! indoor tv antenna specifications: frequency range: 47-230mhz, 470-862mhz receiving range: fm/vhf/uhf gain: 28db output level:100dbμv impedance: 75Ω noise figure: 3db power supply: via usb power adapter(5v/100ma) 1byone comprehensive warranty: all 1byone tv antennas come with a 30-day money-back guarantee so our customers can purchase without worry. A happy customer experience is our 1 priority and so we also stand by our customers with a 12-month warranty. Simply contact us and we will happily send a replacement if any issues arise. Please note: 1. For flatscreen hdtvs, please check the tv's manual to make sure the tv has a built-in tuner for receiving over-the-air broadcast, and make sure this tuner can receive hd signals or else it will not be able to receive and watch hd channels. 2. Retune your tv and/or digital box from time to time to ensure you are receiving all available services. Retuning takes only a few minutes using the remote control. 3. Signal quality determines the picture quality and how many channels you can receive. Once you receive the antenna, hook it up to your tv, and try moving it around your home to find the placement with the best signal. You might be surprised how many hd channels you can receive! 4. Antenna signal strength can vary depending on distance from the tower, terrain, and weather. Reposition the antenna in a different location if needed. It is best for the antenna to be in line of sight with the tv tower(s) and avoid obstructions. Always re-scan for channels after moving the antenna. 5. This is an amplified antenna. If a signal cannot be received when using the external amplifier, remove the amplifier and try again. In some instances the amplifier may cause self-oscillation, which may interfere with signal reception. 6. If your tv has no built-in tuner, you can add an atsc digital converter box to receive the hd signal. Search b01n5mlc1m on online store for the 1byone converter box.

I decided that cable was getting to be to expensive and most of the channels were crap so i purchased this to get the local channels. I have two of these on different sides of my house. I live in a rural area so i don't get everything but i get all the major networks and some other channels. The cord is long so there is plenty of room to move it to wherever the best signal is. It did come with an adhesive to attach the antenna to whatever surface you want but if you need to move it for whatever reason, it will be difficult and may peel some paint off your wall, it did to mine. It can be leaned against something without having to use the adhesive because the weather will sometimes affect your signal and it may have to be adjusted.

- V. WilsonSeemed like a good deal. Amplifier did not work . I returned it. Maybe just bad luck. If you purchase i suggest you try it right away. Save the shipping box just in case. May be a good product, i just don't like things that don't work right out of the box. . After returning antenna, i was contacted by the company and sent another antenna. They were very concerned about their product and my satisfaction. This one does work. We get about 16 channels. Very clear. Some freezing of picture, especially if antenna is moved. I think depending on your location this could provide some basic tv and save you a lot of money. Can't really compare this antenna with another, seems ok. I am very impressed with their customer service and would buy from them again as i feel they would fully back their product. I've changed the rating to 4 stars instead of 2!

Excellent product! i have been using this antenna a few weeks now, and i am very pleased with it. I bought two, one for my living room and one for the bedroom. When it was hooked up, i was impressed by getting 53 channels on the first tv! i was equally impressed when we hooked up the second one! i do not miss my cable service since i can watch whatever else i want by way of online store prime, hulu, etc. I have recommended this product to a few people who will be purchasing it. In fact, my daughter ordered one for her home as soon as mine was hooked up, and she saw the great results!

The F.A.Q. for viewtv at-163 atsc digital tv converter box and media player

I purchased the viewtv at 163 over a year ago. I liked the unit pretty well. It had a great picture and recorded well, but it had several problems. It would trip out when fast forwarding. It would not record on a daily or weekly schedule as expected when set up to do so. It recorded at the proper times but random days. I don't think the unit was quite ready for prime time when brought to market. Shortly after i bought the unit i tried to contact tech support with no response at that time. A few days ago i tried again and got an answer. They were very helpful. They emailed updated software which i loaded to my flash drive and inserted in the usb port, as soon as i turned the unit on it immediately uploaded. After scanning my channels back in everything works great. My thanks go out to tech support. This is now a good product at a good value.

A number of questions have been asked here.

As others have written, this unit is not perfect. But with a $30 pricetag (after $30 promotion which was applied at checkout) i really can't argue too much against it. . Setting it up and programming it took a bit of time since the manual is pretty useless, but i was able to figure it out. The remote is weird, but if you have a learning remote you can map the keys to ones that make more sense to you. The tuner is less sensitive than the one in my hdtv, so rather than using the loop-through function (and thus bypassing the tuner in the hdtv) i used a splitter to split the antenna feed to both tuners, which is working really well. The epg is pretty good. For reasons unknown, the display shows a sequential channel number instead of the broadcast channel number; not sure what thinking was in that decision. I bought this unit for the recording capability, not to use as a primary tuner, so the channel number doesn't bother me. . I like that it can record in 1080 if desired, and will also record in 720 or 480 to save space or for older shows. A half-hour show at 480 uses about 2 gb of space. I plugged in a 16 gb flash drive, let the unit format it (fat32) and set up some shows to record. With a flash drive, the unit is completely silent when it turns on, records, and turns off, which i really appreciate for night-time or early-morning recordings (the unit is in my bedroom and i am a light sleeper). The display is a bit bright so i put a piece of cardboard over it to block it when the lights come on at night. . For those who are not techy at all, this is not an easy plug-n-play unit, so you may want to look for something else. To be honest, i looked at units costing over $200 (such as the magnavox hd/dvd recorder, which records to dvd only in sd) and decided the hassle of this unit was fairly minor. I was prepared to pay $60, but this really is a steal at $30.

I cut the cable cord a couple of years ago, and relied on my old dvr/vcr for recording over-the-air programs, until it sadly died. I tried to replace it with an hdd dvr for about $400, because i needed a built-in tuner. Unfortunately, that product was defective straight out-of-the-box, with a distorted picture and sound that couldn't be repaired. . And so i was still stuck, with no way to record ota programming. Then i stumbled upon this little gem, for about 1/6 the price of the hdd dvr model. From receipt of delivery to full set-up up took about 10 minutes, all with very little reference to the enclosed manual. Which is fortunate, since (as many have mentioned here) it's really not worth the paper it's written on. In fact, andy t. Knote's review has proven more valuable than the manual, far and away. . I have found that i need to adjust my antenna a bit more often to pick up all the channels my old dvr/vcr used to snag with no problem, but that has as much to do with a low-end antenna, and my location in relation to the transmitters in my area as to anything else. And the fact that it records to a variety of devices - from an external drive, to a flash thumb drive, to even an old click-free back-up storage drive - means i'll never be stuck without a blank dvr-rw disc when two conflicting shows are on, and i need to record one and watch the other. . I would've gone a perfect five stars, were it not for a really bare-bones manual, a remote that is. Just oddly and awkwardly designed, and the fact that no apparent support or contact information is easily accessible for the manufacturer. That being said, i highly recommend the viewtv pvr for it's price, ease of set-up and use, and overall versatility.

