Review for zwave plus gold plated reliability

Price was $25.50. I've had two of these on my garage doors for a few months, and all was well until this morning, when i found one of them on the floor, with the body, cover, and battery separated. The included adhesive pad that holds the bracket to the door had given way. . Fortunately the sensor survived its travel through space and crash landing, and i've now remounted the brackets to the doors using flat-headed sheet metal screws, for which the brackets are pre-drilled. . I suspect the adhesive failed because it's turning cold now.

Foreword

It was very easy to setup with my vera system. The sensor worked fast without any problem. I now have my phone setup to get a notification when my garage door is open in case i forget and leave it open. I used the included double sided tape and have it situated on the door and it hasn't fallen off. I have a detached garage and it still gets signal in my apartment where my vera controller is. If you would like to see your garage status this is the perfect sensor for you! PROS
  • Works well with google home. Setting up for recognition can be tricky but following the directions as to when to install battery and when to hold button works great.
  • I have been happy with this device so far. I had been getting false positives of the door being opened, but i am thinking it had something to do with the range of the device. Since installing a zwave switch that doubles as a repeater closer to the garage door i have not seen any false positives. The battery life is still reporting 100% after a month or so of use. Overall, a solid product. I would give this 5 stars if i had not seen the false positives even though this could have been the result of my zwave network.
CONS
  • The item does not work with indigo software. Apparently a firmware update by ecolink broke this item. So if you use indigo gateway software don't buy this item. Indigo said it will be fixed in 7. 1 release that is months away. They told me 2 days after the 30 day return period was over. So i have a paper weight for now.
  • The product was great for about a season before i started having troubles. Now it will consistently trigger open and close events while the garage is closed. Suffice to say it's not reliable to use as part of my security grid.
  • Probably 90-95% accuracy at best. You will definitely have situations where it shows an incorrect reading. I think a better solution is to figure out a way to rig an open/close sensor.

zwave plus gold plated reliability Z-wave Plus Gold Plated Reliability Garage Door Tilt Sensor, White (TILT-ZWAVE2.5-ECO) (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

This was extremely easy to set up with smartthings. Just one tip: have smartthings ready to add the device when you insert the battery in the tilt sensor or you may have to reset it to factory default and try again. . If you insert the battery (don't put the cover on) and immediately tell smartthings to add the device it will work fine. . Alerts are very fast and seem to be reliable so far. Only time will tell.

Click to see NoticeZ Wave Plated Reliability Garage Tilt Zwave2 5 Eco (Surveilance Systems)"This sensor was smaller than i expected, which was a bonus! it was easy to link to my vera lite and i mounted it to the top panel on my garage door. It will show when the garage door is open or closed and will show an "armed" and "bypass" button. I named this device "auto-close" in vera. I have a scene created to auto-close the garage (using the evolve lfm-20 fixture module) after 5 minutes if this sensor shows the garage door is opened and armed. I use the "garage door" app in vera to open and close the garage and i use the "auto-close" device, which is this device, to arm the auto-close scene or bypass so i can leave it open if i like."

(0) Question: What kind of battery life is expected? thank you.

(1) Question: Will this work with simon xti ? will the controller recognize this sensor ?

Aeotec Range Extender 6, Z-Wave Plus repeater

Extended my z-wave net from the controller in the basement to first floor, effectively one story above and across the house. On the order of 40 feet or so. Performs exactly as designed.

You use z-wave to manage your smart home. You use range extender 6 to keep z-wave reliable. Aeotec's range extender 6 works seamlessly to amplify and repeat weak z-wave and z-wave plus signals. Simply plug it into a power socket, connect it to your z-wave network, and it automatically starts improving any poor z-wave signals that are in range. As it's custom desgined as a wireless signal booster, range extender 6 performs better than other z-wave devices that offer simply repeating; it amplifies the signal too. Designed to use z-wave plus, unlike previous editions range extender 6 can work with advanced z-wave features such as encryption and security devices such as door locks while remaining compatible with older versions of z-wave. It repeats signals 250% faster than other signal repeaters and can repeat z-wave signals up to 492 feet away when unobstructed. Range extender 6 is compatible with all certified z-wave gateways including samsung smartthings, fibaro, and mios vera.

Here is how i got this to work with the wink hub 2. Go to the wink app's main page. Tap on the hubs icon, tap on the picture of the hub you want to connect with. ( i have two). Tap on the three dots in the upper right corner of the app. Tap on the name of the hub you want to connect with. Under settings, tap on z-wave controls. Make sure your extender is plugged in and the red light is flashing. (if it is solid red hold the button for about 20 seconds. It should start to blink) tap on "inclusion mode" in the wink app. It should connect after a few seconds. Go back to the hubs section of the app and tap on the hub picture. All the attached products will be listed. This one shows up as an "unknown device" tap the slider to turn it on.

- E. McCarthyExcellent repeater and a nice upgrade from the previous version. Latest gen5 z-wave. Supports z-wave beaming technology? yes. Supports z-wave network security? yes. Supports z-wave aes-128 security? yes. Provided significant stability to my z-wave network. Fixed my problem where my primary and 2 secondary controllers were having communication issues.

Works great. Much improved over the previous model which failed - probably from a power surge. Sets up and you know it is on the z-wave network.

The most versatile device in the samsung smartthings family, this sleek zigbee device acts as a movement, vibration, orientation and temperature sensor all in one. It requires the smartthings hub. Smartthings offers a one-year limited warranty on this product. Troubleshooting steps: if your device doesn t connect after removing the "remove to pair" tab, hold the connect button while inserting the battery. Release the button when the led is lit. The led will blink blue while attempting to connect. Then select connect new device in the smartthings app. Note: check user manual in technical specification before use.

Samsung Smartthings Multipurpose Sensor (f mlt us 2) FAQ.

This thing is great, it's simple to install and the bracket is pretty easy. I'm using it with a wink hub and some of the sensors don't carry over, but for the price these are fantastic even limited. (i bought it knowing what i needed worked with wink) -Notice from Z. Anonymous, California

I use unit to detect possible theft of one of my 12 volt powered assets from backyard. I mounted sensor magnet section on velcro. I put hole in the magnet section and glued a line to it. That line is attached to ground. Sensor is under asset where no one can see it. Move my asset and the magnet is pulled away and i get an alarm. Enough movement and i will also get a movement alarm. You could mount sensor in a hidden place to fall over if your asset is moved too much and not need line to ground to pull magnet and activate sensor. . ! problem was button battery does not last long. . I pulled sensor apart and soldered wires to + & - . Ran them to a 'drok waterproof dc buck converter voltage regulator 8-22v to 1-15v 5v 12v 3a adjustable output power supply transformer'. Set it to 3 volts and connected sensor to assets battery that has a small solar panel to keep it topped up. I now have a reliable power supply to run the sensor without need for 'button' battery changes. (will work with other power sources with right adaptor) i have one off 120 volt to 3 volt adaptor in attic to control attic fans via st. . Added sensor to alarm for when away and also set up a notification any time for movement or 'open' situation to text me. Someone might be brazen to try during night when i am home asleep.

- M. Edna*update*. I have noticed the battery life of the open/close sensors are not as good as the standard motion sensors by smartthings. Could be because my door sensors are exposed to outdoor temps that my indoor motion sensors do not see. These sensors activate much less than our common motion sensors around the house so that's why it surprises me that the batteries would be at 80% now. All in all they still work as expected and i'm happy with them. . I love these so far. I use them on the front and backdoor of the house. They monitor open/close, acceleration, vibration and temp. I have routines setup in the smartthings app for turning on all lights and notifying me via push notification on my phone for when these sensors are triggered. These, along with smartthings motion sensors have allowed me to add a level of security to our home. The addition of a cam and a siren device would complete it. And maybe a few more of these multipurpose sensors for windows.

I think this is the best type of sensor because you can use it for many different things.

Samsung SmartThings Smart Home Hub

After having vera lite for a couple of years, this hub is superior then veralite and easy to setup and use. I was able to move everything i had on vera to smartthing with a couple of problems, but they were easy to resolve using the community blog. . The only problems i would see issue with is using the 4 scene/zone wall controller from leviton without using the leviton programming tool. . I'm only 1 month in and so far the response of the hub is very fast. I have about 70+ devices (mixed brand of z-wave devices, from cheap to expensive) connected to the hub and everything works accordingly. To move all the devices and create routines/automation schedules from vera to smarthings, it took entire weekend. Afterwards i have been adding addition features i did not have on vera yet, such as alexa, harmony, geofencing (was on vera but didn't work correctly for me), and cameras (arlo). . Overall i'm very happy with the product!