I could not obtain hd tv over a satellite in my area so i wanted to convert non hd tv from my cable provider into hd tv. This little box works great! my only purpose for obtaining cable was to watch live sports. Everything else is streamed. So if you are using this and only watching tv it may not be exactly what you need. Might be better to upgrade your cable subscription. The two things that you should know is. 1. It changes around all you channels from the cable provider as it searches for available channels, i made a cheat sheet so i would know to go to 32-3 or whatever for my favorite channels. 2. The box searches for channels and some of the normal channels you may have cannot be found and converted. To get around this i use my tv provider to stream channels like espn, tnt, fox sports 1 from my x-box. Twc has a live tv app for tnt, fox sports 1 and several others. Espn has their app for streaming. Overall it did the trick to get my hd sports on the major broadcasting channels.

This is exactly what i wanted. I haven't used it for a dvr, but may in the future. If i needed that primarily, i'd probably have gotten something that doesn't require a separate component. . I needed to replace a vcr player that i used only as an analog tuner. I could have used another cable box, but there were issues. I would have needed a splitter because i already have a cable box in that room on that cable line. Then, i'd have two cable boxes in the same room, using the same remote. Problems . . This does exactly what i need. It gets the couple dozen non-encrypted cable stations i wanted. It lets me "pass through" the cable signal so the line goes from this tuner to the cable box. . Set up is pretty easy, per the instructions, but the user interface is far from perfect. The auto-search gets the stations set up. The issue i had was that all the encrypted stations showed up (and said "encrypted signal" when i switched to it). Then, there are a whole bunch of stations that said "no signal". Finally, a bunch of stations had a blank screen and said nothing. So, it took me a couple hours to go through them all an weed everything out. . Next, you can assign names to the stations, and sort the list in a bunch of ways. However, there's no way to sort the stations by the names you gave them. That seems an oversight. . Finally, i can't find a way to save these settings to a usb drive or something, so if anything resets, i'll start all over again. . I did email the company's support with questions, to see if i was missing something, but haven't gotten a response after a couple of weeks. The price is good for this and it does what i need, so i'd buy it again.

I was very pleased with the viewtv packaging since it was done in a very professional manner and had provided great protection for the product inside. After opening the box i found that the package contained instructions that were easy to follow with little difficulty in interpreting the directions. Although written well, i did find that there were points in the instructions which left me in a position to interprete minor parts. Assembly is not required other than a couple of cords which must be connected to the box. After beginning the programing i found it to do exactly as advertised - it allowed me to record ota television, use a 'guide' to select channels, set repeating programming, and much more. I did notice that the video and audio was slightly less presentable when i viewed shows through the box versus directly on my uhdtv, but this was not an issue since i was pleased to simply be able to record ota television. Great product that i'd recommend to others.

Operates as advertised, but a few kinks. . 1. My intention was to use this on the tv in my basement so i wouldn't have to have it on my main tv, adding yet another box on my entertainment center. The plan was to use it to record, and then carry the recording on the thumb drive to my western digital media player to watch. As it turns out, the dvr records in "blocks" of 511 megabytes, so recording the 24 series opener gave me 25 files. Only the first file was named with a ". Mts" extension. That one plays fine. All the rest of the files are named ". Mts1" ". Mts2" ". Mts3" and so on. So, to play each of the files on any source other than the dvr, i had to rename all the files to ". Mts". . 2. File naming. The recorded files only show the station id and time stamp. It makes no sense to me that if there is an electronic program guide and the ability to rename files manually (both of which work great by the way), why the unit can't name the recording using the name of the show. . 3. Clunky remote. I'm never lost because the on-screen prompts that show what you can do, but seriously, why would i press "hold" to go full screen? how about a button that says "full screen" or something intuitive. I bought this as a test for my mother in law, and she will eventually pick up on the visual cues, but it needs to be made more user friendly. . All in all, a good buy. I'll probably be buying another one shortly. . Update 5-13:. . I gave it another go with a faster usb hard drive, and this time, the entire program recorded in one file. It would be nice to know why. I can only speculate as to why. I hope the manufacturer is reading this. Anyway, make sure you have a fast flash drive. My original usb drive gave hiccups every few seconds. Now it works fine. . Update 1/21/16:. . Unit has been having issues for a while now. About two months ago, the coax input quit working, so i had to eat up an hdmi port to support it. It quit turning on with the remote, although turning off and all other functions were fine. It has frozen up a couple of times in the last week or so, and finally just shut off with no sign of life. . I still recommend this device. I bought it on may 3, 2014 for 59. 99. That is still less than one month of service with any cable provider and has provided me nearly two years of good service. I just ordered another one to replace it, and now they're 32. 99. Good going viewtv :).

This is a pretty good converter box/media player for the money. However, i should point out-as far as sensitivity in picking up tv signals-my old magnavox box(from 2009) picks up two channels whereas this box-i can only pick up one channel(and i did try several different antenna configurations). On the plus side-this is a really good media player and i've tried 3 different flashdrives and they all boot up/play just fine. If you leave a movie in the middle-then return-it doesn't recall where you left off(but i use the "goto" function for this-punch in the time setting and it takes me right to where i left off) i tested the pvr function and it appears to record just fine as well. There might be better(and more expensive) converter/media players out on the market-but at this price point-i can't complain. It's a good little box for the money!

Worked out of the box with no issues. The picture quality via the hdmi port is excellent. The sensitivity of the tuner is very good as it pulled in several stations that our other tv's do not.

I. Jessica, South Carolina

This item works great! i have it hooked up to my amplified antenna that i've placed in the attic. I get nearly every channel. The tuner's sensitivity is pretty good. I get 30 out of a possible 32 channels. My tv's tuner will pick up all 32 while this receiver is not sensitive to get the most distant and weakest signals. Once again, my panasonic tv tuner was able to do that. But, you can't beat this price. The greatest part about this device is that all the signals are beautiful high def 1080p signals and there's a great dvr function built right into this thing. Like i said, for the money, nothing else exists!

I bought this model to hook up a moviemate 72 projector with an oa antennae but because the 72 was only a 720p output i decided not to use it for my moviemate but hold it as a replacement for my 1020p projector in my family room. I chose the iview tuner as i have an earlier version iview hooked up to a pioneer receiver for my epson 1020p projector which also uses over the air broadcasts. I watch my football games with this earlier version iview tuner and projector and it works great. Been using an iview for number of years without mishap. I only gave it 4 stars as i have not used the usb port for recording. I am a senior so it gets hard to comprehend a lot of the instructions, so i keep it simple, but given the quality of the iview so far i am sure it works.

This receiver is great. I have basic cable provided in my community through our hoa. When i tuned my samsung tv (2005 model), it got the channels but all of them were non-hd quality. I tuned my tv using cable option in the menu. Then i bought this received and hooked it up to our cable and voila! now we are getting all local and basic channels in hd quality which seems better than dishtv that we had before. All the pictures are very crisp. I would have given 5-stars if i did not face an intermittent issue of sound going out-of-sync from the video once in a while (sometime if starts lagging a fraction of second). Another great suggestion would be an option to filter out the scrambled channels since they can not be decoded by the receiver without subscription. This receiver tuned 400+ channels but most of them are scrambled without subscription (and this is expected since we get only basic channels for free). Overall a great receiver. I would recommend it!

For the price this is an amazing product. It has a few quirks but if you are looking to cut the cable and go back to broadcast it's a good substitute for a basic dvr. Also, it is much better at dealing with temporary signal loss than my samsung tv tuner. Usually recovers with just some pixelation rather than the screen going blank. No problems using with a usb3 hard disk but make sure the cable is a good fit mechanically or it will be intermittent and drive you crazy. I think a lot of the problems reported on this product are either due to poor reception quality or bad connection to the storage device. A nice feature is the optional display of signal strength which assists with the antenna and preamp setup.

The biggest complaint most reviewers have had against this box is the stability of it. When i tried plugging it in to a tv via hdmi, it would lock up and freeze constantly. I was going to send it back, but, for kicks, i tried it on a different, older tv that only used rca connections. Without the hdmi connected, it's been rock solid, no problems at all in over 2 weeks. I bought it to record tv shows, and for that, it's been working great. I haven't bothered to conduct further experiments with using it via hdmi, but right now, it does what i want it to do, and i'm happy.

Chuck says: ok, i am impressed. For the money this is a very good piece of equipment. I recently "cut the cable" and moved my tv source to over the air (ota) tv and internet services (online store, netflix, hulu, sling, etc). It has been an excellent choice so far, but i have missed my dvr for shows i want to see later. So while researching antenna sourced dvrs/pvrs, my choices were $200 and up- then i found the viewtv at 163. While it is primarily sold as a digital converter box, it also has pvr capabilities through your own usb portable hdd. Out of the box, it was small and light (remote is so light weight that it feels toy-ish). I did not need this as a converter, but i tested it and it works really well, with the exception that it cannot seem to find one of my local stations, but all the other digital/hd channels look really good. It pulled in 27 channels, where as my digital tv found 28 using the same masted antenna. Pro's:. Quickly set up, searched and found local channels. Has ability to exclude channels via manual set up. Has ability to set "favorites" for quick channel jumping. 1 button channel menu with limited current show info. Another button with detailed show info and current/future schedule. You can set recording for a future show (but not far future). Surprisingly good clarity and no obvious signal loss in channel reception. Playback of recordings are just as clear as the original (just like your cable dvr). Has ability to pause live tv (via time shifting). Records to your personal hard drive. This is a pro because it lowered the initial price and gives the ability to change hdds when needed and you can remove the hdd and take it with you traveling to watch on your laptop, etc. I bought a 1gb toshiba portable hdd for about $50 and i can use it on any of my systems. Connections out include hdmi (i get 720i hd picture on most of my stations), av (l/r audio + video rca pins), and rf coax out. Also there is a usb connection to connect a hdd or usb thumb drive. . Con's:. Layout of buttons on remote not intuitive, will take time to get proficient. Guide/schedule is a bit rough, but it is dependent on info encoded in the broadcast tv signal so it's more of an adjustment from cable than a negative on this equipment. Recording, pausing and other similar functions sometimes take a second or two to kick in. Response to using the remote control buttons are just generally slow. Records one show at a time (again, not fair to compare this to $300 multi-tuner dvrs). I deducted a star because of the remote feel and the slow response to button pushing on the remote. . Overall:. I am impressed. I expected this would be - at worst -a digital converter box for an old tv in the shop-and at best a cheap gadget way to record off the air- and one step away from my old vcr stored in the closet. Instead it is a very workable recording option for shows or sporting events. I have a new toy that turns out to be everyday useful and i can record my football without falling behind in my saturday yard work. For $35, it is an excellent buy. Yes, it does not compare with $300 dvrs or your cable/satellite company's set top boxes, but for ota, it is an excellent value and a solid low cost/low frills option to the higher cost/higher frills tablo or channelmaster dvrs.

I'm a recent cable cutter. I am now watching hdtv ota via a mohu 50 powered antenna and streaming thorough a popular streaming device. After i cut the cable, i have to admit i did miss the dvr my cable company provided so i did some research on an alternative. My must haves was that i wanted the dvr to do most everything my cable company dvr did but without paying a monthly charge. The viewtv does mostly that. I had to buy a separate external hd usb device to complete this package. Set up was relatively simple however you do have to manually do everything to schedule a recording, meaning you have to tell the machine similar to an old vcr what day and times when you want it to record. Once you connect the viewtv to your tv, you will use the viewtv remote to change channels. Channel changing is crisp, however the same cannot be said about entering any menu guides within the viewtv. There is a lag when you press the button to record or schedule a recording that can be annoying. I used to have verizon fios dvr which was similar to tivo's dvr. . If you don't mind working a little to schedule your recordings and don't want to pay a monthly subscription, and want to spend around a hundred bucks, all in. Then this dvr is for you. As with everything there are pros and cons. . Pros:. -this product is one of the cheapest i have been able to find and has worked reliably for the time i have been using it. (since 6/9/14). -the viewtv converts (using hdmi) and displays my ota powered antenna assisted hdtv signal beautifully. Ota tv image quality is equal to my old verizon fios cable hdtv image quality. (no exaggeration. ). -the actual viewtv box is very small, about the size of an average hardcover book. -i can record on the fly if i need to take a phone call and record future shows with a little effort. -although the remote button layout is a little clunky, once you memorize what buttons does what, you should be ok. . Cons:. -annoying lag time when you want to view shows you've recorded or want to schedule a recording. The viewtv needs greater processing power to fix this issue. -viewtv comes with only one tuner so you cannot channel surf and record a program at the same time. (at least i haven't figured out how to do this yet. ) for me this is huge. I will probably eventually upgrade to a more expensive dvr in the future to a device that can record multiple programs at the same time. If this is an issue for you, this viewtv isn't for you. -(for those new cable cutters:) in general, tv broadcasters are only required to display future programing 12 hours in advance in most cases. You have to go online to get the tv schedule for the week and know what day and time to record. Viewtv will display the schedule 12 hrs in advance only. This isn't viewtv's fault, i just thought people should know. -this box is not tivo! i am spoiled when it comes to recording programs, i liked being able to ask my dvr to find a show by name and easily schedule a recording. Viewtv does not do that. Viewtv dvr is more akin to an old vcr, (for those old enough to remember those). I must admit i do miss that feature. It makes recording shows so much easier. -the viewtv does not label your programs once they are recorded on your external hard drive, it only labels recorded programs using the channel (cbs, nbc, etc. And the time and date recorded. You can rename shows afterward but its kind of a pain to have to keep a notepad by your couch to keep tabs on this.