Smartthings lets you easily control, monitor, and secure your home from anywhere in the world. The heart of your smart home, the samsung smartthings hub will connect all of your different smart locks, lights, outlets, thermostats, and more and let you control them from the free smartthings app. Receive notifications about what's happening in and around your home and use your smartphone to remotely control your home's security, energy usage, lighting, and more. Since smartthings is compatible with a wide variety of smart devices from different companies, once you have the smartthings hub and the free app for ios, android, or windows, you can add as many additional smartthings sensors or other popular z-wave, zigbee, or internet-connected products as you want to enhance your connected home. The samsung smartthings hub works in the us and canada. If the honeywell programmable thermostat was not detected, you may need to reset the device through a z-wave exclusion before it can successfully connect with the smartthings hub. To do so in the smartthings mobile app: 1. Tap the menu 2. Tap the hub 3. Tap z-wave utilities 4. Tap general device exclusion 5. When prompted: 1. Press the system button on the left side of the thermostat's display 2. Press and hold the blank center button until the display changes 3. The first set of numbers/arrows is the "function" section - scroll until you find "rf10" 4. The second set of numbers/arrows is the "setting" section - select 0 5. Press done in the lower left corner to save and exit after the app indicates that the device was successfully removed from smartthings, follow the first set of instructions above to connect the honeywell programmable thermostat. Note: please reference user guide and specification sheet below under 'technical specifications' for instructions on how to add devices and troubleshoot connectivity issues

Samsung Smartthings Smart Home Hub (f hub us 2) FAQ.

I recently purchased this in november 2016 with the soul purpose of integrating my new online store echo with it to voice control my house. My current set includes: online store echo in the kitchen, an online store dot in the playroom, an online store dot in our master bedroom, approaching 30 different ge zwave and zwave+ light switches/dimmers and add on switches (more on that later) and 3 hue colored light bulbs (more on that later, as well). Goods:. 1. Pretty easy installation of the hub and app. 2. Easy recognition of newly installed z-wave devices. 3. Very active community board with multiple "how-to's" and faqs on the smartthing website to help with products. . Bad:. 1. The hub is moderately priced, but buying devices to integrate into the hub is dang expensive. 2. Occasionally, does not always do what it is meant to do. 3. Hub has to be plugged directly into the router. . Download the app (i have an iphone 5). Plug in the hub and directly connect the hub to the router. This means that the hub has to be in close proximity of the router (i have the latest generation of apple's airport, which hasn't changed in 5+ years). Follow the instructions on the app and you're up and running! i had no issues. . Integration goes like this: purchase ge zwave light switch, which runs between $35 an $40 a pop! there may be cheaper ones, but not by much. (i recommend staying with the same brand throughout your house. It makes it easier to trouble shoot later on. ) multiply that by how many switches you have in your house! but, you can do this one switch at a time. No need to do all of them all at once. Turn off breaker. Pull out old single switch. Connect the black line wire to the line connector on the zwave switch (this is the power coming into the switch box). Connect the black load wire to the load connector on the new switch (this is the black wire coming from the light to power it). Now, these switches need to be connected to the white neutral wire that is crumbled up in the back of the switch box. These switches come with a pliable extra white wire. Wire nut the whites together. Turn on the breaker and the blue led light comes on that's on the switch. Test the switch manually to make sure that you can turn on and off the light. If the blue lights not on, you probably have the black wires switched. Open the app, tap on "add a thing", press up on the switch and the hub recognizes the new switch. Rename it and you're set. . Sounds complicated, but the hardwiring the switch is more complicated than integrating the new switch with the hub. With the app, i have it set so when both my phone and my wife's phone break connection with our home wi-if, smartthings turns off everything. (have to always remember to remind the babysitter! ). . Online store echo has it's own app that needs to be integrated, but smartthings has step by step instructions on that. Had no problem. Now i say, "alexa, turn off living room lights" and all the lights in the living room turn off. Awesome! . . The only problem i have had is with 3 way switches. This is where there are 2 or more switches doing the same light. When you pull out the switch on these bad boys, you'll be met with black, white and red wires. These are wired differently than normal 3 way switches. The way it is suppose to work is that there is one main zwave switch and an add on switch (which has no receiver). When you press the add on switch, it's suppose to turn off the lights and send a signal to the main switch, to send a signal to the hub, so that it registers as on/off on the app. I've had some of the newer zwave+ switches that do not register on the app. I. E. , i turn off the light with the add on switch, but the app still says the light is on. Not a big deal, but it is annoying. This has only happened on the newer ge 14xxx zwave switches with the older 12xxx add on switches. . Besides this issue, everything has worked flawlessly. Other issues that have appeared are due to my figuring out complex 3 way switches that power multiple different lights. Overall, i would recommend this to anyone interested in an easy entry into home automation! -Notice from J. Noguera, Virginia