I purchased this viewtv at 163 atsc digital converter box because they looked so convenient. I have bought similar products before and have never been satisfied. I am so pleased with this purchase i made because the product exceeded my expectations. It performs very well and is constructed with quality materials. I will be definitely buying more in the future and will also recommend friends and family to buy this product. It has only been a few days since i use it but so far i do not have any complaints. The product was also very well packaged which protected it from shipping and handling damages.

This is an amazing digital converter and recorder with lots of output options. I ordered a different converter first for the same price, and it didn't work at all. I tried all of my antennas and tvs with it. A light on the front just blinked and blinked and the box didn't connect to anything successfully. I had to return it. This converter worked immediately when i hooked it up. It is currently connecting a digital antenna to a very old television. The picture is even better than when i had cable. This digital converter also has a program guide that shows you what is on each channel and what is coming up, which is amazing to me! it makes me want to get one for all of my tvs with digital antennas now. It also has a recording feature. All you have to do is click on a program in the guide to schedule a recording. It's a small box. You can tell the box and the remote are well-constructed. The output options provide ways to connect to even the most up-to-date devices with hdmi, and it comes with an hdmi cable. The first one i purchased did not. I couldn't be more pleased with this converter's performance and highly recommend it to those who are looking to cut the cord!

Probably the cheapest looking/feeling piece of electronic equipment i've ever seen. Possibly a fire hazard, it's always hot to the touch so be careful with it. The remote works fine, and the menus are surprisingly easy to navigate. . If you want to record stuff, shove a usb memory stick in the slot and it should work. It wont include audio if you try to play programs recorded by the box on a computer for some strange reason. If you're handy with computers you may be able to fix this though. . The channel guide doesn't work one bit, so just pretend it's 1998 before that was a thing. . Instead of sequential numbers it will organize channels into confusing and seemingly arbitrary codes, regardless of original channel order. For example channel 29 became 28-2 and then 30 became 64-4. I can't make any sense of it, so i just copied them all down and taped the list to the back of the remote. . As an added bonus, you can frustrate yourself into fervor trying to use the remote to play the version of tetris this tv box inexplicably includes.

I haven't had much chance to use it, but so far i like it a lot. It is great for the basement tv (which is a mammoth 36" sony crt which is coming out of the basement in many pieces when it dies, and hopefully after i sell the house). . Dtv tuning is excellent! usb playback is quite good, but sometimes it grabs secondary audio tracks instead of the primary, and sometimes those audio tracks will only play through digital-out, not analog. There are a lot of menus to navigate with virtually no instructions to guide you through each one, but each is not overly-complicated. The instructions you do receive are printed tiny and somewhat haphazardly organized. Buttons on the remote perform strange functions, like "press hold to view fullscreen" - while the "hold" button seems to do nothing else. Why not label this button as "fullscreen" (or fs to save real estate)? but, once you read carefully and practice-practice-practice, it does do a very good job. . There is an option for software upgrade in the menus, but i cannot find a current version or a list of firmware versions on their website - or really any support section of their website. A downloadable pdf copy of the instructions (so you could search & zoom in! ) and a software update would likely solve every single problem i am having, which are not dealbreakers by any means. . There are also some hidden games in the menus. They are quite awkward with the remote, but well played, viewtv. Well played.

This is very nice converter box and has good sensitive tuner. I got this at good price with promotion code making it excellent value. . Tuning is good, shows signal strength and also pulls epg information very well. I was able to add an harddrive for recording and it works well with portable hdd. . Positives list:. 1. Very sensitive tuner :. Compared to all other tuners i have, lg tv tuner, boxee tv tuner, silicon dust hd homerun(2 units), pinnacle tv tuner, hauppuage wintv pvr, this is most sensitive and able to tune most channels, some i did not even know that exist. I bought this for theater room projector to watch live tv while other. 2. Very small unit: fits in very small places, behind tv etc. 3. Has pass thru output for rf. Means you can tune both this unit and tv connected to rf pass thru(there are few options there). 4. Able to pull full available epg information available for each channel. Simple info can show current program info, and upcoming program info also. 5. Shows signal strength and signal quality info which lets you position antenna for your fav channels. My lg tv is does this, but it is buried so deep, and i need to go into manual tuning mode and select channel and wait for few seconds to show that info. This unit it is much easier. . 6. There is no monthly fee to see the guides like some units. For me tv guide app in ipad shows all info i need. But this show todays epg for given channel. . Coming to issues:. . 1. Epg information is shows for current channel that is tuned. That means if you are in channel 13, you can only see epg information for channel 13. 2. Live tv pause is bit crude, it is lagging behind quite few seconds. When i click pause it takes a while to get into live record/pause mode and lags behind few second. This is not a problem with my lg tv(yes my lg tv has built in pvr function with a small hack). Not a problem with media center from hd homeruns. . 3. Remote is so, so, (not too bad). But not a problem as i use my logitech harmony. 4. Upscaling is below average. It has problems esp with reds. Some of the sd channels (sub channels of main channels) are transmitted in 480i, and this upscales to 1080i and reds look pretty bad with some tearing. But if this annoying i simply change output to 480i on those channel and let tv upscale that. . You might be wondering with all these negatives how it got 4 stars. The main purpose of this unit for me is live tv feed for my projector. That it serves well, but because of other pit falls, i gave 4 stars.