I waited quite a while before jumping into an iot environment, and only did it at a "discounted" price. I believed after a small amount of research that st seemed like a viable solution, and flexible enough. . After about 2-3 weeks with the device, and some on/off network devices to pair with it- i honestly think it is by far the best value for such a system. At this point, i've yet to suffer any serious outages. . There is some awesome flexibility to be offered when combining this with emulated hue bridges and such.

- . WilsonStarted with hub v1 and now on v2. Everything is working great. I wish they has a better system for upgrading to the new hub besides doing everything all over again but i got it done and all is working. I do notice a faster response time to triggers and i like the idea of having more processes being controlled locally instead of in the cloud. The battery back up is cool just not really part of my system now. If the lights go out i wont need smartthings to turn them on for me (no power). Besides that with the back friday discount i could not find a reason not to upgrade.

Migrated from first generation to this (2nd gen). Old hub almost caused me to have a aneurysm trying to keep everything working reliably. Got fed up and figured i'd give smart things another chance, as most first gen products have many design flaws and bugs to work out. Was not able to exclude aoetec products during the migration (kept getting errors) and since they were poorly designed by not allowing a factory reset to allow them to re-pair with a new hub that was $200 down the tube. Going with smart things products as they allow for this contingency. Everything works quite well, no more constantly resetting hub, router, etc. So far this is win.

Aeotec Z Wave Strobe Alerts Battery (zw080) FAQ.

It seems to work with samsung smartthings but when it's just sitting in the app it shows "unavailable" as a status. This seems to be incorrect because if i test it, suddenly it works. -Notice from V. Stacey, Minnesota

Unit is about the size of a two outlet wall plate. When the alarm is active, the white leds kind of circle around and are half-way bright. Good for a visual indicator, but that's about it. The alarm is about the same decibels as a smoke alarm. So you can hear it outside the house, but you'd have to be listening for it. 5 star unit for what it's marketed as. I give it a 4 star though because the battery is non-replaceable. Which means that it'll go bad at some point making the battery backup non-repairable when it goes through its normal lifetime.

- A. McCarthyI purchased this to connect to my smartthings home automation hub so when the door sensor is armed and the door is open the aeon siren will sound. It was easy to connect to the smartthings hub and it is very loud, you will be woken up if this goes off in your house. Very pleased with the siren.

These would have been great. Small plug in with internal battery backup. The lynx security panel won't pair these to zwave and must use wired or rf siren so had to return

The F.A.Q. for z-wave plus gold plated reliability garage door tilt sensor, white tilt-zwave2.5-eco

No issues. Works perfectly. I did notice that the spec only has the low end working temperature range down to -5c (23f). Living in the northeast and in an unheated garage was certainly going to test this. This year's temp have been very cold. The low has gotten to -20c (-3f) outside. The garage probably hasn't gotten this cold as it is attached to the house but i was still concerned. You may want to consider this is installing it in a detached unheated garage in a cold climate. Regardless, it has worked perfectly.

A number of questions have been asked here.

I'm really pleased with this device. It paired easily to my vera lite z-wave controller and is easy to set up alerts when the garage door is open or closed. In my case, it's linked to a mimo lite z-wave dry contact bridge that is used to remotely open and close the garage door. . The two devices work well together. The tilt sensor is battery powered, so having the mimolite plugged-in module nearby helps expand and sustain the z-wave mesh network. . I've yet to install the app that more intuitively controls the garage door from the vera control panel or from my phone, but the basic functions are present and can be pretty quickly deciphered. . This is a must-have device for those of us who wonder if we remembered to close the garage door!

Works perfectly! purchased so i could create a notification in case the garage door had been left open. Paired easily with smartthings and just used double-sided tape to attach to top of garage door. It comes with a back plate that can be mounted first, then the device locks into place with an extra set screw to ensure it never falls of the back plate.

S. Janice, Lambeth says

The ecolink z-wave tilt sensor is an inexpensive z-wave sensor that is meant to be used to tell you the state of your garage door. I decided to try to use it to tell me when the mailbox has been opened and closed. . I installed it and it shows up in the sensors area of the mynexia. Com site. It was easy to enroll. The sensor shows up as a circle that is either brown or green. Green has a description that says active (door tilted) and brown has a description of reset (door vertical. ). . Three things make this product not very good for mailbox use:. . 1. My mailbox is all metal, thus the signal distance is lowered. . 2. The distance to the closest repeater is 30 feet. . 3. Ecolink built in a delay of two seconds so that if a strong wind or quick reversal of the door caused the tilt mechanism to move, it wouldn't be a false signal. My mail delivery person is very quick with opening and closing the mailbox door. . I did put it on my garage door as a test (already have the linear garage door actuator/sensor, so i wont need it) and it works as advertised for that application. . Back to online store it goes.

. Gilmore, Australian Capital Territory

Does the trick, mounted to my garage door with the 3m tape included. Yes a battery came with mine, so this was a ready to use product. Easy enough to register with my smartthings hub. Works as intended. Notes: obviously, this needs a certain degree of tilt, it's almost 60 degrees or more before it triggers, that could mean your garage would have to open 5-6 inches or more before it triggers. Note 2: if you are considering buying the smart garage controller, a device like this comes with that, so just know before you pick this up.

L. Elanor, Nord-Pas-de-Calais says

They are finally now offering zwave enabled garage door items. This ecolink is only a sensor, it only indicates if the garage door is up or down, which means you can trigger events say turn on the driveway lights for a set duration when the garage door goes up, but only after dusk and before dawn and conversely, you can set an event control to say "when the garage door closes, run a lights off command on the driveway lights. " pretty nifty! . . Now there is a nexia / zwave enabled garage door opener from linear, but be forewarned, if you are using a newer garage door opener with proprietary myq technology, the linear garage door controller will likely not work with these openers. A common brand with this issue is chamberlain.

N. Evelyn, Hounslow

It took me a while to get this unit to work correctly because a) my garage is a detached in the back yard of my house (60 ft away from the closest z-wave repeater) and b) the interior of my garage door has an aluminum fail insulation barrier on it. I cut a hole in the insulation and mounted it to the plastic door for a better, uninterrupted connection to the home's zwave repeaters. Once i did that, it had no problem connecting and telling me when the door was open. Really like having all this data on my phone - it's super handy.

P. Susana, Trafford says

Only does one thing which is to detect tilt, but it does it very well and has been 100% reliable on my garage door. Remains to be seen how it work when the cold weather comes but given it's simple design it should work well. Battery life has been good, likely will last at least a year if not more. Using it with smartthings system. Working well in spite of being furthest device from my hub, but i did register it with the hub before installing just to be sure it would work.

. Joanna, Peterborough

Works ok so far with homeseer, although it does show cover removed. But it does show garage door open or closed, and that's the most important aspect. Will mess with trying to fix the cover tamper alarm later.

Q. Meghan, Vermont says

Confirmed same or extremely similar hardware as the monoprice z-wave garage door sensor. The can that has the tilt ball (the sensor itself) is gold, the monoprice is silver as in the picture. Likely different firmware, it does have the z-wave plus logo, however couldn't determine if zp is being implemented without digging in deeper. Both this and the monoprice sensor seem to do the business as expected.

I. Juliana, Maine

All those new fancy garage door openers come with an automated notification system that tells you whether you were a moron and left your garage door open or not. 40 years ago, no big deal, right? well, today. You gotta keep those doors closed. I don't typically have a problem remember but i thought the idea was pretty cool. I'm always looking for ways to improve and automate my home. With home automation becoming more of the norm with smartthings and stack box (kickstarter project) i wanted to put my garage in auto mode. . I purchased the mimolite dry contact bridge along with this tilt sensor. I paired them both before installing. Just makes it easier to pair before installing in case of any issues. . This pairs easilyl with smartthings and stack box and was easy to set up to notify me when the garage is opened and closed. I can also tell with the app whether it is still opened or closed. And can close it easily without having to pay any monthly fees like some of the home automation systems charge.