Works good. I am able to use it to record one show (using its own built in tuner) and watch another on my tv using its tuner. Just like the old vcrs did. The tuner is even better then the one in my current tv. I am happy with it and hopefully it will last for awhile.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

I. Debra, Bayern says

I bought this because i was dropping cable and wanted to take advantage of the free, hd broadcast stations in my area. I could have use my hd tv, as it has a built-in tuner (most do), but i wanted to use the personal video recorder (pvr) to occasionally record programs. As a tuner and pvr, this product works well. It produces a great picture and sound, and once you figure it out, it records to a usb flash drive perfectly. There are, however, a couple of "cons": 1) it only displays a 24-hour clock (military time) and there's no way of changing it. Normally, this isn't a problem, but if you want to set up a pvr recording in advance, you'll need to translate normal (12-hour) time to 24-hour time. 2) the user manual leaves a lot to be desired. It is poorly written and doesn't cover all functionality. (i'm a technical writer, so i know what a good user manual should look like. ) if you rely heavily on a manual, i would skip this product. If you're kind of "geeky" and are willing to try to figure things out on your own, this shouldn't be a problem. 3) the antenna power switch, which can be used with an amplified antenna to boost the signal, doesn't work. Although i can turn it on in the settings, it doesn't stay on. I contacted support and had already tried their "solution. " after some back-and-forth, they said they'd consider including the issue in the next firmware update. . Update 3/2/2016: i've had this for a few weeks and have become disenchanted with it. So much so, that i completely disconnected it. There were a few local channels i watched regularly on cable that i could not receive via ota using this product, even after moving my antenna every place possible. On a whim, i connected the antenna directly to my tv and they all came in perfectly. I weighed being able to watch the channels i want against having a pvr and the reception of all available channels won.

Like so many that have posted herein, the at-163 is a great unit that does so much. When it works. It has a good strong tuner and the on-screen information lists actual channel numbers, ie 3-1 or 12-1. There are other tuners such as the one i just bought (another manufacturer's similar type unit, the iview-3200stb), but that one doesn't show actual channel numbers & has a weaker tuner (same antenna & conditions but my local channel 6-1 wasn't strong enough for the same stable picture). I bought a total of two at-163 models. One stopped working within the warranty and they sent me another. Now the other one has stopped working after the 90 day warranty (a total of 2 out of 3 have stopped working). No power, no lights, nothing, just dead! i only have one left working, only because it has rarely been plugged in! when plugged in, all of these always were plugged into a surge protector. I believe someone mentioned the problem is in the power source section on theirs and i think it's the same here. It's as though it is designed to fail quickly. I question what i should do next, as the competitor's similar unit i mention above doesn't show actual channel numbers and doesn't pick up stations good enough. There are some that claim theirs is still working; perhaps on the marginal cress of dying too, but may not be worth the risk. . *final update (2017-09-12)*: they did send me a replacement, i choose the at-300 option. Now i have two working units which i'll either keep unplugged or plugged into a surge protector with an on/off switch, switched off when not in use. Just plug in & turn on; it saves all scanned channels and settings. The at-300 is the answer here because the power source is not inside, but outside on the converter plug (outputs 5 volts at 1500 ma), so if that goes bad, the whole unit won't be junk, just replace that part. This model also does have the onscreen tv display of the actual channel (say 6-1); note that on the box, it displays the channel number using a zero in lieu of a dash, thus 0601 (6-1) or 1201 (12-1) but becomes the clock time display when the box is off. Also has a built in antenna amplifier, and both a signal strength and signal quality meter for when fine tuning in the antenna direction! the tuner is a good tuner that really pulls in the stations, although that's more dependent on the antenna and your location/direction to the tv broadcast transmission towers. Supports connecting up to a 2 tb usb hard drive (limit) or a usb thumb drive for recording stuff and playing back, including pictures, other movie formats, and music (mp3 & acc) that's on your drive.

Bought this to see if i could improve my over the air recording quality because i was at the max with my indoor antenna. (i am about 25 miles from the tower cluster. ) it does have better reception. I still have it running thru my toshiba dvr though because the color / tint / etc were pretty horrid with this box. So i have not yet tried to use the usb to record programs. The menu is not intuitive, but no worse than the zinwell box this replaced. Biggest problem - there is no function to manually set the date and time! seriously. You can pick the time zone and whether you use daylight savings time. But you can't it what year it is! so it doesn't know the day of the week for ongoing channel change commands. Today apparently was a saturday as nothing switched on. You need to to go the recording setup every day and check that the commands are set to start the next day.

Update 10/12/2015 more bad news: series recording set to repeat daily sets the next recording to 6 days out, wtf? . . I fooled the system into dealing with the "recording after midnight" bug (never stops) by setting two recordings. Like 23:35-23:59 and 00:00-00:37. But you miss a minute this way. Changed to two stars. . Original review:. . Not bad for the price, but get ready to struggle lot to figure out how to operate it without accurate instructions. It does receive and use the qam in-the-clear (broadcast networks) stations on the verizon fios network in the tampa area. You can delete the unwanted channels (scrambled) after auto-learning them all but it is tedious. It took me about 30 minutes of clicking to get all the ones off i didn't want (scrambled or blank). The manual says to use the "04" sequence to specify deletion, but just the "4" key worked for me, so many fewer keystrokes were required. . Problems:. Wont stop recording if the recording period spans midnight. This happens with the tonight shows, of course (23:37 to 00:35). The result is that the next day, it is still recording and the file is huge in size. The box asks you if you want to exit recording. If you left it for longer it would fill up your drive easily. . No guide for the qam channels on fios. . You can rename the channels to something sensible like "cbs" but i find that the box sometimes renames it back to the original gibberish numbers the next time it's started. This only happens for some channels, don't know why.

What i was looking for is a replacement for a failing tuner in my visio. Also, my dvr's video output seems to die when it warms up, so is this a good way to go? i like the hd output to hdmi, but there are black noise lines that seem to go away after 10ish minutes. When the channel is changed it shows the text to what's playing (and the next thing), sometimes it seems to 'loose it's mind' while i'm watching and redisplays the channel info. It displays everything in military time, i haven't figured out how to change that (maybe i should read the manual). I've recorded a few shows to a couple of flash drives. Recording at hd resolution seems to work fine, but watching it back, there are stalls in the video, enough to where it becomes very annoying. It records in a format that can be played on a computer, but even after copying the show to a fast harddrive, it stills stalls a lot, so there is something to how it is being recorded messing it up (it doesn't skip time though). When it records it splits the recording to another file. This causes a problem on playback, after the 2nd file is playing, fast forward controls stop working, i couldn't fast forward across the file split either. Reducing the resolution to 480i helped lessening the playback stalls (and the picture still looks better than ntsc), but these recording / playback problems still remain. From my technical point of view, the unit seems to have the hardware in order, but the software group rushed this product out the door. The conclusion is, it works well enough to use, but keep expectations low.