R. Yvette, Kansas says

New to home automation, i purchased these as part of automating my garage doors utilizing zwave and mi casa verde's veralite system. They work great. In conjunction with linear fs20z dry contact switch, i was able to automate and control my garage doors within 30 minutes. The tilt sensors are great. They are pretty accurate. I tried testing on different areas of the garage door, but the top panel seems to be the most responsive. I am also using this to monitor the small door in the garage the accesses a crawl space above the garage. I would highly recommend these to anyone. And i already have to some of my neighbors!

X. Betty, New Hampshire

I've wanted to know the open/closed status of our garage door for a long time for security and piece of mind. I had attempted to install a standard door/window sensor aeon labs dsb04100-zwus - z-wave door & window sensor for this purpose. But there was no way to reliably do so with a huge garage door. This approach is much smarter by mounting one piece directly to the garage door and monitoring its tilt. . Installed easily with one caveat: the included screws are way too long- they went right through our garage door and peek out the other side. They're tiny but it's still a bit unsightly. So you might want to consider substituting some shorter ones or using the included two-sided tape instead. . Other than that, it's now working great with indigo for mac from perceptive automation and the range is stellar. In fact i have another aeon labs door sensor about 15 feet and a story closer to my z-stick and the door sensor required a aeon labs aeotec z-wave range extender/repeater while this ecolink garage sensor didn't. Very nice.

E. Gloria, Hartlepool says

Was looking for this instead of using door window sensors for the garage. I don't know why i could not find this before. I have issues with other tilt sensor having bad communication but this has so far not had any issues in communicating. I bought to test and was happy so bought a second. This wasn't easy to add to vera to start with but second attempt added as a motion sensor like it should, took about an hour for it to update after. Second one added right off no problem at all and took 5 minutes for it to update the device. . Very much recommend this!

Took two times to connect to my nexia bridge which is fine. With the sensor in my hand i tried to test it out by tilting it. Only showed closed until i turned it upside down. Knew that wasn't going to happen in real life. Could not get it to show status by just turning 90 degrees as door would do. I adjusted the switch a bit, it's the gold colored thing inside, and it worked perfectly. Put it on garage door and works great. Only complaint, and it's more annoying than anything, is that whenever the door opens or closes the tamper notice shows up as an event. I am not seeing the need for this and wish it could be disabled. But you really don't need to look at the events as the door shows open or closed on the app. The tables for different configurations make no sense to me, just too technical, and don't see anything to turn that off anyway.

K. Dorine, Iowa

I'm using the econlink z-wave wireless tilt sensor with a smartthings hub. After using it for about a month, i've found it to be a reliable sensor for garage door open-closed status. Using the smartthings app on an iphone or ipad with local wifi connection, annunciation is usually immediate or within a couple of seconds of status change. Similar performance is seen with a next-gen appliance module linked to the smartthings hub. With no wifi and only 4g enabled on the smartphone, delay of status change notification is highly variable: from immediate to hours. So, it's my impression that the sensor itself is flawless, but overall performance for status change annunciation is dependent on internet connectivity of the device used for annunciation.

. Kristen, Dudley says

This sensor is smaller than i expected, about 1. 5"x3". I am using this on the smartthings platform. This sensor can be used alone to detect if the door is open or closed, or can be paired with a z-wave relay (i used linear fs20z-1) to allow full control of your garage door (together costs about $60, instead of expensive manufacturer systems or new garage door opener). Using this with a relay is compatible with just about any garage door opener out there. It includes double sided tape for easy installation. I would recommend mounting on the top panel of your garage door so you can see if its open even a little bit. Quickly and easily paired on my network.

. Alma, Iowa

Works well, pretty easy to get running with my indigo system; like the hardware, installs well and is securely held in place. Decent documentation which i didn't read and would have sped up my installation if i did read it :) but i'm happy with this.

J. Guest, Wyoming says

These were my first smart things devices and they work great. I don't know how many times i've left the house with my mind fully occupied with where i'm going and can't remember if i closed the garage door after i get on the freeway. Now i can save the delay in coming back home to check. Don't try and follow the instructions that come with these, they essentially are wrong for smart things. Follow the smart things setup through your phone app, it actually works better than on the computer.

A. Mathis, Saskatchewan

This sensor has been working well so far on the garage door. We use samsung smartthings and it was relatively easy to pair. Once it was, it works just like any other sensor that you use with smartthings. I tried using a generic contact sensor for monitoring if the garage door was open, but i could not find a way to make one work. I could have put one on the floor, but i was worried about weather and running it over. So i would recommend this as a better solution for monitoring your garage door.