First of all i have to say that i am using this with an over the air antenna going to a samsung smart hdtv. I can't say how this would perform with an older analog tv. For my setup it works great. The picture through the built-in tuner is every bit as good as my tv set alone. I am using a splitter without any degradation of the signal. This way i can record one channel while watching another. One reviewer described using loop through to accomplish this, but i think that only applies if you are using an analog tv. I looked all over the back and sides of the unit for the usb port and thought it was missing before i noticed it on the front which really is a more convenient place. I managed to locate a 128 gig flash drive at walmart for a little over $30. 00 which i am using for storage of video files. If you use ntfs format on the drive make sure it is formatted with this unit. I tried one that had been formatted on my computer which would not work when it was plugged in. I then reformatted it while it was plugged in and it worked. Some of the terminology can be a little confusing. I had some difficulty figuring out how to schedule a recording. Apparently the term used for scheduling is booking. To schedule a recording it is necessary to bring up the program guide with the epg button. You will then see an icon along the bottom of the screen that indicates that you need to punch ok to book. You will then get a screen where you can enter the necessary information for your recording. If you use the exit button after you get this screen it will show what has been scheduled. The unit records in mts format but will play other formats. I had an mpg file on another flash drive which i tried and had no trouble playing it. I must say i have not tried other formats. Overall i am very pleased with the performance of the unit. So far, so good. If anything changes i will update my review. . Update: sorry to say i have to revise my review. Although the tuner is excellent, the record function leaves a lot to be desired. I tried recording with my flash drive formatted in both ntfs and fat32. Playback of the recorded file in both formats was totally unsatisfactory. Picture was pixellated and dropped in places as well as sound sometimes not being in sync with the video. Because of this i am dropping it to two stars and plan to return the unit for a refund.

It works to replace cable and record broadcast shows. The controls are a little confusing and i've had problems with the time-slip function returning to standard time in the middle of the delay process. The channel guide could be better designed instead of having to select each channel to view upcomming programming.

I received the unit fairly quickly; however, i wasn't able to use the remote. I did manage to configure the unit using the buttons on the front of the unit, so i assumed it was a bad remote. Customer service was nice and very polite, and promptly sent a new remote after i convinced them it wasn't the batteries. Unfortunately, i didn't bother to check out the new remote when it arrived. It didn't work either, so i assume it's the converter box that has the problem. For this amount of money, i really don't want to hassle with packing it back up, and draging it to the post office, and paying to ship it back. I wanted it for the purpose of recording off the air, which i assume i can still do using the buttons on the front of the box. It just won't be as convient as using the remote.

Mine lasted just over 3 years. It was used to record the local news broadcast in program mode. Usb storage was on a passport travel drive. Because of a serious health issue, i neglected it for 2 or 3 months and the capacity of the usb device was used up. The viewtv device began to work intermittently and will no longer turn on. I ordered another one like it because i am used to it and reviews lead me to believe that the others are no better.

Where do i start? . As a tuner, it worked just fine. Seemed better tuner than my samsung tv. As a pvr, really bad - record daily means today and then again in 6 days? fast forwarding caused the whole box to crash, had to reboot the system. This happened a few times. Once during a time-shift recording when the whole recording was lost and i missed the end of a football game? ! ? . Remote navigation is totally messed up, buttons don't make sense what so ever. Giving it 2 stars just because the tuner actually works ok. . I returned the unit after one week and purchased "mediasonic homeworx hw220stb digital converter box with karaoke, tv recording, and media player function" instead. It was almost the same price, the software seemed almost identical but it did not have any of the problems that viewtv had! fast forwarding is just fine, daily recording works, remote buttons actually make sense!

E. Garner, Mississippi says

I have yet to use the dvr function, of which i will be updating this review once i do, but the unit operates well. It makes better use of my hd antenna than what my bravia does. It produces a clearer signal, picks up more channels, and better sound. My only dislike about this unit is that the remote has an absolutely pathetic broadcast inspite of the fact the buttons and easy to locate and soft. Also, the unit picks up over the air paid channels. While this may be a plus for some but not for me. I mention this as a negative point for the machine only because you can delete all free channels once and streamline your viewing pleasure. However, the paid channels will return to your menu every time you shut the unit down. This may be a minor inconvenience but an annoying inconvenience none the less. If i was interested in paying for tv i would go out and pay for tv. The reason i watch over the air is the fact i don't want to have someone shoving a paid subscription for anything in my face.

N. Adrienne, Coventry

This is a scam. In 2013 i bought 2 mediasonic homeworks converter boxes. This may say viewtv and have a different splash page when it turns on but it's nearly identical to the mediasonic right down to the exact same smiley face you get when it saves the channels after a channel scan. It has the same problems as well. It gets a weaker signal than my tv does for each channel. The audio gets farther and farther behind the video the more you change channels so you have to power off and back on again and it's still a little off. The audio also gets lower sometimes so that you also have to power off and back on to get it back to the proper level. I just hooked it up so i haven't recorded anything yet but no doubt since it's identical to the awful mediasonic, it won't record every show you set it to record either, especially if those shows are back to back. . Before the people that sell this garbage box come here with their aliases disputing my word and saying it's perfect in every way, last time i had a box i had a vizio tv and toshiba tv as well as 3 different antennas in the time i used the box. I have only a single antenna now different from those previous 3, a 4th antenna, and a different tv too. That makes 4 antennas and 3 tv's and these boxes didn't/don't work on any of them with the best wires hooked up as well so they can reply saying it's my ignorance as if i haven't tried everything all they want, the box doesn't work properly. It's that simple. Yet another illegally advertised purely lied about piece of garbage electronic device that neither political party nor law enforcement does anything about because false advertising is good for the economy. Thievery is good for the economy. They realize some people have no choice but use converter boxes and therefore aren't going to return it so they lie their behinds off to get you to buy one. Online store also knows almost all the electronics sold on their site don't do what they say they will do but what do they care? they get a cut of the robbery proceeds. It's a great scam this rip-off flea market online store here. Put me in charge and i'd be one of the richest men alive too. It's easy to make huge profits if you're stealing from people, huh? . . This starts an addition to my above first written review. I forgot that the box comes set on loopthrough, meaning it wouldn't work on my analog tv and could only be changed on my other tv, which is an hdtv. It will work on all settings on the hdtv. How stupid is that? many people for years have bought this specifically for analog tv's hence the description analog to digital converter on these pages and yet the factory setting can't be changed by old tv's. What exactly do they think you're going to do if you don't have an hdtv but only old tv's? this is yet again proof that they are only interested in getting your money any way possible and don't really care if it does anything they say it can do because a 5 year old would know factory settings should be set to work on old tv's if it works no matter what on new tv's. Don't buy this for any other reason than recording tv and know that even that isn't going to work properly. You have been warned.

R. Guest, Telford and Wrekin says

After talking with tech support they sent me an updated firmware file that once loaded fixed all the recording issues i was having. Still not the best but does what i ask it to do. I use a 1tb portable hard drive to record stuff and every now and then the recording will fail to start so i will miss out. Wish there was something better but until i find it this will have to do.

G. Sandra, Devon

I bought this in july, 2015, and returned it within the week it arrived. I wanted to record late-night programs, and i hoped that other reviewers' complaints about the recorder "hanging up, or freezing" after fast-forwarding were anomalies. The same issues happened on mine. The picture and all cotrols always freeze up after fast-forwarding or reversing when playing a recording, and after waiting from around one minute to five minutes, will sometimes unfreeze. And other times not - meaning the unit must be unplugged from the power strip behind the tv. If the controls and picture do unfreeze, playback must be exited and re-entered to access the recorded program and begin playback from the beginning, since fast-forwarding will only repeat the freeze up. I used a 32 gb flashdrive and have an hd tv. (the first time i played a recorded show, the unit froze up right at the beginning, before i had a chance to use fast-forward or reverse, but this happened only once). . Pro - the converter works. The broadcast picture is great. The epg info is more detailed than on my samsung tv. . Con - the playback of the recording function only works if fast-forward and reverse are not used. . Conclusion: you get one half of the potential function from this unit - the converter. Forget about recording, unless you are willing to watch every recording from beginning to end with no fast-forward or reverse. Even then, you may experience a frozen picture and controls.

I've gone through two of these in the last 6 months, both for the same reason. This product is basically the same as a small rca "digital tv converter + recorder" that they sell at walmart, with two big differences:. . 1. This device has its own internal power supply ( rca version has a an external brick ). 2. This device is bigger and has a metal jacket with usb on the front. . The real issue i think is that the internal power supply fries quite easily. Opening up my two failed units the power supply section of the board shows the recitifier doides and capacitor melted down in a nice blackish gunk. Probably the cap, but could be the diodes. In any case, the rca model will not fail for the same reason, and may be easier to replace just the brick if it does. . Aside from the likely blowout of the supply at some point, you will enjoy a pretty decent product.

I really wanted to like this pvr, but the problems are just too great to over come the positives. My unit has software version mar 19 2015-12:00:58-v2 & i have used the unit for 1 month. . If you are just looking for an hdtv tuner to connect to an old analog tv , or even to act as a tuner for a projector, then this unit may fit the bill. The tuner works as well as the tuner in any of my hdtv's and the picture quality as delivered by the hdmi interface is very nice. . Unfortunately i was hoping to use this device as a low cost dvr. The unit does have a reasonable recording interface and a built in electronic program guide epg, and it does successfully record programs to an attached thumb drive or other spinning disk, but it has many drawbacks. . 1. Programmed recordings that are scheduled to record daily, will record the first scheduled day/time, but will then reschedule themselves for 5 days in the future rather than the next day. 2. Programmed recordings that are scheduled to record weekly, will record the first scheduled day/time but will then reschedule themselves for 12 days in the future. . Items 1 and 2 require you to continuously edit your recording dates to put them back on track. . 3. When playing back a recording, the unit will often freeze up completely requiring a power cycle to recover. This one will drive you crazy. It happens most often when you attempt to fast forward, pause and resume, etc. Usually, i resort to removing the thumb drive and playing it back on a computer using either media center or vlc. They can also be played back on an android device as long as the android device supports the file system type of your thumb drive. (fat32 or ntfs). . 4. When you try to manually schedule a recording for a channel greater than 25-2 you cannot select the channel. Instead, the value will. Return to 24-1 and cannot be advance beyond 25-2. The only way i found to program a recording for a higher channel is to tune the viewtv to the desired channel, select the epg, and choose. To record one of the programs listed for that channel. You can then edit the date/time while leaving the channel number set. This is a minor problem, but points out the overall low quality of the software load on this device. . I have tried to locate a new firmware revision, but have not had any luck. . I am done with this frustrating little box. I returned the first unit to online store due to the locking up problem assuming that there must be something wrong with it, but unfortunately the second unit has the same problem.

I bought this earlier in the year but just got around to setting it up, well trying to anyway. After plugging in the cords i get the screen to select the language but the remote doesn't work. I thought it must be the batteries and tried several packs but the remote doesn't show any life. I do not recommend this product as it doesn't work so i'd go with a different brand. . Eta: the company shipped me a new remote control so hopefully this one works.

This tuner works alright. The menu/channel search feature works well and it's pretty intuitive. However the receiver in this unit is not very sensitive. I purchased this in attempts to have a few people over and watch the oscars on my projector setup. I watched it for hours without any issue, but when the show began things got choppy. At first i faulted my antenna setup as i recently split it from 2 tvs to 4 and was sure the issue was signal related. I went to check every other tv in the house (2 samsung and 1 jvc) and saw they were showing maximum signal strength, but this tuner was showing maybe 75%. I swapped the coax run to another, same results. I also swapped to a different port on the splitter, no change. It was working fine on other channels, just not my abc affiliate. The only thing i could deduce from this is the receiver in this unit just needs more incoming signal quality. I'd only recommend this unit if you live in a dense urban area that has only the strongest signal quality available. If you do, it'll probably work. All in all, i'm keeping it, as for the $35 price point it's a decent little unit and at least i can get some broadcast tv on my projector with it. I plan on moving my antenna outside and higher, hopefully that'll resolve this issue.

Firstly the software is very difficult to figure out and not very intuitive or user friendly, but it's the cheapest option when it comes to recording ota hd broadcasts so i thought i'd try it out. I am recording off a very nice digital antenna mounted high on my vaulted ceiling. I am also using a 64 gig 3. 0 xtreme flash drive. My intention was to use this device to record sports broadcasts in hd. . The signal from my antenna is generally great on the main channels. Rarely are there any issues with the broadcasts themselves and i can watch them live with no issue. However on every channel there are times when the signal fluctuates a bit. It rarely messes with the actual picture but there are times when the signal is a bit weak on certain channels. No big deal if you are watching the broadcast live as nothing changes, however that fluctuation proved too much for this device. The recording would simply stop if the broadcast strength got low at any time. Very annoying and inconvenient, and certainly did not allow for me to set the recording and then spend time doing other things. I tried about 5 times to record a full football game and it never recorded the entire broadcast because of issues with signal strength. Maybe it would work if you never experienced any variation in signal, but that's never the case with ota antennas. . The entire system proved to be extremely cumbersome and inconvenient because of how temperamental the device was. In my opinion this is not a good option for recording sporting events or any long broadcast. Might work for 30 minute shows as long as the signal holds out.

So, we tried this little box as a otc dvr/pvr. It hooked up just fine to our hdtv, which already has a digital tuner. It was able to pick up the same channels that our hdtv's tuner was able to. We have a long-range rca antenna on our roof mounted to the old dish equipment. The problem with the viewtv at-163 box was the playback features for recording ota shows. We hooked a wd 1tb external hard drive to the box. No problem with plugging the wd in and instantly start recording. The playback was horrible. The viewtv box would freeze up when we would attempt to fast-forward and/or hit the "play" button after skipping through commercials. It did this continuously while trying to watch a recorded tv show. So, this very inexpensive little box was a no go for us. . Also, the viewtv was slow to start up, and there was some lag time when loading the recorded content. But the quality of the recorded content was very good (probably due to the speed of the wd 1tb hard drive). . We were never able to figure out how to use the "loop-through" mode, which is suppose to allow you to record on the box while watch something else on the tv's tuner, to my understanding. A splitter at the cable might of been a better option for that.