G. Tracey, Ile-de-France says

A few times, i've come home to find our garage door open - perhaps something blocked it from closing fully, or interference from some other radio source caused it to open. The ecolink sensor lets me detect the up/down status of the doors from anywhere, and in conjunction with my home automation system, i can send emails or other alerts should the door open unexpectedly or stay open longer than it should. . I use the vera 3 home automation controller - no issues with pairing or with controlling the door operation. Installation took only a few moments, with no wiring or other complicated tasks. After a few weeks of operation, it's been 100% accurate with no missed events or other problems. . Definitely a good addition to any home automation system.

Y. Nielsen, Camden

I got this item after some walked into garage, took the kids bike and left the garage door opened i guess all night long. It is installed on a veralite system and it has worked flawlessly ever since it was installed. I will surely recommend it if you want to monitor your garage door or appliance that will tilt. I get a message immediately on my cell informing if the door is open or closed. Set up was a breeze and because of the size , it barely noticeable on the door. Good stuff !

D. Ruby, North East Lincolnshire says

This sensor is very easy to install - just mount it on any vertical surface and it triggers when it is turned horizontal, such as a garage door. It can be used on a mailbox door. It is a good overall dry-contact sensor because it has a header inside and even a place to put in a magnetic reed switch, if desired. It can be used as a decent-looking door bell switch if you install a push-button switch on the cover.

U. Lara, Colorado

This sensor was a little tricky to link up with my almond+ but is working as advertized. I am not sure if its my hub or the product but the sensor shows the tamper alarm notification non stop. None of the other sensors on my system have this problem. This isn't a dealbreaker but if i found a replacement that didn't show tampered all the time i would likely swap it out.

Disadvantage and Critical reviews

T. Margaret, Quebec says

3 calls to tech support and 3 hours into trying to connect this to my vera plus. It pairs as 2 separate devices in the ui, neither of which work. Tech support finally advised that this device is not compatible with vera ui7. These are going back.

X. Anonymous, Louisiana

I was hoping it would let us know if the garage door was open or closed. It does not. It would show activity several times an hour. We finally removed it.

C. Eleanor, Torbay says

Expect to replace this within a year. It senses tilt with a little metal ball that rolls back and fourth when the sensor is tilted, but this piece eventually, but consistently, stops working. The only saving grace is there are contacts inside you can use to hook up external open/close sensors (like the magnets you see on doors, for example), so i was able to re-purpose my second failed unit.

K. Debra, Sutton

Although it does seem to link with my wink hub and wink relay. It is not compatible with the wink hub.

J. McCarthy, Poitou-Charentes says

This sensor worked great at the beginning. However within 6 months, it has begun failing. Specifically, it generally immediately reports when my garage opens. When the garage closes however, the sensors is not reporting this event for 4 or 5 hours. I do not know if this is the mechanical part of the switch or the associated electronics. In my case, this generates ongoing garage open alarms throughout the day or night. . I tried a quick puff to blow out any dust or cobwebs that might have accumulated. This did not help. I plan on trying more revival attempts and will post on results.

P. Brenda, Calderdale

Seems ok. Works fine with smartthings hub (v2) and works as a tilt sensor. It's using some kind of mechanical switch (some little piece of metal moves) so i doubt it will last a long time, though. Doesn't report temp but does report battery. Uses a large expensive lithium battery as well.

I. Elanor, Poole says

The tilt sensor does trigger when tilted. Unfortunately it sometimes also gives a "false alarm" trigger even when it is upright. (when gently jiggled by wind blowing on the garage door for example). . It is easy to install.

M. Kimberly, Bath and North East Somerset

My vera controller says the ecolink's battery is already drained to 55% after 6 months of use. If it was a regular aa or aaa battery, it would be acceptable. Not sure i want to buy these special batteries every 6 months.