Well made unit, all metal construction with rubber feet on bottom. Very nice remote, large with nice well labeled buttons. Rca jacks on back accommodate older tv sets. Hdmi output for new hdtv's. Software is rather hard to setup options for someone unfamiliar with this type of unit. I was able to auto tune quite a few local channels 2-13 on my cable connection, in hd. Beautiful picture on my samsung hdtv. My reason for not giving 5 stars is i could not record any program more than 1 hr without problems with siezeup of recorder needing power reset to clear. Also problems with playback. Tried several different memory sticks usb hard drives. I could not get a 3" usb powered hard drive to work at all. Only a external powered large usb backup drive worked, but not reliably. I suspect unit needs firmware & soft ware updates. I have not been able to get updated files yet. I recommend this unit for someone that wants to eliminate cable co. Set top box rental on basic cable connection. With updates this is a nice unit.

Just got my questions to support answered. First the unit works as it should. It has a decent tuner does support external hdd, doesn't have a brick but a regular power connector. The remote works well controlling the unit. Having said all that, in my opinion, this unit has one major flaw. The program guide is not what i think a program guide should be. It has a function to see all the installed channels and to page through them and choose one. Unless you know exactly what the channel initials mean it is kinda useless. If you already know the channel info just type the number in on the remote. When you choose a channel to watch it does so without too much delay, and once your on a specific channel it shows you what is on for the next 12 hrs (in my location). It has a record function, so if your watching something and you want to record it you can. For me i find this also kinda useless because, their is no weekly program guide. So you can't plan to record anything except in a specific channel within a 12 hr time frame. If your looking for a tuner that displays a channel this will do that. If your looking to replace your dtv dvr, it will record but without a weekly program guide it will be difficult. Other reviews have had doa's and broken units. Mine is fine so far and yes remove the plastic protector on the unit to let the heat out. Great price if you can live with the short comings of the limited guide.

Edited 6/15/17: i've dropped my rating to two stars simply because it doesn't last. The power supply is built into the unit and fails, taking the unit down with it when it goes. When it works, it's good and does what it says, but when the power supply melts, there's no way to save the unit. At the low price, it's pretty easy to replace, but that's not the point. I'm currently trying the rca unit from wal mart that has an external power supply. Software is nearly identical, but their remote layout is pretty bad. But if the rca unit lasts longer than a year we're ahead. The original review is below, and i originally gave the viewtv box 4 stars, but i won't be buying another one based on power supply melt-downs. . If you want something to record digital over-the-air tv programs, this is it. We bought it along with a 128gb usb flash drive and it holds more programs than we've ever had on there at one time. Playback quality is very good (as good as the original broadcasts) and the remote control buttons are well laid out and easy to use. It only gets 4 stars, however, because if you bump the usb flash drive even the least little bit or if the converter box loses power, you have to re-format the flash drive and you lose all the programs saved up to that point. How sensitive? we dust around the unit so we don't even brush against the flash drive with a dusting cloth. . Having said that, i'm glad we bought it. We don't have tivo and once purchased, this is free and without any kind of monthly subscription fee. That didn't make sense seeing as how we dumped cable to get rid of those bills. I'd recommend this easily - just be careful with the dusting cloth. : )

The box by itself is great. I received more channels than i thought i could however, the remote control has been working off and on. When i first received the package, i was able to use the remote control to do a channel search but after that, nothing! . The remote would work every blue moon. Sometimes it wouldn't work for days at a time and sometimes it wouldn't work for weeks at a time. Yes, i have changed the batteries several times and with just doing that, the problem could not be resolved. I admit on my end that i did not try to contact anyone about this problem because i simple did not feel like having to go through the process. Look at it from my stand point, when you order something online, you trust that they will send you your items in good working condition but in my case, that did not happen. Now as i write this, my remote control no longer works anymore. :(

This box is ok if you're not interested in having cable. We've gotten about 22 - in our area. It doesn't seem to work with inexpensive rabbit ear type antennas but if you have a durable quality antenna it would serve better. The channels didn't always come in clear if the weather was raining outside we would lose signal. Also when you turn off your television you have to reset the boxes so we leave the television on and turn off the boxes for some reason it jumps from our area. Aight it doesn't seem to work with inexpensive rabbit year type and tennis but if you have a durable quality antenna it would is better. Channels didn't always come in clear if the weather was raining outside we would lose signal. Also when you turn off your television you have to reset the boxes so we leave the television on turn off the boxes put some reason advance rom the a v or h d m i or whatever t v setting you use two connect your stations. I'm really not the type of person to send things back so i just kept them. I would recommend going with the are rca converter box. We have one and it works great east to use and program to the tv. Channels come on really clear and you can turn off the tv without having to reset the box. I use these boxes in the bedrooms of my residents in an assisted living facility. Some of the residents do not watch much tv so this is a good way to keep the cable cost down.

Ok where to begin. . . . . . . . First off , i didn't expect much from the unit and i just wanted to be able to record, pause fast forward, and rewind! all i can say is don't fast forward faster than 2x or the unit will freeze and you have to disconnect the power! second: the picture will just go out and i believe it's because of the hdmi cable or port! throw the provide hdmi cable in the garbage! i put one of my hdmi cables in there and it seems to have stopped , but if the port is messed up i can always run component cables to my tv from this box, which component cables "green, blue, and red cables" is the same thing as high definition at 1080p, but alot of people don't know that, and you may have to adjust color settings on tv if you use component, but it will look just like the hdmi! the the hdmi cable was to eliminate the five component cables into one single cable. . Giving this box some credit: this box does work pretty good and i can pause, i can record, rewind and fast forward but only fast forward at 2x speed , which is one click for fast forward. Another issue is this box doesn't have a internal clock, it reads the clock coming from your stations , which. . "me chuckling to myself" . . Is a mixed bag of times for each channel. . One channel is says it's 825, when it's really 855, which is a problem when you click "record this program that starts at 9 o'clock because it will be thirty mins into the program, so you have to do some math in order to record on time! . Let me break the times down: all the channel 4's are twenty eight min early, all the channel 9's are seven min fast, and all the channel 27's are two min fast. . . So as you can see there is a learning curve to this box, and don't give up! . Would i recommend? i don't know but i am happy with it . . It's 35 dollars and performs good for that price! . . Ps:four days in and doing ok, if you mess with menu settings over and over it will get buggy but after the setup it's working fine, i recommend!