L. Imelda, Ohio says

The unit gives false alarms. But it is fixable with some simple and cheap modifications. Just buy some cheap mercury on-off switches and install one parallel to the ballbearing based tilt sensor. The mods fits well inside the original housing and you will never have a false alarm again. . I have purchased 2 of these now. The first one started giving false alarms after around one year of usage. The problem is with the ballbearing on-off switch it used to detect tilt. At vertical position the ball falls on 2 contact points closing a circuit, and it should signal the unit that the garage door is closed. The connection goes bad after some time, so the unit will 'think' the door is open when it is not. I had 2 mid-night false alarms in which i had to clear every room in my house with a loaded gun. No need to say i don't enjoy it. . The unit passed the replacement policy. I thought i was just unlucky so i bought a new one. As to the first one, i purchased a $2 magnetic switch and re-purposed it as my fence gate open-close sensor. Btw, this unit has built in extension ports which makes this re-purpose very easy. It is not rated for outdoor, but mine worked outdoors fine with simple rain and sunlight shielding from a block of wood. . The second unit started giving off false alarm after just 2 months. I realized this might be a common issue. So i did some research online, made the mod, and never had a false alarm since. . Note to manufacture: please use the mercury switch. If you have environmental concerns, use higher quality ballbearing switches or put two cheap ones in parallel.

Z. Donna, Cheshire

All the smartthing devices i use in the garage have no trouble connecting to my hub. The echolink was on the ragged edge of connecting. Is it because smarttings use zigbee protocol and echolink uses z-wave? donno. I sent it back and got a smartthings multisensor which works like a champ.

N. Erickson, Stoke-on-Trent says

This worked almost perfectly with smartthings for a year with only 3 false positives. After a year, the false positives increased to maybe 8 times a day. The battery also still showed 100%, which is odd. I replaced the battery and the false positives continued. It may have something to do with the heat or humidity. I don't know.

B. Barbara, Utah

Working inconsistently after 6 months, then failed after another 2 or 3 months. Lasted under a year and died slowly, reporting things that didn't happen and missing reporting on things that did.

. Stacey, Hartlepool says

I use this in my home automation system and it will give me constant false positives of the garage door opening. This is especially bad because i have it set to turn on the garage and entryway lights for 5 minutes whenever the garage door opens.

Q. Annette, Gateshead

This a nice and works good, however it does not report if the door is open or closed. It only reports movement of the door.

G. Megan, St. Helens says

Ultimately, the device works well. . My device arrived with a dead battery. I did not realize this and spent an hour trying to get the device to pair with smartthings before giving up. I was going to return it to online store, but decided to try another battery. A trip to homedepot and back with a new battery and it worked fine. . I guess poor supplier if they are going to ship a device with a dead battery.

S. Julie, New Jersey

Some times transmit wrong signal, so my smartthings alerts me as my garage door is open even though it is closed.

V. Paige, Arkansas says

Would not stay registered on my veralite, even though i had a repeater less than 20' away. I was unable to get vera it to recognize it again, even when i brought it inside. Maybe defective - i sent it back.

H. Elizabeth, Bretagne

Does just exactly what i would like, but only lasted for 17 months. Not a durable product for me.

. Carrie, Hackney says

Sticky tape is no good. Sensor only works on extreme tilt. If door is open a foot doesn't read open even if placed at very top of door

R. Cathy, Barnet

Doesn't always work and acts more as a motion sensor than a tilt sensor. Also, does not tell if open or closed, just that there has been movement. I'm thinking if it is windy it might set it off. Might send it back, disappointed.

Y. Ross, North Carolina says

I bought this instead of the smartthings door sensor to save a few dollars. Almost immediately i started getting false alarms. That lasted for a few days. It seems to settled in and it has been working fine for several months but it will be hard for me to have confidence in it. Amazingly the battery is still indicating 100%.

U. Lewis, Utah

I returned this sensor as it would occasionally not register the garage opening.

F. Reed, Alaska says

This sensor is terrible. I am 0-2 with getting readings that my garage door is open only to find out it's really closed. Not good when the house is 100 miles away.

E. Carmen, Rheinland-Pfalz

I set up a scene to turn on the main large garage light when the garage opens and turn it off five minutes after the garage closes. Worked great until i set up a notification sound on my phone to tell me when it opens or closes. This is when i realized that it is turning my garage light on and off all day and night. The smallest disturbance will trigger it, a small gust of wind or someone opening a door to the house. Looking for a good replacement

D. Valdez, Arkansas says

About once a week it fails to show 'closed'. If you tap it, it works. This is some sort of physical issue with the switch inside.

O. Florence, Camden

Like other reviews, the sensitivity is lacking allowing the doors to be opened enough for entry without triggering. Would do contacts next time.

W. Nicole, Oxfordshire says

This item doesn't work with the qolsys (quality of life system) the system cannot find the device even if you follow the directions to add the device.
